Due to Easter holiday, the baseball team will be playing games Thursday through Saturday.
Below are my projected starters for the weekend, though they could change.

As you can tell from the numbers, Washington State's pitching is very weak.
The two most interesting stories in this series are Josh Osich and a possible team let down. Can Osich maintain his stride? The Stanford game was promising. Will the Beavers be bored? I don't sense complacency from this bunch. However, what they must avoid is emotional disinterest now that the "most difficult" part of the season is over. In the Pac-10, every weekend is difficult. Fans don't seem to realize this, assuming the Beavers will easily sweep the series. Hopefully the baseball team has more humility, and a healthy respect for all opponents. I think they do, and I think this will be a good weekend. Then again, I sold my Apple stock yesterday at $342…
I predict the Wazzu players run over to Truax, grab the first RB they see and throw him to the ground 10 yards out of bounds.
Here are the official new Okie St. jerseys. Notice Okie St. was smart and there are 7 official combos. You want atleast 7 and different pant/jersey/helmet combos that you ACTUALLY will wear. Oregon State and too many other schools don’t use certain combos. But if you design them in a way where the look is pretty good regardless you make it more interesting and spice it up for the fans. Oregon State right now (minus the Giant Killers) is just using four combos. (This gets too repetitive and stale. With 7 or so you could highlight a couple combos or an alternate helmet more in a certain year if you wanted)

I am not a huge fan of gray but Oregon St. used to be the Aggies and be gray way back in the day. If we wanted it for a pant possibility I would be OK with it. I saw Rafael Nadal in a Black headband, orange shirt and gray shorts and it looked good and interesting. With WSU using it and now Okie St, we should keep its usage on the low side but I don’t think we should rule it out completely as it actually goes with our history.
I give the Okie St. efforts a 8.4 out of 10. I gave ASU a 7.6 and WSU a 6.35.

You continually post these football uniforms in every thread, to the point I am wondering if you are a spammer. Knock it off.
There must have been like 75 to 90 comments on the ASU and WSU unis. Like it or not we have to differentiate ourselves with Okie St. since we have the same colors and OSU thing going on. They even are taking claim to “O-State” so we can’t take that from them like we did “OS”.
Sorry I offended you but Okie St unis are relevant to Oregon State athletics in general. This will have a small influence on baseball unis as well. Not exactly baseball material, but I also knew the game didn’t start until 5:30. People just scroll down when the time comes, but once a new thread is up 99% of activity and comments are in that thread. I figured we had time to kill Angry. The other OSU jerseys do look pretty good and in general it has the balance and combos I am hoping we end up with when Steven Jackson and Tinker’s new OS uniforms eventually come.
Like it or not, this thread is about baseball.
I think coach Casey will have the guys up for this series, but it is an interesting angle coming off 3 really tough series.

That’s why I opened a FORUM Topic regarding Football Uniforms IN the Football category…there’s a place for everything and the uniform discussion is not in this Blog post. Why do we have a forum if we don’t use it accordingly? I thought I was “obsessed” with uniforms, but clearly I have a fascination with them and you have the obsession. Feel free to add to the Forum any time…I’d be happy to take a look at what your thoughts and ideas are there, otherwise, shut up about the uniforms in irrelevant blog posts. I told you previously that the uni comments were likely Nike plants trying to spark discussion. It would help if the company weren’t one of the worst slave traders in the world. But they would still create crap products that are ill-fitting and ugly. The constant push for publicity on any Nike affiliated uni change just speaks to the “style over substance” existence of this company.
What sickens me more is that the claims of Nike being so good to us are garbage. We just reached the $700k level this year in the exact same market as Duck High. That’s hundreds of thousands less than what they were getting 15 years ago. It’s also less than one-third what they get now.
If anyone wants to bring success into the conversation, then they can stick it. Nikegon has received t milliens of millions of dollars more than OSU in the last 15 years, and they keep begging the state to fully fund their facility upgrades.
Why can’t someone just look around and guess that the grass isn’t just greener on the other side? It’s something different. It’s actually green.
If success brings the dough, then Indiana must be highly successful. They inked an eight year, $21m contract three years ago.

