I’m pretty stoked. The VCU coach talked about clamping down on the 3 point line, so the Beavs need a good game from Eubanks/the bigs.
Go Beavs!

I’m pretty stoked. The VCU coach talked about clamping down on the 3 point line, so the Beavs need a good game from Eubanks/the bigs.
Go Beavs!
Go Angry Mammoths!!
Does VCU have the athletes to clamp down on the 3 point line?
I hope the Beavs don’t come out flat due to the start time/time change. And I hope they slept more than I did….
Go Mammoth Beavers!
Nice showing by the PAC yesterday……….
Orange Express rides again!
VCU is very athletic, especially at guard.
This is a program that is not that far removed from the Final Four.
Doug Gottlieb on the radio yesterday compared VCU to Michael Keaton’s character in multiplicity, where a guy keeps cloning himself, but with every copy of a copy, the new version loses a little bit of its abilities. So the 4th or 5th generation can be seen shaving it’s own tongue, or doing other abnormal things. Basically, he thinks VCU is getting by more on reputation than ability, and theyre far from the Rams team of 5 years ago.
Go Beavs….
VCU is going to play aggressive, disruptive defense, and is going to crash the offensive boards. OSU needs to stay focused, make good decisions, take care of the basketball, and box out. We are going to miss Tres Tinkle a lot in this game, and his absence makes this a much tougher match-up for OSU.
We probably won’t get much help from the seniors, apart from GP II. Olaf is a potential disaster against an opponent such as VCU (given Olaf’s inability or unwillingness to box out and to stay in front of his man on defense). Olaf should sit unless he is hitting his 3-pointers. Jarmal Reid and LMW tend to lose focus, make bad decisions, and turn the ball over too much. They need to be watched closely (and need to sit if they can’t keep up). But we probably need at least one of these three seniors to step up and make a real contribution today.
To win this game, OSU is of course going to need a big-time performance — on offense and defense — from GP II. But OSU will also probably need to get double-digit scoring from Stephen Thompson and Derrick Bruce and Drew Eubanks (who also needs to stay out of early foul trouble….)
That’s a lot to ask for.
Whatever. GP II will be the best player on the court today, and Beavs are going to win.
Go Beavs!
Shouldn’t be too hard for VCU to crash the boards if Olaf and Reid box out for them like they did vs Cal last week. Seriously, some of the laziest rebounding I’ve ever seen.
Olaf is afraid of contact. Did he break a bunch of bones as a child? Drink some milk, dick, and man up.
The wooden shoes always cracked. Made him gun shy.
Olaf is just slow. In that Cal game he boxed out his man and the ball fell a few feet away from him, but he just stared at it and a Cal player ran and got it. He needs to be quick and go for the ball, but the reality is he can’t, so we need him to take care of his man and the others need to scoop up the ball.
Olaf is going to step up!
Even the NCAA website now has a “boss button” to help you hide your screen quickly if you’re watching the game at work.
Seems like a good message from an educational institution.
GoBeavs
Considering all the f bombs I dropped while watching my bracket explode, that website and ESPN’s bracket challenge should be marked NSFW.
Rip your employer off, lie to your boss… Yep sounds like NCAA levels of integrity
Touched down at 7:45 a.m here at LAX dead tired, and can’t wait to see my Beavers beat VCU with the rest of the OSU students here with me.
Go Beavs!
I haven’t been following, what’s going on in LA? Spring break?
I’m going on a mission trip to Peru this spring break (although I’ve graduated), but I have a nice six hour layover to watch the Beavers play.
Good timing. Safe travels and hope the trip goes well. Go beavs
Props to Coach Rueck!

He should win this with the job he’s done over the past 4 years.
Oh right, we have the Lady Beavs at 2pm. Nice.
I’m beyond excited for today. Not tryna be all politically correct but you should throw in that the women are playing at 2 PM as well in their tournament. It’s a special day for OSU athletics/basketball honestly.
As far as VCU goes, I think they respect us a lot, and I definitely respect them. I think this game can go either way. They play teams close, and grind out wins like we do but they’re a bit more efficient on the defensive end of the floor. They made it to the A-10 championship game and had a good year in the regular season. They didn’t do too well against most of their major conference opponents. It really comes down to controlling the boards to some degree and making sure we don’t get in deep scoring droughts. If we do that, I think we can win.
@beavergopher I saw that, it’s dope to think that we have one of the best 4 coaches in college ball this year. What makes it even better is the fact that he’s pretty much here to stay; I think this is Rueck’s dream job.
Not to be lost in all this is the Baseball opens important weekend series tonight against ASU.
Not tryna be all politically correct, but it’s BWBs, not “the women”
Perhaps he doesn’t have any Mommy issues.
