Sounds like Bradford, Jefferson, tago, and eldridge are going to play. That’s a lot of reinforcement. If we can contain the run and wreak some havoc I think they win. This new coordinator might be coming after Luton hard today.
I’m gonna say good stop. Our guys are tackling well and the line is in contain on Tate. If the plan is to contain the run and force them to win with Tate’s arm I think we just saw how the game will go.
From that first Arizona drive I think they are in for a long day. Our guys are attacking the ball pretty well and those tackles have some umph. If Arizona keeps trying to grind us down it’s gonna be frustrating for them. That drive was scripted and they still struggled to get 3.
I think the bend but don’t break style works great with our personal. Out coverage guys aren’t good enough for aggressive styles. Just keep it infront of you and make the tackle. We’re pretty solid inside the 10 lately.
A thought while watching UW-Utah: The P12 used to be known as a high-scoring, pass-first conference. This year, the three best teams are physical teams with good defenses that probably run better than they pass. And Stanford isn’t one of them!
Too early to say a win, but if we get to 4 the rest of the schedule is house money. 4 had to be the minimum. Shame Smith cost us early wins we could be at 6-2 if we finish this game.
I am really liking our smash mouth run attack and play calling by lindgren. This offense is fun to watch. Defense needs to quit getting penalties and get a stop.
When is the last time we could get pressure with 4 dudes? Defense is so improved. I watched the colorado win replay from last year and it’s hard to even compare.
I had hamilcar as the player to watch on the Stanford blog. He was breaking out then, though few saw it.
Also had him as a 4-star I think. Clear high talent.
The improvement in sacks is mostly him but still nice to see in the team stats. Can’t believe we haven’t lost a fumble this year either.
Interior pressure is helping too. Cuts down ham having to run a huge loop when the qb has to move around. Better angles for the outside guys this year.
True. But, we might be good. Legit good. and Legit good makes more of the remaining games winnable.
Maybe a shot at the Silver Bowl, or Blockbuster Bowl, or, dare I say, Bluebonnet Bowl?
You guys are getting ahead of yourselves with bowl talk. Time for a bowl was putting the correct players on the field vs Hawaii and Stanford. Likely we don’t win another game. Still improvement to be excited about (if we hold the lead).
I agree with you. Last 4 games I expect competitive losses outside UW. I see ASU as the best shot followed by WState. Ducks are a good match up imo but unlikely to win that. UW I’ll be happy if we score 14 and stop their offense twice.
Those losses taught our team alot. These guys went from cautious to attacking (specially on defense). Losses suck but if the team responds then it’s money for the future.
Mahalichek(sp?) was with DE in the Fiesta Bowl years. Seems like his coaching abilities hasn’t changed. So glad to have him as our online coach again. That’s a big difference the last 2 years.
Interesting how they go with Jermar in the redzone vs AP. Makes sense though with Jermar as a more power back vs finesse runner like AP. AP the ultimate team player today allowing Jermar to get the rushing TD’s.
In my opinion that Lavaka ‘hold’ was not a hold. It was a very athletic play.
Ok, that was more impressive by Lavaka because his arm wasn’t stretched out grabbing jersey. He had the middle of the chest and was holding the defender off with one hand
It’s a throw you’d expect from a backup level QB. WR gets wide open and he throws it within a 5 yard radius, letting the NFL talent take over and do his thing.
Washington still looks like a good team. They’ve lost close to some better teams, but Eason is pretty accurate and I expect him to pick our D apart. He was forcing a lot of throws later against Utah because he didn’t really have any other options.
I feel bad for Taylor. He’s a great back. He can add trucking both safeties on one play to his draft tape. He even blocks really well. Their whole offense is just him going nuts.
He’s a fucking pygmy like Quizz. He’s lucky these guys haven’t decided to just rip his head off every time they feel facemask. They’re gonna draw the flag anyway, make him earn it.
schematically I thought the D was set up well, but the tackling in open field was below par for the season as a whole. I think “Call me Mr. Tibbs” gets that cleaned up.
Mostly hating officials. There were about 3 legit penalties. How was there no holding on that play either?!? The Arizona player was literally laying on top of our defender like he was a WWE wrestler looking for the 3 count pin!
I’ve been gone a month. Thought I was permanently banned. I did miss you guys though. Angry, can we at least agree that Luton is a serviceable starting QB in the Pac 12? Not the best but not the worst either.
Luton played pretty well today, and I’ve been as critical of him as anyone on this site. His principal improvement is that he’s not allowing himself to get into a six consecutive bad possessions in a row syndrome. Of late he’s limited it to one quarter, not a whole half.
-Hamilcar Rashed set the single season sack record at 12.5 on the year (3.5 added today). For perspective he is 13th in pac 12 history with 4 games to play.
– Luton is simply average but he managed to compete some today after jitters in the 3rd quarter. Stat line was bananas 20/26 for 328 yds and 3 td.
– Hodgins had another huge game 150 yds 2 tds.
– Togiai had his best game of the season 5-69 and a td. Showed real hands again and trucked some people pretty hard. Good blocks too.
– Team rushed for 244 yards and 5 tds. JJ and AP both went over 100 yards.
– JJ Taylor was held to 167 total yards. That sounds bad but last year he had like 300 something.
Honestly kinda ugly game but we got the win and it was entertaining. Can’t say enough about how impressive Ham is this season. Maybe we should be more worried about him going Pro than Hodgins.
It was entertaining for sure, which is improvement and hopefully puts more people in Reser. OSU now at a point where odds are good they will compete and entertain.
I thought Hodgins should have been rested at 42 points. He’s too important too risk. Ask Lindsey and Bailey to step up. Lindsey was gaming today.
I have been neural on the whole Luton debate but with that being said he does get those deer in the headlights moments in games and it cost us against Hawaii and Stanford. The last 2 games he has had the same issues in the 2nd half but he has been able to shake himself and finish both games strong. That is growth and should build his confidence down the stretch this season.
