Twitter Handle for Live Recruiting Updates

254

Let’s brainstorm to think of a twitter handle for live twitter (recruiting) updates.

We could stick with my current one of angry beavs. The perk is that it might get new readers to the site. I’m willing to share my password with a few readers here who follow recruiting closely and tweet a lot. I personally feel the best idea is an open account where a handful of guys know the password and can post updates. That way, if someone is away from a PC someone else can post the update. The way this mechanism works is that if someone tweets information at you, you then have to retweet it for it to post live here on AB.

I am open to other ideas. But keep in mind this handle will be visible on the right side of the page. So we don’t want anything that’s obnoxious to look at or read. Let’s keep it simple in the spirit of the site’s design.

Recommendations for a handle?

      • I only know Twitter in that I have an account that has never tweeted or followed anyone. I only use it to lurk. In fact, I rarely log in. I just cruise tweets when I’m bored. There’s a lot of info out there.

But I do understand that space is limited. The thing is… we’re not in this to aggregate and expand like some profit-seeking thing. We’re in this for us… and freedom of info… and positive reinforcement. We know Pollyannas and doubters and media and recruits look at us. Hell, we know OSU and coaches look at us. What we want and vocalize are the things PSAs and coaches all want (I can say that now). So now that we’re redundant we need to reinforce what we’ve made redundant.

And that’s not to say that we were the only ones to make change happen. We have been a constant burr in the saddle, but real people have created real change. And I thank them profusely for it all.

        And thank you, Nebraska.

As far as “botching” the hashtag goes… it’s my experience that most people copy and paste what they want. All that has to be done is to make it something people want to copy and paste.

  1. Angry, check your email. Set up an account for interested users with twitter handle @BeavRecruiting

If any of you on here like to provide twitter content to the angrybeavs site (like Beaverkman who i’ve already followed), let me know who you are and I’ll follow you.

Wondering if the hashtag idea is a possibility for this feed, since I can see how multiple users posting to a single account could cause issues and slow down the process for posters since they’d have to log in and out of their normal account and this new one.

  2. BeavRecruiting is fine by me. I like the old Benny logo, too. Good job.

Now those who follow recruiting closely on Twitter, email me, and I will give you the password to this account. See above how to manage two accounts, so you don’t have to log out of your main one to post recruiting updates.

  3. OT…

Mannion isn’t impressing at Senior Bowl practices:

So far we’ve seen undraftable QB Sean Mannion in practice. Just like most of his 2014 game film… #SeniorBowl

    https://twitter.com/dpbrugler/status/557623979113218053

It’s a very labored process when Sean Mannion throws the football. Slow, long delivery with no zip.

    Nelson is doing well:

North practice stand outs: RB David Cobb (MN), WR Jamison Crowder (Duke), DT Carl Davis (Iowa), LB Mike Hull (PSU), CB Steven Nelson (OSU).

    https://twitter.com/MattBowen41/status/557638167613153280

As expected, CB Steven Nelson has been impressive. Patient but competitive. If I can steal him in the 3rd, Id consider my draft a success

    • I should have requested this long ago, but I’m reminded by the Twitter box and clicking on the handles. Can you set the click-thru on the site so that any and all links open in a new tab?

    • You’re welcome. Mamma Machado pissed me off with that paywall scam she ran last month. I’m curious to see how just using twitter can rival …rivals. Maybe not as good, but it should be darn close and for free.

      • Said it before, and especially with Blitz, that the only real content in the pay sites is the stories. I’ve read some of the free stories and I don’t think they’re well written or highly informative. I don’t care about the stories. Just need to know who is looking at OSU, what they think about OSU, etc. BeavRecruiting will do just that, all in one spot.

        Brilliant.

        • The best info on blitz was from members. I don’t know why some of them don’t show up here and share that info instead of giving mamma machado her paywall to hide behind? I guess we are too belligerent? Hey, we are into free speech, dissent, etc. It’s a very pro American thing. Those dudes hiding behind the paywall are control freak commies in my book!

