Taken from OSU's official site, this is the scouting report on Charlotte:
Charlotte returns four starters from a team that went 19-12 last season and 9-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Alan Major is in his first year with the 49ers after spending the past nine seasons as an assistant coach at The Ohio State University. Charlotte is off to a 2-3 start this year with wins against South Carolina State and East Carolina and losses to Gardner-Webb, George Mason and Coastal Carolina. Senior Shamari Spears is leading the 49ers in scoring at 18.3 points per game. Sophomore guard Jamar Briscoe sat out last year after transferring from NC Central where he was the nation's second leading freshman scorer with 17.8 points per game. He is averaging 16.8 points per game this season for Charlotte. Junior guard Derrio Green (13.8) and sophomore forward Chris Braswell (10.6) are also averaging in double figures. Senior forward An'Juan Wilderness is the other starter and was an Atlantic 10 all-Rookie choice as a freshman.
Apparently Charlotte just lost to a team that played the 1-3-1 zone.
Coach Rob has yet to prove he can coach at the Pac-10 level. He fails to go with the hot hand. Pulls guys right as they get into a grove and has failed to make half time and in game adjustments. We need an offense that gets shots at the rim. We settle for too many perimeter shot.
I think it is a learning situation for Coach Rob. I am not calling for his head though. I don’t think a coach out there could do a better job of recruiting to Corvallis. He also seems to be a good motivator. I think we just need to ride it out and hope Coach Rob can learn to make the adjustments. Maybe in a few years pressure will come to find a new assistant or something (if things don’t improve). Coach Rob is like the exact opposite of Jay John… the only thing John could do well is the X’s and O’s.
Robinson already admitted he’s going to tinker with the lineup. At least he’s not like Riley/Banker and waits until the last game of the year…
I am not talking just line-up. Also talking substitution patterns, defense and offense. But like I said I think Robinson will learn. He has never coached a team with this kind of athleticism so it is a learning experience for him too. Plus it might be nice to delay the amount of attention he gets for a while. Sign him to another extension with a more costly buy-out for him.
The players are fine, they just need to go out and take the games by finishing and having more confidence they can expand their leads. They need to just be aggressive and go for it. Have some attitude out there! Go Beavs!!
I would say stop losing games to lesser talent and the heat will be off. The Beavs should be 3-0 with Charlotte being an acceptable loss. Watch they will probably win tonight.
Go Cornbread Maxwell!
The way I see it is this: You can recruit well the first few years your head coach, but if you can’t coach those top recruits to win “easy” OOC games…then I bet you those top recruits will notice the final record and say, ok, I don’t want to go where I won’t be coached properly to win games. Every recruit is different, but I bet you that if you don’t coach players well enough to win…you will lose recruits.
The only bad coaching I’ve seen so far were (1) not calling a TO when Haynes was caught under the basket and (2) lineup issues, which Craig is aware of and said he’s going to fix/experiment with. Rotation on the zone has been poor, but I think that’s going to be addressed in point #2.
That poor zone rotation was all Wallace. That’s why Collier came in several times in the last game. Wallace looked like he was intent on playing a match-up on the base line, but the 1-3-1 requires that the flier plays a floating position looking for help situations in the middle and being in position for the swing or skip pass to the corner. I counted at least four times he missed the corner assignment, and one of them was when he turned his back on the guy to flash the wing. The wing simply passed the ball five feet to the corner, and the guy hit it like he was an all-star.
The starting line-up should be Starks, Cunningham, Burton, Johnson and Brandt. But it won’t be. Although Haynes is best as a sixth man and a second half player, too many people think that his scoring ability requires he be on the court to start the game. He should come in for the first rotation and play the remainder of the game. He’s not a ‘game comes to him’ type of player. He’s a step in and get it done type of player. That hunger is not served by his starting role.
It’s not a slap in his face either. I think he can be our leading scorer and an all-conference player by coming off the bench. But that won’t happen. So why waste my breath?
Angry is correct in that Beavs fans are on edge due to football losing. This team has a lot of downplayed expectations, but those of us with higher expectations are justified by the level of talent present for the non-con slate.
