I don’t have much to say about the Lalich situation. The short of it is that this is a blessing in disguise. Last time I wrote a piece like this Keith Pankey’s mom showed up, and she did not share the same sentiment!
My opinion of Lalich is that he’s been both a ticking time bomb and wallflower since his arrival and was getting 2nd string reps based on pedigree (i.e. 4-star and “all the tools”) alone. Vaz has been better since day one and is a rich man’s Jonathan Smith. Additionally, it was likely that Vaz would transfer if the log jam at QB didn’t free up, so that is an added benefit. Finally, Lalich’s departure will give the much deserving bump up the depth chart to Jack Lomax. So there you have it, divine intervention did the job the coaches couldn’t do an aligned the depth chart properly.
This is, of course, assuming Riley kicks Lalich off the team. He definitely, 100% should. It’s a no-brainer. Anything less and this blog is about to blow up. Not only is Riley’s mailbox going to get flooded but the AD as well. In fact, the fact that he hasn’t been kicked off the team yet is igniting sparks of rage.

Extra Extra!
Does anyone care to discuss how this DUI further tarnishes our image and tightens the muzzle around annoying Beaver fans’ granola eating mouth? I covered both in the Olander article, but annoying Beaver fan needs to be reminded of how flawed the program is once a minute or his pupils begin to dilate orange. It’s nice to be an objective, non-annoying Beaver fan, isn’t it?
Oh, and speaking of the annoying Beaver fan, I found this quote from Oregon head coach George Horton to be everything annoying Beaver fan claims to be but precisely lacks. That is, class and respect. From Oregonlive:
Horton was not impressed with the OSU fans sitting behind the Oregon dugout on the first base side and some unsavory comments that they made when Ducks third baseman J.J. Altobelli turned his right ankle while pursuing a ground ball in the eighth inning and had to leave the game. “A couple things came out when J.J. got hurt that I didn’t like very much,” Horton said. “(Losing the series) is a tough pill to swallow, because of the energy here and some of the stuff that’s coming out of the stands, but I don’t have any animosity towards Coach Casey or their athletes. Like I’ve said before, there’s room for both of us in Omaha.”
Way to show your true colors and cheer on an injury. Godspeed, ever-classy, annoying Beaver fan.
RE: Lalich
No loss of sleep over Lalich here. It’s tough to keep young guys( Mannion, Vax, et al) happy buried in a depth chart. PL is a net zero – not better than anyone else on the depth chart, and no upside with eligibility (this year and next). No impact, and a good chance for Riley to “make an example” as acedemic as it is.
RE: “Extra, Extra”
Heckling the opposing team’s players = acceptable
Booing the opposing team when they take the field = acceptable
Cheering a kid getting injured? Bush-league bullshit. C’mon guys…you morons are the same idiots who spew “elite” this, and “back-to-back” that…let’s act like we’ve “been there” then, eh?
The one thing that beaver fans lack is the ability to win and lose with a little freaking dignity.
I agree…Horton is the classiest thing in Eugene.
The problem with the (UO injury) hecklers: the same people will go to Duck forums and boast and post “best family atmosphere” and “classiest program” links. These people are the paragon for why we’re a “3rd tier” academic institution–they have factory-worker IQs.
3rd tier my ass! OSU is one of the top ten research universities in the world in terms of peer review. And I’m talking hard sciences, not ‘entrepreneurial studies’.
But some people do have to populate the back of the bell curve.
I’ve not run into Horton yet. I hear good things about him though. But I think Lananna is still tops in this town.
“3rd tier my ass!”
It was a reference to the US News Rankings, which I have acknowledged are flawed, but it’s the perception nonetheless.
But do you really think OSU holds up in prestige to the California schools or Washington? OSU, ASU, and WSU simply don’t have tough admissions. Oregon and Arizona are in between. It’s why I always scratch my head when there’s talk of expansion and academic requirements of the universities being considered.
I realize OSU has a ton of research. I was involved in it and do scientific research for a living.
