  1. Based on the pitching matchups, I like our chances for a sweep. UCLA has lost 5 of their last 6 conference games and are not playing well. They have also been decimated by injuries this year.
    I’ll be at the Tuesday game against the Pilots in Keizer. Go Beavs!!!

  2. I was just looking over the ESPN PAC 12 blog and they broke down the % production of each class for Offense and Defense. Oregon State stood out in that the majority of our production last year in almost every category was from the Juniors. That seems like it should bode well for us this year. Of course losing Cooks and Crichton early makes a lot of these moot points.

    • Yeah- players going early to the NFL makes that analysis pretty useless. Would be way more interesting if they’d combined underclassmen NFL draftees with seniors.

        • Don’t know if it is true, or if it matters to you, but I heard on the JoeBeav radio program today that the game is on the National PAC12 but not on the Oregon PAC12 due to a track meet. FWIW.

          EDIT: Confirmed by Baseball twitter, live game is on PAC12 National and will be tape delayed at 9:30 on PAC12 Oregon.

      • Not that great for him…mid 3rd round? You don’t leave school early for that.

        He did himself a disservice not coming back for senior year. Playing with some legit D tackles he could have easily surpassed his 2012 campaign and put the 2013 slump in the rear view mirror. And the team would have benefited immensely.

        Cooks did the right thing leaving early, and more power to him. Crighton- not so much. And the team loses big time. Lose-lose.

        • Skoki didn’t lose anything. He’s going to get paid, and he’s going to be able to take care of his family. He would have come back if circumstances were different. But they aren’t, and he didn’t.

          On a side note… I just tuned into the game.

          Dylan Davis is a lot prettier on the Pac Network than he is in person.

          • 3rd round isn’t bad per se, but it’s bad compared to 1st round in 2015. I can’t fault him for doing the best thing for him, but I don’t think this was it. I think he – and the football program – both lose. The major knock on him was a 2013 production slump, and he could easily have turned that around.

            Darren Thomas had no choice….Mariota was coming on like a freight train and he knew it.

            Thomas was a better system QB in a system which requires a system QB. His numbers and his will to win say so. Mariota has better measurables which might get him a look in the NFL. But he’s about as much an NFL QB as Thomas is now.

    • Andy Peterson is the glue, the unsung (for the most part) hero of the team. It seems as though he always gets the clutch hit or makes a great play in the field.

  5. Ben at 82 pitches going to b5 down 2-0. You know Ben will want to keep going even if it takes over 130, 140 or so, hope he can be kept below 125.

      • Casey has repeatedly said that Morrison just has to believe in himself, Parker reports a scout told Pat Bailey that Morrison is the best defensive ss in the league.

        • He was hyped for his D. That he’s still in single digits for E’s as of this late date is just amazing for any college SS, let alone a frosh.

    • He dizzied Conforto with that curve, then Davis just slapped him. The turning point was when Howard (who isn’t good enough to play for ASU btw) dug out a real good change-up for a solid hit. He lost it after that.

    We traded associate AD’s with Stony Brook a couple days ago. They got Heilbron as their new AD, and we got Todd Phelps as our new Shawn Heilbron.

      • Not really. Shawn wanted to be an AD. He will be one at a large program soon. He’s just working his way up through the ranks.

        I guess you could say he’s poised now to apply for a major program… say… two or three years down the road.

    • I’m betting he sticks once he gets in the league, and probably gets a decent second contract like that former beaver CB at New Orleans (Lewis?).

      • He has about the same rating Lewis did, but he’s 3″ shorter. Lewis was also rated as a 3-4 round guy and went in the 3rd. I think Reynolds is stickier and more physical on coverage than Lewis was. Someone is going to get a nice UFA in him.

    • I’m shaking my head at the part about Austin….paraphrasing, but Altman did not think he did anything serious to get himself suspended for a year? WTF? As a head coach of a major (and on the rise) college hoops program, I probably want to have a very good idea what a transfer did to get suspended before I accept him, right? In what world does Dohrmann live that he gives the kid a free pass for not only condoning, but contributing to the delinquency he himself (with a ton of embellishments and incorrect assumptions to fill in some vast blanks) said was such a terrible thing? If the kid walks into the coach’s office after his first indiscretion, hat in hand, open and honest about all… then he shows he’s responsible and just made a mistake. That’s something he can learn from, and the coach knows he can trust the kid. But helping to tear the team apart then refusing to be adult about it afterward deserves leniency?

