I’m still going with the Beavs in this one on the idea Riley learned from last week (ha ha!) and gets his play makers like Jarmon, Brown, and Villamin more reps. Probably wishful thinking, and this game will more likely come down to whether OSU’s defense can slow a good Cal offense. OSU’s offense matches up well vs Cal so I expect 30 something points.

  1. We have seen many times that expecting Riley &co to do something rational or obvious goes without a positive result.

So I expect the same muddled thinking, slow ingame reactions, bad clock management, poor play selection, etc….

Cal is beatable. Maybe Riley will choose this game to care enough…

  2. Riley wants 6 wins. A bowl game is the expectation set explicitly and implicitly by his contract structure. People respond to incentives.

I think Riley is all-in on any remaining game where we have a reasonable shot, until we hit the magic 6. Then we’ll revert to dinosaur mode.

That said, Riley all-in does not guarantee a win. Losing out would not shock me. I think the two most likely scenarios are:

Beat CAL and WSU. Lose the rest OR
Beat CAL and lose to WSU. WIn some other upset game down the stretch, where we’re a heavy underdog and the opponent disrepects us.

I call this a 6-6 season. And like Tedford’s last few years, we’ll win enough games to have a reasonable record (on paper) to which supporters will rally, but all wins will be against bad teams and we will be uncompetitive against good teams.

  3. Riley likely shits himself again. Cal will have reasonable offensive production but Oregon St stalls out a couple more times and on the clutch. Get your pitchforks and torches out and don’t tolerate this awful product. Riley is in a downward slump that will keep happening in most games until he is gone. Lose tonight to a bad team he is supposed to beat and this program is spinning down the toilet in Riley’s shit until he disappears.

  4. A loss tonight seals DeCareLess not being around to further f*ck OSU past 2016. He would be done. That is worth alot more to Oregon State moving forward than maybe getting a who cares bowl that means we will have that many more losses to be force fed in the future under an underperforming and mistake prone Riley in obvious decline.

  5. TCU game shows why being pass happy is a dumb OSU strategy in the vast majority of games against decent teams. All West Virginia or teams have to do is hold just enough to make completion very difficult to near impossible and 2/3 of the time the refs don’t call it. Amazingly they played good D, got the ball back and made long FG to win at the buzzer.

Look for Heismannion to be sacked 5 times tonight and Riley gets too pass happy again because some aren’t that far from being completed but aren’t. Wake me up when Riley & BDC are gone and OSU is ready to strive for something more. Riley’s inability in all games that might make anyone take notice is dreadful. Seen the same old script in loss after loss but he changes nothing.

Won’t travel to see this team anymore and there are thousands more tonight not attending that are voting with their wallets. Its the best hope we have to wrap this farce up in the next couple years and move on. Hip Hip Horrific!

  6. Washington State getting trounced in the fog and rain in front of about 300, not counting the band, remaining fans. For a minute I thought they were replaying one of my games from the epic 96 season in good old Parker. JB

PS: What’s the over/under on Mannequin err Mannion sacks tonight? I predict at least five.

    • Losing containment on Mariota way too easily. Pretty much, everything Stanford has done right on defense the last two years, they aren’t doing tonight.

    • Good news for Mannion too. His Pac-12 passing record will last more than a couple weeks now. Seemed there was so much chatter about Mannion breaking the record but Halliday was going to blow right by him within a week or two.

  7. Cant understand how blind refs can be missing the blatant horsecollar duck defender uses to prevent the Stanford TD. Right in front of two refs and ripped him down by the neck of his jersey. Stanford scored on the next play anyway, but how does that play get by with a no-call?

  8. Feels like the Oregon lead should be a lot larger than it is right now. Stanford comes out strong on the opening drive of the 2nd half, and it’s a legitimately interesting game.

    • Might be fantasy, but it would be nice to see Stanford score on that first possession and then see if their D has made any adjustments. Duck receivers are running wide open, they have to get more pressure on Mariota. Duck defense has not stopped Stanford, if the Cards had a slightly better QB they could be ahead.