          • So earlier this week, Blitz hosted a chat and the topic came up about the recruiting world changing because of twitter and quick access to information. Mama said something along the lines of (i’m paraphrasing) “It used to be, I could “own” the lead on a breaking commit for a couple of hours. Now that’s not the case.”

She then said that her business model has had to change more recently by adding more stories/interviews by directly contacting the athletes, to get more content that is specific to her site.

For those who take issues with people directly contacting athletes, I think it’s fair to question the recruiting sites reaching out to them and using those conversations for profit.

          • Along those lines, Nemec talked about trying to call Jay Irvine during the GA visit. He said Irvine picked up the phone during the visit and told him he didn’t have time to talk right now because he was in the middle of a home visit with coach. Nemec said he knew something was up by the tone in Irvine’s voice, so he knew a commit was coming. Why is Nemec trying to call a kid directly, while it’s known he’s having the coaches over for a visit?

          • At least she realizes her business model is a dinosaur. She should just make it all free and put up ads. That’s the model. Yes, it too is becoming saturated, but nobody wants to pay for content, and Americans are poorer these days, so they can’t even afford it. Best to let the corporation subsidize the content and then they can hope Americans buy their products. If I didn’t hate Google and Amazon (and cluttered websites) I’d probably use their ad programs here.

  4. That BeavRecruiting is a great move. Angie gonna be pissed with all that info available from twitter, FOR FREE, FROM VARIOUS SOURCES, all in one spot. I love it.

If you get any current recruits / future recruits to follow you back, I can guarantee that’s a real barometer of interest by them, in Oregon State.

    Great idea.

    • funny you should mention it. we already have a couple of recruits following back. Chaz-Ah-Yu, Derrick Baity and Keivonnis Davis. Not bad for such a young account.

This brings into question, how should we handle contact with recruits. Should we avoid any and all direct contact with them, unless they message us first? Or leave them out altogether? Or is it ok to contact them with media type requests, as long as they’re respectful?

I know that some of the local media who handle various recruiting sites contact the athletes directly, using DM’s. For those who take issue with this account contacting recruits, I’d be curious what your thoughts are on the media contacting them.

i think the common goal here is to provide free/quick/relative information to Beaver recruiting, for anybody who cares to follow. There will always be room for improvement, so feel free to make suggestions or criticize.

      • I don’t think we should make contact, because the questions will post to the twitter feed, and that could get cluttered fast. It’s best to just retweet info or the recruits posts. If you have a question, contact them via pm, then you can post that info. I think that’s best but we can brainstorm it. We don’t want the feed cluttered with entire conversations.

        • I agree on NOT MAKING CONTACT. Although fans do it all the time, it can still get in the way of coaches recruiting. I’ve seen where fans suggest a kid still consider “their” school cause another recruit will “just change positions” etc. Makes the coaches put out fires that never should have started.

Also noticed that Tuiaki is following your account. I’d just use it your tweeting, retweeting, ZERO contact though.

Still a brilliant idea. everything in one spot.

  5. Also, for any of the AB’s who have access to the account, I’ve found that adding a 2nd account to your phone is pretty easy to manage when it comes to switching back and forth. I have the android app on my phone and you just go to accounts and pick the one you currently want displayed. Pretty simple to move back and forth between multiple handles.

  6. Noah Togiai with a great in home visit? That is great. He looks like a great multi sport prospect. I’m sure Tinkle would let him walk on…

      • You’re not wrong on his talent. But you’re not right on how he’s better. Daniel and Cheikh are better defenders against other bigs. I would say Jarmal has claimed some respect, although, he has been inconsistent. Togiai is like Jarmal except he’s already polished and pretty physical.

The only thing I don’t like about the Tinkle era is that it’s pretty obvious that he doesn’t make all the players run the Mikan drill. I would run that damn thing as conditioning/punishment if I were coach. 10 minutes will kill a body. But that 10 minutes teaches you how not to miss within five feet. You start to experiment with English and how you can get the ball up and in without the coaches seeing that you’re just flat tired… which they see anyway.

  7. Personally would rather it show more than one tweet at once.

It’s annoying to have to scroll. If there is one new tweet, I still have to scroll down and look if there are more new tweets. The window is just so small. IDK, am I alone in that opinion?

