This email found my inbox this evening. From a source who was at practice:
So I have never been a fan of Seth Collins, always thought he was a jerk but never did anything to really justify that label. Today he did, as you already know Nick Mitchell has worked himself into potential playing time. When I walked by Collins threw a temper tantrum after practice when asked to do interviews (the one day he is available) he yelled at Steve Fenk something along the lines “I ain’t talking to the fucking camera” and then throwing his protein shake down on the ground before storming off the practice field without talking to the press.
Four-More-Years!
I didn’t see if he actually did not do the interviews because I was interviewing another player when that transpired. But based on the lack of Collins quotes from today, I don’t think he did.
That is some kind of leadership and poise, huh? Nick Mitchell could play meaningful time this Saturday. Let’s hope Nick can complete 10 yard passes and conduct interviews.
Here is Mitchell’s resume. It’s good, despite him getting a bad reputation.
MOUNT SI HIGH SCHOOL

Started at safety as a sophomore
And his brother is the starting center.
Is that honestly really true? or is simply the last name just the same? (please don’t mess with me)
It’s true
Awesome. Past the ‘neat’ family line. There is some real possible synergy there. Center Mitchell may try harder with little bro on the line. Deeper level of communication. Etc… I’m all for this experiment. StHC needs some time for introspection anyways.
StHC? Headless Chicken……or…..Head Case.
StHC^2
How about that ever-so-slight touch of the balls required to take a snap? That’s going to be one awkward thanksgiving.
Its technically called, sibling bonding….. but mom and dad will be in tears….
They did in the bunk bed for years.

LOLOLOLOLOL. Watch til the end. Fuckin’ lol
How much do you think correlates with Crowton’s arrival? is it just coincidence that Crowton arrives and Mitchell moves up the depth chart?
And Collins throws a fit….
At least it was a completion.
So that’s how he learned to throw all those passes to the ground at the receivers feet
Not sure that it’s why Crowton was brought in, but it certainly is convenient.
GA and his staff heavily recruit Seth Collins and tell him about how much they believe in him and how great he can be in the Pac-12.
Then the season starts and he pretty much sucks, but GA and staff can’t simply say that to a prima donna Freshman because then he’ll completely check out and become a complete cancer.
So, Crowton comes in, and his from his “objective perspective” sees that perhaps a change in QB will help the team. GA uses Crowton as a scapegoat and tells Seth that Mitchell’s going to get a chance. GA tells Seth that he still believes in him, and that as long as he works hard and keeps trying to get better, good things will happen.
Keeps Seth engaged, but opens the door for Mitchell without blowing up the relationship between Seth and GA/coaches.
Sounds about right.
But I’m not confident Collins will remain engaged. More likely he’ll slam his protein shake again, pout, and look to transfer.
Or he will work harder to get it right. Might be win, win….
Either way, if the above is true, which I also think it is, its a good move….
Oh ya, well Gary Anderson turned me into a newt.
At least it wasn’t Hillary…
No kidding, right?
Did you get better?
I did. BURN HER ANYWAY!
How?! TELL ME!
If Garretson or anyone else wins the starting job, I can’t seem him sticking around and converting to WR or other. Maybe back to SJSU?
This is kind of weird because it’s a media person emailing Angry.
Any guesses of who it is? I’m guessing it’s an OSU in house media person.
Why is that weird?
I’ve always talked with the media. Schnell, Buker, Eggers…all of them and more.
Generally media people aren’t sources. Why give up stories that would generate buzz that their outlets would want to write first?
Because they lose access to players and coaches. You really think the people around practice tell all? They also want to spin a narrative that keeps fans engaged and hopeful, not negatives…you should know this after what we went through with Riley.
Go tell Goe.
Shhhhh……thats who it IS….(a secret love affair….)
Angry and Momma Muchado love tryst. Who would have thunk it?
Wouldn’t that be sword fighting?
Then why send the email? Clearly they wanted the information out there but wouldn’t publish it themselves. Why not send it to Canzano? He writes hit pieces all the time. He’s not going to lose his media access.
I can’t answer questions for other people. If you want I can ask.
My GUESS is there are some tidbits for print, and some more interesting/gossipy that a paper doesn’t want to print or investigate. It might also be difficult to prove the person saw this, etc. There are other reasons regarding reputations and such. Use your imagination. I trust what I was told, so I’m fine with it as is. Some stuff I get I throw out. Sometimes a source will tell me I don’t have permission to write about the info, etc. Everything varies. I can’t answer your question to satisfaction without getting into AB internal affairs. The recruiting arm of AB gets a lot of info, too, btw. We’re specifically told not to talk about many things that we’re told.
“The recruiting arm of AB gets a lot of info, too, btw. We’re specifically told not to talk about many things that we’re told.”
Don’t you find that odd? Like maybe it’s gossip or bullshit or some chatty Kathy can’t keep their mouth shut and shouldn’t be talking?
Sending rumors to blog sites is the best way to spread them because there are no repercussions for writing about rumors or embarrassing stories.
I suppose, but think of it this way. Your a recruit, you want to make a public statement about your intent, even thou you told a school that you will be attending. Then some shit head passes that info on to random people.. blogs and what have you. Killing something that you think is important to you, especially in this age of instant news via Twitter and Facebook. It’s morally bankrupt. How does a kid trust a program after something like that. It’s a dick move.
And angry this isn’t an indictment of this site, everything here seems on the up & up.
There is more to the recruiting side of things than you guys see. The sources on par with any major site now. I’m not talking about kids tweeting things and we take it as fact. Things have evolved, though that’s still a part of it.
It’s not odd for reasons I won’t get into.
You can believe what you want. I’m not going try to convince you.
You don’t have to, I trust you. I’m just asking questions.
“We’re specifically told not to talk about many things that we’re told”
The first rule of angrybeavs is YOU DO NOT TALK about angrybeavs.
The second rule of angrybeavs is YOU DO NOT TALK about angrybeavs
The third rule of angrybeavs is Colorado All F’ing Day or whatever the fuck he chooses his username to be in a given week (although it generally has something to do with the beavs upcoming opponent) likes to play hide the sausage with farm animals while Ralphie watches. I have it on good authority but cannot divulge my source. Ok, it’s his dad. Who coincidentally is named Ralphie.
Ha, speaking of that troll, can you track his ip address and tell were he’s coming form? I’d love to nail some shit stabbing duck!
Why do we care who it is?
If it weren’t a credible source I wouldn’t post it. It’s credible and verified. Speculating and trying to out people will only make them not want to share in the future, so I’d drop it.
I sincerely hope this information gets back to the coaching staff if it hasn’t already. If this is true, sounds like someone could use an attitude adjustment
If this did happen, I have a hard time believing that no one in the media would mention it. And like someone already posted, your “source” has an established bias against Seth which basically shoots down any credibility to this post. Not like it has any credibility to begin with since the only place this is being talked about is on this blog.
Then don’t believe it. See how much I care.
Well, Gina did say Collins declined interview requests Wednesday. Is that a sufficient second source?
.
No. Give me a source with a similar tale. Not silence.
You know what they say about assumptions.
So demanding. I’m afraid you’ll just have to remain skeptical, which is your prerogative.
I’m really not skeptical, I can see this kind of thing happening with collins. But…..the source’s first sentence tells the real story, “I don’t like collins, period”. Take out the first sentence….and say I’ve got an intresting story about collins from practice for you….. then you got me. Hook. Line. And sinker.
I would like a second source. It’s not that I don’t believe it, it’s because the authors bias was stated in the first sentence.
It kind of corrupts the whole e-mail. I mean an anonymous source who starts an email like that has an agenda.
Well it’s not anonymous. Still need a second source.
Que to Angry…..make up another one!
I for one, believe it. Why would a journalist lie…..I mean, that’s preposterous….
Brian Williams is that you?
This kind of behavior is why freshman should be off limits to the media. They need to learn how to deal with the media and know what’s required of them. 18 year old freshman are not mature men.
It’s he 19? Not that it makes a difference.
Interesting. Who needs media credentials?!
Disappointed with the front of the new VFC changes. Went from super cool and eye catching with all open glass to half of it boring as molasses as a plain solid brick wall. Not sure what the AD is thinking. Could have made a statement with visiting recruits and now you just see some glass on the left where you walk in instead of a grand sight line welcoming to OSU Football.
WTF are they gonna take it from awesome to mediocre? The backside is the highlight now. Looks like there will be a pavilion above the main north endzone seating.
How did you hear about this?
I just saw the pics on the website. The plans look like shit. We have one of the nicest looking campuses in the country with great architecture and they come up with this? The endzone is the worst. What a disappointment.
@beavergopher when were you going to tell us about this?? Riley holding the “trophy” wow

the story behind it is just as awesome. For the record, I like Pelini and he got a raw deal in Lincoln

Holy shit, that’s funny. I’m in tears. The lion king one got me.
Maybe Riley could start his own tradition, and bring in Droppy Dog. It would match his enthusiasm for coaching.

Someone light that chair on fire, and in two years Riley’ll be sitting on it
Glad you liked it. It is pretty funny. Here is the whole story with the tweet thread.

