OSU has 6 QBs on the roster.
Del Rio
VanderVeen
Kempt
McMaryion
Sanders
Mitchell
Andersen recruited Utah QB Austin Kafentzis to Wisconsin. Wonder if he comes to OSU now. He looks like the undersized, savvy type of guy who can run a little of every offense.
Either way, log jam that needs to sort out, because there can’t be 6 or even 7 QBs on the roster. Maybe the more pro-style guys follow Riley to Nebraska.
Sanders was playing ST and WR. Remove him and add Pensyl?
Good that Sanders is off the list, but that still leaves 5 (or 6 if Pensyl keeps his commit).
Anyone know the Nebraska situation and how many of these guys, if any, follow Riley?
Nebraska has a kid we recruited, Drew Stanton. So Riley nows this kid. I believe he may have had a knee injury. The returning starter is a RB playing QB. Pretty bad passer.
Oops. Johny Stanton
Johnny
This may be an unpopular decision, but I’m still on board for Garrett. I knew the offense wasn’t going to change too much since Mannion was a senior. I don’t see the woven son OC coming over.
Really doubt Andersen keeps Garrett. Andersen, in one of his interviews on youtube, stressed that the threat of option puts a lot of stress on a defense. He wants to do it badly.
Yeah and really the only qbs on the roster that can’t do that are Kempt and maybe del rio. The other guys could do that.
And be woven son I mean Wisconsin. I don’t see that coordinator coming over.
Knitted daughter?
Based on that premise, who is the QB next year? VanderVeen is supposedly mobile, and Del Rio is at least athletic. Mitchell is a pocket QB, correct? Based on that is McMaryion the best option for the spread that Andersen wants to run? None of them have much, or any, game experience.
If Austin Kafentzis comes here, I’d say why not start him? His HS numbers are absurd.
He’s a good looking athlete who seems to run the read option well, but his arm is worse than anything we’ve seen at OSU in a long time (before I started following the team in ’98, anyway). I’d give it a B- at best.
Then again, I know nothing about GA’s offense, so he could be a great fit.
having a QB that can’t pass is an even bigger liability than having one that can’t run.
I think he’s got plenty of arm. He set the Utah state record in the javelin, 3rd in the nation last year as a junior. He may not be Ryan Katz, but I saw some throws on his tape that looked pretty strong.
By arm I mean strength and accuracy. Compare his throws to Pensyl’s. Pensyl has the better arm and it isn’t close. He puts the ball in a better spot for his receiver and he doesn’t throw nearly as many floaters.
If you’re going to run a spread where a QB has designed runs you’d better have more than one capable QB.
You’re right. That is a very unpopular opinion. [slap slap slap]
I love Steve Preece calling Riley out for lack of discipline and lack of toughness.
Preach it, Preece! It’s like the unoffical gag order on Riley criticism has been lifted.
Just the facts, ma’am.
Paraphrased:
“you can’t lead the league in penalties and claim to be tough”
“when you throw a fade on 3rd and 1 you are not showing toughness”
Right? All the sudden everyone on Blitz is critical. Now…after he is gone. Lol
Where was this?
Interview on the Joe Beaver show.
Angry, what is your take on James Pensyl? He’s coming here for sure. I’ve seen his film and he has a good arm and Derek Anderson size, but not a great deal of speed. Personally, I like Vanderveen more than Del Rio. I noticed near the end of the season that he wasn’t even mentioned in the QB competition, so I think that Riley already had his mind set on Del Rio, who wasn’t as impressive in fall camp as BV. I think that changes with Andersen coming in as Del Rio is more of a pro-style QB.
Seems like a slow, elongated release to me, but I don’t have the best eyes for that stuff and one reason I enjoy this board. Jack, SS, Angry, some others have good observations.
How do you know he’s definitely committing?
He has a pretty good arm, but his footwork looks terrible. The way he steps into throws almost looks like he’s naturally right-handed and trying to throw lefty.
Pensyl was Garret’s prize recruit. Probably all depends on what happens to Garret in the next week or so. If he remains on the OSU staff, Pensyl likely stays. If Garrett gets picked up by another team, I could see Pensyl following him. But if Garrett ends up out of college football, I think Pensyl stays at OSU. Doesn’t have any other offers.
I’ve been conversing with him on social media. He’s set on coming here.
OSU might be Pensyl’s only option now. If he has good relationships with recruits Andersen wants to keep, then sure bring him in.
With Ludwig heading for the HC position at Wisconsin, I would guess that everyone is in a holding pattern until Andersen names an OC. Obviously there will be a shakeout in the QB ranks and likely some additions that Andersen & Co. would want around.