  9. The most annoying thing to me about watching this Oregon game is the reminder of how easily we had the “black out” theme stolen from us within our own state. I still can’t believe how quickly BDC caved to the PC police on that one. Instead we get “bold in black” aka wear-whatever-you-want-while-our-rivals-make-a-marketing-campaign-out-of-the-color (shade?)-we’ve-worn-for-decades.

  10. If Riley looks like he is losing this there will be a “Poopy Play of the Game” nominee time near the end of the game. A way for suffering fans to call out worst moments if Riley shits his panties again.

    • they’ve got some injured guys not playing tonight. But yeah, I’m interested in seeing that defense stack up against the ducks

  11. Caleb Smith with a false start and drops a 1st down catch on 3rd down. Kostol with 3 punts for 30, 34 and 29 yards. Way to earn that paycheck Reid. This team is beyond fucking dysfunctional

  12. Is John Embree available? Matt Wells, Jim McElwain or Ed Orgeron all would be so much better than watching Riley incessantly crap away games.

  13. What is Smith’s “deal? I mean, no offense, but you’re at home, not on the road in front of a loud. What’s with all the false starts, is he not so pretty bright?

  14. Game going about how I expected so far. OSU scoring but Cal quickly responding with a TD helps me reach the 65 combined points I need for the OVER call on 64.5. Bears winning is my main bet and with Riley on the sideline I am feeling good.

  15. I’d like to see some Jarmon in the passing game. Not sure what is going on there. Villamin seems hit or miss; gets open but can’t finish plays consistently yet.

  16. On that CAL TD beavs audibled into a zone pass protection. Also, Larry Scott does not go to the ball at all on curl routes. He notices the WR not near him and as he turns around the ball is thrown to that WR and Scott has to wait to make a play in order to not be called for a penalty. Aka, he’s not a very good DB.

  17. I can forgive Murphy cuz he is on defense, but Villamin has GOT to catch that that.

How often does the Banker defense always seem a half step or half arm away from sacking the qb? #sameold

  18. Riley up to his usual ways. Under performing and on his way to losing again. Put a fork in Riley. And BDC. The dud duo can go out together.

    • Seriously. I know smith has been bad but he was wide open for the 1st down amd mannion chose to go to woods for a loss of yards on 3rd and short? Is mannion just refusing to go to smith?

  19. I enjoy reporting my stolen bike to Springfield police more than listening to Beaver football game tonight. Let’s see, what’s for dinner tonight now…

  20. Caleb Smith is a huge disappointment. I thought he had NFL talent. What we can’t see on film is the guy’s will or game smarts. Apparently he has neither. He plays anxious, too.

  21. Our defense is inept. Banker and his prevent allow so much of a cushion it’s like Goff playing catch with his receivers. I sense a TD right before the half by Cal. I’m going to report my bike was just stolen and Lasco for Heisman.

  22. My lady just said, “that goddamn chainsaw.”…lol

    I said, “you hate it!”

She says, “I do. It’s all bark and no bite.”

I think I’ll go bang this hilarious girl instead of watching this boring game. On the plus side, Riley is one game closer to being fir—

    oh wait….

    • That chainsaw sound always reminds me of the scene in American wedding when Stiffler get caught in the hallway by his girlfriend.

“Suck on my titties like you’re milking a cow! Muaaaaahhhh! Muaaaaaahhhh!”

  23. Riley needs to retire and become an ambassador. Good ambassador, bad coach. He could be a Jim Gilstrap type. Just offer to move him somewhere away from the field without embarrassing him and he might accept it.

    • He just wants to milk the OSU situation. If he no longer can he will move to San Antonio. He has enough money to live well doing nothing for 20+ years. His BS story about painting gandrails at Parker in the 60s has grown old like himself. I had better jobs while at OSU and don’t think I am some shitty Paterno of the West. He is failing pretty miserably from what I see.

