Beavs @ Hawaii (Game Thread)

322

Thread is going up a bit early because I’ll be on the road all day (heading to San Diego for the weekend, and trying to get down there in time to settle in and watch the game).

Nothing has changed over the past few days, and I am still taking Hawaii in the upset. I am surprised how many people like the Beavers in this game (and in a blowout no less) , and I hope you guys are right.

Go Beavs!

  1. 31-17 Beavs, lots of FG’s for the Beavs late in the game. Hawaii scores first, then the Beavs take it to them. TD for the Beavs on the 2nd or 3rd play play of the first drive!

  2. How long are we keeping that AL sign outside Reser? I don’t think we get paid enough by the Reser Foundation to put their logos on our field much longer or that AL sign. He never played a down for OSU and by this point we were bound to have a half finished stadium anyway. Just seems like that sign is too much credit with years of his life but won’t make sense a few years from now. I would take it down with the VFC remodel.

If Reser’s family wants to help make sure we have a sizeable contribution to eventually finish Reser Phase 3 right with a mirrored double deck so we aren’t stuck with a half-baked vision for the next 25 years it might be different.

Out of the 80 million needed to complete a mirror by 2020 or so, it would be nice if they would make atleast a 10 million donation if we are going to continue to lionize their image over our field and stadium. Short of that we are underselling OSU.

  3. I could see Brandin Cooks making a 3 million donation to OSU in 7 or 8 years. As long as he stays healthy Brandin will have a very lucrative career. It will be great if he does something to give back to the university and promote Beaver Football.

  4. Everyone here is picking Beavs to win which is what I’m hoping for… but the line is Beavs lose by 11. Whatever. Early in the season like this it is hard to tell who will show up on game day from either team… Dr Jackal or Mr. Hyde. You would think being a Pac-12 team that I as a Pac-12 team fan should be sitting here confident that this is a warm-up game for the season to come. Not the case. The words “scared for tonight” seem more accurate.

  5. Eastern Washington-Washington is a complete track meet, much like the Oregon State game was last year. 31-28 UW ahead with over seven minutes left in the 2nd quarter

      • Cal looks to have made huge strides from last year. After they beat Sac St they’ll have more wins already than they had all of last year.

Northwestern was a quality win to open their season, and now they are dominating weak competition.

    • Vernon Adams is a really good college QB…no way around it. Probably no NFL potential, but he could easily be a great starter at the D1 level. Maybe similar to Kellen Moore in that respect.

      • The only games I’ve watched him play have been last year against us and now against UW. His pocket maneuverability and awareness are solid, and his touch on those mid-range passes is damn impressive. Pretty tough guy too, considering he’s standing in there getting hit by those UW defenders quite a bit.

  6. I never comment on your site but I read it all the time and enjoy most of the banter; heck the info on this site seems to be better then the media. So thanks.

  7. So, after watching 7 quarters of the Huskies play, I have to ask: what has been all the hype about UW this year, with Top-25 talk and whatnot? Surely the masses didn’t believe Petersen was so superior to Sarkisian to make up for the loss of so many skill-position players.

      • I don’t understand how a guy could be ineligible to transfer into osu but be eligible to transfer elsewhere. Are the ncaa eligibility requirements different from school to school?

  8. SC wins on a 53 yd FG then stopped tree on a Hogan sack/ fumble. Tree had plenty of chances and the mysterious chop block call doomed them (took away a TD and not a chop block IMO).

  9. Very impressed with Justin Wilcox today in huge win for USC that sets them up as Pac-12 South favorites and on position for a Playoff run. In contrast the Huskies without him gave up about 500 yards & 7 Vernon Adams TDs. In a better world where Riley was willing to pass the torch at an opportune moment, I would say OSU should pursue him hard in a couple years. That would be 16 long years for Riley and handing off in time for some real momentum to build before we eventually get serious about Reser expansion. The right hire could change the equation like Tinkle appears to be doing and breathe the kind of life into the program that allows it to reach new heights.

    • Riley wouldn’t hand off to Wilcox…it’d be someone on staff. God, he’d probably say Banker deserves the chance to be HC….BDC would have to get an outsider, doubt he’d go for Wilcox due to UO history/connection, but who knows.

    • Can get away from pursuit… but sense of who is open?