It really doesn’t matter which qb you start. They’re all equally undesirable for most offenses.
That’s pretty funny if one of them is throwing temper tantrums and smoothies. Sounds like what you’d see at a preschool.
Beaver “Nation” : where toothless fans, clueless coaches, and 2* talent come together

he’d probably prefer an anal fisting. From Ralphie
“Hugs not Anal Fistings” :) Or was it “Hugs not Drugs”, I keep getting it mixed up
It’s a little sad how you show up out of the blue just to insult us. I feel like you might have been bullied as a child. Or more likely you are still being bullied and this is your only outlet. You know you can can get help for that?
” As a 4* recruit, I have decided to take my talents to the University of Colorado” said no one ever.
I’m confused why commenters here are thinking that the media isn’t a good “inside source” for tidbits like this. this isn’t exactly some kind of hot topic story and they’re not TMZ running exposes on players so this information isn’t valuable to them. He could be biased, who knows. If that did happen it does highlight the maturity issues and it isn’t too surprising either.
Man, you really don’t like Seth Collins, huh?
I kid, I kid, this is highly immature of him if true. I would rather have McMaryion get all the backup snaps than Mitchell though.
Kid WANTS to be in front of the camera, this story is BS
Nick M. Sucks straight up BTW, let Collins take the beating this year
How in the hell do you know? How does anyone here really know how good a qb MM or NM are as qb’s? Because they didn’t look good in the spring game? Who fucking cares. It was a vanilla glorified practice after they had 2.5 weeks to learn a new offense. What we do know is STG is fast but sucks as a Qb. We know both MM and NM were solid high school qb’s, with better numbers, higher ratings and more offers then STG. Who knows, maybe Mitchell is heady and has a little Kellen Moore in him. Nothing flashy but good enough to limit mistakes and get the ball out to his play makers. How long will any Qb last taking 23 hits a game. Running backs don’t need to throw so when their arms/shoulders get banged up they can still play.
STG is a great athlete. Good runner with the ball, but makes the wrong decision about 5 out of 7 times as far as I can tell. Most important player cannot be one of the weakest links.
This comment should get a bazillion thumbs up
Early on, GA made a lot of comments about the mindset and emotions of his players. I think part of the decision to go with Pollo Loco was his athleticism, but I think his fiery competitiveness played a role as well. The guy definitely has a top-end competitive streak, even if he has a hard time reining it in.
MM and NM come across as being much more modest and reserved (typical Riley QB recruits), so that may have been perceived as a lack of competitive drive.
‘Pollo Loco’ is genius.
I would like to see NM get some snaps. I’m one of those guys who thinks QBs should be athletic enough to move out of the way, occasionally run when there is lots of green space, and give the ball to other people, preferably 10 to 20 yards down the field.
Oh, and by “other people” I mean those with the same color shirt.
But… but… hurdles.
Ha whatever you say homer, don’t cry like a little bitch when Mitchel shits the bed. Kid sucks
Why would he? SC sucks too. Tomato/tomato
Collins can run.
I really don’t get the ‘Give McMaryion and Mitchell a chance!’ drumbeat around here. The fact is, zero of our QB’s can throw the ball. One of them can run.
That’s who starts.
And we know this how?
FTR… MM has shown that he can throw better than SC can because he stays in the pocket and reads more than his first receiver. Are they good? Not yet… if they ever will be. They’re not wobbly ducks, hospital passes into triple coverage or low (or high) and behind over the middle. So that right there makes them better all by themselves.
But you’re right, MM can’t run. We have zero clue what NM can do. Spring ball is no measure for current ability. We only know what we are seeing on te field right now.
MM was rated high as a dual threat QB. Did he get slower? At one point he could run. He might just look slow compared to StHC^2, but maybe in the flow of offense he’d be fine. Same goes for Mitchell.
Question: does it matter if the QB runs for 20 yards, or passes for 12 and runs for 8? I’d argue the latter is better, if we’re being honest. Collin’s running is over valued.
MM can run, get your facts straight
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Albert Einstein-
Einstein never said that by most accounts, and secondly that is NOT the definition of insanity. I hate that false quote. It’s everywhere and so wrong.
But….you get the point….right?
The point is lost when you misattribute both the definition of your point and the fallacious source.
That’s the point.
And that’s constructive, not a beat down. We need to better here.
Fart and penis.
*Rita Mae Brown in a 1983 novel, adopted from a 1981 Narcotics Anonymous pamphlet
Also, it’s not the definition of insanity by a long shot. It’s the definition of perseveration.
Einstein would have known that.
Anything is a dildo….if your brave enough.