There’s some match ups we can exploit against VCU, for sure. Eubanks has to stay out of foul trouble. If he had a more complete offensive game, he could be a monster in the paint, just on size match up alone. We’re going to miss Tinkle in this one. Duvivier or LMW need to step up and have a good game. Beaver by 4!
Meanwhile at the NCAA championships in Madison:
http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30800&ATCLID=210802488
Hope get some big wins today. A top 10 finish as a team would be awesome.
Just got to my seat. Duvivier looks locked in. Could be sleeper of the game
I read his starting spot was given to Bruce today? Locked into the bench maybe
The starting lineup would say otherwise
Go Beavs!!
This VCU coach in the pregame talk is impressive. “Leave no doubt who the toughest team is”…I think these other conferences have keyed in that the pac-12 is weak and vulnerable.
Beavs better be ready and give A+ effort.
Well, my theory that an observant viewer can tell who is going to win in the first 5 minutes goes under Ran’s scrutiny again: I’m going with VCU. Way more mentally tough, intense, aggressive, and all those other ESPN platitudes. So far I’m 100% with my ESPN platitudes, so it’s an interesting sub-story.
Back to the game: get Bruce in there. The team looks lethargic.
And as soon as Bruce comes in they go on a run to tie it…
There we go..Bruce gives good energy
Fyi, the live stream on the NCAA website is awesome. No hesitation and crystal clear. Pac12 network and Comcast could learn a thing or two from the NCAA
Defense has been a little better over the 8-2 run. If we can stay solid on D, they(VCU) should start to wear down… But I’m going with VCU is probably going to take this by 6.
Bruce! So fucking quick!great dish to Eubanks
He should be starting. He can fill in the lost Tinkle production.
Next year
Derrick Bruce is both willing and able to attack the middle of the defense, and then either dish off or finish. Against a super aggressive defense that leaves holes, that’s what OSU needs.
CBS ncaa tourney app is great.
Defense has been bad. VCU is having way too easy a time with those entry passes down by the basket. Eubanks and GR seem like they’re a step behind.
This offense with Duvivier and Olaf is so uncoordinated and slow.
Watching try to execute a dribble handoff is like watching a toddler try to figure out algebra
9-0 run, not good…
A long 2-pointer off the dribble is the worst shot in basketball. Figures that it’s the Beavs favorite shot. Basketball IW is too low to win this game. VCU picks up its 6th foul of the half and instead of attacking the basket to try to get free shots, we start pulling up for 18 footers. So so so dumb
offensive rebounds, please.
Why is Bruce on the bench?
Get Olaf out. Put Bruce in.
I’m not getting an audio feed on the OSU webpage. Anyone else having that problem?
Jesus Christ. I feel like Duvivier only exists to make my head hurt
Is Duvivier the worst shooter on this team? If I were e VCU I’d leave him open and encourage him to shoot all he wants
Those wide open looks that clank off the rim are painful. I think Duvivier is a sub-40% shooter, but the worst? Maybe.
The NCAA feed just stopped working for me and they want me to sign in with a cable package. Anyone else have this?
I believe you get three hours of watching online before you have to sign in.
Go to cbssports it’s free all tourney
That’s the same link…it goes to the ncaa site.
I guess my 3hrs are over, even though I haven’t watched anything today.
If you use incognito mode in Google Chrome it will bypass that restriction.
Not yet. Figures though
Finishing the half with a whimper….
ESPN level platitudes.
I hate commercials showing an NBA player complaining about his haters or doubters, i.e: Damien Lillard or Kevin Durant.
I also hate the University of Phoenix commercial with the singing woman with the hipster voice complaining about only if she had a brain. They played that one repeatedly during the First Four games, but I haven’t seen it since. Maybe people complained.
That commercial was horrible. But I’m already against for-profit education. So I thought I was the only one.
No flow on O. VCU getting to the hoop at will. Not good.
ESPN platitudes. We need STATs to back it up argh argh.
Really missing Tinkle today. Just can’t score or create any easy offense. Not good. VCU is streaky though so if they get lucky on some of those contested long 2s off the dribble they love to shoot, maybe the claw back into it
VCU coach: “we forced them into taking some long 2’s, which is what we want to do”
Beavers not getting to the hoop. They’re too tentative with entry passes. It’s like they’re waiting until the clock is at 14 in the hopes VCU will stop clogging the passing lanes on their own. Beavs should be more aggressive with their size advantage but they aren’t doing it.
That’s why at 5 minutes I said VCU will win. They were driving and taking it to the Beavs, and the Beavs were sitting around on O waiting for something to happen. Sure sign of a loss.
Now, they can change their mindset in the locker room, but I don’t think they will. This has been a problem for the Beavs all year.
My thoughts exactly. I almost said “it’s been a problem all year”. Nice alley-oop dunk, angry.
Let Bruce play more !
