July 4th Celebrations

60

Happy 4th weekend, doods.

As the calender turns to July now, we can begin to look toward football season. How about this: since I don’t have a lot to criticize right now and things are going relatively smoothly at OSU, how about I take suggestions for articles you’d like to see, or just thoughts/my opinion on anything Beaver related that you’d like to see between now until Fall camp. I’ll tackle whichever requests I can, but I can’t promise I will get to all because am busy with several projects, but I’ll try to tackle as much as possible.

I’ll be in and out over the weekend, so probably Monday afternoon, or more likely Tuesday, I’ll be able to sit down and look into the suggestions or requests.

  1. I promise not to carry the discussion from the previous thread over here. Celebrations are all we have now. I celebrate all of you and all you put up with when dealing with me… except that whiskey won’t let me pass out on his lawn… and drool and stuff.

Don’t light your houses on fire, and don’t start the party too early. And enjoy yourselves and be safe. I love you all… in an aged hipster way apparently. But at least I don’t know anyone who knows anything. So there’s that.

The reason I believe my country is the best on earth is because it’s mine. I can treat it like a sibling when I was a teenager, and it will love me right back. I know it’s irrational. But it is what it is. I would know nothing of what I know without going through what I’ve gone through. Maybe that would be “better” in some other country. But I challenge others to define “better” for me.

Besides, I’ve been to some 120 countries. And while some have greater beauty in culture or landscape here or there, none have the variation of either and the freedom to express both at the same time. So that’s why I think my homeland is the best while I still think it can be improved. In a hoops sense, we got game. But we also have by far the most upside.

  2. I’ve lived in a few countries too, Jack, and many people feel about their country (and/or religions, languages, culture, etc.) just as strongly as we do about ours. Now if everybody could just accept that’s a perfectly normal thing, we wouldn’t have to fight about it. But like somebody said a long time ago….”Peace is the dream of the wise, war is the history of mankind.” Enjoy your weekend.

  3. As fall camp approaches, I would like to see some depth chart projections/discussion, maybe broken up into a few major position groups.

Also, what’s a good over/under for wins based on the schedule? 5.5? More or less?

Another thought was trying to predict which players might have a big season based on roster and opponents?

I’ve also been researching basketball rosters across the pac12 for next year. While OSU is getting a decent injection of talent, what can be reasonably expected from a group of freshman? Looking at what’s happening with other conference schools, it’s hard to say with much certainty what is a reasonable number of wins for Tinkle’s second season.

    • Sounds good.

Has the official site’s roster been updated? To do projections I need an updated roster, and I’m not sure anyone has that up yet.

  4. The biggest personnel concerns I see are along the offensive line and basically most of the defense.

For the Beavers sake I hope I’m wrong but I can see things getting away from this group pretty easily if they’re unable to sustain an effective run game.

If this line struggles to block with a first year quarterback (whomever it is) forced to throw in obvious passing situations, a good portion of how this team fares hinges upon his success or lack there of.

Toss in the fact that the roster is not particularly “stacked” with talent and experience (by pac12 standards) and I have a hard time seeing more than 4-6 wins here. Bottom line is a big part of this next season will be predicated on how this offensive line group fares against pac12 defensive lines …

    Am I missing something?

    • I think we’re going to see a lot of short passes, which will probably get old fast, unless the WRs have the ability to break them. I personally feel a few do, like Jarmon especially. But Bolden is okay. Villamin might take a step backward in this offense. He isn’t shifty, really, so I don’t see him doing much with short passes. To get him involved might take trick plays (flea flickers, WR pass, etc). I don’t see Collins or Mitchell getting it to him deep. McMaryion I feel can do that, but I’m not sure if he’ll get a shot. Andersen seemed to warm up to him, which I think is a good thing. I still think he’s the most balanced QB of the bunch. I wouldn’t mind a situation where he is the main QB and Collins comes in for some read option. I know the axiom is if you have 2 QBs you don’t have any, but I think in this unique situation it could actually work.

