Home Football QB Situation

QB Situation

312

By all accounts (readers here who attend practice, official media, and Gary Andersen himself), the Beavs do not have a QB who can throw the ball well. Or, maybe I should clarify: one who can get the ball to the WRs.

The Beavs have two options:

1. Play Seth Collins and just go with a running QB and hope for the best.

2. Try someone else.

I know some troll was laughing because I like McMaryion, but he could throw accurately in high school. It’s not so much that I like him, either, it’s just that the other options weren’t great, and that’s panning out. Maybe McMaryion had issues with the mental side of the game, because GA stressed the importance of that. Physically he looks good.

Out of the three Nick Mitchell seems the most balanced, but I don’t think he can throw a good deep ball, so you’re relegated to bubble screens and short passes, which makes life easy for a defense. Del Rio has a good arm, but no accuracy or consistency. Collins looked like a very poor passer on tape, but that was a year ago, and we don’t know where he’s at now. But assuming he’s still poor, that leaves Mitchell that best option, but not a good one.

By going with any of the 3 QBs who are in the mix, the Beavs neutralize their strongest position, which is WR. Personally, I’m not excited about any of these three at this point, and I’d have given Kempt and McMaryion a shot. Sounds like they didn’t really get shots. Question is why? Just because of numbers and a quick need to reduce them? Or were they thoroughly analyzed? With practices being closed, it’s hard to get information on things like that. Even those who attend have only seen a few so the sample is too small.

It seems like Andersen wants to find reasons to start his guy, Collins. If that’s the case, I can already envision a lot of complaints about the passing game. Actually, I can envision that no matter which of these three guys starts. Mitchell seems like the best all around option, but his funky footwork is a problem, and his lack of a deep ball will put the offense in a box. Del Rio couldn’t hit a barn door, as they say, and makes risky passes.

We haven’t had an in-depth discussion about the QB situation because we were waiting for the list to be whittled down. Now that that’s happened, it’s become clear it’s a pretty scary situation. In GA we trust?

    • Finally watched this Mitchel video. Didn’t think he sound nearly as nervous as the Blitz interviewer. Reminds me of that Chris Farley character when he’s interviewing celebrities.
“do you remember that time you ran the ball in for a touchdown?……that was awesome….”

  1. I liked Kempt from the start; too bad he’s gone. He seemed to have a combination of throwing skills and athleticism, but from the spring practice highlights, he couldn’t complete any passes.

The good news is that, when you have a mobile QB, they can afford to be less accurate because the defense has to account for the running game, which gives receivers a bigger cushion.

  2. I envision a lot of people complaining about bubble screens from people that don’t realize it’s a fundamental play in a spread offense. There will be bubbles. Lots of bubbles.

  3. I think any of these guys will be capable of passing well enough our new offense. Not having been able to watch any practices, I’d guess Collins will end up being the guy for this year because of his athleticism.

With a spread offense like the one Andersen/Baldwin ran at Utah State you don’t need a great passer like we’ve had at OSU in past years. Matt Moore, DA, Canfield, and Mannion will have all been on NFL rosters for at least a few seasons. Moore and DA obviously had more success in the NFL than Canfield, but he still was drafted and on a team for a while. You don’t need that kind of arm talent for what we’re going to be running now.

Look at Oregon’s QBs. Since Chip Kelly came in Mariota is the first time they’ve been primarily a passing team.

In the past they had success with Masoli and Darren Thomas. Thomas can’t even break the starting lineup for Portland’s arena football team so that shows you how amazing a talent he was as a more traditional QB.

My point is this new offense makes QB almost an entirely different position to evaluate for. The offense is designed to make guys wide open and to make limited reads for the QBs. As long as you can get it in the general area that’s usually good enough.

    • And Justin Roper ran that offense, but from everything we’ve heard GA doesn’t run the same offense as the Ducks. And I am not convinced Collins can pass as well as Masoli or Thomas. They don’t need an NFL arm, but they need a guy who can complete bubble screens, and from the sound of things, they don’t even have that.

It’s also making the defense look great, by all accounts. That’s probably because they don’t have to worry about getting beaten deep.

      • Justin Goat Roper only ran that offense in the civil war game and bowl game. By that time UO was down to it’s 3rd or 4th QB due to injury. Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf were both hurt in the previous games. I thought Cody Kempt may have played as well but I could be wrong

    • One of Thomas’ indoor coaches said that his footwork was unbelievably atrocious when he first came aboard, makes me wonder if it is the system and not the QB with Oregon.

      • it’s the system. Which is why no UO qb drafted since 2007 has been worth two shits in the NFL. I expect Mariota will follow suit. I would not draft either him or Jameis Winston.

        • Just based on pure talent, Winston is gonna be a top flight QB in the league. Only when you consider off the field antics would you be hesitant. But he makes progressions, has a great arm, and makes good decisions on the field generally (although this year those picks were aplenty).

          • Very funny.

Young: poor work ethic, terrible with money, relied on legs a ton
Manziel: small, couldn’t even make throws
Russell: tricked people with his huge arm, fat

Winston actually had to be a great traditional QB at all times during his tenure. Reads, throws into tight windows, game management. His skill set translates very well to the pro ranks because while adequately athletic, he didn’t really strike fear into defenses with his legs. FSU didn’t run a spread type of offense really where guys were just wide open. The three guys you named and Mariota all played in more spread or option type offenses anyway.

Why’d you even bring Winston into this discussion in the first place?

          • because I think he will be an NFL bust. Just like all of the other running OB’s so far. The exceptions have been Russel Wilson and Colin Kaepernick. However it appears something is amiss with the latter. I look at it this way. If I want a franchise QB to build a future around, who do I draft. I don’t think the answer is ANY of the QB’s in this years draft. However If I were to take a gamble on a QB in this years draft? I’d take Connor Halliday. But not in the first few rounds.

Do any of these guys look like a guy to build an offense around?

            http://www.drafttek.com/2015-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Rankings/Top-QBs.asp

The only QB to come out of college lately that was taken as a high draft pick and lived up to his billing so far? Dude from Stanford named Andrew Luck (number 1 in 2012). I think most of the so called experts had him as a “can’t miss” draft pick. I don’t see any “can’t miss” QB’s in this years draft.

          • Only runs when stealing crab legs. 4.2 electronically timed from the seafood cooler to the alarm trigger on the front door. He can motor when motivated.

          • “That he was even in Indianapolis was both something of a victory for Halliday and an indictment of the 2015 quarterback class, regarded by most analysts as among the shallowest in recent memory.”