Sure, we have more size, but VCU is way more athletic up front. Olaf is too slow for this type of game. Same for Jarmal Reid. And VCU will probably pick up the pace even more in the second half. If we are going to win, Olaf and Jarmal are not the answer. It’s going to have to come from the freshmen and GP II.
To win, they’ll have to play a full half of their best lineup: Eubanks, Payton, Bruce, Thompson, Duvivier. It’s small but their best lineup. It’s not like they’re scoring inside or getting rebounds with their “big” lineup anyway, so just go with that.
Hey, he’s playing this exact lineup. Nice.
They should be attacking when they break the press. They did it once and got a dunk.
Was Kenny Smith used as the model for Homer Simpson? Their face is identical.
VCU’s “havoc” defense leaves lots of holes. OSU needs players who are willing and able to attack those holes while avoiding turnovers. Let GP II, Derrick Bruce, and Stephen Thompson handle the ball, encourage them to attack the rim, and have Eubanks hang around the hoop for dish-offs and rebounds. That would give us a chance…
This commercial with Adam Scott drives me nuts. The idea of dropping us into the story in medias res is that you eventually explain how we got to where we are.
It’s frustrating to watch an offense that insists on pulling its bigs away from the paint to create jump shots. Unless you’re full of great shooters, you’re giving away the rebound battle and you have to play great D to have any hope of winning.
Stevie 0 points.
A handful of WTH shots with nothing to show for it.
Please little 8lb. 7oz. Baby Jesus, will please let the Beavers play their best basketball in the second half.
Need to keep them under 75, they are on pace for 76
Nice call kman.
Sorry Olaf turned his ankle, but very glad to see Olaf out and Bruce in. Big net gain in aggressiveness (since Olaf is about as soft and passive as a guy his size can be….)
Am I a bad person for thinking the Olaf injury is a good thing?
I mean, its not like he was seriously injured. Just enough to force a substitution
Can Thompson hit a fucking shot within 6 feet of the rim? We’d be up 5 if he could.
All the Beaver’s weaknesses coming on display in this game. VCU doing a nice job exploiting.
Tinkle severely out coached. As soon as I watched that VCU coach during the week I went from being confident the Beavs would win to being pretty confident they wouldn’t. The guy had an assassin’s mentality. Tinkle was acting all Riley, saying it was a “neat deal” and wondering if he was preparing his past teams right, etc.
Also fuck Duvivier. He can hit 3s sometimes. That’s it. I’m physically pained when he has the ball in his hands and is asked to create. Like there, where he travelled.
Hey, at least we broke the streak and have the women’s game at 2pm.
The only way I see the Beavs coming back in this one is if Thompson goes off like he’s been known to do. Need to exchange 3s for 2s because they can’t stop VCU for some reason (it just requires getting into position and trying, but they can’t do it).
With the Beavers playing small, Drew Eubanks has to be ready to help on plays in the paint but he has been nonexistent in help defense all game. Oregon State’s frontcourt will stop them from
Making a serious run in the tournament. They’re a dumpster fire on both ends
Eubanks is low IQ. I said this before and people got all over me, but he’s a mess mentally. Sure, he has moments, but in general he’s a mess.
He needs a lot of coaching and some therapy this off season.
Beaver front court needs serious bolstering if they are ever going to be a strong D-1 team. You’re seeing it here now. Tinkle would have helped a lot in this game, but so it goes.
It wasn’t Eubanks. He helped and followed when he could. But nobody filled in any spaces he vacated, and he got stuck in the middle a lot. That’s where we missed Tres.
edit: The other place we missed Tres was on O in the lane, and, following, on the free throw line. They were aggressive on D. When Alie-Cox climbed all over Drew then “blocked” his shot without getting a blatant fourth foul at about 8:30, I thought to myself that Alie-Cox would have probably sat most of the game if Tres were there.
oof – GP@ got played on that last VCU basket
VCU shooting 52%. OSU 38% from the field.
VCU is simply a much better team. Need a miracle.
Pac-12 is so bad. Holy crap. Just shows how meaningless RPI is. Eyeball test is a better gauge.
Bruce, Thompson, and Payton — unleash them. Have Eubanks hit the boards hard. But instead I see the Olaf is back in. Not good….
No-laf
No-laf is good.
And there’s Bruce with the miss.
If you can’t finish inside, fucking make the extra pass! Are our bigs not in position to finish or what?
Reid gets stuffed so badly they figured it had to be a foul
Olaf does not even move towards the loose ball. Ugh.
He might get knock over and get an booboo.
precisely – 3 times at least, I’ve noticed he had a chance for loose balls – looked as if he couldn’t find it – for crying out loud, it’s not a baseball lost behind the plate.
How do you give up two loose balls on one defensive possession?
Excellent coaching?
Olaf is incredibly slow. He was supposed to be there for help defense and couldn’t move 5 feet to get in position
Finally, Olaf sitting down again. Hope that’s the last time we see Olaf.