Beavs are in 2nd place in the north, and the only one with a shot to catch the Ducks. Stanford loss is now more haunting than the Hawaii game. If the Beavs continue this roll, and legitimately have a shot to win the North, Smith may be national coach of the year…I have accepted Luton and his foibles, and at this point I am on board with what JS is doing. Tibesar has the D playing better than we’ve seen in about 7 years.
2 TD drives for UA were trash refs and the rest of the game was a well played bend not break approach.
Beavs offense is likely the most balanced since Matt Moore era.
I am kind of starting to dream about the possibility of Beavs actually winning the last 4 and going to the conference championship. LOL Keeping my eyes peeled for peppermint patty to pull the ball away next week.
And keep in mind that the Beav defense has not shown much propensity for creating turnovers yet. Turnovers make or break many a season, the offense may keep up this incredible ball security this season, but it can’t be expected from year to year.
Yes, but if your opponent relies heavily on turnovers to win games, it’s similar to relying on Home runs in baseball. Oregon state does not rely on turnovers to win ball games, but they do look to take advantage of turnovers. It helps when your offense doesn’t turn the ball over to the opponents. Helps take pressure off the defense to mandate a take away to get the ball back.
What I’m saying is that this season is a statistical fluke with only two turnovers through eight games. We can’t count on it in future seasons, so the team needs to get even better.
As the ducks get exposed at USC. The Beavs will still be in charge of their own destiny for PAC 12 North title going into second week of November. A casual observer can’t fault that improvement Hope the trend continues.
One good thing about Oregon winning is that give it gives the more deserving team in the south (Utah) a chance to beat them in the conference title game.
More like the Trojans are soft and can’t run the ball anymore. They stopped recruiting legit running backs about 4 years ago and bought in to the 7 on 7 model of the air raid being a winning format. Not so much…
BTW The Ducks have taken more cheap shots than a than a drunk in a 1 star casino. I thought Crystal Ball was some great upstanding saint of a coach, but now he is exposed. His defense thinks spearing, late hits, maiming guys knees is worth being called ‘physical’ play. I don’t mind watching truly physical defenses but the ducks don’t know how to be physical without incorporating cheap shots, trash talk, late hits, head to head hits on a regular basis. Not a fan of it
USC’s top 3 or 4 RB’s are injured and they only have one left (and he’s a HS track star, not a workhorse back).
Phil has had two guys ejected for targeting and there have been plenty more cheap shots all over the field. On one play, Brady Breeze basically gut punched the receiver on a crossing route, then the other Duck safety picked off the pass. No flag.
Oregon State feels like it could have Clemson’s trajectory from about six years ago. Young coach in Smith who like Dabo Sweeney is proving early on he can win and then maintains momentum and culture and picks up substantially in recruiting to keep it churning.
May be a few pauses as Beavs will face stiff competition but definitely feels like Smith has chance to build a consistent winning mindset in this program and build something special. Timing of enhancements to the stadium should coincide nicely.
His recruiting results are matching his early comments on recruiting. Lines he wants size and guys ready to play, defense he wants length, skill players he wanted speed.
Seems like he’s getting exactly what he wants. I will also say that he has adapted to the transfer portal better than any coach i can think of. That may have just been luck but it does like he understands that he can fill gaps and increase.competirion with seasoned transfers. I also read something that said recruiting from the portal is significantly cheaper in time and money. For a low budget team it’s a great strategy.
And considering two nice transfers who would have received considerable snaps on defense are out for the season in Gumbs and Reichner, Smith is off to a great start.
Yup! Considering results in the past when we had injuries with Riley I’m really impressed with the next man up mentality. Smith doesn’t seem to spend half the scholarships on development
I caught some of the game. Anderpants looked defeated to me on the sideline when BYU went up two touchdowns. Not much emotion. What’s up with his nose? Noticeably Rudolphesque in the cold Logan weather.
Nice to see Scott Frost is in a tailspin at Nebraska. Lost in a late score to Purdie, which was playing with their backup QB.
Wisconsin up next, followed by Maryland and Iowa. They may only have a shot a one other win this year and fans are starting to turn on him
Doesn’t help when he shows up to a press conference and tells the reporters his team is soft for showing up to the Minnesota game wearing hoodies during warmups. All while he’s wearing a hoodie during the press conference.
What a bunch of pussies for wanting to be warm during warmups.
Martinez (oft injured supposed savior of the program) was healthy and played against Purdue. It was Purdue who lost a QB during the game and was down to their second or third-stringer. Another bad loss for #TPB. Phil Steele predicted Nebraska would be the most improved team in the country, it will be interesting to see how he spins this one when his publication comes out in the summer. He hypes the accuracy of his list.
Regarding Frost, I guess when you’ve used up your “blame Mike Riley” excuses, hoodies are next?
Didn’t Gebbia leave Nebraska because he was beaten out by Martinez? Martinez is injury prone, I would think that Gebbia had to have known that. I’d like to think that Frost being an asshole also helped Gebbia make the decision.
Yes. Frost wanted a true runner at QB. He was a true frosh so no data on the injury susceptibility. Frosty the Cornman is running the original Kelly offense, pre Mariotta, so the QB is taking a lot of shots. I think he hurt his off shoulder yesterday with a end zone dive. Frost is supposed to be smart but he sounds like a dumb hick in his pressers.
Here is an interesting article that sums up Scott Frost through 21 games. Riley was actually 5 games better. The author is not buying into the blame Riley narrative.
Listened to the game when cell service permitted on the trip home. Gotta give credit where it’s due. Sounded like the offense was clicking on all cylinders for most of the game. Even gotta give credit to Luton. Only 6 incompletions???
When was the last time OSU had two backs go over 100 yards in the same game? Ward and Woods vs ASU in Simple Jack’s last season as the HC is my guess?
Defense is still a work in progress but holding UA to those FG’s early was huge.
