I tweeted this idea during the game and it was popular on twitter.
Riley needs to retire and become an ambassador. Offer to move him into a position off the field without embarrassing him and he might accept
I know everyone thinks money is the major issue, and it is definitely an issue, but I think a large part of the problem here is that Riley does not want to be humiliated, and the media/athletic department do not want to humiliate him. Everyone likes Riley. Hell I even like him as a human being. I just don’t think he can take this program to any relevant level. So the idea can’t be to just fire him. At least not yet while they’re still drawing good attendance. If fans stop going maybe then they’ll have no choice but to fire him. But right now it’s unlikely because attendance is okay and everyone (the media and most fans) loves him as a person.
So the plan has to be to move him somewhere else in the athletic department. Maybe an ambassador who goes around the country doing interviews and promoting OSU, or someone who can visit recruits and close the deal, etc. I’m just throwing some ideas out there. He definitely cannot become AD. That would be even worse than BDC. But a more harmless and vague yet prestigious sounding title like “ambassador” might trick him into giving up coaching.
Nothing is going to change this year, but next year looks bad on paper, and if they win 3 games or so attendance will start to drop rapidly and there will be more converts. In order to avoid making a hasty decision, the AD should start thinking about this now and developing a succession plan, and one that does not humiliated Riley. That is the only way this era will end in a natural way that feels good for all involved.
Eggers on cue with the Riley is the right man stuff: http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/239170-105147-some-upgrades-in-order-at-osu-but-with-same-coach-
He is right that if we stick with Riley things will turn to an upswing. But that is capped at like 8 wins and a CW loss, mostly directly because of his flaws.
Riley hinting OSU may move to the spread next year. Pressure must really be on.
He’s just trying to prove the game hasn’t passed him by. This is like when Neil Young started making electronic music in the 1980s. Epic fail. Riley might install the spread but it won’t run correctly because it’s not him.
Electronic? Like Depeche Mode?
Ewww…. really?
At least come up with someone less than just turn the dial disgusting.
Honestly, OSU doesn’t even need a spread offense.
All OSU needs is a good defense that stops the spread (since everyone and their mother uses it now in the PAC-12) and a simplified playbook on offense so the players don’t have to be spending 2+ years learning it.
Also, I would much rather have OSU be an innovator and find a new OC that will install an entirely new type of offense instead of just following the rest of the PAC-12 herd and going with the spread.
Blah, blah, blah. And we have to be more balanced.
45 passes, 23 runs. Who’s fault is that coach?
that has dumpster fire written all over it
He was referring to having Nutella vs peanut butter at the training table.
So, maybe Lindsey was on to something. Not only a mention of some spread, but even considering some no huddle.
Is the s l o o o w thinking Riley capable of instituting any significant change in, even, the next two years?
And, how about Eggers trying to convince readers that Riley is, “… a tremendous competitor. He wants to win…”.
OT: what happened to the detail oriented approach we heard so much of from Garrett.
no huddle actually makes sense, spread sounds like a bad idea.
Agree, no huddle makes sense, been saying that for some time now. However, from the looks of Riley’s two minute “red ball” offense, there is little reason to expect successful implementation of a legitimate no huddle. I’d love to believe it…………..when I see it!
You’re right, there’s never any detail….it’s all cliches and generalities from Riley. I also love Egger’s disclosure at the end about 50 years of friendship. Maybe a little conflict of interest in doing an opinion piece there Eggers?
Do you guys actually believe any of this shit coming out of Riley’s mouth? It’s all lip service. Like the run/pass balance. We’ve been hearing it from him for years yet it still continues to not happen.
Someone gets it.
None of us believe it.
What I find strange is that Mannion is a 5th year guy and how often does he audible? It seems to me like this rarely happens. Does Riley have Mannion on that short of a leash? Is Mannion really that dumb that he can’t be trusted to read the D and change plays at the LOS? Mannion sounds articulate in interviews and is a coaches son, I have a hard time believing he is too inept to let him open it up a bit. I tend to think Riley is just that stubborn that he can’t allow the people he is around the opportunity to actually maximize their talents. When Riley mentions attention to detail I think what he means is he is going to micromanage everything which is a terrible way to lead.
The hurry up to me is a great idea and should be practiced every day. You need to be able to move the ball quickly in any close game and having the ability to run it in non-hurry up situations is a great twist.
The spread idea sounds awful. We don’t have great personnel for it and I imagine it won’t be the read option as Riley would probably end up dictating if the QB is supposed to keep it or not before the play meaning it wouldn’t even rely on the players making the reads. We ran a few read option runs with Katz and they looked quite unnatural.
I haven’t seen anything that tells me Mannion has on field “smarts”. And also regarding, the interception on Saturday, I don’t think he was trying to throw it 10 yards into the stands, I think he was trying to throw it to the tight end at an impossible angle when he should have just taken the sack.
I just finished reading the Eggers article and once again we have to listen to the same ole arguments. I am so sick and tired of “we can’t recruit to Corvallis” or “we don’t have a big donor like Phil Knight” and the one I love the most “Riley is such a nice guy and we don’t know what we have in him” arguments. Those arguments do not answer why the team can’t play good football. The logic is flawed. For example: because we don’t have a big time donor, then we play bad football (i.e. time management issues, bad tackling, inability to make adjustments during the game, inability defend against a mobile QB, etc…) doesn’t make sense. These are the same arguments the media says over and over and as we all know they will never bring up the real issues.
Why am I a bad Beaver fan for wanting a coach who can manage the clock or be able to make game adjustments during a game? Is it because I’m not giving him a pass on the bad product because “he is a nice guy”. I’m not saying Riley needs to do something radical like go to a spread offense (like angry said that would be even worse), just play fundamental football and expect that out of your players and expect only the best from your coaches or they are benched/out. There have been so many games over the years Riley could of won with just managing the game better. What most of the fans want is for the team to play good football, but when we get the same promise year after year that things will change in the off season and then we see nothing does change and that Riley keeps making the same mistakes, it makes the fans feel like the only thing to do that will fix the real issues is to get rid of Riley.
If the media can’t understand that, then they just need to stick to reporting on the game and stop writing articles that defend Riley. I’m a knowledgeable and passionate fan that can see what the real issues are and don’t need reporters, that think they know more than me, to try to convince me with quotes from Rich Brooks that I just don’t get it as a fan.
I guess I need to read the Eggers article.
Hold on.
First:
“There are a lot of descriptions thrown out there about Riley these days. Soft. Too nice a guy. Stubborn. Old-fashioned. His pro-style offense is predictable, unimaginative. The game has passed him by.”
I think “his” should be in quotations. I believe if you think the game has passed him by you must disqualify yourself from the first four points in the above paragraph.
“This has been our most down year.”
I must point everyone to this one quote. This is a quote of a 4-4 coach who has really had worse seasons than this. Maybe he thinks those season were worse because he chose for them to be worse? I don’t know. This is obviously not our most down year. I have zero clue what our most astute leader is saying.
“A victory over Cal would have assuaged some of the angst. Two plays — a dropped touchdown pass by Jordan Villamin, a potential pick-six dropped by Ryan Murphy — resulted in an 18-point swing that was crucial in a 45-31 loss.”
A FUCKING POTENTIAL PICK-SIX?????????????
WHAT THE FUCK KERRY??????????
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding? Should I read the rest of your wholly unprofessional apology piece?
I’m going to read the rest out of respect for your former integrity. But I will also break it down objectively. You should be more than ashamed of yourself.
“Oregon State’s defense played well through most of its first five games.”
No… if you actually watched the games you would see they really didn’t.
Okay…
I broke that off because I just started reading your conflation of the Cal and Stanford games.
Holy fucking shit!
TIM_OS is 100% correct.
The fucking lies and excuses about why someone PAID MORE THAN A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR TO COACH A FUCKING GAME are being puked all over a Kerry Eggers article.
Kerry, you once had gravitas. You now have puke all over your writing.
I’m more disappointed in you than I am in a game, a coach, a school. I thought I had an honest scribe.
I was so so very wrong.
If anyone wants to know who our latest commit was, his name might be Antoine Albert.
Fucking stupid apologist ass-holes!!!!!!!!!
