Discussion: Letters of Intent (Morning)

Signing day is finally here. Feels like the second coming of Christmas, doesn't it?

*Insert lame, obligatory "I hope we don't get coal" joke* Har har har. A real knee-slapper right there.

Anyway, the official site will be posting real-time signinas LOIs filter through the fax. That link can be found here:

http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/2011-signing-day.html

I'm sure our fellow readers will post updates, too. And finally, I'll do my best to contribute, but I'll be working until about noon Pacific time so I'm unsure how active I'll be.

There you have it. Sit back and enjoy, and let us cheer the good prospects and boo the bad as they come together to form the class of 2011.

    • Oh thank God, I thought we’d lost him for sure. I guess I can put my gun away because our defense will give me something to live for….

Wait…considering this class, I still might wanna shoot myself anyway.

  1. So what potential surprises are even left? White and Dockery? I am a little worried about DT but if Massiani can show up in better shape they should have a serviceable rotation with Thompson, Frahm, Massiani, and Tuivallia. At least until some of the undersized DT prospects can add weights.

  2. Regarding the link angry put up for 2011 Beaver Signing Day Central: Does that page automatically update or do I have to keep closing and reopening it?

    TIA

  3. Thanks for the link to the live feed Jack. I don’t see many OL’s or DL’s on the board so, right now at least, I’m disappointed.

I’m thinking that they need to have the cheerleaders go past the camera every now and then just to give me SOMETHING to smile about.

  4. This is off subject, but I was talking with a co-worker about the Nebraska-Oregon State recruit battles (surpringly more than I would have thought), and we both pretty much determined that neither side has ended up winning whomever the recruit picks. We spoke about Kuli, Purify, etc…but he also mentiond David Ross? He was wondering what became of him. I don’t know. I’m dumb.

Do you guys know the result? Flunk out? Dead? What happened to Ross?

  5. So pretty much it’s just down to Dockery and White at this point right? These 2 need to be Beavers. If they get them I’m really happy with the class.

  6. One of the Rivals insiders told me we might have a 2012 commit somewhat soon, whether it be isaac Seumalo or a guy or two from DLS. The 2012 class will be better than this one, considering we started late in this class.

    • Two days ago, I was right there with you…not sure why, but I’m feeling better about these boys across the board, with a couple exceptions of course. White and Dockery would make it a better-than-usual class.

Right now, we’re also missing that gratuitous 4/5 star commit that will never play D-1 Football.

  7. Where are the DTs or am I missing something?

    Per Rivals database:

    Collins 6’ 3” 240 DE

    James 6’ 2” 220 DE

    Barnett 6’ 2” 215 ATH

    Robbins or Robins Not listed

    Henry 6’ 5” 193 Ath

    Fifita 6′ 4″ 260 DE

    Wynn 6′ 3″ 234 DE

    Gonzales 6′ 4″ 240 DL

  8. This is what I predicted…status quo signing day. No poaching either way. Pretty boring day overall. I held out a small hope we’d land a signing day surprise, but as is their wont, the staff failed to deliver. It’s a good class by OSU standards, but we needed some twists on signing day in order for this class to make us feel good, especially in comparison to some other classes around the conference. Our benchmark shouldn’t be say….the 2007 OSU class. It should be the 2011 Oregon, USC, Cal, and Washington classes, and we fail pretty miserably by those standards. It doesn’t mean we won’t be competitive, but it does mean we won’t get over the hump.

  9. The poor optimists strike out again. Their “hope list” has been whittled down to Torian White Rahmel Dockery.

Even out of those two I think we land neither.

  10. Vi Teofilo did in fact sign with ASU. That’s a real bummer since he wanted to be a Beav. His damn family got in the way, much like Moala.

  11. I noticed on the board from this link: http://www.osubeavers.com/allaccess/?media=223944
That they have Larry Scott listed as a DB, rather than a WR. BTW, there is a cute blonde that appears every once and a while too!

Also, regarding the Oklahoma recruits, they are having severe weather problems in Oklahoma which could be a reason why Zimmerman’s & Johnson’s LOI’s haven’t came in yet. Paul Buker tweeted this, he can be found as “Pnbuker” on twitter.

    • His nickname can be Underrated. He would instantly be the best all-around athlete on whatever team he joins. And I mean that seriously. I think he could work on his strength and be an Olympic decathlete if he really wanted to be one. He already jumps at an NCAA All-American level, and his speed is continually developing.