Looks like most of the so called “experts” don’t think too highly of this years QB’s available to draft either. If Mariota and Winston are the top two “prospects” in this years class, I wouldn’t waste a first round pick on either of them.

            http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/wsu-cougar-football/cougars-quarterback-connor-halliday-still-recovering-from-injury-eyes-nfl-draft/

  4. Last year, Collins was a part time qb. I believe that there was another qb on his team that had more passing yards, hence the skewed statistics

  5. Somewhere Autzen Kafentzus is kicking himself for passing up a potential freshman starting job while he battles for playing time now in a system that doesnt fit his skills.

  6. I wish we could get some video from practicing showing the QBs…their entire day of drills. At that point we’d know who’s the best option. But we see bits and pieces. It’s hard to put the puzzle together. Personally I’m not confident any of these 3 can consistently pass the ball.

This is more a concern for fall camp. A lot can happen between now and then, but I was hoping for more promising updates, yet every report about QB play is negative.

  7. McMaryion is still on the roster as a QB. Collins has been given a fair shot at it (to satisfy a recruiting promise perhaps?).

I’d like to see Collins RS and McMaryion move up. I say that because very few QBs right out of high school are ready for Pac-12 play.

    Time will tell.

  8. I either read on OregonLive or heard it on their Beaver podcast that McMaryion was told that he needed to make some pretty major mechanical adjustments, fwiw. Didn’t rule out him back in the mix in the fall. Maybe just coach-speak to keep him happy as the #4 qb. I liked his HS film quite a bit too.

  9. From what I’ve seen so far, it seems clear that none of the QBs are ready yet to run GA’s offense against PAC-12 defenses.

Del Rio has the strongest arm and throws the prettiest spirals, but in scrimmages and also in drills Del Rio is not consistently accurate. Del Rio exhibits toughness as a runner, but limited foot speed and evasiveness. Del Rio projects confidence and leadership, but his play doesn’t always back that up.

Collins is by far the best runner among the QBs (Collins is both fast and shifty), and he often looks good throwing shorter passes, whether from the pocket or on the run. Collins, however, seems to have serious problems getting the ball to open WRs on long, downfield passes — his long passes wobble, and are frequently short — dying quails that are asking to get intercepted. And, watching Collins on the sideline and seeing Collins interact with teammates and coaches, he still looks and acts like what he is — a kid just out of high school.

Mitchell throws a better downfield pass than Collins, and runs better than Del Rio. Mitchell also may be a bit more accurate with his throws than Del Rio. But Mitchell seems less mature overall than Del Rio, and makes the kinds of bad decisions that often come with inexperience (e.g., throwing into double coverage downfield).

Meanwhile, none of these guys did a good job on Saturday of getting the signals from the sideline and running GA’s offense in a timely and efficient manner. On several occasions, GA threw his hands in the air and yelled “Timeout” to give the offense more time to figure out what it was doing. Ugly stuff.

GA has suggested that he wants to come out of spring practice with a clear #1 QB. I’m guessing that GA would like that guy to be Collins (who likely has a bigger upside — long term — than Del Rio or Mitchell). But anyone who watched Saturday’s scrimmage would be seriously concerned by Collins’ current inability to get the ball to WRs on downfield passes. I agree with Angry that Collins could benefit greatly from a RS year to get stronger, and to work on his mechanics. But GA may not feel he has that luxury at the moment (given that Del Rio and Mitchell are not ready for prime time either).

McMaryion may indeed still have a shot. Vanderveen must be shaking his head after watching Saturday’s scrimmage (along the lines of “I can’t believe GA chose those guys over me….”). As Angry says, a lot can happen between now and the Fall. I’m sure GA is worried — and I think he is right to be so. I’m guessing that this is not going quite the way GA wanted or expected so far….

    • Have you seen McMaryion play at all during the practices? Did he look mechanically unsound? On film he has a good arm, some wheels, and we know he had a high GPA in high school. Again, given how bad the 3 chosen ones seem to be performing, why not give someone else a shot. Is this stubbornness where they picked 3 and don’t want to rock the ship? If you pick the three you think are best, yet none perform, maybe it’s time to look elsewhere. I’d like to see VanderVeen and McMaryion get a shot. Some guys perform better in games/scrimmages, etc than drills. Narrowing it down to 3 QBs after a few days of drills was maybe not the best decision.

From everything I have seen on these guy’s film and limited practice film along with writeups, Mitchell seems the most balanced, and Collins seems to have the most upside. I remember when Collins signed the first thing I wrote was how bad a thrower he was. Personally, I can’t see him being a QB. I can see him having a wildcat package and running, but not a starting QB. Del Rio’s arm is out of control. I think some are enamored with him because he can throw the ball hard and far, but that doesn’t make a good QB. Out of all the candidates, I’m most surprised he’s in the mix. He throws good deep balls in those videos we all saw, but not to running WRs. Something seems to breakdown with his hand/eye coordination once objects are moving. Gun to my head I’d start Mitchell, but I’d seriously try to coach up McMaryion by Fall and have him the 3rd option.

  10. It’s a good thing we have college football’s best QB coach rather than Langsdorf this year. Hoping McGiven is as good as advertised.
Still tough to judge this year when the cupboard, while not totally bare, was stocked with low quality options. Collins was even a last minute addition that they stole from that powerhouse San Jose State.

  11. In the early Spring scrimmage, McMaryion and Mitchell seemed like the guys who provided the best balance of throwing and running. It was a limited data set, but I didn’t see a big difference between McMaryion and Mitchell at that time. Of course, at that time there were seven (!) QBs splitting reps, so no one got a whole lot of time to separate himself from the others.

GA felt the need to limit the reps to three QBs as quickly as possible, and probably — in consultation with QB Coach McGiven — chose Mitchell as the “balance” guy, to compete with Del Rio (more a thrower) and Collins (more a runner). McMaryion, as the other “balance” guy, lost out in the numbers game.

Now, with the clock ticking, GA does not want to take a step backward and add McMaryion back into the competition (requiring 4 QBs to split reps), much less add back Vanderveen (5 QB’s splitting reps). GA is also probably a bit stubborn, and doesn’t want to appear indecisive, or to be seen as second-guessing himself.

Yes, behind the scenes, GA may ask QB Coach McGiven try to coach up McMaryion by Fall and have him available as an additional option, as you say. But I don’t think that’s something that GA is likely to broadcast right now (for the reasons given above).

My guess is that GA’s main focus at the moment is going to be on Seth Collins. Much will depend — I suspect — on McGiven’s assessment of Collins, and whether Collins can be sufficiently coached-up between now and the Fall to do a better job of downfield passing, decision-making, and field generalship. If McGiven is optimistic about coaching-up Collins in these areas, I suspect that’s going to be the top priority for the next few months.

