  1. And I don’t buy this “injured stretching” thing.

I think it is more likely this happened:

    1. The story that he threw his juice and whined about talking to the media was true.
    2. GA got word of it.
    3. The end [of StHC]

If the guy could play, you put up with some of this stuff, but since he can’t, you don’t.

    • I agree. Team might play their best game this week. Or not. I really don’t know what to expect, but if he was a cancer, you can definitely see the team rallying around Mitchell and playing an “A game” for once.

      • Collins had atleast one dimension to his game that was a weapon. He was a plus runner. Mitchell can’t run, and isn’t a great thrower either.

          • I don’t love him. I hope Garretson wins the job next year. But what does Mitchell bring that he doesn’t? The numbers don’t say he’s a better thrower. And you can’t argue that Collins is the best dual threat QB we have. Sure, pound the rock with Nall, I loved seeing that. But Michell doesn’t give us a better shot at winning than Collins

          • Mitchell does give us a better chance at winning. He’s inclined to at least share the ball with people who are runners and he’s likelier to connect on short passes.

          • 9 of 24 isn’t all that likely to complete many passes. Yes there were drops, but when they drop Collins pass, people say he throws a bad ball.

  2. This certainly will get the Lame Kitten poster’s panties in a wad.

Personally, if he’s being a locker room cancer, see ya. If he is truly injured, well, we will have to wait and see. I don’t lean toward the injury excuse being thrown out. I see someone moping and this being the coaching staff’s attempt at tough love for an attitude adjustment.

  3. Collins run game was nice at times. Needs considerable improvement in other areas. Have nothing against him. Few players on the team are “winning” right now. I hope he grows up more and continues to compete. His speed alone can be worth having on the field so a dual QB situation for stretches has some potential. Mostly his game management needs significant improvement.

Nick seems to have a minor advantage here but calling it much more than that isn’t based off stats. We’ll see what Mitchell can do with a full game as signal caller tomorrow. Hopefully we see NM show the leadership to get the team to play with more consistency on offense. Have to be able to sustain drives and score TDs in this league.

    • with Mitchell you really do lose the read option capability as the opponent will probably key in on the RB’s. I honestly do hope Nick does well tomorrow. I just don’t think there’s a QB on the roster capable of doing much this year. If they can just show some improvement the rest of the way mebbe they can throw an upset at somebody in one of the last five games. What we won’t see is the QB running the ball 23 times per game

      • Hopefully as he gets more and more first team reps timing will get better with the receivers and he’ll be able to hurt defenses with the slants more consistently. We got some good receivers and and think NM gives us the best chance to distribute the ball to those playmakers.

  4. So it looks like there are still two Seth Collins fans.

Whiskey, I’m not sure why you said they can’t use the read option. Mitchell can run a little, I think. He doesn’t seem slow or fast, somewhere in between. I guess we’ll find out if he can do it.

    • exactly. We shall find out. I’ll be glad to admit I’m wrong if Mitchell can and does run effectively on the read option. Just not 23 fucking times

      • I don’t know if he will run effectively. Depends what you mean by that, but I think he can fake a handoff and run five yards. So maybe like 40 yards in a game. Which is fine if the RBs are getting carries and he’s hitting WRs so they can run.

I’m excited to see if he can do anything. Pretty tough D he will face, but I think Utah is a bit overrated, honestly.

        • that’s what I meant by effectively. I’m not expecting Mitchell to rip off 20+ yard runs or take one to the house. But if he gain positive yardage and help move the sticks, I’d take that. I’m just not expecting much tomorrow. Young team, lots of injuries, Utah is going to be pissed after losing last week. Do I think like you that Utah is overrated? Maybe a little. I didn’t think they were the #3 team in the country. But I certainly think they are top 15 or 20 and probably the best team in the Pac-12 south. I think a Utah/Stanford Pac-12 title game would be fun to watch

          • I liked how Dalton ran for TCU; much like you said, moving the chains, converting third downs (crucial, can demoralize defense), moving the sticks…that plus passing efficiency.

At least he ran effectively against Banker’s D at that game in Dallas, but then, hey, who didn’t?

