June football recruiting thread

92

Figured recruiting this week could use it’s own dedicated thread after a big weekend of official visitors as well as a camp which brought in another couple hundred players this weekend.

Already, the first commitment of the day is in and it’s really a pretty big one. Defensive End Omar Speights out of Philly has announced his verbal pledge today.  He’s the step brother of class of 2018 DT Jeromy Reichner.  Listed as a 4* DE on recruiting sites.  Was here on an unofficial visit, so it’s pretty nice we didn’t have to use an official visit either.

More verbal commitments are expected from this weekend.  When I have time later today I’ll add more details to this post, but I was expecting 3-4 new commits, and that was before the surprise announcement from Speights.

Stay tuned to the twitter feed to keep up on the day’s happenings.

      • One thing to note, Speights is the 3rd defensive end pledge already in the 2019 class(Hennessey and Stover being the others)
Williams is also a defensive end. If Oregon State somehow lands Williams, I don’t expect all of those guys to stick around.
Nemec has rumored Hennessey is likely to flip(or maybe that’s his wish) so that might be something to keep an eye on. But ever since they landed his brother last year, Speights has been a likely addition to the 2019 class, so it’s not like OSU didn’t plan for this commitment.

  1. I mentioned a few names of guys to watch as potential commitments this week in a prior thread. At the time, I was looking at the Beavs landing potentially 3-4 new guys, plus a good shot at Piferi in the next few days. Speights was a pleasant surprise addition to that group.

Other guys I’m watching who I think we have a good shot at include:
    Ryan Franke- LB(official visit)

    Michael Erhart- OLB(official visit)

    Wynston Russell- DB.(official visit)

Joey Noble- JC DT(class of 2018 qualifier-official visit)

    Trevon Clark JC WR.(official visit)

Paul Piferi QB(visited 2 weeks ago)

Zach Williams out of Little Rock, AR also visited. I dont expect an announcement from him any time soon, but you never know.

      • His profile doesn’t seem accurate. He’s actually a JC guy. Not sure if he played a year at SacState too, haven’t really looked into it to be honest. He also will be a class of 2018 guy and more likely at DT than DE. Seems like just Smith trying to maximize roster remaining class spots with whatever is still available

  2. So predictable. Speights commits and 247sports immediately dropped him over 100 spots in the national ranking and made him a 3 star.

  3. Speights was the number 1 ranked recruit in Pennsylvania, now he’s number 2. He was the 21st ranked strong side defensive end now he’s the 24th. His 247 ranking is currently 0.8871, I remember it being in the 0.8900s. He was a low 4 star, but is now a high 3 star. This all happened since his commitment.

  4. Had a random annonymous sourse message me the scoop on Piferi.
Says he has committed to Purdue.
Not verified anywhere else yet, so take that with a grain of salt at this time.

      • Eget makes the most sense next. Was told he might work out with Smalls next week after school is out and summer break starts. Also has connections to Trevon Clark who just verbaled.

When looking at our current class, it’s almost all defensive players. Tibesar and Bray het most of the credit, along with coach Legi.
On the offensive side, coach Kafense landed Clark. Not sure who got Gould. Bit that’s it right now on offense.
Haven’t seen much recruiting wise from Lindgren/Riley yet since they arrived on campus, which is a bit worrisome.
Smith gets a pass since he pretty much recruits all serious candidates on either side of the ball, but the other recruiters need to get them to that point.
It is still prettt early, but I’d like to see more encouraging O recruiting soon.

          • Was Hunter Johnson from Cemsom the QB?
He just chose Northwestern over Purdue yesterday, so maybe that played into Piferi to Purdue

      • Think they were onto Piferi before we were. We strung Piferi along until Bachmeier chose Boise St, and then we got serious with recruiting him. He had already unofficially visited Purdue by that point. And then we never gave Piferi an official visit, so he had to pay his own way to come up to Corvallis a couple of weeks ago. If we were really serious about landing the guy, seems like we would go out of our way to pay for his trip. That’s the part that makes no sense to me. We knew his commitment day was coming in June, yet we didnt role out the red carpet while we had other official visitors on campus the same weekend.
We made for an easy opponent for Purdue.

  5. Paul Piferi Purdue – Perhaps he wants to string out the alliteration.

OT – I don’t want to go back to the previous thread and I don’t give a fig about recruiting. Hand me the roster at season’s start. When I heard John Anderson say, in the post-game presser, that Luke is a pro, I wondered if anyone knows of any college baseball coaches’ opinions, what they might have done, given the circumstance, and what they think about how Casey has handled it.

    • Without a doubt and I bet they are beyond thankful that they aren’t in his situation because they would have done the same thing.

          • Well, we all remember what happened last year when SEC umpire Greg Street was calling the game. And ESPN does televise all the games and has a controlling interest. I’m not saying the fix is in but obviously the RPI and a few other factors heavily favor teams from the southeast.

Personally, I think it should be a rule that an umpire cannot work a game that involves a team from the conference he works in the CWS. I think everyone gets the idea but the Beavs/UNC game should NOT have any umpires from the Pac-12 or ACC.

