General Thread

Tomorrow I will put up a Utah and Baseball thread. For now let’s do a general thread.

What’s on my mind: baseball team looks worse than I expected. I figured growing pains, but Casey has put out four questionable lineups, took Luke H out way early when he was pitching well, bunted with 1 out, etc. I’d argue he has not put the team in the best position to win.

The Davey Moore situation is truly bizarre. He will likely wind up a 4-star dual-threat QB who can actually throw. On twitter, he seems like a good guy who was fairly humble and into OSU. Grades? At least tell the guy. By not responding GA has given the negative recruiters more ammo. They can now say, “look how he treats recruits–loves them one minute, ignores them the next. Do you want to play for a guy like that who can flip any moment?” yada yada. I’m sure there’s more to the story and all, but when a coach doesn’t handle something correctly those arguments open up. Call the guy and tell him what is up. Period.

  1. Hard to disagree with your comments about the Davey Moore situation.

Some tidbits about Victor Robbins in Connor’s piece yesterday:
-he is being evaluated “week to week”, but Connor doesn’t expect him to play in the “regular season”.
-he is not practicing with the team.

    • Moore also has said he plans to commit to a team in May, because he wanted to get it out of the way early. It’s nice to hear he still has OSU as a favorite, but sortof sounds like he wont be verballing to the Beavs at this point. He doesnt have a ton of quality offers yet, which is contra to what many recruiting sites were predicting. Do we really want to hitch our wagon to a guy whose best offer is from Illinois? Either way, gotta keep the kid in the loop, especially since they were telling him “you’re priority #1” for the past few months. Cant afford bad publicity in recruiting

      • Maybe Baldwin and McGiven aren’t as sold on Moore as GA was.

Moore was offered by GA about two weeks before Baldwin and McGiven were hired. Seth Collins was brought in right after. Maybe McGiven and Baldwin are really high on Collins.

I do think we need to be weary wary of GA. Strange that a kid could go from #1 target of 2016 to no contact in about a month. It doesn’t match with GA’s public persona.

        • Not sure it’s time to be “weary” of GA – too soon. Wary, perhaps. Canzano interviewed Davey Moore a while back. Impressive kid in an interview. Since Beav fb coaches can’t speak about recruits, I only hope they are aware of DM’s concerns and have contacted him. Far better to be told flat-out what’s going on than ignored.

        • I wondered, too, if they were just feeling better about Collins. Moore seems like a small guy. I’m the same height and weight as him and can only imagine getting crushed by some 300 pounder. Maybe he can run like a mofo, though. That I can’t do.

  2. I would argue that something had to of happened to cause the coaches to look at other candidates without telling Davey Moore. I think the fact that he had to go to the local media to try to ‘get in contact’ with the coaches instead of being patient and waiting for the coaches to contact him after just trying for a week is an indication he’s not that patient himself. it could be a test by the coaches to see how he handles certain situations like this in regards to attachment and if he’s needy. That’s all I got, but if it were a month or more of no contact, I could understand his concern, but 2-3 weeks doesn’t seem uncommon to me especially so early in the recruiting process.

It also seems that recruiting other players in that position is normal…considering putting your eggs in 1 basket is generally always a bad idea and if they’re offering guys ranked higher in stars and what not, then I can understand being slighted a bit, but at the same time, high caliber players doesn’t mean that they will eventually sign with the team either…idk just spit balling.

    • When the guy is trying to get in contact, you respond.

its a 10 second text to say “hey, thanks for checking in, glad you still want to be a Beav! We are busy with some other non recruiting team oriented activities and we will give you a call very soon and here is Brennon’s new number”

        • yeah and not taking the 2 minutes to tell someone thanks for interviewing but we hired someone else is a shit way to run a company. Only reason it works now is because it is such an employer job market. People don’t forget being treated like crap. Not that I know much about Moore’s particular situation, just speaking in general.

          • This is true in job interviews and bids. Calls asking to be informed should be informative. If that’s not the case, withdrawal of a bid is easily a consideration.

Then again… there will be a difference between who GA recruits and who Bike Smiley recruited. We aren’t used to kids who aren’t desperate for a Power 5 (or even any D1) offer.

We can go hang out on HuskerMax and feel like the Beavs of old. Or we can just see how year one plays out.

Then it’s all fair game. And I will be on board any and all criticisms at that point.

          • Hiring managers are instructed not to call back candidates as they may say something inappropriate leading the candidate to potentially sue. My wife is in HR for a publicly traded company and it happens more than you know

          • While, never to me. I’ve only not gotten 2 jobs I interviewed for and in both cases I received a call. I am a teacher and those 2 jobs related to teaching so maybe its different than the public sector.