Sorry Angry but UW is beatable. Not saying they will but they aren’t world beaters this year and this game is ripe for the taking. Which Beavs team shows up?
4-4 to start November? Pretty sad but,I’ll take it right now. 6 wins and a bowl game is still on the table.
turning point of the game (I’m not trying to be funny) was the Beavs taking the ball against the “revamped” Zona defense and just driving down the field. That had to have every Zona defender question everything Cecil told his guys after putting in the new defensive scheme.
Welll thats a great question on the double backs going over 100. JJ and AP have been close against Cal Poly and Southern Utah. Nall and AP were close against Oregon in 2016. The last time we had two PLAYERS go over 100 was California in 2016 (Nall and Darell Garretson). Seth Collins and Storm Woods did it in 2015 against San Jose. Bernard and Rodgers pulled it off against Maryland in 2007.
The answer surprised me but it shouldn’t have. In 2000 in a close win against UCLA Ken Simonton ran for 100 yards and Patrick McCall had 146 yards.
Moral of the story is you might want to save that one on the DVR cause this seems to only happen every 20 years or so.
The P-12 Network announcers said it was in 2016 during the game, but in their usual stellar fashion, they didn’t mention who the players were! Thanks for the research.
As much as it pains me to say, I don’t see Nike losing another game. They just seem like a team of destiny right now and the PAC-12 is super down this year. Oregon is the most talented team by far in the conference and the disparity in talent between USC and Oregon has never been wider, amazing as that sounds. I predicted uo losing 2-3 games this season. Whatever they’re doing to lure in the Nations top recruits is working. They don’t have the best coaching staff, but they have the best recruiters and that is all that matters in today’s college football. I was hoping they’d come back down to earth, but I don’t see uo losing another game this season. Oh well.
At this point, I don’t care if they don’t lose another game as long as they don’t make the playoffs. I assume you’re not saying they will win the natty?
I was hoping for one more regular-season Duck loss just to shut up the Quack fans and the local media, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen, so we will have to put up with the playoff-hype for a few more weeks.
Of course, it would be amazing for The Beavs to shut up that Quack fantasy also!
I still think Utah will wipe the floor with them. Even if you look at Washington as the reference team Utah won that game, Oregon pulled off a damn miracle. USC is Utahs loss but SC barely won and still had Matt Fink tearing them apart with Pitman. P12 Champ game should be a real grinder!
Listened to radio broadcast & watched ~twenty minutes of compiled highlights.
Thoughts:
It’s been mentioned indirectly by a few ppl, but one big factor haven’t seen until this point is that more players stepped up. Out of 20 completions, 8 different ppl were targeted. And when starting personnel were taken off the field, their replacements continued the drive.
Overall, an ugly win. A number of positive firsts, that the announcers had to take time during broadcast go back through time to dig up the equivalents (2013? 2014?). That’s a good sign for the program.
e.g. One not mentioned. When is the last time we had TE even be an active unit in passing attack in more than two games in a season? Hopefully that trend continues when the opportunity presents itself.
Re: QB. Through 8 games and last couple of seasons, rather neutral personally. He’s ok. I’m not as hard as others with position coaching decisions regarding personnel. Is Gebbia better ultimately? I think you can make a strong case he is. Would we be at the same, or better record if he had been plugged in since the beginning? I don’t think the arguments made thus far carry as much validity.
Arizona looked to be a fast team on offense. I thought D managed to stay disciplined in their assignments for most of the game, whereas in the past they had trouble doing this. Errors this game seemed to be in penalty sustained drives, & missed/broken tackles.
Even if they lose the rest of their games, the Beavs now have a team that is at least watchable IMO (that is improvement). That can’t be denied.
Last time TE was relevant was probably Noah’s freshman year or Conner Hamlet.
Some of the wideouts look like they are starting to feel more comfortable. After a terrible week at Cal Irish came in with something to prove, his cutback was beautiful and gave us another 35 yards on that drive. Lindsay is legit, I think with a QB that makes more reads he will be a serious weapon, he looks dangerous when the ball is in his hands. Noah had a vintage game, looked really good.
There was some big things that happened for sure. First time we had two backs over 100 yards since 2000. Rashed is now the single season sack leader in OSU history and solo at 13th on the PAC 12 all time list (record is a tie at 19, hes on pace for about 16 which would make him top 3). Hodgins has another huge performance.
I agree on the defense. With the bend but don’t break and youth/low talent they are playing well. JJ Taylor is extremely difficult to bring down and I think some bad habits came out with frustration. Well see if the tackling cleans up again. Big thing on the D is even when the first guy misses there usually isn’t a 2nd guy, the 2nd guy is often 2 or 3 guys. On one of taylors 6 yard swing passes he made the first guy miss and literally got tackled by 4 guys. Thats really good to see.
Happy with Hamelcar, but someone from the D-line needs to get at least a couple of sacks given the number of opportunities. I saw on multiple occasions Grant Gunnell get hurried or pressured but he was able to break free and turn a sack into a 5 yard gain — the linemen get to him and most likely kill a couple of the scoring drives.
The other thing was the refs’ bad calls. Luckily the bad calls evened out over the course of the game, but early on in the third quarter Arizona got lucky and kept drives and momentum going. Thought each team’s offense benefited from this and inflated the scores by about 10 pts each. Score should have been 46-28, given the horrible penalties.
Overall, the defense is serviceable but has a tone of work to do on passing coverage and pressure, and but I’ll trade TDs for FGs all day with a bend dont break D.
I didn’t think it was an ugly win.
We dominated about 85% of the game, and our D is super thin. Plus it’s an away game vs two good QBs instead of backups.
Other than Luton melting down for most of the 3rd quarter and the D getting gassed because of that, that was a consistent performance.
The roughing the passers back to back were incredibly bad. Facemasks were all legit for sure. Always hard to say with the pass interference these days.
First game of the year where Kipper didn’t get flagged. He missed a bunch of blocks but didn’t get a penalty!
