Home Football Marcus McMaryion Situation

Marcus McMaryion Situation

210

Funny how Connor is blowing this up on twitter. What a loser.

So this is what is happening:

I made my prediction in March.

I just finished watching video of all 7 qbs.

McMaryion will definitely be the starter.

I took a ton of heat for it all summer. I also read report after report from mainstream media that it was a two horse race. Started to believe it, but held out hope MM would make a move in the Fall. That’s where I stood, and it was consistent.

BUT, after I tried to get a pass from Fenk, people inside OSU reached out to me and offered to give me information here and there. I used that information to write practice reports. Some of it required reading between the lines in order to protect sources, etc, and maybe I read between the lines wrong, but my interpretation of these nuggets was that MM was not performing well and essentially out of the race. I wrote the practice reports because you guys, fans, like them and were bummed Silver and the guys wouldn’t be reporting this year. But they aren’t my observations. They are my interpretations of others observations, media reports, and nuggets people send me. My observations were based off the film since that’s the only time I saw these guys play. And I put that in print back in March.

One more thing to say on this: I did become somewhat biased and believe that Collins and Mitchell were the only choices. But this was recent. Very recent. Like maybe after Media Day when they basically crowned Seth the starter during the interviews. Sources told me Mitchell looked better, though, so that’s what I wrote in the reports. Nobody was telling me positives about MM. So yeah, I became biased and figured it was between those two QBs, and I was wrong about MM. I was actually getting ready to have to write a post saying I was wrong about MM, because that was the deal — the dissenters told me I was nuts, and I said I’d agree to admit I was wrong. Well, I was getting ready for that post based off everything I was being told. I might still have to, because at this point he is not the starter. He’s just catapulted himself into the mix [which is what I was expecting and hoping for before Fall camp].

I’m not at practice, so I have to rely on the astuteness of those who are, and also interpreting information.

That’s the reality here. Connor is bitter because I told everyone to boycott his shit paper because their past narrative (nobody wants to coach in Corvallis, impossible to recruit to Corvallis) was also entirely wrong. Is it any surprise they had this story totally wrong? Nope.

I was the only outlet with the balls to call MM. Why? Because I watched him and can spot talent.

  1. Got to agree on all points of what your saying. You were definitly out spoken on liking mm. Seems like you were in the right on this one. I hope it’s a battle for at least a week and than they announce a starter. But I gotta think mm will get the nod because he seems like the best combo of speed, throwing, and head. Collins still might get #1, but I would think it’s mainly how fast he is.

    • collins was spring game starter, mm 3rd string. all three in race to start

why is it weird for people in march to predict collins and people now to predict mm? am i missing something

  2. Why would Connor be bitter? He’s moving on at the end of this week? He is simply pointing out that the most recent thing you said is that MM appears out of the race. I see it as more as pointing fun at what you said; one tweet isn’t anything. I’d do it. Angrybeavs is now SensitiveBeavs?

  3. That’s a pretty accurate assessment, although i dont think Conner was going too far overboard. Maybe he didnt read what you had been talking about since Spring and only saw the recent practice report post? Think he just spoke too soon rather than looking at the big picture, which I’ve done many times myself.

Guess we’ll find out how it plays out next week. Pretty sure GA said he wanted a QB picked by week 2 of fall camp. Only a few days away.

  4. I think that people are jumping the gun a little bit here. I think MM has a possible promising future if he continues to work but that O Live article did not say that he was going to be the starter, it just mentioned that he jumped over Mitchell (which is not a surprise).

Don’t forget that these guys aren’t even in full pads yet. When the pads go on, that’s where the dust settles! And to be fair, Collins looked really good for a guy that should have been going to his HS prom rather than starting in the Spring Game and having a solid outing! Has Marcus improved? Probably, I hope so but I’m sure Seth has too. This will all shake out in a week or so of pads! I still bet that Collins is the starter but hope the fire and competition stays up and guys continue to push each other! That’s what makes players and more importantly, teams better!

