I'm standing by my 45-17 prediction. Simply put, the Beavers are not playing physical enough to win this game.
Katz is clearly the one bright spot.
On defense, they're playing both passive and slow. Roberson missed some key tackles. Haven't noticed the MLB too much, which is probably a good thing.
The offense isn't playing well, either. Sure, they are pass blocking, but they aren't opening any lanes for Quizz.
This game has all the makings of the 2006 game versus Boise State, including the early lead and subsequent relinquishing of said lead. What I see happening in the second half is TCU receives the kickoff, goes up 28-14, Beavs abandon the run completely, and Katz begins to throw interceptions. Watch out.
Also, where are the Johnny Hekker advocates today? I dare one to show up and talk about post-season awards. I dare one.
Defense is making mistake after mistake; just as we knew they would. I can’t even count how many coverages Roberson has just flat blown or didn’t have the speed to cut off the corner.
On three of the Dalton runs the entire line, all four of them, had run past the QB as he was standing in the backfield. I understand trying to get around blocks, but somebody stay in front of the damn QB.
Katz has been ok, he shows promise.
It’s hard to believe Roberson has played worse than Pankey.
Can we please put Phillipp in this game and try to open some running lanes??
I want to know where the McAndrews and Hekker camp are right now. It’s silent!
Yeah, wtf? Was he just lazy all fall?
“On defense, they’re playing both passive and slow.”
seriously.
Hekker is a chump…and I give you the fake punt/pass. That line-drive-25 yard-right-to-the-defender punt is the turning point in the game. As in…we should be tied.
Katz has looked good except for the first series. Although had he hit Bishop on the post route before Hekker screwed us, we’d be up a touch right now.
Please, Riley. Please. Can we burn a scholarship trying to land a top-rated punter? Please?
Un-f’ing-believable.
Our LB corp is killing us on third downs. We just cannot tackle in space, on the corners with our DE’s tied up. Four first downs should have been tackles for losses, because Roberson and Co. cannot get it done.
Yeah, the LB corp is why I predicted a huge loss.
The 15th nationally ranked punter in the 2010 Recruiting Class starts school as just a regular Beaver student on September 27th.
The only thing that can stop the genetic freak/red-headed mutant is the red-headed genetic mutant himself! Thank you, Dalton, sir red-headed mutant.
(sorry, red heads. I am just angry!).
Roberson with the INT. He still sucks.
Yeah, how about making standard tackles against the run and not grabbing INTs? I’d take that exchange.
Huge play, though.
When Katz misses, he overthrows. Still nerves?
Dirk Diggler complex–he’s still harnessing his natural gift.
Sort of reminds me of D Anderson with the rifle passes. More composed and mobile though.
Exactly. We have 3 seasons of this guy. He’s going to win us a lot of games, but a little touch on the deep ball would be nice. Our WR’s are getting behind the secondary on every play.
Seems like OSU will have to beat them with the deep ball, they are determined not to let Quizz beat them. I ‘d probably make that gamble too. Sorta like in basketball “Live by the 3, die by the 3”.
At least my wings are good!
Got to score here…
Halahuni is a stud. Wonder if he can play LB?
Great to see that big of a hole on the goal line!
Egg on my face for now.
Does anyone feel good about what we’ve seen so far though? I still think we haven’t stopped TCU once, but TCU has stopped themselves. Dalton threw two INTs right to our guys. The one play were we could have actively made an INT Mitchell had his head turned.
If TCU just runs the ball they’d be up two or three scores right now.
Beavs strategy should be crystal clear: stack the box. If you lose to Dalton throwing the ball so be it, but it’s clear all they can do is run.
Get Collins in there, too. Need more speed on the edge. Getting killed there. Banker, as is his wont, not being very creative.
Anyone else have a good buzz yet?
I still think we haven’t stopped TCU once, but TCU has stopped themselves.
You hit it on the head…but we capitalized. That’s what we have NOT done in the last couple of year. We turned both TD’s into INT’s. We are playing against a good offense. They are going to get points. We need to bring our safeties up…everything short or run. Got to plug up the flat/ends.
Sorry…turned INT’s into TD’s. I don’t even know how you’d turn a TD into an INT.
Yup.
Why the hell aren’t they, though? I still seem the same LB corp. Haven’t seen a safety in the box all night.
Why is this TCU line getting so much push? It’s 6 yards down field. Jesus.
They still don’t realize Dalton can keep the ball and carry it?!!!
Why did they open the roof ten minutes before the game, too?
So lame.
I thought the same thing….bullshit. Neutral field?
Patterson “requested” that the roof be opened and no air conditioning to have the edge/advantage. Which I feel is bush league…told my duck cousin that and he called it smart. hmmm…sounds like a homer duck to me.
OK, got to tie it up, then anything can happen. It is all on this drive. If we score, then they score, we have enough time to do something in the end.
When you have so many holes in the lineup (hekker, roberson, pankey, suiese staalsdgjhaehtawle or whatever his name is), that’s all you can ask for against a top 10 team.
I’d like to see the Beavs go for 2 if they score. Big if at this point. Go Beavs.