Wow, Bruce…
2 point game, somehow…
Olaf just getting eaten alive inside. Seems like Big Rak could at least hold his ground and rebound better?
Bruce does not lack confidence.
New nickname. Bailout Bruce?
Holy shit.
Derrick Bruce….leave him in!
this team needs someone with his aggression….hope more like him are on the way next year.
Yes. Yes there are.
Yikes, that changed quickly.
and back the other way just as fast….
That’s what I meant…
Well I mean, I don’t really understand basketball, but I’m pretty sure that one the dude slaps the other dude in the arm as he’s shooting, that should be a foul. But I guess these refs don’t.
We bitch because it’s our team and we’re seeing them make the same mistakes all season.
But I think if you’re a neutral observer, this is a very entertaining game.
STjr is worthless today.
Hard hedging the pick and roll is such a bad idea against VCU. Their guard can shoot threes and it prevents Bruce from recovering in time and gives VCU good looks. They should be dropping Eubanks back and taking away the drive and having Bruce going over the screen
I haven’t gotten to watch much this year, and I was trying to figure out what our strengths were early on. I finally figured out what our one strength is.
Dunking.
I don’t see them getting enough stops and then converting on the other end…anyone think we win? I don’t. So much energy is spent coming back from deficit that it’s hard to finish the job.
Would help if these officials didn’t suck donkey dick. I mean, maybe I’m wrong, but it’s hard to officiate when you’ve got such a large member in your mouth, I’d imagine.
No, that one run but VCU is taking care of business.
Bruce has gone into ball hog mode.
Beavers hard hedge on yet another pick and roll and VCU gets to the foul line. There’s zero benefit to hard hedging out there. Puts the team out of position
You know its bad regarding Reid, when the best thing you can say about him is you didn’t notice he was in
Eubanks needs some O besides the dunk!
At least drew hasn’t miss a dunk….unless he missed one in the first ten minutes?
And Angry said I couldnt dunk with 1 hand……smh….
OSU is so streaky. It’s like the seniors and the freshmen were given different game plans by WT.
Can’t rebound shit.
I can’t even figure out what’s going on under the basket. The rebounds are right there and nobody moves or gets into position…it’s mind boggling how much space VCU has had under the basket the entire game.
Always out of position…..always.
But why? There’s a small box of space — just stand in it and put your body in front of the other guy.
I know. It’s like they think they can’t move to get a loose ball.
Eubanks has some terrible positioning. He doesn’t anticipate well and if the ball doesn’t fall into his lap he won’t get the rebound. This team needs frontcourt help next season in the worst way
That’s what I see, but I still don’t understand WHY.
I’m not sure it will ever make sense to me since it’s so easy to just move.
I confuses me too. I think it’s like billiards, some people can see the angles for shots others can’t. We have a lot of shitty billiard players on the team….the worst a thankfully leaving. I hope the new guys coming in are better.
Rebounding.
Rebounding?
We make it to the tournament and we still can’t rebound.
At least we have a second game today. Let’s hope those Beavers put it in the hole a little better.
…that’s what she said.
I approve that message.
Well, I thought they’d win this game, but still you have to say its been a good run and successful season to get back to the tourney after such a long absence. That said, there are some huge holes in this team that will need to be addressed and filled if it is going to win these types of games and get out of the one-and-done realm. Front court and GP II is going leave a huge hole too.
That’s depressing.
That loss is worth three CBI wins. Progress JB
That loss is worth all the wins of all the teams who ever played in another tourney.
I’m back in the mode of not wanting to play a mid-major from Indiana in the first round next year.
Life is right once again.
Three of our starters were just no-shows offensively in this game. Olaf, ST jr. and Duvivier combined for 11 points and shot the ball like shit. Not the first time that’s happened though, but its the kiss of death in the NCAA tourney. I think we’d have been right there with VCU with Tinkle playing, but his absence left just too big a hole up front.
Let’s hope the women kick some butt this afternoon.
Not really b/c if Tinkle played Bruce wouldn’t, and Bruce made up for that lack of Tinkle’s scoring.
The issue was rebounding mostly, but FTs sucked (I think, haven’t looked at the numbers) and the game plan sucked (too many jump shots, no aggressiveness).
Thompson looked jittery/nervous all game. MD a deer in headlights. Olaf was Olaf.
Could be, but I think we’d done a bit better inside and on the boards. Not saying we’d have won, but it might have been a one or two basket game.
Tinkle would have provided rebounding and FT’s so not sure about your reasoning here?
True, but he mentioned points, and Bruce put upTinkle is an okay rebounder but not great. I think he would have helped for sure. Big fan of his game. They could have put him in for MD, which would have been a nice upgrade. But I’m not sure Wayne Tinkle would do that. He only played Bruce once T.Tinkle went down, and he seems committed to MD for some reason. A lineup of Payton, Thompson, Tinkle, Bruce, and Eubanks and they probably would have won.