Where did you read about Albert? Have thought it was strange that we haven’t heard anything yet about the latest IAGDTBAB tweet.
Sorry… that’s maybe right, maybe wrong. I was told the kid who committed last week didn’t want his name out. If I were to guess, nothing being heard means it’s a JUCO player. So it’s a complete guess on my part. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
other site reporting it’s a corner back. So in other words, future flail backer
and if my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle
“Maybe an ambassador who goes around the country doing interviews and promoting OSU, or someone who can visit recruits and close the deal, etc. I’m just throwing some ideas out there. He definitely cannot become AD. That would be even worse than BDC. But a more harmless and vague yet prestigious sounding title like “ambassador” might trick him into giving up coaching.”
I suggested this a few years ago too…he just can’t be the one evaluating the talent. Let somebody else do the evaluation and make the offers, Riley be the good guy to provide “family image,” “clean program,” etc…that many parents and students probably really do like.
Maybe Riley could ride his bike around the country, visiting recruits. Sort of like his own little football oriented Mormon mission.
Like Pee Wee Herman
He does spend alot of time in San Antonio. You know what else is in San Antonio????…….The basement of the Alamo…..
“I wanted to make sure our players, coaches and recruits know this is a program that will have an identity and will last.”
I thought they were still searching for their identity. Newsflash coach, you’ll find it somewhere in between the next false start, we need to run the ball more statement, a 3 yd pass on 3rd and 7 and delay of game penalty. Also look for the remaining timeouts you have at halftime. Might find your identity there as well.
Derek Anderson chimes in to support Riley. Lots of back and forth with fans in comments.
Derek Anderson (@DAnderson314) tweeted at 0:34 PM on Mon, Nov 03, 2014:
Here is the deal beaver fans coach is our guy! We need some help on the oline and dline. We are in a bit of a transition. Everyone relax!
I’m chiming in.
Saw your back and forth with DA. He doesn’t appear to be an angrybeavs fan
DA wasn’t known for being a rocket surgeon between the ears
Rocket surgeon…. i like that….
Derek Anderson only knows the old, more energetic Riley. I might stand by him if he were still the same Riley….but he isnt.
The trouble is . . . Eggers, Canzano, etc., are saying what BDC and Ed Ray want to hear. The media support for Riley makes them smile and ignore idiotic fans. The money thing is right on – only then will the message get through. Riley has no doubts – already talking about next year. If Beaver fans stay away from the Civil War in droves – it might at least start the conversation, but I don’t hold out much hope..
Does anybody have the email address of Wesley Edens? Former Oregon State grad and current co-owner of the Milwaukie Bucks? We know he likes sports since he just bought the Bucks this past year, and Forbes has him listed as having a net worth of around $1.8 Billion. Maybe he’s be willing to part with some of it? It can’t hurt to ask can it?
Also, his daughter is pretty hot, so any involvement that family has with the program would be a huge bonus.
http://nypost.com/2014/05/22/bucks-owners-daughter-mallory-edens-actually-a-knicks-fan/
Dude just listed his $17M Manhattan apartment for sale. Maybe we can tempt him with his own personal luxury box high above Reser. It’s would be sortof similar to a Manhattan high rise
Sorry, I only have his hot daughter’s cell, not her dad’s email.
Can’t help you….
She’s 18??! She looks 40!
You say that like it’s a bad thing…..
She’s be hot at either age
I’m not saying it’s good or bad. Both have perks.
I am just shocked she is 18…
Wes Edens has probably already donated to OSU, but I would guess to the business school. He operates under the radar, unlike Phil Knight.
I’d do her in the 2 hole
All of this talk of Riley going spread or no-huddle is kind of silly. He can’t run a two minute drill on home field with a senior quarterback.
Riley can’t be something he’s not. He would look ridiculous and awkward. He might as well ditch the bike, drive to practice in a Bugatti Veyron, get out in dressed like Cliff Klingsbury with shades, and hit on OSU’s cheerleaders.
Get. A. New. Coaching. Staff.
Hell, within two years Riley and Banker would probably reluctantly acknowledge the change was good for them and the program.
Agree it is hilarious to think of him trying to run a hurry up offense or read option. He can’t even run his own pro offense while huddling.
He will likely do it to show he’s trying to evolve, though, which is kind of sad in a way.
It would end up embarrassing the program, it really would. It would be an example of how not to run those systems.
Remember at Wisconsin with Katz/Mannion, with that coach up in the booth calling him out?
It would be worse.
Yes, and that wasn’t just any coach, it was Urban Meyer.
And look at how quickly Gary Patterson and TCU demoted his assistants and changed his offense.
I’m not saying OSU needs to copy the Duck’s offense, but they clearly need to simplify the system, simplify how it’s communicated, and be capable of strategically varying pace.
If players like Brown, Jarmon, etc. were allowed to capitalize on their physical abilities in such a system, they could play faster, probably sooner, and then the ‘ol ball coach could add new plays from the formations later in the season to reduce predictability and capitalize off created mis-perceptions. Or so it seems to me….maybe Big Mike already does the last part and they just can’t execute.
The problem is that Riley has a soul in a environment where it pays to not have one. Riley is behind his guys until the end and that’s more than anyone can ask out of their boss. But in football, it can hurt you bad as it is right now.
Still wondering if he was “behind his guys” enough to have the PAC review the hit which took out Grimble.
Bronco Mendenhall fired his DC mid-season a couple of years ago after a defensive debacle that was less than what happened against the Huskies last year.
Riley cant even coach his guys to not false start in his current mired-in-mud offense. Can you imagine this amplified in a hurry-up?
I could see Garrett jumping back to NFL after seasons over then perhaps Riley brings in a spread guy? Wishful thinking, I know.
Also, ironic that Mannion’s stats are down now that Danny Langsdorf is gone:-)
Cooks is gone. There are the stats.
You know, I would be willing to watch Garrett be completely in charge of the offense for a couple of years. 100% in command of the scheme, the tempo and the plays, with one requirement : speed this motherfucker up. Don’t care how, just make it efficient and fast and scheme for the players you have on the roster.
I noticed vs Cal that Simple Jack had his play card out of his pocket and was yacking into his headset once they reached the red zone. Leave the fucking guy alone and let him call some plays.
“He would look ridiculous and awkward.” He looks ridiculous and awkward now – even without the props you cite.
Havent heard much bitching from fans yet ( maybe because nobody is going) but the ASU game has been scheduled for 7:45 PM. IF attendance is low for that game, the media will blame it on the time more than the fact nobody gives a damn about football after the past shitty performances we’ve witnissed.
Post-ASU last year was the “Riley Looks Like A Coach Who’s Out of Answers” video…Riley despondent, tired, shell-shocked…and out of answers.
ASU could have him failing the same test this year.
At least they can use last year’s ASU post game video. Same result and same lame answers… Succeesful and exciting programs don’t get the late slot on TV every week. It’s just an indication of the state of the program.
The color guys for the Cal game (not great btw) were talking about pace (lack thereof) and how gassed the D looked at the beginning of the 2nd half. Dude kept on saying that they shouldn’t be and that the Dline didn’t even know what stance to be in. Scrap and build like Tinks. All this bs about evolving into a spread is just lipstick on a pig. Riley’s the problem and nothing will change until he’s out of the program.
Lastly, it’s embarrassing that Riley has to have his buddies in the media and the bs coaching fraternity come up with the same old excuses to protect his ass and give him a cuddle. No wonder highly rated recruits pass on us, we have a wuss as a coach. Riley = trying to find our identity. Tinkle = play your balls off. There’s a difference.
I really think that a plan to ease BDC out should be first. I really don’t think he should continue after this year. His health will prevent him from doing his job.
If the Beavs lose out, the calls will grow to the point where Riley’s hand would be forced and he’d have to make serious changes to his staff (IE Banker and Garrett). I believe this would happen before Riley is fired.
I’ve met Riley a few times and he’s as genuine a guy as you could meet. It will not be a fun day if he doesn’t get to go out on his terms.
It’s not only his health but his values, philosophy. It’s tragic about his Parkinson’s but that’s not the issue and IMO never has been. BLC should be a #2 guy at the most, never the top guy. His skill set is back office and a modern AD has to be able to manage the overall program but should be front office oriented. BLC couldn’t sell a fire extinguisher in the Towering Inferno.