This team needs to step on the floor knowing they’re better than their opponents in these early games. Part of that is enforced by Coach Rob’s placement of the best talent on the floor at critical times. We lost the last two games because the rotation implemented told our team that we were going to win by playing over the defense’s perimeter. We should have pounded the paint until the opposition bled out. That’s what the Ducks did to the same opponent, and they rightfully killed the lesser team.
Our talent is good enough to beat these teams, but the mentality has to be there that our talent IS going to beat them. That means we have to put our talent on the floor. I’m not going to say that Wallace and Johnson have no business on the floor in the second half, but they need to be role players spotting for the true talents on the team during crunch time.
Those two can be coached up to handle the first half with poise and effort. But they lack the killer mentality necessary to put teams away. And that’s required for the whole of the second half. Johnson shows more determination to do the right thing during that time, but he seems tired or a step slow when the real players kick it up a notch.
Starks is the killer on this team right now. He doesn’t have to start, but he has earned it in game performance. What’s important is that he is on the floor to start the second half and runs the team through crunch time. If that happens, he will likely be sitting for the end of many games due to a sizable lead. Coach Rob needs to let him direct traffic, and the other talents (Cunningham, Haynes, Brandt, Burton, Johnson, Collier) need to finish his leads.
John Wooden always told a story about one of his high school kids who was a gamer. He said the kid was terrible in practice, so he never saw the floor. One day the kid sat down and pleaded with coach to let him start for one game to try to prove himself, and he was moved enough to promise that he would do so. But he had second thoughts about his promise when he got home. His wife eventually told him that he could uphold his promise by starting the kid. but he never promised any more than that. He could always pull him after a couple minutes. The kid started and played lights out for the rest of the season.
That story was about taking a chance on a potential gamer, but it could be equally teachable in terms of loyalty. The seniors can start all of their games this year, but when they don’t game up they need to sit. Loyalty only goes so far.
The flip side is that players like Brandt and Starks will respond hugely if given the confidence of a star
… starting nod. I think anyone can see the difference between a Brandt who spots off the bench versus the one who was tearing UW’s defense to shreds last year. What’s important about getting him on the floor and feeding him on the blocks is that he’s going to miss shots and have turnovers at first. But when the rest of the team knows which way the ball bounces off the rim on any one of his shots or where his passes tend to go, they take away the lost opportunities with second chances and better positioning and movement.
It’s called teamwork, and we have shown very little other than when Starks was running down UTA.
So ean is correct in pointing to the constant mad scientist rotations. Coach Rob needs to lead by example and leave our best talent on the floor when they start to meld. Shove the ball down the opponent’s throat until they break. Don’t break yourself by constantly looking for some imaginary perfect rotation. Play your strengths, and your strengths become stronger.
The probable reason Coach Rob will (I expect) start Starks tonight is because Charlotte’s best player is a young PG similar in stature to Starks. I forget his name, but he’s listed at 5’10″… and that’s generous.
Their other good player is a 6’5″ wing who likes to shoot from outside but can’t hit with a hand in his face. The bigs on their roster play 15-20 minutes each, but there are four guys who average 35+ minutes a game.
We should be able to get the ball inside 15′ all night, and we should be able to play ping-pong if we’re missing lay-ups. This should be a huge rebound night for Burton, Brandt, Johnson and Collier. And that’s if Johnson only plays the first half. Our front line should absolutely kill this team… even playing ugly.
WHY DOES RILEY KEEP OFFERING WR’S ????
I just noticed today that OSU has offered MARVIN HALL, a sub 5’10” WR from Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, CA.
Rivals has his 40 time as 4.40 sec.
Washington has also offered him.
Is Riley trying to corner the market on middle-of-the-pack WR’s?
I just want Mike Thomas and/or Victor Blackwell and call it good for WR.
BTW, here’s video of LARRY SCOTT… the other WR OSU has offered recently:
http://nationalunderclassmen.ning.com/video/larry-scott-9-wrcb
Maybe SCOTT is being recruited as a CB since Stefan McClure coming to OSU has a 97% chance of not happening.
Starting for the Beavers against Charlotte tonight are Jared Cunningham, Joe Burton, Calvin Haynes, Omari Johnson and Devon Collier.
Anyone got a stream of the game?
here is what I found
http://atdhe.net/28118/watch-charlotte-vs-oregon-state
That link isn’t working for me… is it working for you?