It was ugly on the defensive side. They did the job but there was so many missed tackles and some dumb penalties (jojo forest had a really dumb late hit and also a super whiff that led to a td for example). I get that it wasn’t a super easy matchup but with cleaner play and better tackling that game would have been a complete blowout even with Lutons quarter break. After the great tackling at Cal it was bit jarring to see wiffs and shoulder tackles all of a sudden.
I had the D giving up 31. They gave up 38. Seems very reasonable to me giving how much the offense scored (D was out there quickly), Luton’s 3rd quarter meltdown (D was out there quickly), and the poor calls (as someone mentioned those did cost them 7 points). Every team I watch misses tackles. That’s not unique to OSU. And they caused enough disruption and were around the ball to make me say they played as expected. Our depth is terrible, so given all of it, I think we played fine. Biggest thing for me was beating starting QBs.
I get it and agree they played well and win the game. Just saying it wasn’t purty. I think them taking in two legit p12 starters and an NFL back and winning is a defining moment. Im gonna go ahead and call it the turn of the corner. Winning isn’t a fluke now.
They still gave up over 500 yards. Sure, there are some tempo factors in play, but we wouldn’t have won that game with only an average offensive performance or against an average defense.
As a team, good for us being able to beat a team with good QB’s playing. We also happened to be playing a horrible defense. Next challenge: beating a good defense AND a good QB. They’ll get their chance on Friday.
I can see where saying it was an ugly win might come across as not a charitable way to describe the game, given the factors ppl mention. I guess I characterized this game as that, because now I have some hope or expectation to see “better play?” in near future.
Find the similarities funny between our homecoming game and Arizona’s:
1) Arizona recognized Tomey, Beavs recognized Erickson
2) Arizona wore their old school “Desert Swarm” uniforms, Beavs wore their old school Benny Beaver.
3) old fashioned beat down by away team. I know Utah’s was worse, but….
First!
Any disastrous game day injury reports or are we mostly healthy this week?
No Shemar Smith, per Eggers.
Still haven’t heard anything new on JJ or Bradford.
Sounds like Bradford, Jefferson, tago, and eldridge are going to play. That’s a lot of reinforcement. If we can contain the run and wreak some havoc I think they win. This new coordinator might be coming after Luton hard today.
Games going great, no turnovers or mistakes yet.
Pac-12 network announcers pick osu
Jj will not redshirt. Nice run!
Looks to be hitting the hole quickly without the previous tendency to analyze the blocking.
#GoBeavs
Great play. Great throw. Great catch. Touchdown!
Great start! Line is playing well so far. Luton looks to have taken a lil off that pass to flemings and hodgins.
Defense will be the key today
Oh shit! Moore and Speights murdered that gap! Call 911!
Safeties are making too many of the tackles
Yeah linebackers keep getting caught up on the blocks
Damn, double roll up. That’s really not great to see
Nice to escape with just a FG. Was that a good stop or did we get lucky?
I’m gonna say good stop. Our guys are tackling well and the line is in contain on Tate. If the plan is to contain the run and force them to win with Tate’s arm I think we just saw how the game will go.
From that first Arizona drive I think they are in for a long day. Our guys are attacking the ball pretty well and those tackles have some umph. If Arizona keeps trying to grind us down it’s gonna be frustrating for them. That drive was scripted and they still struggled to get 3.
Good Lord. Where is Luton throwing? I know his favorite Target is the sideline but that was i.pressive commmitment
Yeah it’s a little early to throw the ball in to the stands at the first sight of pressure.
Yikes, Wilson and Moore just both forgot they had arms
Embarrassing!
That’s the second really bad tackle attempt I’ve seen from Morris.
Oops your right. Sorry Shawn
I know. Wtf!
Omar Speights is gonna have a great career if he keeps his health. Guy is incredible for a frosh.
UW up by 11 on Utah
7-6, now lets see if Lindgren uses AP and JJ a little more than last series.
Bend but don’t break (that much) defense. Need to score on this next drive to keep pace.
I think the bend but don’t break style works great with our personal. Out coverage guys aren’t good enough for aggressive styles. Just keep it infront of you and make the tackle. We’re pretty solid inside the 10 lately.
Agreed, but it only works against inconsistent QB’s. The best ones chew it up.
Yeah, it’s a good move with our talent though. Maybe if the guys coming in next year up the secondary play we can get more complex.
GoBeavs
OSU defense is improving…not giving up on plays…
How the Fu….JJ is a magic man
Quarter 1 – offense looks fine if it gets that first first down. Defense doing decent if you look at it as bend but don’t break.
Biggest news: Kipper with no penalties!
Horse collar tackle on Lindsey?
Lots of empty seats
It’s Halloween weekend… I think it’s just people dressed as empty seats. Quiet people…
A thought while watching UW-Utah: The P12 used to be known as a high-scoring, pass-first conference. This year, the three best teams are physical teams with good defenses that probably run better than they pass. And Stanford isn’t one of them!
Interesting style shift.
Lindsey should be Hodgins replacement.
He has #1 WR ability.
He does look good.
Togiai with a great block.
When we catches the ball. Doesn’t have the same range as hodgins being much shorter. Luton would overthrow him too often. Super fast though.
Love the end around misdirection. Need to do that more to open up the middle.
Good to see run game up the middle working even when the defense knows it’s coming.
With a more accurate qb that makes more than 1 read he could light it up
He’s just a sophomore this year right? Too lazy to look it up.
Correct
AZ Dance/Pom squad makes me proud to be an American
An alive male…
Sure is hot in Arizona…
Or a lipstick lesbian!
Ha I like the call putting Hodgins in but he has to block somebody.
Maybe they just got our of the way. 300 lb fullback would make me run off. Good thing Munchie is a magician
He had two choices. He picked neither. Munch handled it.
Looked like defense of last year
He didn’t tho.
Rodriguez kicking off this week…did Choker leave the team?
