  1. I like how all the telecasters are uber bearish on the Beavs. Usually that’s a sign the opposite will happen. Same with stock markets.

Not saying the Beavs will win, but the odds these guys are all right are low.

    • That was funny and he didn’t make the trip. Something tells me Collins isn’t hurt! I’m with Angry on this one. GA, didn’t elaborate.

  2. The only angle I think is interesting:

We poached a bunch of coaches from Utah. Any chance inside schematic knowledge gives us an edge? Think Sark beating USC with a far inferior Washington team after they hired him away from the OC job there.

    • Why even blitz? We always run in high and out of control and get made to look silly. Do the coaches not drill proper blitzing mechanics ( stay low and run through the qb) or do we just not execute EVERY single time

    • Giving Utah a shorter field is more stupid. Would you trust this offense to pick up two yards? They couldn’t convert on 4th and less than a yard last week and a worse opponent

      • They’re going to score anyway. And they were picking up yardage just fine until 1. Direct snap to Bolden, and 2. Throw to Nall.

  3. So stupid that team keeps running it out of the endzone. Have to make 3 guys miss just to get to the 12 or 13 yardline. SO FRICKING STUPID!! GA needs to stop this. Run it when outside the endzone only!!!

  4. Our defense continues the trend of looking atrocious. I mean, Sitake literally was on their sideline for years, you think he’d have a little better gameplan.

  5. Yep, this is going to be another blowout.

They really shouldn’t have raised ticket prices at Reser, because this team currently isn’t worth it.

  6. I’m so done with Bolden as well. He can’t follow his blockers on that 2nd and 1 and go up field, and he insists on taking the ball out of the endzone on kickoffs which always leads to a short field. He got lucky there and got us one or two more yards than we would have had on a touchback.

  7. Mitchell looks like a more complete QB. Not as much of an athlete as Collins. But we don’t need that. Leave that up to our RB/WR while making the correct zone read.

  8. It’s looking like the play calling is reverting back to the mean. In other words …………………

Baldwin is fucking up yet again.

  9. running the wildcat and abandoning the scheme that got you down the field is the kind of counter-intuitive thing the old crew would have done. go with the momentum.

  10. NIck Mitchell is making me eat my words and turning me into a believer. Right now, he looks like he should be the starter moving forward

    • I though the 2nd wildcat with Storm was pushing it. Wasted play. I’d rather they lineup and run Nall there. Storm goes down too easy so if he gets yardage the first time don’t push it.

  11. The offense flows better with Mitchell. I don’t care what any stats or 40 times say. Playbook is more open with better flow and execution. With Collins it was one step forward, two back, and every play was street ball/busted where he ran around and nothing happened. This looks more like an offense no matter what happens the rest of the way. Mitchell can run enough to be effective. Not sure on his passing yet…looks hit and miss so far but overall a lot better than Collins’ passing.

    • I think it makes sense to develop Mitchell’s passing; it definitely has more potential than Collins. If Collins attitude is that bad, I hope he’s gone, otherwise he should be some hybrid/athlete and not our QB.

  12. So NM drives them down the field then they go wildcat twice? Seems like the passing threat is needed in those 1st and goal plays to keep the defense from crowding the line

  13. Looked like the CB got a bit handsy on that play, but not sure if the WR ran to the wrong spot, or Mitchell just didn’t hit the spot. Still our best drive in a while.

  14. pretty good drive. Utes helped out the cause with a few penalties. Didn’t like the 2nd consecutive wildcat call. Especially inside the 10. Defense able to get some rest after being on the field most of the game so far.

    • I need to see him with 5 or 6 games and a viable QB to answer that. The play calling has mostly been okay, but the execution awful. When they execute the offense looks good. All his past offenses were explosive. So yeah, I still am bullish on him I guess. Definitely some questionable calls, tho

  15. Stuffed!!!

Look at the bigs up front. Didn’t think our defensive line would be our best defensive unit at the start of the season, but…everyone else is setting a low bar.