    • I never saw any footage of Vanderveen other than last year’s backup qb competition under Riley/Garrett.

How lead footed is he? I read somewhere that he was a decent basketball player so he should have some sort of agility. Not that he’s any kind of sprinter but at least the guy has some passing ability.

  12. Regarding the QB situation and GA. The spring of his second and last year in Madison, he made a concerted effort to get a running QB into the mix at the expense of the previous years starter, Joel Stave.
The players seemed to gravitate to Stave and all the reports coming out of the fall camp was that the anointed starter, Tanner McEvoy, couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn. If anybody watched their opening game against LSU, you saw how his inability to throw cost them the game. That started the dialogue about Stave having an injury, then the yips, then who knows? GA seemed to be making shit up to back up a poor decision that he stubbornly stuck to. That has been the one concern I’ve had with him. He may force feed things without having the right players to run his system. Time will tell.

    • That’s not good, and that’s what a lot of us are sensing: that he wants to start Collins… and maybe even find a reason to do so.

      • Man he’d be crazy to start that kid this year. He needs to add size and experience. If he’s the future at qb don’t send him out to get hurt before he even has a chance to win.

I have always had the feeling that Del Rio has been in the mix because of pressure from his father. He didn’t look particularly good last year when he “beat out” Vanderveen for the backup spot and it continues this year.

I wonder if it would benefit the offense to run 3 separate scrimmages, each with one of the qb prospects playing the entire time. Really let each kid get his legs under him for a while.

    • Andersen was never a good fit in Madison. He wants to run his offense. Alvarez said you’re going to run mine. Think Wisky fans who are used to 3 yards and a cloud of dust wanted to see the spread being run?

  13. Geez, I hope we’re not getting a skewed view of the defense also, maybe they are looking so good because the offense is shit right now! I watched a lot Utah St. football and I don’t remember Keeton going long that often, maybe it won’t be a huge deal. I doubt they have to hit a deep 25 yard crossing route in this offense.. I’m excited to see a QB take off for a 20 yard gain instead of getting sacked.

    • I just assume the D looks good because the offense is terrible. We know the defense needed work, so that seems logical.

Every offense needs to hit 25 yard passes (e.g. a 2 minute drill, which unlike Riley’s offense, I’m sure these guys have).

One positive is Villamin is a guy who can go up and grab a bad or so-so throw. It’ll help.

  14. I’ve had this thought, don’t know if others have…but maybe Andersen knows the talent left behind by Riley is not very good and this is going to be a challenging/lost season, might as well play Collins and other “Andersen guys” and get them started in the system now.

  15. The spring game will tell us a lot for who is going to be the QB. The practice reports seem to be up and down. I’m expecting a real game with a lot of live hitting and the QB’s are fair game since they will run.

Sounds like Del Rio’s accuracy issues are with running a spread offense and throwing on the run. His accuracy is probably a lot better in a drop back offense.

I’ve said it a few times, and I still think Collins would benefit mightily from a redshirt year. He needs to be playing at over 200pds to take the hits he’ll take. The extra weight will also help his arm strength.

    • holy crap. Hudl lists his weight at 171. Chuckie Keeton is at 200 and Mariota 220. I’d say he needs to put on 30 pounds. You may be right. He may benefit from a redshirt year to bulk up.

        • Speaking of twigs: Derrick Bruce – 165#. I remember when skinny Jared Cunningham would get thrown around during games. The conspiracy theory was that the refs didn’t respect CR or the Beavs so they often didn’t call some, even egregious, fouls.

      • He’s already put on 15 from senior year. By the time the season rolls around, he’ll be 195 I bet. Still a ways to go, but that’s a decent start for a true freshman.

  16. Angry, nobody cares about McMaryion’s high school tape. All the QB’s are learning a new offense. Growing pains are gonna be there. Did you ever think this might just be Coach speak? He doesn’t want McMaryion or anyone to give up, and he doesn’t want Del Rio or Collins to get comfortable

  17. I’m not sure why we’re worried about this. It’s likely we’ll burn through at least four-plus QBs during next season anyway.

  18. Regarding QB play overall. Why can’t guys throw anymore?
Michigan had their spring game Sat. and a couple of buddies who watched it said their QB’s looked awful. Captain Comeback will have his work cut out for him at that position. He is getting the former starter at Iowa as a fifth year transfer and he may end up as the starter.

  19. This isn’t the NFL. QBs at the college level don’t need to have exceptional arm strength with the ability to throw the deep ball consistently to be winners at this level (see Tebow at Florida and Moore at Boise State; heck even Canfield at Oregon State got by with being able to hit the short and intermediate routes with a high degree of accuracy). While it is a nice weapon to have, it isn’t absolutely essential for the offense to be successful in college. As long as we have a QB that is mobile enough to be a legitimate threat in the option and can get the ball out quickly and accurately to his playmakers in space, the offense will be fine.

    • All of those qbs had strong rushing offenses that took the pressure off the qbs to make down field throws. That won’t be the case for the beavs qb this year.

      • I think that remains to be seen. Storm Woods was effective last season, he averaged 6.3 YPC even with an inexperienced line that was overmatched at times. I’m not sure I fault him for not getting enough carries, Riley was stuck on throwing it 45 times a game.

  20. Passing is over rated and unnecessary. Pitch left run out of bounds for no gain, pitch right lose five yards, quarterback keeper for eight. Punt on 4th and seven. Hand it over to the defense. Maybe kick a field goal or two. Worked for me! (Well not really) JB

  21. For Silverstream:
How has the O line looked and which guys are the first team linemen?
Do you think Sanders will make it at TE? If I remember correctly, you said he was a good athlete but somewhat injury prone.

    • Beavergopher: From what I recall seeing on Saturday at the scrimmage, the first team offensive tackles were Sean Harlow and Dustin Stanton, the guards were Fred Lauina and Gavin Andrews, and the center was Josh Mitchell. I wasn’t focusing on the O-line last Saturday, but the running backs weren’t making many big gains, and the QBs seemed to be under pressure quite often, so it’s probably a fair assumption that the O-line was having its problems, too.

Regarding Tanner Sanders, I spoke recently with a reliable and well-connected source. TS came into spring practice at around 200 lbs. TS and the coaches believe that TS will need to bulk up to around 230 lbs to be effective at TE (he has already sustained a minor injury to his wrist while blocking in the trenches, and had his wrist wrapped for the Saturday scrimmage). TS has been hitting the weights and the training table hard, and has already added 8 lbs — he is hoping to be at or near 230 lbs this Fall. At that weight, I think Sanders could be effective as a pass-catching TE for OSU, or as a possession-type WR (along the lines of Mullaney). The extra size and strength might also help TS avoid future injuries (injuries were a big problem for TS in HS, but not in college so far….)