He also comes off abrasive as shit. That’s not who you want leading the charge in the athletic department
Guys, take a look at this video: This is the touchdown that California retook the lead on:
http://espn.go.com/ncf/video?gameId=400548300
Remember, the play before this, one of the Oregon State players was forced to leave the field for a play. His helmet came off.
Did anyone notice? Count the number of Beaver players.
Could’ve been a lone Beav out of the pic in the lower part of the end zone. The only thing I saw for sure is Larry Scott getting beat like a drum again.
You missed 11. On island to the far far right and only at the end. Way off to the right, lined up by himself, covering capser. Way to go Bruce Read!!!
I read somewhere that there seemed to be a couple of plays where our D was a man short. If true that’s inexcusable but not all that surprising with our staff. Our offense plays 10 vs. 11 since Mannion doesn’t count. He really should have left last year. 3rd round projection (I thought 5th round) but he’ll be lucky to get drafted this year. That interception should never happen with a 4 year starter.
Count the players in the frame at the start. There are only 9. As far as I can see there is only one more that ever shows up in the picture.
I think you’re right. Looks like 11 vs, 10, Riley just being nice to Dykes for not hanging 50 on us or the invisible defender got a red card…. Wait, wrong sport.
I’m seeing red, does that count? :)
You guys act like if Riley doesn’t get to go out on his own terms that there will be hell to pay. Riley knows how caustic the coaching world can be. I knows he has to perform. He knows that the conference is getting more and more competitive from top to bottom. He knows that there is smoke coming from his seat. I can’t say that he would ever step down because he has a contract for quite a few more years and his paycheck doesn’t suck. That being said, there is a lot that he could do to improve the team and the coaching staff beneath him.
The issue is innovation. OSU has very little of it with regard to recruiting. Even the rebranding with the flying hamster didn’t help anything and that wasn’t Riley’s fault. Corvallis is a great town, it isn’t hard to recruit there. Anyone that says that is an idiot. Riley needs to clean house. I was hopeful that Garret would add something, but so far I don’t know if he just isn’t used or is really just a shitty coach. He seems to not be that involved.
Things are in a freefall this year, and it hurts because the Arizona teams are doing well, Cal looks improved, WSU is still a wild card, and Washington could be very dangerous in a year or two. We are tired of being a door mat, and that is where we are headed again.
Nothing changes with BDC there.
I read somewhere that Riley and or his publicist said that he wants to be the Joe Pa of the west. You gotta be shittin me! Although Paterno’s final days were sad he was one of the best coaches of all time. The only comparison that could be made is that both coaches stayed too long and that they were too loyal but at least Paterno won championships and made Penn St one of the storied programs in college football.
Another thing that drives me crazy is that there is absolutely no heat on Riley for losing six years in a row to the rival. That alone would cost many a coach their jobs. Here the media almost pat him on the back and say “we know it’s impossible going up against Phil Knight’s money”, we understand.
Riley saying …anything…has no meaning. He has made statements before and not followed through. What he is good at, is pacifying the naysayers — playing the nice guy, the family guy, the mentor, and the dedicated coach. Always some excuses, deflection of blame, vague speak about correcting flaws, getting players back from injury….
This is nothing new.
A no huddle offense? LOL He cant handle simple clock management at the end of a half.
Riley is stuck as a slave to his own ego. That is why he sticks with a too-complicated system. He cares more about appearing hugely skilled at complexities, than devising a system that fits the player quality that he actually has, like any really good coach would.
Like some are saying, until the attendence takes a hit, Riley is the coach. Focus on talking season ticket holders from re-upping.
What I don’t like is Riley doesn’t get yet that fans are pissed about his contract and how long and mind numbingly easy it is to keep having it extended. The bar was set piss ass low which maintains that as fine.
He was asked very pointedly about it by Canzano and Eggers. Canzano directly presented it as a problem. His answer made little sense as going beyond the 10 year base deal isn’t needed for recruuts to be sure you will be there. If there is a guy surely to stay it is the guy from the town who says “the grass isn’t always greener.”
Riley and his inner group know the heat is very high in the fanbase right now. I know a staffer who seems genuinely nervous, and they should be based off the frequent crappy performances in conference and vs ranked teams going on for a long while. The Eggers article said BDC wanted to give a relatively modest raise to Riley to go along with the base 10 year deal which is much more standard and would have been miles better.
Riley came up with the easy extension thing and cares not how ragingly unpopular it is. However, if you can see this rage at such contract it would be wiser to do something about it then fan the flames by continuing to act like being here through 2024 is what we all should just deal with and accept regardless if he never does better than 6-6 again.
He could easily have BDC rewrite it for a bit more yearly salary and the extensions entirely removed as going beyond the 2020 he is already out to seems to be unpopular by almost 85% of the base now. I say that because apologists and even media like Canzano and Gress seem to see the writing on the wall.
Without overtly saying it they are acting like Riley probably will be gone before then by retiring because of how fed up fans are and how ugly the situation is getting. I believe they are atleast internally acknowledging like most the fanbase has that Riley beyond a few more years would have more negatives than positives. This is just another example of Riley and BDC being very poor adapters. Similar thinking is happening on the field and the results keep getting worse.
It isn’t hard to see that this foolishly ill conceived contract is making many fans actually root for losses just to prevent extensions that push the ongoing farce even further out. A contract that puts fans in a position every year to debate whether they want more wins is madness. It is completely unacceptable for an AD to ever put a fan in that position. It is the definition of the most horrible management and foresight and BDC should be in jeapordy for it.
Wazzu game should be fascinating as with their QB out we are heavy favorites. A Riley loss would be the biggest example of the shit hitting the fan you can possibly imagine.
From the Gress comments I have seen, he seems totally fine if Riley retires soon. Like a lot of us I think he has seen enough of the constant same problems. He was saying stuff like hard to imagine much worse football.
He only has to win 5 games vs. FBS schools and one FCS team to add another year to rhe worst contract in college football (as long as the teams aren’t Sac St or EWU since they have our #). Basically beat the bottom dwellers in the conference and another year’s tacked on. Opie should have been fired last year after Baldwin spanked him at Reser. We’re the only Power 5 team paying $500K to an FCS team to come in and embarrass us AT HOME.
Good scientists/managers/teachers (Riley should be the 2nd and 3rd) do the work to make the complex simple for others so they can understand and execute.
Anybody who touts complexity over and over is usually trying to make themselves look smart and/or provide an excuse for why they’re not getting things done. See it in the work place all the time…
according 10 yahoo, OSU currently has the 57th best recruiting class in the nation, 8th in the Pc-12. 10 – 3 star guys, zero 4 or 5 star commits. Ya know, one would that that being in the Pac-12 you could get a few 4 star guys every year. Average ranking for OSU is 2.59. So in other words, guys that won’t be contributing for a few years. Ridiculous.
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/teamrank/2015/all/all
8th in the Pac when comparing total star points (quantity of players in class * average star rating. when you ignore class size and just look at the average, we’re tied for 10th/11th with Utah and just a sliver ahead of Colorado. Add another 2* guy to our class and we’d actually he 12th overall based on average star rating
We’ll be 11th or 12th in recruiting again this year. Opie will sum up the class as “OSU kind of guys” which basically means 2 stars with no other Power 5 offers. No wonder these guys commit immediately. It’s either a community college or the PAC 12… I’m also thinking some of the higher ranked guys commit elsewhere on LOI day. I mean c’mon, if you had some talent and saw our program you’d reconsider too. At least we have a family atmosphere.
I agree about the process. But I disagree about the quality of the recruits.
I believe we have players. I believe our boys are ballers. I thought so before the season. I still think so.
I wonder what the fuck they’ve been told to do that directs them from their missions.
Of course, we hear how their execution is everything wrong with our season.
I suppose this is where Kerry Eggers chimes in about how Mike Riley has never thrown his players under the bus for every god damn loss in the so very unpolished name of mis-execution?
And since 70% of a college coach’s job is getting recruits, why would we even talk about it?
I think we have some ballers too, just not enough. For every Poyer or V. Butler you “unearth” you have dozens that won’t see the field or contribute in any meaningful way. One of our corners this year wouldn’t start on any other team in the league and of course he was a 2 star without any other PAC offers… In fact, I believe we were his only D1 offer.