  8. Please replace Andrew Nemec’s face with a goat’s head….should be easy to write an algorithm to do this for you Comp Sci/Engineer types. Just the look of him pisses me off….!

  10. I have to say you guys are awesome! Loving the twitter feed and the new handle… That is legit! I have been following angry for a minute and finally decided to make a profile … I remember stumbling onto it years ago with the old website… Now your taking it to a new level… Good job!

  11. So Dayan Lake just followed our twitter handle, prior to us following him. Also saw this message which I thought was a joke but maybe not?

All Blue Everything (@BYUAllBlue) tweeted at 8:52 PM on Tue, Jan 20, 2015:
A guy wearing an Oregon State jacket and orange Nike shoes just walked into this taco joint, ordered a burrito and flipped a 4-star recruit.

Get the official Twitter app at https://twitter.com/download?s=13

      • That’s what I was figuring too, just thought it was a strange coincidence that a 4* former BYU commit followed the beavrecruiting account at the same time I was reading that message about the taco shop. It’s really surprising how many SA’s are following this account already. I’m guessing twitter sends out a “you should follow” or “popular in your network” type message which hooks some who may not have known about it otherwise.

    • I would rather play them full strength. RPI considers this stuff. Whether we win or lose, his presence will be considered in the end. And if he’s there… we will shut him down. That will be a statement in itself.

Can we shut down Looney? That will be the game. Can we make Powell concentrate on D instead of O? Can we make the Bryce Bros play down to their abilities?

It’s all about Looney. He’s the player on that team. If he shows up, we lose. If he’s a part of the current UCLA team, we win.

    • Besides his 55 sacks in the last two years, Fehoko’s total tackles and TFL #’s are equally impressive. His cousin Breiden Fehoko, a DT from Honolulu, enrolled a week ago at Texas Tech, so that could be a destination as well.

    • Wtf?

Fehoko is back in play? Is the other Fehoko in play also?

Moevao said they were “big time” recruiting this past week. Folau, who everyone assumes will now go to Nikegon, is still in play. We are one of his top four. I haven’t heard much on Porter Gustin. I’m assuming we’re too late for him. I’m thinking either ASU or USC for him. Osa Masina has been quiet lately. But again, we’re late and he’s all over the UCLA/ASU angle.

Unlike any time Riley was here, I can dream of OSU poaching and plundering and and grabbing a whole D consisting of a couple Fehokos, a Falau, a little Gustin here and a little Masina there.

This was not reality two months ago. It doesn’t all have to come true. But that it is even not the silliest idea ever is a major change.

    • So do we want to consider who we should be following? The handle is following some of these recruits family and girlfriends? who are just tweeting garbage.

      • I’ve been keeping my follows to just potential recruits, coaches and media. I don’t think we should follow family either. not sure who all has control of the account, but think it would be good to leave people who don’t fit that criteria out of it. agree that it gets too much garbage in the feed. Feel free to clear out anybody you don’t think fits.

I figure after signing day, we’ll need to go through and delete several people too.

        • Like I said, it’s an aggregate info deal. This new account doesn’t comment on or analyze any of the info. It just reports what is there. Correction takes place in conversation.

I don’t know what it does or doesn’t take to follow someone… or what that means. I follow Twitter by the search function alone.

      • Who has the password? I thought it was Beaverkman, myself, and Blazer? Let’s keep it to that. I wrote BKM saying not to follow junk. Let’s keep this on point only recruiting stories. Let’s trim down the junk now that someone has added it. I don’t think a Wayne Tinkle chat belongs, either.

  12. Both adblock and ghostery are blocking the new twitter box for me, and when it’s blocked there is no indication that it even might exist. You maybe ought to hide some static text behind it describing what’s supposed to be there and how to unblock it.

In Ghostery, “Twitter Button” must be enabled.
In adblock, both the “Antisocial filter list” and “Fanboy’s Annoyances” block it.