    That sentiment can go take a flying leap off a tall building.

    • I don’t think he has much influence (at least I hope not), but am I the only one thinking that our young resident journalist Connor LeTourneau does not want Ben Howland to get the job? Puff piece about Grace, musings about Stoudamire and now this. Is Howland a grump with the press? Connor concerned about access?

      • The hype is bad. But it’s based on a half-assed hatchet job. So Connor playing off this makes him lesser than TMZ at this point.

        Oooh! Prima Donnas were partying in LA! Oooh! The coach couldn’t handle them! BFD! Alford won’t be able to either. Or he’ll get his players in and play his “four minutes at a time” style and just lose in the Sweet 16 every year.

        I’m sorry, but Howland is old school. It’s not like Ralph was warm and fuzzy. OSU knows old school and hasn’t gone there since Ralph. I’m not saying Howland is the best choice if Hollins is truly interested. But he is otherwise. And don’t think Hollins wouldn’t run the program the same way. He knows this is a business, and his workforce doesn’t need to come over for movie night every Saturday for this thing to work. A true player’s coach identifies leaders and tells the leaders to lead. And he supplies followers with the same mindset. That’s a really hard thing to do in a place like UCLA.

        The quip about recruiting in SoCal is bullshit too. Wooden would have won no championships without the stars he got from places like Philly, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Florida… and, oh yeah… NYC. Yes, you built your reserves from your own region back then. But the blue-bloods don’t do that now. When you’re a blue-blood, you recruit the best players… period.

    • fwiw… I think Philipp will be a pro for a long time. He’s a G, and nobody on that level will be afraid to tell him so. He will be a good to great road-grader once he’s put in the right position… on any level.

      • Not all that surprising…remember, teams basically double their rosters this time of year. Up to about 100. If he’s still on the team after final roster cuts, color me impressed.

        Basically, with 32 teams bringing on about 50 people apiece, most athletes with D1 connections can make that cut- provided they are willing to pour everything they have into an extreme longshot. Probably have to spend a lot of $$ on focused trainers as well.

        That said, I think Reynolds makes it. Possibly Philip too- depends on how smoothly that transition to guard goes. I’d be surprised about anyone else.

        • Andrews should make it as an interior lineman. He was still rehabbing his leg last year. He has the tools to be a four or five year contributor to the league. Philipp can be all world if he plays the right position. We’ll see on him.

          Reynolds is a lock for a long career. He is everything NFL coaches look for in a DB except height and pushing a pile.

    I am more than impressed with what I’m seeing from this kid. We have him for two more years to boot.

    • I think they need to do their due diligence on this see if the charges stick or not. Then decide if he should be suspended. But he does get suspended then so be it, it’s the price you pay.

        • I tend to agree here. It depends on what extent the process goes to prosecute him as well. If he apologizes to the homeowner and pays for damages, and the homeowner accepts this and the DA’s recommendation that the charges be lessened, then he should still be suspended for just being stupid.

          Does that mean one or two series? I think the first series should give enough time to figure that out. So I wouldn’t expect him to participate for the next week. After that depends on the condition of his situation.

    Conforto ought to offer me an autographed ball to not watch next weekend’s games. The ABs I watched this weekend he was 0-9. When I turned off the game he went 2-2 with 2 dingers and 5 RBI.

    • I was in and out all day and only had time to stop for a couple at bats here and there. I turned on the TV in time to watch Hendrix hit it out. Then I come back in a while later in time to see Petey lay down a nice bunt single… and then see Conforto bomb the road. Then I come back and see Conforto and Davis hit back to back dingers.

      That’s the extent of my seeing anything of yesterday’s game.

