Just got around to watching the film on Wright…he has good ball skills, but the QB is staring down the WR on every interception. He’s jumping the routes. That’s not going to happen in the PAC. They’re going to have to coach him up fast.
Fisher looks solid. I like how he can hang with a slot receiver. Looks disruptive with good awareness. Might have to lose 10lbs. Both seem like they justify the 3 star rating. I like Fisher a little more.
For now I’m withholding any opinion on Shippen. His film is a all over the place in that he plays offense and defense, and there isn’t a lot of good, recent film. Looks pretty good from what I can see. Offer sheet is great, and he’s highly rated, so he’s probably a player.
I don’t see any of the three as wasted scholarships, so that’s a plus over Riley (and even Andersen).
Feel free to go off topic. If baseball/coaching news breaks we’ll do a thread for that.
Could be first, but I’ll defer.
Maybe the biggest news, btw, is there’s a second kicker on the roster…
Bonus, we’ll have an additional walkon kicker, so 2 guys to push Choukair for playing time.
Jeffrey Nelson and Everett Hayes
Choukair is kind of the “big gunslinger QB” of kickers. He has a big leg and coaches always talk about his ability to hit long FG’s in practice. You’re better off with a more accurate guy that can only hit from 45 than someone who can occasionally hit from 60, but can’t consistently give you high probability points from a reasonable distance.
I lost respect for Choukair when he lashed out about his missed extra point against CU. He put out something on social media about the other points he scored. He clearly doesn’t get that kickers need to be clutch. He cost a shitty team one victory and almost another. He needs to be humble about that.
Did he really say that?
Screw him.
Yup, I think someone linked it here if I remember correctly. Probably a twitter battle, someone called him out and he responded with something like I scored 15 (or however many) other points.
Kicking is not about what you make, but what you miss.
Exactly. It’s a loveless job where you’re expected to make at least high 70s percentage. Making a kick isn’t a story. Missing one is. It sounds like he’s not all there mentally if he doesn’t understand that.
Had a nightmare last night that Choukair shanked 3 chipshots against the Cowboys in game 1.
Appreciate the analysis Angry. Coach Blue will have his work cut out for him this fall, that’s for sure.
With jc transfers, coaches have to go 1 for 1 otherwise it’s a wasted scholarship. The recent track record has not been good. When was the last time a jc transfer had an immediate impact his first year?
Kid for Texas tech just got drafted. Was a captain for the defense as a lb first year.
Steven Nelson too
Treston DeCoud
Checketts not going to SC as speculated per Kendall Rogers.
Is he going to a school in the state of Oregon??
Rogers (remember, he said Casey was returning),
“COACHING SCOOP: There was a lot of buzz that @USC_Baseball’s job was trending the direction of Andrew Checketts earlier today. Checketts, I’m hearing, has decided to stay put at @UCSB_Baseball. Great news for the #Gauchos. #Trojans search continues.”
He was also the first to report Casey was retiring. He’s usually pretty well dialed in.
I agree Rogers is usually dialed in, him thinking Casey coming back makes me skeptical of the program/barnes. Something happened last minute.
My guess is that Casey was burnt out but thought he wasn’t truly done and came to the realization that he is done.
It happens when humans are involved.
And he might change his mind again at some point.
I just hope OSU has a true national search at this point. Casey built a national power in Corvallis and national powers consider all possible options when its time to hire someone new. That is what I expect OSU to do.
I’m hoping (against hope most likely) Mitch Canham is interested and Barnes needs to call him either way
Just threw in the mention of his initial report on Casey’s return as a caveat, the guy is human and it ain’t really over till the fat gal sings.
Just threw in the mention of his initial report on Casey’s return as a caveat, the guy is human and it ain’t really over till the fat gal sings.
Sorry ’bout the echo !!
