Washington State @ Oregon State (Game Thread!)

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but….game thread!

Almost one year. Good job getting through the drought, guys. Let’s hope we can last a few more hours and get this game in. We all need a fix.

With regard to the game, I’m saying Jefferson has a big game with 150 yards, 2TDs. Gebbia 3TDs (I’m saying 2 in the air and 1 rushing). Defense gets a few turnovers.

35-28 Beavs.

  1. Man, Stanford is really missing something (aside from 3 FG’s!) Starting QB is out so they should be establishing the run. Instead they’re running shotgun, often empty backfield sets and leaning on their unimpressive backup QB.

This game should be way closer than it is.

  2. Already feeling good about this season. In years past this Baylor vs. Iowa State game would have gone to 3OTs and we’d have missed the first quarter.

  3. “Let’s go Beavers!!!” (Clap! clap! clap! Clap! clap!)

“ Clap! clap! clap! Let’s go Beavers!!!” (Clap! clap! clap! Clap! clap!)

  4. Just starting the game up! Angry congrads keeping the blog alive through the worst off-season ever. Donations pending next good month I have!

  5. Hawai’i guy here;

Don’t sleep on the WSU QB. VERY talented. Think OKSTATE or Auburn QB. Maybe not that level, but of the same style.

He was a blast to watch in HS.

    • He’s getting 1 or 2 spy every play now. Watch the lb when he starts to run vertically. It’s a good call until it stops working then back to 5 man rush.

  6. Bradford body catch on the TD. Gonna cost us a lot this season.

Great running by Jefferson and Gebbia completed some decent short passes at least.

  7. First half recap

    The good:
    JJ
Taylor looking like the guy we thought he was going to be
    That one scoring drive
Lightbourn saving points with his kick on the missed snap

    The bad:
    Secondary
    OL
    Gebbia’s arm strength
Arnold (aside from his nice ST tackle)

    The ugly:
    Colletto
    Kipper

  8. On the plus side, OldBeav, I mastered Blackbird (Beatles) during the first half. It’s nice to do something while watching the game so it’s not a total waste.

  9. Bad first half for the coaching staff. Cougs look like the team with coaching staff continuity not us. Both lines are trash. Game plan coming in should have been to feed Munchie and he got 1 touch on the first series. Need to adjust and come out and squeeze a win in what should have been a blowout.

      • No one said it. But This should be a blowout if we are to be a good team. Also the line flipped based on all the money on the Beavs. I got in at +3 and +135

      • C’mon, should have been a marginal blowout based on factors discussed here; then add in the absence of Max B. Vegas doesn’t focus on Beavs, last I saw was Beavs -3………but so what?

        • Exactly. Gebbia playing like hot garbage and our o line getting no push.. Lindgren calling a terrible game.. I’d go with Nolan here to see what we have. We are being out coached right now though.

  10. It’s important to temper refs probably took a TD away on the chop block where Kipper hit the dude in the chest first. So this game could have been tied at half. Also the targeting call that was reversed even though it was clear targeting stalled another drive. In a first game situation those calls are huge. None of this absolves the staff for sucking and Beavs for coming out lethargic.

  11. Who had Taylor and Beason as our top wr? Wheres Lindsay? Bradford body catching and dropping balls? Irish? Stewart?

    Something crazy is happening

  12. We’re awful. Colleto and Flemings have zero business being on the field. Getting on Smith about it now. No way you can watch weeks of practice and think those are your best options…inexcusable personnel problems.

  13. What a joke. Bring in Nolan. And now a tipped punt. Sure we can bring back Gary andetpants as he’s available. He might be able to be QB coach. Lol

  14. I’m not sure if this team sucks or not because for some reason Smith is playing guys who should be 4th string. It would be a lot easier to figure out if they truly suck if he had the best guys on the field.