Candidly, we hear about this massive playbook and how difficult it is to grasp the system but… Do our plays really look that much more difficult than the competition? Even an armchair guy like me can predict the upcoming play and we certainly haven’t seen anything mind boggling in terms of innovation. If executing these difficult pro style plays is so challenging then dumb it down or recruit kids that can actually run it. And on D. We have to be the poorest tackling team in the PAC 12 and possibly the worst of all the Power 5 schools. Diving at legs, arm tackling, multiple ankle fractures from being juked out of their orange Nikes. How many years have we seen this shit? Excuses on top of more excuses.
Man, I love Tinkle’s candidness and vision. He addressed the crowd at the Fan Jam and said – paraphrasing a bit here – that you’ll see a different team, culture than in the past. You’ll get effort night in and night out and the wins will come. That’s the type of leader that I’ll support and if I were a player a coach I’d want to play for. Riley should be a career counselor, not a football coach. Total wuss.
Agreed.
It’s funny, while QBs struggle with the complexity, my brother’s wife, who did NOT grow up watching football, or even bothers it now, would say, “Right there! He’s open!” and “Why didn’t he throw it to that open receiver?!?”
Simplify Riley. Set your players up for success, not just yourself for excuses.
I’m going to get real petty…..I don’t like Riley’s demeanor on the sideline either. He walks slight hunched over and dresses in layers like it’s 12 degrees outside. I feel like getting him a wheel chair and a blanket and pushing him up and down the sideline! If you’ve lived in the Willamette Valley 50 degrees and sprinkles is not that cold! Present a tougher image, man!
… a nice, warm, padded Beaver costume!
No energy or passion whatsoever. Just looks down and chews on the cud. The pollys say he has an “inner fire” and that Tom Landry was also unemotional on the sidelines. WTF!? Attempting to compare a HOF coach vs a HOS coach (Hall of Shame or Shit, your choice) is pretty desperate. The players and the staff are a reflection of his personality. Until he’s gone nothing will change.
“No energy or passion whatsoever. Just looks down and chews on the cud.”
OH HOLY COW>>>pun… oh… who the hell cares?
This is just so dead on. It’s not even funny.
I know what you mean. Walking about slowly with his hands behind his back, kind of hunched over, sometimes with an inappropriate grin, he looks like a skinny OSKI. Ironically.
The Stanford game broadcast showed him a couple of times just standing there with his hands on his knees, bent forward like he was ready to ralph.
At least I wasn’t the only one!
I think Beaver Nation collectively wanted to hurl:) I’ve been riding the porcelain pony for about five ears watching Riley and his ineptness.
Really?
I just turned off the TV… or exited one of the gates… or sometimes just fell asleep.
Is ineptness a word?
Yup, a noun. “A lack of judgement, sense, foolishness. Synonym: See Mike Riley, Head Football Coach, Oregon State University.” Really, look it up on dictionary.com.
I don’t think it’s a word. I think the real word is ineptitude.
Ineptiosity.
We can study ineptology?
We’re entering the critical part of the season. 4 Wins in the books… to avoid another year of agony, we have ONE more win before the dreaded “clause” kicks in.
i noticed that Riley stands 20-25 yds back from the line of scrimmage. Always on the side of the opponent. Can’t imagine he can coach effectively from there…. oh, can’t really imagine he can coach effectively from anywhere…..
Does he even do any in game coaching? Most coaches would say something to Smith after his 30th false start (I don’t think my number is an exaggeration) but he let’s it slide. I’m sure her thinks Tavita Thompson will take care of it. BTW, why the hell is he coaching the TE’s to begin with? Mike Riley quote ” I love it when ex-players come back and help us out. It’s a really neat deal.”
SINCE WHEN HAS VISITING RECRUITS AND CLOSING THE DEAL BEEN A STRENGTH OF RILEY??!????LLOLOLOLOL….
Drunk Ducks never deviate.
Speak of the devil… Sounds like another scheduled visit has cancelled, and a few others have taken the Beavs off their list in recent weeks.
This team is gonna be dog shit for a while whether Riles is on the sidelines, in the booth, or hammered drunk staggering around with the rest of the dregs in Monroe or fucking Albany. He could ride his bike into the god damn long tom tomorrow and it would change anything!!!!!! SHIT!!!!!
BDC needs to STFU and GTFO. That SOB has this program so FUBAR its not even funny. Our identity is MIA and our players are in over their heads. Coaches don’t have to care because they can’t get fired. It’s like working for the government, but more wasteful.
Those sons of BITCHES sit back eating pastries and talking about it rather than going out, punching Sonny Dykes or Rich Rod in the God damn jaw and being about it.
Ducks are prettier when they don’t speak.
and take the raping. you do not question phil knight’s disciples
Need more acronyms to figure out so keep em coming! Haven’t heard FUBAR since I watched Saving Private Ryan.
FUBAR was passe by the time I enlisted in the early 90’s. PYHOOYA is relevant and will probably always stick around.
But if you ask a Marine, any acronym is good… especially if it means they can do Marine push-ups.
NO!
I stand against it all.
Those who are now in power are controlling the message as we speak. And they are unapologetic.
Kerry Eggers… I call you out specifically for your poor ethic in this one arena. I call you unprofessional and unethical right now. You have written the words which lead me to this conclusion, and they are public. Maybe you think your opinion or my opinion matters. They do not. But if you would like to have a discussion about either of our opinions I wouldn’t mind.
I have looked back over all I’ve written about all I’ve read.
Mr. Eggers, you have a lot to explain. What you leave in… well….
I guess you don’t “leave” much. I’m thinking people buy your well-worn excuses just because you write.
When you write lies or suggested lies, you are more than wrong. You are unethical.
Given his 50 year friendship with Riley doesn’t Pamplin and The Portland Tribune have some culpability by even letting Eggers cover the team? At minimum opinion pieces from Eggers concerning Riley should not be allowed. On the plus side, I’m don’t think that many people read that paper.
Eggers is usually just about the facts. That’s what pisses me off the most about this apology piece. Nothing he writes is fact. He’s apologizing for the lack of talent in every arena, including journalism.
When I’m looking for in game details I have relied on Eggers more than anybody else, but this is embarassing journalism…..it makes me think that Eggers might believe the situation is more serious than during the 5-7/ 3-9 seasons and a free fall is not going to be tolerated indefinitely by the administration.
I don’t know what this is. Eggers usually sticks with the facts. This unabashed apology piece is so far out there for him that it’s not even an outlier. It really pisses me off.
I had the opportunity to meet a parent of an offensive player on Saturday before the game. The family is going to sit down after the season is over and look at the pros and cons of said player transferring to another school. The reasons were concerning the direction the team is going. The kid wants more playing time and a chance to actually see the field in his position. I told his parent that we have been rooting for him all along to get that chance and we hope to see it before it’s too late.
Mr. Brown, I want you to stay.
That being said, I don’t see your needs being served in even a “whole team” concept.
I can’t tell you our coach will ever play you. I can tell you you we who know football know you are our best.
Hey… this is kinda tongue-in-cheek, but also makes sense… why not save your legs in college and burst onto the scene in the NFL? We’re all told a RB only has so many years. Why not take Coach Riley’s ignorance as a rest period?
Okay… I tried.
Brown showed his spark and higher gear on his nice TD run. He is a stud being mismanaged. If allowed to take more responsibilty on his shoulders he would increasingly shine. One of the most gifted athletes on the team. As far as I am concerned he should now get twice the touches as Woods and Ward. Riley throwing so damn much doesn’t make it easy for any back to keep it in high gear. If there was proper balance and Brown got 8 or 9 more carries a game we would see him start to make a statement. Pretty much can assume Riley will keep doing his same bullshit though.
Brown was offered by almost every team in the PAC so his talent isn’t a mystery. It’s amazing we actually got him. Same old loyalty crap from Opie instead of playing the best talent, although Woods has been pretty good this season when he gets the rock (the platooning with Ward is weird, another nice guy Riley decision). If it is indeed Brown that is thinking about transferring I certainly wouldn’t blame him if he did leave.