That’s definitely brave.
Why cause he had two bad ROAD games? If there was a better QB I say play him, but there isn’t. MM IMO was our best shot from the beginning, but now it’s so jumbled NM is getting in the mix for God knows why
I don’t get all the concern about the source. Who cares? Gossip is good, gossip is right. Collins has “punkish” personality attributes. Seems within the realm of possibility that he’s pissed about Mitchell, Crowton or just that D-1 football is harder than he thought it would be.
Reality is setting in…..maybe.
Wow, Cliff with a piece on Mitchell. I forgot Cliff existed. Lol. Gotta say, Mitchell is likable. Great attitude.
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-mitchell-back-in-the-mix-at-qb/article_e3e7d494-19bf-5bd1-b0b4-6e6e97afbf0a.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Who is Cliff?
Never mind, that is Kevin Hampton, whoever that is. I thought Cliff was back at the GT
Cliff is in Salem now after getting kicked out of Bama for life.
Uppity Yankee with all his front teeth.
I’ve seen this post for two days and wanted to say something about sister cousins. I’m not that clever.
she said, “I’m the best kisser in town! Daddy says so!
Hampton is hilarious; a journalist who either despises or fears paragraphs. That article is a rare exception as there might there might be a few multi-sentence “paragraphs” in there, but even those are two sentences long. Check out his articles and see how consistently he writes with one-sentence lines. It is one of the oddest writing styles I’ve seen accepted in a newspaper.
I doubt I will ever read the GT again, but if I do, I’ll check for it.
Sounds like his attitude and head are in the right place. Not hoping for Collins to get seriously injured or anything, but I really hope Mitchell is able to get a few drives to work with and develop a rhythm against Colorado. Would be nice to see what he has to offer at the position.
Agreed. Plus, it’s our turn to have a backup QB come in and play lights-out against someone else!
”He just continues to be doing everything right,” Baldwin said. “You can ask him any question and he’ll get it right as he directed people out there (Wednesday). He just does things right.”
I would rather have this than athleticism at QB.
So Then, Mannion?
Sophomore year Mannion.
I don’t think Mannion ever really regressed from his sophomore year, the talent around him just wasn’t as good as it was that year (I mean, he had two NFL receivers to throw to). He just never took the next step after that season, which was disappointing. Hope to see him get a shot in the NFL at aome point, he definitely has the arm and work ethic for it.
All he has to do is beat out Nick Foles. He may get a shot next year.
No offense Angry, but this whole ragging on Collins shit is pretty lame. Kid is a true freshman, what did you really expect him to do? Heisman his first year? 80% completion? Also, why the fuck does everyone want to see our 3rd string QB get reps? They are just trying to light a fire under Collins. Offense just put up the highest point total of the year it’s our D that is fucking us over and making us play from behind. We are not a passing team anymore get used to it, our bread and butter is pounding the rock not trying to hit slants. If your source is credible throw out a name other wise this is fucking middle school girl gossip bullshit IMO.
Collins has shown no ability to read beyond his first target. Reading the D is the most important job of a QB.
To expect him to make that jump as a passer is unreasonable.
Everyone who watched his HS film and saw him in the spring knew he was a very raw passer. His high school stats proved that out. Only passed for 1,012 yards with 12 TDs and 5 Ints with a 47% completion rate his senior year.
Obviously the ideal situation for him would have been to redshirt him but no other QB stepped up.
I am not as worried about the passing as I am the decision making. You can get by fine at the college level as a mediocre passer if you make the right reads.
If you talk to BeaverGopher, he said Andersen went through this same issue in Wisconsin. Fell in love with an athletic QB who bombed, then had to revert to the old, boring passing QB and WI began winning games.
StHC is a big reason the D is on the field so much and always tired. Not that the D is great, but they’d probably be giving up high 20s/low 30s and not 40 or 50 if the offense could convert more. This is just one of the obvious reasons QB is the most important position, and right now, one of our worst players is starting there.
He’ll probably look respectable vs CO and delay this process more. It’s almost like Collins is the new Riley. As soon as it is obvious there should be change, he will pull something out of his ass to delay the obvious and inevitable.
And yet we’re told GA doesn’t make offensive decisions?
I still think the D cannot allow 45 in a game let alone a half
*sigh*
Actually, if you take away the kick return that score is not the high point of the season.
Not sure it’s Collins hate, but the kid seems to be regressing. Maybe opposing defenses have ‘the book’ on him with enough film to take away what good he was able to showcase. The bottomline is he doesn’t seem to be improving, and THAT puts more pressure on the defense, not that they are lighting it up either.
I think the thing I am most curious about the posted ‘report’ is why would StHC care if Mitchell moved ahead of MM? I mean it doesn’t sound like he’s been replaced, so why give a shit who is backing him up?
Because he can now see they are looking to replace him…. that he isnt cutting it…..
I expect he himself thought he could do it….be great right away. And it hasnt happened, and the staff moving Mitchell up, makes it obvious even if nothing is said to Collins, that he might be on the way down. So its easy to be pissed about that….
If Mitchell gets some reps, and does well, while Collins continues to struggle, what do you think is going to happen?
Well, NM is now the 2nd string QB, so apparently he’s showing improvement in practice. And you’re crazy if you don’t want him to get any reps in a game. StCH running 23 times a game isn’t helping his passing ability at all and it’s going to get him injured. So when that happens and you have a backup QB with no game experience then you’re just winging it. That would be poor planning and poor coaching.
EXCEPT for we don’t pound the Rock! There is no pounding at all. We are like the nun’s and priests of college football. We do not pound. 80% of our run plays come off of read options where Seth keeps. This is a huge reason for the offensive inconsistencies. Baldwin / Crowton need to do more of exactly what you said which is pound the rock with designed run plays To Woods, Nall, Haskins Brown. These dudes are all solid to good backs.
Its way past time to let them show it.
The lack of Nallball is a mystery to me. Dunno what goes on practice but in brief game appearances RN has done well. Even if he only gains a yard or 2, he’s certain to have worn down the opposition for the next play.
My guess is conditioning. He’s a big guy, not sure how many plays in a row he can stay in there. If he gets down to a weight around 215 or so, he could see the field more.
215 is probably too light. Need him at around 230. to do what we need.
Haven’t seen him look tired since dropping the 15lbs he’s already cut.
Did anyone else take notice of that long run he had where he bounced it to the outside, but it got called back for a hold. Kid has good speed once he gets up to it. Was pulling away from smaller guys. He looked so pissed when he saw it got called back. He popped up like wanted the ball again and was ready to run through a wall.
Really looks like he could be another Toby Gearheart, but with maybe a little higher top end speed. NEED TO POUND THE ROCK!!!
Yup I saw that when he gets moving he has break away speed. Its impressive. Not as impressive as my rams Todd Gurley (who is 230 himself) but still impressive nonetheless. Gurley gets to his 4.4 speed withing the first few strides. With some acceleration improvement (this can be worked on) Nall has the potential to be a beast.
Andersen has said people don’t fully appreciate Nall’s open field speed because they hadn’t seen it yet….so give him more opportunities, lets see it!
Saying he’s a true frosh is irrational. He’s the starting QB on a Pac 12 team. He needs to lead, play and act like one. He has not thus far. The answer for everyone else on the team who fails to do this is to sit and let the next guy give it a shot. There is no way to be certain of what we will see until the next guy comes in when the lights are on. If he also sucks, then it is what it is.
Would you then make excuses for the next guy with, “He’s a redshirt frosh who has never taken a snap. What did you expect?”
This reminds me of when Derek Anderson was sucking and everybody was crying out for Ryan Gunderson. Put in Gunderson! How bad could he be?! There was a reason a poorly performing DA wasn’t replaced by Gunderson, he was worse at playing football than he was at whatever make-work job they gave him in the athletic department.
Most popular guy on the team is always the backup QB.
The difference is that there was never any competition between DA and Gundy. DA was always the clear starter.
El Pollo Loco wasn’t named the starter after the first game, and the only thing that separated him from MM were some hurdles and the fact that MM was judged on two bad passes.
“El Pollo Loco.” I like that….has that been sticking? Used elsewhere on this board?
?
I don’t remember that. DA would certainly do some dumb stuff. And DE’s time management against ASU didn’t really help matters. His only losing season was one where he didn’t start. His first year with Riley was a head-scratcher for the first half of the year because it was apparent he was not yet the kind of QB who could take over a game… and SJax was so so very good but not getting the ball enough… until he did and we started to win.
Then with Dwight Wright a Riley pattern of chalking up 3 losses before October started to emerge. But that wasn’t an Anderson thing. We again either wouldn’t or couldn’t run the ball.
And his senior year was more of the same. But he went out on a great note.
But I don’t remember anyone ever suggesting Gundy be the starter… not even after Anderson left.
we all saw how awesome of a QB Gundy was in the civil war “fog bowl”game. I think that was after Matt Moore got injured? I forget the year. 2005 maybe? Gunderson’s first pass was a pick 6. We all know how that game turned out
2005 is correct, against Stanford I think. I remember when Matt Moore got hurt the student section cheered (idiots) and I was thinking, “Oh shit, Gunderson can’t throw more than 10 yards downfield without the ball taking the trajectory of a rainbow.”
Seemed to end up working out for Cal with Goff
What? That he could only run, and that’s why he played (and was benched) during his frosh season?
As in, he too played like a 18 year old kid his first year and is now considered by many to be a potential #1 pick
An 18 year old kid who took over for the worst team in the league who still threw for 3500 yards on 60% completion percentage and had 18 td’s to 10 ints against the 4th toughest schedule in the country.
Collins is on pace to throw for half of that with and only 12 tds and 8 picks.
True, passing is a larger part of Cal’s offense, but a lot of that is because they have QB’s who can throw the ball. Combined they rushed for 1,466. We’re on pace to rush for 2,200.
Yep, nobody is making excuses for any other freshman. It just shows it’s emotional investment in Collins by some of the fanbase. These are the same people who supported Riley to the bitter end.
Gunderson was clearly awful, which is why D.A. played. Anyone calling for Gunderson had no eye for talent. Mitchell and MM aren’t as bad as Gunderson, so they should get more serious looks. It took six weeks to learn what Collins is. So it will take more than 20 passes or spring games to know what MM or Mitchell are.
GA is being stubborn. My guess is he wants to make a change, but fears Collins could transfer somewhere (Oregon?) and become great, so he wants to be absolutely sure. But, he is falling for the temptress that is athleticism.
There’s a reason 126 out of 128 teams didn’t offer him as a QB. I don’t think he’ll be transferring elsewhere AND become great. Especially not within the conference where he’d have to sit 2 years.
True, regarding Oregon. But I do think GA wants to be absolutely sure before bailing on him.
Athleticism = temptress.
People get lured.
It is like the good, normal guy who will fall for a hot batshit crazy psycho…just because she is hot. Certain things just lure people, even thought we know they are awful, because we think people will change or we can somehow manage. Rarely works that way.
All the guys saying “true freshman”, “he’s athletic”, “he hurdles” are buying the sizzle and passing on the steak. Including GA.
Maybe if we made a PSA, nice guys would stop falling for guano loco in babe’s clothing? ;)
>All the guys saying “true freshman”, “he’s athletic”, “he hurdles” are buying the sizzle and passing on the steak. Including GA.
But there is no steak, not on this team. At least not eligible.
The defense has been put in a really bad position because the offense can’t stay on the field for more than 4 plays in a row. It makes a huge difference when you are on the field 65% of the game. The problem resides primarily on the offensive side but the D-line is so bad they make the entire defense look worse than it is. Collins is displaying poor leadership and is making very poor decisions on the field. Some of it should be attributed to him being a true freshman but it would be reach to say he would every become a top 6 pac-12 quarterback given his current production at any point in the future.
It’s OK to be critical of your team, don’t get your panties in a bunch. Without critics the status quo would never change.
They always say having a running QB lets you play 11 on 11 instead of 10 on 11. If seems like with Seth only looking for 1 read every play and then taking off running is like playing 7 on 11.
The QB leadership / captain role should be earned not given. The players and their positions and what they bring to the game and team should be respected by the QB not over looked not out shined. Players bring many needed talents like Strength, some bring Power, Speed, Vision, Unity,
leadership, Maturity, ect. ALL positions must be respected by allowing them all to showcase their talents in the games. I’m just saying” Come on Maaan”
So….Paul Lucas for QB?
Weeeeell hey anything is possible but lots of these players and many others have been followed since pop warnner & club track such Greats in Az such as M. Wheaton, J. Hines, J. Strong, W. Payne, B, Perkins ect. & many others posses the skills to win championships and be taught by these
great coaches to make it to the next level baby!!!