People who develop their perception from US News in the wake of the payola scandal are deficient in the requisite skills for developing an accurate perception.
I have a lot of respect for the University of California system. Stanford and USC emulate Ivy League schools in that getting into the schools is much harder than graduating once you’re enrolled. I honestly haven’t heard much about UW even though many of my own relatives have attended through the years. I hear they have a high rate of research and a good pre-med program, but that’s about it. I see much more tangible research emanating from Wazzu and its extension campuses.
Then there are the Oregon schools. Their missions were divided in the early 1930’s. So UO got the liberal arts, and Oregon State got the real sciences. I believe they could be better as a whole, but they provide that which is necessary for the population they serve.
I worry that the OUS might be pointing OIT away from science and engineering and too much toward health sciences. The development of a strong technology institute is important in terms of the OUS’s advancements to be had through shared resources and research. I think others have had the same concerns. And the answer has been that the recent push to upgrade the health sciences department is only one facet of priority upgrades for the university as a whole.
Having OIT in the OUS gives Oregon State a considerable advantage in the sciences when compared to other regional universities, and the further development of that institution will be vital in future studies.
Every university has students who are less than desirable in an academic sense. Universities who tout high entrance standards have legacies and monied ‘interests’ which allow these students to populate their ranks. The standards for academic achievement should not be entrance or exit matriculation rates and requirements. They should be the real and tangible results.
Peer review and reference are the best standards for tracking the validity of research. The scientific method itself demands that results be repeated before they are considered valid. So why would we ignore the standards set by the whole general field of science?
So I heartily scoff at perception derived from a list derived from payola.
This does not mean that I think no stupid person now attends or has ever attended OSU. That clearly is untrue, and it’s proven every day on this blog and others. It just means that the top notch students who attend and create the real results mandated from a research institution do so at a very very high level as compared to all other research institutions worldwide.
I agree with all of this.
But the US Rankings are the first thing that comes up when people google “best schools” etc. And they list us as 3rd tier. I did 3 blogs on the topic already–it’s a flawed because it can be, like everything else, manipulated with money. But, take a look at the top 50 and try to make an argument against those universities. That’s the problem.
That being said, since (difficulty of) admissions (specifically, SAT scores) is the first thing the average person looks at when judging a school’s merit, I’d like to see OSU cut some fat off the lower 25th percentile (and below). Is a 470 verbal and 490 math really acceptable when compared against the Cal system and Washington? The other schools are all very similar, but OSU is still the lowest (by about 10 points in both verbal and math) than every other school in the conference. As someone who takes pride in academics, I want the school to demand higher scores and be respectable, so when the average person hears the name Oregon State they think “good school/tough to get into.” Sorry, that’s the truth. Maybe it makes me a dick? Maybe I should have went to a school that already has that reputation? Valid on both.
SATs are not an end-all. Plenty of people do poorly on them for various reasons (anxiety of the timer, biased questions or reading paragraphs, etc). But I think you can allow those people entrance and an opportunity while still cutting off the true fat (like the guy above who wrote “sole”) and everyone wins and everyone finds their true place in the world–another word in this direction and it’ll border on political philosophy (i.e. human rights, equality, etc) so I’ll end here.
Angry, when you realize YOU are the most annoying, embarrassing, and pathetic excuse for a Beaver Fan, the world will be a better place.
It’s one thing to take of the orange colored glasses again, it’s another to be a complete ass 24/7 such as yourself. Your blog is an embarrassment to OSU and OSU fans everywhere!
BTW…nice link to Horton’s comments. That guy himself isn’t exactly a class act. Considering no members of the UO or OSU media who sat along the first baseline have backed up his claim. It’s nothing more then a bitter Horton for getting swept!
FWIW… Lalich has to go!
Why is my blog an embarrassment to OSU?
You made a statement and didn’t back it up in the least. That is weak sauce, mate.
Reading between the lines, I sense your rage and even the cause. You’re upset that people read this blog and take it seriously. It’s a reflection of your own failures and a threat to “the cause”…I get it, mate.