The source added that Coach Tinkle has also asked TS to come back next to play basketball for OSU. Tinkle has talked with TS about his plans, and believes the extra weight and strength would make TS a more effective basketball player for OSU if TS wants to pursue basketball at the college level.

In addition, Coach Casey is still interested in TS playing baseball for OSU, and TS is still keeping that option open. Having watched TS play all three sports in HS, often with and against my own kids, I continue to believe that baseball is probably Tanner’s best sport, and that he has real talent as a hitter (including a lot of pop in his bat). I would love to see TS — at 230 lbs — take some swings against PAC-12 pitching and see how he does (given that TS was hitting 380 foot home runs as a HS senior when he was 35 lbs lighter and significantly less developed).

There aren’t that many guys who have the talent to play football, basketball, and baseball at OSU. By any measure, Tanner is a good athlete. However, my personal view is that TS needs to choose just one sport and stick with it, full time. Personally, I’m hoping he gives baseball a shot next year. My two cents….

  22. I’d rather stand in and be cut down in a hail of gunfire than see this Collins kid gets the job right away!!

By all accounts he is a redshirt/ scout team project at best for this season. What does this fact that he is even in the discussion do for the confidence of Del Rio and the other turds (apparently)?

    • Happy my ass. I’m ecstatic!
The really beautiful thing was the dagger was the MN kid, Tyus Jones. They built him up around here since he was seventh grader. Guess he really was that good. Super kid to boot.
I hope I never have to cheer for Duke again.

        • I told you guys Bo was a dick.
          20m20 minutes ago
          Trent Dilfer ?@TDESPN
Bo Ryan’s post game interview made me sick to my stomach. #Whiner Sports are physical, quit blaming the refs. You got EVERY call vs Kentucky

        • well, not that I give two shits, but he does have somewhat of an argument. Duke shot twice as many FT’s (Duke-20 FTA, Wisky -10) and made 10 more foul shots. There’s your ball game.I know some were in the last minute.

          • In the last ten minutes, there were five blown calls/no-calls that all went Duke’s way… not including the OOB call that was actually replayed. I thought the live call was correct until the announcers keyed in on the deflection from their tiny sideline monitors… the same monitors the refs use. That also doesn’t count the same calls that should have been no-calls and went Duke’s way but were not even blown on the other end when Duke committed the same supposed fouls. There were two others where no replay was shown but looked questionable in live play. It was a very poorly called game in crunch time.

Some people say, “let the players play.” That’s what the refs did for one team but not the other.

          • And I was cheering for Duke. It was noticeable at about 10:00 that the calls started becoming inconsistent and going one way.

          • Wisconsin had a golden opportunity with a 9 pt 2nd half lead and Okafor and Winslow in foul trouble. If they could have found an answer for Grayson Allen, they would have won in a blowout. The refs didn’t give Allen any favors and he dominated for a stretch. Not bad for a guy who barely got to play this year and only saw the court after Duke cut Rapist Sulaiman from the team.

          • Allen got mucho favors from the refs. Wiscy couldn’t hand check and bump. Duke could. Wiscy couldn’t wave their arms at shots without a foul being called. Duke could whack a head and nothing gets called. Allen drove the lane and stuck an obvious chicken wing in the defenders chest at the FT line before he got an and-one, not because he was fouled, but because he was so off balance that he fell and the ref just assumed he was fouled. A Wiscy big turns into the lane against a Duke defender and hits the D in the chest, pushing him back (something Duke’s bigs did all game), and his head snaps back… and the ref calls a charge.

            ?

Kaminsky took a great charge from Winslow and was thanked for it by getting a blocking charge and-one. And that was before the over-dramatized imitation of a Vlade Divac flop.

Jones jumps into the D for an and-one? That was pretty obviously a no-call at best, but should have technically been called on Jones.

You’re correct. They had a nine point lead with about 9:30 left and Okafor going to the bench with four fouls. That’s when the game completely went Duke’s way. And it wasn’t even close to not being obvious. The reviewed OOB play was just the icing on the cake. Something changed in the way the refs were calling the game. It was a tangible moment when the game just became a different game altogether than it had been for the 30 minutes prior to that.

Take a look at the sequence from about 3:45 to 3:15. Around this time, there’s a loose ball with Duke leading 59-58. Wiscy hits the ball, and a Dukie knocks it OOB. But the refs are all in poor positions and can’t see the final touch, and they call it out for Duke. No biggie. Those calls happen. It’s not under-2, so it’s not reviewable. Live with it. After the under-4 TO, Winslow drives the right side and the D forces him to the baseline… literally… obviously in live play… he just stepped on the baseline. Wtf? How does a ref not see that? Then he picks it up, spins on one foot and appears to take a couple hops (can’t say for sure since the cameras didn’t give an angle to possibly see daylight) before passing to Okafor, who spins and scores on an obvious holding foul by Kaminsky.

All the other BS calls were what killed the nine point lead. That sequence was pretty much the straw that broke Wiscy’s back. They kept fighting, but it was pretty clear the refs had doe eyes for Duke at that point.

It was at that point that I was yelling at the TV, and my wife asks me, “I thought you had money on Duke. Why are you yelling at the refs?”

That wasn’t a basketball game for the last ten minutes. It pretty much sucked. At least I didn’t lose money on it.

    • the good news for the Beavs is they have all of their remaining series with teams ahead of them in the standings at Goss (USC, Cal, Arizona). All of the road series are against teams below them in the standings (ducks, UW, Stanford). Throw in what should be a sweep of Utah at Goss and the beavs are in good shape. After this weekend, only road games are in Seattle and Bay Area. This team is good enough to make the field of 64 and should. I highly doubt they’ll be hosting though. Pac-12 is just too tough this year.

    • Yeah, the Stanford situation is a real head shaker. BTW, I notice D-1 has Angry’s Gauchos ranked #11 while the Anteaters are unranked eventhough they lead the Gauchos by 2.5 in the Big West.

Yes, I’m one of those who called UCSB “lower tier” and wanted a sweep. Prior to the series with the Beavs they played like lower tier; really turned it around.

Your analysis of the rest of the Beavs schedule is too logical; with this young team I expect some more surprises. But I agree with the outcome…a non-hosting place in the 64. Hopefully. A lot will depend on the bats of Hendrix, Harrison, Clark (since Casey seems intent on playing him), and maybe Ice and/or Lund. Even Cary could have an impact if Casey gives him some AB’s.