Will Hopkins
The Colorado coach may have gotten fined $10,000 for chasing after the referees, but a) he probably had a good reason, and b) his players took note and said it showed he cared. Colorado is up and coming.
WAZZU this weekend – Aliotii commended the replacement quarterback, thought he did well under the circumstances. I’m not counting on Halliday being out as a win for OSU.
Local media is cosseting Riley but outside media, not so much. I had background radio KXTG on yesterday and something called “studs and duds” came on which caused me to actually listen. Riley was a dud and cited for his screw-up of the civil war game last year, mismanagement of the Utah game this year, specifically. Noted that Mannion’s draft rating is plunging by the minute.
You have an interesting definition of ‘up and coming’.
You seen some of the renderings for their facility upgrades that are coming soon? Their Football Center looks pretty awesome inside. Much more wow factor than what OSU will do. We have no renderings because much of it is a weight room 3 times larger, new carpet and maybe a new hot tub. Nothing to really “wow” recruits with though.
new hot tub you say?????
https://screen.yahoo.com/james-browns-celebrity-hot-tub-000000926.html
I dont’ check the UO new much, but good god, a 6’7″ 295 lb HS defensive lineman commits?
I like how they happen to have a MLB WS player – and Hawaiin legend – at the game.
And another DE athletic freak may commit as well…
C’mon Cav, better get your O-lineman doing extra bear crawls going and “coach ’em up!” Ducks rush two, drop 9. Sack: OSU confusion on the read option…..
http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2014/11/canton_kaumatule_4-star_de_mee.html
you think Victorino got paid to go to the game? Maybe Riley can hire Carrot Top or some other D-list celebrity to come to OSU games and convince 1 and 2 star guys to commit.
It wasn’t a coincidence that Victorino was at the game. Phil Knight using his connections to impress the kids. Similar to when he brought Lebron, Carmello, Wade to the sidelines of a previous game.
http://solecollector.com/news/shane-victorino-is-interning-at-nike/
Yeah, it smells bad. Likes sneakers so much he committed to a one-day internship…immediately after a game where a top recruit from Hawaii happened to be visiting…Mahalo Phil Knight!
Wasn’t that a USC game where they brought in the NBA players?
Not sure how he’s not considered a booster. Yet he’s hanging with recruits on the sidelines. For a program under NCAA Probation, its a ballsy move, but they also know they’ll get away with it.
cash is king. and isn’t traceable
As S-I wrote about Kelly/Lyles (“Will,” not “Willie”): “Always pay in cash.”
Hilarious, they put that statement in over and over…UO had paid Lyles with a check.
so stupid they can’t even cheat right. The SEC is laughing
“Hit him at the knees!”
Signed,
Sark
OT– I hope he rises to the occasion.

The team is screwed next year when Nelson is gone. The corners are going to be slow and inexperienced. The lack of depth LB is also going to be bad. Is it worth looking at next year?
Disagree on these points,
Hunt should be fine to replace Nelson. Scott improving is the bigger question mark.
There’s plenty of depth at LB. Saulo, Mageo both have started and played extensively. If Songy makes it back, that’s three guys who have played a good amount of minutes. Noland Lewis can also come in and play LB if needed.
DE is where depth is lacking and no one making a case to start next year. Safety lacks some depth but that might end up addition by subtraction with Murphy and Zimmerman.
There are some promising young CBs, they’ll just be inexperienced. They may play “slow” in Banker’s “complex schemes,” but I don’t think the foot speed is lacking.
I think the current OLBs are underwhelming. The middle is sound, and there are some fast, promising OLBs that are true FR right now. I dont’ see this staff getting productive play out of them early.
Inexperienced QBs may be implementing an upgraded “read option” or “no huddle” offense….
There will be ugliness. Do not look.
Assuming Grimble is back at full speed, maybe Tago is working in, there’s a promising DT who will be a RFR….between the DTs, young OLBs, and young Cbs, there’s some physical talent and speed.
Some promising WRs,
But Riley et al won’t put it all together…
If Riley becomes an ambassador, will that make him a rambler?
Obscure car references.
We had an AMC Rambler. Dad had bubble wrap seat protectors. No AC of course.
What about paneling?
no but we made up for it with white walls.
Nice. But Clark Griswold does not approve
That’s right, he went for the Brady Bunch cruiser wagon anyway.
was listening to fox sports radio this evening while sitting at the DQ drive thru with my sons. They had their college football analyst on and talking about the ducks and if anyone could beat them these last few games. The host says what about Oregon State? It’s the civil war, right? CFB analyst says have you seen OSU play this year? Not a chance. Oregon State is awful this year. Hear that Riley and BDC? National talk says the beavers are awful! It’s like the little kid that covers his eyes and thinks you can’t see him.
Did you order the Neat Deal Meal Deal?
LMFAO! Good one!
So on a scale of 1 to 10 how well will the OSU Valley Football Center upgrades hold up to these at Colorado? (10 being equal)
http://footballscoop.com/archive-news/photos-colorado-s-new-facility-is-flat-out-impressive/
My guess is a 3 to 3.5. To me that means the Buffs slow climb but trending up will allow them to maintain a small gap on us until we ditch Riley. OSU’s decline is enough that I expect Riley will have the Beavs finishing last next year or 11th at best.
I’m scared to see what the beavs do with the valley football center. It will be the focal point of our stadium and I’m sure it will look like shit. Based on our new shitty logo and our tacky uniforms (that our 2 star recruits love), and the fact that BDC is making the decisions, I know it will be disappointing.
In off topic news, Oregon will become the next state to legalize dope. I can see the new dish commercial. Instead of “The Boz” saying take me with you back to college, it’ll be Cliff Harris. Everyone in the U of O athletic department is rejoicing this evening.
It’s about time. Now the legal system can go deal with real crimes.
Not to mention Eric Moreland. Maybe he would’ve styed another year.
and my father the duck says…………….
Well, we can’t have Colorado and Washington having a recruiting advantage over Oregon!
And the rich will get richer……………………….
Has any team/athletic dept been more negatively impacted by the tentacles of the Obama administration than our OSU Beavs?
Why aren’t we getting a subsidy or bailout from DC to help rebuild our image? Everybody else who whines seems to get whatever money they want.
To top level recruits, our athletic program is basically Ebola. Where’s our god damn treatment??!?? Why can’t we quarantine Banker or that mouth breathing mo fo BDC??!???????!?!?!?!?!??!
THANKS OBAMA, THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!!
Weak.
Toilet Paper isn’t know for it’s strength….
This is so Ducky and wrong on many levels. But I’ll concentrate on one. This appears to be the OSU logo for the school, not the AD. So there’s either a copyright infringement or it was approved by the school.

dumb ducks can’t even come up with their own ideas, just rape others. This was already done to them last year when they played Stanford
http://i.imgur.com/XJXzWeo.jpg
Pretty sure they can’t own letters. It’s just a normal font of the 3 letters.
Wilner gave the Bears a B+ for their effort against the Beavs, says, “Considered an A- for the effort, but the Beavers just aren’t good enough …”
We’re really in trouble now.
All the experts, journalists and former players are telling us we should appreciate that we have Riley and we’d be in big trouble if he were not here. I feel l really bad about being so critical of him now.
My apologies, Coach Riley,
Tim
Listening to JoeBeav show, sounds like Talkin’ Beavs will be a lot more of the same Riley promotion tonight.
Now it is, “we don’t have a nice airport and the town is not diverse enough” to attract the recruits we need. No mention of how that impacts repeated false starts, the lack of a two minute O, or the frequent (lately) inability to get the correct number of players on to field. sheesh!
Euhus would never talk about that stuff, no. Blind/mute. I never got any responses from my tweets to Jim Wilson about coaching accountability either. Blind/mute.
Neither does Pullman. What was it George Raveling said about Pullman? It’s not the end of the world but you can see it from there. Or something along those lines……………..
Gotta love this one from Fox’s Steward Mandell, who says “risks of firing Riley far outweigh the reward”
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/11/risk_of_firing_mike_riley_far.html
“Even if the school fired him and found a hot-shot replacement who promptly took Oregon State to the Rose Bowl, that guy would be gone faster than Jacquizz Rodgers in the open field.