Duvivier can take an opponent out of a game on D. Bruce and Stevie need to hit the weight room and concentrate on lateral strength. Jaquori will come in with a little more meat than they did.
Just think of all the line-ups we’ll have next year. And who will we get in the late signing?
Where’s RanYakumo? My 5 minute prediction right again. 100% still with those ESPN level platitudes.
Ill send you a merit badge in the mail, until then keep patting yourself on the back for hating on OUR team.
It’s not our team. It’s their team; our alma mater. And I don’t hate them.
#CORFing
Fair enough and I’m not one to rag i respect u and thank u for the site. But the frase beaver believer cones to mind. No matter thick or thin. I was lucky enough to make the uw game and took my girl from Washington. We pulled it off by never stop believing and hoping inthe chance which payed off and she became a fan. All i mean to say is that if u want ur team to keep fighting then fight with them even if its not probable.
What an embarrassing huge blowout upset loss. Don’t worry beavsies, in another quarter century you can recruit Gary Payton Jr Jr Jr, then you’ll be right back to getting housed in the first round.
8 points is a blowout?
Need more rapists to be competitive.
Is cumber buns a nickname your boyfriend gave you?
We need a defensive anchor in the middle. Having a great perimeter defender like GP2 is nice but he only really guards one person. Having your best defender be a post player changes the entire way you play D.
We needed Ruth.
She doesn’t jump a lot but in this game neither did Eubanks.
Can’t say this is unexpected. Most people thought this was a pretty easy VCU win and in the end it was. The Beavs still made the tourney ahead of my expected schedule, but apparently that came from an extremely weak Pac-12, as evidenced by all these first round loses. Cal about to lose to Hawaii right now to cap off a horrible first round. I expect the Ducks to beat a 16 seed, but after that, who knows.
67% of the picks were for VCU, so don’t know what you mean by “Most people”?
That 67% is a majority?
2/3 majority…….yes.
Cal lost mostly cause their leading scorer and best perimeter defender as well as one of their best shooters were out. They had no chance after that. OSU missed Tinkle and USC’s frontcourt depth really took a hit with an injury. Not a great postseason for the PAC-12 but injuries played a major role in that
I don’t think Jabari Bird player either.
I liked Hawai’i this year. I haven’t seen them that athletic since the late 90’s.
There’s not a lot of maturity in our tourney teams. And I can’t help but think we suffered as a conference because the quality of the Pac refereeing didn’t prepare us well enough for this postseason.
Well Reid is gone so Nunez is safe…
Conference of Chumpions?
I really hope this ends the east coast bias crap. The committee was very generous to the Pac, and they blew it.
The latter has nothing to do with the former. There were more West Coast teams that got screwed. The parity speaks to mid-majors being given little respect as well. It’s more obvious than regional selection and seedings. ANd it has happened as more P5 schools get more money and play more of their games at home with guarantees.
Dux & Utes still in…damn the Pac sux this post season
Wash still in NIT
Next year will come down in large part to Drew’s development. STJ, Bruce and Tres are gonna get buckets and I think McLaughlin is gonna be very good but they need Drew to improve in the paint and they need him to improve defensively. I’d also like to see Wayne change his approach in pick and roll defense. Start dropping the big guys to protect the rim more. That adjustment would really benefit the players.
We’ll have a single-digit in the loss column at the end of next year.
Bold prediction, but hopfully so.
Very excited about the future of the program. Ahead of schedule we make the tourney. Garner valuable experience and get a little taste to provide motivation.
I think we are better next season with some of the dead weight gone (Seniors). Some talk that even GP2 didn’t get along with teammates.
Bruce showed what a good drive and kick PG can provide. I loved that he got some experience and stepped up. One thing I noticed about Tinkle’s teams, is the next man up and somebody always seems to deliver.
I like Eubanks, he seems to be getting better. He needs to improve, stay on the court more and play smarter. Big G I like as well, again a Freshmen who needs to improve his play but I like his post moves, needs to attach basket better. Bruce looks like he is going to be great. Like that he shoots the three efficiently, and doesn’t force much. Tinkle has a good shot, plays tough in space, needs to improve his agility and hope he can stay healthy. N’daye also will be somebody who can provide some minutes, has a decent low post moves, just needs to run the pick and roll a little better offensively and defensively. I like the the recruits we got coming in.
We know what we will get with MD and Reid, their ceiling has been reached, however they can provide some depth.
So overall, I can’t wait to see what this team does next year. Get healthy get to the training table, put on some weight, work on their games comeback dedicated. I like our chances next season.
Who didn’t Payton get along with, and why?
It’s not that he doesn’t get along with anyone. It’s that he’s his father’s son, and he’s competitive always when it comes to hoops. That leads to some hair pulling every now and then. But it’s all good.