    • Dohrmann was absolutely flayed for the oSu “acandal.” And it wasn’t really hard to do. All his detractors had to do was to simply ask the other side what their story was. And almost all of them, to a person, said that this was the first time anyone was contacting them about anything. And they were quite happy to be open and honest and provide documents and the like.

      All of it made his sources look like whiny losers who thought they had darts to throw at the meanies who were responsible for them being losers.

    “Rashaad Reynolds, CB, Oregon State: Reynolds’ 5-9 frame will be a liability when covering bigger receivers, and he has been downgraded for a lack of downfield speed, but there are few defensive backs in this class who are able and willing to to as many different things as he has been. He can cover in the slot and outside, provides a pop in run support and is familiar with different coverage schemes. He could find some starting or nickel time in Jacksonville’s secondary, and that’s where he’ll start his NFL career.”

    I recall mid-season last year he was identified on S-I as one of the most draftable Beaver upper classmen due to his coverage skills and “blazing speed”…..

  39. For those of you ABs who play fantasy football:

    Anyone think Cooks will be a fantasy starter by 2014 season’s end?

    If not, will he be objectively rosterable? Where does he end up on your team? WR3, WR4?

      • I was just thinking about this as well.

        We’ll see how he does preseason, but he could be a solid #4 receiver with a ridiculous amount of upside.

        I’ll definitely try to get him around 8/9th rounds. It might take the first 1/3 of the season to get him going (think what’s his name in the slot who played in for the patriots this year…that guy was averaging 8-9 catches a game by the close of the season.)

        Really excited to see what Cooks can do with Brees and that offense.

        • WR4 is about what I was thinking. High risk, high reward (some huge games, some blanks). The number of mouths to feed in that offense will be the biggest issue. Leaning towards trying to make sure I get him in all leagues but wanted to know what others are thinking.

          I’m assuming all the -1s are from people who are mad that I’m “down” on Cooks…?

          It’s just really tough for *any* rookie receiver to be fantasy relevant (read consistent). I think Cooks has the talent and definitely the drive, but not necessarily the opportunity. The Saints really spread the ball around, and you know Jimmy Graham will always get the lions share of receptions, receiving yds, and TDs. For the record, the conventional wisdom would hold that Cooks is not worth a roster spot at all.

          I have no doubt that he’ll make an impact for the actual team in 2014…I’m just trying to determine value for a fantasy team.

          Who do you draft first and/or trust more (for 2014):

          Cooks…or Wheaton?

          • Truthfully, I wasn’t watching Wheaton’s numbers all that closely last year, so I wouldn’t have the full picture to compare the two.

            There is no doubt that Graham will take a large amount of the targets in that offense, which will disrupt any kind of consistency, as you mentioned before.

            The Value on cooks (from a strictly FFB perspective) is tough to say, I think with a pass happy offense he will definitely get some looks. I am guessing a decent flex option and match up week to week against Defenses who cover the slot poorly. Either way, he will be fun pick up for any Beaver fan in any league.

  43. Stoudemire is OK as a fallback but BDC messed up by not securing Howland. We could have had Stoudemire in 5 years after Howland built it up and Damon was more ready to keep it going.

    • “hopefully he can coach too.” This should not be a question. All candidates should have the demonstrated ability to coach.

      If Stoudamire can’t coach, he needs to manage a staff that has complimentary/better coaching skills than he possesses, and he likely lacks the management experience as well.

      Not to say its impossible for him to be successful, but after 24 years of mostly irrelevant basketball, it’d be nice to feel better about a coaching investment that’s likely to last 4-6 years.

      • At this point, they should just spend a couple of grand on a “House of Wax” Ralph Miller figure and stand him on the sidelines during games. Save a few hundred thousand and the results won’t be dramatically different anyway.

    • BDC is what makes it a “hell hole”. It’s rumored that once Ed Ray makes a hire, he does absolutely no followup. Seems to be a case of, “well, that’s done – I can forget about it.” Thus, OSU has an athletic director who is generally disliked and consistently screws up.

The recent experiences at OS and Marquette seem to indicate that he thinks of himself more as a prince than a man. He got his name in the news. That is all he really wanted. This is actually good news for The Beavers.

