I would actually admire MR more if he said….”fuck you all and fuck the spread offense….I’m getting too old for this bullshit…I plan on getting a good nights sleep and then bundling up in the morning and riding my bike around town while vigorously chewing my gum. At about noon, you will have my resignation. Oh and fuck Banker too.
Can’t wait till next year. It will be a battle to see how long it takes before they stop Del Rio from doing that thing with his legs when under pressure. He hasnt realized yet that when under pressure, youre supposed to chuck the ball as far out of bounds as possible, or throw to the most heavily covered receiver, or at the very least, tuck and roll….on the ground.
I was wondering if he wanted to raise his NFL prospect in that fashion, doing something that was clearly a no no to him last 5 years. Mannion won’t be a top draft, but will get a pro shot. Not being a draft is good for him, as he wont have to play first week in the league. So he will have a chance to fix his Rileyisms and adapt to playing with intelligence. I think he adapts well, and will further expose Riley, hopefully Riley will be gone before that can come to fruition.
Postgame video presser will have Riley grinning for some weird ass reason, sipping on his diet Pepsi and talking about how disappointed he is about not having a few extra weeks of practice by missing out on The Kinney Shoes Bowl. Of course he’ll repeat his weekly excuse of “We just didn’t come prepared to play football for some reason…” and that “We just didn’t execute but the kids are really conscientious and that’s a neat deal. I love the fact that the seniors got to chose tonight’s uni combination.”
After a few weeks and severe apathy from Beaver Nation DeCareless will send out an open letter of full and absolute support of Opie and his staff. Some scribe with balls will ask about staff changes and Barney will reply “I really like our staff… One of things that’s so important to me is staff continuity and cronyism. We’ve been here for so long that gives us a recruiting advantage for 2 star recruits that fit our system… And as you know there were unsubstantiated rumors that Banks would be jacked by Hawaii and that Cav was a finalist for the Okie St OL job so I’m really pleased we locked them up because they’re doing a bang up job.”
“Oh, by the way, I have no plans to retire nor do I envision our staff, scheme or coaching to change. We’ll look at tweaking some stuff but it’s really about execution and someday establishing an identity before the end of August… Lastly, Dee and my grandson love it here in No Accountabity Island, uh I mean OSU… We’re just so blessed to have all your support – as you may have heard a few minutes ago I just got a standing ovation while being interviewed by Preece. That’s even after the big turd I left on the Bike Helmet Beaver at midfield. Well, gotta go, my grandson needs a hug and Jay wants to know if we should have sumo wrestling for our next team event. Oh, almost forgot. For some reason we got a commitment from 4 star recruit. I hope he wasn’t confused as to which team we were. Hips hip…”
That’s high praise Angry. I was thinking about somehow resurrecting the Fire Mike Riley site. Anyone know what happened to that dude? He was a visionary.
Thanks again for having this site. In my book it’s the only realistic site out there.
I think I have his email. We’ve talked in the past. When was firemikeriley.com up? I started my campaign in 2006, tho the blog officially started in 2009. My first three years were spent getting banned over and over on blitz and having to come up with more and more bogus names.
I think firemikeriley.com was up and running around 2006-2007. Believe the guy was based in Salem. As another poster mentioned most of the Pollys have gone quiet over at PO. Majority are saying they’re done with Barney and the gang. I can’t think of a time when it’s been this bad, even Robinson’s last year at OS didn’t seem this toxic. A lot of people coming out of the woodwork and blasting away at Ray as well. I didn’t see the CR firing this year, especially after that weak ass open letter, but I seriously doubt changes will occur in football unless one of the younger assts bails.
We have got to start pouring letters to BDC telling him to fire Riley or look at an empty stadium and he will be the first to go! I hate them both!
Yesterday I watched a Beaver Defense that had checked out
I watched a team with a vision bitch slap a team coached by someone who has ZERO accountability
The AFLAC Duck has better clock management than MR
Help me out here. Help me get BDC’s email and let’s get people writing and get people pissed off. The time of excuses is over.
Look at the 2015 schedule and its hard to see many wins wiith a new QB, young OLBs, next year could be particularly brutal with wins over Weber State and San Jose State the most likely. Though i could see Riley/Banker blowing it against San Jose State:
Since McBride retired Weber St. is one of worst FCS teams, so that should be a blow out and probably get the Pollyanna’s hopes up. Michigan will be interesting with I’m guessing a new coach, but I would think they handle the Beavs at home.. San Jose St. is awful since MacIntire left for Colorado. CU, Wazzu and Cal are the only teams that would even be possible wins for the Beavs unless Riley somehow has another 2012 up his sleeve.
2015 is going to be brutal. The only wins I can see are Weber State and maybe SJS, but Beavs will go to the Big House and stare open mouthed as 102,000 people hate on them and they will lose 24-7. Then we will see how BAD this team is. The Defense this year is Senior heavy, and it is going to be a very ugly year. I see 3 wins tops. I could deal with that if they fired MR, but unless we do something to force De Careless we get what we pay for. I am so damn sick and tired of getting my ass handed to me in the Civil War. This kind of losing would not be tolerated in any other conference. Hell, Nebraska fired Pellini today and all he did was win 9 games every year. Granted, he was a whopping .333 in big games, but at least he was better than MR. We have got to start a fire and sweep out MR. Otherwise we are not going to win a Civil War for another 5-7 years. Pathetic
Somehow it needs to occur that there are no “sell-outs” and empty seats galore every home game. Only that will get the Riley albatross off our backs. Clearly BDC and Riley&Co have no shame.
I would like to think that Craig Robinson was fired because there was an expectation that he change something significantly and he refused. We are to the same spot with Riley.
Riley is in a spot to become great if he changes his focus from himself and his coaches to the program instead. He must have a new coaching staff in order to continue his career (if he is to be a person liked by anyone). If money is a problem, take $600,000 of your contract and direct it to assistant coaches (he’d still net $1,000,000). If I were thinking about my legacy as a great person in any career, these are the sorts of things I would embrace.
Basically, it is easy for Riley to be successful: have the balls to improve the program instead of being surrounded by ineffective coaches and in the box thinking.
I’m not sure CR was asked to change anything…..I think BDC took another look and asked himself…why am I retaining this guy?….attendance in freefall, underperforming team of his recruits and now new players transferring out. I guess he will have to ask the same question of Riley at some point, I don’t think he’s there yet.
Problem is that Football moves much slower than BBall. Only a few home games per year. So it’s important to correct problems ahead of such a drop, because such a drop is incredibly difficult to correct (28 years of empty stadiums ring a bell?)
BDC was told by “B.B.” and 3 other “big” money bball boosters that they were going to cut off donations to OSU if Robinson remained as coach. BDC took another “look” because of that. It was not of his own free will.
As per the article: “However, assuming Oregon State doesn’t pull an upset and get to 6 wins, this would be the 3rd season in 5 years in which Oregon State fails to reach bowl eligibility. It would be, by far, the worst 5 years of Oregon State football since the dark ages of the late 20th century. Futility for this length of time eliminates the possibility of an underwhelming recruiting class or two, and points to a more systematic failure.”
“systemic failure” is the key phrase there and probably the most frustrating part as no one in the media wants to acknowledge that Riley’s system is failing, therefore he is failing. You can’t separate the two.
It’s going to take becoming non-competitive in league play. This season, Riley can point to three games with 4th quarter leads to say they were still competitive. Everyone gets smoked by the Ducks, so it’s a unique benefit to Riley that losing so many times to his rival has not cost him his job. You have to think a Wazzu, CU or Cal type seasons of recent vintage to put Riley on the hot seat. Maybe that is next season?
I think that the fans and especially season ticket holders need to put a hard squeeze on BDC and tell him straight up: Change the coach or we will bail and then have the stones to do it. That is what finally happened at WSU and they had an almost completely empty stadium one year and then the message was received. We cannot afford to go any lower. We must get someone with a vision and with a fire that will not say “well golly we sure didn’t execute very well today”. I am not commenting on MR as a person, just his coaching skills. He has to go. #fireMikeRiley!
I loved Leach’s look just now as Huskies take a knee and then cross the field to shake hands. I swear Leach was thinking “I’ve still got one more time out a-holes”. Congrats to Chris Petersen on 100th win in 9seasons as a head coach. Huskies are good and getting better, heading quickly toward great. We head the opposite direction. Soon the bottom. Now where but up from there, right? Hip hip
So Brian Harsin makes 1.2 million at Boise St and apparently the admin has him on their list when ready to move on from Riley. I don’t see how Oregon State could possibly still want Riley on the sideline next year. 4/5 of the fanbase wants him out now and having that much negative opinion of his performance from the paying customers is very bad news for the health of the program but the reality of the situation from all his losing. Harsin seems like he would be have high interests in a Pac-12 coaching opening. Beavers need to cough up some to be done with Riley and offer Harsin 1.85 million a year with proper incentives for 8-9+ win seasons. Harsin has a steely sideline demeanor that makes Riley look like a spineless jellyfish in comparison.
I’d just about take anything over Riley at this point. Spineless ctnenophores is a start or even a tobacco shop figure – I’m not that picky.
Wells, Baldwin, Harsin, etc. all could do well in Corvallis. In fact the coach at Central Catholic, Jesuit or LO would probably be an upgrade. I’m confident that there are others posters that know more about the coaching landscape that can come up with a number of talented FBS/FCS HC’s and Coordinators that actually have a pulse.
Opie used the word loyalty in his post game presser which is code for aint nothin gonna happen with my cronies…or me for that matter.
If it’s the adult Punky Brewster I’m going with that! But I think a life size cut out of Dee Andros needs to be placed beside her just for some tradition.
You know. I would rather that they just place a cigar shop indian, or even a jellyfish on the sideline all next season instead of Riley and co. Because the indian/jellfish wouldnt have blind loyalty behind them, and so after next year(which is destined to be bad either way) we could see some positive change to rally the fanbase around. I would attend a coachless game next season, i will not attend riley and co games.
Next year I see no guarantees but Weber State. It could get horrific fast.
Maybe the only wildcard is someone like McMaryion…if he can actually run it could change things around. If he’s one of these guys like Katz or Moveao who are labeled runners yet never do, then yeah, who after Weber State can be penciled in as a win? They better schedule another cupcake for the open date.
The defense sucked ass this year, and I am actually happy to see a lot of those guys graduate (everyone other than Nelson).
I can’t put my finger on it, but I think there were some “bad eggs” on this team. The defense quit at times this year (and last year) and that’s on the coaching staff, but some players can rise above their coaching and be leaders also. I didn’t see much of that this season.
I don’t think it will make a big difference in the short term, but Banker does have to go. This was a bad team and Riley keeps talking about the offense, but the regression was with the defense. Banker has to be held accountable.
Yeah, I’m not sure the defense could get much worse and I thought players like Strong and Noland-Davis looked more energetic out there than most of the seniors. I don’t know if it was Banker’s schemes or player skill/intelligence/desire or a combination of both, but these guys were lackluster and didn’t improve as they aged through the system. Noteworthy, that the best player, Nelson was a juco.
Oh yeah, and here’s something else that was really pathetic:
I was at the game today working concessions, and from what I saw, it was at least 60:40 Ducks to Beaver fan ratio. I know it’s the Civil War, so there will always be a larger contingent of opposing team fans than usual, but to be outnumbered at your own stadium is downright pathetic.
Just goes to show the current sorry state of this program. Remove DeCareless, remove Riley, hire some new upcoming coach, and bring some hope back to the football program here.
Ran, I applaud you Man! Actually working at the game and on top of that having to deal with a ton of drunk ucks. Sorry, forgot to mention you having to listen to crickets whenever our offense/defense was on the field.
I’m preparing to deal with assholes that didn’t even go to hole bragging about their Natl Championship and having a Heisman winner to boot. I’ll admit it, I’m envious that they can attract fans from all over the country and in a lot of ways don’t blame them for jumping on the wagon. They play a “fun” brand of football and take no prisoners. Us? All of know that our program tastes like a shit sandwich. We should have Spinal Tap write us a new fight song.
I just look at both bball programs as a perfect example of what new leadership can do to revitalize a tired and apathetic fan base (completely legit reasons btw). The biggest thing is that there’s absolutely no hope for football unless you’re a completely delusional, loser poilywag. And the excuse of comparing hoops/baseball to football is an “apples to oranges comparison” just doesn’t fly with me. Barney has 85 scholarships, just like everyone else in our conference. Just imagine what a coach/leader like Casey, Rueck or my new bud Tinks could do… Win with a 21st century offense and defense and a lot of the recruiting challenges go away. Win and Raising Reser III gets kick started. I could go on and on but I’ll just depress myself even more. Talk about FUBAR management in the president’s office and Gill.
this coaching staff reminds me of the movie ‘Water Boy’….The head coach cowering behind a towel in the locker room asking the players, “Does anybody got any bright ideas?!” Apathy and forgetting what it’s like to coach. That’s what this comes down to.
“Edible”???? Someone is going to eat Peko? Finally this gets interesting. I guess the team needs to get some use out of him at this point. He should be able to feed several players!
Peko might be smarter than we know. Perhaps he was flubbing the whole thing because he didn’t want to play on this crappy team. Now that he’s eligible (or even edible) I’d laugh if he transferred out. Would his time on the practice team make him sit out for a year?
What “our friend Goe” has to say about the debacle. I read this and feel like it’s more of a “Captain Obvious” column at this point. Grow some balls Goe and call someone out specifically if you think change is needed. Time has long passed for this generic bullshit.
Notice he uses the phrase “system failure”. He’s either reading Angry Beavs or the Pacific Takes article.
Tonight was a fitting end to another shitty season. Got the shit beat out of them by a top 10 program that just screams how far behind the beavs have fallen. If that or 7 straight losses in a rivalry game doesn’t scream for change I don’t know what does. Some of us are sick of the mediocrity. Thank god there is no shitwhompers.com bowl game in podunk wherever rewarding this shitty coaching staff with another year of the inevitable. BDC has a choice. Bite a shit sandwich and fire the entire glut or eat a shit sandwich with the fan base. You’re move baldy. I’m sure you’re just shakin in your boots over this decision.
I just watched this video of Riley postgame where he was asked to talk about being uncompetitive and the future of the program. I know he said a bunch of words, but it sure didnt add up to him saying anything at all.
It sounds like he was tossed a bunch of softball questions…… I like how he tries to make it sound ok that the defense gives up big plays because they played well on other downs. Losing one on one battles….that’s football. WTF???? I think from the moment the kicker puts the ball in air to start the game, “that’s football”, Mike. Losing EVERY one on one battle is called “shit”.
It’s subtle, but Riley is protecting Banker. He ignores the mid-season collapse of the defense. I think his “master plan” for next year is to try to outscore other teams, with a few mobile QB wrinkles added.. With most of the offense returning, he thinks that will be the strength. Who knows, every other goddamn team seems to tear the Beavs apart with an inexperienced QB, maybe the Beavs can have the same for a game or two.
what I noticed in the game last night was these points:
1) When Mariota ran for his 20+ yard scramble for a TD, bad angles, players at the line giving up on play once Mariota ran by them, and too much of trying to strip the ball.
2) Del Rio can scramble and has a faster release than Mannion.
3) guys gave up on field goal tries and just played patty cake with the Uck lineman rather than trying to go after the block.
4) I hate the Ucks for going for it on 4th and 1 and Mariota throwing for another TD to go up 47-17
5) We need more players like Seumalo, but “we can’t/won’t recruit them unless they show very high interest where we’re in their top 3-5 school choices…that’s how Riley recruits…he doesn’t try to steal recruits from other programs like Washington and Washington St. Especially Wash. St.!!!
padding the stats just to improve his numbers is the most classless act a team can do…that’s what you do in video games, not in real life….right?! Strikes a nerve to me.
Riley will not resign. BDC will not fire Riley. Ed Ray will not fire BDC. OSU football will not improve. “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
Now that he’s not an employee of Nebraska, just wait a bit for the boosters there to start telling some of the stories and confirming some of the rumors about him.
Let’s just say he got himself fired a couple years ago with the rant about the fans and boosters being idiots. And that was not the only time he did that kind of thing… among many other things.
My point was more along the lines of some programs being willing to fire a coach WITH a good record; the AD at OSU is happy with losing records 3 of 5 years.
Va Tech fanbase is up in arms with Frank “special teams genious” Beamer. Apparently a 6-3 loss in OT to Wake Forest is a long slide from the VIck NC runner up team. They’re still bowl eligible this year.
The Pollys, AD, Ray, et al, are all content to watch this turd circle the bowl heading down; the only thing I can figure, the circular motion has a hypnotic effect on some.
Dear Mark….. thanks for not dropping 70 on me last night. I will survive the 28 point loss, by golly, gosh, gee whizz, jimminy crickets that happens all the time. A 50 point loss might have made the administration actually notice what’s going on.
Yours in coaching. MR
PS: If your’e looking to unload any deadwood I’m always on the lookout…
Did anyone ever stop to think the loyalty comment might be directed at any coaches within his program who might be showing discontent or might not be a great fit?
I know… it’s more likely that Riley and OSU and the Pollyannas all go into their weird faux-offended bunker mentalities instead… lashing out at straw men and conflating reasonable people with some who would rather call for a coaching change with EVERY SINGLE POST, doing so in a classless, offensive, inefficient and uninformed way.
But maybe… just maybe… Garrett is like he has been everywhere else in his career… inefficient and abrasive. My wait and see period is over with him. Apparently you can not hype attention to detail until it becomes reality. You must actually have it first. Go figure.
My bold prediction:
Garrett is gone… and I get my Leipold. And in three years after 8, 10 and 12 wins… Riley retires amid all the Pollyannas saying shit like, “I told you so,” and, “Oh… who can we get now that there’s nobody we can get who is as good as who we had?”
So Banker will take over, and Leipold will get hired at Nikegon where Helfrich couldn’t win without Mariota. Leipold will go on to coach in 15 Civil Wars, including the three he was an assistant under Riley… winning them all.
Pollyannas will spend 10 years saying we can’t get anyone better than Banker.
Yup, I think Riley knows some of his staff are ready to jump ship. Least likely to leave of their own accord are Perry, Banker, Read, Cav. Good comment about Garrett and his “attention to detail”, big disappointment.
The young three B’s are the coaches who I expect are looking for an exit.
And, part of the “loyalty” schtick was directed at any polly’s who are (finally!) wavering.
Riley is smart he won’t resign, that protects his coaching staff and family.
Media/people should be asking how much Riley will make in PERS once he does retire. It won’t be as much as Bellotti’s but it will be around 4k a month. Then guys like Banker and Cav will get the same thing. Riley has a grandson to think about a daughter who may want to stay at home and raise his kids. Add a ten million buyout and his PERS goes up significantly. He could buy several house in San Antonio for Jovan and his family to live on. The rest of the coaching staff won’t get jobs after this stint so they need a steady income too.
Loyalty is only about the family, and OSU isn’t family it’s just an employer.
Bellotti gets slightly over 41k per month. State of Oregon included his supplemented salary from Nike -AND- his actual UO contract, for the purpose of his PERS compensation. That’s how the taxpayers got screwed.
The “Golden Parachute” pension schedule was eliminated from PERS and Riley is NOT under the same schedule that is paying out to Bellotti.
Reading between the lines, it looks like Khylan Thomas may be the new commit. Linebacker flipping from ASU. Also, his message about the future looming good is a little encouraging since it is coupled with a picture of all of last nights visitors.
Khaylan Thomas is a stud linebacker. Hits like a truck. It would be nice to get lucas Alston and potoae along with Thomas. That would be at least a little bit of good news from the weekend
Hey that’s great but who will be throwing him the ball?? Del Rio? Did you see him play? His feet are more happy than the movie and he has a gun arm but zero accuracy. He was lofting the ball all over the place 3 feet over the receivers heads in the spring game. With zero pressure. Believe me, Alabama was ecstatic to see him leave so that they could give away his scholarship to another 5 star commit. This new commit will be talent wasted with Riley.
Why when they went for it on 4th and a foot and handed off to a RB (twice) to get stuffed short, did they not ever consider having Mannion go for it? He’s 6’5’/227, big enough to move it forward a foot. Or is the QB sneak not in Mike Riley’s playbook?
Another problem with both the 3rd down play and the 4th down play was that Mannion ran the play clock down to under 2 seconds before the ball was snapped. UO had it easy timing that snap count for the DL line surge.
In fact, on one of them at about :10 on the play clock, a D player jumped off-side… and Mannion stood up to audible while he stepped back onside… then he ran the clock to less than :01 before the snap.
OSU did that several times this year where the opposing defense was completely out of position and OSU could have snapped the ball… but waited for the defense to line up. Very sporting and gentlemanly of OSU.
I saw that too. Pretty damn easy to get off the line quick when you know exactly when the ball is being snapped. Just wish we could have shown more creativity in the play calling when we’re in those situations. The run plays seemed so obvious, a friend of mine called both plays before they were run, and he is among the least knowledgeable friends I have when it comes to football.
and that injury didn’t look very good for Grimble, & I have some serious concerns about our line play next year.
Our guys were consistently getting pushed back and/or on their asses last night, & I thought we were supposed to have some beasts there this year! Whatever happened to that god damn Peko kid? Kuli part 2???
All Mannion had to do is walk up, tap the center for the ball, nobody else move, and Mannion follows the center forward for 1 foot+. Nobody else move.
But this would only work if you don’t take the play clock down to 1 second.
Mannion actually rolled out and ran pretty well a few times last night. Beyond that he needed the internal clock to just throw it away. I know Riley has some slow-developing plays he likes (don’t call me Mr. Obvious please) double WR moves for example, but throw the damn thing away Sean. I’ve always been impressed how early in his career Russel Wilson understood that.
I don’t think he completed a single pass on the roll outs though. The timing did not look good and the receivers could not get open. I think he’s actually a little more mobile then we think, but he also had that knee injury.
The lack of completions on those plays could be partially a function of using rollouts so rarely. “Hey, I know. It’s our last game of the season. Why don’t we….”
I know it shouldn’t be difficult, Riley et al have an unique ability to make the simple look complicated.