I am cautiously optimistic that the ball team will keep nose down and get the job done. They have better talent than WSU, but in itself doesn’t mean victories. It’s the mental aspect (as always) that will drive success in every series they play. The “one game, one inning, one play, one pitch” approach is the right one IMO to stay focused on the task at hand.
I think the Beavers take the series just not sure if they will sweep or not. It helps to be at home and WSU has been pretty bad, but this is the Pac-10 and it’s never easy to sweep someone, no matter how bad they’ve been. I think it will be important for the Beavers to get out to good sized leads early on in this series. A team that struggles often will get deflated if they fall down early and their effort may not be where it needs to be. If the Beavers play a real tight game late against WSU anything can happen. You don’t always want your relievers to have to protect a 1 run lead, sometimes they will have an off day and you can lose. So definitely, the Beavers should jump out to early leads and not leave much doubt late about the outcome.
Interested to see how Scott Schultz does in his second start in conference if he does indeed get another start. I would think he will start off better, as he will be more relaxed. Hopefully Pat Casey would allow him to go at least 5 innings for once. Pat Casey always seems to have a much quicker trigger on Schultz than he does on other pitchers.
I will say they sweep WSU, but I wouldn’t at all be surprised if the Cougars won a game.
Casey’s trigger is just as fast on Wetzler. Schultz made it two full innings before he was yanked last time out. Wetzler got through something like two or three batters.
I think it has more to do with how well they’re throwing, not just trusting them. If Berberet reports that the usual array of pitches aren’t there or the location is off, then Casey goes to the next arm. I think both Schultz and Wetzler would be served to either accept middle relief for now. If not that, then they should be used in an all-star capacity. Go for two innings, and step aside for the next guy. Maybe if they know there will be no decision for them, they can relax a little.
Schultz hasn’t had a start go shorter than 3 1/3 innings. Wetzler against ASU faced 5 batters before he was yanked. I think it’s different between them. If Wetzler is pitching well, Pat Casey rides him and let’s him go deep or until he gets himself in a lot of trouble. If Schultz pitches well, Pat Casey will pull him for no apparent reason.
If Casey was going to pull Schultz against Stanford he could have done it in the first, but he didn’t and after the first Scott pitched the next 3 2/3 and gave up just a hit and a walk. Strange time to pull him. That’s what I mean when he has a quick trigger on him. He was pitching just fine.
Like I said, it probably has to do with what Berberet calls. For some reason both those two are shaky in starts, but they both show they have talent enough to step in as middle relief and throw well. It has to be mental. And once that edge is lost as a starter, the C is the one who knows where the game is going.
Schultz was likely pulled against Stanford because they had already adjusted to him through one line-up cycle. And Casey wasn’t going to risk another rally in the meat of the order. Since Wetzler throws quality middle relief (as does Schultz), he could be relied upon to shake the mental problems he faces as a starter.
What might be best is to throw Nygren or someone else out there for a one or two inning start, then bring Schultz or Wetzler in to carry it to the late innings. Nygren is a one rotation pitcher at the moment, so carrying him into a second cycle is where we get hurt with him starting.
Stickler alert: but Berberet doesn’t technically call pitches.
Above you said “how well they’re throwing”; that’s probably what you meant here, too.
I meant that Berberet gets to tell Casey how they’re throwing. Thus, he makes the call on how far someone goes. He may not call the pitches, but he knows what they are and where they’re supposed to be located.

My girlfriend works 3 blocks from Goss and she says it looks decent right now, overcast but no rain.
I watched every game of both our CWS title runs. Also watched every game of the last two series. It is fun rooting for the Beavs when they are playing so well as a cohesive team. A #3 ranking even beats the #4 we had in 2005 I think. I am confident we get the series. Hoping we can pull off a third sweep and really get the attention of the SEC and national writers and pollsters besides Baseball America.

