Per ninersnation, Reggie Davis to the 49ers.

When Nigel Burton left, the Beavers had a great opportunity to hire an uber-recruiter. They hired Keith Heyward. Keith was a terrible recruiter his first couple cycles, but he's slowly become adequate.
Now Riley has been handed another opportunity. Does he seize it?
This hire will be very interesting…
the plot thickens. That’s too bad, I hear he’s an outstanding coach. Clearly Harbaugh thinks so too, but I guess they are rather chummy. The Quizz bit is rather intriguing too. Doesn’t he have family in the Bay Area?
Most importantly, lets get the right effin hire, someone with a knockout record of bringing in talented recruits.
“Most importantly, lets get the right effin hire, someone with a knockout record of bringing in talented recruits.”
Amen.
No ol’ chums or nepotism hires (e.g. Langsdorf).
I hear they will consolidate and pass Davis’ duties to Greg Newhouse, a guy who recruits can really relate to.
All kidding aside, are there many unemployed guys out there with proven track records in recruiting who are willing to take a relatively small job on the staff? I don’t know the answer, just asking. If not, hopefully there is a young, gregarious candidate out there that can become one.
Damn! I was hoping it would be Langsdorf or Mark Banker. They need to take advantage of this and get a damn good recruiter. If they get a really good recruiter I may just be excited for the future of the program.
Todd McNair
Who else could hire him and lose zero respect?
That is a genius idea. McNair was just a scapegoat after-all. Carroll may or may not have known but Kiffin and Orgeron must have.
I’m all for it. We know he won’t be hired but it would be nice.
The interwebs has narrowed it down to 8 candidates.
Ken Simonton
Lydell Wilson
Jason Ray
Andre Powell
Jeff banks
Clarence McKinney
Keary Colbert
Francis St. Paul
Whattya think?
http://oregonstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1184299
And upon further review, they added Ladanian Tomlinson to that list. They can’t count and I can’t fact check.
But I think he’s currently employed.
I like Clarence McKinney out of that list.
I’m already starting to dread this…I know Riley is going to hire a 50-something good ol’ boy from the days of yore.
I don’t think he will hire any 50 something at all. He will hire a 30 something who Riley believes has potential to someday be a really good recruiter(sounds just like the football players he recruits, I know).
Thus the future Simonton hire.
Why do you think that?
Sure, he’s had some of these cats with him forever, but how many 50+ guys has he hired recently? Locey, sure…5 years ago. He was 50 when he was hired.
Seumalo, Hayward, Davis…all young. That’s 3 or the last 4 guys hired.
Because he’s yet to hire a great recruiter. Plus it’s funny to say he’ll hire a 50 year old buddy.
Hey Seumalo is going to lure his kid to OS next year. That kid is a beast. Who says he can’t recruit?
Is that a given?
Almost. The kid right now is only interested in OSU. If they can’t get Isaac Seumalo there’s no hope for the staff.
PLEASE hire Simonton
The problem with Simonton is it would take him 5 years to establish relationships with high school coaches.
What do you all think if Ken was hired ?
I don’t like it. They need recruiting help in the short term. Simonton could help in long term but that’s a need right now.
Meh…
I like him as a person. He was a good football player in college. I’d rather they hire a guy with SOME experience as a coach or even a grad assistant. Simonton seems completely disinterested in getting into coaching. I dunno…maybe I missed something, but I don’t think he wants to be a coach.
And I agree with angry…McKinney is my favorite of that list. He’s familiar with Texas and spent time as a recruiting coordinator.
Not McNair eh?
Well then, McKinney is a decent choice of the list above. Most of the rest is just silly.
50-something buddy from yore?
Sylvester Croom
I like Lydell Wilson and Andre Powell.
Lydell could be a future star, and he has deep roots in Texas. Powell on the other hand, could help bring us more east coast recruits, and Clemson has had a lot of decent RB’s lately.
Scratch Powell, we need someone younger.
From next year’s crop of high school seniors in Texas and Oklahoma, identify the five-star players with dads who are coaches. Then hire one of those guys.