Either way, how is saying “we went with another candidate” ever gonna lead to a lawsuit and that is all that needs to be said.

          • Many of my jobs are online anyway. So I already know the status of them by going to look at any particular site. There are some private jobs where they are just flakes and don’t have the courtesy to keep in touch. And almost to a tee they are nightmare jobs in the end, according to the trades and vendors I talk to.

I would never dream of accepting/scheduling one job and not telling any outstanding bids about any possible schedule conflicts or delays. That’s just common business sense.

    • Most of these recruits grew up with instant communication that is available 24/7 being the norm. I think dropping out of communication for weeks would open you up to losing the recruiting relationship with these kids.

He also wanted to commit by this May and GA said Moore was his #1 target. The coaches had to have decided to not target the guy anymore, but not telling him and outright ignoring him is pretty ridiculous.

That said, that staff can’t ever address this issue since it would be a recruiting violation. It could be that Moore is a drama magnet and is just trying to hurt the coaches that decided to drop his recruitment.

      • I doubt the last sentence is true since Moore says he hopes they get in touch with him and still like the Beavs. I guess we will never know unless they reopen his recruitment and it turns out they were just busy. Still, 20 seconds to text him back doesn’t take much effort even if they are busy with other things.

        • One text will lead to more and more texts. The coaches may feel like they want to spend time elsewhere but want to keep Moore as a backup option for now. And it’s still early. If the coaches feel like they have a shot with others they like better and Moore wants to commit by May, it could scare off the other targets if he committed. And even if he commits somewhere else, other schools have 9 months to change his mind.

  3. maybe it’s his attitude and character that has turned this coaching staff away from him? Do we know that he ACTUALLY did reach out to the coaching staff or is he just blowing smoke? Complaining about OSU offering other qb’s? Sorry, I wasn’t aware that GA and staff were only supposed to recruit YOU and not any other qb’s. What happens if Moore decides last minute to go elsewhere? Sorry, but from how he comes off in that article, totally fine with me if he goes elsewhere.

  4. I would guess that the staff is in the process of evaluating other options and hasnt decided how high to value Moore. If a tweet is all he needs to be happy, the coaches could hire someone to respond with meaningless bull, when he tweets. Frankly, I think this is bullshit, as in he is a moron who thinks tweeting is the only means of communication. Has he tried calling the athletic dept and insisting on speaking to a coach?

One thing, this dude is not very secure — a week or more with no response, and he runs to the media to complain. Tries to use the media to leverage his standing. They should drop him now, if the silence was even just a mistake.

    • You’re completely off base here. He never talked about “tweeting” anybody, and he didn’t run to the media to complain. Andrew Nemec reached out to him for an interview, and he answered Nemec’s questions. In his answers, he mentioned that he’s stopped hearing from the coaches. (meaning they’re not calling him or texting him anymore, when this used to be a daily occurrence earlier in the recruiting process)

Calling him a “moron who thinks tweeting is the only means of communication” is not only incorrect, but also moronic.

        • Ok…. so he is just effing stupid? He knows what he is doing, saying what he said to the media –whether they approached him or he approached them. If they didnt know he was getting no replies, then they didnt directly ask him about that — he brought it up. And the Q still stands, what did he do to query the athletic dept?

  5. “There’s 3 sides to every story. Yours, mine and the truth”

We have one side of the story here. But what I will say is the only thing Moore should have said is I haven’t heard from the OSU coaching staff recently. And left it at that. It was the continuation that made him sound like an attention whore. But again, that’s just my opinion. I’m unsure OSU coaches can even make a statement about this.

However, i trust GA and his staff. if they’ve decided to cool on Moore and look elsewhere for whatever reason? Cool. Let’s not abandon ship and jump their shit before they’ve even coached a fucking spring practice here. Dick douchebag’s mission was accomplished by contacting Moore, Moore taking the bait and another garbage article from a bitch boy reporter whose articles are only worth lining the cat shit gravel box with doing everything he can to trash Oregon St. Why are almost all duck fans the most obnoxious, look at me! uninformed, moronic fans on the face of the earth?

  6. Doesn’t it seem like GA and staff are saying that Seth Collins is the better fit (for whatever reasons). I mean you can only play one QB at a time. One of these guys is going to spend time on the bench unless there are injuries.

  7. Nebraska has SOLD about 40,000 tickets to their spring game on April 11th…that’s $400,000 folks!! Those fans will be scratching their heads asking why the players aren’t lining up on the sidelines and playing against each other instead of doing a controlled scrimmage with a running clock.

  8. Gina posted that Isaac Seumalo wont be participating in Spring practice to rest that injured foot. What are the chances we see him on opening day next year? Not very encouraging that he’s essentially in the same place he was a year ago. I feel bad for the guy. His career depends on that foot