    • Exactly right, your qb doesn’t have to hurdle or run every down to be effective running. NM has a good feel for what to do and when

    • #16 Lucas kid runs Full Speed straight ahead he can run thru any crack and with a good block its to the house baby!!! Just sayn Speed Kills

    • agreed and they did. I think that was the plan all along and just trying to kill clock. Take the 3, try and hold for the last 1:20 or so on D and go into the half down 14-6. Beavs get the ball to start the 2nd half.

      • Trying to kill clock AND hoping to draw Utes offside; might have worked if snapper would have bobbed his head with a change in cadence.

  16. low scoring first half like 2013 there and already a better performance than 2011 when Whittingham’s staff laughed Riley’s crew out of town

    • It is hard to count the ways in which GA’s coaching is markedly better than what we saw from MR.
One example: the use of TO’s.

  17. I’m okay with kicking the field goal, but I wish Andersen didn’t use the timeout there. Might need it in case we get the ball back before the half.

  18. If we hold them here, you have to be happy with the first half, right? We’ve looked better than them this quarter and aren’t out of it.

  19. How about this for some creativity:

Inside the 10 yard line, use Collins at QB, Nall at RB. Use Mitchell everywhere else. Might work nicely since passing inside the 10 becomes much more difficult and Collins can just run it in.

    That’s what I would do.

  20. 55 yards passing but 9-12 completions. And that throw to Jarmon could have been a TD(Imagine if that was Illamin back there).

Mitchell at QB for the next 4 years. How do you think Collins is reacting back in his dorm?

  21. According to ESPN Mitchell is leading with the number of rushes 7. I have to question Baldwin calling NM’s number that many times, especially when OSU only has 2 QBs at the game.

Can’t help but wonder if DB is even taking that into consideration. Drinking 18 cokes a day could/would do that to you.

  22. I’m tired of those screens to the outside that take forever to develop. They catch it 2 to 3 yards behind the line and nothing ever comes from that. We have to have NM throw quick west coast style routes. I also don’t understand the designed qb draws that the Utah dline just eats up all day…and play Nall cuz stormie looks lost.

      • Baldwin had a shitacular season his first year as OC at CSU, but was great other than that at CSU and at USU. I say give him next year and if he’s still garbage we need to make a change (maybe just promoting McGiven).

You need to give them time to get players that fit their spread system. Pro Style to Spread is a huge change.

Still, there’s a big difference in being a coordinator at the Pac-12 level compared to the Mountain West. Baldwin and McGiven might be out matched, but I’m giving them more time to prove it.

  23. Can’t blame Sitake or the defense for the past two games (well, so far in this game). The offense needs to be able to score touchdowns.

    • yup. The one time they complete one down the field it’s called back on a penalty. The Bolden fly sweep on 2nd and 15 that picks up 12 is a first down without the penalty on the previous play.

  24. A 3rd down pass play that is short of the sticks. Who does that sound like?

We’re giving away too many good opportunities here. Utah could have one good drive and put this away.

  25. Offense is feeling a little stagnant in the second half… lots of easy/repeat plays. Hopefully they come up with something new to get us some yardage.

    • I still like Ricky, how long has he played d1 lb? He did need to breakdown though. I still can’t believe Wilson makes as many plays as he does, that’s the most awkward looking dude running the ball.

  26. Someone on Blitz reporting that Collins and Andersen got into a “disagreement” which lead to him leaving practice, not playing today. The source said, however, that Collins IS hurt, but that wasn’t the complete reason why he isn’t with the team today.

Another commenter saying that they have inside knowledge regarding Collins and it’s not good, but doesn’t feel comfortable sharing because it’s nothing anyone needs to know the specifics of, but it could come out eventually. He just doesn’t want to be the one to spill it.

  27. No special teams catastrophes in the last 2-3 games, right? Maybe we sorted that out. Notice Bolden and Guyton as the return men.

  28. That game has turned ugly for the offense. D has played well.

Nall with 0 carries. Awful. Despite NM playing poised and managing the game, the bottom line is he is throwing for 4.4 yards per completion and put up 0 points. They constantly seem one [made] play away from doing things, but they don’t make the play, then drives fail.

  29. That’s probably the end of the game right there.

Can’t decide if this or the Colorado game is the most frustrating game of the season so far.

    • Colorado because we had 2 game winning drives and choked both.