Hearing there was some resentment from his exposure/love. Not to suggest there isn’t any respect, but also it seems like GP2 doesn’t hang with the teammates. I think there will be a much better chemistry with the team next year, more defined roles, and a team aspect that we didn’t always see this year.
Just from watching, I thought that GP2 and STjr did not have the best chemistry on offense throughout the season. Using a business cliche, I thought they were in their own silos some of the time. Don’t know if any that was because of off court relationships or just style of play?
Thought the dynamic changed when Bruce was added, maybe because Bruce is more of a true PG?
Thank goodness Reid is gone now!
He follows LM-W, Gomis, Olaf & GP@ out the door…
* GP2
Great season. Fun times watching GP2 and his dad on the sidelines, and the future is bright. There’s a lot of holes but a ton of room for growth, and I’m excited to see the progress. This team will be there again next year, but next year I’m hoping for at least one win in the tournament.
Watching some other games and Michigan State might blow my bracket all the way apart. I have them in the Final Four.
That’s good perspective. I was just hoping for 1 win this year. Got greedy.
CJ, good post — losing all those guys (except gp2) will help. I think they will be better next year b/c Bruce and McLaughlin can step in for GP2. Kone is a key. They need him to be pretty good right away. Eubanks is iffy…I thought he was really promising, but as he played more, I began to see he has zero court awareness and lacks confidence. Not sure that can be taught.
Kone is the key, but he is coming off knee surgery so who knows.
Same. I was hoping they’d get that first win, but I was under no illusions that this was a team that was going to go very far in the tourney. When we contend for a Pac-12 title, or make it to the final of the Pac-12 tourney, or make it into the Top 20, then I think my expectations will ratchet up. I too hope Kone can come in and make an impact next year. The future looks good at guard and MD moves to the bench. But that front line really needs some development.
I think eubanks will only get bettet. He is very green but had athleticism that will benefit everyone in the long run.
He needs to get some specific, individualized coaching on how to play his position and learn post offense. Not run up and down the court playing some AAU-like summer league bullshit.
This MTSU/MSU game is some good stuff.
That was awesome. I don’t care that I had MI State winning it all. My bracket was destroyed long ago just want to see upsets now.
Really throws a wrench in the “MSU should be a 1 seed” argument.
Well, I had MSU losing in the 2nd round anyway, so not a big deal to me. They’ve seemed like the most overrated team all season.
An extra long time out, and an Izzo team gives up the first option on an inbound?
Now CSU-Bakersfield will beat Oklahoma and we’ll have squandered a reasonable shot at the sweet 16.
OU with a huge home court advantage. We’ll see if CSUB has anything in the second half.
Temple being jobbed by the refs is almost over.
I don’t see SDSU staying with Maryland. They’re so small.
Anyone have a link to the ladies game?
Oh well, picking March Madness brackets is stupid anyway, lol.
I know, so dumb……oh wait.
Wow!
I don’t want to be Clemons right now.
edit: and he makes it… and now there will be another five minutes of ref-fest
On the bright side, ladies out to an 11-2 lead to start the game. Your ESPN first five minute rule in effect, Angry?
Here you can listen… I can’t find a damn stream. I guess it’s on ESPN 2 out there, though (still fuggin’ Baylor out here).

Ladies up 11-2 early, Troy is going to fight but they’re just outmatched here.
Game is on espn3 as well, watching it on the tablet.
Beaver girls put a boot to the neck of Troy. They are looking good.
Is there a mercy rule in Women’s Basketball?
When Kalmer, Hill and Brown all get playing time before halftime you know it’s long over.
Disappointing end to an exciting and successful season for Tinkle’s crew. No matter how you slice it, getting to the Dance in year two is pretty impressive. He essentially blended two teams together, the CR leftovers and the freshman, with GP2 being the glue. I would not be surprised if they take a step back next year. The rebounding issue will not go away unless he can pull an Altmann and get a miracle transfer. Hopefully little Tinkles foot issue is not a chronic thing.
Got to see my Beav’s play in person three times and was back in Gill for the first time since my senior year. GP2 was fun to watch! Go Beav’s.
For next year’s team, we’ll have:
SR: Malcolm Duvivier
SR: Cheikh Ndiaye (might leave)
JR: Keondre Dew
SO: Stephen Thompson Jr.
SO: Tres Tinkle
SO: Drew Eubanks
SO: Derrick Bruce
SO: Gligorije Rokocevic
FR: Kendal Manuel
FR: Ben Kone
FR: Jaquori McLaughlin
10 or 11 scholarships with a limit of 13. I’d love to see us bring in a graduate transfer or two to add toughness inside and maybe a spot up three point shooter. We can’t be bringing in young transfers though, from what I hear, Tinkle’s putting together a strong class for 2017.