Kicking overall looks better I’m questioning Smiths personnel decisions…
To his credit, he made the changes. I can’t remember us having a coach who’s made a change like that when the status quo wasn’t good enough.
That’s one way to look at it.
Two BS PI calls
That last one was a beautiful soccer flop.
Refs getting awfully involved..
Need to pound them with the run.
Yup, get them 8 in the box so Luton can get 10-15 seconds on play action
These long throws down the field are not working out. A wasted down
It’s really not Luton’s strength.
O looks good
AZ has a bad D.
Keep running it down their throat. Maybe the d coordinator wasn’t the problem.
Absolutely! Go at least 2/3 rush for the rest of the game.
That’s a hyperextension for sure. Prob out for the game
Then a pretty hard hit on the turf when he landed.
I saw his knee crown straight into the turf…owwww
Who
Hodgins
Time for tyon to show he can be more than a #2 today
Too early to say a win, but if we get to 4 the rest of the schedule is house money. 4 had to be the minimum. Shame Smith cost us early wins we could be at 6-2 if we finish this game.
He’s learning though. Getting cleaner every week. I was happy at two wins this season. Gonna have actual expectations next year.
That was a terrible roughing call but a face mask makeup call
Fucking bullshit. What is this MLS?
That roughing call was a travesty.
These penalties are a fucking joke.
one was a legit penalty, but the roughing penalties will keep happening because the Arizona QB gets an Emmy for best actor as a stunt devil.
I was JUST thinking how I barely remember any facemask calls lately. Bad timing.
Maybe we used to see a lot more because Quiz and James were so short, and that makes it more common.
Is their qb wearing a red vest? Wtf is this
The next 5 minutes could determine the game. AZ gets the ball to start the 2nd half, can’t let them start the half only 2 down.
Lindgren playcalling is nice, screen to Noah.
Agreed. Flee flicker was unnecessary though.
Except too much time to get the TD……….heh, heh.
Now is the D too gassed to keep AZ from scoring?
Well…both their TDS had 25 yds+ of penalties. I don’t think gas is the problem
Sure no gas problem for Ham!
Morris is sucking.
5 min drive for TD now….
Tongiai TRUCKED that kid on the screen lol
Love watching Togiai run after the catch, he just runs right over dudes
Hell of a cutback by Irish there. 3rd and 7 conversion!
I peed a bit on that cutback
I am really liking our smash mouth run attack and play calling by lindgren. This offense is fun to watch. Defense needs to quit getting penalties and get a stop.
If we can get a 3 and out we have a shot at 300 yds in the half
Irish had a sick move after the catch. Pierce being himself, that drive looked easy minus the flee flicker.
How Bout them Beavers!
Ok, now someone square up on Taylor, form tackle, plant him…
Beavs run O is so superior to their run D.
Just do that and mix in a few passes. AZ halftime adjustments should be interesting. 11 in the box?
Come on defense. Too much cushion and no pressure until this sack.
Games are won/lost at the end of the 2nd and start of the 3rd. Hamilcar!
Rasheed at 10.5 or 11 sacks depending on how they count that one. 12 is the record.
Where’s the illegal hands to the face by the offense on that sack?!? Call it both ways refs!!
Seriously. Damn near jammed his whole hand into his facemask.
Oh shit crackers. Make that 11.5 or 12!
Boo birds out in AZ
Hamilcar, wow. Will not be stopped.
Also, AMAZING name.
Unleash the beast: 9!
When is the last time we could get pressure with 4 dudes? Defense is so improved. I watched the colorado win replay from last year and it’s hard to even compare.
Togiai can catch the ball?!? Where has he been his whole career?
Ha that was an ugly pass.
That was great use of tempo though. Their D didn’t even get set
He’s really starting to remind me if Ziggy Ansah.
Interior pressure is helping too. Cuts down ham having to run a huge loop when the qb has to move around. Better angles for the outside guys this year.
It’s always been tough to stop the great generals of Carthage.
Yeah, particularly with the elephants.
You Had him as a 5 star along with Pierce
Oh nice.
That’s some straight New England Patriots shit right there. Hot damn.
JS channelling Chip Kelly.
Riley would have taken 2 knees and slunk in to the locker room.
When he made it to the locker room he’d ask someone to check to see if he could cash in his unused TO’s for a new toaster……or bike.
A big run will do that on a drive
so true. Riley would have run out the clock at that point. I like to think JS is asking WWDD (what would Dennis do?)
Ok the beavs may actually be good
Wow that was some bad pass D
They’re all so worried about 17.
Togia has hands!
AZ DB’s committed to Hodgins and left Noah free on that TD. Their new d-coord reads the papers!
They broke out old AZ un is for Cecil….not working so far.
For OSU, those UH and Stanford losses really hurting now…
True. But, we might be good. Legit good. and Legit good makes more of the remaining games winnable.
Maybe a shot at the Silver Bowl, or Blockbuster Bowl, or, dare I say, Bluebonnet Bowl?
Probably just the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl
Hey I’d take the Potato bowl at this point.
Lets not get ahead of ourselves, but no matter the bowl, the extra practices would not be wasted!
Cheez it bowl baby! I’ll take it
I’d be happy with literally any bowl.
I got it as about 380 yds and 5 TDS in the first half. 150ish rushing yds.
Smith doing great clock management. Play calling and tempos really fantastic.
Ham tied with Bill Swancutt for #2 on season sacks (11.5) and half a sack from the record.
Shit we might even see Gebbia if things keep going like this.
Enjoy BeaverGopher!
Gotta wonder if BG actually made it to the game.
In da house
Utah just got raped by the refs. That was a TD
Hamilcar going to have plenty of opportunities for more sacks in the next 30 minutes. Here comes the record…
#9!
Utah will beat UW
ASU is winnable; in fact, I think if the weather goes our way it’s a lock!
You can only hope to contain the Oregon State Beavers!!
This beav oline coach seems legit. Line has gotten better all year.