Wow, sad news out of tOSU. Walk-on player who had been missing was found dead in a dumpster. Appears to have shot himself. Had written text to his mom prior saying his concussion had him messed up and not thinking right.
Even Canzano was tweeting that OSU “must know” that it needs to make big changes, but changes under Riley since it would take ~$12 million to buyout his contract. Honestly, I will be surprised even if position coaches are replaced and stunned if Riley replaces any coordinators.
And why should he? He is riding a horse he owns. Until all the Pollyannas really turn against him, and the stadium is half full, he has nothing to fear. Its pretty clear that he is indeed taking that contract as it stands, and has no shame at all. We have to hope he somehow, somewhere, finds a conscience…
Mike Riley’s response to the fans…this sounds like a losing attitude and a coach that is ok with up and down seasons. I’d take no Pelini at this point over mike Riley! At least bo knows how to clock manage and recruit top talent! Imagine what he could do with recruiting in a state closer to California!?
On his message to fans after the disappointing season and 2-12 Pac-12 record dating back to 2013:
“We’re always in the process of change and growth. We feel real good about the players in our program and in the recruiting that’s going on, some of it to fill immediate needs and some of it for development purposes with freshmen. This is always a long-term plan for us. And then the other thing is that if you stay in it long enough, you’re gonna experience some good years and some bad years. We have always been able to recognize what we need to do, and in the course of time, get better. It wasn’t long ago that we were 3-9 and went 9-3 (the next year). So we’re kind of motivated by the fact that we’ve got some good people here in the program and (are) looking to add more good people and through a good evaluation and a good course set, we’ll be better the next go around.”
Just because it’s hard to imagine BDC really putting any pressure on Riley, I’m guessing MR might get next year to have a solid, bowl eligible season without having to make drastic coaching changes. I would be shocked if Banker is let go. I’m thinking BDC is gone well before Riley and then maybe things get interesting.
Maybe all Ed Ray asks the new AD in interview is ‘will you please fire Riley, BDC wouldn’t and I couldn’t fire him because of ADA issues.- so will you please Fire Riley?’
LOL at the “growth” reference. Its been headed down the hill for some years now. That 9-3 season is clearly an anomaly … probably the players took it on themselves to generate it. So a statement like the above is just spin doctoring.
Just watched Canzano on TV…..said Riley is “unfireable” due to his 12 million dollar buy out, but he said that MR created this mess and he needs to fix it immediately. Interestingly, Canzano also said that Riley needs to fire his OC and should fire his DC. He did not mention them by name. Maybe there is something to the Garrett not being a good fit train of thought and it does look like Riley is again protecting Banker.
I’m a student and I was a Duck fan growing up so what’s the story with Banker? Like why is he continually allowed to be him and have his schemes when the OSU defense has really not been that strong throughout his 12 years as DC, especially the last 2-3 years?
You guys are right; style of play is outdated, and the coaches are preceding the program which is bad. It’s gonna happen when the history before the current coach was complete trash but still, there’s gotta be someone else who wants to play under the big lights of the Pac.
People talk about another coach coming in and using OSU as a springboard. Fine by me. There’s only about 7-8 destination jobs in the country imo (Texas, LSU, UF, Bama, USC, tOSU, maybe UO, ND, UM?) and Corvallis will NEVER harbor one of those. Not even my expectation. At that point, coaches are coming in and trying to establish a culture of success so they can use it as a resume booster. At that point, coaches can come from within. That sets up a constant cycle of quality coaching.
2. Your last paragraph should be pasted into a response to every kneejerk (especially Lindsay Schnell’s) comment of “but, but, but an up-and-coming coach won’t stay.”
Good – better than a coach who has overstayed his welcome and exhausted his competence.
To everyone who reads this blog: tomorrow afternoon between 12 PM and 2 PM Pacific time is the Joe Beaver Show that feeds directly out of Corvallis with Mike Parker and Jon Warren (both are very nice guys when you talk to them, by the way).
I want all of you who are voicing complaints here on this board to have the stones to call in and reiterate it on the air. The station can be heard on either http://www.kejoam.com or on the TuneIn Radio app (search Joe Radio under Corvallis, OR).
The number is 541-497-5356.
I wish I was able to call in and voice my own complaints during this time, but unfortunately I have a day job and I need to make back the money I spent on season tickets and two awful road trips this year. Maybe I’ll shoot off later this week. But tomorrow is when they reserve time for most of the callers and I want our voices to be heard… ALL of them!