  15. No sign of David Morris!?!?! I thought he was good to go. He was a game changer his freshman year. Is it to early to say what might have been if not for injuries…

  16. Is it just me or does this feel the same start to the season that we’ve had the last 15 years? Before the season we get excited, we got good talent, good coaches, and we’re going to do great things this year. Then the season starts and we get slapped in the face with a wet bag of shit.

  17. Okay seriously we must have a shitload of guys sitting out for covid. There’s no way kolby taylor should be are #1. He’s a situation dude with good hands. Why is colletto playing at all? Have we seen Hugh’s murray yet? Our wideouts are Taylor, Beason and Flemings?!?! This is impossible.

  18. Damn, that drive looked decent, except for Musgrave tripping up. But that play call for JJ was spot on. Looked like something the ducks would do (hate to say that) Completely caught the D off guard, and let your best player go 1 on 1 and go make a play. As I post this, Petros saying classic Beav play, praising Riley like play call….yuk

  19. Heading into the 4th quarter and we’re still in this. Defense needs a TO. That qb with the big hands needs to get stripped while scrambling.

    • Do east coasters get FS1? If you like great freshman qb performance and big hands this is a dream game. I’m getting Matt Barkley PTSD. True Freshman!!!

  20. Omar Speights, Hamilcar Rashed, David Morris, and some more have all been quiet on d. We get some guy named Oladapo getting a sack!?!?! I expected more from this defense.

Still a splinter of hope, but dammit, it’s just nice to be watching the beavs play football!! Let’s all soak that one in. 4 or 5 months ago, not a chance. GO BEAVS!!

  22. 1
    2

If we kick the pat we are down 10. Wazzu scores a td and we are down 17. They score a field goal
We are down 13. We go for 2 and get it we are either down 16 or 12. Still need 2 scores. Basically not getting the 2 points is the same as kicking a pat if they score a touchdown here. So I guess roll the dice hoping you set yourself up better to score twice?

Watching the Trump/Gulianni back-alley press conference might be a little less awkward….

I really thought the coaching staff continuity would benefit the Beavers in the league games. I was wrong.

  24. Who am I missing from players mia. Lindsay, Irish, Gould, Morris, McCartan, Tago, Stewart, Bennet, Skelton, Julian, Tyler, Fisher, Forest, Taumalau, Leaning, Rawls (????), Stover, Garcia (11th year senior), Shippen, Skelton, Anderson? Wtf is going on here.

  25. We get an important stop, and it doesn’t matter because Smith went for 2. Now we need two TDs in five minutes. Just…wow. Announcers laughed at him. Reminds me of Urban Meyer laughing at Riley.

  26. I live near campus. At least with covid I won’t have to endure the long line of traffic on my street as reser empties all wondering why they drove hours to watch a game they could have coached better.

  27. Best of luck boys. Wife is sending me to bed because my immune system is too weak to stay up tell midnight watching the beavers lose again. Shes right but what a damn duck.

  28. Can OSU just suspend football for 5 years, try to purge the loser mindset? Start fresh?

Its been 20 years since a real meaningful bowl victory.

If they kick it, they have about 30 seconds. If they get an onside kick, they could have maybe one or two shots at the endzone.

Either way, they have to get an onside kick.

Fucked up by freezing their kicker with that final timeout.

  29. Wasn’t impressed with Tibs on year 1.they Def made some ground in year 2 but still wasn’t on the Tibs band wagon. Still not sure what Tibs is doing. Seems like a regression in year 3 after 1 game.

      • It’s the body of work. Tackling hasn’t gotten better. Not sure why they played the 3rd and 4th string DBs and LBs for significant minutes. The 3 man “rush” was a terrible decision for 3 1/2 quarters. Tibs should be on a hot seat.

    • 2
      1

Tibs went from historically bad (without much to work with) in year one to just shitty in year two and now still shitty in year three.

    What…the…f…..is the plan there?
If you’re going to bother with a FG there, you better be ready to not waste a timeout. And waste a TO, the FG is pointless. None of that made any sense.

