Oregon State Pre-Season Position Breakdown: Wide Receivers

38

These are the WRs, according to the official site:

6 Bolden, Victor WR 5-9 172 Jr.
88 Dockery, Rahmel WR 5-10 179 Jr.
18 Gilmore, Malik WR 6-3 217 Jr.
9 Guyton, Datrin WR 6-5 185 RFr.
19 Hawkins, Xavier WR 5-7 176 So.
2 Jarmon, Hunter WR 5-11 198 So.
87 Kell, Drew WR 6-1 189 RFr.
85 Ovgard, Gabe WR 5-10 188 RFr.
13 Villamin, Jordan WR 6-4 235 So.

I think Paul Lucas and Shawn Wilson could become WRs as well. Lucas’ speed could be a game changer, but given the depth at WR he will likely redshirt.

I think Bolden and Jarmon will be the bubble screen guys, with both capable of deep routes as well. Jarmon especially intrigues me. Villamin is a guy I expect to take a step backward. Not because of his ability, but rather the combination of new QB who [likely] can’t throw deep combined and the overall offensive style. If and when they attempt passes in the 25 yard range, Villamin will be the guy. Another guy I am excited about is Guyton. Very high on Guyton. Dockery has been serviceable. So the Beavs are 5 deep at WR.

Gilmore has been a disappointment his entire career, and this offense and depth chart isn’t going to help. I’m not bullish on Hawkins. He should move to DB — that’s his best shot at playing time.

I’d like to see 3WR sets with Jarmon, Bolden, Guyton/Villamin (depending on the play called). 4 WR sets of Jarmon, Bolden, Guyton, Villamin is about as good as it gets in the Pac-12. Riley left a lot of WR talent.

  1. Didn’t realize we have zero seniors at this position now that Mullaney has transferred. The new QB will be spoiled the next two years. Hope we can take advantage of it.

  2. It will be intersting to see how these bubble screens progress. i am not in love with Bolden and I wonder if he has the breakaway ability in a one-on-one scenarios. Bolden and Jarmon both have good speed so given open space they could make plays. I like Jarmon a lot think he is tough enough to break through the tacklers and has good quickness and athletic ability to make plays. I expect a good year from him.

I think Villamin would be good on the screens because he has the size to break tackles and even just fall forward for positive gain. He showed enough speed and ability to run long routes, now he needs to be more consistent with those routes and catches, but another season under his belt I believe he will be able to do that.

I don’t like the depth here but I do like the starters.

  3. 5 legit WRs is good depth. I’m not sure why you don’t like depth, but I agree I like Jarmon more than Bolden.

I feel the media got lazy and anointed Bolden the B. Cooks replacement when he wasn’t nearly as good, and now he’s been built up more than he should be. He’s a fine player, but he’s not a game changer at this point. Jarmon is exciting. Guyton is very exciting. What is unknown is how they’ll all fit in this offense — scheme can make or break a guy in this sport.

    • You know how people love to do that… Malcolm Agnew was going to be the next Jacquizz Rodgers, KJ Harrison’s the next Michael Conforto, Todd Stansbury’s the next, errrrrrrrrrr…

    • Because Gilmore doesn’t impress me has a lot of drops, doesn’t always run the correct route. Hawkins seems to small to play effective at the position (could be a decent returner if he gets open space) can’t block, goes down to easy. Don’t know that Kell or Ovgard will bring anything to the table?

Guyton should be good,, so maybe that is enough to provide depth?

      • Right, but there are 5 legit WRs without Gilmore or Hawkins:

        Jarmon, Bolden, Villamin, Guyton, Dockery

Dockery was very good in his limited role, so I am not sure why fans aren’t placing any value in him.

  4. Sorry to go off topic, but I found this t-shirt today while walking through Macys, and decided to buy it.

I’m a little skeptical that it’s not an Oregon State shirt though, because the orange is a little on the “light” orange side. Does anybody know of another school that has a block O logo, other than Ohio State, that would use a light shade of orange? I know sometimes local stores try to pass off Oklahoma State gear as Oregon State gear. Wondering if I was duped? I still like the shirt much better than anything with that giant re-beaved logo on it.

  5. I agree with your comments on the WR situation. We’ve got a good amount of talent there but not expecting it to be utilized to it’s fullest potential due to the situation at QB. can’t imagine there will be too many passes over 20-25 yards all season so they will have to rely on the yards after catch to get their numbers. whoever can make plays with the ball in their hands is going to get the most touches. Mullaney noticed that and saw the writing on the walls. gonna need the playmakers to step up and make plays!

two things to note, Gabe Ovgard has switched over to safety and I believe Shawn Wilson will start at CB but could be wrong

      • Same here, listed as TE on Spring Roster. BTW, wasn’t he mentioned as a potential holder? Would Andersen have the moxie to have him pass from that spot?

EDIT: Right on cue, Gina up with a piece on TE/H Back. Lists Nall and Clute with Sanders, Avocado Ortiz, Brent VanderVeen, and Noah Togiai as “in camp”.

  6. The misconception that tall/fast WR cant be effective on Bubbles is a misnomer. Randy Moss ( not that Villamin is him) was arguably the best all time at taking bubble screens and hitch routes to the house. Its simple math those guys while not as shifty as smaller burst guys are harder to tackle especially if / when they break through the first tackle. Good luck stopping them with a head of steam.

    Megatron
    Dez Bryant
    Julio Jones

Are just as dangerous on Bubble or Tunnels as your smaller WR.

    • I agree with that, but those guys are all very fast and physical. Not sure JV is either…he’s more balanced. I wasn’t basing it on size alone but more the offense and JV’s skill set.

      • I’d say he’s balanced, CaliBeav.

Good speed, size, and somewhat physical, but not great at any. You can still be a good player balanced like that. I like Villamin and stood up for him his freshman year when everyone was bailing on him, saying to wait to see before judging him and even saying I saw glimpses that he could be good. People were very down on him early on due to drops.

        • I think you give him less credit than deserved for being physical. He embraced and went after blocking last year. And his highlights show some big hits that didn’t knock him down as well as people fighting him and him just focusing on the ball and playing them off with just his body. And he had no fear going over the middle.

You’re correct that his speed isn’t fabulous. But it’s deceptive, especially once he breaks into his long stride. He just doesn’t have the stop and start on YACs we’ve enjoyed with the smaller WRs we’ve had in recent years. His size is spectacular considering his speed and hands. Perhaps you think he should be more physical given his size? He runs pretty routes and got open where he was supposed to break open last year. Mannion was just not familiar enough with him to see those breaks most of the time. But his secondary moves were just as good and led to him being a late outlet for good yardage.

I look at him and see a lot of what Mike Williams was at USC… without the same game planning. Remember Williams would get that bubble screen and plow for five or six yards. It was nothing spectacular, but it was worthy of a run play for that amount… in the days when Reggie Bush and Lendale White ran the ball. If you look at his stats, he didn’t have any huge over-the-top plays because he really didn’t have the speed we’re talking about for an NFL WR. But he could get open, and he was physical (not shifty) for YAC.That’s what I see in JV… that and someone a head on his shoulders… in life first, football second and school third. So long as he grinds in school, I think he’ll be a success at everything else.

Btw… I’m really excited to see Guyton play. That kid has star WR written all over him.