Well… you know… we’ll… we can maybe take a look at who we have… who we might be… you know… working with when we… when… if we decide after… you know… after we evaluate everything from the football end… end of things. You know… uh…we had a skilled quarterback, and we will have a different…uh… different quarterback who maybe… you know… who might do things differently… uh… not quite the same… and we’ll evaluate how… uh… where… where we can evaluate working with different things from a… you know… evaluation of football standpoint.
If OSU is so strapped for cash, how can we afford to pay a dedicated special teams coach more than a quarter-million?
I’ll start by helping you guys out a little.
Since he’s a coach and mentor to his ST players, a good of his skill is that he has had no issues with his group from a personal or off-field standpoint. Graduating productive young men is the first priority. It’s a testament to his abilities as a coach that he doesn’t have any issues with his players.
He is so good that we have had several ST plays this year where we only needed 10 players. I think there was one on Saturday where we only had nine. Now THAT is some damn fine coaching! I question the hubris of this kind of play. But you can’t deny his confidence in his group is unsurpassed by any other coach I’ve ever seen if he will just put 10 or less players on the field.
They’ve done so if they think OSU can’t afford this or that. You can’t separate that claim from our football program spending that kind of money on a special teams coach.
$350k is a colossal waste of money for Bruce Read, yet it would take ~30 years of paying Bruce Read’s salary to equal Riley’s buyout. These are not equivalent numbers.
If Riley were in Catch-22 his name would be “General General.” Some changes to occur in 2015…what they are is wide open. Surprise.
There’s this disappointing clarity however:
“Riley’s contract runs through 2021. Does he want to coach until then?
“I do,” he said. “I have no intention of not coaching. I’m more excited that ever. I feel better than ever. I have a strong belief I’m the right guy for Oregon State. I know what we have to do.”
Riley won’t talk specifics, but he could make one or more changes to his staff. He said he will address the possibility in the coming weeks.”
That is the confident statement of a coach who knows he is contract and fiscally secure despite mediocrity, and is basically laughing in fans faces. He clearly has no shame or conscience. I guarantee he wouldnt talk like that if his contract were up for renewal. I think less and less of him as a person.
You should be ashamed of yourself. We all get that you’ve known the guy for years but this is a pitiful and lame attempt to shield your high school bud from another embarrassing season. You’re no different than Mike “No Accountabilty” Riley. How many times are you going to loft nerf ball questions and not follow up on lame answers? “Riley doesn’t want to big specific…!?” What a joke! He doesn’t want to be specific because he doesn’t have the answers. Be a true journalist Mr. Eggers and DO YOUR JOB! Frankly, having you continue to write puff pieces on Coach Teflon is what I consider a conflict of interest and your editor should reassign you ans find someone “less vested” in this CYA lovefest. And comparing how The Tide and LSU still utilize pro style to the mess he’s put us in proves to me he’s delusional and completely out of touch with Beaver Nation. The rest of his coach speak is too painful and idiotic to mention. He needs to be shown the door along with all of his coordinators.
’87 OSU Grad and Offshore Season Ticket Holder since ’99
Riley does not look excited or like he feels good. That may be the most dishonest statement in the article, with “I know what we have to do” a close second.
I’m sure he believes he’s the right guy, and that’s part of the problem. And BDCs problem.
He could be the right guy if he was willing to make some tough personnel decisions… or correct ones when those opportunities arrive. Based on that parameter, he is not.
“Many Oregon State fans have risen up against coach Mike Riley after a seventh consecutive loss to Oregon, which ensured a third losing season in five years. His once-secure status is now precarious. “
Now that the college football season is over, what can we look forward to?
Do we have any predictions about what will actually happen with Riley’s “evaluations” in the off-season? I know I have several wants. But what odds do we have that any of those wants come to fruition?
Volleyball made the tourney, in case you missed that. So the two bottom-feeders in the Pac last year had a major upswing after years of trending toward that bottom. This is a surprise, a welcome one, but a surprise nonetheless.
Hoops is pretty much a throw-away season in terms of expectations. I still think there’s a lot of inexperienced talent on the team which should come together as they gain more confidence. But there aren’t enough pieces to pretend that we would compete for the top three in the conference if all was clicking. Although, after Zony there are no sure bets in our league right now the way some of them play from game to game.
Women’s hoops should be good. I can’t wait to see the game @ Tennessee. That might tell us a ton about this team.
Any of us could put together fake pass interference/ I have been mugged football videos. Any one of us could put together a video of punter dives as well. We could also splice clips of fat lineman sucking oxygen on the bench after getting completely gassed by participating in three consecutive plays. How about splicing a video of all teams standing around for four minutes at a time during each and every tv time out? I guess in Mike Riley’s case he is macho since he does not believe in calling time outs.
I know… and the no-huddle was so controversial that Marv Levy got it banned for the AFC Championship game… then battered everyone else with it for many years afterward.
Football is not a thinking man’s game. It also is not a game for “athletes.” It’s a brute force exhibit where specialists can make a difference if given space.
And, to be honest, the NFL would never allow such a video to be created because they’re just such real men that they can’t take that kind of criticism.
Oh… sorry. Let’s call it copyright infringement and a control of the marketing of their product… because real men can’t be bothered with exhibits of their failures like those wusses in those fake sports where they’re open and honest with the public and immensely more popular than those virile boys who wear a bunch of protective equipment… because they’re men.
And… you go take a full speed running header into the ground just for the effect and a hopeful call. I think some of them are funny. But more than half of that video is people being tripped or kicked in the lower leg while they’re in a full sprint.
In the NFL someone would be first flagged then banned from the game for doing the same thing.
No. Marv Levy battered everyone with the no huddle except the Cowboys, Giants, and Redskins in their 4 losing Superbowls.
I’m a Levy honk as I’ve stated before, but to me full credit for the no huddle goes to Sam Wyche. In Levy’s autobiography he does too.
Levy got the no-huddle banned for that one AFC Championship game against the Bengals. That’s what is so funny about it all. He got the NFL to officially ban a method of play for one game then used it himself for many years after that.
Silly me. Here I thought they got pounded into oblivion… for the fourth year in a row… with each year being worse than the last… until this anomaly of a year.
Or maybe a certain coach woke up and did something for his job security?
I’m sure 10 year extensions with guarantees are on the way for both him and Taras.
That could be it as well. Linus should be fired, he completely lost the team after last season with many players either quitting or transferring–one senior and two juniors on the team–had to play way too many freshman to compete this year. The men’s team finally got a healthy Khirty Shelton–Pac 12 payer of the year–for an entire season, only double-double player in the country about to be a top pick in the draft.
Next year will be interesting for Simmons and the men’s team because they do lose some quality seniors, but they had some really good freshman this year as well, including the freshman of the year.
OT, but look at the numbers Arizona’s LB has put up; ridiculous. From S-I’s article on the top candidates:
“Scooby Wright III, LB Arizona
The top defensive candidate for the Heisman, Wright tallied 13 tackles, five tackles for loss and two sacks in Saturday’s 42-35 win against Arizona State. On the year Wright has 139 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and a program-record six forced fumbles. If he plays a big role in pressuring Marcus Mariota in the Pac-12 title game, Wright could reach New York.”
Wishing to hang out in a girl’s locker room may (still?) be your ultimate goal, but I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. I think there are two realities at play:
1. I’m pretty sure it’s been tried… by at least one boy in every class in every high school in the history of man.
2. Yeah… because teenage boys who declare themselves transgender (which is visibly evident btw) get to “hang out” in the girls locker room… and not get teased about being something unknown or different… or strung on a barbed wire fence and have gasoline poured on them while “kids” toss burning cigarettes at them. There’s not a lot that can go wrong with your method for wanting to hang in out in the girls locker room there Porky.
Below was a question posed to Riley by Gina Mizell of The Oregonian. She tried to be specific about the collapse of the defense and his response was “what do you mean”….Riley just will not take specific accountablity for anything!
“In the past two games, the Beavers have given up touchdowns of 29, 77, 23, 27, 54, 68, 36 and 68 yards. I asked Mike Riley after the game why the Beavers weren’t able to get those types of costly defensive miscues corrected by the end of the season, and he asked me what I meant. I followed by saying defensive breakdowns had consistently popped up throughout the second half, and Riley said it’s hard to generalize play-to-play troubles because different things can go wrong on different snaps. That’s true, but it was a trend — the most surprising one of the season.”
That sounds like Riley’s best years which we only see 1 year kut of 6 or 7 now. These days Riley is fortunate to get even two Pac-12 wins out of his last 14 conference games.
So sad that Oregon State has settled for no standards at all. Who is accountable for this dog turd product? I heard Riley say every play would be statistically analyzed by a computer but he made it sound like it was all individual assessment of merits of each play with zero consideration for the sum of the parts.
How else could you possibly explain Riley throwing on 63% of plays and only running on 37%. Computers would say that is a major bust but he did it on average 9 games out of 10. Arizona State was only game we ran as often with a 35-35 play mix of run/pass and strangely we beat a good team.
Riley has been doing his pass happy thing for 5 years to mass losses. He likes watching throws in practice I guess. Point is his computer comment was a joke as Riley is learning nothing and always reverts to what actually causes a lot more losing.
It’s a really simple summation algorithm. It’s barely worthy of being called “computer.”
It actually takes more time to code the plays in a game than it would take a decent coder to write an alpha. In fact, coding each of the plays in order to make them variables would be more effort than just tallying them by hand. The array is just so tiny as to make one wonder why it all has to be plugged into a pooter.
But I guess if it didn’t happen we would all be screaming about how we didn’t take advantage of silly stuff that doesn’t matter… or tartan end zones or something.
All right… I actually read your first paragraph. That was my fault. But let’s take a look at this one post of yours. I’ve been critical of many of your posts in a cynical way before now. But let’s justtake a look at what you’re saying here.
1. The title of the article has everything to do with everything but nothing to do with football. I don’t know if it was intended, but it was true in one way. Consider the words, “… we will do so with class, integrity, sportsmanship and with a commitment to our student-athletes.” Ooooh! Kinda tough to do that when Bo Pelini is your coach. Oh! I guess that’s the point.
2. Just because the first paragraph was silly and based on a poor headline doesn’t mean this might not be right. But it is. We’re not witnessing any big games anymore, and if Riley was fortunate to win two of 14 we wouldn’t have any issues with him. Think about that for a second. Okay… take a good week or so to figure it out.
3. I think you have a decent premise here which is more than negated by your obvious and offensive bias.
4. Ummm… your numbers are off. Your grammar is poor. Again, I get what you’re saying. But you really really suck at saying it. And because you suck so bad, you give a every straw man out there a spine. But then maybe that’s your intention?
5. And that last paragraph is pretty much the sum of stupid. It’s pure sheeple crap.
I don’t and have never been against your message, your ideas or you personally. But I am 170% against your “methods” of spamming and idiocy saturation. You make a mockery of right thinking, and you do do it without fail. You yourself are the uncompromising hack of this Beaver world… and many others beyond when I see comment sections spammed by you. You bore me. You offend yourself. I’m sure your mother is a very nice lady.
Jack, not to pick nits, but did you follow the link to the article?