      • Yes YES as long as McMaryion starts! Lol I think it’s time to let that ship sail. Sometimes you’re wrong and just gotta let it go. Remember when Richie Harrington could’ve been All-conference if he just had the opportunity???? Maybe McMariota sees the field when everyone gets injured (classic Beavs) but he’s not beating out the top 2 no matter how hard you try.

      • All of our QBs will play. QB is just another position in this offense. Villamin will get his production because he has that ability. I don’t think he has any yac capabilities other than straight line strength and speed. But he’ll get his.

The O-line has been a dumpster fire since 2008. Cav is obviously not a good O-line coach, if he is the one responsible for their production. If it’s the system, good riddance. We have very good athletes on the O-line. And now we have a coach who has proven at many places he can make any gaggle of fat guys a cohesive unit. Many of our linemen displayed excellent individual work last season. Nothing done last year or the several years before proved anything about how well they will play as a unit this coming year.

If we were getting last year’s O-line capabilities plus the forgotten talent among the depth… plus another player who might have been hurt all last year… I might think the talent itself would be a silly concern.

The D… dumpster fire doesn’t even begin to describe what that has been for years on end. Last year should have been one of the best ever given development and talent. And the numbers really weren’t that bad. But that D just sucked sour eggs, served on soggy toast. Ironically, we now have crazy depth on the line. So rating this coming year may be unfair comparatively. Secondary talent is quite deep. It’s the middle crew that are questionable in terms of experience, not athleticism.

And, in the end, they all have to learn new systems. That in and of itself gives immediate validity to those who want to scream “FOUR WINS… NO MORE!!!” I think the talent on hand and the fact they were so obviously misdirected by those who drew paychecks previously. And if you want to contend that point, I have whole games to show you that support what I say. The ASU game last year was an outlier despite coaching.

I’d be willing to put money on six wins. I have a couple friends who can rationalize seven. I have one friend who guarantees nine wins. I have no friends who think this year will be as bad as last year, even in terms of wins. Every single one of them guaranteed three wins next season before Riley ditched us again.

      • “I think we’re going to see a lot of short passes”

Dave Baldwin is in love with bubble screens. Yet they are a staple of the spread offense

      • Deep ball not possible with the “1A and 1B” quarterbacks, but if our 3rd stringer gets in, we’re going deep!…… Said no one who “knows” football ever

        • Mcmaryion was 3rd because jack del rio was hanging around and the coaches had to pander to him, and he ran a pro offense so he was behind…not because of skill. get a clue. a 3 can become a 1 in fall camp. it happens. said people who watch football.

          • When’s the last time a guy went into camp as the 3rd string and came out the starter? By the way, Del Rio transferred, and Coach Del Rio is no longer around. So there’s no Del Rio’s around at the end of spring ball when McMaryion was still 3rd string. “He’s in the mix”…. Okay, do you expect the new coach to say he has no chance?

          • are you saying Katz was worthy of starting?
            http://www.logicallyfallacious.com/index.php/logical-fallacies/130-moving-the-goal-posts

Also, I am pretty sure a 3rd string QB just won the national title…lol. Off the top of my head, Mark Bulger and Kurt Warner both were 3rd stringers for the Rams. There’s probably a huge list of successful (Warner will get into the HOF eventually) QBs who were 3rd string. I think maybe some of the Duck QBs who became starters and won big were once 3rd string. Masoli maybe? He was at least 2nd string.

          • Yep, behind Katz and Vaz. And can you say with certainty that Collins and Mitchell are worthy of starting at this point?

          • I’d say Katz and Vaz were ahead of Mannion only by seniority. Katz was awful. Vaz, was okay… Mannion had way more potential than either. That’s not the case here. We have 3 guys all relatively same age. I’m not saying Collins and Mitchell are all Pac-12 by any means. Angry’s love for McMaryion is just annoying. The guy up to this point has been the worst QB out there

          • Well you are wrong, Katz was a guy with probably the most tools and potential out of the group but couldn’t put them together.