Pick plays and blown coverages would give me a sense of who is open really quickly also. And I had an arm about as potent as Mariota’s when I was his age… not huge. He has some neat wheels. But don’t give the system the short shrift. In this case, don’t pretend the read option doesn’t exist.

  10. Pat Haden is a complete schmuck running down tonthw field to argue the referees call on a head shot that the replay showed was corrected. And he is on the selection committee. Unbelievable

    • To be fair he was down getting an explanation from Sark on the unsportsmanlike penalty on himself. He actually texted Pat to come down.

    • The fact that Riley doesn’t value QB mobility is absurd; even out of a pro-set.

      “It’s not what we do.”

I could see a “Hot Tub Time Machine” poster with BDC, Banker, and Riley soaking in the tub (bad picture I know)t…”They were going back to hair. To a college football game without spread offenses. Back to low fan expectations….”

  11. Lovely. Oregon likely to get several 1st place votes and Mariota the Heisman favorite going forward if this result holds. Gotta give them props though, they showed up today.

  12. A pick that gives them field position on the 10, and then a 3rd down PI call to give them fresh downs. That’s what it took for Hawaii to score.

Also, Norm Chow is 4-20 as their coach. I still feel pretty good lol.

  13. The fans didn’t want T.O.’s left on the table, guess we should have been more specific. Luckily no one was injured after that last T.O.

  14. First half thoughts,

It’s what I thought, make Hawaii beat the defense through the air.

    1. Bolden needs to gain 20 pounds tomorrow. He’s not going to make it unless he learns to avoid big hits.
    2. Defense keeps tackling high leading to extra yards.
    3. Steven Nelson is playing like a pro.
    4. TEs look good blocking and catching
    5. Ward looks like he wants the starting job back.
    6. Refs are just incompetent. I don’t blame Chow for being so hot. But even if all the calls went Hawaii’s way, it wouldn’t change the outcome of the game.
    7. Dockery has some nice wheels.

If I were the play caller, I’d give a heavy dose of Ward and Woods right out the gate. But I expect Riley to try to pad Mannion’s stats. Definitely will see backups today sometime in the 4th quarter.

  15. Got home a little late but had the DVR recording. Started watching from beginning fast forwarding commercials to get caught up and bam… my DVR locked up and I missed everything from 21 to 7 on. After beating the DVR the channel is back on at least. (*&^%$^&^%%

  16. One thing that Bolden needs to do is become a better route runner and get much stronger. Routes gets sloppy at times and gets knocked off his routes far too easily

  17. Too bad we can’t count on running for a first on 3-1 against lowly Hawaii. Geez . We can be happy early this season, but don’t be shocked when the real teams destroy us. The little stuff is piling up.

  18. The Commish with Another. Warrior. First. Down.

Why does he spend so much time looking to the sideline when he lines up 8 yards up the ball most times?

  19. So Riley leaves Mannion in, but knowing he doesn’t want injuries, cuts his play book way down. Should’ve brought in Vanderveen and used the whole play book. Riley reads like a book. And Read is an overpaid douche

  20. I REALLY think now is a good time to name Garret the play caller. A bye, two weeks for the transition…SDSU is challenging, not to be overlooked, but clearly winnable at home.

Riley’s ego (which is why I think he’s so stubborn about his play calling, leaving Mannion in) is just getting ridiculous.

  21. Ok Dockery, no more returns for you.

I hate when defensive players are returners anyway. They don’t work on carrying the same way offensive players do, and now you see the result. What’s wrong with Bolden/Harmon/Brown returning?

    • I don’t like to throw some potentially good football players and some good kids under the bus, but the only hope this year is to have a really losing season and hope it causes Riley to retire.I didn’t watch or listen to the game but checked some videos this morning. He’s getting worse than CR – dumpingl on the “scared” players. He has the cushiest football coaching job in the country.

  22. Even if the Beavs win this, this is just a whole lotta’ poor play calling and play…they so rarely put a complete game together – all 3 units – for four quarters…all a reflection of coaching.

  23. All of this will affirm in Riley’s mind just why he’s right to leave Mannion in so long…should have went to VanderVeen and committed to running the ball down their throats when up by 31.

  24. I seriously believe if Vanderveen and all the 2s came in to start the fourth with the goal to outscore the first half, that we would not be seeing this close game beating up on our 1s.