My favorite comment on the twitters tonight was from douche proclaiming how the SEC is all that in baseball and was pissed that two supers had SEC teams playing against each other. Dude, if ANY P-5 conference got almost all of their teams in and hosted 7 of the 16 regionals I’d be willing to bet that conference would do the same thing. Despite only getting 4 teams in the Pac got half of them to Omaha. 3 of 11 from the SEC? Weak.

As of right now, the Beavs appear to be playing the best baseball of the final 8 that I have witnessed. Paul Maineiri and John Anderson agree.

          • Also, based on the seeding, the Pac couldn’t have gotten more than 2 teams in because OSU amd UCLA would have met and UW and Stanford would have met, had UCLA and Stanford made it that far.
SEC had way more potential Omaha candidate as a best case scenario for that league, but only have 3 in.

      • It’s preferential from a strategic perspective to play the earlier game.

Just think about all the commitments teams have during these events. It’s like a bowl week with the games mixed in.

Better to get the game on than sit and anticipate it. Better to be resting in the evening and getting tucked away while the late game’s players are still in pressers and just wanting to take a shower and scarf something before bed. Better to already know your fate as you sit and scout the late game. Etc.

        • Valid points. But 99 and humid Saturday afternoon will take more of a toll on pitchers vs those throwing at night. If Heimlich can’t go deep into the game Saturday, that is a problem for us.

Last year as the #1 overall seed we played the first game. This year the #1 overall seed plays at night. It’s the lack of consistency in how different conference teams are dealt with that is glaring in college baseball.

    • Yes. Florida’s outfield wall is so short I think it still probably would’ve barely gone over the fence or off the top of the wall and over. The Auburn RF made it a no doubter. I agree with the other poster about the amount of errors by SEC teams.

  6. Just for comparison of the mighty SEC…………….That team that the Beavs destroyed by a combined 26-1

    vs Mississippi State went 3-1
    vs Arkansas went 3-1
vs Florida split two games in the SEC tourney, their lone win was 11-0

    Also……………..

vs Texas took 2 of 3 in late February

I know this means nothing but if LSU was competitive and won most of their games against those teams and 4 of those were in the SEC tournament. From what I have watched of the SEC in the postseason I am not impressed with any of them.

  7. Is Oregon State not doing a multiday overnight camp anymore? Also why are they hosting camps while Oregon high school students are still in school? I know that these camps help with recruiting but I think that there is value for home state kids to go to a camp (and sometimes compete against elite athletes). Sometimes you find a walk-on or two from the home grown kids that you otherwise would not have seen.

  8. Who here is coming to Omaha? Do you have your tickets yet? I’m looking at the ticket exchange for Saturday’s game, but right now, outfield GA looks to be the best deal at this point.

  9. Is the ticket office at OSU always so unhelpful/ secretive? Called about CWS tics and the woman I spoke to was a condescending B.

    • the guy I talked to wouldn’t tell me how many tickets they have left, but highly suggested the NCAA ticket exchange instead. Meaning, they are very close to selling their allotment of tickets. I even tried to see if my dad as a football season ticket holder could buy them for me, no go. Has to be a baseball season ticket holder to order them.

      • FWIW – I am meeting a friend in Omaha who went last year and he recommended buying tickets either through StubHub or from someone selling outside of the stadium. I was going to buy from OSU but don’t like the idea of not knowing the seat locations in advance. The CWS-approved “Ticket Exchange” sounds like a headache to use, based on online reviews.

        • I don’t mind the ticket exchange, you just need to have an account set up, be logged in, and ready to place your order immediately; otherwise, someone else can swoop in and buy the tickets. Your best bet is to use an actual computer rather than a smart phone.

          • I can’t remember if we used it or not. I think it was StubHub. Waited until the morning of the game and the prices went down a lot. Could not figure out on the NCAA site where the Beavs were. Guessed and ended up smack dab in the Fullerton section! Luck O da Beavergopher.

        • I was in Omaha in 2013 and last year. I was able to buy tickets through OSU because I am a baseball season ticket holder. The teams’s fans don’t get the best tickets, but they’re far from the worst too. Generally down the foul lines just past the bases. They have the advantage of being reasonably priced, however, which makes up for the lack of presumed exclusivity.

That said, and having been to upwards of ten games (including those the Beavs were not playing in) I always saw scalpers outside the stadium. Typically they are selling the best seats in the house, in the lower bowl between the bases, secured from local customers who can’t go or are trying to make a profit through a recourse to local brokers. However, there are always fans of individual teams, like the Beavs in this case, who have more tickets than users because someone had to go home early, or hasn’t arrived yet, etc. etc. The best way to scout that is to go to the team hotel and sniff around to see if anyone has any extra. You can pick them up for face value.

  10. Last year OSU was the home team in the first game and was behind the 3rd base dugout. Looks to be the case this year as well. :-)

I used the ticket exchange and didn’t have any issues buying that I recall.

    • From what I remember and recalled, the beaver section was in the upper rows like 24-35 or something like that directly behind the beaver dugout. My dad and I went last year and sat right behind the LSU dugout. we bought our tickets the night before the LSU game. So yes, ticket exchange costs go way down near game time. So if I can’t get any tickets by other means or like what I see on exchange this week, I’ll definitely wait to buy closer to game day.