        • Did you not see Mitchell against Colorado, he thought he had the corner, tucked it, and got SLAMMED for a loss. He cannot run. Hope I’m wrong. But haven’t seen any run ability yet. As Angey knows, when it comes to QB’s, I’m not often wrong. Hopefully for the Beavs sake I am today.

    • Little bros? If that doesn’t scream “I’m a faggot duck”, nothing does. Just keep polishing that giant yellow butthole on your back window of your 87′ honda civic, it might get dirty in this rain. But I guess you can get a discount on another one from walmart.

    • Not much big sister, how was getting fingered for the first time at homecoming last night? Still sore? Oh well, you can go walk it off at the mall shopping with daddy’s erp.. I mean uncle’s credit card

  5. It’s a weird development. Most true freshmen QB’s would be estatic to get playing time at the D-1 level. There was a photo of Collins walking off the field after the CU loss, odd facial expression, I thought it looked more like he was sorry for himself than the Beav loss.

  6. I know how we all feel about Ken Goe, but man I’m amazed at how this guy will not give up his lovefest with Mike Riley and unfortunately he has a bully pulpit to keep doing it. He does this “cutesy” top ten college football column. He devotes THREE of his thoughts to MR this week!

-The Beaver offense is struggling and, of course it’s Mike Riley’s fault

-The guy hasn’t been OSU’s coach in 11 months

-Riley never could develop a quarterback-well, besides the four he put in the NFL.

Were they tandem bicycle partners or something? I mean Riley is 3-5 at Nebraska, I don’t think we need to say anymore. I don’t know why Goe feels the need to keep talking?

  7. I still think StTK has a great athletic skill set. But in order for us to effectively use him, both StTK and coaches need to accept that his ideal role is as a multipurpose back. Ie, slot receiver, Rb, qb.
I think if he is properly utilized, he makes a defense cautious about personnel on the field, I would love to see us able to take advantage of mismatches, using Collins speed to get him into places where he could be more effective, and also be able to serve as a dual qb package.

There are a lot of really great ways to get a good athlete on the field. It seems like getting Seth to accept his weekly changling and continuously evolving role will be the biggest hurdle.

  8. FROM WILL’S DAD:

He asked me to keep it quiet until game day so here you go:

“Look for some big surprises on offense today. I mailed Coach Andersen some creative ways to use his new left tackle. Those include but are not limited to; tackle eligible as a receiver, lining up tackle as a full back, lining up tackle as an H back and lining up tackle in Wildcat and letting him pass. I included diagrams.

If you think I’m kidding just read the reply from Coach Andersen”

“Dear Mr. Doe Thank you for your generous $5.00 donation to the football program. I have forwarded the funds to the BASF. They have allowed us to keep the $3.00 in small change in the football office for use in the vending machines. Coach Baldwin is particularly grateful.

We love hearing from our most prominent donors and will endeavor to incorporate your suggestions into our upcoming games.

    Go Beavs… GA”

  9. I keep thinking that if in fact SC is a team cancer, the team might feel relieved that he didn’t come to Utah and in turn they might feel less stressed/play loose because they don’t have that black cloud hanging over them.

    • It will be completely obvious if they play a whole game. Can’t base it on a drive or half cause they’ve already done that. One thing I’ve noticed is the receivers have been completely disengaged on routes cause the feeling is the ball probably won’t be in any kind of catchable area that won’t get them killed. Some of the drops last week could be attributed to that. Minus bolden of course, he has to be averaging 2 to 3 a game. Give Lucas half his targets and rushes to TRULY see what he can do. I think that with the comments about the youth movement Andersen gave this week I believe Lucas should see more touches.

  10. I like SC, but I still think MM should have started this year, with SC red shirting. Would have given him a year to mature and see how it’s done at the college level. Not many of us here are mature now, let alone when we were 18…

  11. Not in 1 million years in my saying that is what’s going to happen, but how much was USC favored by when we beat them as number one at home?

  12. Wow, Nebraska’s best offensive player blew out his knee (year ending, maybe career ending) celebrating a TD, according to the Nebraska forums. Maybe they are overreacting b/c they are upset with Biley and Ranker.