At least try to back your statement up next time, or repeat it 3 times; I hear then it comes true.
Why is your blog an embarrassment to OSU? If I have to answer that for you, you are far dumber then I imagined. You do nothing more then bash OSU, the coaches, the programs, the players, etc. Being cynical as you claim is one thing. You are out right pathetic in your constant bashing! The sad thing is, occasionally you have a good point or an argument that I agree with it. Your approach to that arguement is what is embarrassing to OSU and the fan base.
It’s one thing to have an open debate about a certain player’s abliity, the coaches decision on a player, or how each program is run. However, you constitantly put a very negative and rude spin on it (see Pankey’s injury or Ryan Allen leaving). And you act all high and mighty as if you have better football knowledge then Riley, Banker, etc etc.. You aren’t at practice, you aren’t at most of the games. You’re just a sad lil guy hiding behind his blog.
Anyone taking this webiste seriously needs to do some serious sole searching! And I am in no way shape or form your ‘mate’!
I really hope no potential recruits stumble upon this pathetic site. Imgaine an 18yr kid researching where he wants to go to to school and this site comes up in his search.
Reading between your lines, it is very obvious you are not an OSU fan. You may have went to school there, but actions speak louder then words. And your blog is a clear indication that you are NOT a fan.
“Anyone taking this webiste seriously needs to do some serious sole searching!”
Because they maybe stepped in gum, and it’s why they’re stuck hanging out here? Nice one!
The word is soul, my friend. It’s a homonym. A word that sounds the same, but is in fact spelled differently.
I don’t act high and mighty…comments like that scream of jealousy and resentment. That is a you problem. And that you know about all my past posts means, by deduction, you read them. So your masochism speaks volumes about yourself as well, or you simply realize deep down there’s truth in what I write. Good luck with your cognitive dissonance.
Props to you for calling out my spelling error, then going on to commit a few yourself. Awesome work!
I already told some of things you say I agree with it, do you lack basic reading comphrension? The embarrassing part is how you go about your arguments.
I find it humorous how you want to paint me as having issues I need to deal with. Yet you are the one with a Blog dedicated to constantly slamming OSU and it’s athletes, coaches, and programs. Anyone who took a Pysc 101 class can tell you have some serious issues in your life. The sooner you seak help, the sooner you’ll start to feel better.
What you see as “slamming” I see as constructive criticism or the truth.
I feel like Michael Moore all the sudden.
Let me guess, you think he hates the United States?
;)
“Good luck with your cognitive dissonance.”
hahaha
“Asked if he was fearful of what Riley might do, Lalich paused and finally said, “I don’t know.’’”
Translation: “No, but after Riley kicks me off the team I’d like to transfer and play DII football this year so I better do something smart for once and bite my tongue.”
Horton’s comments after EVERY loss was essentially “a tip of the hat” to the Beavers. . for getting the job done. I’ve not ever detected any of the other condescending “attitude” so common w/other ucks. . .
Just after he was hired I contacted Dan Hicks, former Beav NCAA Wrestling Champion, to ask his opinion of Horton. Dan said “a stand up guy” . . . “supportive of the other sports at Fullerton”, etc. Of course the Football program had long been gone, and their programs would be considered small-ball by BCS standards. I’ve wondered – assuming uck baseball ever got established – whether George Horton would still stand up for wrestling (at uckville)? I still hope he fails professionally – at least like this past weekend – but also still believe he is an aberration for someone wearing uck colors.
For those not wrestling familiar, Dan is the head wrestling coach at Fullerton; his wife Jill – a former O.S.U. gymnast and on Jim Turpin’s staff long ago – is the head gymnastics coach at Fullerton State. (Where George Horton – multiple time NCAA College World Series Champs came from . . to uckville.)
I went to the same High School as Dan, albeit several years after him. He was still considered a legend. Dan comes from a great family – his dad (Ron) was one of my favorite HS teachers.