Are the volleyball lines permanent this year or did they just leave them because there was a game today? I don’t like looking at those. The court would be great if it wasn’t for that..
And that giant beaver in the center.
Angry,
You think those v-ball lines will be there all year?
OSU needs to lose the cartoon beaver as a logo and put the “OS” in the center of the football field and basketball court.
Wow, packed house.
The athletic department really should consider lowering the price of tickets to $5-10 or have a buy one, get one free promotion. Tough to get folks to pony up bug bucks when the product is still an unknown.
Great, McShane.
be grateful it wasn’t Deane.
“Tough” Deane…err…Turnover more like it.
So…riddle me this…
Why in sweet Jesus lord and savior did Coach Rob take Haynes out when he was actually hot?
He blathers on so much about winning the game with the lead…well, coach, take your own advice.
(and yes, this is me bitching like I did during the USC game- maybe something good will happen)
OSU 25- Char 20
Maybe he was tired. They are playing high intensity D right now.
Beavs playing well. I loved Colliers soft touch inside.
I don’t know. Fresh Starks was awful out there…I’d rather have the tired guy making the shots out there.
Good defense= nice dunk.
Terrible officiating just then.
Good guys 27- Bad Guys 20.
Oh man…
Here comes the lean mean turnover machine Deane.
And Lathen…what the hell man. You didn’t have the numbers- retard.
Aside from Haynes the “Jay John Legacy” club need to graduate.
Huh.
I think they need to do fast break drills until they puke in practice next week.
How does a guy that’s a 76% free throw shooter last year shoot 5/12 this year?
Only at OSU, the home of the missed easy shot.
Collier is looking good so far though.
It’s early in the season I wouldn’t worry about Jared at the line he will be in the high 70’s at the end of the season
Angry,
I know you can’t stand him but McShane has had a nice game so far and made one the smarter plays I’ve seen in the game where he kept his dribble and didn’t pass to a cutting Collier like the D thought he would and hit Omari on the backdoor. He’s also shown some good hustle.
He’s one of those guys whom when he’s in the game bad things happen. All he has going for him is a big body and apparently leadership since Robinson named him a captain. As far as ball skills, he has none.
I know this is harsh, but doesnt there come a time where you play Collier and Moreland and stop giving minutes to McShane?
Not that we are anywhere near Duke but I saw a Mason Plumlee interview the other night and he had an interesting statement that the team did not figure out who could do what until well over halfway through the season. We’ll be seeing lots of players as they try to find who can do what for a while. I do agree with you in that Collier and Moreland need more minutes though so Robinson can see what they can do.
Yes, that time was three games ago. I’d rather be 1-2 with all the young guys playing then 1-2 with Deane and McShane waisting minutes on the court, there is no future in those two.
That was a really good half, and I think what we all expected coming into the season. Hopefully it continues and builds upon itself.
Yes it would be nice if they build upon that. Got to say I’m really pleasantly surprised how well Calvin shot the ball. That was 08-09 Calvin in that half not really taking forced bad shots and shooting with confidence.
Everything is coming w/in the flow of the offense which is a big reason for his shots going in. No forcing of bad shots. Finally
Collier is looking very smooth. Starks will be ok, playing hard on D, just missed some open looks. Is Brandt injured? Looks like Coach Rob benched Burton for that lazy hand off pass. Nice first half, can they get past a Charlotte run?
This is truly the team we thought we would get at the start of the year. Everyone is playing well. They’re going up and down the court and forcing turnovers and using their athleticism and quickness. Devon Collier is looking fantastic.
The playing is getting a little sloppy. let’s hope that after the break they calm down and are able to play some b-ball!
Collier is the man.
He definitely is. I hope he stays in the starting and continues show what he can do. It would be nice if after this game from now on the Beavers play consistently how they did tonight on the offensive end and get a little better defending the 3 point shot. You can see the talent this team has.
more please
I wonder why Angus did not get any play minutes
got my answer from the Oregonian…
… injured foot
Is it Saturday yet?
It’s a shame the next game isn’t on TV; tonight was exciting.
Thinking about it some more, though, I think they said Charlotte had been on the road for four games and traveled cross country for this game. They were probably pretty worn out. But hey, Beavs took care of business.