      • Good question. I doubt it, but maybe. My initial prediction was 2 years, max. So we’re right in that area. I think they let him start year 2, and if he stinks it up by mid-season next year then they fire him. He might not last a full 2 years.

        • It’s safe to say the athletic director, and everyone else that had anything to do with hiring him are currently freaking out thinking what in the hell did we do?

          • Their AD sounds like a real db. The folks (alumni and the media) at the U said he was like a ghost – they never saw or heard from him in the year he was at Miami. Good riddance was the unveraal message. After he fired Bo’s he sent an email to them stating the fact. The tweets were hilarious from the team. “Dude didn’t even tell us in person.” Bo called him a vulva like name and met with the entire team at an off campus hotel to speak his mind post dismissal.

Tha Husker fans are saying that both the AD and the President should be shown the door. With Opie joining them it could be The Three Amigos Part II.

        • You can’t fire Mike Riley mid-season, then one of his assistants ends up as head coach. I reckon they wait til the end of next season to cut ties.

          • I don’t think they’ll approve paying three ex-coaches at the same time for the next 4-5 years. If they do it would have to be some sort of weird new record. $10M plus annually not counting the new coach. Ouch!

    • “Riley is going to lose to 1-6 Purdue”

According to what Husker fans were saying up until this week, its because they have poor talent. What’s the excuse when you lose to Illinois and Purdue?

  13. Nebraska have become the Beavers. They must love that.

    Landohusker said… (original post)

We got 4 yards. WTH can’t we line up and run the ball again?

    God damn I hate langsdork
    ——-
Totally agree. Run the ball again!

  14. Playing against a D like Utah’s the odds of the opponent’s QB getting knocked out of the game are pretty good which raises the question: Who is OSU’s 3rd string QB today?

And for that matter: Who are the 1 – 4 RB’s for OSU today?

    Anyone know?

    • I’d guess Vanderveen is 3rd string.

Not sure about the RBs other than Nall likely starting. Woods is probably good for a couple runs. I forget if Haskins is healthy. Brown is out…it’s hard to keep track of all the injuries.

      • Vanderveen listed as questionable for today’s game. I was at the Colorado game and saw him in street clothes on the sideline, it was never announced that he was injured. But I saw in the midweek injury report he is listed as questionable.

  15. Seemed like he tweaked something against Colorado, though I forgot what it was. He got up limping at one point though and didn’t really play much after that as far as I remember.

Could be that he aggravated that injury.

Of course, the more intriguing option (especially to those who don’t like him as a person or player) is that he’s disgruntled and wants to transfer.

Please note I’m not a SC supporter, I don’t think any of the QB options we have this year are good. I wasn’t impressed by Garretson from what I saw in the off season but his play at USU was good. Maybe he’ll be decent next year. I just don’t expect much from someone who was “just ok” at USU’s level.

If SC ends up transferring because he can’t handle the competition then whoever wanted him now has a big blemish on their QB record though. I realize they were in a bind but recruiting an extreme project player with maturity issues is unforgivable.

    • I also remember the tweak vs CU and grant that your thesis is entirely possible. However, I’d expect a player in StHC’s position to fight to make the trip, if just to support his teammates. That’s what a starting QB does, IMHO. Of course, I’d also expect a more positive showing in the recent interviews and pics.

      • Nebraska’s starting QB didn’t make the trip (I know because I’m watching that game right now) and there are no issues with his character or situation. I think it’s pretty common for injured players to not travel to road games.

        • C’mon, you’re talking about a guy who is part of Mike Riley’s organization(?). And, MR has a full 70 guys to travel leaving no room for Armstrong; not like GA who has 3 or 4 vacant seats available.

Seriously, missing the trip is only part of the reason many wonder if we are getting the whole story on StHC; his interviews and public pics don’t exactly scream “selfless, team focused leader”. Making the trip would be a good indicator, but to me, just pushing hard to go would be nice. If StHC begged GA to let him make the trip I’d expect GA to mention that by now. Neither of us knows, just going off as much of the picture as I’ve seen.