  25. illegal substitution, which leads to a reply of 4th down, which adds to our own secondary tackling one another, to a personal foul, and now they are going to score on us….what the fuck…

    FINISH A GAME….

  26. So against PSU their first half was poor, in this game, the second…

2 games into the season and already Riley’s ego and ineptness are galling…

  27. Riley to field reporter: “Wish we’d thrown more in the fourth quarter because they had so many guys up there, we beat our heads against the wall trying to run it there…”

  28. Riley said “We kinda went into a shell, they made some plays, then we got scared.” That’s not what you want to hear.

He also said “I wish we’d have thrown the ball a bit more in the 4th, they were loading the box.” Riley always wants to throw more.

That game was way closer than it ever needed to be. I don’t see how we get to even 7 wins this year, the Pac12 is going to chew us up. Our OLine is terrible, and that alone is going to cost us multiple games.

  29. I have read these posts for probably 2 years now and have never felt the need to post… Until now. Post game with mannion: “I’m really proud of all our guys for getting a tough win against a really physical good team…” Good team? The 1-11 last year, 0-2 good team? The team you nearly gave up a 31 point lead to? Smh…

      • I just finished watching the game on DVR. Mannion was not that sharp, I saw two or three picks Hawaii should have had, especially a pass to Hamlett in the flat that the defender should have had for a pick six,. San Diego St. may be the game where the Beavs pay if they don’t play a complete game. Aztecs gave top 25 North Carolina all they could handle. Rocky Long is a good coach.

      • I’m lazy.

I just buy glass jugs of cider and add some sugar and yeast. Old bottles are used for racking, and so life goes.

And then I buy a keg once or twice a year for the keg-o-rater.

        • I have a buddy (coincidentally named Jason) who takes cider and mixes ginger mashes and other flavors in to make an outstanding cider. I’m still lazy, and his simple advice on making cider is what I do. But he has an induction burner and tried recipes and processes that are incredible and produce an incredible product. He’s also in the process of distilling his own whiskey and experimenting with various flavors involving peat and burnt barrels and such. It’s all too complicated for me to want to try it, but the science is fascinating.

Public service announcement of the day:
Hey kids. If you want to learn how to make excellent beer, ale, wine or spirits, you take yourself to Oregon State and get yourself a degree in that field. Yup… we got it here.

  30. This week’s “game-thread comment of the week” winner brought to you by JasontheBeaver is:

    CraigBeav says:
That Super Beta Prostate commercial was horrifying… I don’t want my prostate to ever be the size of a lemon.

    scotty says:
Live long enough and it will grow to the size of Chip Kelly’s head

    Congrats Scotty!

  31. Riley’s a weak ass “shell” of a coach… I’d rather have Tinks coach the football team and Wayne hasn’t won a game yet. What the eff was that postgame interview? College football coaches should not be using words like scared. Another win that feels like a loss.

  32. Ward rushes for something like 128 and had an 8.3 yards per carry average and all Riley can think about is more passing. Unfortunately that tells me Riley likes a softer style of play. Up 31 or up 10 in the 2nd half and you should be upping your rushing attack to ice the game how you are supposed to and maintaining or widening your margin of lead.

Main thing is to keep doing what you were doing and not change or soften your desire for more TDs just because you have a nice lead. Riley seems to not be able to get out of his way when the situation is good.

    • tell me, what was our yard per carry in the second half? What was our yard per completion in the second half? After Hawaii starts loading the box to stop the run, who do you trust more: Mannion’s arm, or woods/ward to get through our offensive line?

This comment is about as good as angry’s attempt to call the outcome of the game.

      • After we took the 31 point lead, we had five straight possessions which resulted in punts and one more possession of victory formation. Within those five possessions, we had 11 runs for 46 yards and 10 passes for 23 yards.

You can probably answer your third question yourself.

  33. Lots of penalties, turnovers at ridiculous times, bad play calling, …. Jeezus, Riley, what did you say to them at halftime??? Make Hawaii look good??

That was just very poor coaching, both ingame and in preparation. DONT TRY TO RETURN A KICKOFF IF YOU ARE IN THE END ZONE! This isnt rocket science, Riley.