  24. Is the pac 12 network live stream working terribly for anybody else? constantly jumping in amd out of hd and skips 30 seconds forward amd back over and over. Not sure if its my shitty computer or the site, but every other game i watched today streamed just fine

  25. Cal has a terrible defense, which just highlights how bad the offense is. I thought Mannion would be able to do something versus these guys, but he’s regressed so much and lost so much confidence he can’t even put up numbers versus bad defenses now.

  26. No sense of urgency as usual. They’ve given up. I mean you look at the sideline and when the coach is looking at the turf, arms folded and chewing gum down 17 then what do you expect? This team is a carbon copy of Opie’s demeanor. How sad.

  27. This is great!! This is great!! Everything is going to turn around now! I just know it! I’m so excited. I just know Riley knows how to lead this team now! Come on guys…let’s go!

  28. Jeepers this is exciting! This team is sharp, well-prepared, reflective of a dynamic, smart coach. I can hardly wait for what is ahead moving forward all the way until 2021 and beyond!

  29. Game is going perfect for me. Won on the OVER on the prior Cal TD. Now 3 more puts Cal in decent shape. I was counting on Riley mistakes in the clutch and that Mannion pick qualifies. Now Mannion sacked for a 10 yard loss. Riley picks bad play on 4th down. Thinking new Samsung 50″. Thank you Sheriff of Mayberry. Candy from a baby.

  30. Third down pick up by Cal clinches it and is a perfect representation of the game. Hit the receiver past the sticks and Beavs miss the tackle.

  31. IMO at 34-31 Mannion has to lead a game winning drive. People will say I am picking on Mannion. Not really. That’s what great QBs do. Accumulators set passing records and lose. We have an accumulator at QB not a winner. Bummer.

    • The time for making excuses for Mannion is long past. Great skill set on paper but very non-clutch.

Along the lines of what could have been…Mannion had a lot of promise as a freshman. His sophomore year pre-injury he played the best football of his career. Since that injury he has never been the same. It’s like the whole injury/QB carousel permanently damaged his confidence.

      • That was what I didn’t get. Down two scores with one and a half minutes and zero tosses past even 5-10 yards? I seriously don’t get Riley.

        • As my new friend CraigBeav says – Eff Mike Riley!

Caving and letting other teams spank you at home is his MO. I think he believes that the TO’s are accumulating so that he can utilize them later. Eff Mike Riley.

I get this feeling that other coaches love him since they can mail it in against him.

    • Nice winning attitude huh? Thought this was the year with the senior qb?-It is!!, the team and Riley are really clicking on the same page. Its a neat deal. This team is a mirror image of their Oppy leader. Hows that for an identity!

      • That’s the issue. They were going to lose either way, but play it out correctly and take your timeouts with a few shots at the endzone and then hope for an onside kick. The Beavs didn’t even get close to that scenario because of botching of the basics.

  32. Ok folks, Let’s have a few nominees for Poopy Play of the Game…I’ll put ‘Winner’ under the one I think best defines this loss in a long string of losses. 1 for 10 in last conference games and 1 for 13 vs ranked teams. Wow. Horrible.

      • Maybe Chris Brown should have gone past the sticks? Or because it’s a mistake from your boy Chris Brown maybe you won’t call that at mistake.

      • Winner. I went back and watched them and it was ugly. Throwing it away is fine but not lame ducking it. Mannion was already 11 yards behind the line of scrimmage and still farting around. I like Angry’s as a runner up as that series also was bad. Mannion took a 10 yard sack on 2nd and 6. You can’t do that. A hard Chris Brown run or draw would have been wiser. Riley never properly factors in what can go wrong when teams predict you will pass when pressured and pin their ears back. Riley even died with the pass trying to get 2 yards.

    • Poopy play was the post game handshake, Riley looked like he was happy to give Dykes the victory. No wonder he’s the most popular amongst his peers. And I use peers loosely.

  33. What I expected. Civil war will be a blood bath.

We are the last place team. Just wait until after next week. Even wsu will end better than us.