      • Not a big deal but they played Cal Poly not UCSB. They are in the same league about 90 miles away.from each other. Cal Poly was great last year, ranked number 1 for a few weeks, they have slipped a bit this year. JB

        • What really sucks is that Bloomquist flipped a switch against us. He’s been lights out against us, CSF and now UCSB for three weeks in a row. He was sucking eggs before that.

        • Thanks, JB. I’ll blame it on not enough caffeine.
I see UCSB has a rematch today with USC, on PAC12 Net. Lookin’ for a second win over the condoms.

    • Hmmm… it’s national beer day too? And no housework day?

So… if Beavers drink beer and do no housework, this apparently leads to world health day.

      • Good excuse to head down to the brewery and have a beer. Nate is putting out some quality brews down there. Even has an IPA that tastes like IPA instead of the winner of the bitter beer olympics like most IPA these days.

  23. From Gina’s report on today’s practice:

Marcus McMaryion, who previously had not gotten reps during 11-on-11 work open to the media since the quarterback race was reduced to three contenders, even got a handful of snaps.

  24. If Collins is the best then start him but if he is not the best it would be stupid to start him with the thought of developing him. If he can’t even separate himself from this group of QBs he wont be starting in 4 years anyway so what are you even developing him for?

    • Because the first couple years will be brutal on our QBs. And until we find the type who can run the system and take the punishment it doles out on the position, we will be stuck with that reality. There are plenty of good to great HS QBs who can run this system, but there are not many who can survive a whole season of it at the college level. And there are none who can do it at the NFL level.

The good news is we have a great mix of WRs who can run the bubble screens. There is a requirement for blocking (mostly holding) at that position. But what is left on our roster is a great mix of scat and big-bodied receivers with speed and agility. Players like Villamin, Mullaney, Gilmore and Guyton will need to learn to break players like Bolden, Hawkins, Dockery and Hunter to the second level on the sides.

Bubble screens are probably 60% or more of all the completions this O runs. I didn’t hear anyone complain about Mariota doing that when touting his accuracy. It’s just a glorified hand-off with fewer defenders between the ball-carrier and the end zone. The only knock is that speed can make the sideline work for them always. And that’s why it won’t work beyond a “gets me to the playoffs” level in the NFL unless they widen the field. I also don’t know why Ds don’t blow up the TE (when they’re actually tight) and hit the QB when he misdirects. Boise has had awesome success doing just that. But it seems like there’s some loser honor code about not countering that system by doing these completely legal counters… by everyone except Boise… who are not afraid to be cheap shots.

Then we will need a QB who can not only take the punishment and survive. He will also need to learn to be smarter than the average bear and start avoiding that punishment. And he can’t do it by laying out his receivers and backs for more injury fodder… which is the final step… still haven’t seen that kind of brilliance.

  25. A little OT, but the @BeavRecruiting twitter account has been a great addition by AngryBeavs. Whoever are the folks finding the recruiting info have been outstanding. I don’t think Rivals or Mama Machado even come close.

Many props to ya’ll. Keep it up!

    • It’s mostly beaverblazer. He’s making up for the fake keith kostel thing. But Beaverkman and I also update it here and there, too. I’m not sure if there’s anyone else.

      • Currently sitting at 562 followers. Pretty good following, but I think it will grow quite a bit more between now and the end of the current recruiting cycle. Thanks to those who retweet posts from that account. Helps get new Beaver fans to view it.

Curious is you’ve noticed an uptick in new readers on your site, Angry, as a result of adding the twitter handle?

      • I haven’t had the time to put into it. BeavBlazer has done a great job. I just try retweet stuff and hopefully he sees it and takes the lead on it. i will try to get more and more on it, once work settles down.

  26. Probably not worth looking into too deeply, but here is a quote from Storm Woods from the Oregonian the other day:

“In my mind, I’m like, OK, that’s me, Villy (Jordan Villamin), Vic (Victor Bolden), Chris (Brown), Seth (Collins), Nick (Mitchell),” Woods said following Saturday’s practice. “I just start calling names.

“I might be joking when I say that, but at the same time, hearing that and seeing the success they had (at Colorado State) and with our guys here, how hard we work … the sky’s the limit.”

No mention of Del Rio there. I’m not inclined to think this is him bashing or anything, but it probably does shed some light on what he’s seeing out there in terms of playmaking at QB.

  27. John Canzano (@johncanzanobft) tweeted at 2:23 PM on Wed, Apr 08, 2015:
Oregon State coach Gary Andersen said if Beavers played today… starter at QB would be freshman Seth Collins or freshman Nick Mitchell.

Jack Del Rio is gonna be PISSED!!

    • They should get Del Rio out of the mix asap. He clearly won’t start since he can’t run or throw to moving targets. I wish they’d put McMaryion in the mix instead of Del Rio. Maybe by Fall. This all feels like politics to please Jack Del Rio….

Del Rio seems like a cool guy, and he obviously has a good arm, but he is not efficient, and this offense requires an efficient passer more than a big arm.

      • wonder if he would be able to see the field at any other position? Really think we’re going to be going through this whole QB battle again next year with whoever they can pick up this offseason.

          • Along those lines, I saw GA’s early target, David Moore said he’ll have some news tonight. I know talk of he and the Beavs has cooled quite a bit over the last couple of months, with him even saying in an interview that the staff hasn’t been talking to him much lately, but I also see that he’s wearing OSU gear in his background pic.
You always read good things about the kid from camps he goes to, almost on a weekly basis, but his offer list still doesn’t blow me away. OSU is still his best offer. Wonder if they’re still interested in him considering GA told him he was OSU’s class of 2016 #1 target back in January?

          • He didn’t have that pic up this morning. I don’t know why, but I went to his twitter page just to see what was up. And just now I was wondering why you retweeted him… until I noticed the pic.

            Who knows? Could be coincidence.

          • probably so, and seeing the offer list, i’m not overly optimistic he would be the guy that takes us to the promised land anyway. They have offers out to 2-3 other QB’s currently too (Matt Fink who has picked up some pretty big offers lately, and I can’t remember the other guy)

Doubt Fink will end up here, especially with a USC offer that he seems thrilled to have.

          • Looked up the current offer list for QB. More than I thought, but some are offers Riley sent out early.

Jacob Eason- 5* (committed to Georgia)
KJ Costello- 4* (committed to Stanford)
Dwayne Haskins Jr. 4* (pro-style, also has offers from nearly every team out there)
Jalen Hurts 4* (Dual-threat, several offers but I could see Oregon State being in the mix)
Matt Fink 3* (Pro-style. I don’t see the Beavs making his short list)
            David Moore
Malik Neal (no star rating, Dual threat with only a Utah offer)

So looks like Hurts and Moore are the best bets for their realistic targets at this point for 2016.