To the hardcore Collins backers: what have you seen out of him to believe he will eventually get “it”? For this offense, he does none of the important things well. So far, he has not shown the ability to progress through his receiving options. The passing game doesn’t have to be exceptional, but it does need to keep the defense honest so they don’t stack the box. He doesn’t even run the read-option that well. I could handle a few missed reads, but he’s not sticking with the option long enough to force the free d. end/linebacker to commit, pulling the ball too early. I heard he ran this offense in high school, so I was high on him early in the year, but I’m just not seeing enough to warrant sticking with him in a season that is already lost.
I have said it before and say it again: if any of the QBs on the roster is the starter in 2017 and going forward, that means the coachinh staff has failed to recruit the position adequately.
His performance at Stanford.
Andersen has said his qb’s need to be able to win [paraphrasing] “with their arm, their legs, and their brain.”
Seth clearly does not meet 2 of those 3 criteria, and only partially meets the ‘running’ critiera. Yes, he has the ability to run, has speed, but his decisions are poor, and he underutilizes the RBs.
I don’t think there needs to be a long or ongoing debate about this when Collins meets less than 1/3 of the primary criteria the head coach has set forth since the beginning. The next question obviously is, can the other QBs on the roster? It may be that none of them can.
The staff’s ability to recruit a legitimate D1 QB has come under question on this board (apparently Mason Moran cannot throw well?).
In the meantime, and in the long term, it would be great to see Andersen follow through on the “power running” he wants.
(apparently Mason Moran cannot throw well?)
He’s completing 63% of his passes, 14 TD and 5 picks, his arm action and release look good, he obviously needs to gain some weight and strength, but anybody who says he can’t throw hasn’t been paying attention.
I agree he looks solid to me but I guess people are doubting what he can do
I’ve seen various comments on this board that were not complimentary of his throwing skills. I haven’t seen him play.
People need to keep in mind Mason Moran was dealing with a hand injury in his first couple of games this year. I think we’d need to find stats from his most recent games to really grade his abilities.
He has Harry, a 5-star WR and the #2 ranked WR in the entire Country. He also has one of the top ranked RBs. Both are visiting OSU Saturday, so if they come with Moran, I like his chances a lot better.
Did you watch Moran when he played on TV? I think that’s what most of us are basing it on. He missed a lot of easy passes that game and looked bad. I believe Harry was injured that game, too…
I’m unsure about Moran. That’s my assessment right now. See the pretty good stats, but there’s some questions, too.
Interesting note here on Moran:
http://www.sports360az.com/2015/06/chandlers-moran-commits-to-pac-12-program/
He has a rare blood disorder that makes it harder for him to fight of infection.
That TV game, vs Bishop Gorman would be a tough one to base an assessment on. First play of the game, Chandler running back Chase Lucas injures his knee and is out for the game. Moran also had his hand injured in that game, so he was laboring to throw the ball much. The injury required stitches, which he eventually recovered from within a few weeks. This is partially why he was trying to run so much in that game, and the next couple of games.
In addition to that, Bishop Gorman is the #1/#2 ranked Highschool team in the nation. He was essentially playing against an all-star team defense.
He hasn’t put together a 2015 highlight film yet, so the sample size of throws on film right now are essentially back up time from last year, and that tv game vs Bishop Gorman.

Related, the Chandler connection would be great not only this year, if they can land Lucas and/or Harry, but also next year. Kolby Taylor is a Junior WR on their team, and is the most productive player they have this year after Harry. He’s the nephew of 49er John Taylor and his brother is a Jacksonville Jaguar, Kerry Taylor. (Also has an Oregon State offer)

Video of Mike Parker and machado talkin beavs visitors on CSNNW.
Does anybody else think it’s odd mike parker is allowed to talk recruiting? Being that he works for the school? Does he talk about recruiting on the Joe Beaver show? I dont usually listen.
Also, is that video board really necessary? It’s awesome to see 4 names get dragged from one screen to another. Really enhances the segment…..
http://www.csnnw.com/video_content_type/oregon-state-recruiting-update
I believe Parker is employed by Learfield Sports or whoever, not the school.
I think GA’s plan was to go with the QB he wanted for the future, in the hopes of the player developing throughout the season…. I’ve been a big defender of SC because you can just see the potential this guy has… Obviously he hasn’t been improving and even may be regressing at this point… And if this is true about his tantrum, he’s not the guy you want leading your offense… I think because of this it’s forced GA too look at other options and I don’t think MM is that great or he would have made a move sooner… Sounds like Mitchell is progressing and that’s why we are hearing about him getting a chance
I don’t think MM is that great or he would have made a move sooner
People need to get over this mindset already.
Tom Brady sat behind Brian Greise, Steve Young behind Montana, and the list goes on and on. It’s enormous. Because a guy is 2 or 3 doesn’t mean he isn’t good or even great. What is so difficult to understand about this?
Seniority, perception, experience, politics (a coach is tied to a certain guy), etc etc etc can all determine depth chart. The idea QB is a meritocracy is nuts.
Now, maybe MM and NM both suck. But it’s not because they are listed as 2 or 3. I wish people would drop that. MM was once 7th, then 2nd, now he’s 3rd. I suggest people read up on depth charts and some historical examples and use common sense.
The depth chart is not always right, but he depth chart is usually right.
Can I conclusively say the back ups are bad? No.
Can I say they’re most likely bad? Yes.
The depth chart was usually wrong under Riley, for like a decade, too, so I find this fascinating coming from a Beaver fan.
You’re right it is common sense, that’s why MM is not playing… You think GA wants to lose all these games, hell no…. You think he would play a less capable QB over a better QB, I highly doubt that, that’s nonsense… None of us are at practice, so none of us have a clue… It just makes no sense to play a QB that’s not your best… My common sense tells me GA is doing what’s best for the team and just doesn’t have a lot of options
I’m sure that was what Michigan fans said when Lloyd Carr played Griese over Tom Brady. And hundreds of other fan bases. You clearly didn’t take my comment to heart, and you are still spewing the same rhetoric.
Now some idiot will show up and say I am saying MM or NM is Tom Brady. Just watch! My readers are so disappointing sometimes.
Ha!
angry is saying that GA would start SC over Tom Brady because of politics.
When your comparison points for McMaryion are two of the greatest QBs to ever play the game, you have to expect that kind of criticism. Besides, those guys sat behind proven commodities, whereas we really don’t know what any of the current QBs has to offer long term. Collins just doesn’t look good in the limited play we’ve seen, so we should see if anything better is available in the current group.
Really?! Lol… Griese led them to an undefeated season and was 17-5 as a starter…. Not only that Brady was 7th on the depth chart at that time… Quite a different situation that your comparing there… We have three unproven freshman QB’s not an established winning starter like Michigan had… Your reaching on this one Angry… You can question my logic but yours brings up questions too
17-5 was bad at Michigan back then
I guess an undefeated season and rose bowl win was bad too?! Before my time tho, I guess standards were different
This has become a ridiculously stupid argument. Griese was most likely the better QB at that time, Brady just happened to actually end up in a great landing spot with the Pats and developed into a better QB. This does not mean he was always better.
Pete Carroll started Leinart over Cassel, won a national title and a Heisman. Cassel is clearly the better pro but Leinart was very likely the better QB at USC.
Actually, that’s not true. Michigan fans thought Griese got the nod because his father was in the booth with Keith calling games. The D is why that team went undefeated. There’s a reason Charles Woodson won the Heisman that year… not the QB of the undefeated co-national champions.
Griese was known to only be slightly better than Driesback (sp?). They went back and forth over a couple years before Griese won it outright. But Brady was always there, biding his time. Carr just had zero clue what he had. He didn’t know what he had when he platooned Brady the next year by insisting on splitting QB play by quarters. Brady had to save that team quite often in the fourth quarter because of the poor coaching decisions made.
He’s talked about the chip on his shoulder he carries still because his coaches at Michigan screwed him and then he dropped so far in the draft.
That’s all correct.
Also, Kurt Warner is another backup who was clearly better than the starter. Trent Green was ahead of him. Warner was considered a nobody, but is likely going to the HOF.
Bulger wound up being pretty good, too, but I forget if he was the backup.
Don Majkowski started ahead of Brett Farve.
Anyway, the list is enormous, and the idea that the starter is always the best QB is funny.
Majkowski ahead of Favre was calculated, like when Carson Palmer was deliberately benched for one year before playing him at Cincy. Majik was a decent QB with leadership and experience on that team. Favre was just gained in trade and still trying to figure out the correct ratio of beer to cheese. But Holmgren knew what he had in Favre. That’s why Ty Detmer remained on the bench when Majik went down.
Here we go again… No one said just because SC is the starter, it automatically makes him the better QB… I am saying that the way that it has played out, that is probably the case… Like I said I can’t imagine GA not playing the player that is the most capable, I just don’t buy that… I am sure there are some politics at Or St but no where near the politics you see Michigan or USC, two examples you brought up… Not to mention almost every QB you mentioned became a pro… I don’t see any of our QB’s being a pro as they stand… Besides this is a first year coach, with a bunch of freshman QB’s, losing games, I don’t think GA has time for politics
Like I said I can’t imagine GA not playing the player that is the most capable
Talk to Wisconsin fans about how he handled Stave. I’m not sure why you find this so hard to believe since he’s already done it before.
If NM and MM get shots and stink, then go back to Collins. This QB situation should be easy: try the other guys for a legit chunk of time, and if they stink, go back and groom Collins as a backup for next season.
You’re right he’s done that before, but this is a quite a different situation… In that situation it sounded like Stave was a clear leader in practice, None of OSU QB’s are head and shoulders above… Also it sounded like the receivers whisky had were not great and Andersen wanted a mobile QB to add another dimension…. Plus the core of that team was not built for spread, so it didn’t work out so well… I totally understand your points Angry, I just think this is a much different situation… I would be right with you if one of the QB’s has shown to be superior to SC… We haven’t seen that yet, granted it’s a small sample size but usually you can tell if a QB is far superior and MM hasn’t shown that… I am hoping NM has progressed and can hold it down… If SC plays like he did last week, I think Mitchell will get significant time… I’ve never said I’ve liked our offense 100% with SC, he’s just shown me the most potential but I’ll be hating on GA if SC plays bad and he doesn’t give NM a chance.
I’m not sure you supported your argument or that of what is supposed to be contrary.
My bad, it was Henson I was thinking of. The uber athlete who looked the part…
http://www.si.com/vault/2012/01/09/106148035/tom-brady-as-you-forgot-him
Griese was mediocre, though:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Griese#College_passing_statistics
Anyway, there are a ton of examples like this. Go read about them, or just revisit Riley’s depth charts..
It’s possible that SC being Andersen’s recruit could affect judgment.
Am pretty sure he was Baldwin’s recruit at CSU, chose SJSU over CSU offer, then flipped to OSU when Andersen and Baldwin came to OSU.
Ur right!