  34. I liked making money tonight but would rather have a winning football program with a winner’s attitude. How low does it have to get? These recent records are the shittiest I have ever seen. I thought Riley’s record at San Diego was as horrible as anyone could do, but Riley is making his running out of town there look like his golden years now.
There are way better coaches out there who are not all washed up.

  35. Our gal Lindsay tweets some inside scoop:
“Can’t help but wonder if OSU fans will be happier next year when OSU starts to do some zone read stuff, as is expected.”

She still doesn’t understand that most fans just want smart, passionate, 60 minute play.

    • What the hell does “zone read stuff” have to do with what happened tonight? You’re right the media just does not get it. Plus I don’t have a lot of confidence that a Riley coached team would run a zone option offense correctly anyway.

    • What the hell does she mean by “as is expected”???? If Riley said he intends to do some zone read, well, HE IS A LIAR!!!

And if he DID change to another system, he would still be the muddled thinker he is now, and screw it up.

The fans dont want RILEY to do anything but RETIRE! …and then we have at least a chance at some decent coaching…

  36. Enough of this Riley bs. How do you not fire this loser? He can’t beat anyone anymore. Not even crappy teams. If BDC had any class he would resign on Monday like the Michigan AD. No other school is in such a ridiculous shitty situation as OSU. Riley will have the last place team next year more likely than not. He has overstayed his welcome.

Burn the motherf*cker down. Oregon State deserves better than this debacle. F*ck you BDC, Goe and Riley!!!

  37. That Cal defense Oregon laid 59 on. The civil war is gonna be brutal. I’d be shocked if we came within 40 of the ducks. Another season flushed down the crapper.

  38. Not one FBS school out of 127 would keep Riley with this much consecutive losing. Only the most bottom barrel of FCS programs would even think about keeping him. If Puerto Rico had a team they wouldn’t keep him. How is it that at Oregon State in the Pac-12, BDC and Riley get away with this total flaming turd? Get rid of these idiots. Our position in the Pac-12 sells itself. BDC and Riley are chumps and had their time.

  39. Out of morbid curiousity i did a twitter search for “@coach_riley” to see what people are saying. found some real gems.

john Stark (@johnstark319) tweeted at 11:26 PM on Sat, Nov 01, 2014:
@Coach_Riley hey retard, down with less than 2 left, might want to teach your team to stop the run, pussy

Craig Miles (@craigsmiles) tweeted at 11:26 PM on Sat, Nov 01, 2014:
    @Coach_Riley Hip hip horrific! #GoBeavs

Reggie Koth (@r_dogg_13) tweeted at 11:16 PM on Sat, Nov 01, 2014:
Sonny Dikes. Winless last year in conference play. Out recruits mike Riley and then wipes his ass on the Reser turf. Epic Fail #GoBeavs

Mark Church (@M_E_Church) tweeted at 11:05 PM on Sat, Nov 01, 2014:
@Coach_Riley U cost the Beavs another win. Predictable and stupid play calling equals a loss to a lesser opponent. The game has passed u up!

  40. OOOOHHHH GOD DAMN!!!! This one is gonna hurt for awhile. unable to capitalize on so many opportunities….

Loss for words, this season seems lost. Worse yet, the future outlook appears dimmer than I can remember in some time….

We are SOOOO far away from where I thought we would be this season. I was expecting big things from Mannion, but I guess we’ll have to settle for the Pac12 record (by default) for passing yards and maybe we can still ruin the Ducks season or someone. Injuring Mariota or one of those fashion show queers from Eugene will have to do for remaining goals for this season.

    #GOBEAVS #3RDDOWNCHAINSAWS

    • Houston Beavs:

You and your punk-ass mentality neatly encapsulates what is wrong with your program. You settled upon a moronic goal that does nothing at all to address the systemic failure that has swamped your program, which is really thanks to BDC and his ridiculous contract for a washed up head coach.

Why don’t you direct your juvenile rage where it belongs?

  41. Riley cant come close to beating Cal at home … Holy shiiiiit….

He will get blown out by the Ducks second string… (assuming Helfrich has some mercy and puts them in at the end of the first quarter when the score is 35-0….)