Glad to have football to kill my Saturday evenings though. I’ll take it

  31. Bradford is so inconsistent, made some decent catches and some rotten effort. But didja see him on the play late where Jermar just needed Bradford to get out of the way (much less throw a block)? On that play Bradford looked like a disinterested observer, not a full time team player.

    • He can’t afford that. This is his last audition. If he’s uncommitted, better to just train and try to put up good combine numbers.

I think he’s serious about wanting to contribute, so either something was off, and WSU had an experienced tackle(s) blocking him. Its R&S, so the passes were likely coming out quickly, no?

    • I don’t always buy the “I’ve bulked up without losing any speed line” line, but Wazzu’s o-line looked good. They smothered him several times. He left his feet on one play totally faked by the QB.

  32. I saw one good play on defense. The blitz that got the sack. That was I think the only hit on the qb in the game.

Just overall, too soft coverage. Wsu qb wasn’t going to be throwing in tight windows that accurately. Poor tackling technique. No push from d line. Not much creativity in defensive calling.

Gebbia played well enough. Really picked it up in the second half. But really need to utilize jefferson more early on. Dude can be a monster, let him make plays.

That was a shit show on defense with a lot of odd no shows. Is Anderpants sitting in some whorehouse in Nevada now sticking needles in a Beaver voodoo doll?

  34. Getting Out coached was the biggest thing for me. Tibs is garbage. Honestly because of the way it went down. This is a loss that changes my opinion of this entire staff.

  35. 3
    1

    Big takeaways for me:

    1. Gebbia is legit. The slow start was concerning, but he looked like himself onward.
    2. Smith is a huge in-game liability. He has no concept of basic probabilities, order of operations, or personnel.
    3. Nice to see some old names back on AB.

Smith might be better off as an assistant. He has some ability recruiting and scheming, but he has no idea how to manage a game.

Even though the defense was below average statistically last year, they had energy and enthusiasm. There was something weird going on out there tonight. The missed tackles, clueless coverages, odd line-ups in the game, and no leadership was disconcerting. In the end, it’s on Tibesar.

    • PAC12 may not broadcast any FB this time around. Only chance is one of the planned week 7 “cross division” games, nothing in the first 6 weeks is on PAC12………you know, PAC12 the media company which pays Larry Scott millions and simply MUST have offices in high rent San Fran.

Can The Beavs ever start a freshmen QB with no experience who torches an opponent before I die or is that not possible? It seems like every other fucking major college program can at one time or another!

  37. This game was lost in the first quarter and a half. The offense had WAY too many three and outs, and that completely gassed the defense. Could not generate a pass rush from halftime on.

Going forward, I hope to see a heavier rush attack in the first quarter. It’s imperative that the offense gets 2-3 first downs on each drive, even if they don’t result in points. I think there is enough personnel on the team to be able to run various I-form’s and 2-back sets.

    • Missing Jordan Whittley is a huge loss, as well. Defense desperately needs interior lineman. LB’s cannot generate a consistent interior rush.

  38. Penn State, 0-3 after losing to Maryland.

“Consider that the Lions entered this game dominating the series like no other over the decades, winning 40 times, losing twice and tying once. The Lions won the past three meetings by a combined, 163-6.

And they were favored by nearly four touchdowns on Saturday.”

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/bigten/2020/11/07/penn-state-loses-maryland-sending-nittany-lions-new-low/6209523002/

Looks like coaching changes can be expected at Penn State and Michigan by season’s end.

  39. The autopsy:
Wazzu was the better prepared and coached team. Beavs sleepwalking in the 1st half.
D line concerns coming in proved to be legit. They got their ass kicked.
Biggest disappointment was the LB play. Should be a good to elite unit, but the tackling was terrible. D line play played a part.
Second biggest was O line play in the first half.
Play calling was not good in the first half. Gebbia seemed more comfortable in a hurry up mode. Why did they not try that in the 1st half?

Last two weeks, Minnesota has the worst D in CFB. Now my Beavs take the title. Luck O da Rodents!