    • That image is watermarked. I’d like to update the photo too. just threw the account together while on lunch break yesterday and didn’t have time to find good photo, but agree that the grainy Reser pic needs to be swapped out. it’s more just a placeholder. again, open to suggestions and i’ll see if i can find a good MU photo that isn’t watermarked

          • I sent her ran email to ask for permission. I’m not hopeful though, as it looks like she sells the digital version of the image for $750 (for a 2 year lease only) Needless to say, that’s not in the budget.

It’s a pretty cool shot though. Seems like anything else I can find with the MU is shadowy or has bad weather.

          • Well the yellow part is clearly layers, then the blue sky has an unnatural bump in the blue slider. The greens, yellows, and blues are bizarre and fake. Looks like the clouds are also a fake layer. Also since there are no shadows or blown highlights, it looks like HDR was used.

Are we analyzing a photo? This looks more like a photo that was painted over and manipulated heavily in PS. As a painting it’s pretty good. As PS art it’s on par. As a photo it stinks (other than the composition–good use of the trees).

          • Ahhh… the filter is open. There are two shadows still in place despite this.

At least it’s not a Thomas Kinkaid painting where every light and every shadow is just bonkers and making a headache out of something.

          • The only shadows in play are going to be beneath the trees and on the stairs. If you look closely at the right side of the main staircase, you will see two shadows that are out of place. They may remain so because it looks like this is an extended shutter pic. The clouds are not out of place. They are as natural as waking up in this region. The brightness can easily be explained away with the reflection in the windows… which belie a clear sunrise and the light necessary for such a shot.

          • My issue is that I’ve been a photographer for 15 years and have noticed the trend into the absurd (as photoshop has progressed, photos have become more and more like paintings).

Yes, you can argue darkrooms have always been used to manipulate photos, “dodge and burn”, saturate, etc. But they still looked very close to what comes out of the camera.

There should be a separate category now of photoshop art. These being the ones above that would never come out of a camera, nor would anything close to that come out of a camera. If you go to OSU you will not see anything like that picture. I find that a disservice since a photo is supposed to capture real life. This would be better off as a painting or clearly labeled as fake PS art, imo

          • I’m dealing with the same issues in one of my other hobbies, music/engineering. The extreme use of limiters to crush dynamic range and bump loudness. It makes music sound non-musical. Then things like autotune, drumming to metronomes, etc….I’m just not a fan of the trend. We’re in a phase with all digital technology right now where people marvel at what it can do by jacking up all the sliders, as if that is some kind of homage or talent…I hate it.

          • I agree on the artistic side. If you’ve not seen that view of the MU, you’ve not sat on the lawn in the middle of the quad at sunrise. The views over the Women’s Building are better most of the time. But the Mu being all lit up until well after sunrise makes it just fun to look at… ummm… under certain circumstances… which may or may not involve alcohol… and all-nighters… and the occasional theft of golf carts.

          • And on the music side it’s harder to qualify. There are some really good DJs out there. Still, it’s like a friend of mine always tried to argue with me. He said he knew all the notes and chords and progressions and could play the blues. He wasn’t wrong. He just could never feel it. And it showed when he played his gitar. He was great at the speed metal thing. But he was in no way a blues artist.

          • I would argue that the DJs who get it right do have that soul necessary. Their music is valid in every genre because they put an actual heart into their work. I’m not going to one of their concerts. I don’t value their effort as much as I would someone I would go see live. But I do appreciate their efforts, their contributions and their artistry.

          • Yeah, exactly. Music has to have a musicality. Sometimes that is even sloppy, by technical standards. Good examples are most punk artists, but even guys like Pete Townshend and J. Paige (very sloppy lead player) were always “spot on” with timing, notes, bends, etc. A big part of music is feel and self-expression, and those are very rarely robotic, cold, right on time, etc. I prefer a little slop in my playing and the music I listen to. It’s one reason I gave up guitar lessons as a kid. I didn’t want to learn how to play so precise. I wanted some “punk” or edge in my music. This is all preference, I guess. Some people like the really cold, robotic sounds. I just can’t get into that. Give me realism, with all it’s flaws.

This is translating over into engineering. It’s REALLY bad in that realm. Limiters are being misused badly. And digital plugins, too. Then the engineer will complain his mix “lacks something” that analog had….duh

I think this called getting older. Damn kids with their abuse of new technology!