Nice camera work. Nice Bokeh.
I learned a new word today
As we all know, Michael Conforto is playing in the World Series and you know he played in the CWS, but did you know he also played in the little league world series? One of only 3 guys to ever participate in all 3.
Who are the other 2?
Jason Varitek and Ed Vosberg
Which is surprising given his lack of defense.
PHIL STEELE REPORT:
OSU has won both meetings as P12 rivals. Both teams enter this game
searching for their first conference win of the ssn as they have identical 0-3
records. Colorado is avg 448 ypg and QB Liufau has really started to heat up
as he is avg 364 pass ypg over the L/2 gms. The Beavers are all’g 551 ypg in
conference action and have my #69 ranked pass eff D in the nation. My
computer is calling for Buff’s to win by just under a td and I’ll agree with that
as the Colorado will end the nations longest conference losing streak this
week.

Why is it every time these productions get posted the opposing team always has the coaching edge? Macentyer (sp) has shown very little in the 3 years at CU other than he can shout down and cuss out his assistant coaches on the sidelines.
He’s Pelini without the wins.
It’s bullshit. According to his numbers, Mike McIntyre is a better coach than Mike Leach. At least against us, by 0.35
I can answer that. It’s because this is a coaching staff in its first year with basically no data to go on. This always happens when there’s a coaching change, that team is immediately dropped to the bottom of the league in coaching rank in its first season. New schemes to install, new systems, new tendencies to learn. This is just my guess. Before you start complaining about the stats, McIntyre does have more wins at Colorado than Andersen does at Oregon State. Give it time.
That experience ranking on us, 120. Is that mean like the least experienced team in the nation? I knew we were top 10ish
There are 128 FBS teams in the country.
If there is no data to go on, then don’t draw a conclusion.
Oh wait, then he’d have nothing to write about and get clicks.
There can be no void type in his VoID.
Clicks? This is a subscription release. There’s a reason he’s been the most accurate forecaster the last two decades.
That immediately looks like a contrived data set. Last two decades? Who was out there before ten years ago? Lindy’s? S&S? SI? Are those the only comparators?
In the last decade, he is certainly not the best predictor of even the few comparators I note. In the last five years, he’s behind them all… except probably SI.
And let’s not fool ourselves here. All of them fail in both mean square and absolute error compared to the betting line… always. There are many algorithms who have become prevalent in the last decade who are far more accurate, likely because they dismiss all subjective bullshit like “coaching value” or how pre-season rankings affect (and constantly affect) SoS calculations. Algorithms like Stat Fox, Atomic and Pigskin are much more accurate… much much more. And even they don’t beat the betting line.
heh heh… minus all the math you want losers. Steele is nothing but a paid hack to make you lose money. Vegas loves the shut out of him… and so do morons.
If you bet along the betting lines, you still lose. There’s a reason they make millions upon billions and you’re not rich.
DUH!!!!!?

This from a comment on a GT article about Crowton:
Beavs going to fire Baldwin after season and make Crowton the Offensive Coordinator. Hearing reports of assistants not working well with Mr. Baldwin. Not a good thing.
Hard to know if this guy is on to something, but it does tie in with the story of Crowton coming here where Baldwin is seldom mentioned in the process.
Also, and a bit late, the previous discussion of scotty’s appearance on the JoeBeav show overshadowed remarks by DaveFromTumwater on the same broadcast. DFT is in the (growing) camp of fans who are ready for StHC^2 to take a seat and give one of the other QB’s a chance to show what they can do.
As DFT put it, Andersen preaches competition but only seems to actually apply it to 21 of 22 positions. I think the consensus here would be more like 17 of 22. But the point remains.
And, FWIW, Gina reports Fred Lauina was involved in a little dust up at practice today.
Bonjour
Just kidding, but I think Crowton is just hanging out until his next paid gig.
Highly unlikely as almost all of these guys have worked together before. Oh and I have a huuuuuge cock. See? I can make stupidly ridiculous false claims on the Internet as well
Maybe Baldwin drank all their soda. That’ll rub assistants the wrong way
Comment sounds like pure speculation
more like pure bullshit. as previously stated. Most of these guys have coached together before and all know one another. GA called it “getting the band back together” when he hired his assistants
Maybe one of them married Yoko Ono.
from the wayback machine. Still remember this game like it was yesterday. Game kicked off at 9:05pm and was the final college football game of the regular season and didn’t end until after midnight. My youngest had just been born 7 weeks premature a few weeks earlier and I was home with my oldest son while my now late wife was down in Eugene with our youngest. Best offensive line the beavs have had still to this day imo………….hordes of shit blowing across the field that evening and the refs of course served Hawaii some home cookin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R1SlZ18jHg
That game was a lot of fun. That was Riley’s best team. Loved Moore, Doggett (entire LB crew, really), etc. I liked that ’06 team even more than the 08-09 teams that played for the Rose Bowl.
I think you mentioned once your wife died of cancer? If so, first off, sorry, and secondly which type? One of my buddies found a lump on his back and gets it checked out tomorrow. He is freaking out pretty badly.
I agree. that was probably my favorite OSU team. Lots of playmakers all around. I think Matt Moore was probably my favorite qb of all time (sorry JS). Lost my wife to breast cancer in December 2011. She was only 38. Hope your friend’s dr appt goes well and it turns out to be nothing. I hate cancer and would kick it in the nuts if I could.
I was there in person, it was a blast. Luckily I was in a row with some local OSU supporters. The place was packed and they sold beer in the stadium. I couldn’t believe the litter around the edges of the field, blowing across the field….
Agree on Moore. His senior year, best OSU QB in “the modern era.” Take him over Smith, Mannion, Anderson.
Yeah, but you had to endure the worst year by an OSU QB the year before.
Canfield had a nice year but agreed Moore
off topic, wouldn’t you just love to wipe the smiles off the douches faces???
http://www.oregonlive.com/today/index.ssf/2015/10/smiling_mugshots_stir_outrage.html
That third guy doesn’t look as happy as the rest.
But yes, I would love to wipe the smiles off their faces. It’s amazing what a group of animals are capable of doing to one another.
Meh… it looks like the one guy not smiling is the one guy who knows how badly hurt the victim is. I’m guessing the other four were trotted down to the cop shop a while after some “fight” one of their pledges had with some other Greekster. They probably stopped smiling once they found out why one of them was charged with a felony.
“By my count, Mitchell went 5-of-13 (every play was a pass) but converted two key fourth downs to keep the drive moving and also got the Beavers going up-tempo on a couple different occasions.”
5 for 13 on the vaunted OSU defense? Hot dog!
If i remember correctly he threw quite a few interceptions in the off-season. Not to say he cant progress or hasn’t. There r positives with collins as well that to be fair i think we overlook. Obviously he can run but doesn’t get sacked and doesn’t turn over the ball much especially for a freshman. I expected a lot more turnovers from him to be honest. By not turning over ths ball allows u to stay in games as long as u have some kind of semblance of a defense. Im not against seeing other qbs getting meaningful reps but i think we start seth this game and go from there. His two worst games were against conference foes where we were outmatched on the road. Lets see where we r at half-time then go from there. If he isn’t performing then hell ya give another guy a shot. Im just afraid there really isnt a much better option. For what its worth i thought nick Mitchell was a great signing at the time. But he’ll have to show it on game day. I fear he is better at staying in the pocket to throw but tends to force the ball which isn’t really better. I think what everyone has said the straight up handoff is the way to go. I like haskins he runs with the ball ad if he is looking to take someone out. Not sure why he hasn’t got more reps. Blocking assignments ?
He doesn’t turn it over, but constant 3 and outs in your own territory will still lose the field position battle pretty quickly.
Not if the D can get a single stop on 3rd down (which they didn’t in the 1st half WSU). Problem is the D folks not the QB
deflection
Nobody has argued that the D is good. But whose fault is it that they dominated time of possession and had seven possessions?
Consider our scoring. We had a KR and a pick six for TDs. We had two “drives” of 24 and 27 yards for TDs. That’s 28 points out of how many? What did the O do for the rest of the day?
Oh… and how did the short fields and pick six come about? Did the QB run out there and make those plays?
*pick six is wrong game… my bad
So that falls squarely on Collins?
That he’s forced to chuck it every play cause we are down multiple TD’s.
And why are we down multiple TDs? A three and out and a turnover on (4) downs don’t exactly get the ball rolling.
I will say this. It was just a gut feeling, but when SC threw the ball more than once per series, we were punting or giving the ball away in some way. When we only ran (including his runs) and sprinkled in one (just one) pass, then we would score.
Far be it from me to say we need to run the damn ball. I know I’ve never ever suggested that before this year, last year or each of the years previous… multiple times per week… not me.
So I feel the play call argument. But SC is just a horrible passer. MM is better than he is. I have a feeling NM is better than he is. I think a lump of coal is better than he is.
But he can run.
Maybe the position he should switch to is not WR, but RB. I can see him faking a dive then lobbing a jump pass to the TE in the end zone.
And all of this is not to say that SC can’t or won’t get better. I actually think he’s better than Travis Wilson was years ago. If you watched Wilson as early as last year (and not against a Banker D) he sucked hard boiled eggs. He’s been getting incrementally better every year. But he was so so bad way back when.
There is no shame in benching bad when bad is bad. If there’s only worse than bad, so be it. But something has to be done to at least try to be better than bad. Goff was benched his frosh year. Wilson was benched multiple times in his career and almost quit football altogether (partially due to injury). He’s not an immediate star. I get that. He probably won’t be a star next year. Continued learning might get him there in year three or four. But I don’t think he’s good enough to beat out the redshirt we have right now or the incoming frosh we will have next year.
I have no clue what to think of NM, because we haven’t seen game time. MM is probably not good enough to beat anyone out, and he certainly won’t do it with zero reps. I don’t care what Baldwin says about mental reps. They’re not reps. You’re not going to get some feel good Bat 21 story out of this. These are jocks, not pilots.
Ya I agree, but the D also gave up a TD every possesion except once that half, with zero 3rd down stops. Our best offense is when we run as our primary and then throw when the D stacks the box, we have had great results doing this. We have Woods, Brown, Haskins, Nall, Collins and Bolden that can all run. We should be using them to take pressure off Collins. I think Collins will get better at reading the D and knowing when to hand it off or keep it. He had two bad games on the road, but IMO played very well vs Stanford for a young kid going against a team of that caliber.
Collins is a 2-star QB recruit. 2-stars…no QB offers except OSU and San Jose.
His HS stats — only a 47% completion rate in HS!