“The people of Nebraska deserve not only high standards and expectations, but they deserve seeing our people and our teams reach them,” Eichorst said at a Sunday press conference. “I indicated during my introductory press conference that we will compete for Big Ten and national championships, and we will do so with class, integrity, sportsmanship and with a commitment to our student-athletes. I believe the action taken today is in line with that vision.”
Eichorst said the decision came after a full evaluation, but one thing stuck out: Nebraska’s struggles in big games.
ESPN’s Max Olson pointed out that Pelini went 26-25 against teams that finished with a winning record and 40-2 against teams that finished .500 or worse. In their past four games against Wisconsin, the Huskers were outscored 204-102
“At the end of the day, I didn’t see enough improvement in areas that were important for us to move forward to play championship-caliber football,” Eichorst said. “We just, for whatever reason, weren’t good enough in the games that mattered, against championship-caliber opponents. I didn’t see that changing.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Sounds to me like, while it may have been about more than football, it was framed entirely around the football team’s performance on the field.
Again, not saying Pellini’s not an asshole, and there may be other problems, like lack of booster support for said asshole, the fact remains, the AD considered the expectations of the program, competing for conference titles etc and Pellini’s record sub-par performance.
Honestly, if Nebraska had a conference title or shot at ‘the natty,’ do you think the AD kicks Bo to the curb?
The person (people) that put this out are paid good money to dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s. There can be no hint whatsoever that the former employer is disparaging toward its former employee with those high-money stakes.
Checked the podcast for today… The segment with my call got cut out, but pretty much everything else is there. Granted the podcast archive is often times wonky, but hmmmmm
It’s because you returned Mike Parker’s question to you;
“…but what about Brandon Cooks being so successful in the NFL, and Brandon specifically says that it was playing in Mike Riley’s system that prepared him for the NFL?”
with
“…do we want to be an NFL player factory or a winning college football program?”
I cheered because you hit the nail on the head but more importantly you got it out over the airwaves. Hopefully someone thinks….. hmmmmm. What IS more important to me?
You did a great job. hope I got your quotes right, or at least the meaning of what you said.
It was good, and it should be preserved by any purported news or information service as a tale of freedom and diversity. You did well (it was the only call I heard… but you did well). Selective and historical editing only gives the world a Texas School Board view of things. And that doesn’t raise even semi-intelligent kids.
if you ARE a winning college football program, you WILL put players in the NFL. It’s because you recruited then coached up a capable athlete for 4-5 years making him a better player.
Also, if we’re so great at the NFL thing, why isn’t that reflected in the recruiting rankings? You’d think it’d be a huge selling point for the program.
Mariota isn’t the reason we only scored 3 points in a half
We lose because we have outdated complex schemes being pushed by dinosaur coaches who recruit talent athletically inferior to the competition (though they are good guys)
Like my job (software dev), coaches need to stay current in the field or become obsolete. Riley and crew didn’t forget how to coach, but they haven’t kept their skills modern.
Parker asked about the how do OSU players have success in the NFL, and they attribute it to OSU coaching. I replied that the question is do we want to be an NFL factory or be a successful college football program? And the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Oh and the first thing was that Riley is done. He’s physically there, but as evidenced by the hunching over, hands on his knees like he was going to puke every time they showed him in the Stanford game, and judging by various interviews… He’s done.
Not according to him. Didn’t the Eggers column say that Riley thinks that he, Riley, is the best person for the program? I’m never sure what can be referred to as chutzpah, but it seems to me that might do it.
Riley isn’t going – he’s probably paid no attention to any of this – Dee told him not to. Ed Ray and BDC hold the reins – I think reigns would work here too. Forgive me 4 carrying this further: Unless someone cuts the former or removes a crown or two . . . not a chance Riley is done.
Remember Riley also had a Groza award winner and a Biletnikoff award winner on a 5-6 team. That could just mean the team could not score TD’s in the red zone and had an accurate kicker and that they passed a lot with only one really good go to receiver.
Neither Serna or Hass really made the NFL, so I just think it’s a smokescreen argument from Parker. It deflects from analzying a winning program or an inconsistent mediocore program.
Good job, scotty. I think the theme of “player factory for the NFL vs winning college FB” should be further explored with Parker today and hope others will join me in trying to do so.
Dave is sort of the flagbearer for the critics. He goes to most of the games (including away games) and called in regularly during the season. He’s an older dude and called it early on this would be a bad season.
That’s what I’ve been saying for months now…regarding Sean Mannion, we keep recruiting NFL QBs, but it is not OSU’s job to groom clipboard holders at the next level. Give me a great college QB instead of a backup NFL QB any day.
Are you serious that they edited your segment? Is this normal? I am tempted to write a post about it and then call Parker out on twitter, but I need more facts.
I don’t assume intent there. The podcast archive has always been super-spotty. For example, they sometimes mix hour 2 with hour 2 from the prior week, and early cutoffs of segments are common. Technical ddifficulties most likely, IMO
Not sure if I didn’t post this correctly the first time, so apologies if this is a double post. Been reading rumors that Brayden Kearsley plans to transfer from BYU to OSU?
I was impressed at how hard Storm Woods ran this year. Last year he seemed to have become tentative, which I attributed to the concussion (understandable if you’ve ever had one or more). He had some nice runs against UO, showing patience and efficient movement. His long TD run against ASU showed decent speed, and his 35-yard run against them may have been the most impressive run of his career(?).
I never thought of him as pro material, though some here suggested he is. He ran hard this year, took care of the ball, showed decent – not great – speed, and catches the ball well. His YPC looks very good and he doesn’t have a lot of mileage on his legs.
I suggest he go pro this year with fresh legs, high YPC, and make the best of it. I wouldn’t recommend he come back with an offense that typically sputters with a new QB and may suffer some awkward schematic “tweaks.” There’s probably the counter-argument he comes back as the clear starter and gets lots of carries to put up better total yards/tds, but there’s the injury risk as well.
Anybody else think he ought to go pro this year? I don’t know what other RBs will go pro, and there are some RBs putting up crazy numbers this year. RBs don’t have the value they once did and I know he wouldn’t be a high pick; definitely a late-rounder or maybe even be FA.
And on cue, Riley says OSU may go away from rotating RBs. No commitment though.
OLIve’s Mizell asks if Woods ’14 CW performance was a preview of 2015:
“Did that serve as a bit of a preview of Woods’ role in 2015?
“I think we’ll have good depth there,” coach Mike Riley said of the running back group coming back. ” … But it could, in a way, change back to where we’re not a series-to-series rotation like we did with Storm and Terron. I won’t commit to any of that at this time.”
It used to be if you were the man at RB, you’d get all the carries. That was a huge selling point to RBs. Neither Woods nor Ward distinguished themselves as #1 backs, unlike Quizz or Jackson or Bernard or even Wright.
Woods will be better next year just because of improved oline play. They played better this year and without their best lineman. He should not go pro. Wouldn’t get picked and probably wouldn’t make it to training camp.
What makes you think next year will have improved oline play? We were supposed to have stellar QB play this year with a 5th yr, record setting qb. I dont think it is wise to project any improvements for next year. Riley, for instance, will be a year older and another year more disinterested.
Seumalo was present THIS year. If a guy is prone to injuries, they keep happening. So his being around does you no good. I really think it all depends on how much the coaches apply themselves. And we are not getting much of that in recent years.
Woods and Ward ave over 5 yds a carry ….with a record setting passing QB and the threat of his passing game. That qb is gone.
In the past Opie rode one back and rarely did the 2nd stringer get a touch but the past two years it’s been 1a 1b. Some of it had to do with Woods’ injury last year but I think this year it was a “loyalty” thing with Ward. Neither back could get much of a rythym.
I always thought Ward was the better of the two backs. Going to miss him. Kind of. We just haven’t had that bruiser in the backfield since Quizz left. It used to be we always had one. Simonton. Then Steven Jackson. Then Yvenson Bernard. Then Quizz. I’m sure I forgot a couple but c’mon. However I believe it all starts with the 5 guys up front. Offensive line has been poor for years now.
Sounds like the team voted on it and decided that’s what they wanted to wear, then they had to seek permission from the Ducks to make sure they would wear home uni’s.
Have to say, they did look nice on TV, but strange to concede the home jerseys to the visiting team.
I think both the black helmets and orange helmets make the beavers look generic, which is appropriate given Riley’s identity crisis.
I’d like to see the orange beaver logo on the black helmet – as Beaverblazer applies it on black – with the helmet stripes narrowed. Not sure what to do with the orange helmet – “OSU?” in re-beaved font?
It says something about the players not much liking most of the uniform combos, that given the choice, they choose AWAY team unis rather than any of the home combos. Not a good sign, I would think…
I keep seeing references to Mike Riley hiring new assistants or coordinators…. How does that work, exactly? Riley subcontracts all the staff under him? Or does the university pay all his staff? Why is it that Riley alone dictates who the staff is? Why cant the university demand staff changes?
I realize that even if the university pays his staff, they would allow him to choose them, but if the university is unhappy with the situation, fire a few assistants and if Riley doesnt like it, he can quit…
I think the university can hire or fire staff – as someone on AB said earlier – anyone with a contract. I believe I read that BDC said, during the CR episode, that he doesn’t interfere with assistant contracts. ER doesn’t seem to interfere with anything.
So this is an angle the school could pursue! Start telling Riley he will need a new ______, as they intend to fire the current one. Might get him moving, either to think about retirement or getting better staff….
Could that be the solution to the Riley contract? The university shuts down football, Riley is bye bye… Then a year later the U reconsiders and dicides to take up football again. Gee, guess we need to hire a coach….
Actually it’s more the reason why i hate the ducks and SEC. And there needs to be some sort of NCAA reform on how much $$$ you can spend. Otherwise this is going to happen again.
It took them that long to lose 13 games?!? Riley did it in the last two years.
And where’s the “quality losses?” Not one FCS team on the list?!?
BSU, USC, Stanford, and UA all won in Eugene too.
For some reason, Stanford can scheme and play disciplined D against UO, but Banker/Beavers cannot…one would think Banker has the most familiarity and motivation.
Poor kid, three years behind Del Rio……,but wait 6’5, skinny, not very mobile…maybe it’s Del Rio who should be nervous….Ryan Katz part deux is on the horizon.
Seems to have an elongated, slow release, and odd way of stepping into many of his throws. The way he steps into them is odd given his height, he shouldn’t need to do that(?).
What do you think of his film Jack?
Based on limited showing, I was not impressed with Del Rio, but I think SilverStream saw some good things in practice. Maye Del Rio needs to settle down in game time.
And so it begins again….”OSU doesn’t rebuild. They just Rebeav.”
Speaking of ReBeaving… had a girlfriend once who went in for a surgical procedure after an episiotomy, I asked the doc to throw in 4-5 more stitches. He responds with, “…a potato sack only takes 3 stitches!” Exactly.
I like his attitude, and the fact that he’s recruiting well-rated talent to OSU.
But based on his height, release, pocket passing, I see Riley falling in love with him and there goes the integration of QB mobility into the offense and alleged offensive diversity.
Will the recent allegations against the UVA frat guys turn out to be another Duke lacrosse case? The Washington Post has concerns about Rolling Stone’s vetting process.
And the crowd roars. Ticket sales up for Wayne’s World:
“The idea was basic: Lower prices offered incentive to watch what figured to be a trying 2014-15 season. Then build off that when a much-lauded 2015 recruiting class arrives next year.”
Hell, even the Univ of Buffalo in the MAC has higher expectations than OSU for it’s football program. Poor Jeff Quinn sacked after a 5-6 season, a year after taking the Buffalos to a seldom reached minor bowl game. As mentioned earlier, UB got a steal with Lance Leipold, but still it shows the bizarro world set up that is Beav football, 28 year losing streak or not.
From blitz: Beavers finish 5-7 on the year. 2-12 Pac-12 record in last 14. No bowl 3 of last 5 years. 7 straight losses to Oregon. #notpretty
That’s not a neat deal…
God I hope so. Oregon State needs a complete and total overhaul of its program. Otherwise this sad slide to the bottom of FBS gets even worse.
Overhaul? Football program needs an enema
Any live links to the post game?
But but but… 28 year losing streak…
Mike Riley, “starts Tomorrow to fix things, going to due a lot of evaluating”
whatever… with a little w
It is bitterly ironic, that it is you dear Mike who needs the evaluation.
He said the same thing last year.
To be fair, he replaced the OC last year, he just replaced him with the wrong guy.
Mike Riley Evaluation List:
1. Spearmint or cinnamon?
2. Increase number of hip hip hoorays in victory?
3. Consider finally wearing a helmet on bike
4. Another Woodstocks promo?
5. Merits of punting versus a field goal attempt on 4th and inches
6. Mark: Great DC or Greatest DC Ever?
7. Coaching Summit w/Craig Robinson
8. Hip hip hooray!
He’d be a legend.
IMMORTAL
Can’t wait till next year. It will be a battle to see how long it takes before they stop Del Rio from doing that thing with his legs when under pressure. He hasnt realized yet that when under pressure, youre supposed to chuck the ball as far out of bounds as possible, or throw to the most heavily covered receiver, or at the very least, tuck and roll….on the ground.
Did you notice mannion actually used his legs tonight, must have figured there was nothing Riley could do about it
I was wondering if he wanted to raise his NFL prospect in that fashion, doing something that was clearly a no no to him last 5 years.
I look forward to next year and the Beavers winning 3 games and apologists saying how he’ll “Turn it around” “It’s just a down year”
Postgame video presser will have Riley grinning for some weird ass reason, sipping on his diet Pepsi and talking about how disappointed he is about not having a few extra weeks of practice by missing out on The Kinney Shoes Bowl.
Hips hip…”
That was enjoyable. I’d read your blog.
There is a “fire Mike Riley” facebook page, but it doesn’t look like it gets much use.
Banned by Blitz!? Wow…
AFLAC Duck! Too funny.
Look at the 2015 schedule and its hard to see many wins wiith a new QB, young OLBs, next year could be particularly brutal with wins over Weber State and San Jose State the most likely. Though i could see Riley/Banker blowing it against San Jose State:
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/09/oregon_state_beavers_2015_foot.html
Its possible OSU could go unvictoried in Pac play next year.
Very probable.
No, we’ll beat Michigan and all will be well in beaver nation for another couple years.
A pitiful situation…
Welp, unless we have a major groundswell, ALA the Craig Robinson situation, Mike Riley probably coaches here until he dies.
Oh well, at least we have Wayne Tinkle’s excellent coaching to keep us warm.
I don’t think this article has been posted here. It is from early November, but I think it’s a realistic assessment of Riley.
http://www.pacifictakes.com/pac-12-football/2014/11/6/7168703/mike-riley-and-oregon-state-no-longer-a-love-story
So what in your mind will it take for the OSU administration to realize a change needs to be made?
a) a winless season?
b) Less than 20k season ticket holders next year?
c) Angrybeavs.com Picket line in front of Truax center
d) Other
d) A new OSU administration
e) Other
It’s going to take becoming non-competitive in league play.
Hip hip
horrific
What was it that Jim Boutin’s manager said in “Ball Four”?
Oh, yeah, “shitfuck”, or was it “fuckshit”!
Heh, heh; Riley looks that way in comparison to the last cigar store indian (oops……native American) I saw!
Loyalty=no freewill changes to staff.
Second code breaker of the night for AB’s; and dead on again!
I think a cardboard cutout of punky brewster would do a better job at this point.
I’m more partial to Blossom
Zimmerman. Gone. Thank fucking god
Remember, he’s presumably better than the guy behind him :-x
Presumed by an inept coaching staff. Hard to figure things out in bizarro world
Current schedule shows no open date.
My bad. I mistook the bye.
Bankers outdated scheme has his defense standing on their heels trying to decipher their complex roles as the opponent runs past at full speed.
Wait, Weber State is a guarantee? With Riley? Not so fast, my friend, as Corso likes to say.
Man this sucks!
Spinal Tap? How about someone just play TAPS
Maybe they can play that as the playbook gets slowly lowered into the ground
this coaching staff reminds me of the movie ‘Water Boy’….The head coach cowering behind a towel in the locker room asking the players, “Does anybody got any bright ideas?!” Apathy and forgetting what it’s like to coach. That’s what this comes down to.
Henry Winkler is pretty articulate, he might do a better job than Riley.
One of the best scenes.
Riley messes it up and writes down inches instead of feet and the play book is the size of an iPhone.
…. a thin, spineless playbook…
Absolutely not true, I attended the game and it was absolutely not 60:40 ducks.
Maybe the ducks were just the ones buying up all the grub
If I was there I’d be too sick to eat
I think they landed one of the 4 star commits.
Peko finally passed his class and is now edible for the bowl game that we aren’t going to.
“Edible”???? Someone is going to eat Peko? Finally this gets interesting. I guess the team needs to get some use out of him at this point. He should be able to feed several players!
LOL. Damn auto correct.
Lettuce is no longer with the team so he is unavailable to toss Peko’s salad
Peko might be smarter than we know. Perhaps he was flubbing the whole thing because he didn’t want to play on this crappy team. Now that he’s eligible (or even edible) I’d laugh if he transferred out. Would his time on the practice team make him sit out for a year?
Peko won’t transfer. He has one year of eligibility left and next year is it for him.
He’s either reading Angry Beavs or the Pacific Takes article.
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/11/goe_something_has_to_change_be.html
Dude. Stop reading Goe. He has more knowledge about brain surgery than OSU football.
Unfortunately, Goe along with Canzano are the voices of the Portland media and have the most influence.
Thinking I’m gonna call into the show Monday and just let it rip (no profanity of course.)
Do it!
I just watched this video of Riley postgame where he was asked to talk about being uncompetitive and the future of the program. I know he said a bunch of words, but it sure didnt add up to him saying anything at all.
http://www.csnnw.com/video_content_type/riley-evaluating-team-moving-forward
Riley has always harped on two things: 1) continuity within a program and 2) having a Sr QB is very important in this league.
Beavs had both of these and look how it turned out. I think the game has changed rendering the attributes relatively meaningless.
Personally, I think OSU is in for several losing seasons which is probably stating the obvious.
With all that said, “Go Cats!”
what I noticed in the game last night was these points:
St.!!!
I like #3, when was the last time a Beaver team blocked a FG or a punt? Couldn’t the program lose Read and save some money?
padding the stats just to improve his numbers is the most classless act a team can do…that’s what you do in video games, not in real life….right?! Strikes a nerve to me.
No problem with number 4. It was still *technically* a game, and if we don’t like it, stop it and all that
“Loyalty. ”
What does that mean?
Loyalty to the players, the program, the school, the fans? Or…
Loyalty to your friends/coaches who are obviously in over their heads?
Time will tell, sadly we already know the answer.
Riley had “loyalty” to his pocket book when he left for the Chargers.
Here’s the link of the 4-Star Defensive End commit the Beavs picked up over the weekend.
http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2014/11/benning_potoae_4-star_defensiv.html#incart_river
Did he actually commit or just visit?
Riley will not resign. BDC will not fire Riley. Ed Ray will not fire BDC. OSU football will not improve. “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
I am rocking back and forth and sucking my thumb in a corner, but I’ll be ok tomorrow, it’s just a stupid sport.
Agreed.