    Go Beavs!

    • Well, it says a little more than he just jumped Mitchell. “if the season started today, McMaryion would likely be OSU’s starter.”

But he’s not the starter yet, if that’s your point.

      • Yeah, but basing the starting QB on 3 practices wearing basically shells (shoulder pads and helmets) that is definitely not enough to make a well informed decision IMO. The article was written, I think, because it’s all hypothetical and I even think the staff may have done this on purpose to make sure all three QBs feel like they are in the race for the starting position. If they did, then that is flat genius because it will keep competition alive plus only having 3 players at any position is scarce! All three of these guys have to be ready to go for sure. But just my opinion, when the pads are on and we’re in the last week of Fall Camp, Collins will be the starter.

        Go Beavs!

        • But the staff wants a starter named by week 2, so everyone is running out of time.

I thought about that angle: that maybe GA was using this as motivation. But it doesn’t seem like something he’d do in the media. He shuts the media out of practice, yet he’s going to use them to motivate his players? I don’t see it. I think GA wants players to motivate themselves and this is all genuine.

    • Collins just isn’t a very good thrower. I just watched the Spring highlights again, and I see 20+ INTs if he starts every game. He’s late with throws. That can obviously improve over time, but based on the fact MM moved up because he is “making the fewest mistakes” doesn’t suggest it has.

I just finished the Baro podcast. Rathbone makes a good comment, something to the effect that Collins can do flips and hurdles, but you need substance from a QB. This was recorded before the MM article. His conclusion was Mitchell. But his point is right — substance at QB. MM had a 4.0 GPA, and Harvard, Penn, Yale, and Princeton all wanted him as their QB. He can pass and run (#16 dual threat QB in 2013).

It’s a more impressive resume than Collins. Yet because Collins does hurdles and flips, everyone defaulted to him as the starter. Collins has value as a runner. I think he should be mixed in here and there.

      • Agreed that Collins is not the best passer! I think he really needs work on intermediate to deep throws (20yds+) but also on his touch. His ball is rarely a tight spiral, in fact, the nose is often up and wobbly (a sign of an early release) however…….
He is the best chance for the Beavers to win IMO. Neither of the other QBs are very good mechanically either. Mitchell was horrible with his decisions and his throws throughout the entire Spring. I liked the little that I saw from McMaryion at the end of the Spring Game. Some guys have that “it” factor, which I think Collins has. again, if this staff feels that MM gives us the best chance to win, then he’ll be the starter! But that will be major decider here, not how good of a deep ball passer or who has the best arm, but who gives us the best chance to win (complete package; decisions, running ability, understanding of the offense, passing ability, leadership, etc.).

        Go Beavs!

          • Well nobody said that, but it means he’s highly intelligent (at least for a football player) and probably won’t make a lot of mistakes. McGiven says he was the most inquisitive regarding the offense during the off season, etc. These are good traits. More important than hurdling people, imo.

          • But we’ll stick with your 100% guarantee that MM won’t ever start for OSU. I’m open to it being a possibility until it isn’t.

          • Hey bro, my money is on Angry’s assessment: ” At this point, we have to assume McMaryion is out of the race. His body language and verbal language on media day suggested this, too. He was not sharp today, mostly practicing with a mediocre second unit, which could have had something to do with that. There is still time for him to do something, but he’s quickly becoming an afterthought. Injury is likely the only way he sees the field. At this point, we have to assume McMaryion is out of the race. • All covered in the original post. Assessment of his passing was from a source who was actually at practice, his body language was bad on video (still true), and everyone including me bought into the two qb race talk perpetuated by the media. Yeah, I thought if he was going to make a move in Fall he’d have to do it quickly, so it started to look grim for him, but the media only gets a short amount of time to watch, so they don’t see most of practice. Therefore, everyone has misinformation or at least an incomplete picture — I based my opinion on that. What is your point? Fact remains AB is the only site that called MM the starter in March based on analysis of 7 QBs on the roster. Period. Find another media outlet making the claim.