I’d be ecstatic if the new coach took us to a Rose Bowl and would be blowing him kisses if he left for greener pastures. At least that would mean we had a window of success, and who knows, maybe his replacement would duplicate the feet. Is that better than having between 3 and 7 wins each year from here to eternity?
Players come for the coaches more than anything.
TWSS?
So recruiting has little to do with not having an airport or living in one of the most educated towns in the world or being hard to get to… down some winding dirt road with cows blocking traffic… or something like that?
Mandel admits another coach more likely to take OSU higher with that quip and bullshit about a new coach finding success and leaving. Like you said it would be amazing if a new coach could turn thungs around in just 3 years. More likely it takes 4 or 5 to be knocking on the door. If there is a breakthrough in year 5 or 6 that is a perfect story arc. If he stays for 2 or 3 more years fine. If he goes fine. No reason to overreact as we would be in solid position to get another very good coach to the Pac-12.
I like the Matt Wells idea. Ride him from age 43-50 is about perfect. If its a smashing success than maybe he stays to age 52. Don’t go past that. Recruits are more and more liking the confident younger coaches with the fire. 9 years is all anyone should get. Then get you next man and do it all over again. This starts to build a legacy of the program being most important and the coach secondary to this as it should be. After a couple of these successful passing of the torches the program will be far healthier than what we will see with a clinging and declining Riley who will have more losing seasons and find 6-6 and 7-5 to be his high end moving forward.
Pull the ripcord Beaver Nation. We are going to land much better than where this Riley descent into total irrelevance and contract madness is taking us. Football purgatory is here to stay until we make a HC change.
Mandel is playing the puppet. Riley is a good guy, so keep him no matter what.
The evidence of 5-7 years says there is far more danger in keeping him (as if he would ever, in fact, get fired). Riley for a very long time has ceased to even manage games with any competance, much less recruit quality players, or scheme for the talent on hand. He is just going thru the motions of coaching, coasting to his ultimate retirement. Other programs at dipshit college towns gain real success, so any location excuse is total bullshit.
Any scenario wont be worse than the skid we are in, and there is at least a decent chance of getting a coach who will ACTUALLY coach. And if we got lucky and one got us to a high tier bowl, and then jumped for a better job, the situation is then ripe for hiring another good one. The top teams fire coaches and dont immediately go in the toilet. Hell, RILEY jumped from the job and we got Erickson, so history says DO IT. Erickson jumped and we got RILEY when he could still coach.
The Athletic Department, school, boosters and fans need to demand a certain level of quality. Riley, with his obviously sloppy coaching, isnt giving that. I wouldnt speak about Riley needing to go if he would actually do a good job of coaching the guys he has, properly managing/coaching the games, and could inspire the players to play well and hard, every damn game. But he doesnt. He needs to go, its as simple as that. Roll the dice… Riley, now, is just an embarassment.
Are we embalming Riley and then his dead body will continue coaching the Beavers forever? If I’m to follow Mandel’s logic, we’re screwed one way or the other, Riley is not a young man. He’s either resigning, getting fired or retiring in my lifetime!
And when he goes apparently 0-12 seasons will follow indefinitely because Saint Mike can’t possibly be replaced by a mere mortal head coach. Sheesh!
OHHHH… EXXXXX… CUUUUUSSE!!!
NNNOOOOOO!!!!! EXXXXXXX!!!! CUUUUUUUSE!!!!
People!
These are just rehashes. Excuses will be made into perpetuity whether or not the excuse -makers have an audience.
We don’t need to be their audience. What they have to say is insulting to Oregon State and Corvallis. It has to be so for their “reasoning” to fit their fallacies. They slander the two with impunity and mention other issues (like an airport?) as if they have any relevance. But in their minds Corvallis and OSU suck, and only a bunker mentality makes their sucky little lies feel better.
Ignore them. Let them revel in their own filth. When they finally discover they need a shower and a clean start we can all line up with fire hoses. But until they’re tired of doing whatever it is they think they’re doing they’re not worth a spit in the ocean, and they deserve all the time and effort the real world has for their brand of whiny pathos… namely none.
But the people wanted a better Gateway Mall and we got it by golly!
OK, bad example.
and not only THAT…we still live in a democratic socie…
…oh never mind.
and by the way…celebrating the day not rocking the vote…I don’t think I’ll ever vote for a politician again (red OR blue) until they publicly profess in these exact words that “I’m not a self-absorbed, childish ass-wipe.”
So basically you want them to lie
you see my dilemma.
Actually Rouse Properties saw that even a favorable location and a successful anchor addition like Cabela’s wasn’t going to make the mall itself more favorable to the small, creative vendors who are the lifeblood of any mall. So they drove the remaining vendors up toward Sears and will finally put the necessary capital investments into their property in order to make it what it needs to be.
We’ll see if it does any good. The only thing I’m missing right now is the $1.50 theater. And Gamestop was the only store I ever went to because the one at VRC is always out of what I am ever looking for.
I once observed a man at the Gateway Mall food court take partially finished drinks off of tables and pour them into a container he was carrying. When he reached liquid capacity, he sit down two tables away from me and enjoyed his “beverage”.
I always wondered why the major mall entrance had a crappy food court in the middle of it.
There is/was a mall in Logan, UT set up the same way, kind of disorienting to be thrust immediately into the food court when you are just there to do some quick shopping.
Product placement is a well-known science. Milk and bread are at the back of the store, airport seats are straight and uncomfortable so you will go into a restaurant. Food courts are tempting as you pass to get to where you really need/want to go. Cosmetics and jewelry are first in a department store.
Food courts are tempting?
That’s new.
There’s nothing better than walking into an open public space and seeing people eating, looking up to stare at you with those vacant eyes that say, “Yeah… I made a conscious choice to eat this slop. Save me.”
1.50 = cryin’ shame
small shops = joke
I don’t understand the small shop quip. Are you saying small business is bad?
The ones that were there were continually bad, that’s why they got emptied out. Maybe new ones will be better.
They were just the typical mall fare… crap in, crap out. I haven’t been here long enough to know the place in its full glory. But I’m pretty sure there was a footlocker next to some vision center next to some jeweler next to some crap toy store… oh… and a hickory farms. There’s always a hickory farms.
The place was just run down and a weird lay-out… and slumming with anchors like Ross and Target and a trash dump like a Hometown Buffet.
Ya, remember, they got off to a fine start when the tiles they laid down in all the interior walk ways cracked. NASCAR trinket store across from Rest Home Buffet was another good ole store, yes. Lids was there for a while but moved to Valley River. Always thought that was better name for toilet seat store.
Had to look up Lids.
I guess it figures there’s a place in this town where you can buy any baseball-style cap you want… because the interwebs… they don’t exist.
They’ve been thriving in VRC for years though thanks to guys who like to wear their visors straight and leave their stickers on. Keepin’ it real yo. Oh and wearing green Yankees hats or whatevs.
Went back to the old site to find this:
https://angrybeavers.wordpress.com/2009/12/31/mindset-of-beaver-fans/
That was the high point for Riley. I was fully supportive of him because he drove the bus successfully up to that point… except for getting over the hump.
And then the wheels fell off the bus.
I also had to go find this one since people were talking about it:
https://angrybeavers.wordpress.com/2009/08/08/malcom-marable-commits-to-beavs/
And from the “that sucks” part of the day:
https://twitter.com/JesseSowaGT/status/530181425161445376
Especially for the kid
yeah I feel bad for him. Have they even figured out what happened or what’s wrong with him?
NM, I read the article on O Live. They said he had a heart attack. But still no idea what caused it or why. Luck O the Beavs. Fred Thompson and Earnest Killum come to my mind. Get well son. your life is more important than a game
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/11/oregon_state_beavers_deny_chai.html#incart_river
Riley has lucked out, having bottom feeder WSU as next opponent. He can quel a lot of the dissention with a win. Luck o the Beavs….
Think it would only quell things a tad since WSU using inexperienced backup QB. Sites like pure-orange will have some idiots thinking it may be okay to pull their heads out of the sand. However, OSU will likely suffer multiple blowouts before the season ends. That drop will then be quite extreme. Riley will be an embarrassment plenty of times to come this season. Have no doubt about that.
off topic………………..