          • Who’s Hirsch? Don’t remember seeing his name anywhere, but could have easily missed it considering how many offers they have out right now.

          • The kid who pummeled Bellevue in the state title game.

He’s off the radar because he won’t discuss offers, visits, etc. He’s just going to announce where he’ll go to school… one of these days. I wonder if he will also be a winter enrollee.

          • Isn’t he visiting Texas A&M? That’s a better offer, technically.

But anyway, Moore is a good runner and accurate passer. I’d say he’s better than anyone on the roster; I’d be thrilled to get him. He has a lot of big schools interested yet haven’t offered. I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the offer sheet.

          • All of that could be the reason OSU cooled on him. Maybe they felt he was settling and wanted other offers. I wouldn’t recruit him at that point, either, so I can’t blame them.

      • I read it as the competition is still open but those two are ahead at this point. To me it’s still pretty fluid and any of the three could take the job in fall camp. Plus I’d be wary of injuries so all three need to be ready to play.

Seems like they are leaning heavily to spread offense. Baldwin at CSU had a non-mobile QB in Garret Grayson who rarely ran. I would have thought because of that, Del Rio would be the guy.

  28. Won’t be surprised if Del Rio is outta here. Either that or his daddy gets him some specialized training over the summer months.

    • Didn’t Del Rio also start out with at least a little bit of promise at Bama and quickly work his way down the pecking order? I’m guessing Saban knew something pretty quickly. Bottom line to me is that he’s a pro style Riley recruit, don’t force him to be something he is not and move on. The Andersen era is not about this year, it’s about the future.

      • Nope. LDR was one of two walk-ons out of seven QBs on the roster, and he worked his way into a third string position. He never had to play, and he was probably technically fourth string since one of the frosh who redshirted would likely have been ahead of him.

But this “Del Rio gets special treatment because of this and that” conspiracy nuttery needs to stop. The kid is smart, likeable and has one live arm. Coaches will see that and think they can work with those talents and make him into what they want. If they spend an inordinate amount of time on the kid, it’s because of that and that alone.

          • I do know enough about life that you don’t bullshit someone who has a position of power in your industry and expect that someone to take that as a favor or anything but the actual bullshit it is. Would you look at someone bullshitting you and give them any consideration?

Being honest with LDR and his father are the only options that make sense. Most of the time, the simplest answer is the one that makes sense. LDR gets reps because his arm is that much better than anyone else on the team, and he has a good football head. Mitchell gets reps because he has a good blend of pocket awareness and mobility. Collins gets reps because he has great mobility and has run a similar system.

If LDR was efficient in the pocket, the feet wouldn’t be much of an issue. That he can’t do so makes it two strikes against him for now. GA has been honest about it, and that’s all anyone should or could ask of him. Is bullshitting JDR going to do him any good? Is it going to win more games? Will JDR start being a booster here instead of at USC? Will he pass on any OSU talent that would help him win on the pro level?

The conspiracy nuts say yes to all. I think there’s way too much at stake to act like a child when it comes to one’s profession. I’d be willing to bet you feel the same when you go to work, because that’s what I feel when I do. I don’t know why this doesn’t make simple sense to you all.

          • I see. Apparently people disagree with my idea that acting like a child in one’s professional life is poor work.

This does explain quite a bit… not that I haven’t seen it before… a lot… from the same people. The only difference is that I have seen it where +/- is not an anonymous thing. People on those forums spoke up against maturity and put their names on it. Then they voted for it. Then they complained about what they voted for.

At least I can use those forums to beat some whiny moron over the head about his failure to recognize his part in the “full faith and credit” part of monetary policy.

I guess cowards don’t speak to power. They just anonymously +/- the hell out of…or into life.

  29. OT: Baseball. D1 is out with it’s projected field of 64; Beavs a 2 seed in the Louisville Regional. Halfway through the season, probably not too soon for the paid professionals to voice their opinions, but still a lot of ball to be played.

    • He will have a great time. They average close to 6k for home matches and over 14k for the tilt with Iowa. The coach is the ultimate hard ass. He recruits good kids that are great students. Last year ended as a dud, but J Robinson’s squads have won three National championships and were 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd preceding last years disappointment.
LOL, love that the scholarships are sponsored by a personal injury attorney! Thanks for the info.

      • That attorney was a terrific wrestler as were his two sons – also attorneys in the firm. I only hope a kid from Sidney can manage the big stage.

        • Yeah… because kids from No-water, Iowa haven’t handled it in the past?

I think the Tyler Thomas thing was an outlier… that could only happen to us.

  30. Connor quotes Andersen as saying (to Canzano) that Collins and Mitchell are “1A and 1B”.

Also noteworthy, he now reports McMaryion “also received SEVERAL backup reps” on Saturday. This, after Gina characterized his reps Tuesday as “… a couple snaps”. With the limited press coverage under Andersen (an approach I like) it is probably not smart to over-analyze every printed report. Time will tell, but it does seem significant that McM wasn’t moved to another position as were the other “ex” QB’s.

  31. Del Rio is transferring. I kind of figured kept and Del Rio were both probable to transfer since they just don’t have the wheels.

    • You just can’t take a QB in either system and make them work in the other system. If LDR was Andrew Luck in terms of efficiency, GA would have changed the system before he would have changed the player. But that would have been the only QB I think would have forced the coach to do that.

I think we’re seeing the real reason GA left Wiscy. He finally has the freedom to implement what he wants on a Power 5 level. Square pegs are starting to leave, and the AD isn’t yelling at him over it.

  32. It’s a little funny seeing some of the reactions to the transfer news. Surprise and even shock? Wasn’t the writing pretty much being written on the wall if not already on it as of last Saturday?

    • Tim Euhus is saying this won’t be the last transfer due to the coaching change either, although I don’t think he’s speaking from an insider perspective, but rather saying “don’t be surprised if….”

I really like how the Kempt and LDR transfers open up a couple new scholarships for the Beavs to fill. Both kids will land on their feet, and it sucks they have to move again, but if they want to be mad at anybody, it probably should be Riley for pulling a fast one on them after encouraging both to transfer into his program.

    • With any coaching change, there’s always an increase in transfers. You just hope the ones who transfer aren’t difference makers. And just like my NCAA bracket, my pick is out.

With 3 QBs left, that’ll mean plenty of reps in the spring game. It’ll give us a good long look at Mitchell and Collins.