Ludwig isn’t becoming Wisconsin HC – it was a joke
this is how rumors get started.
So I guess this net link is just a lie….
http://www.shareonfb.com/u5ylcb/Andy_Ludwig_hired_as_the_new
is your browser broken? leave the page open for a minute.
That’s why I cross-verify crazy stuff like that
Lots of crazy stuff like Riley going to Nebraska and Andersen to OSU has taken place. At least Ludwig sticking around Madtown sounded reasonable.
Not if you know any Badger fans. Imagine if Banker was named HC.
ROTFLMAO! Gotcha.
Did I just hear that right?
I heard some radio station in the background talking about the Andersen hire, and the host said that $25m were anonymously donated after the hire.
Someone brought up the stock market in another thread, albeit for a different reason. And this is what always killed me about the Pollyannas and their, “well then pony up,” attitudes.
OSU is like a stock. People research the management and look at the products and services of the company. If it continues to make poor decisions, people are likely to withhold money, and the stock will wither. People are just not in the habit of throwing good money after bad.
That one of the Pollyannas’ favorite arguments was to do just this made me angry every time they said it.
And now it seems good business and sound management is followed by public investment dollars flowing in.
Go figure.
I believe he said $25 million had been donated in the last few weeks, not necessarily since Riley left.
Since the hiring of Andersen, meaning in the last day an anonymous donor gave it.
I’ll try again. He said the last few weeks, not since the hiring of Andersen.
Not what the host said. But I think you’re right anyway. This is all I could find.
https://twitter.com/johncanzanobft/status/543143267995369472
My guess is Wesley Edens is the anonymous donor. I tweeted his daughter a few weeks back to have her tell him we needed him to help the situation at OSU. You guys can thank me later by buying a beer for me at some of the tailgates next year.
Okay, maybe I missed that as well. But during yesterday’s press conference, they definitely said that $25 million had been raised in the last few weeks.
I’ve heard that about $10 million of that was being earmarked toward buying Riley out, enough big donors were so fed up with him.
Thank you “dear old Nebraska U.”
I find it amazing that people were able to gather $10M to pay a guy to not do his job anymore.
I find it even more amazing that Nebraska was willing to pay us, to not have that guy do this job anymore, saving us that $10M. I am still having trouble believing this is all happening.
If Nebraska could have waited another couple weeks, they likely could have gotten the Riley staff, while having the bill paid for by OSU boosters. Serious good fortune for the OSU program.
It is truly amazing. it would be awesome if Pelini could get hired at Wiskey and we could see how coaching musical chairs plays out.
You’d have to say OSU came out on top in all 3 scenarios too. WTF?
Yes we did.
Good god, yes…..and it doesnt matter what the performance of Riley or whoever at W, for that evaluation. We were stuck with a zombie coach and no way out of it except throwing huge money his way. Riley can set the world on fire at N, and it doesnt change the fact that he was just cruising, here. Yeah, the media morons would make something out of it, but it doesnt change anything — we WIN.
I donated to the annual fund as opposed to a specific program, now that I trust Ray, BDC, and staff to make good decisions (well, more than I used to ;) )
McMariyon looks the most mobile on video, but Mitchell and Vanderveen are decent athletes, too.
Kempt seems like the obvious odd man out to me.
Spoke with a couple of freshmen redshirt receivers. They think McMaryion is the fastest and best QB of the group. Obviously he threw them the ball more, but they take passes from the other QBs as well. Gotta be a fast and smart QB for the spread option. And you need more than 1; at least 2, and even 3, if you have them.
I think it is less about having the most athletic QB in the world and more about having the threat of running there to keep the D honest.
I agree. I think you need at least what Dalton could do at TCU (or did to OSU anyway, but who didn’t?) and what Luck did at Stanford. Neither “running” qb’s really, but did enough to make defenses pay and move the chains. When you do that, you can really take the edge off of a defense.
Now watch Mannion get to do this in the NFL and become an sudden sucess like Remmers and Hecker…, free of the Riley & co pudwhacking
As always, I don’t know the rules about transferring. Wondering if a guy has to sit out a year after sitting out as a redshirt last year?
I know Luke Del Rio didn’t have to sit out when he transferred because he hadn’t played yet, and wasn’t on scholarship. If a guy like Mitchell or McMarion wants to transfer to Nebraska, would he have to sit out a year still? Not saying I want to lose either, just curious how that would play out.
Everyone would have to sit out a year. Del Rio didn’t have to since he was not a recruited athlete at Alabama.
I actually don’t see any of the QB’s transferring. Maybe someone switches to a different position.