She’s not fat. She big boned
Actually, Kerry Eggers was the first to report that Casey was seriously considering retiring. So much so that it was was probable. Rogers was among the first to report that this was not true. After considering for a couple of months Casey retired, thus proving Eggers right and Rogers wrong. When Casey officially retired and Rogers reported first, he neglected to mention that a few months prior he misled everyone.
And now, Eggers is up with a piece reminding us of Mitch Canham, he concludes:
Eggers is purely speculating. If Canham is truly in the running, Barnes would need to travel to meet with him. Meaning no decision this week.
Hard to see Canham leaving in the middle of his season. The timing is probably not right even though he’s probably the best choice. Money could make a big difference. Minor league managers like their players don’t make that much money.
The one question with Canham is when would he be able to start? Does his contract with the Mariners allow him to leave midseason for another job or would he not truly take over until September?
He’d have to start right away for recruitment. His contract is a non issue. He can quit anytime.
He’s a longshot though. Mariners have shown him a lot of loyalty. Moved up the ranks nearly every year.
But if it’s really his dream job, then the chances become 50/50.
Do you know he can quit anytime?
I know we are used to football/basketball coaches quitting to take new jobs in the middle of contracts but they aren’t allowed to leave in the middle of the season (not counting bowl games) for a new job (or at least I’ve never seen that happen) so how do you know he can just leave for another coaching job?
If he was leaving for another job in pro baseball, he might have contract issues but going to college baseball, no. They aren’t the same industry.
I don’t know if that is true. It’s still a coaching job just in a different league.
We will probably never know since Yeskie is most likely getting the job anyway.
No doubt Canham would be a great leader and has the coaching experience. The unknown to me is his ability to identify and develop high school talent. Yeskie has proven he can do that.
It would be hard to name Canham HC, and Bailey not leave, which if Yeskie wants to stay, then make him Associate HC. So what will happen if continuity doesn’t continue? I feel if Yeskie gets the job, then Bailey will certainly leave feeling slighted and not given the opportunity after being under PC for so many years. If I recall, not a lot of “Interim” HC make it to a regional in their first year of taking over a program, right? I would say if Bailey gets the HC job, Yeskie gets promoted to Associate HC, and then do we need a knew pitching coach, or would we hire Andy Jenkins to a paid assistant role?
Jenkins was made a paid assistant this year, I think. Gipson is the unpaid assistant. Gipson would have been the one who benefitted from the third paid assistant.
Canham has been developing college age kids. Recruiting might be a question but he has spent his entire coaching career developing players.
Pretty impressive resume for Yeskie here…

Mitch Hickey. AKA the gas can. Thanks for that reminder. I’d almost completely purged him from my memory.
Point being if we can continue to recruit and develop top pitching, this team will remain a PAC 12 power. Oregon State, Stanford, and UCLA have had the best pitching staffs for the last several years. Stanford much longer actually.

The Wasikowski nacho smorgasbord dosen’t sound as appetizing.
Haha..
Never heard of him. A very underwhelming hire IMO
Agree. Was an asst. with Horton. His team at Purdue year before last was pretty good and did the lean into the pitches routine just like the Ducks. His teams are aggressive on the base paths to the extent of being stupidly aggressive. Saw them run into a lot of outs against my Gophers. I wonder how many said no to the job offer? He is supposed to be a good recruiter.
I view Austin Meek as a clone of Kerry Eggers, but for the toilet seat gang. He writes about Wasikowski here:
https://www.ducksports.com/sports/20190611/new-oregon-baseball-coach-mark-wasikowski-says-ducks-have-strong-foundation
Gotta wonder how the injuries to the Boilermakers compared to those of the Beavs. We know how the W/L records compared.
There is a trend there, Boilermakers “on firm footing for bounceback” and ucks “at a place now that’s a tremendous foundation for me and my staff (and the team)”.
A positive thinker!…………but what else would one expect him to say?