          • Every other conversation ever had. Anything sounds pretty all-encompassing to me.

Except for your 100% guarantee that MM will never start for OSU, you provide zero analysis, commentary, predictions, clarifications or even friendly rhetoric. Come to think of it, even your 100% guarantee is a negative waiting to be proven. You’re definitively anti-everyone… a recording set on “Nuh-uh, you dumb!”

          • Jack if I comment on a thread, it’s safe to say I’m discussing the topic of that thread. You want Angry to tell all the readers to spell out everything to Jack understands?

          • I look back on all your comments, and I find it hard to call any of them contributions. The only one that might be construed as positive about someone on our roster is only that way because your comparator (also on our roster) is just crapped on by you. So your one positive comment about someone is only as positive as the low bar you set by bad-mouthing another kid.

I don’t have a hard time understanding other readers. I don’t have a hard time understanding what you write. I have a hard time understanding why you think the words you write don’t mean what they mean. You speak in definitive terms, but you recall them as if you think they’re flexible. What’s that all about? Do you just forget that your past comments are still available for everyone to read if they choose to do so?

          • You speak in definitive terms, but you recall them as if you think they’re flexible.

            So true.

When angry@angry writes anything, no matter what it actually says, what it means is this, “I hate angry, and especially hate when he’s right about something.”

Doesn’t matter what he writes. That’s what he means. The actual words are just manipulation as a way around outwardly stating that underlying sentiment.

          • Couldn’t be any more wrong Jack. There’s a lot of players and coaches I like with the Beavs. And Angry, again you’re wrong about me. I even said I agree with you on WR’s… But now anything I say means “I hate angry”??

  5. It looks like GA’s most important factor with a QB is making the fewest mistakes. A smarter qb makes sense then. In general, frosh qb’s tend to make enough dumb decisions the result in turnovers. Collins seems more ‘watch me make this play’ kind of guy, which will work when he’s a junior, but not so much as a frosh.

    • Makes sense too, not to burn Collin’s redshirt if he isn’t
a.)head and shoulders above the other 2 options
      b.)needed because of injury

  6. is collins the new villain of this site? hes taking a lot of heat for a guy whose never played

I think all 3 will get their chance and probably be sub par this year. Am, open to any of them.

    • Collins has an incredible ceiling with the right coaching. Maybe fans aren’t used to his “cockiness”. I feel fine with him or mm, gotta think the most consistent will win out.

    • I just didn’t like that he penciled in as the savior and the greatest thing since sliced bread by fans because he is athletic and occasionally hurdles and flips. People just forgot what the qualities of a good quarterback are and were blinded by the flips.

  7. Poll on a Husker site:
Poll: Which are you more excited to see? Langsdorf’s Offense or Banker’s Defense?
LOL. Next question. Do you prefer to be water boarded or electro shocked?

  8. I think we need all 3 qb’s this season, and probably all three start at one point, UNLESS nobody gets hurt, which given the play of these guys is highly unlikely. But if its 1A and 1B then that’s great for the program! Let them fight it out it and see who is ahead once the dust settles. The competition will push both to be their best, which should translate to less mistakes and better efficient offense.

More importantly, and what I have not read from many outlets is how well they are running the ball?? Does anybody know or is it too early? We are going to need to run the ball effectively and with success or it won’t matter who is the QB, because they will have to pass the entire time and none of these QB’s are capable of throwing us to a victory.

    • From what I have heard is the new format for practices these first three practices has been extremely limited. they have two separate groups practicing (Vets in the first group, inexpereinced players in the second). The media only gets to see the ending of the second group, that adds to some of the mystery on the whole quarterback issue, no one knows how Collins or Mitchell are doing. Apparently that format is ending on Wednesday.

      • Ending, as in the groups will be mixed and media still only gets 20 minutes? Or will media get locked out totally from live practice.

Anybody have one of those drones that can carry a gopro?