Kempt most likely.
Del Rio may have gotten some favorable treatment from Mike Riley this past season, but that’s history now. Knowledge of MR’s famously complex offense also just became irrelevant. With Gary Andersen and a new OC coming, we will presumably see an open competition for QB this Spring and Fall, with everyone getting a fair and equal shot. Del Rio may not be super happy about this, but everyone else should be….
” Knowledge of MR’s famously complex offense also just became irrelevant.”
Just think, all that time wasted.
But enough about Riley’s last five years here.
Yea you know good ol boy Riley had a good ol boy deal with Mr Del Rio (dad).
http://grantland.com/the-triangle/college-football-lightning-round-gary-andersen-wisconsin-oregon-state/
At least they admit Riley was garbage over these last five years.

Zach Nyborg from BYU coming as director of football. Young active guy who can relate well with the young athletes.
From 247 Sports:
“University of Nebraska Head Football Coach Mike Riley announced on Thursday the hiring of four assistant football coaches that will help lead the Husker football program into the future. All four assistant coaches worked for Riley at Oregon State, and all have proven track records as great coaches, teachers, mentors and outstanding recruiters.
The full-time coaches announced on Thursday include defensive assistants Mark Banker and Trent Bray, offensive assistant Mike Cavanaugh, and one of the nation’s most respected special teams experts in Bruce Read. No coordinator designations, other than special teams, have been made to this point.”
Compare and contrast, children….
It’s hilarious but also sad. I offer them solidarity.
Read: So expert he needs only 9 or 10 players on special teams plays.
LOL
There’s a typo….I believe it should read “help lead the Husker football program into the toilet”.
Read is respected for the same reason Riley was… that is how the hell does a below average performer keep his job so long?
Jesus at least Riley let me play lacrosse in Reser and Truax!!! Thanks pal
Rumor on twitter is that Kyle Wittingham is interviewing for Michigan job
Andersen to Utah?
What is the buyout?
I wonder if he’s pissed off now that he didn’t wait a few days.
oops, just realized i was echoing your thoughts
THAT would be a kick in the Beaver nads.
I told BeaverGopher to keep the “Luck O the Gopher” to himself….
That CRAFTY goddammed BDC!
He’s flipping coaches and making money!
$500K for Riley, more for Andersen…what next?!?
It’s not even whether he goes but just that he might be regretting his decision…don’t want a coach who is regretting his choice.
i wonder what the buyout terms are.
Probably nothing at this point. Andersen has likely not signed a contract yet.
What? How is that possible to announce a new coach if he hasn’t signed a contract? Terms were 5 years at 2.5 mil, too, which was announced.
It some times takes several months to officially sign these contracts. Lawyers and all. Lots of obscure details to work out.
You would never announce without a contract signed. Otherwise you would see last minute changes occasionally which you don’t ever see.
Recall the Mike Price incident from several years ago. He got hired from WSU to Alabama. Went there and took control and got fired before coaching a game. He had never signed his contract. So technically he got fired before he got hired.

Apparently, Wittingham isn’t in Ann Arbor, despite the reports. Saw somebody else report that he was heading a Utah team meeting today even.
Classless Skip ?@MenaceSocietyUT 1h1 hour ago Salt Lake City, UT
@sltribsports @UtahCoachWhitt
“People think I’m in Ann Arbor today? LOL.”
Nah Vallis>Utah
Imagine if Wittingham takes off. Would that make Gary Andersen second guess his decision to come to Corvallis?
Wittingham also interviewed for the Nebraska position…
How the hell do you take Riley over Wittingham….
No shit.
Didn’t I read that Andersen and Whittingham are friends? If so I’m sure they’ve talked all this shit over.
I think they got along fine when they coached together, though I always wondered why Andersen went to Southern Utah for that one year. He came back so it looks like the relationship was good.
Oh wow.

Clint Brewster ?@clintbrew247
I’ve confirmed that Bo Pelini is indeed in the mix to take over at #Wisconsin.
https://twitter.com/clintbrew247/status/543153982227492864
Another thing I learned listening to an interview today from some Wisconsin media. State law in Wisconsin is similar to Oregon in that there is a waiting period before they can hire somebody to an open position, but the waiting time is 2 WEEKS. We’re gonna be hearing rumors about that job for quite awhile.
His dad is an idiot, so I’m betting it runs in the family. Supposedly an Olympic class pot smoker though.
Who, Pelini? How can he not be more chill?
Brewster Jr.
If that happens I will have to DVR the Badger/Husker game. I cannot miss Pelini going medieval on Riley’s ass.