Im pretty sad this had to happen to Pete. He can be the best qb OSU has ever seen and Vaz aint gonna win us a rose bowl… no chance at all (even if he grows 4 inches). Plus Lomax is not good at all, and a terrible recruiting job by Riley. What do you mean he gets to move up the depth chart deservingly? His skinny legs, and weak arm are lucky to even be practicing at all.
Have you seen Vaz throw this spring? I have not so i’m curious what your basing your opinion on. I’ve read he was looking pretty good.
Yeah, because short QBs have never had any success at OSU.
Hey Angry, these are the types of ‘followers’ you have. Uneducated at OSU and the team the follow.
Maybe he’s a new fan and doesn’t know the school’s history. But to be fair, there haven’t been a *ton* of short QBs who have had success.
His observations and opinions on Lomax and Vaz are off if you ask me, so it sounds like this guy is just not all there. However, the thing about this blog is he can say that kind of stuff without having a gang of people like yourself up in arms.
PTLMOM post anything over on Rivals today? I bet there’s some good drama there.
haha
What a shame. May be needing that QB depth with the offensive line questions. I always had high hopes for Pete, and still believe his addition to the scout team in ’08 made a difference vs USC. (it was his 2nd USC game that year). And what an awful way to get a DUI. Just re-parking the house boat in a safer spot. That sucks.
I hope he can find a good D2 team to transfer to and can step right in for good playing time and make an impact. Is Portland State a possibility?
I hope that Riley helps him land a new home.
“Is Portland State a possibility?”
Don’t you get the feeling he’ll look back east? Only came to OSU because of the quarter system and didn’t seem to like the culture. So I highly doubt he goes to PSU.
I don’t think the situation makes the incident less egregious. This isn’t a case of someone passing out in their back seat to sleep one off while the keys are in his pocket. THAT sucks for a DUI. Standing or sitting at the wheel while drunk and the boat is in motion is just the wrong thing to do.
And I don’t want to hear the old standard, “But everyone does it at Shasta.” That makes this situation worse. If everyone was doing it, and Lalich and his boat were targeted, there had to be some reason their boat was singled out.
The first rule of drinking is that being loud and belligerent will always cause problems, and they will likely be of a legal nature.
I can understand where Anti-Angry is coming from, but on the other hand, I can see where you’re coming from. Anti is afraid that people may think that this is how OSU fans feel/think because if someone makes the effort to make a blog to express their thoughts about OSU in general, then they are really in tuned with OSU. I read your banter on the one guy who may not know the history of OSU; he may be able to express his thoughts and opinions, but to what end? to vent, to get what their point across? I read what you write to get another point of view because I am a life long beaver fan and you and I are opposites of each other. I have been to more OSU home games(Footblal) than you ever have, but yet I have never attended OSU. So, we offer each other a view point on the other side of the coin.
Instead of saying basically the other is ignorant or is a jacka$$, we should be looking at what could be said to change the mindset of this blog and ask the question directly: Angry, What is the purpose of this blog?
Leave it at that and await his answer and if the answer does not suffice your line or mode of thinking, then don’t revisit this site again. I read this blog also to be in SOLIDARITY with people and try to think logically, intelligently, and also to sometimes disagree and argue with angry, but in a way that does not become heated or allow emotions to become involved in my arguments.
Now, about Lalich….I saw this on the 10 o’clock news last night and I said to myself, I be Angry will have something to say about this and I also thought that he will either be kicked off the team or suspended for the season. Either way, Angry’s right that he’ll leave either way so he can try to play ball in a program as a potential starter and only play 1 year of football. He’ll either be kicked off or he’ll transfer…in a way, he and Misoli are in similar situation except Lalich can’t redshirt.
On the note of “tarnished image” depends on what Riley does. Also, if I remember, we’re not in the “National Spotlight” like the Ducks are, so this story might not be that big of news since we knew that Lalich had been in trouble with a DUI at Virginia…hence the reason he came to OSU. Turns out that he didn’t learn what his limitations are with alcohol and motorized vehicles. This is his second strike, but first strike with OSU..Virginia got rid of him, so OSU logically should too. So, I don’t think our image is tarnished for giving a guy a second chance when most schools wouldn’t. For him keeping his nose clean up until now is actually quite impressive considering his past troubles. I don’t see it as tarnished, more of a waste of scholarship and OSU’s time on the practice field for the QB’s of the future.