True, and both coordinators are fine in my book!
Mahalichek(sp?) was with DE in the Fiesta Bowl years. Seems like his coaching abilities hasn’t changed. So glad to have him as our online coach again. That’s a big difference the last 2 years.
protection on some of those early possessions in the first half was the best I can remember for an OSU line.
Seeing the kinds of OL we’ve been offering since he joined, I generally had a positive vibe.
Who was the guy that predicted a beav blowout?
I took them +6.5 in cbs but didn’t see this coming.
Were we overestimating UA’s offense or our defense?
I had 44-17 with a missed xp
Interesting how they go with Jermar in the redzone vs AP. Makes sense though with Jermar as a more power back vs finesse runner like AP. AP the ultimate team player today allowing Jermar to get the rushing TD’s.
JJ has better cutting ability makes sense.
AP more speed.
AP seems to me, is harder to bring down. But more speed for sure.
Maybe I’m hallucinating, but I’m still waiting to see a teammate help JJ off the turf.
He almost always waves hands off when offered. Some guys like to have an angry edge and he seems to be one. Lynch used to so that shit too.
Blown tackle by McCarten, doesn’t happen very often.
Atleast Taylor is legit hard to tackle.
Channeling Dennis Erickson- let the unnecessary roughness flags fly. Establish yourself as a bad mo fo.
Only if you’re a top 5 team
Freshman CBs are the baddest mofos lol
JoJo keeps giving them free yards. and A missed tackle on the big touchdown play.
Arizona winning best actress Oscars in this one.
Frosh, whatcha going to do.
Who is #36? He’s so slooooow!!
Keith Pankey Jr.
Sleights is way better already than Pankey ever was
Oh ok that’s speights? Makes sense why he was out of position.
Okay sheeeit lets just score 50
Bad tackling on that TD come on dudes
That big 99 showed up big on that drive. Terrible miscommunication on that sack.
First sack of Luton for the day.
EDIT: Ron Callan reports Luton into the medical tent after the sack.
Speights. He’s actually awesome. Took a bad angle on that wideout. Lb and #2 wideout is never a good speed matchup
Okay this shit just got serious. Better wake the hell up.
Is aydon hurt?
Might be strategically held out to keep lighter quicker guys on the field to account for the QB run.
Nope, made a tackle on the AZ TD drive.
Momentum shift in the stadium. Need a three and out.
There’s still time for you to GET OUT OF THE STADIUM!
LOL
Pass D sucks
Doesn’t help when Hamilcar is the only player getting a pass rush.
There have been a few missed tackles. Looks like we could use Elu Aydon on these running plays.
We have no idea what to do with a big lead. Don’t Coug it!
This is the most tedious 17 point lead I can remember.
Two missed tackles on that. Good grief!!!
Nice fucking tackling!
Bizarre call to go for it there. Clearly they don’t have much faith in their defense.
Needed three scores.
There’s a lot of time left, though
Or ours
NOBODY is allowed to play defense until they do 2 straight weeks of open field tackling drills. This is ridiculous.
Still going bowling? Lol.
We’ll be lucky to escape this.
Beavs letting down as the opponent makes adjustments…yet again.
They need a TD this drive
Well that didn’t happen
Luton is playing headshy, what is that all about? He had like 1.5 seconds to make a play there and just collapsed to the ground instead.
Bradford wide open to the left for a dump off. He goes all Vaz standing fetal instead.
I’m gonna lay most of that on the OC. Is there really a reason to get all pass happy all of the sudden?
Yup
Rodriguez Heisman campaign still alive
In my opinion that Lavaka ‘hold’ was not a hold. It was a very athletic play.
Ok, that was more impressive by Lavaka because his arm wasn’t stretched out grabbing jersey. He had the middle of the chest and was holding the defender off with one hand
Agree. He was benching him with one hand. I can see how it would look like one to the ref tho. Not often u c someone able to do that.
Maybe on Tonga? That is impressive as hell. Glad you guys pointed it out I miss d that.
Luton being Luton as the pressure mounts.
Terrible play calling, too. We run for a 1st then let the deer throw into headlights?
He’s just not good
He’s average. Not sure why more people can’t grasp that.
He’s okay until the game matters. Then he has a Kafkaesque moment and morphs into a deer. A slow deer.
Metamorphosis or hunger artist…hmmmm
Anybody know a witch doctor?
Tackling is shit
#3 Grant really has room to improve!
(How’s that for “glass half full”?)
Utah beats UW on the road 33-28. Next week is not looking good.
Two snaps with 15 and 25 secs. That’s got to stop.
Luton being Luton.
The deer being the deer.
Not everyone can be the goat
Hodgins knee is gonna hurt for the next few days, stud keeps playing very well.
EDIT: No complaints on Luton’s TD pass to Hodgins.
Ya, Luton is average throwing to a wide open hodgins.
Nice job by Hodgins.
An average P12 QB can do some nice things against one of the worst defenses in the country.
It’s a throw you’d expect from a backup level QB. WR gets wide open and he throws it within a 5 yard radius, letting the NFL talent take over and do his thing.
That applies to both teams today.
Hodgins made #2 eat a dick with that move. Ouch.
That move may be patented under revised NCAA rules?
Whole new opportunity for players to make cash with the new rules
Great play calling
How clutch is Hayes? That’s 7 XP’s in one game. When’s the last time we saw that?
Golden foot baby
he’s automatic. haven’t seen that since Serna post LSU
Still no FG attempts
I do like the Smith tends to stay aggressive with a lead in the 4Q. Riley would have handed if off 3 times and punted 3 possessions in a row by now.
How many times did we see him get a 10 point lead in Q4 with a big smile on his face chomping his gum then go right into the fetal position.
Just as much as we saw play action on 3rd and long
Ah, the old days; 3rd and 12 and a pass for 6 yds!
63
Is Washington up next?
I watched some of that game and they got really beat up.