  33. *pats back*

Now we just need to hear Marcus McMaryion is seriously in the mix, which I expect shortly, if not by Fall. Remember angry@angry saying how wrong I was about that? lolz. He may have even said Del Rio would be the starter, but probably not – the dudes who hate me rarely commit anything to writing.

    Time is a great equalizer.

Good job by LDR to transfer. Seemed like a smart and good guy. He should just go to a low level school where he is guaranteed a job.

  34. Regarding the QB derby: The kid from Utah that we thought might follow GA and then stuck with his commitment to Wisky may regret that decision. Cryst had a Pitt commit follow him and do the early admit thing and apparently is killing it with his arm in their spring practices. in that offense mobility is way down the pecking order and he is already way behind a QB in the same class. Whoops!

  35. So… Moore visits UNC and probably thinks he’s going to get an offer from them (the news he might get last night?). But their target QB, Byrd, commits (tweet about news comes down).

DM is in College Station today and will talk with Sumlin. Do we think aTm is gonna get a commit from their top QB target in the next couple days?

  36. How soon till the Del Rio to Neb. rumor starts? He should try to spend one year at a school in all five of the power 5 conferences. Two down and three to go.

    • He’d have to sit out a year. He’s pretty much got to go JUCO for one season or FCS for at least 2 and hope to graduate so he can transfer anywhere he wants. That’s tough to do if you keep moving around.

  37. Who was it on the site that said that they knew Nate Pomeday? Pitino Jr lost his top asst. to the head coaching gig at E. KY. And that is a school and not a personal lubricant WSS.
How much of the cluster for the CR is he on the hook for? He is the DOB ops here and there is a rumor that he will get promoted up to a regular asst. Thoughts on him?

    • He’s connected in Chicago and with all the AAU programs in the Midwest. So from a recruiting standpoint, getting him out on the road is of value. Pitino will run his scheme, and all assistants will abide. So it’s not like Minnie will suddenly be running some variation of some variation of the back door offense. Pomeday will take on Pitino’s attributes and use all the same language if he becomes an assistant.

      • Oh… he’s also big on the connection to Senegal. The program there that Gomis and N’diaye and a bunch of other kids on rosters now came from was either started by him, or he was one of the major contributors to its start-up.

        • We have two of those projects already. They look good running out on the court, but as soon as they touch the ball……..not so much. They hack more than Lizzie Borden and are not used to playing D with their feet.

      • Just for a comparison, Stewart was just hired as an assistant by Mussellman at Nevada. I completely trust Mussellman’s valuation of coaches (he did ditch Sendek). And if I were a Minnie fan I would also trust Pitino’s valuation of Pomeday were he to move him up.

I think it’s pretty clear CR had good sense in hiring assistants with where they all ended up. What was lacking was his overall vision and system implementation (or lack thereof). And if you consider the conspiracy dumbness of how “connections” make for better recruiting, then you can fly high on that angle.

    • I think it’s a great hire. I don’t know if he sticks around on the west side for long. But he has shown that he is more than a capable coach who won’t just rely on his Coach K connection.

It’s hard to tell since they’re both so green, but I think his brother will end up being the better coach in the end.

And it will be weird watching ASU play with sound fundamentals for the first time since Wulk left.

      • Terrible hire as he has two years of head coaching experience. You’d think being in the Pac-12 they could have more quality candidates with quite a bit more experience. But I also don’t think they should have fired Sendek either.

        • Are you smoking crack while on shrooms?

Shouldn’t have fired Sendek? He was CR without a plan… for years. If he doesn’t get one giant star, he’s canned four years ago. And that would have been late.

Hurley will have ASU in the top half of the league every year after next year. If you watch Buffalo, you will see what I mean.

          • Upper half of the league huh? Kind of like what Sendek did 6 out of 9 years in Tempe? Guess I must be on crack

          • Many of them down years as well. If not for one NBA MVP caliber player and another Prop 48 we couldn’t reel in, he’s got last year. And only translating two of those six years into NCAA appearances pretty much speaks to that reality. His brand of ball is not good without star players. And it doesn’t help when half the team transfers every year. He was at best a mediocre coach and simply not a good recruiter. He isn’t a terrible coach either. I think he’s only one of a handful who have .500+ records there. But .500+ was close to his ceiling.

I do think ASU was lucky if the rumors of Capel turning them down are true. That would have been a disaster.

          • Your claims of Sendek being CR without a plan are ridiculous. 6 out of 9 years in Tempe he had ASU in either the NCAA tournament or NIT. CR could do no better than the CBI at OSU. Sendek > CR

          • By plan I mean building what he inherited and leaving it better than when he left. He didn’t do that. Yes, results for him were better. But how do we think CR would have done with a team that had Harden, Pendergraph and many pretty good upper class players? Sendek couldn’t get over the hump with them, his only ranked team. Only three times in those 9 seasons did he have a winning conference record. He backed into the NCAA Tourney last year… the tourney appearance being the fourth loss in a row if you include his last two conference games (one against CR) and the Pac Tourney.

He’s good at being mediocre, even with transcendent players on his roster. And he just about burned up all connections with all those transfers. It’s not like those kids were transferring because they thought Sendek was a meanie (he’s not). He would simply yank ships. And most of the ones he yanked were from kids who were local stars at local powers.

It is ironic that the end of the Pac schedule was probably some of his best coaching in all the nine years he was there. But then he reminded us of who he is when it came time for the Pac Tourney.

          • I never said he was a great coach. He’s an above average coach. I don’t see Hurley being an upgrade. But, time will tell. I’m surprised they didn’t try to make a run at Archie Miller

    • “Our basketball team plays an exciting brand of basketball and has achieved unprecedented success over the past few seasons,” said Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens in a release. “With the reduction in prices and increased student support, we want to recreate the best homecourt advantage in college basketball. For fewer than $10 per game, fans will be able to see one of the nation’s top teams, which represents one of the best values in college athletics.”

I understand toeing the line. But this is complete crap. The TTATT is a poorly conceived venue that is wasting our tax dollars every single year of its existence. Attendance reflects 150% of the good+ sightlines in that arena. That it cost twice as much as it should have isn’t even the primary consideration. That in itself makes it a joke.

    • It’s been some misfortune too. He probably shouldn’t have started out at a powerhouse…he starts off at a program at our level (like a Georgia Tech or Kansas St or Virginia Tech), he probably isn’t going through this right now. Plus there was a coaching change that also meant a scheme change.

      • I’d like to see that rule changed when it comes to coaching changes. If there’s a huge coaching staff turnover, a guy should be able to transfer without having to sit out a year. Take Kyle Kempt for example. He does not fit into GA’s system. So now he’s screwed out of a year since he’s already redshirted. If a position coach leaves than I don’t agree.