Not sure who this ESPN analyst is, but he’s been spot on all night. I’d take this nobody over all the big name broadcasters any time.
Agreed. Good play by play/color analyst. Better than the normal homers.
Not sure a draw on 3rd and 10 was a smart call there unless you plan to go for it on 4th.
Also, why hasn’t Katz pulled it down? Saw 3 plays now where he had 10-20 yards if he pulled it down.
we were in 4 down territory, with 3 to go at midfield…haven’t stopped them consistently all night.
OK, here we go…this is all we could ask for…down one score with the ball and plenty of clock. If we score, it’s go for two. No way can we hang in the Kansas Plan.
Funny, I was just talking to my lady about that…said they need to go for 2 if they score.
Looks like they saw the ball again angry
No they didn’t. Safety.
That’s the 10th high snap tonight.
Unbelievable.
And for a very short amount of time might I add
we could have won that game.
Oh, and no heisman talk for quizz. Can’t open with 60 yards.
My lady Beav is making me some comfort food.
I have a ton of thoughts on this game, due tomorrow.
Fella’s – sincerely here – sorry about that loss. Played well and certainly could have won. You will beat BSU, I’m am now quite confident in that. Katz was solid for his first start and by week 3, he will be even better.
Oregon would have drubbed that team. We’ve maxed out the 2 star potential…need better players, bottom line.
Pac 10, in general, did not look good this weekend. Lost all the games against quality opponents.
If anything we learned that the Run D is probably worse than we all thought. The linebackers can’t cut off corners and blow coverages. I never I thought I’d say that Pankey had a better game than Roberson.
Hekker is still a liability. Two terrible kicks when they were needed the most.
TCU is definitely not national championship caliber. We already know this after one game, the announcer trying to question this at the end of the game was laughable.
Spot on.
No lateral pursuit.
Punting game is a joke.
TCU is a solid football team though. No shame in losing to that team.
But we should not have lost.
I’d almost rather get blown out than loose winable game. We had every opportunity right up till the last possession. And Linnenkohl…one of our SOLID guys. Would have never expected that to end it.
You and I think alike. I was just saying to my Lady Beav, it’s almost worse that the game was “close”…then I reminded myself, there were two 14 point swings that TCU handed the Beavs. It wasn’t really that close. If TCU ran at the Beavs and said “stop us” it would have been a 30 point loss. That they threw was a gift that later broke our hearts.
BTW, Linnenkohl was snapping the ball high all night.
Yeah, Linnenkohl was off. I haven’t lost faith though, he’s a solid o-lineman. We are running a ton more shotgun snaps than last year.
Katz has moevao’s problems…everytime he threw deep, LM threw it on a line. If RK had lofted a few of his deep balls, the game changes. Nice to have the arm to thread it in though.
Damn, I just hate these type of games where the defense cannot stop the run. It shortens the game and the offense can never get a rhythm. Very frustrating to watch. I was critical of the dink and dunk passing game last year, but there has to be a happy medium. Katz needs to learn to find the safety valve to keep plays alive. He is definitely Andersonesque right now.
Yeah, the flat was open on several plays. Need to see the single instead of the HR on some at-bats.
That was a lame option attack, that killed us. Another 40 pt CW blowout?
Don’t the coaches know anything about adjustments at halftime? LBs and kicker suck.
Angry, you were right on many of your early season points! Our rush D is…well awful.
And Hekker did hurt us on those two kicks, food for thought though….here’s the box score from Ryan Allen’s game.
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=302472755
Allen 4 punts 33.3 yard avg and one inside the 20 and a long of 40.
Hekker 5 punts 43.4 avg and 3 inside the 20. Long of 53 And of course the pass on the fake.
Hekker struggled, but your boy Allen was worse, much worse.
I’d like a bigger body of work…could have been first game jitters or wind. Hekker is seasoned, Allen is a newb.
The Hekker vs. Allen question is moot now. We go with what we got, and what we got shifted momentum to the other team with a net one yard punt late in the first half. Not that it makes much difference, but the free kick at the end of the game was worse.
Safety Lance Mitchell -18 tackles
Safety #28 -14 tackles
Linebacker Henry- 7 tackles
No lateral pursuit was right tonight and we got decent 3rd and 6 and 3rd and 8 chances to stop them and Dalton would pick it up running. Those should be chances for punishing hits from linebackers. Safeties should not have to pick up the vast majority of the slack. Collins probably needs to be at linebacker it looks like. Not Linebacker U. right now.
Katz needs to look for checkdown when it is not there in first few seconds. A couple Quizz screens a game is a must since he needs a few steps to gain speed. Banker and the D need the most work and then Katz obviosly has to get his efficiency way up. 9 of 25 compared to Canfield’s 70% won’t cut it. I like where on the field we went for the 30 yard pass. Before that though you have to play more efficient like Arizona and keep getting first downs and moving the ball. If James would have caught that last deep ball by shielding off his defender a little we might have even won. I will be at the Louisville game and hope we win it by atleast 14 but right now I would guess it may be closer than we want. They will learn but the linebackers have to figure something and protect the outside corners on runs in conjunction with Banker and the rest of the D for us to have a shot on the Smurf Turf. Boise has pretty good speed and will play as smart and probably with less turnovers than TCU.