Utah is violent man
If you couldn’t drink you’d be pissed off as well.
Fortunately we don’t have to experience that BG.
Yes.
Washington still looks like a good team. They’ve lost close to some better teams, but Eason is pretty accurate and I expect him to pick our D apart. He was forcing a lot of throws later against Utah because he didn’t really have any other options.
They got banged up. WRs looked very hobbled. Peterson made some coaching errors, too, especially with time management.
I still think they win by 15 but I was thinking 24+.
Yes, Friday night game at home against Washington.
Smith is not happy with the defense or refs right now.
Noticed Serna on the sideline near smith. Wonder if he is more involved in coaching, maybe with special teams???!
McCarten blocked by the zebra!
Fucking ref with the pick play.
I feel bad for Taylor. He’s a great back. He can add trucking both safeties on one play to his draft tape. He even blocks really well. Their whole offense is just him going nuts.
He reminds me of Ka’Deem Carey. That guy ran like a psycho.
Thats a fantastic comparison. Murder on the mind.
He’s a fucking pygmy like Quizz. He’s lucky these guys haven’t decided to just rip his head off every time they feel facemask. They’re gonna draw the flag anyway, make him earn it.
How was that not a PI by Dunn? Never looked back, hands all over the receiver.
Also, holy CRAP can someone get ahold of that QB? Like 5 times the pocket has collapsed and Mannion 2.0 has gotten away somehow. Hit him!
Arizona’s frosh QB is good.
Yeah he’s gonna be trouble. He’s clutch AF
Yep he has “it”
Maybe he wants to transfer lol
He looks way better than Tate at this point.
Poor guy. Sumlin will be gone in another year and Arizona will hire some another retread.
Just when people started to wonder if Tibs didn’t suck
I think the scheme was good. The players are missing tackles and breaking down fundamentals.
Yeah, defensive players have definitely improved skills-wise this year. But still, guys need to learn to TACKLE.
Tibs don’t suck!
Best DC we have had in awhile.
Not a high bar there!
I was thinking about that…whos better Banker, or Banker…or Banker?
schematically I thought the D was set up well, but the tackling in open field was below par for the season as a whole. I think “Call me Mr. Tibbs” gets that cleaned up.
McCartan showing good fundamentals leaving the ball alone on the inside.
Lindsey looking like James Rodgers
I really like Lindsey.
The NE transfers are all game changers.
We should have a chance to add some more this offseason. Nebraska is the gift that just keeps giving!
Who?
At least one WR so far. It’s Frosty, so I’m sure there will be more as their season continues to run off the tracks.
Totally agree.
3 straight pac-12 road wins. Called it at the beginning of the season.
Don’t have Pac-12 network since I cut cord. What’s up with all the defensive penalties we are taking. Legit penalties or hating officials?
Officials have been pretty shit.
The Roughing the Passer penalties were bogus.
The Facemasks were legit. Apparently their RB is like 4′ tall, and nobody knows how to tackle him.
A little of both.
Thanks. Sounds like a good win outside of giving away over 100 yards in penalties.
Reminds me of the golden days lolol. I swear Ericksons team must have had atleast one game where we had more penalty yards than offense.
Mostly hating officials. There were about 3 legit penalties. How was there no holding on that play either?!? The Arizona player was literally laying on top of our defender like he was a WWE wrestler looking for the 3 count pin!
Pretty much horseshit top to bottom.
There was a holding no call right in front of the red on that play. That was more of a hold than Lavaka’s hold.
Ham with the record!!! 12.5 on the season!
Called it!
The Homecoming Wreckers Tour 2 for 2 this year
Back down to earth next week, sadly
3 for 3
UCLA, Cal, AZ
That was a good win.
Pretty much dominated except the 3rd quarter.
Enjoy beavos I’m out for the night.
Anyone else notice AP leave the field after the last play in which he was involved? Looked hobbled.
Yeah he didn’t look like he was feeling good. Walked on his own power though.
Luton with another shitty performance. Put in Gebbia.
Welcome back Rev, been missing your input.
Lolol no comments for two weeks when he played good defenses and sucked eggs.
I’ve been gone a month. Thought I was permanently banned. I did miss you guys though. Angry, can we at least agree that Luton is a serviceable starting QB in the Pac 12? Not the best but not the worst either.
Everyone say it with me: “Luton is an average QB.”
Luton played pretty well today, and I’ve been as critical of him as anyone on this site. His principal improvement is that he’s not allowing himself to get into a six consecutive bad possessions in a row syndrome. Of late he’s limited it to one quarter, not a whole half.
A big part of that is play calling. Lind I recognizing it and calling runs and simple passes when he’s rattled.
As I said in the pregame writeup: “We’re about due for the “good Luton” to show up, too (i.e. bad D).”
Average is a step up from what most of you have been giving him credit for so don’t be so snarky partner.
Now, to finish the day…………FIGHT ON!
Trojans score first in LA
Game Stats and Observations Summary:
Plus, it’s a road conference win, Again, and we’re once ESA-listed for the Beavers.
Good observations! Also I would note far too many penalties.
Go Rubbers! PAC-12 officials already crap in this game too.
I have been neural on the whole Luton debate but with that being said he does get those deer in the headlights moments in games and it cost us against Hawaii and Stanford. The last 2 games he has had the same issues in the 2nd half but he has been able to shake himself and finish both games strong. That is growth and should build his confidence down the stretch this season.
spot on. he’s learned to limit the damage.
Quacks about to be exposed as the fraud that they are down at USC.
Yeah lets play UTAH again!!! oh wait..
The D is better, but we did allow 500+ tonight.
We were historically bad last year. This year, we’re just bad.
This
And keep in mind that the Beav defense has not shown much propensity for creating turnovers yet.
If we win 3 of 4, but beat Phil, and WSU beats Stanford, we’ll still win the North.
Actually not. We have to win out.
Not likely.