    • Football: Paul Lucas, Christian Folau, Seth Collins, Elu Aydon. On offense, we probably need one more RB, we’re good at WR and TE and probably would prefer to not throw freshmen on the O-line. Always good to have more people to rotate in on defense though. Lucas could be that electrifying kick returner and plug-him-in guy on offense.

I’m just hoping we put the best guys on the field instead of favoring seniority. Always kind of threw me when guys like Nall and Williams don’t get PT even though they clearly could get it.

Basketball: Stephen Thompson Jr and Tres Tinkle should be starting next year if they are as advertised. Bruce and Rakocevic have a good shot to get significant PT, Eubanks needs some time to develop before throwing him to the wolves.

  38. Somewhat of interesting timing there, Angry. Make the post then we get another transfer. Collins, Mitchell, and McMaryion is a much better crop, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Money Marc isn’t in the hunt come fall camp.

In other news, looks like we might have a shot at the Boucher kid who was the NJCAA POY. I’m a huge fan of Juco guys just because they’re hungry, they take care of business, and they don’t play around. Peko notwithstanding. But his final six is OREGON STATE, TCU, Texas Tech, Washington St, Wyoming, and Minnesota. Pretty much all teams that are middle to bottom of power conferences and Wyoming. Word is he’s not taking an official here, which sucks because if we got him here he’d most likely commit.

The schollies would almost work themselves out. They’re at 13 with the current arrangement, but if Robbins can’t fulfill his obligations, then we’ve got a spot. Even if Wayne has to pay the 22K or so for tuition, room, and board for Tres, it’d probably be worth it in bonuses.

    • why can’t he live with his parents? Or is that an impermissible no no by the NCAA? I don’t understand how all that shit works most of the time anyways.

      • Tres is likely officially an Oregonian by residence simply because colleges consider the kid a part of the parental household. So he can probably go in-state tuition. And it’s completely valid that he lives with his parents if he so chooses. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Hoopsters live in only a couple off-campus locations. So there’s no huge deal there. He will not get the employee discount if he goes walk-on. That is against the rules.

    • All the rumors /speculation here in the Twin Cities was that it was down to TCU and U of M for Boucher. He would pretty much be a starter if he came Minnesota. However, a couple days ago it came out that Iowa State now may be after him. Hoiberg makes Altman look like a neophyte when it comes to scraping up transfers, rejects, and malcontents. He sells the NBA dream better than anyone not named Calipari.

  39. 1. Both OSU and Oregon are struggling. What specifically has your team had problems with?

Alger: It would be wrong to try and place a finger on just one reason for Oregon’s struggles. The Ducks are the third-to-worst hitting team in the Pac-12. They are seventh in ERA and have 45 errors on the season. The struggles in all facets of the game have turned a season that once saw the Ducks sitting in the Baseball America Top 10 with a 13-2 record into one where the Ducks are 2-7 in Pac-12 play and in serious trouble of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2011.

Playoffs???? Seriously???? In no NCAA sport is a tournament referred to as “the playoffs”. This isn’t the pro’s dude. Just ignorant. But not surprising since he covers the ducks.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2R2sH2ScBM

    • The Ducks are terrible this year. There is nothing good that can come from this series for us other than a sweep.Even that won’t satisfy the onlookers. And our team is so young that I just don’t expect that right now. Our RPI will take a hit regardless.

      • Spot on, Jack. And at oh-dark-thirty to boot.
I’d love to see a sweep but the youth of this squad concerns me as well. I can stomach losses to UCLA, but this series (as was Cal Poly) is one the Beavs need to offset what they face vs the top of the conf.
Anyway, time for a new thread. And….GO BEAVS!

  40. Found this post by aaron_g:
I just read at Building the Dam that Darrell Garretson, the Utah State qb has announced his plans to transfer. And lo and behold he is strongly leaning to signing with OSU. He was recruited by Andersen and McGiven to USU, before GA left to go to Wisconsin. He will have to sit out a year but this could be a good thing. Some who knows the offense well and could help the younger guys out.

Personally because of having to sit out a year I think the move would not be a smart one. Collins or Mitchell will have the position locked down by next year.

      • Would be interesting if Del Rio went there since there’s a strong connection between Baldwin and MeElwain. Maybe GA’s need for a mobile QB out weighs Baldwin, who can obviously work with just a typical pocket guy. Del Rio could have just had no chance from the start.

    • That article is very misleading. When was the last time we even HAD a spring game?

I just remember scrimmages/glorified practices. OSU wouldn’t be filling Reser in any case but attendance would certainly spike with a decent product.

      • I’ve been to a few spring games in the Erickson era and return of Riley. Always low attendance no matter how the team did the previous year or if expectations were high for the next year.

It’s really just the culture of the state. Football is not that important in the off season when there are other things to do.

  41. LDR does not have the mental fortitude to be a major D1 QB. He has significant weaknesses that were exposed not just by GA, but when he was going through his recruiting cycle. This includes mechanics but mental toughness even more. He was quick to overreact at different issues that occurred over the past year and he wasn’t trusted to be a leader when needed. The first time he wanted to transfer was last October. I will also say that he was not the most well liked guy. Loved to complain and criticize but when it came to his own shortcomings he would flip out.

  42. does anybody else feel like that Canzano interview with GA was staged last week, in order to be a catalyst to get LDR to make his mind up and move on?
Just seems strange that GA only did an interview with Canzano that day. Normally, when the coach gets interviewed by Portland radio, he makes the rounds and has essentially the same interview on each local radio show. Also, if you listen to the interview, Canzano is very quick to say at the end of the interview that you heard it here first blah blah blah, Mitchel and Collins are the top 2 QB’s amd Oregon State isnt strong enough yet physically. To me, it almost feels like that interview was set up to get the LDR talk out there in the media, like maybe they told Canzano he could have the scoop if he had GA on? I dont know….just seems a little fishy to me. Either way, the result is what is best for the team, but almost felt a little orchestrated.

    • Didn’t hear it. IIRC… it was on Monday?

I think the decision was made before last Saturday. In fact, I think the decision was made during spring break.

    • nobody? i know he has a reputation for being a hack and tries to create controversy, but his show is still pretty well listened to in the Portland area. Maybe not so much in Santa Barbara

      • I’d listen if you post the link, but I’d never go hunting for a Canzano interview. If what you say is true, that’s bizarre. I hope GA isn’t using the media like that. He seems like a guy who would not be afraid to confront the player and tell him how it’s going to be rather than use the media. That almost seems more like a Riley move…