This game, we played hard and showed a lot of progress. Just not good enough to beat a top20 team yet.

  30. I don’t understand what happened to Bolden. He was always mediocre, but never this awful.

He redeems himself, but man, so many drops from him

    • I think so too b/c the pac 12 is pretty horrible this year. utah is very overrated. ucla stinks. cal stinks.
any of them can put up 50 on a given day, but overall they’re all mediocre and bad by historical standards

      • Actually I feel like the conference is regressing to the mean. USC being good, plus one or two others being pretty good. The others mediocre to bad.

      • UCLA’s defense isn’t nearly as good as Utah, and they also have a freshman quarterback under center (although he’s better than any of ours). Add that to being at home, and I think I’ll be storming the field Saturday.

          • I believe Scott and Decoud will be back next week, not sayin’ they can’t be torched but less likely than the kids out there tonight. Hopefully DB reconsiders and uses Nall vs UCLA.

  31. You’d much rather underthrow the 6’5″ and give him a chance to come back to it. Those last two drives were a great sign though.

  32. Mitchell is a backup, too. Probably could be a pretty good one. Didn’t do anything tonight to lose the job the rest of this year, but he’s a backup at this level.

No clue what MM is yet, but Collins and Mitchell are backups.

      • Absolutely disagree. Is he Andrew Luck? No. But he’s a redshirt freshman playing his 2nd game.

Everyone is so quick to judge nowadays. YOU AREN’T SUPPOSED TO EVEN PLAY THIS EARLY! And he’s out here competing against a great defense. He missed some throws. So what? He has 4 years to grow.

People need to chill out. The team has shown a lot of growth in the last few games.

          • Don’t understand your willingness to give Cokey a pass, and actually defend him and his lack of use of Nall, but ready to proclaim NM is a never will be capable, after 1.5 games.

          • I don’t understand it either, but that’s what I see, and I’d be surprised if Baldwin’s offense doesn’t put up big numbers next year, and I’d be surprised if Mitchell becomes a viable starter. I do think Mitchell would make a very nice backup. I also think GA needs to recruit a big time QB talent, and he isn’t, so I don’t get that…

        • Nice effort by NM but let’s be real. He and StCH aren’t the answers for the next 3-4 years. He’s maybe a Katz lite. And Ryan could at least sling it.

  33. Considering many here thought Beavs would be crushed I’d say the loss sucks but they actually looked competent and competitive at times

  34. I’m encouraged by the effort on the road against the #13 ranked team. I had them losing 44-10. They didn’t quit and kept fighting. Take away those first two drives and overall the defense played fairly solid and they were only outscored 13-12. I AM questioning why Ryan Nall did not get a single carry but I am not as down on Baldwin as some are. The two plays I question most were the 2nd wildcat run by Woods from the 5 yard line and the Bolden wildcat on the 2 pt conversion. I really don’t like the wildcat offense period. Unless the guy taking the snap has the ability to throw it, I don’t like those calls against an aggressive front 7 like Utah. The good, zero turnovers. Slowly I think this team is starting to grow up and I do believe they will get someone before the season is over. Colorado played FUCLA close today. I don’t see them as world beaters. UW either. Their offense is just as anemic. I think those are they best two chances. Mitchell needs to be the starter moving forward

      • NM got happy feet – which is understandable due to a lack of experience BUT the pocket was there for most of the night. That pass to Villy down the middle he just needed to settle down but he throws behind. No one within 10 yards of Jordan and a lot of field in front of him…

  35. I was only able to watch the some of the 4th (at my son’s football game). I haven’t had time to look at this entire thread. I was checking stats on my phone. Was Nall injured early on?

        • For those who don’t have radio:
Jim Wilson thinks Baldwin called a good game given the injuries. Says Nall wasn’t used because running into the middle is going against the strength of a very strong D.

It is unusual for me to differ from Big Jim, but I still think a few carries would have been worthwhile. May not have gone for more than 2 to 4 yds, but would give Ute’s D something to consider.

          • There is no law saying Nall can’t hit off tackle a couple of times.. He’s a load to tackle no matter how “acclaimed” the opponents defense is. You can’t go from rushing for 120 yards one week to getting ZERO carries by design the next week. That’s idiotic and although I’m sure Nall is a team guy, he is probably thinking WTF.