I like the potential that team has to have a similar record as this year. Honestly, while GP2 was fantastic, I suspect that there is part of Wayne Tinkle that won’t be sad to see Gary Payton leave the sideline. The Pac-12 tournament, they had a running argument throughout the Cal game. I don’t know, it was a weird situation all year long. Anyway, great run fellas, get healthy and see you next year.
fwiw – Manuel should be listed as R-FR
Spot up three point shooter will definitely not be necessary cause STJ, Tres and Bruce will all be able to knock down threes and Duvivier is returning and he can make threes as well. Biggest need is a big guy that can rebound and defend. Drew will get better but I don’t know if he’ll be great in either area and won’t next year, so if they can find a graduate transfer who can come in and start at PF, defend and rebound, it will be a huge boost to the team. Getting A grad transfer also means they’ll be getting a much more polished player, which is something they’ll need on a team filled with young guys. If they find that type of player, they’ll be a 4 or 5 seed in the tournament next year cause the talent will be very good at the guard and wing position.
And trust me, Wayne will sorely miss Gary when their defense takes a step back next season. He actually made their defense look competent a lot of times when it shouldn’t have been. Wayne’s defensive scheme needs a major adjustment but Gary’s instincts defensively masked the flaws of scheme a lot of times. They’ll have an elite offense or close to it next season if they can get a grad transfer, but the defense will take a step back cause nobody else on the team is the type of athlete GPII is and it will show
Regarding the offense, I kind of hope they don’t take so much time of off the shot clock next year, especially in the first half of games. They will have so much quickness at the guard spots and guards that can get their shots. They just need bigs who can crash and get offensive rebounds (and of course defensive rebounds).
Who on the coaching staff is responsible for the shitty performance w.r.t. rebounding? Imo it’s not all on the players.
40 to 28!!! WTF is up with that?
The tallest VCU player to play was 6’9″ Hamdy-Mohamed and his playing time was only 9 minutes.
Again jmo but the coaching career(s) of the coaches who are responsible for the big guys should be in question.
Total bull shit w.r.t. the way this team rebounded all frigging year!!
Agree – the Beavs (except GP2) were rarely even under the basket – I thought Rupp was supposed to be a big man coaching specialist, but I’m starting to wonder.
Wincy vs Pitt is getting good.
So much for my Olaf prediction
It was disappointing to me because they seemed to have so much energy when they made that run to briefly take the lead and then it was gone in a flash. They have got to develop the bigs to be tough inside next year.. I noticed the Egyptian dude for VCU has 5 rebounds in 9 minutes. Olaf has 2 rebounds in 18 minutes and Eubanks has 5 rebounds in 26 minutes.
Cincy, st Joe’s game was awesome. A layup instead of a dunk would have tied the game.
Texas v United was awesome
*UNI
Yes it was, I didn’t even know that happened until the post game of St Joe’s win…..they anchors said it’s the first half court shot to win a tournament game in history. Incredible.
Damn, went to sleep before the end. I picked UNI in my bracket. They always have very good teams.
Love to see UT lose.
The block on Eubanks layup that would have extended OSU’s small lead after the run was the momentum changer. Kinda like that Civil War with the injury in the 4th and then Blount coming in. Had that gone down it would have been down to the wire and maybe OSU takes it. So many Thompson runners, GP2 contested drives to the basket and shots by Bruce and others were just off by an inch. A few more of those go down then likely it would have provided more flow for OSU. On the opposite end their defense let too many of VCU’s be too easy of points made. GP2 could have been kept out of trouble but we just weren’t physical enough in denying points near the basket.
Go back and look at that block. If it’s the one at about 8:30, it was a blatant foul, even in an aggressive game like this one. It’s easy to block a shot when the shooter has 200+ pounds sprawled all over him, weighing him down.
Then they went down court and knocked down a 3, when Drew should have been at the line on the other end.
Not saying it would have changed the outcome but the Beavs might have been up by 4 instead of down by 1 at that point.
It would have put Alie-Cox on the bench with four fouls as well. All our runs started with him resting.
Jack, what are your thoughts on body fouls close to the basket? They don’t seem to be called much anymore. The refs in general seem inclined to let the “spectacular” blocks go. Eubanks is a skinny, freshmen and gets lower bodied on many of his shots which 10 or 15 years ago were always called. I remember when NBA officials would point to the body when players would complain that their blocks were clean.
I’m all for letting defenders play their vertical space if it means they can chest up and take the elbows and shoulders bigs give. There is a low level of give and take which should be allowed because that’s valuable turf. But anything outside that norm is blatant and should be called. Putting a hand on the hip and pushing a shooter is as low rent inside as it is outside. Riding someone until they put up a shot you’ll block because you’re riding them has always been called outside. It should also be called inside.
It also looked like Drew was trying to bring the thunder with a dunk when he could have shielded the shot with his body and made a lay-in instead, and perhaps drawn a foul too. I agree there was a non-call on that block though.