  9. I love this new coaching staff but it will be hard to get use to not getting as many detailed updates. I understand why they do it….. but damn!

Anyone know if the practice this Saturday is open to the public?

    Thanks in advance.

    Go Beavs!

  10. Eh, at this point, I think it’s better for all parties involved to not get so emotionally involved as to which quarterback ends up starting.

    • That sucks. By Sept 23rd we’ll already know everything we need to about the Beavs. They should do it during camp and just edit out any specifics that other teams could use.

      • Ya that does blow, but hopefully by then we are “turning” some heads with a beat down in the Big House and we will get some love

        • I would be shocked if we won in the Big House. If we do, expect us to hit the top 25 immediately after that. I would also raise our season win expectation to about 8 if we won against Michigan.

          • I would be a little surprised, but certainly not shocked. As I previously stated. Meechicken will have had the same number of games under their belts under Harbaugh as the Beavs will have had under GA. One. And they have to go to Salt Lake City. And I can easily see them losing that game.

    • I think you’re right Craig. Michigan is extremely overrated and that will be a very winnable game for us. One of the beautiful things about this game is that all the pressure is on them to win at home in front of nearly 100K fans, not on us! I think if our guys eventually settle in, relax and execute (not to say that’s a small order), we will enjoy the outcome.

      Go Beavs!

  11. On the Pac12 show, Gary Andersen said that there is some separation between #1 and #2. He did not give names. He also abandoned 1a and 1b.

  12. Man, that is a cheap shot by Connor. It’s pretty widely known on this site that Angry had been high on MM for a long time.

I’d also add that it was obvious that practice reports were being collected from various sources and obviously not directly from Angry. One of the key statements is “we have to assume” – which indicated to me that those watching practice saw something to indicate as much.

I think the media folks get a bit defensive because they know that knowledgeable fans can do their job better.

    • What angry does and what the media members do is different. Connor, Gina and other are reporters, they report what they see and hear, and what has happened since early in spring is Collins and Mitchell were given more reps and told by the coaches that they were 1A and 1B on the depth chart until just recently. They didn’t make up this story, they reported it.

Angry would be more of a columnist, which is completely different than a beat reporter, he puts his opinions based on the information he knows — a lot of which comes from information gathered from beat reports.

No offense to angry, but he based most of his prediction off of high school tape, while the reporters are going off of what they see at practice and what the coaches are telling them. If anything the feud should be between angry and the coaches for not recognizing Marcus’ talent earlier.

Also, Connor has also been one of the few media members that I remember saying not to count our McMayrion since Del Rio transferred.

anyway just my two cents. I think this feud is a little silly.

      • It is. And to be fair, the only thing being recognized right now in the QB battle is game management, specifically mistake free management.

      • What feud? Angry just has a huge ego, this isn’t a feud. He took a quick lil tweet and made a full blown post about it.

I don’t blame Fenk one bit for denying Angry’s credential. If you make a practice report and didn’t watch practice, that shows a lack of informational integrity and standards in reporting.

        • I have no ego. My 2015 new year’s resolution was “humility”!

Also, you talked about lack of integrity, then posted a bunch of nonsense and thumbed yourself up for it.

        • If you make a practice report and didn’t watch practice

How is that different than the media using “unnamed sources”?

Nobody here thinks Angry writes the practice reports. It’s been that way for years.

          • He’ll be in the East Bay. If he’s smart, at his age he should just get a room where he can flop. He’s only going to be at home for sleeping anyway.

          • He’ll be lucky to find a room, even in Oakland or Berkeley. Does Berkeley still have rent control, where the place stayed in the same name forever and ever, thus the rent didn’t ever go up? Word-of-mouth and lots of trust.

          • There are plenty of room situations in E’ville, Alameda or over the hills with BART access. He can probably find a large studio to share for cheap down by Merritt as well. It isn’t going to be as cheap as up here, but it will be a lot cheaper than getting a full on apartment.