B4L
Good post.
Regarding: “ask the question directly: Angry, What is the purpose of this blog?”
The blog began as a reaction to my being banned on two forums because I was “too negative.” In short, the moderators felt pressure from their readers and since $ was involved I got the boot. Mainly, the readers did not want to see anything negative written about the players, but also the university as a whole. You’ll have to ask them why, but from my vantage point it seemed because (a) people from the west coast are just weird/eternal optimists, (b) since they went to OSU nothing about OSU could be wrong, since this would reflect some flaw with themselves, and (c) they found it disrespectful to parent’s of these student athletes who read said forums.
None of these have validity. If you want me to explain why I will, but think about it first so maybe I don’t have to type. My wrists tend to get sore easily (okay, I set myself up with that one).
Anyway, I was banned. But I knew there must be other people who were equally frustrated and saw that OSU does in fact do wrong. Even if there weren’t, I had to get the ideas off my chest. That’s why the blog exists. I think if zero people read it it would still exist. It’s cathartic.
Also, I feel like it’s done good. Bob D addressed the pricing issue, we sent a petition to the NCAA with a couple hundred signatures on it after James Rodgers was decapitated, and so on.
I also firmly believe that constructive criticism is how anyone, no matter the profession, gets better at their craft. Not saying that Riley reads this blog, but fans do, and the more who see the flaws of Riley and co. the more they will discuss them, they will become common knowledge, and eventually get back to Mike so he can correct. Before scoffing at this, consider that many people fear this blog because “recruits might see it.” You can’t have it both ways and have that fear while also calling the blog insignificant or saying nobody reads it.
There are plenty of things I like about OSU, some I dislike, and since most other places on the net give an overload of the former this is where you get an overload of the latter.
I’m glad you liked my post angry. I feel if people talk badly about a program or school, they have their reasons whether logical or not. The one thing I will say about this blog is this: It does not slander the name of Oregon State in the least because if anything, you could say that you bring the opposing arguments to most beaver fans that you say, “have their orange glasses on”. I also say that you mostly bring out discussions with you having the first word and allowing people to dispute it. You also bring up both sides of the argument and usually don’t say which side you’re on right away, but you see it in the article with a comment like, “see the problem here?” Lately you’ve been posting in a way that says: here’s the underlying issue and what do you the readers think about this? Is there anything to be done, what should be done if anything, and/or what is your synopsis of a particular area of Oregon State. I don’t think one blog will ruin a chance with a recruit…if it does, then it’s probably a good thing we didn’t land that recruit because if he feels that 1 blog that someone made about Oregon State in general whether the creator is for or against is someone who is a follower and not a leader. Leaders don’t care what others think. Followers want to follow in the footsteps of people and repeat what others have done and not something they want in a program and change our minds about Oregon State.
Basically, we’re like fleas on a dog, annoying, but tolerable. itchy, but not lethal. So…this is why i follow this blog cause I know that it shouldn’t sway someone one way or another, it’s merely here to vent and say what we wish to say without being in the eyes of duck flamers and people who repost 5,000 times a day. on here there are regulars and I imagine there aren’t that many…what 150 or so that are registered or something like that?
And to you I say: Godspeed, ever-classy, annoying Beaver fan.
Hey Angry,
I think the PAC-10 needs to work extra hard and try to secure the Big-12 South for expansion in the next few years or so. Our relationship with them could lead to a 20-22 team superconference in the future but it makes sense to take the South and add the Arizona schools to it for a perfect PAC-16 to match the BIG-16 that is probable. What are your thoughts? How about an article..Thanks!
Drunk boat driving is a sport in certain parts of the country. I think everyone is being a little hard on Lalich.
Nice, he is off the team.