  36. If NM is the starter going forward then the play calling needs to be catered towards him. No more designed qb runs. The only time NM should be running is off the read option. I also can’t stand the screens on the outside that take long to develop, we need to get rid of those asap. I also think that Bolden should only be involved on returns and maybe a few runs off sweeps to the outside. No reason for NM to throw to him if he’s gonna keep up with his drops.

I really like the effort overall though. Our defense played great besides a few whiffs. Also, when was the last time our special team coverage in particular has looked so good? I think if it wasn’t for the shifty playcalling which was mostly the third down calls we could have put ourselves in a better position to win. I’m still not sold on Baldwin…

  37. Bolden had an OK game but messed up a couple times. Needed his production. Problem was never running Nall. Especially in the 4th with Utah tired there were times it could have been effective thrown in to help keep the chains moving. Best fight from the team this year but more so on the defensive side of the ball where tackling and effort were much improved. Felt like they were playing for all 60 minutes like you have to do every game.

  38. Once again, positional reviews for the game:

QB B-: 19-35 200 yards 1 TD no INTs. Had a few blown throws late(fades, one slant, one deep throw into loose double coverage) but also stuck several nice ones and ran the ball very well. Showed good quickness. Really hope they fix his long throwing motion in the offseason.

RB D-: Storm had 9 carries for 21 yards. Utah’s defense is great, but that’s still really bad. And several times he just ran into linemen and dropped like old Storm. Lots of people asked why Nall got no carries. It’s odd to give him none, but we clearly weren’t interested in running vs Utah’s front 7, either.

WRs C: Villamin made some nice plays, including that 70 yarder toward the end. Guyton Was much better. Bolden was decent running and godawful receiving. Jarmon was targeted I think once, and dropped that 30+ yarder right off his hands. Disappointing day overall.

OLine C: Protected Mitchell reasonably well, but opened no running lanes(as expected). Illegal lineman downfield killed a great pass though.

DLine B: The entire defense stunk for the first quarter. After that, the line got pressure and tackled Booker pretty well. Peko once again stood out. He isn’t getting sacks, but he is being disruptive.

LBs D: Willis had a few nice plays, and Mageo almost decapitated a WR, but overall they were invisible yet again.

Secondary D+: The corners were Fs; they blew coverages all night and missed lots of tackles. Strong had a good game, looking like he did last year.

Special Teams C: Good kicks, made 2 FGs, and no blown catches. Didn’t make any plays in the return game, but didn’t give any up, either.

Coaching C+: A few sketchy offensive play calls aside(Stupid WildBeaver) Baldwin’s playcalling was much better, and I think the strategy of avoiding running straight at Utah’s defense was correct. It also gave Mitchell lots of meaningful reps. Defensively, Sitake called some good pressures, but I think his playcalling is hindered right now by the complete lack of talent at CB, so he has to play more conservatively than he wants.

This was, overall, the best-coached and best-played game by the Beavers this year(our wins vs scrub teams don’t count). The offense scored some points vs a great defense, and the defense clamped down on a great RB and highly-ranked team. Lots of development the last few weeks, so we seem to be turning things around. I wouldn’t expect more than 1-2 more wins this season, but we all new it was a throwaway year anyway; play the young guys, let them develop, get a talented class or two in, and then we’ll be competitive.

    • Horowitz gave the LB’s a B; your evaluation matches mine. Only reason I can think of is that Horowitz is saying a “B” for guys with their lack of experience, still not sure I buy it.

  39. Wow. Minnesota goes for the win on the final play from the 1/2 yard line and the qb sneak fails. Mich wins 29-26. Tough loss beavergopher

  40. That was the type of game even in defeat all of us were clamouring for. Team played hard and competed. A couple of big plays go our way and we are right there.. Well done mostly across the board

  41. Gina quotes Andersen regarding StHC: “It wasn’t best for him to be able to make the trip and, quite frankly, stand on the sidelines.”

Postgame, Andersen pretty satisfied with NM’s poise and management of the O. Specifically mentioned NM moving guys around when they weren’t correctly lined up.