Mannion was third on the depth chart and probably would have stayed there if not for Katz and Vaz missing a practices giving Mannion a ton of reps with the first team.

          • Bigger arm, better athlete aka better tools, he just could not use them. Similar to Obum, all the tools to be a dominant receiver, but couldn’t find a way to use them, difference is Obum could switch positions whereas Katz could not.

And if you could not see that, then I guess my impression of you will remain the same.

          • Well accuracy is a tool Katz did not have. Pocket presence is a tool he didn’t have. Ability to read a defense is a tool he didn’t have. There’s a lot more to being a quarterback than a cannon arm and being mobile.

          • So there’s no Del Rio’s around at the end of spring ball when McMaryion was still 3rd string.

McMaryion wasn’t getting reps because of Del Rio (who was awful, btw, and higher on the depth chart). When Del Rio left and McMaryion actually got reps, GA spoke highly of him. End of story. Keep that hamster wheel turning and moving the goalposts, though.

          • Funny how you don’t speak to the point of…. What is GA gonna say? That he’s 3r string and has no shot? He’s running a spread and needs every QB to be ready in case of injuries. Nobody considered Mannion 3rd string. Nobody considered Katz a legit option. Are we really comparing that the Ohio state? wow you love to twist stuff don’t you. Did you hear ANY coach in spring ball saying their 3rd QB sucked and should just go home?

          • Your question was: When’s the last time a guy went into camp as the 3rd string and came out the starter?

I answered it. You moved the goalposts. Now you want to change the discussion slightly and you want more answers.

GA isn’t going to say McMaryion has no chance, but he also doesn’t have to be complimentary and make comments like MM made some of the biggest strides of all the QBs. Maybe you’ll at least stop laughing at the idea he could be the starter, since you have plenty of examples now. If you use Google you can probably find more.

The problem with your logic is that you assume MM deserved to be 3rd string to begin with…maybe he didn’t? GA did a quick analysis and even said he had to narrow the 7 down to 3 ASAP, and he had Jack Del Rio lingering around camp. He didn’t have adequate time to evaluate and had the political pressure from Del Rio’s dad. MM also had to learn a new system, which he should know by Fall camp. Maybe MM turns out to be garbage. Nobody knows until he’s behind center with the lights on. But I think he looks good. I don’t have anything more to say about it so this will be the last response.

          • You’re truly some kind of idiot angry. If you want to go by my exact questions, 3rd string coming out of camp as starter… That didn’t happen at Ohio state. Hasn’t happened at Oregon. Didn’t happen in St Louis. Happened in season, due to injury. Just like Cardale Jones didn’t beat Miller or Barrett in camp, neither will McAngry beat Collins or Mitchell

          • If you want to go by my exact questions, 3rd string coming out of camp as starter

I don’t know, because I haven’t followed every team’s fall camp since 1869, when football was invented. That’s a ridiculous question for obvious reasons. Not even the major databases are going to have that information. I gave you 3rd stringers who became starters, because it’s more reasonable (so I assumed it is what you meant). I can argue you’re an idiot for asking such an impossible question. Actually, I’ll ask you the same question…you go to the microfiche and answer that one, buddy, and congrats on your subsequent PHD in sports history.

          • Angry— YOU said that the QB can move from 3 to 1 in one camp. Not me. I simply asked how often does that happen, implying that it isn’t likely.

          • Yes…anything can happen. I don’t know how often it happens. Probably not often. I don’t think most teams go into camp with QBs as bad as Collins and Mitchell, though…

I view Collins as Vince Young, light edition. Really bad throwing mechanics (though they did look better in the spring game. Maybe McGiven has already helped out there). Mitchell is a bit more balanced, but I don’t think he can get the ball downfield. With Mitchell we’re looking at 10-15 yard passes, which takes Villiman out of the equation.