  40. I hope we get some answers on personal this week. Wtf was up with the receiving core? Lindsay, Irish and Stewart should be in before Flemings and a true frosh.

DLine? Did anyone see Skelton, Bennet, Anderson or Shippen?

LB? No Tago? Why was Coletto in the whole first half?

I would like list of who’s out of shape, who’s hurt and who’s sitting out so I can expect to lose in an informed manner.

  41. Good morning, everyone. After a good night’s sleep (how ’bout yours Nuke?) I went back thru the thread and have these few shots:

    1) I was the one who said de Laura looks like Kyler Murray an hour and half before Petros said it.
    2) like Angry said, it was good to see a few of the old names, especially Scotty, back in the fold.
    3) BeeG, better late than never, wraps things up with his compelling analysis.
    4) and the one you’ve waited for, Angry, Smith’s decision to go for two the first time made no sense; it doesn’t show up on the “when to go for two points chart” that I saw. Let’s face it; the guy’s a gambler and on balance, when you don’t have the cards you go big on the bluff. And we don’t have the cards. that said, since he made it up with the second “2” the decision netted out even

  42. I read an article in the Seattle Times this morning. Wazzu was missing 32 players for the game. Did the Fox announcers ever bring that up? The article gave no specifics as to why.

    • Smith’s answer: “we decided going in we were going to go for two in the 4th quarter.”

That answer is unacceptable. Serious Bush League stuff.

      • I’m starting to think Smith is a closet 8 man high school football coach who onside kicks every time, never punts, and always go for two.

      • Going for 2 that first time was much lower odds of success overall in odds of winning the game. It required an assumption defense could not prevent a TD on the following drive and after another TD by WSU, Oregon State would then score two more unanswered TDs with time running out and then manage to convert on two more 2 point conversion for 3 conversions in a row to force OT. What were odds of all that happening. Not more than 1 in 500. Bad call.

  43. Appreciated summary & different takes on game.

I was looking at stats from this outing — if offense can improve any, can we [hopefully] expect some high scoring games?

The personnel packages also seemed quite confusing? Maybe some potential answers will emerge this week.

  44. Well that was just…ughhh

The good – Gebbia and Jefferson. Gebbia really turned it on the in the second half and hopefully the coaches realize how special Jefferson can be when you get him the ball. Though over usage concerns for JJ are there from the past. Gebbia also had the best punt of the night. No turnovers either but each did fumble once.

The bad – made the WSU qb look much better than he was. Really any kind of pressure and he started to scramble. But there was only a handful of those time. If they flushed him to his non throwing side, he didn’t do much. Special teams had a bad game. Bad snap caused an easy score for WSU and then another bad punt earlier that was under 25 yards. Missed FG wasn’t that big of a deal but doesn’t give me much confidence in the kicking game. Onside kick was also not good but recovering those is just luck anyway.

The ugly – The defensive line/pass rush and DBs. Basically zero pressure. DBs played extremely soft in coverage. The WSU QB wasn’t going to beat them over the top very often. 50/50 it would be a pick. Tackling was also an issue. Wright in particular. Lots of arm tackle attempts.

I didn’t have the sound on so I have no idea how many players were missing or injured or whatever else.

A very bad start to the year. Missing players is an excuse not a reason for a loss. WSU was missing their best RB who certainly would have racked up 200+ yards.

Now the season is just hope based. Hope the offense can play like they did in the first half, like they did in the second half. Hope special teams can clean up their issues. Defense needs divine intervention. Tibs is vey much on the hot seat.

  45. My report card
Dline-F we have a fcs dline.
    Outside linebackers- B-
Inside linebackers- starters B. Colletto and Doug T- F
Db- C nothing horrible, but needs works. Arnold is a liability right now, although he is going to be really good.