  42. I suppose Riley believed this team would “gel” half-way into the season, as Riley’s more successful teams have done in the past, salvaging the season from a few disastrous early losses, finishing up at 7-5 or 8-4 and a trip to some minor bowl game, which would be a “success” in Riley’s world. Problem is, this team shows no sign of “gelling.” If anything, the opposite appears to be happening. One reason why might be the talent level. They don’t have the same kind of players nor the depth they’ve had across the board on both sides of the ball. Plus it might well be the case that college football has passed Riley by and he hasn’t kept up with the evolution of the game.

    • I think that in terms of physical attributes and ability, height, weight, speed, this team has better athletes than OSU used to get in the pat, but it might as well be Kragthorpe and his crew airing it out and getting beat most weekends.

This team has little to no chance of gelling; the senior QB and LBs are not providing the leadership, the coaching staff sure isn’t, fundamentals of tackling and blocking are breaking down again…

Do NOT expect a competitive CW like last year where OSU discovered it could run the ball. I don’t see any wins on the calendar unless WSU can’t recover from the loss of it’s starting QB.

    • I think much of the problem is Riley refusing to engage himself in the flow of the game. … to make adjustments as the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team reveal themselves. He doesnt engage enough to even monitor and act according to time constraints.

So he is relatively easy prey for opposing coaches. No wonder they all praise him…..lol.

      • Hey, if Joe Pa didn’t even know what state he was in the last five or six years of his tenure and got away with it, why can’t Riley be a “hands off” leader? He’s got Read, Banker, Cavanaugh to lead the players! Fold your arms, chew gum and pump your fist a few times a game, it’s a great day to be a Beaver!

  43. From Egger’s piece, “they stuck to the running game,” OSU safety Ryan Murphy said. “Credit to them. They did a good job of executing and we didn’t.”

Of course Murphy was surprised, he’s never seen the Beaver offense do it, even when successful.

    • I miss the fire Banker talk, he seems to be getting a free pass. I’d like to see a desperate Riley axe Banker and Cavanaugh after this season as a gesture that he’s serious about a turn around.

      • That piece came out a few weeks that said Banker has had “multiple offers” and chooses to stay because he and Riley are so tight. I think that re-affirms that Riley won’t ever fire Banker because they and their wives are best friends. Cav I could see though, he curses which is a big Riley no-no.

    • That play stood out to me as well, as it shows how thoroughly he has been coached not to scramble, but on that play- with no other choice but get hit- it showed he could scramble a little. So this falls back to Riley, who has clearly outlawed scrambling even when an easy first down seems a short stroll away.

  44. Watching Steelers/Ravens … isnt our Marcus Wheaten a Pittsburg receiver? He introduced himself as from Chandler High School…. lol…. dis-owning OSU, but who can blame him….

  45. Charlie Batch laughed at me when I told him the Steelers were going on a 6 game winning streak right after the Browns loss. 3 W’s since, 3 to go Charles.

      • Two points is two points.

In fact, scoring from under the basket is seemingly more and more a lost art… as was evidenced by OSU’s play for the last umpteen years.

    • Never really been a hoops guy, but just placed an order for two tickets. At least feel like this program is moving in the right direction.

      • I probably won’t be driving down to Corvallis for any games, but I’ll be going to the UofP game in Portland this year. Never been to the Chiles center and have been looking forward to it.

  46. Caleb Smith… I can’t remember a game where he wasn’t penalized. When Mannion throws an interception he gets pounded on by people. That is going to happen when you are airing out the ball 53 million times (even though Storm was averaging 8.7 yards per carry). The bad guy in this game for me was Caleb Smith. Riley needs to sit his butt on the bench.

    Closer look at the numbers:
    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/11/taking_a_closer_look_at_number_5.html

0: It was a tough outing for tight end Caleb Smith. The Oregon State junior was flagged for a false start, a personal foul and unsportsmanlike conduct, and he dropped a first-quarter pass. He also notched zero catches.