Jack I know what you mean about Wilson early on, but I thought he looked better than you’re giving credit. But if the point is some guys get better as they age, then yes, of course. My counter would be when the bar is so low (47% completion in HS, 2-star, etc), then how much upside is there, really? His HS stats and objective ratings have to mean something. Add to that we’ve see him play six games, and what we see closely matches his HS numbers and 2-star talent as a passer.
Anything is possible. But I like to go with probability over possibility.
He might do well this week because he does seem to play better at home, and I’m sure he’s feeling the heat. Plus, just like the Riley debate, there is an ebb and flow. As soon as I/we label the guy awful, he pulls out a miracle. I can see this happening for sure.
I stand by what I said since day 1 and feel it’s still accurate: he can’t pass, he can run, he has confidence (now I know this is only when things are going well, when they aren’t he folds). He needs to complete passes ~60% rate and move the chains, and this is his kryptonite. Until all of this changes on a weekly basis, I’m not going to fall for the uber athletic wow play here and there. The guy is also regressing instead of improving, so that’s another red flag — as D’s learn what he likes to do, he has not adjusted. Some of the latter is coaching.
Our best offense is when we run as our primary and then throw when the D stacks the box
I agree. An easy way to make Collins (or whoever plays) more efficient is to run with actual running backs. OSU is decent at it when they do it, so I’m not sure why they keep bailing on it and having the QB run around like a headless chicken. I think this week we see them run more, and I think that will lead to a game that looks like real football instead of street ball.
I could not care less about completion percentage. If he does nothing but throw the ball, I would accept 0% on first and second so long as third and fourth were ~90% and gained first downs. We would at least have a pattern of some intelligent design.
But what we see now is just not acceptable. And I realize part of that is play calls. But we need for our QB to at least look smart, if not be so.
I care a lot about completion %. It’s one common bond with all great (or even good) QBs and a mark of efficiency.
I also dislike batters with high strikeout rates…
In general, I just can’t stand inefficiency.
In general, yes. It’s an indicator of success. But it’s only an indicator when taken in whole. Aaoron Rodgers is a much better QB when his D is good with all the same numbers. So variance in those numbers makes no difference on the whole. If we play nothing but the pass and have the ~45% we’re talking about with all the first downs implied, we’re better than we are with someone who is constantly 3/3 for nine yards and a punt every time out.
So it’s all relative.
And let’s differentiate a little further. If there are players who think they are better or are better not giving effort in practice, then they shouldn’t play regardless. These gamers I speak of are giving effort but failing in practice. Those who are mopey and failing in practice deserve to sit without fail. And it would be wrong of any coach to call out the latter. So there’s some leeway there.
Three and outs are not much better than a turn over. It keeps the defense on the field longer thus negatively impacting there performance. I would argue that he is hurting our defense as well as our offense. I would rather see a couple turnovers per game if he could stretch the field and increase his yards per play. I would take a shot with Vanderveen at this point and give Collins some much needed humility. I think he would be a better passer than all of our other options and he is serviceable running as well.
I’d love to see Nick Mitchell get game time, if only to see how Collins reacts to the adversity. Does he slam his helmet down and refuse to talk to his teammates, or does he use it as motivation to work harder?
He didn’t freak out when MM got reps…
He did smile when MM threw a pick on a screen at his own goal line.
But at least we haven’t seen THAT play call again… and SC smiling afterward.
Maybe he was thinking of a funny comment from pettinebonehead
Sure did.
And then everyone got on MM for “moping” about the INT.
I still think if MM would have just been named the starter from the get go, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. As he would have established some rhthym and confidence. IMO all 3 of the QB’s are way to raw to be considered “elite” or even average D1 Qb’s. Collins best athlete, but the youngest and rawest of them. MM is the best all around, and NM I don’t really know what he does (I WILL eat crow if I’m wrong about him)
We would be having this conversation with different reasons if MM would have started and got the same results, and SC would have only a handful of plays in his “shared” reps. We would likely be screaming for SC to get a chance… for NM to get a chance… for anyone else to get a chance. But there is always the caveat that we know the coaches are on the ground every day and see and evaluate everything in practice. And that says the screaming might be just screaming in the end… most of the time.
And then there is the gift of the legend of gamers.
John Wooden always told a story about a kid he once had who was just a terrible practice player. He did well in pick-up games in the neighborhood. He was well liked (in a Rudy way) by his teammates. But he just sucked in practice. So he never played. But he talked man to man with his coach, and he said he could perform if just given the chance. So Wooden, against his better judgment, told the kid he would start the next game.
The way he tells the story, he says he came home and was upset enough about this decision that his wife noticed and asked him what was wrong. When he told her about it, she said, “John, you promised he could start the next game. You never promised he would stay in the game if he did poorly.”
The kid went on to become the star of the team.
Gamers are not as uncommon as we think. Coaches are not as infallible as we think. Most of the time everything is on the up and up. But not trying in the face of failing, on anyone’s part, is still not trying.
Are you suggesting NM is a gamer more so than SC or MM?
If the reason for this thread is true, then you already have an answer.
Good grief this Himphill HIGHLIGHT video is off the chain.
http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3735404/highlights/285949481
Hopefully he commits this weekend. No need to teach him how to tackle.
Yes! I feel like he’s a must have and he’s still under the radar
Man….. Any idea why our offer to him is to Grayshirt? Seems like a sure fire bet to translate to a legit pac 12 backer. Fast Physical plays with great instincts etc..
Just a numbers thing i take it?
Probably a numbers issue. Maybe if some more people leave the program, they can move him up on the schedule? I won’t be surprised if this opportunity presents itself…
My guess is GA is not planning on kicking anyone off the team so all he can guarantee is a greyshirt with the hope some of the guys not pulling their weight leave the program so it is no longer a greyshirt offer. Just a guess based on reading between the lines though.
I think what Ean says is probably right. GA recently told Eggers he plans to sign around 19 in this class. They don’t currently have that much space, so this must mean they can’t offer a 2016 scholarship spot past spot 11 or so, until the space opens up, hence the greyshirt offer.
As soon as space opens up through attrition, then they can be offered a 2016 scholarship
Kid looks good, they need to make sure he doesn’t get snatched up.
?
Sorry…. ?
Wtf man? you’re more stupid than a Duck honk… but luvin’ whatever?
Why lie?
I think this one wins.
Blazer… any idea if we’re holding a spot for Tolutau?
I have no idea if he’s in their plans, but would think it’s a good bet since he was planning to play for GA at Wisconsin, and his friend is Christian Folauo who we signed in 2015.
Another mission guy to keep an eye on is Amone Finau(3* Athlete on Rivals). He was a Utah commit 2 years ago but is on his mission now. Beavs just offered his little brother Sione, who will likely commit this year, but he is leaving on his mission. I think there’s a good chance Amone comes here because of these events. Coach Tuiaki has a connection with their family too.

I dunno, its obvious from the first play on the film he’s not a gamer….
heh heh…
The coaching staff could show this film to the current defense….”This is how to make a tackle,” or “this kid’s coming to take your job”….
settle down now
brohas know the game. just lax.
Holy crap. He looks like a video game. Seek and destroy type player.
Some of you have posted (including angry) that you can’t find episodes of the Drive on-demand. Episode 4 is the current one, and maybe this will hope.
NOTE: You REQUIRE a TV account login to be able to view these (ie Comcast, Dish, etc.)