UPDATE (just for grins):
Kendall Rogers doesn’t mention Boilermaker injuries as the reason for a poor W/L this year, says, “Purdue had some turnover in the offseason, which led to a disappointing 2019 campaign.”
He adds, of the ducks, “they haven’t tasted success in a while, and changing that culture will be the top priority for Wasikowski and his new staff.”
Nebraska is supposed to be trying to hire the Creighton coach. I believe we are playing Nebraska again next year in Surprise.
Guessing 2020 commit Mick Abel may not be coming to Corvallis if he’s touching 97 his junior year.

Hopefully he wants to have the college experience. Adley should talk to him.
And Nick. And Kevin his not brother.
Find the quote from Adley’s dad. It’s in one of the many videos about Adley and his family. Something about college baseball being the best team experience a player will ever have. Friends for life, etc.
If he is offered 7 figures he needs to go pro. You can always go to college later in life, no guarantees of a 7 figure payout 3 years later. Especially for a pitcher with the injury risk.
Don’t get me wrong, I hope he makes it to campus.
Let’s see if his elbow holds up. Throwing that hard at that age can be detrimental. More and more guys have tj surgery at younger ages.
Spoken like a true Beav fan……………always expect the worst LOL.
No, read the book “The Arm” by Jeff Passan. Great baseball book read.
I think a lot of the injuries are a result of specialization at too young an age. No great athlete should limit themselves to 1 sport until at least Junior year of high school and even that is early in most cases.
So the Oregonian decided to run a hit piece on the entire athletic department, what are they trying to do by pointing out we didn’t win at any sport this year? Seems like an inside job with how personal it is and I have a few ideas of who we could be looking at. Totally unfair the angle they chose to take with this, pointing out uncertainty with baseball instead of praising their accomplishments and propping up an athletic department in desperate need of positive publicity.
We dont read the Oregonian here. It’s better suited as bird cage liner, and it’s not even very good at that.
Your cat should have crapped on that and spared the flower pots…
My cat had better taste than that. His name was Liberace for crying out loud.
You must be new to the Oregonian’s relationship with Oregon State University athletics. I expect nothing less.
Dang, this shocks me and really ruins my day.
You are totally not a Duck fan. Obviously a life long OSU fan lol.
Way OT:
Cal WBB HC Lindsay Gottlieb hired as Asst. Coach for NBA Cleveland Cavaliers, makes her the first women’s collegiate head coach recruited to an NBA staff.
Some joker comments, “Cal will throw money at Rueck. I feel it.”………..C’mon, Say it ain’t so!!
From the ESPN story:
The hygienist is going to the NBA? Why give up a P-5 HC gig to be an asst.?
Well played! Who here better to spot a hygienist.
Gotta go down near the top of the all time list for the split personality rodent!
How are they going to do that???
Last I’d heard Cal athletics was buried in debt from the most expensive stadium renovation ever. Over 22 million in debt. Has that changed? Who knows but judging by their men’s basketball and football head coaching hires in the last couple years I’d say it’s not likely they could afford to entice Rueck.
My worthless two pesos………
Edit: This is from when they fired Wyking Jones. Turns out over 440 million in debt.
“There’s also the money issue. Cal was only paying Jones $1 million a year, and the Golden Bears’ athletic department is in severe debt. It went into about $440 million of debt due to a renovation to Memorial Stadium, where the football team plays. It’s unclear whether the department has the money to attract a big-name replacement.”
Article was from March 25.
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/insider/story/_/id/26352800/cal-coaching-search-familiar-name-replace-wyking-jones
A California public institution drowning in debt. I’m shocked.
https://mobile.twitter.com/MM2_Era/status/1137913553854164999 Congrats
If only Gary Andersen said yes.
He did……………..to the cheerleading coach.
That’s the first time I’ve seen someone who played for Anderpants get to take a knee
You guys crack me up
Maybe that’s why M3M lost the starting job and transferred??? He wouldn’t take a knee?
