Based on the pitching matchups, I like our chances for a sweep. UCLA has lost 5 of their last 6 conference games and are not playing well. They have also been decimated by injuries this year.

I was just looking over the ESPN PAC 12 blog and they broke down the % production of each class for Offense and Defense. Oregon State stood out in that the majority of our production last year in almost every category was from the Juniors. That seems like it should bode well for us this year. Of course losing Cooks and Crichton early makes a lot of these moot points.

He did himself a disservice not coming back for senior year. Playing with some legit D tackles he could have easily surpassed his 2012 campaign and put the 2013 slump in the rear view mirror. And the team would have benefited immensely.
Cooks did the right thing leaving early, and more power to him. Crighton- not so much. And the team loses big time. Lose-lose.
Skoki didn’t lose anything. He’s going to get paid, and he’s going to be able to take care of his family. He would have come back if circumstances were different. But they aren’t, and he didn’t.

Darron Thomas thinks so.
3rd round isn’t bad per se, but it’s bad compared to 1st round in 2015. I can’t fault him for doing the best thing for him, but I don’t think this was it. I think he – and the football program – both lose. The major knock on him was a 2013 production slump, and he could easily have turned that around.

I’m betting he sticks once he gets in the league, and probably gets a decent second contract like that former beaver CB at New Orleans (Lewis?).
He has about the same rating Lewis did, but he’s 3″ shorter. Lewis was also rated as a 3-4 round guy and went in the 3rd. I think Reynolds is stickier and more physical on coverage than Lewis was. Someone is going to get a nice UFA in him.

If the kid walks into the coach’s office after his first indiscretion, hat in hand, open and honest about all… then he shows he’s responsible and just made a mistake. That’s something he can learn from, and the coach knows he can trust the kid. But helping to tear the team apart then refusing to be adult about it afterward deserves leniency?
That sentiment can go take a flying leap off a tall building.

I’m sorry, but Howland is old school. It’s not like Ralph was warm and fuzzy. OSU knows old school and hasn’t gone there since Ralph. I’m not saying Howland is the best choice if Hollins is truly interested. But he is otherwise. And don’t think Hollins wouldn’t run the program the same way. He knows this is a business, and his workforce doesn’t need to come over for movie night every Saturday for this thing to work. A true player’s coach identifies leaders and tells the leaders to lead. And he supplies followers with the same mindset. That’s a really hard thing to do in a place like UCLA.
The quip about recruiting in SoCal is bullshit too. Wooden would have won no championships without the stars he got from places like Philly, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Florida… and, oh yeah… NYC. Yes, you built your reserves from your own region back then. But the blue-bloods don’t do that now. When you’re a blue-blood, you recruit the best players… period.

Not all that surprising…remember, teams basically double their rosters this time of year. Up to about 100. If he’s still on the team after final roster cuts, color me impressed.
Basically, with 32 teams bringing on about 50 people apiece, most athletes with D1 connections can make that cut- provided they are willing to pour everything they have into an extreme longshot. Probably have to spend a lot of $$ on focused trainers as well.
That said, I think Reynolds makes it. Possibly Philip too- depends on how smoothly that transition to guard goes. I’d be surprised about anyone else.
Andrews should make it as an interior lineman. He was still rehabbing his leg last year. He has the tools to be a four or five year contributor to the league. Philipp can be all world if he plays the right position. We’ll see on him.
Reynolds is a lock for a long career. He is everything NFL coaches look for in a DB except height and pushing a pile.

Well the price for stupidity should be a suspension for the rest of the regular season. Even if found not guilty, he needs to sit out.
I think they need to do their due diligence on this see if the charges stick or not. Then decide if he should be suspended. But he does get suspended then so be it, it’s the price you pay.

I tend to agree here. It depends on what extent the process goes to prosecute him as well. If he apologizes to the homeowner and pays for damages, and the homeowner accepts this and the DA’s recommendation that the charges be lessened, then he should still be suspended for just being stupid.
Does that mean one or two series? I think the first series should give enough time to figure that out. So I wouldn’t expect him to participate for the next week. After that depends on the condition of his situation.

Then I come back in a while later in time to see Petey lay down a nice bunt single… and then see Conforto bomb the road. Then I come back and see Conforto and Davis hit back to back dingers.
That’s the extent of my seeing anything of yesterday’s game.

It is now quite apparent that George Dohrmann sources are black market AAU types. Georgie can only see the world thru biased sources with axes to grind and illusions to be fabricated. Too bad O LIve journalists always trust other journalists to spread the gospel and not be on the take. I have no idea who would be the best hire. But he opinion of SI should carry no weight.
Dohrmann was absolutely flayed for the oSu “acandal.” And it wasn’t really hard to do. All his detractors had to do was to simply ask the other side what their story was. And almost all of them, to a person, said that this was the first time anyone was contacting them about anything. And they were quite happy to be open and honest and provide documents and the like.
All of it made his sources look like whiny losers who thought they had darts to throw at the meanies who were responsible for them being losers.