Bo Pelini is available
Now that he’s not an employee of Nebraska, just wait a bit for the boosters there to start telling some of the stories and confirming some of the rumors about him.
Let’s just say he got himself fired a couple years ago with the rant about the fans and boosters being idiots. And that was not the only time he did that kind of thing… among many other things.
Yup, Pelini was fired for being the biggest asshole in college football, it had nothing to do with wins and losses.
I’m not saying he’s not an asshole.
TO: Mark Helfrich
FROM: Mike RIley
“Dear Mr.Fantasy” is one of my favorite Traffic songs!
… until… the twelfth… of never
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r58GQYFZeLE
Yup, I think Riley knows some of his staff are ready to jump ship. Least likely to leave of their own accord are Perry, Banker, Read, Cav. Good comment about Garrett and his “attention to detail”, big disappointment.
The young three B’s are the coaches who I expect are looking for an exit.
And, part of the “loyalty” schtick was directed at any polly’s who are (finally!) wavering.
I don’t see anyone leaving on their own accord.
Brasfield should, he’s about the only one whose players played worth a shit.
I mean 40k a month? Didn’t Bellotti get like half a million a year from PERS?
Bellotti gets slightly over 41k per month. State of Oregon included his supplemented salary from Nike -AND- his actual UO contract, for the purpose of his PERS compensation. That’s how the taxpayers got screwed.
The “Golden Parachute” pension schedule was eliminated from PERS and Riley is NOT under the same schedule that is paying out to Bellotti.
Oh thank goodness!
Reading between the lines, it looks like Khylan Thomas may be the new commit. Linebacker flipping from ASU. Also, his message about the future looming good is a little encouraging since it is coupled with a picture of all of last nights visitors.
RememberTheName ?7? (@ThatManK7) tweeted at 11:17 AM on Sun, Nov 30, 2014:
The future? Looks good http://t.co/FdsdHw1rFV