The “loudness” peaked and had been falling slightly since 2005 apparently. I know it’s a real thing though just busting your chops…

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war

          • I’ve also had two photos published (ironically on yahoo but also reader’s digest), and another used in a google app. So I just want to be clear I’m not talking from a position of jealousy or this and that. It’s the same position I write AB from: just keep it real. Can we keep photography real? Surrealism is more for painting, imo. Photoshopping the hell out of a picture and using layer masks takes about 10 minutes of research on youtube. It’s not a talent, and it’s hackneyed. I hope it stops. I hope the loudness wars stop.

          • I get it, and I’m with you on music. But if a DJ does the work involved to make it sound human, then I can at least say he did an awesome job. It will likely take an immense amount of time to do so. Why would I diminish that effort just because s/he’s not going to duplicate it in a live show?

Going back to the original pic we were talking about, I don’t see much there except for extended shutter. Maybe you have otherwise knowledge. But it looks genuine based on my personal experience… and faulty memory.

I guess a look into her portfolio might give me some idea of manipulation. I just cruised through it, and I thought it was cool that every place she shot I had seen in real life. But the manipulation part is way beyond me. I’m into the art of it. I like to think I can see falsifications. But I need education on what is or is not possible.

          • Hey angry have you listened to Foo Fighters wasting light album? I’d be interested in your opinion of the recording and mixing. They recorded the whole thing in Dave’s basement on analog then Butch Vig mixed it.

It is amazing give a new listen to some old punk and metal albums and think about what went in to analog recording and mixing.

          • No, I haven’t heard that Foo Fighters record. I don’t listen to them much at all. Send me a link to a song on youtube or something (though it will be a compressed mp3…). It should give me an idea.

I used to record on analog…as recently as 2007. That was a 1/2″ 8-track. I still have an analog 4 track (1/4″ tape, so bouncing limits it). I like digital recording, too. The trick with digital is not going overboard. Sometimes I will run my final digital mix through my 4-track just to add tape saturation to it. This is a great modern day application of an analog 4-track.
My lady is a good singer, so sometimes we’ll noodle on the 4-track and do “demos”, too. Analog has a far superior sound, but digital has perks like convenience (that’s really the only perk lol)…maybe headroom, but I like saturated tape sound.

          • Hello?

Those clouds over the MU are constant during the winter months. That combined with cloud break can make for some spectacular shots in this area.

My wife always harps at me about not having a camera and taking shots. I always respond by telling her that I’ve already captured the moment in my mind and will remember it. It’s nice to see pics that I would have taken in those times at those places

But it’s disturbing that someone may feel the need to “enhance” any of those shots.

    • thought it was funny that Andrew Nemec retweeted one of our posts yesterday.

I think things will really pick up Thursday night/Friday morning when players start making their way to Corvallis, and it should stay busy through signing day. Good timing for starting this up.

      • What’s our hashtag?

We need to nail it down. #GoBeavs doesn’t work because it’s plain and universal. We need something that is identifying… a signature.

        I’ve put in my try.

        • I’m up for adding your hashtag if there aren’t any other suggestions/objections.

the problem with hashtagging everything is it slows the process down, especially when using a mobile app. Currently, all we’re doing is re-tweeting existing content not adding anything original. When using the mobile app, it doesn’t give me the option to modify the retweet with my own content. Using a desktop is simpler because you can quote things and add your hashtag, but I’m mostly mobile. For now I’ll add it when I can. (I’m technically on the clock, so anything to save time makes this whole process easier to pull off)

          • Cool… I don’t know Twitter or any of the ins and outs other than reading off the search function. I would say only hashtag after hours. Make it an evening event. Withhold your love for only those who are worthy… which would be everyone.

But you would also get a sense of it being “prime time.”

            Next question:
Do you get points or money for the amount of people who follow you? Or is it as I think–a cry for attention beyond cries?

      • As an aside…

I hope Max Tuerk and Sark both break their knees while just walking around today. As a bonus, I hope there is video for both… like there was when Tuerk took that cheap shot shit on Tago’s knee per Sark’s direction… I think.