Is that it?
Are we so cynical that we can’t have an objective analyisis of our game when we win?
Lathen Wallace disappoints me. The whole game plan was designed to include him as a role player, and he failed. I ABSOLUTELY HATE saying that oneof our guys is deficient in his game. But you can’t hide in hoops. Every time Wallace came in we went to the 2-3, and he still couldn’t meet his assignments.
AAAAAAAAAAARGH!
I hate saying it, but Lathen just can’t play from here on out.
Johnson didn’t do much to solidify his position either. He has SO MUCH talent, but so little drive. He can be an all-star if he just chose that role for himself. The irony is that any moron looking at stats and not his game will likely say that he is that all-everything guy.
I still have faith in him as a baller. And I think he is key to our success for this season. But he needs to step up and play some ball for me
Wallace had a three minute stretch where he missed a three badly, was out of position and fouled the guy on that 4pt play and then drove into traffice and got tied up for a jump ball-possession Charlotte.
I thought Omari rebounded well,no? Still settling for threes though.
I am beginning to think Wallace will be irrelevant once Roberto takes the court.
I thought Johnson played a great game. I think Robinson is right in saying he’s a better defender than Tarver at the top of the zone. He’s caused a massive amount of turnovers with his length. He’s an awkward player, but surprisingly effective. He’s improved twofold since last season, when he was pretty much useless.
Yeah, you have to like 16pts/12rbs. Calvin is not going go for 27pts every game, so I hope points can come from other players. If Nelson is a lights out three point shooter like every other team in the nation seems to have then the Beavs will be in nice shape.
Agree strongly that Roberto Nelson (if he lives up to the hype) will relegate Lathen Wallace to the bench, except for garbage time.
More important, Roberto Nelson will give the Beavs the consistent outside shooting and scoring threat that they so badly need. Calvin Haynes is not going to score 27 points many more games this season (if any)….
Jackbeav,
Is Murphy still hurt, not showing much in practice? Why not give him some of Lathens minutes also? Bigger, more athletic, supposedly has a nice outside shot if he ever gets the minutes to prove it.
I wondered about Murphy, as well – checked the roster and he’s still there.
I assume angry has seen this about his favorite coach
http://blog.oregonlive.com/pac10/2010/11/oregons_nick_aliotti_oregon_st.html#incart_mce
I don’t hate Banker as much as many. That article had me speechless, though.
My biggest frustration is that he and Riley don’t play the right guy at every position, the CB technique issue, and his inability to even slow a spread, never mind stop it. I think those are everyone’s frustrations.
Random question…Coach Robinson seems to be busy with many off-court things in the 2+ years he’s had the OSU job. His BIL became president, he had a new baby, he wrote a book, there was strong speculation a year ago that he would be offered better coaching jobs. How do you think he’s done with being a coach? Have these other things raised the profile of the program among recruits?
I’ve calmed down since last night. I just think Omari has a lot more to give to this offense than just sitting on the arc. He gets away with it because Collier roams the mid-range so effectively.
Burton has to be the happiest of all the guys that Collier has arrived. There’s no way anyone can afford to double Joe or body him away from the high post as long as Devon is prowling around the short corners.
Cunningham was able to show a lot of improvement by taking his dribble inside the arc and hitting some pretty jumpers.
I think Omari has talent enough to do the same. His game should be a hybrid of Cunningham’s and Collier’s game. I get on him for his consistency and what I think he can do better. But I like his game when he’s on, and I expect more from him than he probably does from himself. I like him more for his persistence at the top of the 1-3-1. he can wreak havoc on offenses if he works on conditioning throughout the year.
Collier is going to be a star. Everyone looked better on defense and in transition when he was in the game. He is just sooooo smooth.
And I will happily be wrong about wanting Haynes to come off the bench if he starts aggressively every game. That beginning is what he usually did off the bench. If he’s in attack mode from the start, then he’s going to up his game to beyond where I thought he could go. If he sputters, maybe Nelson will be that guy.
Did anyone else see that Nelson was in the middle of every huddle last night?
And did we see the difference between other games and this one regarding movement through the high post? That should be the rule in this offense. I believe Burton and McShane had it easy because of Collier and his great spacing on offense.
I want more of the same… but better!
