Regarding Texas putting in a freshman quarterback:

No doubt McCoy going down on the 4th snap changed the entire game and really put Texas in an almost insurmountable situation. But, how the heck can a program as “storied” as Texas not have ANYONE on the roster at QB behind McCoy better than an 18 year old true freshman? There isn’t a junior, soph or RS frosh who might have just a little more time with the program with any talent? I don’t care how much potential this kid may have; if he’s a true freshman and hasn’t been the starter, you don’t bring him in the national championship game. You bring in another QB who has more time in the system who knows more of the offense. Kind of shows short sightedness on Mack Brown’s part for not having a more prepared back-up QB. I feel for the Gilbert kid, this just isn’t fair to him at all.

What this says to me is that you have to be ready the minute you walk on the UT campus cause you won’t get better as you go through the system. Great recruiter. Poor developer of talent. I’d take Riley and OSU in a heart beat over UT if I want to grow as a QB.

Lol.

I think that fan exposed their total lack of intelligence about college football. If they watched any college football at all (besides Oregon State), they would have heard ESPN slurp the entire SEC, especially Ole Miss in the preseason. The key to the love for Ole Miss was Javon Snead, who was a transfer from Texas. Snead is now a Junior and has declared for the draft, he made Ole Miss relevant (in addition to McCluster). On a side note, I think that Ole Miss will fall back into obscurity very soon as the entire talent on that roster was recruited by a great recruiter who was the previous head coach (Ed Orgeron).

I read all beaver forums. It’s just that that particular medium has the most embarrassing fans of my team and they should be called out for their delusions. The post above is completely, 100%, delusional and that person needs medical attention. OSU over Austin, Texas, GET REAL.

Hey now. For the reasons given… GET REAL.

Austin boasts a more attractive list of activities for an 18 year old kid with the Warehouse District, 6th Street, SoCo and art and history museums. And while they have the Hill Country and a fairly new wine industry, Corvallis beats them hands down at available outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, hiking, swimming, the Coast, wine tours, etc. Corvallis also provides a more conducive learning environment… because there’s nothing else to do. Seriously… how many 18 year olds go to college for outdoor activities and wine tours?

Then again, Mack Brown probably doesn’t want or need his players to be taking part in anything in the Warehouse District or 6th Street. But what’s a coach to do?

Aren’t you and angrybeaver the same person? LOL. Half of the responses here are all you. Same misspellings and everything.

The answer to your question would be yes. However, you didn’t ask the question you thought you did.

I’m amazed that you spelled ‘misspellings’ correctly given that not one of your sentences–and I use the term loosely–is grammatically correct.

Austin has a lot to do, is a young, thriving city, and the football program has a ton of tradition. Pro scouts look to Texas before OSU…if you’re at all decent you’ll get a lot more attention. Mack Brown has a national title a bunch of big 12 championships, and has put dozens of players in the NFL, so i find the notion that a “QB who wants to grow” should chose OSU over Texas laughable.

      • That 100 Million Dollar budget UT had this year doesn’t hurt things.

I’ve spoken before about Corvallis, nice as it is, just being too small population wise, and it’s effect on…well, everything athletics wise (like OSU should be in Salem or something instead).

Schools like Ohio State and Texas ARE Corvallis basically, without even counting the larger, more populous, football hungry city they lie within.

I thought Mac did do a poor coaching job. Seems his teams have athletically just walked all over people, and in game where they couldn’t, Mac Brown didn’t impress me much. Riley could have done better in my book. I could probably beat Jimmy Johnson in a race if I had a Ferrari and he drove a Pinto…maybe.

        UT receivers, sans Shipley…soft.

        • Some of these schools can play some football too…

Private schools…even BYU has 30K+, as does USC.

          • Sorry, running this into the ground, but Austin Texas is the Capital as well as having about 750k people. Columbus Ohio, about the same thing.

Large market teams, unless you are in a die hard part of the country, do better in most sports, college and pro. The State of Oregon I would not put in the ‘die-hard’ category I’m affraid.

    • I also find it laughable. There are at least two things to consider when making a dumb statement like this:

      1. The offenses are different. The NFL has no bearing on this argument. You go to UT to have a better chance to win championships on the college level while playing in a spread offense. If this dolt would have discussed with a calm demeanor the better opportunity to become an NFL QB by learning and playing in a pro-set offense, then s/he might have a case. UT’s QB’s will still get drafted higher, but high draft status doesn’t equal success at the NFL level. The argument is just too complex to present even here, let alone a meandering rant which manages to insult two schools at once.

      2. Texas and OSU will probabaly never recruit the same QB prospects. They will both assess system needs first. Then they’ll recruit likely targets within regions where they are more comfortable. For Texas that would be Texas, a little bit of the East Coast, Texas, maybe Colorado… and Texas. For OSU that would be California, Oregon, Washington… and California… and apparently other universities.

  2. Bruce Feldman reported on ESPN that the “USC power brokers” have already reached out to Mike Riley about his thoughts should Pete Carroll leave for the Seahawks.

  3. USC fans are going nuts. This is great fun if nothing else.

    What are OSU’s contingencies?

The upside if Riley stays is that recruiting goes high profile. Anyone who is considered a lock for USC job and turns it down would turn some heads from kids looking for stability and loyalty… or at least from their mothers.

    The upside if he goes?

    • I don’t see an upside. Who replaces him? Langsdorf may be alright but it would be really sad if it was Banker because he needs to go. I know that Erickson claims OSU as the best four years of his life, maybe he is unhappy enough with ASU that he would come back. I can’t think of any other candidates.

      • Bronco Mendenhall please. He’s already stated once that he would like to come to OSU (albeit that was 10 years ago). I want nothing to do with Erickson.

      • Agreed on Bronco Mendenhall. Ex-Beav, great coach, good recruiter. I don’t think Riley is going anywhere, though.

Peterson would be a nice choice, but I believe BSU just locked him up long term. I’ve got a huge wish list, but I’m not sure the status/contracts of the guy’s I’d want.

        • I don’t think Mendenhall wants to come here, I think he loves it at BYU. I wouldn’t mind Peterson especially since the ducks hate him now, before Blount Force Trauma I would have said he was next in line to take Chip’s job when Chip leaves because of his history at UO.

  4. I don’t think Riley will leave, but it’s hard to pass up a contract that would pay him the same as the OSU job would in 10 years–or more.

I hear Jim Mora is available, and since he’ll be paid well for the next couple years, he might be available on the cheap. Plus he can stay in the Pacific NW.

I always thought Sylvester Croom got a raw deal at Miss St. He did a good job considering he was treated as a token in the SEC.

And I don’t think Langsdorf is ready for the Pac 10. Looking at the staff, the coach who stands out is Jay Locey. He’s been highly successful as a head coach and as a defensive coordinator in the past. He might hold no loyalty to Banker if he stays.

The Big Three–Mendenhall, Whittingham and Petersen–are all either happy where they are or wrapped up… or both. But I’d take any one of them. The problem is they’re making almost similar money to what we could offer.

No Dennis Erickson please. I want to walk the streets of Corvallis without fear of being punched by a football player.

    • I agree with what you said about Dennis Erickson. I really like your observation about Locey. He was great at Linfield and he really has done alot to bring the team together in his time at OSU. He is the one responsible for many of the team activities that build chemistry, doing similarly at Linfield. Locey could be bright for OSU but first I would have Riley stay. I agree its probably less than a 15% chance that he leaves.

    • And their programs are equal to if not better than OSU….is there that much prestige to coaching in the Pac 10? I guess the one carrot would be to get to a National Championship with fighting the non-BCS battle.