Dude, I could be wrong. That’s how I see it, though. I’m not obsessed with McMaryion. I just think he has some wheels and a bigger arm than the other two. I think Collin’s wheels have to be utilized, which is why I said maybe two QBs this year…

It’s a unique situation that calls for a unique solution. Unless one of these dudes comes into Fall a new man. But based on Spring, that’s what I saw.

  5. Don’t want to keep posting, but I just read that the Byrd kid (one of the higher rated db recruits 2*-3* depending on the site) just changed his commitment to FIU.

Could be a good thing long term for both. Have to consider the different directions these young kids are pulled in during recruitment. Highschool team mates, staying close to home, schools they liked growing up, playing time, coaching, etc.

In the end, you have to wish the kids well whether they pick “your” school or not.

  6. It’s funny to see the Oregonian and the posters behind the Blitz paywall talk about how proud they are that their recruiting information is always verified by a reliable source, and they take pride in not just retweeting information (a subtle jab at Beavrecruiting). Yet today, they both had stories about the Jadarius Byrd de-commitment where they each cited “per his twitter” and both said they hadn’t heard back from him yet. At the same time, Beavrecruiting had information about his decommitment that is 100% verified. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds (name the movie quote for bonus points)

With that, Happy Independence Day, and be safe mother f’ers!

    • It’s funny to see the Oregonian and the posters behind the Blitz paywall talk about how proud they are that their recruiting information is always verified by a reliable source

But really, think about it from their perspective: they have a business model not congruent with modern times. How else are they going to distinguish themselves? They have to sell something or else they starve, so what they sell is “hey, we verify!”. Even if that’s true, all someone has to do is wait about ten minutes to see verification on twitter. The pay sites are only for impatient diehards who can’t wait the extra ten minutes to know info…

I think they’re all going to go under eventually. Twitter is disruptive technology.

      • They go out of their way to tell their readers a recruit’s twitter acct is NOT a valid source for their news, yet they turn around and use a recruit’s tweet as their verification in this case, because the recruit wasn’t returning their phone calls. Maybe this was the moment they both decided to change with technology, but I think it’s more that they’re just admitting they’ve been telling their reader’s bullshit in order to discredit a little competition.

  7. Osich up, Boyd down. Matt didn’t record an out in his second appearance and gave up two dingers among the 7 batters he faced. Sent packing to AAA. I hope he can flush and recover, has to be really disappointing.

  8. Schnell finally hits the nail on the head. Tweets in response to news that PK ” takes steps away from Nike; will leave as board chairman.” As follows:

Ok but he’s still in charge at UO, right?

    • I thought that was always understood. What I also understood was that PK had nothing to do with Nike itself for… oh… the last ten years or so. Therefore, the connection between Nike and Nikegon was always something made up by Beavs because we’re jealous… of something… I think.

I always bought that line. Now we know it was never true. Kinda makes their downfall that much more pathetic in the end.

My schadenfreude for Duck High School will not match that they have displayed toward us for the sole reason of sport (like they have anything else) while ignoring their vast deficiencies in academics. It will be one borne of pathos… an understanding that their soul was sold for a pittance… a belief that anyone can pick themselves up out of a very deep hole they dug for themselves….

Who am I kidding? They suck, and they put themselves in a position to suck for decades. And it’s not even enjoyable enough to make fun of them. They might not even know we were doing so.

  9. Happy Independence Day! To all fellow veterans, thanks for your service.

    • At first glance, cut Mullaney and add the 2015 class except Thomas. I think the other medical retirements are captured in this list (Bays, Wienrich)
Other than that, I think its pretty accurate but there will probably end up being another casualty somewhere down the road. (Peko?)

    • That’s going to be happening very soon I feel. Getting a lot of buzz from NY media and MLB Network is advocating the call up.

Even decided to pick him up in my fantasy league because my team is desperate for young prospects.

  10. Happy 4th of July everyone.

Hearing that GPII did well at the Nike Basketball Academy, good for him. And I’m jazzed about the kid outta Bellevue. Always like having Washington and Oregon kids on the team, especially tall and athletic ones.