The best part about Dockery is that he is an amazing football player. His height is the only thing keeping schools from offering… that and poor academic rumors. But he’s also active in the community (in great ways), so I have to wonder about the rumors about his grades.

      • He’s one of my favorites. Been wanting him to be a Beaver for awhile. The kid is gonna be great for OSU. I don’t buy into the rumors about his grades. Just a rumor.

  12. Brandon Huffman (scout?) tweeted late last night that there was going to be a Pac 10 shocker bigger than any DeAnthony Thomas to UO/UW rumor today. Anyone have any real shockers out there?

  13. Watching the live feed is like watching a kid go to the fridge over and over. Each time he opens the door he thinks something new is magically going to have appeared. Help us baby Jesus

  14. I would suggest that we all look at the 2011 class by the positions the players play and by the needs of the program, rather than rankings or star power. If we look at this class by rankings or star power, things don’t look so bright. But remember that character, heart, work ethic, desire to win, and attitude are not determined by rankings or star power. I recommend looking here: http://cliffkirkpatrick.mvourtown.com/2011/02/02/6874/
Cliff breaks down almost every recruit and if you read what their coaches say about these recruits, it will lift your mood!
The positives of this 2011 class are; filling the needs of the program, these recruits have speed and size, many come from high school powerhouses such as (De La Salle, Corona Centennial, Folsom, and recruiting rich Texas, and Oklahoma high schools) which will help OSU’s recruiting future! They also love Oregon State University and want to play here!
I know that every year it is that same old song, but I think this year is different. OSU signed a fantastic class that is living in the shadow of what is happening to the recruiting class down south that happens to be ranked as one of the highest in the Nation. If uo signed a top 25 class instead of a top 5-10 class, I think the attitude around OSU’s recruiting class would be different. We all have a bitter taste in our mouths after the 2010 season’s outcome. 2011 is a new year and a great reason to be optimistic about the future of OSU football, and it starts with this years recruiting class!

    • I agree that this is a solid class by OSU standards. I think these guys could compete down the road with another solid class… it is frustrating that we can’t take the next step though.

      • I also agree with you EAN, that it would be great to take that next step and also sign a Top 25 class someday! While maintaining being a good person along with being a good athlete. Rome wasn’t built in one day either. This applies to every program in the Nation except for maybe oregon. With $300,000,000+ dollars being dumped into that program by a single donor can build you a Rome over(k)night!

    • Just a couple of things based on past experience.

      – Let’s not grade this class until they’re all in school. Quite often it’s the kids with the most potential that have grade problems and never make it to OSU.

      – It seems to me that one way to determine the potential of the kids is to look at who else was recruiting them. For example, if a kid’s only other offer was from St. Mary’s school of the blind then I have to think the kid doesn’t show much potential.

      • Well said MudAndSticks! We all remember the phantom Simi Kuli among others. Today is one thing, seeing who actually enrolls by fall is another.

  15. It’s my humble opinion that OSU fans like to down play the star ratings because OSU is unable to recruit the big time players on a consistant basis.

The fans keep telling themselves that stars don’t matter and just like with lies after a while they begin to believe their own bull shit.

    • Stars don’t matter to a certain point. Like say a 3 star and 4 star in some cases is virtually the same. Or in rare cases guys just aren’t noticed and don’t get highly rated. However, more times than not guys that are 4 and 5 stars are probably a lot better than 2 or 3 star recruits. If the Beavers were to get a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits they would ditch the 2 star and low 3 star guys in a heartbeat. They too often take what they can get and don’t try as hard as they can to get the big fish.

      • On average, the more highly rated players are better than the lower rated players. But in terms of gross numbers the 4/5 stars don’t outpace 3- in terms of production. If you took the top 25 football teams in the country and compiled their production (starters/contributors) in terms of ratings, it would be a lot lower than you think.

We don’t like ratings this year because they’re wrong on some of our kids. We’re getting some really good to great players this year, but you wouldn’t know it looking at the recruiting sites. In fact, this year and last year are better than 2009… which was better than 2008 by far… which was better than 2007 by far.

  16. “Hear is what I’m hearing……Moreland was supposed to sign an hour ago…not NLI to SMU yet, so that could mean bad things? My sources were still saying SMU this morning because that is what Moreland was saying. Delays usually don’t mean good things.”

Interesting. Would be awesome if he sat down to sign and then suddenly changed his mind and wanted to be a Beaver.