Kempt is lost in the shuffle. Who thinks he will stick around?
Here is the link to the Joe Beaver show today, lots of good stuff
http://hypothetical.net/beaver/assets/JoeBeaverShow_2014-12-11.mp3
Can I throw a fantasy out there? Has Chuckie Keeton graduated? Will he get the medical redshirt that has been filed? Can he transfer to OSU for one year to showcase what he can do in a Power 5 conference?
He has 1 year left and could transfer if he wanted.
I kind of doubt he would do that to Wells in the end, but it’s fun to dream. Keeton has been injury prone also.
What are the transfer rules when a couch quits such as silis red usc ?
Don’t know, but a sofa can play immediately.
“bevobait” apparently has some serious interior decorator chops……the “couch” is in “silis red” which is a color I’m unfamiliar with, but probably looks great! Can’t wait until he comments about OSU uniforms!
time for a website name change!
almosthappybeavs.com
Johnny Hekker is sure earning his paycheck tonight. Jesus the Rams offense is beyond horrible. 15 yards of total offense in the 3rd quarter, zero first downs and five straight punts now.
Has there been any talk of GA’s intro press conference? Seems like it has to be tomorrow, right?
tomorrow at 1:30 at VFC. It is open to the public
Cool, thanks. Hope it’s as good as the VFC press conference. I hope Bobby D drops a “Fuck all y’all” on us.
There is a block on this page which, when clicked, will allow you to watch the presser on the PAC12 net if you cannot attend.

Still saying McMaryion like I always have…. Don’t know why anyone else is even mentioned except for politics (Del Rio)….. G wants a spread, and G said F U to the cheeziest state in the union to spread that beautiful dream of a functional spread “O” on crusty bread only appreciated by the PNWX. Go Beavers
I like him too. I honestly think it’s between him and VanderVeen. They seem like a good fit. VV is taller and MM is shorter, but faster.
Posted in the comment section of espn article about Riley bring banker, bray…etc. I have to assume Ryan’s dad, extremely telling.
Reggie Murphy
Nebraska, your are in trouble. Since my son plays for Oregon State, I dealt with Riley and his “staff” and even though my son had a good career there were many play calls, personnel moves, game time decisions that were extremely questionable.
The team lack toughness, discipline and a killer instinct all of which is very indicative of Mr. Riley’s character. He is great guy but personally I like more fire in my football coach.
Ackrite’s post needs more visibility, Angry. good material for stalenarrative
Oregon State: BYU director of football operations Zach Nyborg will join Gary Andersen at Oregon State, according to Jarom Jordan of BYUtv.
And Tedford heading to the CFL. http://www.sportsnet.ca/football/cfl/lions-leaning-toward-hiring-tedford-as-head-coach/#__federated=1
Wisconsin: According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Pitt head coach Paul Chryst is “poised to return” to Wisconsin as head coach. Chryst is a former player and assistant at the school. Fox Sports’ Ross Jones is reporting that Chryst is on his way to meet with Wisconsin officials.
Sucks for Wisconsin.
And good for us, Chryst runs Riley’s pro style ‘offense’, so Austin Kafentzis is more likely to end up here.
And you guys said there are no successful coaches from the Riley coaching tree! The Riley tree has one small sapling
So… Nebraska AND Wiscy both get former OSU coaches. Michigan just fired one.
Barry will hire Chryst or Bevell as I think he wants someone with an emotional tie to the school and that will put up with his fingers in the pie. There is nothing wrong with the offense if it is run correctly. Chryst’s version is run heavy, power football. I think it is awesome, real football. With a good QB, it is as good as it gets. PC is a good hire for them. He would have been the coach two years ago, but Alvarez did not want to burn bridges becausehe helped get PC the Pitt job the previous year.
because he
And being the nice guy he is, MR won’t mind Chryst kicking his ass year after year.
Could Selemo transfer if his dad is not on staff? I know working under Cavanaugh was part of what brought him here. Anyway there’s one offensive lineman we need to keep
Not likely. He used his redshirt this year. Only had one year to play left. If he transfers he’ll have to get a hardship waiver which is unlikely. Hardship waivers are mostly used when a player wants to be close to a sick relative not bc his dad lost his job.
He’s actually got two years left. He was a freshman in 2012.
But he would have to sit another year, right?
You’re right, I kept thinking next year is his senior year.
Sister is coming in as a volleyball recruit. Keep them both. If you look at recruiting results for past two years, Brennan and Seumalo were underpaid compared to rest of staff. Read salary was preposterous compared to rest of staff in relation to coaching and recruiting results.