I meant help* ;-)
We’re the Cal of this season to Utah’s Arizona State :(
Good things must be coming then!
I hope so, but Cal’s been sputtering. Probably finish with 6 or 7 wins
?
streaks end….OSU had won 6 straight at UA….OSU had won 4(?) straight at WSU….Andersen has beaten CU’s coach 4 straight times…This isn’t baseball with it’s tradition of honoring streaks and superstition, but are the odds going to catch up to Andersen this weekend? Let’s hope not.
I’ll be at the game, I haven’t seen a us lose in 4 games. We are winning…. haha
Then please be in your seat by the opening kickoff….
No guarantees, we are taking one of those party buses
I fucking hate that. How fucking hard is it to be in your goddamn seat before kick off. Every fucking week I’m constantly having to move out of the way of people trying to get into my row, 5-8 minutes into the first quarter. Don’t give me that “driving from out of town caught in traffic” horse shit. I drive from 2 hours away and have never missed kickoff.
If you’re going to sit in the parking lot and drink and BBQ give/sell your fucking ticket to someone who will show up.
And fuck you I’m standing. If you want to sit and watch the game stay home, or don’t complain.
Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!
You got a fucking problem buddy!?!?!
I don’t think you want to go there.
Good rant.
I agree.
Sit your ass down, I can’t see.
What are the odds Isaac Seumalo returns for another year? For those that have seen lots of games this year, does he seem like his old self? If not, I expect his draft stock would benefit from coming back another year and having a full year of his solid play. It would be a nice boost for the program if he returned:
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/278066-153209-seumalo-returns-to-duty-for-beavers
I don’t think he’s looked good this year. I’ve seen him get beat on several plays, and flat out miss guys when going to the 2nd level.
I would agree with this. I think he is a shadow of who he will be. But he has been a tool, not a weapon.
He will come back, he is not having a year that warrants leaving early and I think his stock has dropped considerably.
He dream was to play in the Rodent Bowl. He’s back baby.
I forgot about that, he is most certainly coming back!
Wow, these GIS/VIDs of Bolden are embarrassingly bad…OSU marketing yet needs help:
https://twitter.com/osubeaversfb
Ya those are bad comparing to what they were putting out earlier this season
Defensive end seems to be a position of high priority for this staff. 2 DEs visiting this weekend, plus another from Florida is hopefully visiting soon. Then there’s Joah Robinette. And today they offered a JUCO guy, Austin Vaimili. 3* with offers from Fresno St, SDSU, Texas St, Utah, St.
Looks like he might only have 1 year of eligibility though?
http://247sports.com/Player/Austin-Vaimili-83330
http://www.hudl.com/athlete/784620/austin-vaimili
*correction- 3 to play 2
I am glad DE is a priority position. You essentially can’t have too many and this roster doesn’t have a single pac 12 caliber DE on it. One of the reasons our defense is getting killed. Our attack at LOS looks like shit. We lose three yards just from losing in the trenches. Our LBs aren’t great but they don’t have a fighting chance when guards peel off to the second level. If we had average DEs this defense improves from unwatchable to at least marginally competitive. Gotta get as many in as fast as possible and they have to play immediately.
Beavblazer: have you noticed nebraska going after any of our recruits after we have offered? What I mean is, are they actively trying to pick off guys we are going after? I haven’t been paying much attention is the only reason I’m asking.
Not sure if theyre specifically targeting guys because theyre guys we are after, but in a few instances they have gone after the same guys. As soon as Christian Wallace committed, they started recruiting him. Markell Simmons was offered by Nebraska today and we’ve been after him since January or something like that. Also, there was Jordan Stevenson, the wisconsin rb who got denied. Our coaches went after him hard and Nebraska did too. They also got him.
Other than that i haven’t paid too close of attention to Husker recruiting.
Could see how they could potentially negative recruit against Corvallis and guys might listen to them though, which is why I think we should keep an eye on the Wallace relationship.
The negative recruiting part was what I was thinking. I would think it would be hard to tell if it was true though, only because it’s not like we’re after the same 15-20 players actively, where it could make a difference. I would think it’s more likely the negative recruiting is coming from within the pac12 schools.
Nebraska is trending down, GA should use that against ol Biley
Sounds like Nkeal Harry injured either his ankle or knee pretty badly tonight. Couldnt put weight on it and was helped off the field. Hope this doesn’t lead to him missing the trip tomorrow.
Luck o the Beavs…..
Or if he does show up he’ll say OSU are all racists.
Luck o’ the Beavs
Did I miss domething? Or are you being snarky.
Just a reference to the 28 year losing streak.
Oh…ok I thought I might have missed something scandalous! Care on.
* carry….sausage fingers!
It’s a high ankle sprain, so he should be able to make it…right?

What the hell is going on there? Looks like Police State BS.
The guy was involved in a high speed chase with police, and ended up ditching the car before getting surrounded. He also apparently had three guns on him or something.
Okay then, I guess that is justified.
But was he black?
Think he was white. Footage of the arrest below:

…anyone have any idea how to embed on this? I just pasted the embed stuff from Youtube, and it doesn’t seem like it’s working.
Was CPD spokesman Lt. Cord Wood on site?
Serve and protecting the shit out of him!
StHC latest temper tantrum?
Poo.
That was absolutely not the post responded to. Will this post also be erased?
Poo does say poo.
This is revolting.