      • you wouldn’t have to search too hard to find an opinion from connor or any other beat reporter. they do more than simply report.

  13. Angry,

Don’t throw out your shoulder patting yourself on the back lol. I have no issue with McMaryion being the starting QB. I thought he looked as good or better than Mitchell in the spring game. But, if he’s improved enough over the summer then so be it. And I agree with Dave Baldwin’s assessment. You need a game manager out there. Someone who limits their mistakes. You have playmakers around you. Don’t make mistakes and get those players the ball. The qb that does that the best should be the starter.

  14. From what I saw in the Spring Game, I had MM as ahead of Mitchell. Wasn’t Nick’s best day but MM felt more comfortable as a leader out there and I had more faith in his methodology to keep drives going and make pretty good decisions. Also like him as 2nd best in scrambling after Seth. Only reason to like Nick ahead of any of the QBs is throwing motion but he actually was the least effective in that Spring Game IMO. Seth has scrappiness and will run when needed which keeps drives going. Nick is more likely to throw a close but incomplete pass in that same situation which was the Riley fallacy that close counts for something on what ends up a zero gain play. Seth threw well in the Spring Game and for quick strike throws where you threaten to either have a guy relatively open or could take off it is dangerous. Ducks been doing it for years because it nets first downs and frustrates defenses. I like Collins as the starter but have no issues with MM using smart and consistent play to challenge for playing time. Limiting mistakes is big but if Collins doesn’t force to many balls then he will be OK. MM played decent in Spring Game but had a couple throws that weren’t gems. He just did a bit better job than Nick that day of looking more comfortable leading the offense.

Against Weber St Collins will probably look pretty darn good when he breaks 3-4 runs and also because of that threat finds some open looks at receivers. Maybe McMaryion will get to play most of the 4th in that game and we will see if he keeps the petal down and can lead the offense to a couple scores of his own.

  15. So what’s the timeline on this QB stuff? I’m tired of the perpetual blue balls already. Saturday’s scrimmage will decide it once and for all, but any chance it’s decided before then?

    • I still can’t believe this decision was made this soon. I wish practices were still open so I could see how this whole thing unfolded.

Does this qualify for luck o’ the beavers? one of the most interesting shifts in a quarterback competition and it happens the year after they decide to close practices? haha

      • In his interview, GA said that Sitake threw the book at the QBs, and Baldwin told him to bring it on. That’s what the talk about game management is about. MM (allegedly) just came into camp more prepared to either recognize coverages or know his own limitations and mitigate mistakes.

Learning when and when not to run the draw is the next step. If anyone can run that consistently for five yards, then misdirection means something. Then you get the ball in the hands of the playmakers and let them carry the load. Everything else is gravy.

    • I thought it was decent. Nigel Burton is a host (didn’t realize he was on the Pac-12 network now).

The interviews with GA, Woods, Bolden, and Grimble stood out. Bolden’s matured a lot. Grimble seems highly intelligent. Woods slips up and mentions something about the next level…hope his focus is on OSU and not the NFL…I know he wants the NFL, but if teammates think that’s all he cares about, he could lose them.

I’d say watch it for all those reasons.

      • Nigel is still getting a pretty nice paycheck from PSU not to coach, so if he takes another coaching gig, that goes away. This way he gets to double dip, and still stay around the profession. I think he got a raw deal at PSU, but that’s besides the point. Their athletic department is like the keystone cops.

Installing my pac12 app now to try watching this show. Thx for the recap

  16. All I have is pac12 Bay Area. Logged into the app and won’t let me watch saying internal error. But yet I can watch Oregon and Washington. Pisses me off.

  17. “What a loser.”

What’s next? Are you going to say that Connor seems so angry that he’s bleeding out of his eyes… Bleeding out of his wherever…

  18. This might be a stupid question but something I’ve always wondered about and not known the answer: Does the university help pay for OV’s? Is that why kids only get 5? I assume lodging and some meals are taken care of, but does the NCAA allow help with cost of airfare?