Dirty Deeds and they’re Done Dirt Cheap!!!!!!!!!!
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/nov/06/acdc-drummer-phil-rudd-charged-with-attempting-to-procure-a
So rumor has it the Cougs and Leach have been holding some things back from the media. Apparently, their qb situation may not be as bad as it sounds. Halliday is out, but this coaching staff has a few twists they will throw at the Beavs.
As the week goes on, I see a perfect opportunity for a complete meltdown for the Beavs. Banker will find a way to make them look like playoff contenders.
I see an ugly, way to close win and hope Riley and the gang don’t coach another win away from these kids.
”don’t coach another win away from these kids.” Indeed – the fans, the game goers, the donors are miserable enough – imagine the players. Do they ever confront the coaches?
I noticed in an article about Halliday’s injury that he often changed plays at the line of scrimmage. Mannion is too dutiful.
“don’t coach another win away from these kids.”
Very well put! Could become a mantra for many who have been paying attention to this FB staff.
Guess the Beavers record since the Nike Nutria was adopted. It’s bad luck.
Uncle Phil…please bend over so I can put this mascot where it belongs.
Ahh yes, it’s Nike’s fault OSU wanted to rebrand.
Ha!
It actually is. But it’s not really their fault we ended up with what we got.
Ok, let’s see if we can take an unbiased look and see if OSU is truly hard to recruit to vs other PAC12 schools.
1. Location – Other than Pullman, every other school is near or in a large city in their state. It’s easy for other schools to beat up on OSU for location/weather.
2. Program Reputation – Based on my interactions with other PAC12 fans, OSU is regarded as a “little brother” program. No one actively roots against OSU other than UO fans.
3. Education – Stereotypes say OSU is a farm school, not elite. While the rankings are in the top 150, OSU still ranks in the bottom 3rd of the PAC12.
4. Pro Development – Many draft picks and players lasting in the NFL lately. Other schools can’t say much here.
5. Campus/town – One of the better looking campuses in the PAC12. Consistently top ranked college town. Diversity is still lacking (Mostly due to Oregon’s demographics).
6. Coaches Rep – Riley has a good rep as many can see with all the media defending him. Other coaches generally do not complain about him. Players love him and come back all the time.
7. Boosters – OSU does not have big time boosters or a large donor base. This is all predicated on the program health.
8. Facilities – Good but many other schools have fancier setups.
Is Corvallis hard to recruit to? When I take off my orange glasses, many schools have several built in advantages and OSU/WSU have the least. It’s very easy for other schools to paint Corvallis in a negative light because the program is not well known. The onus is on the coaches to overcome those disadvantages.
Is Riley the only person in the world, according to the media, who can do it? Absolutely not but it does take a different kind of person to succeed at OSU due to the natural disadvantages. The person would have to be the jack of all trades and master at all of them too. Winning obviously overcomes all of this. Baseball has proven that.
try selling what you do have. Not what you don’t. There are many things Corvallis can offer that the big city can’t. However most 18 year olds aren’t into that sort of thing. Makes the inner city kids harder to recruit imo. Just the way it is.
It all comes down to the coaches and the program. After watching OSU continually look uninspired and unprepared would you want to join the team?
1. Let’s be honest here. Being in a city (Eugene is not one, btw) is not the reason most kids go where they do if this point is to taken seriously. Being close to home is what drives them. And the larger population centers have more prospects, leading to more kids who grow up as fans, wanting to be hometown heroes.
2. Not much to say here. Our fan base propels this perception as do the fans of our younger sister school. One of the ways our fans do it is by making up BS reasons why Corvallis and OSU “naturally” suck.
3. Stereotypes… meh. Rankings are in the 60’s and 70’s and trending upward. We’re about middle of the pack (or Pac). But there are really no outliers below us beside Nikegon, who is trending nowhere on this front. Now, if you want to talk about rankings porn like USN&WR or Forbes and how that might shape stereotypes, have at it. But anyone who takes those seriously will have a hard time convincing me they ever graduated from high school, let alone college.
4. Other schools have NFL players, and some of them play at a high level on that highest of levels. Some of these players were no-stars and two stars also. This one bugs me. We’re a Pac program. Of course we’re going to get some NFL talent through here. Every Pac school does. And I highly dislike the notion that only OSU can foster kids into adulthood as if we’re the only ones who do. That’s pretty much what most schools in the country do. I’ll bash on the Ducks with the best of them. But I’m never going to say that the best of their best don’t line up with ours in terms of being quality adults and citizens of the world.
5. Yes… one of the most educated towns in the world and an incubator for entrepreneurship. Diversity is about 21%, and foreign enrollment is about 11% at the largest school in our state, total enrollment topping 30k this fall (with about 5k coming from the Bend campus and a very very highly rated online program). Diversity does somewhat reflect Oregon’s demographics since about 70% of our enrollment is made up of in-state students. But that also speaks to the school’s integrity while remaining true to its mission.
6. Riley has a good rep. Players come back. But prospects who would be better players never come in the first place, thus never get the chance to be some of those players who come back. This is a mindset adopted by the coach himself. It’s the old, “If I don’t try, I won’t fail,” attitude. I think it was you yourself who said above that most players come for the coach, which makes this list a little strange in and of itself. But you (if it was you) are dead on right about that one. It’s what we’ve been saying for years. The coach gets the players he wants. The players he wants are from the pond in which he chooses to fish.
7. This may or may not be true. Ed Ray has proven that boosters and corporate benefactors will step up to the plate if given a clear vision… and they are asked. Do we have a clear vision for our athletic department as a whole? Some programs (like hoops, baseball, gymnastics and T&F) have gone out and done the legwork on their own. So this one seems a bit disingenuous. The lack of an overall vision, lack of creativity from the man who heads the department, lack of effort and timely risk to follow through on plans created before that man came to power… all of it speaks to management, not boosters.
8. Fancier schmancier. Other than an incomplete west side and visitors needing to use Gill locker rooms (really… boo hoo), what is needed? I know what’s needed. They say a house is just a house. It’s the people who live in it that make it a home.
Corvallis is hard to recruit to for those who think Corvallis is hard to recruit to. That’s the bottom line. In fact, there is no other line. There may be individual analogies, but they may also be predicated on the person or people introducing them to Corvallis and OSU. When you start a sale with, “I know our town/program/weather/facilities/school suck/s, but…,” you kinda put yourself behind the curve immediately.
And the media is saying that Riley is the only person who can do what he’s doing. They’ve been saying it for years. Every time it comes up, there is no serious discussion. It’s either, “Who would they get?” or, “Pony up the cash for a buy-out.” Never mind the buy-out is borne of the same lack of vision in the first place and shouldn’t be something any fan or booster should be told to be responsible for.
This discussion is a little closer to the truth. But it’s still lacking. The truth is about product and performance. I had more fun watching Kragthorpe’s teams while I was in school because they always came out and gave it up on the field. But they were in a much more seriously disadvantaged position in terms of talent. And the final scores often reflected that. When I see the same, consistent poor play carried out by unprepared talent who are very much better than the OSU players of the 115 ship era… year after year after year… what am I supposed to think?
Or, we could dumb it down and just ask, “What the hell does an airport or diverse population have to do with an endless list of in game coaching failures?”
Way OT…

Yo dis DA game y’all! We best be smakin dese Cougs but they a hungry bunch. Gonna need our A game and need the best players like Mannion and Doctor to get up and do their thang!
I ain’t gone lie doh, dis Leach dude a little crazy and got nuttin to lose, he gone throw till dat qb arm breaks off y’all!!!
Anyone have a Duck-to-English translator?
B Fizzle be trippin
Dat be street speak from the windy city, as a lib you should know and respect diversity.
You got the -ity suffix correct. You can also add -itty to the list of words that might describe your mind.
What the fuck is it with Ducks?
Do I go on their sites and act like I’m just the most horrible and moronic stupid in the world? Or is it just in their DNA?
Why not Riley as AD? DeCarolis has Parkinsons, a degenerative disease. Is he going to stay on as AD as he degenerates, or is he looking to exit at some point? There’s a slot Riley could be kicked upstairs to.
Riley brought Jonathan Smith to Corvallis, and coached him his first 2 years, Erickson coached him his last 2 years, and brought him on as a grad assistant. Does anyone know if at any point Riley reached out to Smith with a job offer? If not, why not?