  13. Noticed Beau Hott is looking around. Wonder if the staff is trying to trim back the OL scholarships? At one point after the coaching change, he seemed like one of the most solid Beav commits.

    • Don’t worry.

Honestly, I was never sold on Hott. With Empey coming in and the announcement for a certain amount of OL, I’m thinking GA is thinking quality over quantity.

But can they do bear crawls?

      • Ftr… bear crawls and duck walks are the quickest ways for a coach to lose players. I never understood that part of the Riley mythology.

  14. With Empey visiting this weekend, and if Empey commits, that would mean OSU is signing 6 OL in this class. I don’t see that happening. Andersen wants to go the other direction in scholarship #’s concerning the OL. I can’t see them signing more than 4. So who doesn’t sign with OSU? Hott? Jimenez? Jimenez had an in-home with BYU last week. Hott seems to be interested in Houston and vice versa.

  15. Potential background pic for @BeavRecruiting?

    http://image.cdnllnwnl.xosnetwork.com/pics33/800/GE/GETPOSJRQSKMDJO.20141020225038.jpg

    Thumbs up/down?

If you have other suggestions, post them in this thread and we can vote on them.

Not sure if we should go for a more architectural theme, or football theme, or other? Would the image of the chainsaw coming onto the field be a turnoff for potential recruits?

Images that are in a landscape orientation work best since they need to stretch across the screen.

    • Nice, it will be good to have him (and Tuli Wily-Matagi) already committed on the visit. Gotta think having two guys already committed could help get the other guys on board as well.

    • Awesome. That’s odd since he just said he felt at home at Syracuse and would have to visit other places before swaying on that. I wonder what happened.

      • IIRC an article I posted on an earlier thread said he primarily committed to Syracuse because of a coach that is no longer there. I assume that coaches departure made his flipping much more likely.

        • yeah, we were talking about him the other day and how he had recently told a syracuse writer that he thought Jake Pickard was going to flip from Wisconsin to Syracuse too. Since then, things have obviously changed. Pickard has an Oregon offer, and recently received a Michigan offer. Also supposed to be visiting UofO next week while Davis is in Corvallis. Would have been another good get, but haven’t heard anything else regarding JP since then.

  16. I cannot remember when I have ever seen this much Beaver recruit activity. I remember looking at the list and wondering if we would get maybe one more before signing day. I remember watching the webcam when Brandin Cooks sent it his letter of intent. That has been the most excitement I have ever seen, but this is going to be amazing. I know, I know. I have had my expectations so low for so long.

    • I’m digging recruiting this year…

Other fans pissed because of flips.

Going after a better caliber of athlete.

      Who is this Oregon State?

        • exactly. Probably why Riley lost so many recruits because he backed off once they were committed elsewhere. Why would you do that? How many times did a kid flip to a different school after committed to Riley and OSU? No one else backs off and keeps recruiting. Nothing is set in stone until LOI day and it’s signed and faxed in. Until then, no one is untouchable.

  17. Not sure how to tweet this to @beavrecruiting but it might be a good retweet.

House shopping for mamma?? best feeling in the world! Made her a promise to take care of her one day!God has blessed me with the opportunity— Brandin Cooks (@brandincooks) January 21, 2015

  18. I’ve been contributing by way of just replying to tweets I find and adding @BeavRecruiting so whoever is on will notice and add information. And also hopefully bring attention to the handle by recruits and others that want to follow.

  19. I leave for 30minutes and miss the Davis flip! Flip like Flapjacks GA & Telly! Florida trip on the private jet has paid in Spades!!!

This Davis kid has seen his recruiting get bigger and bigger lately. I think the 2star is low on him, just based on his Considering list.

      • Here is his skill set

        Overall Traits

        Size-Strength-Speed
Good height with adequate bulk and needs to work to pack on some additional good mass. Flashes good playing strength and first-step quickness, but inconsistent.