I ask because obviously some of these kids are coming from impoverished areas, so if they’re taking 5 + trips it just seems like some families wouldn’t have an extra 2-3K laying around for plane tickets.

    • I think each school gets 35 OVs. Infraction penalties reduce that number for some teams. The kid gets air, car, board, and 3 event comps for him and his parents. Kids are limited to five OVs (D1 and D2 combined), and they can’t be taken until after their senior year begins.

    • Yes, the athletic department pays for the entire trip. Travel costs, meals and lodging for the psa. If the parent attends too, the school can only pay for their room and board, not travel costs. It’s an odd rule.

No idea why it’s limited to 5. My guess is because smaller schools wanted a limit for financial reasons.

    • I do believe the OV’s are included in the recruiting budgets of the universities and they do provide the transportation. However, if they want to bring a parent, I think they have to pay that on their own. Per NCAA rules recruits are only allowed 5 Official visits. Any other visits to any other schools or the multiple visits to the same school would be unofficial visits and on their own dime.

  19. Wasn’t someone reporting in here a couple of days ago that MM was missing throws and didn’t look good? Things changed that quickly? I get the less mistakes angle. I think we are going to see a lot feeding the ball to Woods and short passes.

And I will not be surprised if all three see snaps this year and Garrettson is the eventual starter next season.

    • It’s because only 20 minutes of practice is open. As mentioned several times. So that means anyone at practice is getting just a small portion of the picture.

        • Someone leaked the MM info to Gina, but the general media is out of the loop because they don’t see the entire picture due to GA policy. Apparently starting on Wednesday they will get to see more practice time, so their reports and observations should become more accurate then.

  20. I just noticed 5 valid posts in the spam folder. If you post something and it doesn’t show up, shoot me an email. You probably were ID as spam for some reason

      • He is going to flourish in Tinkle’s system, especially as we speed it up. Very good rebounder, good bounce, soft hands, it looks like he knows how to establish himself down low, we should look forward to him in 2016. Coming out of Mitty and playing with the Oakland Soldiers, he can surely play with the best of them. Cal and San Diego State were recruiting him as well.

        http://www.d1circuit.com/roster_players/7722683?subseason=229657

He did pretty well at Peach Jam. Very important piece to get a solid PF in there, I can kind of see what Tinkle is doing. I wonder what he’s doing on the wing but he’s building a solid frontcourt and backcourt right now.

        • Because he’s with the media and researched him back when Kone was offered him back in June.
I was able to find some highlight films from various camps back then, but even Kone said he doesnt have a true highlight film put together. I can say Kone was very excited about the prospect of playing for OSU back then and said he was willing to do anything to help build the program.

          • Craig Robinson even brought is some pretty decent recruiting classes, he just couldn’t develop talent and was not a Pac-12 caliber coach.

Football can be a different animal and we still haven’t seen GA bring in any higher rated recruits than Riley did even though people claim they “look better.”

          • we still haven’t seen GA bring in any higher rated recruits than Riley did even though people claim they “look better.”

            Can you elaborate?

If they look better, aren’t they better? What are recruits judged by if not how they look when playing against others?

          • Even if the measurables weren’t better and the PSAs only “look better,” at least GA recruited to positions of need. I don’t think we’ll be starting former walk-on O-linemen and never should have been wide receivers on our D-line for many years to come.

          • Sanders seems like a tweener in every sport. Special teams is probably his best bet for any playing time, but backup TE seems appropriate, too. Maybe backup safety if he has the instincts.

          • Has there been any talk of Nall moving to RB, after the Cook news came out? Seems like a good move for depth reasons since they were pretty excited about Cook for the power game. Maybe Ortiz? Still like Nall at LB though.

          • I think we need to slap #54 on Nall now and give him a shot at being the next Urlacher. I know this is about winning college games but how many TE’s do you see being successful in the league at 6’2″? Seems like LB would give him the best chance at long term success.