Oregon comes on super strong in their second half…..we just about fade completely away. Thats coaching.

    • Yeah, I just finished reading the Goe article, apparently he doesn’t realize a game is 4 quarters and includes all facets of the game over the course of those 4 quarters. He’s having an orgasm over a decent defense against a lower level Mountain West team. At least the announcers of the game had enough common sense to note that this type of performance would not cut it against most of the P-12.

  34. Wow. Hit the DVR and woke up this morning to watch the finish of a 38-7 game.
Stupidly thought it would involve getting a peak at some of the young players on O.
Thank god we have a designated special teams coach! Blowout turned into a nail biter by mistakes, penalties, and a sprinkling of bad play calling. Quote by the little woman. “They are such an irritating team to watch.” Pretty much sums it up.
Too bad Boom has not been playing DE for the past three years.
Sapulo has been a total waste of a scholarship. He gets tossed around like a rag doll.
    Alexander gets another injury.
    Bolden showing some progress.
Kemp with his first reception of the year! Clueless announcing crew.
Normal coach would be pissed off in post game interview. MR? Punished the team by not allowing any hip, hips in the locker room.

  35. “False start Oregon State. The defense jumped into the neutral zone, causing the offense to jump.”
This was the explanation by the ref during the game. No one on the Beavs sideline batted an eye at this. So frustrating.

  36. On the way to Hawaii we took a wrong turn and ended up on Grand Cayman. We missed the game, but man oh man, does the staff ever learn or adjust? Change the football mascot from the Beaver to the Groundhog. How can you not find one lousy series for the backup QB? How can you accept two weeks in a row with 13 penalties against an inferior opponent? How can you not get the young running backs a few plays? Where is the University level intelligence by the leadership? A couple of years ago I compared Riley to Mack Brown because they were both mailing the effort in and were delegating everything but the paycheck. I do think that Perry, Bray and Brennen (and a few others) are earning their keep by recruiting, coaching and pushing their charges to excel. But when the leader coasts, the result is community college rather than world class University.

  37. Progressive quality in play and sustained, competitive, well-played league play seem highly unlikely. Riley talks about the need to constantly improve, but is incapable of constantly and consistently improving the play quality of his team.

It is not interesting to watch this kind of coaching and results over and over.

    • Aloha from Hawaii! Great Beaver turnout for the game… And I must say UH has one of the best tailgating atmospheres there is.. All kinds of talent and drums dancing with excess drinking.

As for the game typical Riley.. Took a chance to make a statement and create positive momentum and turned it into. Mediocre win .. What a damm shame.

  38. I have seen this time and time again with Riley. Get a good lead takes the team into a shell. Defense, who was playing a terrific game, ends up being on the field non-stop at the end which wears them out and all the sudden the team we were beating down makes a run come back. Meanwhile we all are sitting here with our mouths wide open. Unbelievable. Time for Riley to go or at least turn the play calling over. They won, but as usual I don’t feel good about it.

    • I never thought I’d say that again in the foreseeable future.

BTW does anybody doubt that if Hawaii had recovered the onside kick that they would’ve won the game?

  39. Thus far, Garret’s impact seems limited to Mannion’s improved mechanics, perhaps suggesting he’s really more of a qb coach than an O coordinator (?).

    • Yeah, I kind of wondered about the QB thing. Noticed when it was first announced that he’d coach from the sidelines that only the value of eye-to-eye communication with Sean was mentioned as the basis of the decision.
I agree with your assessment of Garrett’s impact so far. I’d hoped for so much more, still better than Langs.

      • I didn’t mean to imply the limitation is Garret; I think it is Riley. If Garret were allowed the responsibility to actually coordinate the offense, I think we’d see a better run:pass balance and diversity of play calling. Maybe even better pacing.

  40. Seems about that time to have a mature discussion about OSU Football after Riley. After this year I get the sense there are alot of fans who want to be in the last 2-3 years of Riley. That would mean targeting a new coach for the 2017 or 2018 seasons and beginning a new chapter which by that time has to be healthiest for OSU. I prefer Masarri make that choice. If BDC isn’t extended beyond 2016 it would be good timing. My preference is Riley step down to pass forward the torch for the 2017 season to someone like Justin Wilcox. Our defense will be stout and we can find a nice OC to go with it. The Riley era can’t last for too many years longer if OSU has more aspirations beyond being a small time novelty every once in awhile and he has had as much time as anyone currently in NCAA football with just mediocre results. As a university that values the pursuit of knowledge we must pursue further ourselves to become more.