Very telling stat. Over 30 tackles for safeties is terrible (I mean good for the safeties but they never should have had that many opportunities). I don’t think I can recall one run play all night were the RB was met in the backfield.
The guys getting on Katz are wrong. It was the guy’s first start. He played well except for missing a few check downs and not running when he should have, but that’s not bad for start #1.
Certainly a tale of two coaches. One has principles and won’t play a player who hasn’t been to most practices. Even to the detriment of the game. Then another who makes a hostile environment to give his team the edge. I can understand playing in Miami or Phoenix in an outdoor stadium. You take what you get. But Patterson practiced in the heat of the day knowing he would have the stadium opened to outside hot muggy air. Classless. Hopefully the team will learn and improve. It is what it is. There are no mid season talent fairies ( unfortunately )
3rd and 10; Begining of 4th quarter. Down by 7 we need to drive and score.
But Katz missed seeing two checked downs to Quiz.
Then on 3-10 katz has to scramble to avoid rush. And would have if Mr Wilder McAndrews had not given up on the play. He and Johnson were man handling the D-End. And then gave up on the play for some reason. And that D-End then Sacked Katz across the field; who could have, should have, would have scrambled for it and was trying.
Come on guys, did ya hear a whistle? I’ll bet Phillips would have liked to have played that entire play. This fan would like to see Phillips starting at guard and now. We have a bye week to make it happen.
The one big thing that bugged me about Katz was not checking down to Quizz and Quizz got tired quickly for some reason. He seemed like he was tired from the heat or something. The guy above who said Patterson is a classless guy is right! All that means is that he was scared of an upset and had to swing things with the owner to get the roof opened up. Cheap move IMHO.
On another note, Can we have last years defense back please! At least they could cover the spread option! GOOD GRIEF that was driving me nuts all night! LB’s, DE’s, DT’s were ignoring Dalton and going after the running backs as though they ran oregon state’s offense or something! I mean really!? Run Defense pretty much non existent tonight. 4 guys made the defense: Paea, Mitchell, Dockery, and Pankey. Otherwise the other 7 were practically out of the plays it seemed. Hardin also had a good game after he learned his lesson about not letting his guy blow past him to get 5o yards receiving! Otherwise, very disappointed on the run offense too. you can’t run the ball with OSU’s offense, you won’t win games.
Angry, hate to admit, but you were actually right about a lot of things, but the fake punt was brilliant and how about drawing TCU offsides by audibling into the wildcat?! That was awesome!
I don’t know where you get the idea Pankey did anything all night. Three of his five ‘assists’ were because he fell backwards 10 yards downfield and landed on the player after Mitchell or Tui stopped them. His name got called on one where Mitchell made the tackle, and Pankey was dumped on top of the downed runner by the blocker he was dancing with at the time.
Tui played a good game. Hardin was better than Dockery… except for the one burn. Mitchell got burned on that play as well… and the PI play was ridiculous. TURN AROUND AND SPY THE FRICKIN’ BALL!!!!
Ellis played a nice game at RG. I’m sold.
McAndrews pretty much stunk at LT. I’m selling.
I disagree. Dockery is our best and most reliable cover corner and it is not even close in my opinion. Dockery was facing the quicker receiver and was giving him much less room.
I’m not saying Dockery played poorly. I think he played rather well. And you could make a case that the one long burn puts Dockery’s game on top in total effort.
Hardin was better in run support, and more was asked of him since it appeared part of TCU’s plan was to try and go after him.
Dockery may have been more efficient in coverage, but he disappeared in the second half run defense. Hardin’s run D on the left side was the major adjustment at halftime. Pankey was eaten alive on the left, and Hardin and Tui had to adjust to it. Once they did, the TCU run offense recognized their shift, and they went to the right.
That’s when Dockery disappeared and Roberson looked like a fool on half a dozen bad angles. But at leaast Roberson wasn’t swallowed up by blockers. When Collins and Doctor came in the game, Dockery started making some nice tacles in run support.
It was just an ugly game from the OLB positions. The Mike was a little shaky to start the game, and they (Wilson and Feti) weren’t dominant in any way. But they were solid in their positions and assignments. Wilson got caught up in too much junk, and Feti overpursued at times. But they looked much better than Roberson… the one OLB I actually saw playing in the first three quarters.
Yeah that is the trade off. Dockery is not as good at run support but his assignment is to cover the No. 1 receiver so I am not as worried about his run support so much as I am him eliminating the other teams big play threat.
Roberson didn’t play worse than Pankey. Roberson just played worse than he normally does. The Mike was platooned, and it looked like Wilson and Feti will take the job forward from here.
Pankey had 0 (that’s zero, none, zip, zilch) solo tackles. TCU ran it over and around him all first half, and he was either hugging a TE or T or sta. Dalton’s first TD run was because Pankey decided that Wilson wasn’t doing a good enough job at the Mike, so he had to run to the middle to be in front of him.