          • I think he’d make a great strong safety, too. Watching him play in HS, he had pretty good ball skills. He’s got good speed and size. Personally, I think he was being short-changed with all the experimentation at different positions.

          • Seems to me Sanders is so agreeable and wants to play so badly that, as a tweener, he is open to that experimentation. Given that he isn’t a super star, I can go two ways on this: 1) Coaches find it easy to move him around cause he won’t bitch, and 2) Coaches see something (drive? smarts? over-all athleticism?) that causes them to try to get him on the field.
That said, I sure agree that the experimentation can be viewed as being short changed.

BTW, marcodg, good to see you made it over from the big O !

          • OOB, you kinda inspired me to jump in here. Nice not seeing the usual suspects trolling the grounds. (BTW, I wasn’t referring to Sanders, but to Nall. As a CC grad myself, I want to see him be successful.)

          • Responding to marcodg….
Glad to have you over here. The “reply” function usually helps eliminate any confusion but it doesn’t seem to be working right today.
We do have other “suspects” here, but they are generally more creative and fun than elsewhere.

          • Is there a position he can’t play? I never saw him in HS. All I know is he’s been rumored at RB, TE, LB, HB and now SS. He’ll probably be a big special teams contributor too. Really hope he’s able to live up to the hype.

        • Good assessment. I’d add I think he’ll explode this year and we’re getting him at the right time. Good size, this kid is ready to play right now at 6’8″-6’9″, 230-240#. Good back to the basket game, outstanding rebounder, a real banger. He gets 15-16 points, 12-14 rebounds pretty regularly and can pass the ball out of a double team. Solid defensively with long arms, he can block some shots. I really like him.

          Good interview too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M0DwFy_3PU

I’d guess Jordan Ford could be next.

  21. Ken Bone sucks. Ben Kone is a highly intelligent player and person who is a guaranteed double/double at the high major level. He has soft hands, a wide base and is not a black hole. Our shooters are going to love him. And he is a work horse who doesn’t get into foul trouble. He’s a machine.

Tinks got on him early, and he blew up this summer (as much as a player on the Soldiers can blow up). If you want a good interview, start asking this kid some questions. Right now all I want to know is if he’s coming Sept. 4 with Ford and McLaughlin… and anyone else.

    • It’s a team effort. Keep on retweeting/favoriting. Helps keep it growing. The recruits like to see the fan involvement too.

  22. Don’t know if this has been mentioned, but this quote from the PAC12 show (as reported by Gina) could be taken as aimed at Collins:

Baldwin said he’s looking for the quarterback that is “consistent on the field in his reads and how he runs his team … he doesn’t have to be spectacular.”

  23. I’m seeing more prospects put the Beavs on the radar, more will stick after our “surprisingly” great season where we end up going bowling.

    • I’ve actually seen some pretty good 2017 guys showing interest. More than 2016 guys. Could be theyre just looking for early offers, but there is some talent checking the Beavs out.

  24. Anyone else watch the pac-12 training camp show on the pac12 network? Interview with Andersen is refreshing. Subtle shots at Riley like, “we inherited a program where almost half the penalties we’re administrative, not acceptable so we’ll clean that up”. I paraphrased but that was the gyst.

  25. I have finished putting together my extensive spreadsheet for the upcoming college football season covering all 128 teams. Feel free to take a look if you wish: this is grading the teams going into each game, and I do my best to update it weekly during the season.

It judges the strength of the team, not where it is in the standings or W-L record. For example, since this is the Beaver board: OSU could beat San Jose State by a field goal and drop in the rankings, because OSU is ranked a lot higher than State, is playing at home, and would be expected to win that game decently. On the flip side, if OSU travels to the Civil War at the end of the season and loses by 10, their ranking points would increase with the current standings as Oregon is currently listed as a massive favorite in that game. Teams are also given more points, or have the potential to lose more points based on road games vs home games, because road games are tougher. The degree of points lost or gained by being at home varies depending on the team, not all HF advantages are created equal: Ohio State and Alabama are going to have larger advantages than Central Michigan and Colorado State.