It’s hard to put any stock in rumors of a transfer; hopefully GA manages Seth well, I’d like to see him use his talents for the Beavs for a long time…..not so much as a QB though.

  16. *ahem* prediction looking good so far

    scotty says:
    OCTOBER 24, 2015 AT 1:10 PM
    Rating: 0 (from 0 votes)
Riley will beat Michigan State and lose to Purdue as he limps to a 7-6 season. It’d be the most Riley thing.

  17. Commentator on Huskers: “There were a lot of people asking if Mike Riley was the best they could do, with respect to Mike Riley.”

Sorry, Mike Riley is the best Lincoln can ever do now. Media narratives translating over to Nebby I see

  18. 42-16 boilermakers almost end of the 3rd. There goes the “but the losses were so close!” argument

Of course, Riley defenders will use the 2nd string QB excuse, conveniently ignoring that has virtually squat to do in this game with Banker’s D getting owned.

  19. Purdue QB having a career day. where have we seen that before?. WR wide open in the end zone. Most points Purdue has scored all year. where have we seen that before? This game for Nebraska is going down like the OSU loss to UW in 2013. Team just mailed it in. Purdue announcer: “the rout is on’. Those poor bastards can’t say they weren’t warned.

  20. Did I hear that right? The announcers just said Nebraska has only had two losing seasons since 1962? They’re about to be 3-6 and playing Michigan state next weekend. This after firing a coach who had seven consecutive 9+ win seasons.

    • They fired Solich who averaged double digit wins in his tenure, but maybe they knew he was a drunk back then? Osborne, Devane and that magic ain’t ever coming back, but Husket Nation finds that inconceivable for some reason. Welcome to mediocrity, Husker Nation.

  21. Done Deal. Riley will lose to 1-6 Purdue and fall to 3-6. Suck that Goe. Ranker has taken massive buffalo sized dumps all over the Midwest already. What a shit fest for NU.

  22. I’m so glad the rest of the nation get to see how bad Cav, Read, and Banker are and big of panty loafers they are. Goodly knelt year Nebraska.

  23. It’ll be interesting to see if Nebraska makes Riley make changes to his staff or just fires him.

It’s so painfully obviously the Read is a waste of money on special teams and that Banker is atrocious as defensive coordinator. OC doesn’t matter that much because it’s still Riley’s offense. Does he call plays at Nebraska or is it Langsdorf?

  24. Purdue needs to get points on this drive, even a FG would be ok. If they go 3 and out, I would not be shocked to see NU come back and win unfortunately.

  25. When Mike Riley is the face of your brand, you have a very poopy brand. He quickly proves he is the butt of your brand.

    Thank you Nebraska!

  26. Nebraska fans are getting it faster than Beaver fans. I give them credit. It took our fanbase forever to realize this stuff.

Riley looks so upset he might just say dag nabbit

  27. Seem like what will protect Riley is the AD needs him to succeed to keep his job. It doesn’t seem like Riley will get fired unless it’s both of them fired by a higher power. They both deserve it but these institutions tend to be conservative with decisions like that.

  28. Brandon Sprague @BrandonSprague

It’s unfortunate some media told OSU fans “Riley was as good as you can do, deal with it.” Cause I imagine some taking joy in Neb right now

    Yes. Yes we are

  29. I was waiting for the Purdue game to be officially over before chiming in. I quietly thought there was a good chance Purdue would win this after seeing Nebraska early in the season, but I didn’t really say it out loud in order to avoid fellow Boiler friends thinking I’m delusional. Thankfully, their 2nd string QB sucks donkey, so that helped. This had all the elements of a Riley face plant: special team botches, knucklehead penalties, a QB running on the D, and several shots of a dumbfounded Riley with his mouth agape. I’m expecting full meltdown mode with Husker fans who weren’t there already.

Let’s go Beavs, make my Saturday 2-0!

  30. 140 years of school history and Riley is responsible for the most losses entering November ever at NU. That record may stand if Nebraska gets to 1000 years played. Just good ole Riley football and his superb cast of buddies coaching these boys up. Eichorst deserves to be gone in next couple of weeks. Some of this cast will never coach again. Hope Riley has enough spare bedrooms for Banker, Read and Cav in his San Antonio compound.