Yeah ducks would need a second loss in that scenerio
Easy guy. Keep those expectations under control. You might get your heart broken.
“Hearts and bones were made for breakin”
Tom Russell, Buckin’ Horse Moon
If beaver fans have hearts left to break they haven’t been paying attention for a decade
that’s funny
As the ducks get exposed at USC. The Beavs will still be in charge of their own destiny for PAC 12 North title going into second week of November. A casual observer can’t fault that improvement Hope the trend continues.
Wow USC’s Slovis is good. I can’t believe this guy was QB3 at the start of the year. He’s only 18 and already better than Congress-eligible Luton.
We’ll be in first place if USC can keep this up.
Edit: forgot Phil hasn’t most in conference yet

Arizona forum. Sounds like us last year
A victory haiku
We all love Coach J
Maybe Jake Luton is good?
We hate Oregon
Sweaty Beaver! Be careful…saying anything good about Luton could get you in hot water! (but nice haiku)
USC making the ducks look like they are ranked 7th
Helton’s a bad coach. Bad game management and discipline are calling them.
They have like ten starters injured
Cristobal’s approach/goal is to build both lines and to be able win in the 4th quarter….
Can we just stay on topic that the beavers won today and are .500 this late in a season.
Indeed! We must celebrate!!! More wins this year than in the last two! Tied for our best record since 2014! The future is bright!
And we have Everett Hayes!
The next great. Pretty sure Serna have him a foot five for luck before the game
Foot Five?
Damn, the humor never ends………especially after a WIN!!
So that’s what it feels like to leave a visiting stadium a winner.
Or see the beavers win in person. Is the curse broken?
Yes. The curse has been exorcised.
No projectile vomiting required…
Your combined teams are 12 and 4. Tell me, what is that like?
I could get used to it.
Hope you had a great time! Looks like a great place to watch the Beavers win.
there’s nothing better than returning from a road victory, savoring it all the way home
Especially on ^^^your yacht.
see any good deals down there? I understand the yacht market is depressed in Zona
The defense drove me nuts today, but Pierce/Jefferson came through yet again. Luton looked good for the most part, too!
One good thing about Oregon winning is that give it gives the more deserving team in the south (Utah) a chance to beat them in the conference title game.
Or us…hahahaha
Ducks are kicking SC’s ass.
USC has done plenty to hurt themselves, but the refs in that game have been BAD.
No flag.
…cheap shots, trash talk, late hits, head to head hits on a regular basis.
Spot on!
SC is kicking their own ass quite a bit too.
Slovis has made a lot of freshman mistakes. He’s going to be a star, though; he’s made some incredible plays.
Is it okay to go to the titty bar if my wife isn’t going to find out?
It’s ok with me….don’t tell my wife I said that.
Can’t get enough of the beavers?
I think you are on the wrong blog
Take your wife with you dummy!
Depending on its quality, your visit could be worse than it better than “ok.” If you’re in Tucson, you should easily do better than ok…
If he’s going to come in from La Pine there’s one option and rumor is not great.
I’ll keep her busy.
You have a good explanation for the glitter all over your fsce and clothes?
Cause you’ll need one
And the smell of smoke and cheap perfume
4 games left, #9 ought to get at least 4 more sacks…
I could see wins v. ASU and @ WSU.
Those are the wins I have circled as well.
^^^^
byu throttling utah state,
I caught some of the game. Anderpants looked defeated to me on the sideline when BYU went up two touchdowns. Not much emotion. What’s up with his nose? Noticeably Rudolphesque in the cold Logan weather.
Combination of cheap Scotch and Thunderbird
Nice to see Scott Frost is in a tailspin at Nebraska. Lost in a late score to Purdie, which was playing with their backup QB.
Wisconsin up next, followed by Maryland and Iowa. They may only have a shot a one other win this year and fans are starting to turn on him
Doesn’t help when he shows up to a press conference and tells the reporters his team is soft for showing up to the Minnesota game wearing hoodies during warmups. All while he’s wearing a hoodie during the press conference.
What a bunch of pussies for wanting to be warm during warmups.
https://twitter.com/AndrewWardKLKN/status/1188269708958720000?s=19
Unbelievable. Lol
He is having trouble with his own qb. Seems to be having trouble seeing the field.
It was the backup to the backup. Starter got hurt a few weeks ago.
Starter played against Purdue, right? He didn’t look good.
Martinez played qb against Purdue. I do not know where he is on the depth chart
Purdue was down to their 3rd string QB.
How is the brother in law doing? Not suicidal I hope. What does he think of frost now?
well, if Nebraska is on the OSU post-Riley timetable things should start turn around about 2023
Here is an interesting article that sums up Scott Frost through 21 games. Riley was actually 5 games better. The author is not buying into the blame Riley narrative.
https://saturdaytradition.com/nebraska-football/lets-call-what-is-scott-frost-failure-so-far-2019/
Wow! Another road win!
Np, i do like those numbers haha. Good thing it was 2000! I Sports Reference book stops there and I would have had to really try.
I don’t think they’d beat Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, or Oklahoma.
USC still has more talent than Oregon, they just have injuries and bad coaching working against them.
There was also the issue of some questionable calls extending drives in the third to Az’s benefit. Probably worth 7 points.
The roughing the passers back to back were incredibly bad. Facemasks were all legit for sure. Always hard to say with the pass interference these days.
First game of the year where Kipper didn’t get flagged. He missed a bunch of blocks but didn’t get a penalty!
Exactly, I thought the bad calls evened out over the course of the game, but inflating each team’s point total by about 10 points each.
Don’t forget that a few missed kicks and conversions helped our D our, too.
I can see where saying it was an ugly win might come across as not a charitable way to describe the game, given the factors ppl mention. I guess I characterized this game as that, because now I have some hope or expectation to see “better play?” in near future.
Whereas before I didn’t at all.
What goes around comes around.
It is interesting to me that all of niners Pac-12 Winn’s are on the road. Very different from the last coach