One of us is not getting the other’s joke but I’m not totally sure who
I got your joke. I just took it and ran to a worse level. It’s what I do because I’m a horrible person. Cheers!
Ohhhhhhhh you dirty dirty napkin
Bails had his interview today….
McDonald’s?
You’re an idiot
Says the guy who claims to knows Pat Casey personally and said he’s coming back.
I do but so do a lot of people. That’s not saying much. And people “in the know” will tell you they all believed he was coming back and things changed at the end.
Hot shower. Bow chicka bow bow
What? They have a university. Maybe hes interviewing for the new baseball coach job. I hear the Hamburglar has a mean slider…..
I’m a little suspicious there may be a transfer eventually coming down the pipeline from Boise St.
OLineman with connections to both Coach Legi and Coach M.
I put a few feelers out, will see if anybody can share any updates or if it has legs.
https://mobile.twitter.com/KendallRogers/status/1139179023941156865
Still no word on who the token interviewee is?
Also, if we’re only up to interview #3, then this is a pretty sad national search. We’re in the middle of week2 since the job was posted and the only known guys to be interviewed live in town.
Agree. This should have thought out several months ago with a plan in case Case pulled the plug.
If Canham wants the job I personally see no need for any interviews beyond him. He has proven he knows how to develop talent (4 years as minor league manager) and win with that developing talent (won minor league titles as manager) plus he comes from the Pat Casey tree and Beavers family so he understands what it takes to win in Corvallis.
Offer him the job now.
Looks like we picked up another Nebraska transfer. Caleb Lightbourn. He’s the punter who moonlighted as a kicker for Nebraska when their kicker went down and had one of the worst kicks to happen on a national stage. Guy has had a rough patch with fans, but seems like a good dude. Just hope we don’t further crush his ego at OSU.
https://twitter.com/4th_n_10/status/1139206120734461952
So now we have Choker AND the dude who almost faceplanted on a backwards kickoff? That’ll be a fun competition to watch for the starting job
WORST KICKOFF EVER:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3H2yYHtQf4
He will fit right in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fez5_Ee4fww
At least his went forward a yard, no?
And as far as onside kick results go, I’ve seen worse. And he was technically a punter forced to fill in as an injured kicker. But the falling down part….that hurts.
.
Don’t worry, when he goes pro he’ll become a multi time pro bowl punter.
At least we don’t have Bruce Reed!!
https://www.lmtonline.com/sports/article/Errors-costly-as-Tecos-lose-fourth-straight-series-13983714.php Luke update
Another transfer shows smith and co have created an environment that is desirable to some student athletes. Who knows how these guys will do with a change of scenery. It is a positive that guys want to play for the Beavs.
Let’s hope it’s because “they want to play for the Beavers” rather than “the Beavers are the only team who will take them”. Time will tell.
It’s Canham
https://mobile.twitter.com/KendallRogers/status/1139306467297832960
Hopefully the staff stays intact…
Well I doubt Jenkins is ok with going back to unpaid so someone will be the odd man out.
I’d imagine Bailey is the odd man out if they try to keep the current staff.
Adley wins the Golden Spikes award!
Junior Walling committed. Good news but I’m bummed about Yeskie getting passed over.
Me to
Once again my source was correct. Barnes wasn’t in a rush to hire Bailey or Yeskie this week. He was blown away by Canham and made the offer.
Should expect other schools to go really hard after Yeskie now.
What was the knock on Yeskie?
It’s not a reflection on Yeskie, it’s just Canham was better.
Does Yeskie have a buyout?
Wonder how much of this was a financial move where Barnes knew he could recoup some money for Yeskie’s contract buyout?
I like Canham though. Time for a fresh start it appears.
As of 2016 the assistants were on 1 year deals. I can’t find anything that confirms whether that changed with Yeskie’s raise last summer. I think 1 year deals are the norm though and he is likely free to walk if he chooses.
Thread up on the hire let’s hear opinions there.