  31. First half of the scotty exacta complete: Biley loses to a 1-6 Purdue team. Now he just has to pull the once-a-year upset, this time over Michigan State. Fanbase will be further divided, and Biley limps along to yet another ~.500 record. But he’s such a gosh darn nice guy it’s all good!

  32. Maybe there will be some noise about how Riley’s offense “is putting up points” and Banker needs to go….something to try and reduce the impact of the poor choice the AD made….

      • Things Riley would do before cutting Banker:

        * give up gum cold-turkey
        * upgrade from gollies to f-bombs
        * try giving a coherent press conference
        * actually put in the effort needed to create a great program

  33. Riley got grilled hard by the Nebraska media after that game. Guys on 1620 called him “a lost man.” With a straight face Riley talks about the need for “more balance.” got called out on that too, as in: “well who’s calling the plays?”

    • Listening on TuneIn app. Radio guy says they’ll be good in 3-4 years. LOL!

First of all, when did Nebraska, with all its resources and 9+ win seasons for years, become a rebuilfing project?! Oh wait duh, it was when they hired Mike Riley.

Second of all, no way is Riley lasting 4 years. Then again, I’m not sure he said it would be good with Riley leading it in year 4. Maybe he meant the next coach.

  34. caller criticizes “stupid fans and stupid AD” who wanted to get rid of the last coach and took on one who just lost to a 1-6 team.

  35. as bad as Purdue is I didn’t give them much of a chance until I read last night that TA jr did not make the trip and the back up would be starting. One would think with a QB making his first career start it would be best to rely heavily on the running game. As we all know, MR and Langs have a love triangle going on with the forward pass. That was a disaster waiting to happen. And true to form they continue to try and fit a square peg in a round hole. Nebby throws it 48 times and runs only 22. Granted they were getting their asses handed to them at the end of the 3rd quarter and had to throw the ball. Fyfe throws 4 picks, that vaunted Banker D allows Purdue QB to run and throw all over the yard. Different day, same result

    #TPB

    • I just dont see the interest right now. Howard will want a qb who can throw. Why would he come here?
Juarez has his choice of any school.
Now if GA can string together some semblance of good football these last few games, maybe things change, but I just dont see it happening.

Marycs Strong is on the visit list next week. Guys like him seem more like the types who will fill out this class.

  36. Caller from Husker call-in show:

“All you need to do is look at the guy on the sideline…They panned on on him, and there was not a soul around him. He had his hands in his windbreaker and looked lost….This man CANNOT lead a team!”

Those poor bastards catch on quick

  37. More callers:

“I saw this man standing there on the sideline with 3 minutes left in the game with his headset under his armpit and mouth gaping wide open…. Your headset under your armpit isn’t gonna do it”

“Every game is exactly the same offensively and defensively, they don’t change no matter the opponent”

LOLOLOL I literally have tears in my eyes!

  38. They are obsessed with Tom Osborne and think that era is possible still. The one thing NE fans don’t seem to understand is the game has changed due to TV, Schollie limits, and many other factors, and that era isn’t coming back.

    • Meh, they are stuck in the 90’s. I understand their frustration. But they think they deserve national championship shots every year. 1999 was their last conference championship, there are not relevant anymore. And they make calls to fire Riley then wax poetic about hiring John Gruden or Saben or Chip Kelly, like all they have to do is ask. Really? At one time Nebraska was a dynasty, not anymore, Riley just hammered the final nail in the coffin on that. Maybe in several years they might come back but not in the near future.

    • Some gems:

“There is plenty of talent on this team they are being coached poorly. Does Riley even coach? Just see him walking up and down sideline chewing gum.”

“At some point, with three or so minutes left , Riley takes off the head set and stops coaching. Players like Westerkamp deserve better than that, don’t they?”

“Well, it’s taken 55 years, but we’re as bad as when I was a freshman and sophomore, and Bill Jennings was coach. How did our defense get so bad in a year? Not that it was great last year, but even with all the turnovers, the “D” looked lost.”