Yes… holy shit.
Umm… many ideas will flow. None are definitive. Take this one rule to heart. I suck.
Slurpy slurpy!!!!!!!!!
Wow!
slurpy slurpy sucks.
I am no longer funny.
Wait… I also wasn’t funny.
Jack are you having a stroke?
Having or taking?
Or did you leave a computer logged in at the library ?
That would be convenient.
Loooooooooooooong story.
You all know Jason is going to kill you all.
Just wow.
But not me.
*fingers crossed*
Who the fuck is jason…like “Halloween” jason?
You’re somewhat close about the library. WiFi with drunk ass holes can be fun sometimes.
What’s going on with Jack?
https://youtu.be/bKLo-jzizdg
he’s off his fucking rocker again? Around here we usually just call that Tuesday
Pullin’ a “Tuesday” on a Friday
he’s 3 days late. Or 3 days early. Depends on how one looks at it
Quick update: I know you are all worried about Jack, he was having a nervous break down earlier. I just want to let you all know that I am fine.
Ugh.
It’s Friday night bitches! and it’s homecoming weekend!!!!!! Buuuuuuuurp. Yeaaaaaaah! Pills and Booze motherfuckers!!!!! Right Jack?!?!?!? Fuckin Fight On!!!!!! Buuuuuuurp
Never pills… never.
The night is young and there’s no Denny’s in Corvallis. Parker and I are fucking famished. How late is Shari’s open??? And by Shari’s I mean the restaurant. I’ll make sure coed Shari isn’t famished later! Fuckin Fight On!
Fucking all night bro! SHARI’S!!!!
I have a great story involving Corvallis, Halloween, shrooms, cops, a corpse (a real one) and Denny’s with many people in semi-drag.
Simply an awesome night of madness.
here’s something interesting that was emailed to me tonight in a link…………….
“There are also revelations that players are getting left behind on trips for disciplinary reasons, whispers or tweeted whispers of fights and suspensions and trips to the desert with 66 players. Against Arizona we took three defensive tackles to Tucson.”
I think we’re going to see some addition by subtraction after the season. Totally fine with me that GA and staff will not put up with bullshit and aren’t afraid to suspend a player for a piss poor attitude or boorish behavior. I really like Whittingham’s slogan at Utah. All in or in the way. Some of these student athletes need to step aside and either be full time students or find another act at a different university. Wondering out loud here, is SC’s attitude or behavior the reason for Nick Mitchell’s appearance with the 1’s in practice at times this week. Is there some underlying message the general public doesn’t know about being kept in house????
The thing I worry about in hopes for addition by subtraction, is that we have a very young team. Thus, it might take a bit of time(years) to get GA guys in the door via open spots schedule.
agreed. But I’m willing to be patient. Gotta Give GA and staff this year and next at least
Agree with whiskey here. Attitude in lieu of effort means you leave. Figuratively, you’ve already left. So what’s the difference?
SC’s tude, on-field and rumored, should be disturbing to any coach, even a poor one. So maybe someone might be trying to light a fire. Maybe there’s something more.
Game Day! Go Beavs!!! I got my chainsaw oiled and gassed for this one!! Brats and beers at my tailgate! O…..S…..U! I smell victory tonight!
Use your chainsaw on Spuce.
That just opens the door for highlight reel, one-handed catches.
Go time! You little bitches best bring it where you’re going to get chopped down in your own crappy house!
what position are you playing tonight? Left out?
I see Moran and Lucas but no Harry. Looks like the injury might have ended his trip before it started. Luck o the Beavs is a cruel mother fer.
https://twitter.com/BeavRecruiting/status/657926653062963203
On the bright side, he’ll still get to see OSU play. It’ll just be…at Oregon. Maybe he takes an unofficial visit to Corvallis while he’s down at Eugene.
N’keal Harry is a 5* correct? I wonder if the injury will drop his stock, making him a more reachable target?
Haven’t heard the severity. Some think the Lucas injury earlier in the year made a few teams like UCLA look elsewhere, which could help us.
Was a high ankle sprain for Harry. Any ankle doctor’s in the house who would care to speculate on recovery time?
I’m reading 6+ weeks at least to return to the field.
I hope he’s ok, but it would be nice if it scared away a few teams. Can an injury make a player lose stars?
No offense but this is fucked up.
You want the kid because his visit goes well, loves the coaches, teammates and Corvallis so he’ll be happy for 4 years. Not because his options are limited because of injury.
Don’t start sounding like a duck.
I’m not trying to sound like a duck. I’m trying to say the kid is a 5*, with an injury that might make some programs pass on him because they can pretty much get anyone they want. We don’t have that luxury, so if a team sours on him, and osu keeps recruiting him like they have been, that could bode well for us. 4* star guys are awesome but picking up one 5* would be mind blowing for this school. And the ducks would be the guys souring on him just because he got injured.
Yep. It’s not like he rooted for the guy to get hurt. The guys already hurt he’s just hoping bigger schools cool off a bit leaving the door open for the Beavs.
Saying we need to start kicking kids off the team or pulling scholarships because players don’t fit the offensive or defensive schemes of the new coaching staff. Now that’s fucked up IMO.
Coaches don’t kick them off the team (except for a few, maybe). They just tell them they’re going to ride the bench, so if you want to play, consider a transfer. This is more noticeable in hoops, due to lower numbers.
no one in their right mind is going to take a flyer on a kid with talent because of a high ankle sprain
Turned down tickets to the game of the weak. Too late, too cold etc. The real reason is I can’t stand one more game of watching Collins run around like a hyperactive kid that just binged on a bag of Halloween candy. That and the matador “ole” like tackling.
Will be sitting my ever expanding arse in the trusty ole recliner for the next thirteen hours. First up Bikey v Northwestern. My fitbit might be thinking I’m dead. JB
Lol. Nebraska’s qb throws worse then Collins
No, he’s so much better.
Wtf?
https://twitter.com/NCAA_Nation/status/657970186490880000
Looked into this a bit just before this, I’m reading its Oklahoma state. Tragic none the less. People are getting crazier and crazier by the day it seems
Drunk driver, so messed up. That shit needs to stop. Enough already.
Ban cars!
Come on, gubermint.
Would people accept guns being regulated like cars? Insurance, license, testing, use in limited areas, close monitoring by cops, signs, laws, safety features, registration, etc….
They shouldn’t, since that is unconstitutional. But they mostly are regulated like that already.
You pro-gubermints are never going to convince me censorship, stealing citizen’s rights, etc are good things. I started AB after Angie got authoritarian on my ass and banned me for speaking the truth. That was in 2007, so this isn’t anything new, and I will fight to the death for freedom! Live free or die! Die in a fiery ball of AIDS, authoritarians! I can’t wait for a real Civil War so I can take care of you fuckers.
You can’t really label me pro-government, I’m just pointing out what’s happening (high regulation of driving) that runs counter to the pro-gun folks that any small bit of gun control will snowball into full gun confiscation. I find that people who like to think of themselves a pro small government come running when they need something the private sector isn’t providing, or if they feel there’s an imbalance that effects them negatively. You see it all the time. Small government types want a high level of police authority, regulation that benefits them, laws that fit their values, budget cuts that only effect others. See the red counties, they want their timber $ and no retail weed stores, food stamps, etc. Wait for the next hurricane. The hillbilly states will all be clamoring for FEMA cash.
And how’s that high regulation of automobiles working against impaired driving? You can’t buy a car off the black market and drive it down the street. Well, you could but eventually it may catch up to you. And I already passed a background check and my firearms are registered. Have a license to carry. More regulation isn’t going to curb mass shootings. It’s not a gun problem. It’s a human behavior problem. And people “like me” as you call them don’t enjoy living in the blue areas due to over regulation. I don’t tell other people how to live or what they can or cannot do. I’d like the same in return
I’m not telling anyone about how they should live, but we do have rules about what we can and can’t do. It’s pretty clear that greater gun control leads to fewer deaths. Just acknowledging that doesn’t mean more gun control will happen. And the high regulation of driving does lead to fewer deaths, and like guns, if the driving laws that are in place already were actually enforced, there would be significantly fewer deaths. The people I was referring to re:smaller government, are the ones when you get them talking, it’s not smaller government they want, but an individualized government that fits their needs and values.
“I’m not telling anyone about how they should live, but we do have rules about what we can and can’t do.”
Exactly. And I follow those rules. I don’t need to be told what is or isn’t legal and someone hold my hand. So to penalize me or others because some do, well, welcome to a fucked up society we’ve helped create where one can be not held accountable for their actions. Like I said, it’s a human behavior problem, not a gun or car or anything else problem. Want to solve it? Start working on that issue instead of creating more worthless laws that are just that. How is more regulation of guns going to keep them out of the hands of criminals? It isn’t. The douchebag that shot up UCC had acquired them legally. So how would more laws on firearms prevented it? It wouldn’t. Go ask or research how a gang banger or criminal acquires firearms. You might be surprised. Or not. It’s not rocket surgery here. This is why I don’t understand how people think putting more band aids on a problem will solve anything.
“It’s pretty clear that greater gun control leads to fewer deaths”
There’s another myth. Where’d you pull that false tidbit from? How’s that working out in Chicago and DC?
It works out pretty well in every western country, but it won’t happen here, so don’t worry about it.
Oh, most criminals get guns when a second person buys the gun for them, or they have an ethically challenged individual gun dealer sell it to them. I have info on the subject, despite your preconceived notions.
please link the non biased statistics where it works in “other western countries”
I also stated you might be surprised, or not. No preconceived notions here. You have the right to not own guns. That is your choice and I fully respect that. But to put more band aids on an issue that has to do with human behavior and continue to ostracize people like me who have done EVERYTHING legally and by the book because a select few choose not to is not a solution to the problem
It’s all the western countries that are equally violent in nature, but have a lower homicide rate than the U.S. I’m not ostracizing you, or suggesting band-aids for anything. It is an issue of human behavior, I agree, and when there’s easy access to more violent weapons, more violence happens.
Would you accept having to take government classes and be registered and have limited use on your freedom of speech?
They probably would. Should know better, Give up liberty for security, lose both- deserve neither!
Spot on, Numbers.
He probably thinks the Patriot Act is a good thing.
Looks like it should have said oklahoma state
Colorado 30, Oregon State 24 Baldwin not able to sustain enough drives. Hope I am wrong as feel OSU should win this by 4 but don’t like how they seem to only play OK for limited periods at a time. It’s a 60 minute game. Roll Beavs.
Baldwin is playing QB? Shit, I heard it was Crowton.
Not sure if anyone is watching the Nebraska game but northwestern’s qb is running all over bankers D hahaha. Obviously not a surprise, 8 carries 121 yards. 4th quarter just started so plenty of time for more.
Yes, but the same quarterback is 7 for 19 for 56 yards. That makes Collins passing numbers look good.
Some clear booing by the crowd at different times, too.
Tale of the Tape:
National Rankings vs Opponent Averages:

It looks like Riley ate his oatmeal this morning…
So close but yet so far!
Riley that is.
It’s so quiet in Lincoln you can hear the “fire Mike Riley” chants on tv.
What, no camera on Mikey smiling and chewing his gum as time expires?
Did you hear the guy yell “are you kidding me?”
#poorbastards
I did. So funny
as long as they dong pull a Michigan they got this.
Dong pull?
lol, Freudian slip.
Don’t*
Sounds fun!
so what game in the Riley catalogue of failure at OSU is the closest analogue to today’s loss vs. Northwestern? I’m thinking specifically of a late stupid penalty that effectively removes any chance of victory, or dominating a game statistically but not pulling it out. All I can think of is that loss to a Walt Harris-led Stanford team in 05 or 06, or maybe the Utah game in 08.
Let’s consider…
Nebraska was going to commit to the run, yet had 300 passing and 80 yards running, including the qb
Nebraska dominated time of possession but their bend but don’t break offense still couldn’t capitalize
Qb racked up meaningless stats
Inopportune penalties
Pretty much could be any classic riles game… It’s his boilerplate game plan.
Riley will beat Michigan State and lose to Purdue as he limps to a 7-6 season. It’d be the most Riley thing.
They should put these games on ABC so there can be an Another Biley Choke sign
Another Banker Collapse
A Bullshit Coach
I have a 1984 Chevrolet Station Wagon. Cracked block, rusted out, bald tires and the transmission is shot, also a 40 year old couch, pretty sure the stains aren’t bio-hazards, but no guarantee and two VCR’s. Free to anyone from Nebraska that will come and get them. JB
Free??? They should pay you to take that junk off your hands! Mine going rate for used worthless crap is pretty darn high in NE.

It is scary how much that sounds exactly like us from the past decade.
From one thread there:
“Mike Riley looks like a man who is exhausted and has no answers for improvement. He seems to be in agreement with some of the questions from the media where they’re questioning his methods/decisions. He just looks lost and it truly is sad yet he continues to throw the players under the bus. I don’t understand that at all. As a leader, you point the thumb, not the finger. I’m seriously done with him.”
