Ducks Fly North for Civil War Showdown

36

I know I know, “Angry, who cares about the baseball team?”

The only reason I’m writing anything about this series is because it’s the Civil War, and that always has meaning. Also, during this absurdly long losing streak there came a time when I thought nothing would snap it except a series versus Oregon. Why?

Because this is human nature. When people feel down, in a rut, with little to live for, they tend to do things in day to day life to keep that cycle continuing. They’ll stay up late, sleep late, pull the blinds down and block out the sun. You know, depressing things. Until they’ve had enough and step outside. Usually, in the real world, at that point something good happens (like the depressed person finds a great job, a beautiful lady, etc) and his spirit is renewed. In the world of athletics, the options of what can bring a team out of a cyclical rut are much more limited. But a rivalry game is definitely one of them. The competitive spirit in these games is naturally high, and couple that with the Beavers dominance in the sport and you can understand their fear in passing the torch to the Ducks–they may never get it back.

Does all this apprehension and energy translate into wins?

I actually think it does. I think the Beavs take two of three in this series (*if* they win game 1), which won’t be enough to ignite post-season discussions, but it might be the spark that triggers an inferno down the stretch.

  1. With 16 games left we win one. 15 to go, and I reserve the right to be disappointed in the outcome of this series… still.

Tomorrow’s game is on TV for those who care.

  2. You know, that wasn’t championship baseball, but the beavs showed some heart. I still think our pitching sucks – Ducks hit the ball on the nose quite a few times only to have a beav standing at the other end of the rope. But I’ll take it. The fellas didn’t pack it in when UO came back in the ninth like I thought they would.

  3. I left my computer after the lead off doubled and I figured the Beavs would pack it in.

On a completely unrelated note; just booked my trip to see the TCU game. Hope to see some of you there, even if my expectations are low.

  4. The Ducks are ranked #15 in the nation, 12th most difficult schedule, and have a 30rpi. A sweep would be impressive. It’s strange…I feel the better team has not won the first two games. The Beavs haven’t had timely hitting but they have had timely pitching–giving up a ton of base runners but getting key outs. Very odd way to win.

    • I stopped watching when Jennette came in for Jones in the 9th. I figured we’d win, and I wouldn’t miss anything. Or we would lose, and I wouldn’t want to see it.

It turns out we win, and I didn’t want to see it.

    • And I think the better team has won both games thus far. The Beavs have finally been playing their game while the Ducks look like they’re trying not to lose. If they’re not careful, the Ducks could find themselves spiraling.

      Then again… probably not.

    • Thanks Beavgirl, could have easily eaten crow. Two wins (minimum) is simply what psychology & human nature would suggest so I went with it.

  5. We need this win. That means Gaviglio will give up 13 runs in 2/3 of an inning and we’ll lose 13-7.

    Right?

Angry, I’m not normally into women’s hoops, but yesterday’s GT story really angered me. Are you gonna write something on it.

    • I didn’t read it. What’s it say?

I only follow the three main men’s sports. Nothing else really interests me.

“We need this win. That means Gaviglio will give up 13 runs in 2/3 of an inning and we’ll lose 13-7.”

      EXACTLY.

Actually, I’m cautiously optimistic about this game today. I think we need 6 runs to win it, but the law of averages has to play into our favor at some point. It’s been 3 weeks since we scored six runs.

    • Ah, I can’t say I think much of it.

Sounds like they hired a coach with good credentials who is a bad person and treating players poorly, so said players are leaving. Maybe the AD didn’t do due diligence and just went on reputation when hiring her. I know Beaver fans loved this hire at the time.

As far as how to handle it…I think the fact that her behavior is out in the media/spotlight is going to make her curb it. She’ll want another job down the line, so she’ll be on good behavior. I don’t think it’s worth cutting her lose and eating that money–we can’t afford it right now. Media just needs to continually keep the light on her.

My main question/concern is do they have enough players to field a team next season?

  6. Romero just got picked off first. I went through 3 years of varsity baseball (albeit high school) without getting picked off. It’s not that hard to pay attention.

    • Yeah…it’s hard to get on Romero since he’s been hitting well with no protection. These things do happen. You’d hope a team that struggles to get base-runners would value them enough to not let it happen. On a side note: glad to see “auto-out” Miller isn’t in the lineup.

  7. Defense through six has been uncharacteristically…….not terrible. Hoping these last 3 innings go quickly so I can act like I’ve been trimming the hedge before the SO comes home.

    • Okay, Pat Casey is an idiot. 7 hits, a handful of runs, pitching the ball over the hitters head and Casey leaves him in??? 122 pitches????

Told you this game would take 6 to win.

If they lose this game it’s squarely on Casey’s atrocious coaching.

  8. Folsom making up for the UCLA loss.

The win doesn’t forgive Casey’s boneheaded coaching. My opinion and respect for his baseball acumen has been completely tarnished.

    • Boyd has been pitching great. When it’s 5-2 bring in Boyd.

      Sitton has been okay, btw.

Also, Rob Folsom in the post-game is super impressive in his articulation and analysis. I wonder if he is a communications major, because he has a future in broadcasting if he wants it.

  9. All the effort of the weekend rendered moot as the Beavs are going to lose to San Diego.

More dumb baseball. Getting throw out on a SB attempt in the first inning at 3rd base no less (of course Romero follow it with a single). Misuse of the pitchers. Carter Bell failing in the clutch. Playing at double play depth in the 8th and letting a 4th run score instead of trying to cut it off. Just…bad.

  10. I’m sure it’s coming…Beavs lose to USD, Ducks spank them.
Go home Beavs. No good wins really, almost all season long. This was a possible good win after Sweeping the Ducks. The closest thing they have I suppose to a good win.