    Oline D
Receivers- D- absolutely no playmaking in game 1
Tight ends- C talented, but missed a lot of open catch’s
Running backs- B+ Jefferson is a stud, Bj seemed solid as a backup
Qb- D I like gebbia a lot, but legit was way way outgunned by a 3* true freshman. I feel bad for even saying it, but I would give chance Nolan another look. With the weak oline it seems like some running threat would help a lot

    • Weird that he and Sean Connery both die the same week, thinking back to all of the Celebrity Jeopardy bits they had on SNL featuring those 2

  46. Game observations:
*Beavers were not ready to play in the first 1/4. Completely flat.
*O-line has not gelled yet but will get better as the season goes on.
*With all this talk of depth on defense, coaches over subbed. Pick the best 11 and play them 85% of the time unless TOP a real issue. Spieghts and Roberts shouldn’t come off the field. Good defense’s play the starters.
*Defense had no communication and constantly out of position like the beginning of 2019 and all of 2018.
*Jefferson is the best back in the league.
*Shitty decision with QB making 1st ever start to drop everyone back in coverage and let them run the ball. They should have blitzed from all angles and made him uncomfortable and force bad decisions.
*Beason is good, Flemmings is not.
*Where were jet sweeps, bubble screens, two TE sets, the full-back, deep balls. We were so vanilla until the last 20 minutes of the game when in an up-tempo style. Need to keep defenses guessing.
*Got outcoached bad last night. Sometimes over thought things. Sometimes didn’t think at all.

    • Agree with most of this. To me, it was another one of those Beaver openers where the team looked timid and like they were unsure if they were any good or if they would be competitive at all. WSU played hard and we never really matched their energy. This is a young an inexperienced team in challenging circumstances, but WSU was able to get their kids focused and ready to compete and were clearly not there yet.

As others have noted, the continued unevenness and inconsistency with in-game decisions and coaching philosophy is what has me concerned the most. There is a clear pattern emerging on that front.

    • I didn’t watch it, so appreciate people’s observations.

But the thing that gets me, is this is not Smith’s first season as HC, but sounds like they performed as if it was in both in-game coaching decisions and players’ play (dropped passes, missed tackles, etc.).

    • 3 for 7 on third downs, 10 for 18 overall, 6.4 avg. 1 sack. truly now, who’d have thunk that Luton would ever start in the NFL? He did something neither Canfield nor Mannion ever did. Joins DA and Moore as the old Beav QB’s to start in The League in the modern era.

  47. Beav alumni making good plays in the NFL. Former Beav football theatre – the Cooks catch and touchdown in response to Luton’s td pass. I stopped paying attention to the game last night when the announcers started coaching the Beavs. That is usually a bad sign. Remember Ed Ray ‘they’ll need to bring their A-game.” Will F. King be as patient? Cougs qb had swagger even before he took the field. Gebbia appeared nervous .

  48. So I just read this thread and people were complaining about players on the field Nd saying they weren’t seeing certain guys when they were actually playing a ton. I agree with angry on flemings that he shouldn’t be a starter or even returner. Some said Beason shouldn’t be playing but he played the best of any receiver during camp. Taylor IMO is a solid wr.

Morris played in the 4th and looked like an idiot giving up a 50 yard run for a td.

Julian and rezjohn played a lot. Wright probably would’ve of picked the pass if grant didn’t but tackled poorly.

Rawls, speights, Robert’s, murray, mccartan all played a lot so idk why people were saying different.

Colleto was said to be the biggest and fastest ILB for what that’s worth.

Was Oladipo in for Arnold maybe? He had a sack and I didn’t really see him mess up.

Gebbia sucked at first but pulled it together. The O line needs to protect better. He kind of had happy feet.

Too many dropped balls and missed tackles.

Hopefully since this offense is unique they will match up better with other teams.

Oh and grant seemed really upset and hurt by the loss which is nice to see.

  49. OT – the Seachickens have a historically bad defense. Oh how the mighty have fallen. I think the SB talk can end for a while until the play some D.

Poyer celebrating a nice Buffalo win…