“am I the only one noticing Mike never looks at the field, just sideways at nothing.”

      Perceptive poor bastards

  39. Another caller:

“This is rock bottom..this is probably the worst team most people listening have seen Nebraska ever lose to.
We are probably not going to see a home conference win. Today wasn’t about talent or depth, we got hit in the mouth by one of the worst teams in the conference, one of the worse teams in the country… I think what you’re seeing among the fanbase is a feeling of hopelessness that there’s nothing you can do and you see this program swirling around the toilet”

Maybe not an exact quote but it’s hard to type fast on a tablet

Sounds like Riley’s final year at OSU! #TPB

  40. While I’m enjoying the NU beat down I’m afraid we have our own beat down starting in a couple of hours.

Never the less………. THANK YOU NEBRASKA, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. What’s the obsession with Riley? He’s not a bad man, he’s not some arrogant prick like Kelly or creep like Sark. He’s not a cheater like Carroll or a cock like Mora. Yeah, I’m setting myself up here with all my comparisons, but what’s deal!? At the end of the day, Riley is a better man based on being a football spectator than all these dudes and the majority of college football. I’m rooting for Mike and Nebraska to do well. Let’s concentrate on the problem we call the Beavs! I think our team is better than our record shows. Personally I think Baldwins offense sucks!

Just my .2 cents! Make your comments I don’t care! He’s gone let the past go! Shit at least he did better then the handful of coaches before him. Sorry Pettinone!! although your daughter was hot in high school!

    • Are you familiar with Brenda Tracy? Riley is a fraud, creep, arrogant, etc. He led this program to shambles and happily left it that way. At this point I just hate Riley and want him to fail.

      • I’m familiar, you have proof he knew what was going on? But if that’s your family or friend you have the right to hate and I can’t deny that.

Not sure he led it shambles… I would say they had some good teams and good players. I disagree with arrogant man.

      • And essentially shiting on everthing OSU. How it’s hard to recruit, his nebraska team is the best he’s ever had ( how about his 10 win season or the teams he failed to get to the rose bowl ). Most coaches are humble when speaking about former teams or making comparisons about players. Not Riley. He’d throw his old players under a bus if it made him look good.

    • Agree that Baldwin’s offense has its issues. My main problem with Riley is he inked a 10 years deal at OSU after 2008 ( which was just a Sun Bowl with 1 field goal) and that was not enough. One article he mentioned “right at the end of the talks I thought of the 6 win extension idea. That was my idea. We’ll try to make this thing as good as we can get it.” That turned into the potential of a 17 year life sentence for a field goal most girls trying out for backup place kicker at Florida could make.

    • re: Riley obsession: it’s simple, really. The OSU fan base was fed the narrative that not only was he a good coach, no coach nearly as good as he could be hired in Corvallis. This was the “be careful what you wish for” trope. It has to be documented, and is on a weekly basis, that he isn’t a good coach, and what better proof can there be with him, Banker, Langsdorf, and Cav bringing in a losing record with an aggregation of player talent that Riley himself said last summer was better than anything he ever had in Corvallis.

    • Riley is the absolute center point and figurehead for all that we’ve been saying plagued OSU football:

The media love affair with Aw Shucks Riley, defending his faults and mediocrity by putting down OSU and Corvallis to lower the bar.

The lack of killer instinct, participation trophy mentality that kept the program from reaching its potential.

The blind loyalty to his assistants over his duty to his employer to develop a great program.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Riley succeeding at Nebraska only encourages the false narratives that you can’t win at Oregon State and someone like Riley is the best we can do. It hurts OSU for Riley to succeed at Nebraska, period.

    • 1620 the zone (KZOT are the actual call letters) has two local call in shows from 10 to noon, Pacific time and then another that runs from noon to 4 Pacific time. It’s been great fun listening all year long

    • Thanks for this Scotty. Husker fans don’t beat around the bush. They’re right and almost the exact same things that were being said on AB for the past however many years. Simple Jack is a fraud.

BTW, the Fire Mike Riley Facebook page is alive and well in Huskerland. It’s fun to read.