That’s actually encouraging. If they could get 2 of the 3 between Lucas, Alston, Potoa’e it would he huge.
Khaylan Thomas is a stud linebacker. Hits like a truck. It would be nice to get lucas Alston and potoae along with Thomas. That would be at least a little bit of good news from the weekend
Should be interesting to see how Riley wastes them and never wins more than 7 games
No confirmation on Thomas. Hasn’t flipped per other site but open to OSU which basically means nothing. I think he goes to ASU.
Alston supposedly committed. 4 * WR. The Lakewood DE didn’t commit either. I see him going to UW.
Where did you read about Alston?
Sounds like Blitz has some visit recaps if anybody has access to it
Nevermind, just saw this re: Alston. Looks like you had good info
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/242215-109426-beavers-get-verbal-from-four-star-receiver
Who’s going to throw him the ball?
The quarterback, probably
Hey that’s great but who will be throwing him the ball?? Del Rio? Did you see him play? His feet are more happy than the movie and he has a gun arm but zero accuracy. He was lofting the ball all over the place 3 feet over the receivers heads in the spring game. With zero pressure. Believe me, Alabama was ecstatic to see him leave so that they could give away his scholarship to another 5 star commit. This new commit will be talent wasted with Riley.
Neat trick… giving away a scholarship that a walk-on had.
Someone else noticed!
That was a common problem with many plays.
Fullback off the right guard would’ve worked, tailback into the left guard never works. And giving away the timing is just BAD FOOTBALL
Apparently not. Just stupid!
Apparently, you do not have an understanding of Mike Riley’s “complex pro style” system. This simplistic idea you put forth is simply not possible!
Remmers just got a false start for the Panthers LOL.

