Men's Basketball Holds off Colorado

The Beavers defeated Colorado (5-2) at Gill Friday night, making key free throws down the stretch. A key note is that Cunningham and Burton both started for the second consecutive game in back to back wins. Both played well (13 points for Cunningham and 8 for Burton). The game was televised, but I had a Christmas party and didn’t see it. It’s being replayed today at 1pm.

This was an important win to get to .500, but also it takes some sting out of the Civil War loss.

The Beavers should have better basketball and baseball teams than the Ducks this year, so maybe that’s where they earn redemption.

The next game will be Sunday at 2pm vs CS Bakersfield with radio coverage only.

  1. I saw the replay last night at 11. They played a decent game, and Cunningham and Burton are a little loosey-goosey right now. Burton has a low post mentality and great hands, but he also has a wicked bounce pass from up top. Cunningham has a great first step, good passing skills, some great vertical game… but he plays too much like a frosh at the moment. He’ll be good, maybe great, in the years to come.

Haynes finally got going, and STarver looked confident while hitting some key outside shots. Schaftenaar never played the high post. He was setting up back to the basket most of the game and struggling at it. Late in the game, he looked like he was finally figuring it out, but the best part of his low post play is that he was constantly getting to the line as a result. If he gets even a decent hook shot going, he can be good.

Not much else to see. Brandt was having a rough time with the size and speed of the game, but you could see some skill from him. The role players were a little rough, and they gave up too many o-rebounds for conference play. And we could have used a couple free throws in the first half. There’s a reason they call them ‘free’ people.

    • Pretty much spot on, Jack.

      Just watched the replay.

I’ll add that Schaftenaar looks off…he might be relegated to being a roll player this year. Tarver was driving the ball nicely. Cunningham, too.

  2. That definitely helped take some of the sting out of the CW, and they have another game tomorrow, I think, should be fun to watch.