        Versus the Run
Flashes ability to fire out with pad level and shoot hands and press blockers and shed. Inconsistent with hand usage though and doesn%u2019t consistently fire out and explode into blockers and give ground. Displays good lateral mobility to squeeze and be active down the line.

        Pass Rush Skills
Capable of quickly getting off the ball, though doesn’t display ability to just win with speed and displays some tightness and can struggle to bend the edge and doesn’t display great closing burst. Needs to further develop use of his hands. Good size and strength, but doesn’t display ability to transfer speed to power.

        Toughness/Motor
Looks to give good effort. Shows flashes in taking on blocks and tackling, but would like to see more consistency in his physicality. Has good straight-line speed though can struggle to quickly redirect.

        Bottom Line
Davis comes from a winning program that produces some good FBS talent and he possesses some good physical tools. Everything doesn’t yet look to be clicking though to allow him to maximize his strengths. We don’t see an immediate contributor, but has some ability to work with and for a mid-to-lower FBS program could develop into a productive defender in some time.

      • ^ posted that above, but no biggie.

He looks like a potential future NFL prospect to me (I’d have him as a high 3-star or low 4). Rivals has to be the worst rating service. They just go around to bumping Irvine up to 3-stars, which was so obvious to anyone who actually watched the tape. I’d be curious how they do their rankings….

        • I think Jack really outlined the problem with the star system the other day. The kids who start out higher and have better chances of increasing stars are the “football is life” kids who attend all of the 7 on 7’a and camps/combines available. Multi sport athletes or kids with other interests suffer.

I grew up playing soccer and it was the same thing: college scouts rarely goto high school games. If you wanted a chance at a college scholarship you have to play year round club ball and hope your team pays to play / travel to the big tournaments. I imagine bball is the same.

  20. Does anyone have the class as it was right before Riley left? It would be interesting to compare it to what the new staff has been able to pull so far.

    • At Wisconsin, 13 high school credits must be considered “core college preparatory” classes (four years of English, three years of math, three years of natural science and three years of social science). However, unlike other institutions, Wisconsin also requires an additional four electives, which can include foreign language, fine arts, computer science or other academic areas. That last addition very well could be the difference between landing some talented prospects with marginal coursework.

Nebraska requires 14 of those so-called “core” units, adding a fourth year of math. But the school only asks for two other units coming from a foreign language for a total of 16 academic course units. Ohio State’s minimum course unit requirement also is 16, while Michigan State’s is only 14.

At Wisconsin? That number is, at minimum, 17.

Oregon State, meanwhile, requires 15 units of academic courses for admission. Like Wisconsin, the same 13 core credits are needed, but only two additional credits for a foreign language are necessary.

From the report talked about in that article. Once you’re admitted, the standards to stay eligible are the same. So Wisconsin just wants you to have more HS credits in actual academic classes to be admitted.

      • Two extra years of Spanish, eh? That’s what separates the Wisconsins of the college world from dumb ol’ OSU and Oregon? All those idiot parrots kept on suggesting it was some huge academic prestige issue like they were an Ivy League school. Heck of a dairy program tho.

          • And while you sit there and giggle about how hard it is for these kids to take and pass an art class, consider your greed and withholding funds from schools and following bullshit “academic” plans created by morons who want to dumb down an already dumb population…

… and the fact that these kids probably can’t even take an art class or some other elective…

… because you don’t think paying taxes affects you in any way.

I would rather pay more than half my earnings in taxes and receive free health, insurance and all the other social services that once made our country the greatest on earth… not the laughing stock of a bully we now are.

I would do that because I currently pay more than half my gross pay for all that shit. And I fully expect another PTO fundraiser or “book drive” next week.

Good luck hiring people in the next 20 years. You’ll knw what I mean when I call idiot boy by his name… that being, idiot boy.

He’s lucky I don’t just cal him the murderer of hundreds of thousands of people, including four of my very good friends. He is a shit and as unpatriotic as one can be… except for Cheney.

    • Think about it this way.

We had what… six, seven periods during HS? Six multiplied by four is what?

If these kids are taking enough classes, what might they be taking instead of language?

PE isn’t required to get in? I wonder if it’s required to graduate from your pretentious school.

      No… I don’t.