I will miss Faux Pelini.
Wow, sad news out of tOSU. Walk-on player who had been missing was found dead in a dumpster. Appears to have shot himself. Had written text to his mom prior saying his concussion had him messed up and not thinking right.
http://abcnews.go.com/US/body-missing-osu-athlete-found-campus-police/story?id=27265552
Wow
(all I can say really)
1. Dee Riley and Mrs. Banker are bffs.
For the few of you that might not be aware, there is a no profanity rule. Forgot to include that.
I remember when Jack called in and went instant pollyanna hahaha (jk sort of ;) )
You can’t swear on a show called “Joe Beaver”? What’s the world coming to?

Does this mean Albert is out?
“It is not because the truth is too difficult to see that we make mistakes… we make mistakes because the easiest and most comfortable course for us is to seek insight where it accords with our emotions – especially selfish ones.”

Wow man. That’s some deep shit. Cool.
Jack’s always in deep shit…
Hey!
Keep your hands off my shit!
What’s everyone think about setting up a comedy kickstarter venture to raise the 12m to fire Mike Riley?
Stretch Goals:
$13 million: New chainsaw dance choreography
$14 million: Get a flash mob to boot The Duck out of the stadium next Civil War
$50 million: Hire Jim Harbaugh/Jon Gruden/etc.
(ok ok, seriously not sure I like the idea though haha)
Hey Jack: Leipold just took the job in Buffalo. so he’s in Division 1 now, just not the right town. I wonder if you can recruit to Buffalo?
Yeah… I know. He’s gone. His niece tweeted it out early yesterday.
His answer about the challenges and differences in moving from DIII to DI:
“It’s still football.”
Aunt Patty aka Mike Leach unloads two defensive staffers at WSU…. D coordinator and linebackers. Are you listening Mikey???? JB
Dave in Tumwater just about hit it on the head on the show.
Question to any or all Pollyannas out there:
Has anybody actually said that they think Bruce Read is worth the money? Even the most optimistic fan thinks he’s a waste.
Phone lines are slammed!
Nice job Scott!
Thanks :)
I concur. I was on hold but after Bruce and Scott I ran out of time and they both nailed it. Great job!
Unfortunately, I blew my secret identity as “scotty” :p
Yes… you are now known to the world… Scott.
He said he will address the possibility in the coming weeks.”
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/242227-106958-mike-riley-has-points-to-make?utm_source=New+Media&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PortlandTribune+%28Portland+Tribune%29
That is the confident statement of a coach who knows he is contract and fiscally secure despite mediocrity, and is basically laughing in fans faces. He clearly has no shame or conscience. I guarantee he wouldnt talk like that if his contract were up for renewal. I think less and less of him as a person.
not many comments posted to this article, however. I think Eggers needs a blast to his Riley love.
My feedback to Eggers:
Mr. Eggers,
You should be ashamed of yourself.
’87 OSU Grad and Offshore Season Ticket Holder since ’99
Offshore?
I’m guessing you live on the rock?
Whatever that’s supposed to mean… Split my time between Asia and the States.
Oh my god. Riley mentioned Peko and thinks he will play LOL. Does he still believe in the Easter Bunny.
Of course he believes in the Easter bunny! I mean someone has to be laying all those eggs in Reser, and it couldn’t be him or his staff, right?
I think if he did believe in the Easter Bunny he would praise said bunny’s execution in the realm of egg-laying.
Ted Miller says this on the ESPN Pac-12 blog:
“Many Oregon State fans have risen up against coach Mike Riley after a seventh consecutive loss to Oregon, which ensured a third losing season in five years. His once-secure status is now precarious. “
whatever
At least he’s not saying how lucky were are to have him
Good call….that was one of idiot Miller’s quotes from last season I think.
Does Miller actually get paid by ESPN to run his backwater blog?
The other bottom-feeder was men’s soccer.
Men play soccer?
Real men do.
yup. cause these are real men
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-b6875gzR0
Everyone except the Cowboys, Giants, and Redskins.
Oooh!
An Iggles fan!
I did not know this.
Well… yeah.
Levy got the no-huddle banned for that one AFC Championship game against the Bengals. That’s what is so funny about it all. He got the NFL to officially ban a method of play for one game then used it himself for many years after that.
You mean the team that made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament? There are no bottom-feeders in Pac-12 soccer.
They made it there in 2013?
That’s really what I’m saying.
He really did lose the team last year, and this one year of semi-success doesn’t make up for it.
But… who are we to say anything? We’re not coaches. We don’t know squat about soccer.
Or something like that.
baseball assessment?
I figured that could wait. But anything to pass the time is cool.
Gotta save something for Christmas.
AmIright? ;)
Mariotta leads in their view.