  50. Let’s say that you are 55+ years old and have a few million in the bank. Does money really matter? Sure it does. But at 55+, if money matters more than the opportunity to pursue a “passion” in a closing window of time, then you are merely a mercenary. Nothing wrong with that. It just does not match the job description for a leader of young men. Sort of off topic, but everyone laughed when Manuel Pelligrini (El Ingeniero) got fired from the whale (Real Madrid) and then took the job at the Minnow (Malaga) where he took a huge salary cut. Malaga went broke but he stayed till the bitter end, loyal as heck. He is now the head coach at Man City, one of the most respected coaches in any sport, and makes a boatload as well. He continued to pursue his passion whether he got paid or not, and now has his reward. I am certain that there is a great coach here that is available, that is not so short sighted and mercenary as to be worried about the number of zeros at the end of the paycheck. Find him.

A long run and against the wall. A one out bloop single and Reser on for Sheton. Ball hit over Hendrix head as he was playing shallow as the hitter was hitting 0.97 and didn’t have an extra-basehit as a Pilot. Sac fly and Reser doesn’t hold either runner. Reser bailed out by a diving catch by Conforto. Stretch and it’s 2-2.

  54. Davis was robbed of win. He pitched 5 innings of one hit ball and Reser gives up the two runs to tie it up (charged to Shelton) and the Beavs sore 4 in the bottom half to give him the win.

    • Yup.
      Davis had probably his best outing this year, would have been nice to see him credited with the win. 66 pitches. 5 K’s and 2 BB; better control than recent outings.

      However, he could be needed this weekend or, almost certainly, in the post season; a good time to get his first win. Question is, will this outing turn out to be his new benchmark or merely an aberration?

  55. awesome night–had meetings in Salem all day–thought it was an afternoon game. Got back to my hotel room at 7. –15 minutes later strolling into the stadium…

    Grabbed a beer and snagged a 2nd row behind beavs dugout to see 8 runs scored in the last 2+ innings. Very cool since I haven’t seen a Beavs BB game since 1982!

    • It’s not like he hasn’t known this forever. I’d love to have him here too. I’d just like him to get off his ass and finally finish something he started… if he thinks it’s really that important.

      Note: The pathetic nature of the Olive article could very well have been because the author intended it to be really pathetic. I doubt Lester is the pouty “why me” self-inhibiting “victim” the author attempts to portray here. I think he just answered a couple questions. It is good to see he is finally going back to school. I wish him luck in that endeavor.

    He would be another really good candidate from the assistant coaching ranks. Forget anyone else on the recruiting trail. Hutson puts them all to shame. And his coaching strength is D. Since nobody else is mentioning him, I’m wondering if there’s a current candidate (who might take less money for himself but will be able to afford A LOT for his assistants) is putting out feelers for potential assistants. I could really get behind someone smart enough to bring Hutson to Corvallis as a part of his staff.

  59. Forget the college degree excuse. The most important criteria for a new mens bball coach at OSU is the acceptability of any brother-in-laws and sisters.

    What have they been doing the the last ten or twenty years? Where do they stand politically? Until Lester comes clean with family history, background, political involvement and pertinent FICO for his scores for his relatives he can’t be considered. JB

      Let’s run a basic troll. If I said Duck fans were some pejorative, that would be a general bait. It’s pretty vast and weak as bait goes. But someone somewhere might respond to it. It’s just out there.

      Let’s say we get more specific then. A better bait would be to say any Duck fan who… I don’t know… let’s say… names their children after flowers or plants is just some other pejorative. I know. It’s a silly subset. Of course, neither of us know anyone who fits this criteria. Right Linusboner?

      Because we’ve specified a smaller subset, we’re now trolling with some specific bait. We know our target, and we’re luring him out without the whole forum or message board knowing this.

      What you don’t seem to get is that trolling is a art. It’s not just calling out someone. Calling out someone is just calling out someone. You become the spectacle instead of the other way around.

      Now, I know you like to live vicariously through us for whatever reason. I guess Duck forums really are just circle jerks of boredom if old men like you must spread your singular wit over all your posts on this site.