Just kidding. Sort of. Not really….
Speaking of the good old boys, please tell me it won’t be Gary Beck! Riley will have an urge to plug him into this position but hopefully common sense will prevail.
Beck is done coaching. He won’t ever do it again. He loves his current position and doesn’t have any desire to coach anymore. If he did, he would have started up again long ago. Plus he would be a terrible fit, even Riley knows that.
You know why Simonton is the best hire?
Because we’re going to have a new, young RB next year, with several being developed, and he’s the best RB OSU has ever had. He’s been in the system and he’s won games.
Thinking that our RB coach will be some miracle-working recruiter is ridiculous. It’s more important to get someone who can develop the 3-stars we have right now, and help this program win games.
Simonton has no experience, no HS connections, and for all we know no interest in the job.
I think high school connections matter a lot less when you have a great player recruiting. Yes, if it’s some 50-year-old who never played competitively, he better bring that to the table. What a former stud player can bring to recruiting is a different angle. And considering how awesome our recruiting has been lately, we could use a different angle.
And again, a RB coach isn’t just about recruiting. I want someone who can actually develop talent, and again, a great RB should be able to do that.
RB’s mostly have it or they don’t. Not much development to do in this position (compared to others at least). Mostly pass blocking schemes, which can be taught by other coaches. Need a recruiter.
What do you think about Francis St. Paul, from Northern Arizona University? I looked up his bio and you can see it here: http://www.nauathletics.com/sports/fball/coaches/stpaul
What I like is he’s young and energetic, He has 5-6 years of coaching experience, he has experience playing in the NFL (which is important trying to lure kids to Corvallis, every kid has dreams to play in the NFL), he has a degree in Business & Marketing, he already has recruiting experience/ties in Southern California and Texas, and he would see OSU as a step forward in his career. His resume looks great, in my opinion!
Look for yourself and see how he coaches: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RkJtlPV240
Also, what makes someone an ideal recruiter, what are some of the characteristics one would look for?
I’d like to see a guy who not only has connections in TX but further to the East too, like MS, AL, etc.
Ducks commit Jerrard Randall is instead heading to a JC. Just an FYI.
That was the rumor all along. I’m surprised an Asian physicist named Jerrard Randall didn’t show up to take the SAT, though. I guess his HS transcript was the culprit.
I wonder how many yuck recruits are heading to the LCJ = Lane County Jail in the future? U of O, todays U of Miami.
What if we tried to get Lee Hull back on the staff?
Been there, done that, without results. Anyone can recruit to Maryland.
It’s not like Hull was a great recruiter for us.
Here are some other names I like:
George Godsey (UCF) – Only 32 years old and can recruit Florida. Also landed a 4-star at UCF in Josh Robinson over Michigan, which isn’t an easy thing to do.
Pierre Ingram (Louisiana Tech) – Very young, was on the coaching staff at Villanova when they won a national championship, and can recruit in the south like in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.
Marquel Blackwell (South Florida) – Currently a GA at USF, could be a coaching star. Can recruit Florida very well, as he was a coach in the high school Florida ranks.
Recruiting Florida is expensive if you live in Oregon. I don’t see the point in hiring an east coast guy. I’d look California and as far east as Texas. After that you’d be up against the law of diminishing returns.
Maybe this is a stupid suggestion, but don’t we have Harbaugh’s son on our staff? Or did he go elsewhere? Honestly, Harbaugh is a name that equates to good coaching. This would be the only move of nepotism I’d actually support.
But I think Francis is our guy…but the most recent suggestions are very, very interesting.
Trust me though, whoever will be hired will NOT be a product of outside the box thinking.
I think Jay Harbaugh is a GA? He’s really young, but if he has the knowledge and personality of the rest of his family, it’s not a bad idea at all.
The thing I worry about is he likely has no relationship with coaches in California, etc. That takes a while to develop, and it’s why you want a guy with some experience. Heyward had no experience in this regard, and it’s taken him 3 years to become just an average recruiter.
Billy Lynch should be available since his father was fired.