Man, if I was 16 I’d move to Minnesota, declare myself transgender, sign up for girls volleyball and tennis and hang out in the girls locker room. http://www.mncc.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Proposed-Transgender-Policy-FOURTH-Version.pdf
Well, it is beaver related.
And because somebody brought up faux Pelini
http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/12/faux-pelini-bo-pelini
Wait… he gets to bore me in his unemployment too?
Man!
I need a job where I can get $8m for being unemployed.
I will even grant interviews to @FauxJack on a daily basis if given a contract where the state has to pay me guaranteed $millions.
But beware. I might actually say something intelligent every now and then.
Such a contrast between Gina and Lindsay. And yet, it is Lindsay who ends up with the TV gig.
Well Lindsay is an OSU grad. I think it was pretty clear she was a homer. Gina is not an alum.
It wasn’t clear at all. She was a Duck honk if anything.
She was definitely a Riley lovebird but she kept pounding away at who else would want to come to Corvallis.
Huh? Lindsay’s on TV? I thought she was relegated to the dinosaur we know as Swimsuit Illustrated.
I thought the tv only added 20 pounds
camera not TV. derp. CRS again
I’d rather get into an Atlantic City hotel elevator with Ray Rice than have an “in depth” conversation with Mike Riley
I wouldn’t mind getting in an elevator with Ray Rice one bit.
Janay said the same thing

Guys, I am working on my will tonight. To whom should I leave angrybeavs?
Joe Avezzano
Buker?

I vote for Grady. He tells things true.
Mama Machado. Simi Kuli as executor.
Peko. He’s an English major
Reason for firing Pelini: “We weren’t good enough in the games that mattered”
http://coachingsearch.com/article?a=Nebraska-AD-Shawn-Eichorst-We-werent-good-enough-in-the-games-that-mattered
Really dood?
Really?
Your madlibs will continue for years… will they not?
How do you keep yourself awake while you copy and paste these boring posts?
Never heard of the computer thing. Weird.
Hey! It could be worse. NU could have had Booby Petrino as a coach.
Jack, not to pick nits, but did you follow the link to the article?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think someone (or one of us) needs to start a Faux Coach Riley twitter account. I think we could have some fun with that
It’s up and operational.
I’ll need some help with generating material because I’m not all that clever…sometimes.
is it @fakecoachriley ?
No it’s @psycheriley Or Fake Mike Riley
Oh dear! This is a neat deal!
I’ll especially tap into that batshit crazy brain of yours Jack to add mockery
Shouldn’t it be psychriley? (“sike” not “sikey”)
It was giving me trouble with pyschriley otherwise that’s what I wanted to do.
I didn’t find it. Can you link it here?
Ideas, spearmint or peppermint chewing gun. Which bike/helmet combination should I wear this week to work. What can I trade leftover timeouts for.
I got more ideas
Should be there. Posted a tweet on AngryBeavs twitter.
I think maybe it’s time for some levity, some reflection on what it all really means to be a Beaver fan:

Checked the podcast for today… The segment with my call got cut out, but pretty much everything else is there. Granted the podcast archive is often times wonky, but hmmmmm
It’s because you returned Mike Parker’s question to you;
“…but what about Brandon Cooks being so successful in the NFL, and Brandon specifically says that it was playing in Mike Riley’s system that prepared him for the NFL?”
with
“…do we want to be an NFL player factory or a winning college football program?”
I had to work, what was Parker’s reaction to your call (assuming I know the gist of what you said)?
It was a polite thank you and a nod to him being more intelligent than the questions.
Call summary:
I didn’t mean done as in “about to get fired.” I meant done as in the man’s spent.
BTW: Does Dave From Tumwater contribute here?
Didn’t hear that call. What did he say?
Dunno – I’ve only listened twice to the program and he was on it both times.
Who is Dave From Tumwater?
Dave is sort of the flagbearer for the critics. He goes to most of the games (including away games) and called in regularly during the season. He’s an older dude and called it early on this would be a bad season.
he must be a glutton for punishment if he likes watching bad football to attend most if the games home and away
They are not very good NFL quarterbacks either….I guess you can give Derek Andersen his Pro Bowl season.
I say anyone who can start on an NFL team has to be doing something right.
Not sure if I didn’t post this correctly the first time, so apologies if this is a double post. Been reading rumors that Brayden Kearsley plans to transfer from BYU to OSU?

He should fit in nicely. He is already injured.
One of the few players who seemed to want to be playing in the CW.

If Seumalo returns, that’s huge. This year the oline avg 3.8yds a carry vs 3.5 last year. This was with Sapolu starting many games. He was awful.
Woods and Ward averaged over 5 yards a carry. Much more effective than last year.
Seumalo did not play one snap this year.
And he might play no snaps next year….
What is the story with wearing “away” uni’s?
Sounds like the team voted on it and decided that’s what they wanted to wear, then they had to seek permission from the Ducks to make sure they would wear home uni’s.
Have to say, they did look nice on TV, but strange to concede the home jerseys to the visiting team.
Beta dog syndrome. Roll over. Pee on self. Lick Alpha’s muzzle at post-game news conference….
Harsh sarcasm aside, the uniforms did look good.
We threw in the white towel wearing those white uni’s.
It says something about the players not much liking most of the uniform combos, that given the choice, they choose AWAY team unis rather than any of the home combos. Not a good sign, I would think…
I disagree… i thought the white uni’s didn’t look good at all. Black and orange should always be worn in a home civil war.
Another recruit I missed yesterday

Hoke is officially out at Michigan.
Would like to see Harsin in at Oregon State.
Questions
Dave called in today and said he’s heard all the “gonna change, fix things” from Riley stuff before and doesn’t expect any real changes.
I think he’s a closet angrybeav :)
UAB shutting down it’s football program. One less cream puff for SEC teams to schedule
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/11967626/uab-blazers-shut-football-program
Teams that have beat the quacks since 2008:
Boise State x 2
Cal
USC x 2
Stanford x 3 (!)
Ohio State
Auburn
LSU
Arizona x 2
not the beavers :(
It took them that long to lose 13 games?!? Riley did it in the last two years.
And where’s the “quality losses?” Not one FCS team on the list?!?
BSU, USC, Stanford, and UA all won in Eugene too.
For some reason, Stanford can scheme and play disciplined D against UO, but Banker/Beavers cannot…one would think Banker has the most familiarity and motivation.
Anybody want free tix to tomorrow’s MBB vs Miss Vallet St? Hit me up ASAP and I’ll leave a pair at will call for you.
I would but it’s a school night for my sons and 9pm start is kinda late. Damn children. Always getting in the way of my fun!
but also very cool of you to offer them to the jokers around here.
Silly kid, thinks he can contribute right away. I guess nobody has clued him in about Riley’s complicated playbook.

Was her nickname Spuds?
Naaaa, we referred to her as ole Hotdog down a Hallway.
so you enjoyed spelunking?
By the time she had her last baby it came out like it was on a slip-n-slide.
Like feeding a tic-tac to a whale…
I like his attitude, and the fact that he’s recruiting well-rated talent to OSU.
But based on his height, release, pocket passing, I see Riley falling in love with him and there goes the integration of QB mobility into the offense and alleged offensive diversity.
God, 7 more years of Riley…
Watch the end of his tape and he runs the read option and he has some designed roll outs. Guess Riley will have to reprogram him.
7 more years? You know Riley will pull out at least 3 6-6 seasons.
that’s gonna be tough with bottom feeders WSU and CU getting better. Although I think we’re done playing the buffs for a few years now.
I hope this kid is the next Mannion (or Manning) but from what I gather, he’s more likely to be the next Brock Osweiler
Not tall enough.
Will the recent allegations against the UVA frat guys turn out to be another Duke lacrosse case? The Washington Post has concerns about Rolling Stone’s vetting process.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2014/12/02/rolling-stone-whiffs-in-reporting-on-alleged-rape/
On the cover of the Rollin Stone!!!
what an absolute breath of fresh air to read/hear this. Keep it up Tinkle, staff and players. Some of us are liking what we are seeing already
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2014/12/wayne_tinkle_works_to_change_h.html

Riley leaving for Nebraska!
That’s the word I just heard too!