You do realize that badly underthrown passes against the Beavs meant pass interference almost all the time up until a couple years ago. You should be amazed that this kid doesn’t watch the WR slow down then just run him over before the ball gets there… which is how it’s supposed to be done… in someone’s brilliant football mind… whom I should never question from here in grandma’s basement… me… having never played football beyond the third grade.

We’ll see how he does preseason, but he could be a solid #4 receiver with a ridiculous amount of upside.
I’ll definitely try to get him around 8/9th rounds. It might take the first 1/3 of the season to get him going (think what’s his name in the slot who played in for the patriots this year…that guy was averaging 8-9 catches a game by the close of the season.)
Really excited to see what Cooks can do with Brees and that offense.
WR4 is about what I was thinking. High risk, high reward (some huge games, some blanks). The number of mouths to feed in that offense will be the biggest issue. Leaning towards trying to make sure I get him in all leagues but wanted to know what others are thinking.
I’m assuming all the -1s are from people who are mad that I’m “down” on Cooks…?
It’s just really tough for *any* rookie receiver to be fantasy relevant (read consistent). I think Cooks has the talent and definitely the drive, but not necessarily the opportunity. The Saints really spread the ball around, and you know Jimmy Graham will always get the lions share of receptions, receiving yds, and TDs. For the record, the conventional wisdom would hold that Cooks is not worth a roster spot at all.
I have no doubt that he’ll make an impact for the actual team in 2014…I’m just trying to determine value for a fantasy team.

Truthfully, I wasn’t watching Wheaton’s numbers all that closely last year, so I wouldn’t have the full picture to compare the two.
There is no doubt that Graham will take a large amount of the targets in that offense, which will disrupt any kind of consistency, as you mentioned before.
The Value on cooks (from a strictly FFB perspective) is tough to say, I think with a pass happy offense he will definitely get some looks. I am guessing a decent flex option and match up week to week against Defenses who cover the slot poorly. Either way, he will be fun pick up for any Beaver fan in any league.

Oh dear… I never thought there would ever be a sequel to JJ. He was the kind of movie where the screenwriters and producers all get shot in order to prevent such a thing.
Stoudamire can recruit if nothing else. He would be able to get players to go to Alaska-Fairbanks. It’s what he would do with them once he’s in charge that’s in question. Miller, Pastner, Hollins and Braun all say he’s destined to be a really good head coach.
Maybe he brings Braun with him as an assistant?
Stoudemire is OK as a fallback but BDC messed up by not securing Howland. We could have had Stoudemire in 5 years after Howland built it up and Damon was more ready to keep it going.

If Stoudamire can’t coach, he needs to manage a staff that has complimentary/better coaching skills than he possesses, and he likely lacks the management experience as well.
Not to say its impossible for him to be successful, but after 24 years of mostly irrelevant basketball, it’d be nice to feel better about a coaching investment that’s likely to last 4-6 years.

BDC is what makes it a “hell hole”. It’s rumored that once Ed Ray makes a hire, he does absolutely no followup. Seems to be a case of, “well, that’s done – I can forget about it.” Thus, OSU has an athletic director who is generally disliked and consistently screws up.
If he was not willing to take a risk, then he definitely was not the right guy. The recent experiences at OS and Marquette seem to indicate that he thinks of himself more as a prince than a man. He got his name in the news. That is all he really wanted. This is actually good news for The Beavers.
I got to think it was a money issue. He gives up 1.2 mil to UCLA if he takes a job so he really needed close to 2 mil a year to make it worthwhile.
We might as well hire Jay John again – right now we are looking at tying that 0-18 mark next year.
I like Musselman. He is known as a player development guy and believes in tailoring his offense to match the personnel he has. Basically everything CR was not.
Let’s say that you are 55+ years old and have a few million in the bank. Does money really matter? Sure it does. But at 55+, if money matters more than the opportunity to pursue a “passion” in a closing window of time, then you are merely a mercenary. Nothing wrong with that. It just does not match the job description for a leader of young men. Sort of off topic, but everyone laughed when Manuel Pelligrini (El Ingeniero) got fired from the whale (Real Madrid) and then took the job at the Minnow (Malaga) where he took a huge salary cut. Malaga went broke but he stayed till the bitter end, loyal as heck. He is now the head coach at Man City, one of the most respected coaches in any sport, and makes a boatload as well. He continued to pursue his passion whether he got paid or not, and now has his reward. I am certain that there is a great coach here that is available, that is not so short sighted and mercenary as to be worried about the number of zeros at the end of the paycheck. Find him.

Davis was robbed of win. He pitched 5 innings of one hit ball and Reser gives up the two runs to tie it up (charged to Shelton) and the Beavs sore 4 in the bottom half to give him the win.

Davis had probably his best outing this year, would have been nice to see him credited with the win. 66 pitches. 5 K’s and 2 BB; better control than recent outings.
However, he could be needed this weekend or, almost certainly, in the post season; a good time to get his first win. Question is, will this outing turn out to be his new benchmark or merely an aberration?