If STj had shot 50% that would have made a big difference
Kids being able to shoot 50% from the field is an artifact of a bygone era it seems.
Didn’t GP2 have a chance to extend the lead to 4 if he had made both ends of the 1 and 1? Instead he knew he shot it too long and lane violated. Sometimes a two possesion lead gives a nice mental boost to the team that gets it in a close game. I believe after the violation, VCU hit a three and were back ahead to stay.
Bye, bye UK.
Hysterical considering Cal was crying like a baby about how they “should have been seeded higher.”
Well here’s my post game thoughts. I went to the game. It was great taking in the atmosphere of the tourney. The town itself wasn’t that great. Not a lot to do. Beer was ok. Definitely go see the OKC bombing memorial.
On to the game,
Definite jitters at the start. Eubanks lost the tip which was a bad omen. Maybe only Payton wasn’t really fazed. Duvivier was just out of it bringing the ball up court. VCU made a lot of tough shots in the first half and shot 52%. Can’t do much about that. They also had ZERO offensive rebounds in the first half but that’s more to do with them making a lot of their shots. The layup at the end of the half was a killer. Offense was very slow, looked like that was the plan bc Tinkle wasn’t pushing them,
Second half,
Thing went a bit better. Players had calmed down a bit. Unfortunately the run came too early. OU fans were very impressed by GPII’s athleticism. STJ couldn’t buy a bucket and VCU made their free throws. Eubanks was absolutely gassed with about 5 minutes to go. He had his hands on his knees at every stoppage. Gave up several easy buckets.
Beavs were outplayed, all of their weaknesses were taking advantage of by VCU. Couldn’t make enough buckets in the first half. VCU went after Eubanks and his inexperience showed. He didn’t realize at one point that he had a clean layup for like 4 seconds. He also gave up or just didn’t have the energy to play defense at times toward the end which resulted in an easy dunk and a few and 1s. Alie Cox showed Eubanks how to be physical in the post.
All in all, this team has a chance to go back again next year. But there’s a lot of things to work on if they want to win an ncaa game.
– Eubanks just needs to play as much as he can during the offseason. Gain experience anyway he can. Take this game as a learning opportunity on how to play very physical in the post. Get into a summer league. There are pro am leagues out there for him to play in.
– Bruce missed Eubanks at least twice on the pick and roll. Got the one alley oop. Took jump shots on the other. If they can get that working during the offseason, it’ll be a deadly weapon next year.
– STJ has got to find a way to be more consistent on the offensive end. Defensively, he’s a lot better than most think. Still think he can add 10 – 15 pds without losing any athleticism.
Tinkle – He’ll need to take over as the leader of the team. Take over as the leading rebounder too.
Big G – Find a 10-15 footer.
Rest of the team, when you have an open look, you better make it.
Free throw shooting – The entire team needs to shoot a hundred plus free throws a day. Teams who shoot over 70% can make runs in the tourney because they can close out games. Not one guy shot over 80% from the line. Meaning no one to really count on at the end of the game. Every good team has one guy who can shoot 80% +.
Rebounding – Pick an identity, learn to get to the right spots. Need to rebound better as a team. It seemed like a few guys leaked out too early to try to score in transition.
But the BIG positive of this…..is that these guys are all so young. This isn’t their ceiling. But they need to grow a lot in the next offseason for them to take the next step of winning the in NCAAs.. I look for them to take the leadership over for the next three years.
I’m on record and still believe the new guys coming in will not be impact players next year. I am hoping that one of them can become a glue guy. At best, one could be the 6th scorer. Rebounds, assists, play hard defense and not turning the ball over is what I expect from them.
With all of that, I do expect them to make it back to the NCAAs next year because of the natural growth from all of the freshman. It should be the expectation. PAC12 will be tough again but with the experience they’ve gained this year’s postseason, they should be able to weather the rough times.
Starting lineup
PG – Bruce
SG – STJ
SG – Duviver
SF – Tinkle
PF – Eubanks
In the rotation –
Big G
Manuel
McLaughlin
N’Diaye
Kone
Dew
Looks like they have openings for 2 more scholarship players…
Also walk ons – Dahlen & Mullen. I’ve heard that Stangel is not coming back.
Hard to say whether or not they’ll add anyone in the spring signing period. There are a lot of good guys still out there who are unsigned. Hopefully the coaching staff can pull off a recruiting upset.
Utes lose today. Quacks are the only Pac team left.
Quiet, I’m trying to eat here and not look bulimic
Please God, no Quacks in the championship game, that’s all I ask. That beady-eyed, helmet headed, rapist-recruiting asshole of a head coach does not deserve to even sniff such riches in his lifetime.
ALL the Pac women’s teams are in the second round!
Wash men play tomorrow in the NIT