To read the early outlook for each team, scroll the spreadsheet all the way to the right: You’ll see columns labeled W1-W14, PS, and CH: This designates each week’s game for each team. You will need team schedules to know who the team is playing. The number amount in that team’s box tells you if that team is a favorite or an underdog (positive number is favorite), based on the current standings and by how much down to the decimal.

Example: Alabama’s Week 1 match is with Wisconsin. The numerical value under W1 for Alabama is +5.5. This indicates that Alabama is a 5.5 point favorite in that game using this method. I generally indicate that a spread between -7 and +7 is winnable by either team, under -7 is Don’t Count On It, and over +7 as Not A This Team Should Lose.

Not too thrilled with the outlook it spat out for OSU, but this IS a rebuilding year. First thing to do when in trouble is to figure out how much trouble you’re in. Remember, scroll all the way to the right to see the game calculations.

    • Wow, a lot of information there. Haven’t look at it all yet, but will spend some more time in it.

A word of advice…when I am given a spreadsheet to analyze, if there are errors in cells I kind of tend to lose trust in the work product. And yes, this is mostly just perception and I understand that once data is dropped into the cells the #DIV/0! errors will go away. As a recommendation, using cell O3 as an example, I’d use:

      =iferror(SUM((EU3-EV3)/ER3),0)

This will return a value of zero if the function results in an error. Or:

      =iferror(SUM((EU3-EV3)/ER3),””)

This will return a blank if the function results in an error, Or:

      =iferror(SUM((EU3-EV3)/ER3),”N/A”)

You’ll get whatever text you choose, in this case “N/A.”

Looks like you know your way around Excel, so you probably already know all of this…I spend my life in them…just a minor pet peeve.

      • Like you said, it’ll go away once information is put in. It took me enough time (a full month) to put in all the values for every single game, so that was kind of the least of my worries.

      • I’ve been doing it for several years. I enjoy college football that much. I just recently started using the spreadsheet form to cut out some of the formula redundencies. And yes, I am aware of the #DIV0 errors. They obviously will drop out once game information is entered. Until then it’s an indication that there are no stats there to calculate.

    • @ StarcraftSquall FWIW When I sort the the table based on the name of the team Oregon State goes from being the 79th row to being the 83rd row and the rank column along with others, blows up.

      Like I said, FWIW

      • It’s a weird function in Google Docs, if you adjust the top team in the standings by moving it down, it screws with the entire table. Example: Moving #2 TCU UP one row will not affect the table. Moving #1 Ohio State DOWN will mess with the rank function for the entire spreadsheet. Solution: Sort everything BUT the top team row, and then move it manually.

          • I think I’m hitting somewhere in the 80-85% range as far as predicting the winner. As far as point spreads, well, I don’t care nearly as much about that. Truth is I haven’t tracked it statistically, but it’s been right a lot more than it’s wrong. (The 80-85 is a guess).

  26. Three days into first camp and recruiting whining has intensified along with back seat driving. Whatever happened to evidence based medicine? If you build it they will come…otherwise it is just a carnival.

  27. I agree angry you did call this. But, as a reminder I think you stated that after Marcus McMaryion’s interview for Fall practice that his body language and the way he talked showed him as defeated and conceding. Basically implying that at that point in time you did not believe he would be the starter.

Why do I bring this up? I really don’t know because it really doesn’t change the original prediction. I guess to me it points out a funny irony in life. That when you spend a lot of time commenting and discussing something you are bound to have statements that appear to conflict. I know it happens to me.

    • Yeah I didn’t like his body language. He was hunched over and did seem defeated. And I thought he had to make a move right away in camp and that was a few days later, so that’s when I began to think I was wrong about him.

Collins may still start, too. A lot should be decided today. I just want this all to end and a starter named so the team can progress with that guy