Because he’s mediocre, and it would end up hurting the entire department. His hires are poor. No vision.
Yeah. Riley might have inked Robinson to a lifetime deal with automatic extensions for a .333 record in league or better. He thought of the university crippling terms in his deal which also only require that for a league record or even less if we pick up a 13th game. Would never get rid of anyone so like BDC it has to be a train wreck before he does anything. Riley at this time is submediocre in everything. He needs to retire and Oregon State needs to move on to a much better, Riley free existence. That is only thing that will make a difference and allow OSU to be relevant.
My take on Riley is that he no longer really cares. So he doesnt put in the effort he once did. I would expect that to be the same if he were AD. Not good. Or maybe his brain has partly gone to mush….either way, you dont want him as AD.
AD rankings:
Riley < DeCarolis < a tub of butter
Who is “gosh darn” in the fantasy football league? I think you quit from what I can tell.
We need a new owner if anyone is interested.
He was making moves as late as last Sunday. Maybe just a procrastinator…
Oregon State should hire Chad Morris this offseason while he is still available. Many experts expect he will only be at Clemson as OC for one more year max. When a good job in a top conference comes calling he is gone. Similar story with their DC Brent Venables.
Buyout Riley, ask him to do it cheap since he is a nice guy, and grab Morris now. Better yet, spend some of that 1 billion campaign for OSU and have him bring Venables as DC. Say the vision is to win as many Civil Wars as Oregon and win multiple Pac-12 Championships. Those two will sell out Reser and have them centrally involved in plans to finish Reser and elevate the program to perennial Top 20.
All this is doable with vision. Dump BDC and get Massari seeing that yes OSU can be much more than it is under a rapidly deteriorating Riley led program that has half the fanbase tuned out, turned off or disgusted.
Yes to Massari, and I might even ask him about getting guys who have a fire lit under their ass and keeping that fire there if I get a chance to talk to him on campus. (And of course ask if he is on track to be the actual AD in some time.)
Get your hands out of that 1 billion though. That was for campus buildings, academic scholarships, hiring better faculty, better research equipment/funding. Football ain’t that important mane
Anyone have 2 adult and 1 kid ticket to the game this weekend for cheap? Or 3 adult would do as well?
Thanks
Mike Riley………Albatross.
mbb tonight – remember this from when WT was hired? Our gal Lindsay in SI : “located in an agricultural town that’s not known for diversity or accessibility.”
She can go screw herself and her, “Corvallis/OSU sucks,” attitude.
She hates Corvallis because it lacks voodoo doughnuts and gap fat store.
If I was standing in front of Voodoo, I would drive to Sandy and go to Joe’s if I felt like having a doughnut.
Or more than likely I’d just drive out 11th and go to Bob’s or Dizzy Dean’s… you know… actual good doughnut shops.
Besides, Corvallis doesn’t need a doughnut shop. Just drive over to Philomath and go to Nutcakes.
Cool video promoting the ladies BBall team. Kindof makes me actually want to watch some of their games, which is a first for me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4NlC2HRXyM&app=desktop
Usually it is hard to watch. I used to piss the little lady off when we would stumble upon a game on TV and tell her that within 45 seconds there would be a stumble, trip, or flop with one or more of the gals on the floor. She stopped getting mad when she realized it was generally a true proposition.
That being said, from 2001-04 , the U of Minn. had a player named Lindsay Whalen that was simply an awesome player and maybe one of the best passers I have ever seen. The women’s team became much more enjoyable to watch then the men’s team. They averaged close to 10k in attendance her senior year and went to the final four. We had given up our men’s tickets that year and went the women’s games instead. I hope the Lady Beav’s do great. Coach seems like the real deal, although somebody forgot to tell him that you can’t recruit to Corvallis. Go Beavs.
Andy Avgi. The te/ de that got away.
Linky for the hoops exhibition game:

Had Andiy Avgi stayed with OS, he would have been an NFL prospect DE or OT by the end of his third year.
He is a pretty good athlete. One could say that if he played football anywhere he would likely have been an NFL prospect… even at WOU. They can find NFL caliber TE’s in Monmouth.
The Beavs have 19 points at the half. Looks like this season will separate out the real Beavs from the pocket pussies.
Tinkle will make the team better as the year goes but it’s a bad team. Long season but that’s to be expected
puhleeze
Btw… what’s a pocket pussy?
I do not envy Wayne Tinkle this season. Lack of talent on this team is obvious. Only a few competent players on the team. Duvivier is the only player who do anything whatsoever off the dribble. Don’t think this team can actually score more than 55 in a game this season
The walk-ons look better than some of the scholarship players. That’s hilarious
I think Tinkle just decided right there that Reid will only see the court out of sheer desperation.
Maybe not. He’s still out there.
yeah
i thought so
Huh?
That’s pretty poor stuff… for someone who doesn’t know squat about hoops.
Wanna start pretending?
You just got called out by jack.
How can I correct this? I don’t want to be called out by anyone.
Oh… you’re not saying I called myself out. I get it.
WOU 54-45/2 min left. This season is gonna be similar to the 94 or 95 season when we went something like 4-23
Yeah, I think the year you mention, The Beavs lost to Montana-Billings, another D-2 school and unfortunately it was not an exhibition game, it counted.
21 turnovers and 10-22 FT’s. Ouch
Wondering about Devon Collier? Hooping in Israel. Mazel:
http://basketball.eurobasket.com/team/Israel/Hapoel_Kazrin/Galil_Elion/8459
He’s tearing it up at 25 points a game…..that website is interesting, Ricky Claitt was a Danish League superstar for a couple of years, not sure where he is now.
WOU wins, 57-50. Yikes! I know this was only an exhibition but from watch of it I did watch we have a lot of players who are not Pac-12 talent. I know Robaminson left the cupboard practically empty.
Scuse me, 57-47 final.
relax
FIRE WINKLE!!!!!
Why?
Did he bring a bunch of criminals and miscreants to the school and call them a hoops team?
And then did they just become what they were?
If current thought is accurate, the Quacks aren’t going to have a stellar year in hoops and given all the shit that has gone on, it could cost Altman his job.
Yeah… but Young alone will probably beat WOU tomorrow. It takes a plug nickle to play the high post in that swing offense when you have Young initiating the dribble entry option.
Young…another transfer…could make or break Altman’s U of O career.
He just better hope Max Tuerk never plays hoops.
Well, Lemoyne beat Syracuse in one of these exhibition games a couple of years back……….
Thank you Obama. Your bro in law was a real piece of work.
Yes, and thank you too, Santa… and the Easter Bunny… thank you.
Hoo boy!
“The crowd of 4,515 was larger than 12 of 17 home games in 2013-14.”

A lot of system install going on last night. D was decent. Rebounding was very good. People got a lot of their shots at their spots a count too late because the offense was a count behind… if some passes weren’t just outright taken because of it.
I’m not saying we’re going to be world beaters this year. But it just looks like a matter of the boys taking a punch before they realize they’re in a fight.
And does anyone else get immediately angry when they see Spitznagel or Brill on the floor?
I mean… besides Zony and UCLA and Stanford fans?
Wanker is racking his brain on how to keep Aunt Patty’s wounded Cougars in the game. Look for extra coaching emphasis on; off-sides, 12 men on the field, horse collar tackles and pass interference.
It will take a true team effort to lose to the walk-on lead Cougars, but the Beaver defense is up to the task!
The immobile Mannequin is good for at least five sacks and three interceptions.
That being said the Beavs will probably stumble into their fifth and last win of the year. At least its a reasonable kickoff time and good weather. Enjoy…JB
That’s just silly. Everyone knows PI isn’t called when the Wazzu offense is on the field.
Watched the Utah St game last night. Am convinced Matt Wells is a burgeoning star coach whose next 8 years are going to be on a steadily increasing and impressive upswing. Would be a great hire for OSU if Riley fails to finish this season with much and also is a loser next year as widely expected. Keep your eye on Wells.
Gina up with an analysis of third downs in the Cal/OSU game. One rush called in 11 attempts! Another example of the “coach away victories” mantra. Thanks to TP Beavs.