How would others ideally like to see this transition occur and how soon?

  41. You know, they didnt even finish the first half well. The end of the first half was filled with coaching errors. And then the second was so bad, we forgot about the end of the first half.

      • I don’t think there was much until the clock was winding down and time management became a part of the game. Then it was apparent we had nobody with any common sense on the sideline. We called some TOs when Hawai’i had the ball in order to give ourselves another possession. We let some time run off before the first TO, but the next was done immediately. When we got the ball, we tried to dink and dunk and got nowhere fast enough that we actually had to give up the ball again.

  42. Any of you guys watch the Ray Rice video? How he only got a 2 game suspension while all these other dudes get longer for weed is beyond me. Ray Ray should be in an orange jumpsuit. It’s on tmz if you want to watch it. Knocks his fiancée out cold with a 2 punch combo in a casino elevator. Then drags her body half way out so he can collect the belongings without the doors closing. Messed up

    • WHOA!!!!!

The NFL is responding to the release of this video by saying they were not given this video at the time they levied discipline on Rice. Today is the first time they have seen this video.

I’m thinking they’re going to give Rice a little more than two games now.

      • That’s what I was wondering. I’m curious to see where this goes. I figured no matter what this video release is going to spark outrage from all over the place and they’d have to do some kind of damage control.

I know if Joe Blow from Cleveland cold cocked his girlfriend in a casino elevator with video evidence he’d be spending some time in jail. Does this now create a problem for the local judicial system?

        • It should. The only saving grace (in a cold, unemotional take) is that he was efficient. It wasn’t a beating per se. So maybe law enforcement saw it this way and prosecuted for a lesser level battery?

          • I looked into it. There is no saving grace here. The DA wanted to shuffle it off and make it disappear as a misdemeanor. Then the grand jury looks at it and classifies it as felony assault. Then the DA decides to let Rice plea it down to a misdemeanor, like the grand jury never existed.

And now we’re hearing rumors that the NFL did see this tape.

Why the hell would they lie? Now this is going to be a big mess where people (probably not the right people) will lose their jobs.

  43. What is it people say in here? “Wash, rinse, repeat?” Riley’s comments in a teleconference call Monday morning:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/09/mike_riley_post-hawaii_we_did.html

Gina(?) or someone brought up the potential inclusion of Chris Brown in the running game, butapparently Mike Riley, one-of-the-best-and-most-underrated-coaches-in-the-game, finds it too hard:

“On if Chris Bown could get involved in the running game:

“I don’t know. It’s hard to plan for three (backs to get carries). We’ve got a pretty good older duo (with Storm Woods and Terron Ward). Chris Brown is a good football player, and I have no reservations about playing him at all. It’s just not that easy to do and fit it all in together. But I’d like to. And like I said, I have no reservations whatsoever (about) him playing.”

If only finding roles for talented players were as easy as equivocating. Darn!

  44. Nice all around day in the NFL for former OSU players, If anyone watched the ALT/NO game, it seemed almost every series an OSU player was mentioned.

    Cooks with a great debut.
Jackson still effective in reduced playing time,
Rodgers with a great TD run.
Lewis with a few nice plays and many mentions by the tv guys.
    DA with a nice game.
Wheaton showing what he can do when fully healthy.
    Chrichton with a tfl.
Poyer with a couple tackles. Wonder if he got to cover Wheaton?
Dwan edwards is still in the league and got a sack yesterday.

  45. The closeness of the game was all on the coaches. The defense couldn’t do much having to defend 20 yards or less three times. The errors were all mental.

Mannion with a terrible pick and two more that he got away with.
Dockery needed to secure the ball on the return.
Punt protection – failure to see the extra guy rushing. I’ve never seen a punt blocked with the shield formation.

Luckily they played well enough in the 1st half that UH couldn’t recover.

I watched a bit of the SDSU game, they played fearlessly at North Carolina and came within 3 yards of winning. They have a bye week too so less likely they will have a hangover coming in two weeks. SDSU is going to be a tough game. But maybe that’s what this team needs.