Wow. Pat Casey isn’t starting Carter Bell, Danny Hayes or Michael Miller. Garrett Nash, Brian Stamps and Luke Acosta are getting a start. Not sure I particularly like this by Casey. I like Luke Acosta getting a start. He’s a pretty decent hitter, but Stamps and Nash have struggled to say the least. Hopefully it works out and all three have a good game. Just not sure about it. Kavin Keyes is starting at 3B. Will be interesting to see how he does out in the field after struggling quite a bit earlier in the season in the field.
Where did you get the info? Nash hasn’t been in long enough to say he’s struggling. He and Stamps are both ten times the fielder Miller is though. I think Casey wants to wake some bats up against what is supposed to be an inferior foe.
So is it Nash, Stamps, Norris in the OF? Jones, Acosta, Dunn and Keyes in the IF? Or is Acosta the DH, and Smith fills in at 2B?
Nash has started 18 games and played in 26 and is hitting .224. Safe to say that’s struggling. I agree both Nash and Stamps are both so much better in the outfield and have far superior arms but they just don’t get on base enough to warrant being full time starters, unfortunately.
It’s Nash, Stamps and Barnes in the OF. Norris at 1B, Smith at 2B, Dunn at SS and Keyes sat 3B. That obviously makes Acosta the DH.

Yes, but Nash has been out for a couple weeks. What he brings to the plate is more intangibles than Miller as well. He’s a better baserunner, and he gets around a lot faster. Even though his OBP is lower, his OB moments have more quality results.
That’s not saying Miller hasn’t played well. Casey always has the option of bringing him in at any time. It’s just a good time to play great defensive players with suspect or rehabbing bats. Getting everyone involved right now helps in some series down the line.
I don’t really have a problem with this lineup. From what I’ve seen, Acosta is a good hitter. Maybe the WSU catcher is poor, and so Casey is playing the speed lineup. Or maybe this just one of his famous “hunches.”
Gotta keep the rust off everyone.
Interesting coach Casey going with Nygren today. Hopefully it’s one of those 3 innings and done deals.
Nygren has really only had two poor outings, and one of them was the relief effort against LBSU where he gave up a bunch of runs but still won the game. Even he has had that one poor one-third inning bomb (UCSB). So hopefully that’s out of his system.
It’s also hard to find fault with Casey’s management of this team this year. There are points here and there, but the win/loss ratio against some good teams speaks for itself.
I don’t like this move unless Casey is comfortable that Osich is now a dominating #2. He was close last weekend, but I still say there is more work to be done, and more upside to Schultz, who could be a solid #3 at worst and possibly surprise in a good way.
The plan is preparing for the post-season, so which of these guys do I/we/Casey want pitching those games? For me it is Boyd. If not him, Schultz.
I think it’s a short week for Schultz/Wetzler, so Nygren is the solution. If it’s truly short, then we shouldn’t see either in relief today. So I guess Jones is who we want if Nygren fails? I know I don’t want Gorton or Baylis out there.
I thought Casey would go with Gaviglio today. 6 days since his last start is enough rest. I thought he would put Schultz on the mound Saturday afternoon.

Visiting teams have been having a really difficult time in left field all year and that continues. Brian Stamps hits a double that should have been caught.
Nash can’t execute a bunt and then can’t get him to third. Now they have a runner on third and two outs.
Washington State is pretty bad defensively. Two different plays that should have been outs result in a 1-0 Beaver lead.

It would do Brian Stamps a lot of good to shorten his swing. His swing is so long. It’s almost as if he think he’s a power hitter when he has basically no power. He needs to shorten his swing so he can get to the baseball quicker and put the ball in play a lot more.

Not really surprising the Beavers offense has not looked good. Acosta hasn’t started in a month, Nash and Stamps have had their struggles at the plate and that has continued tonight. You could tell from the start the game was going to be a struggle with the lineup they had.

There’s a “going through the motions” feel to this game. Beavs need to pick up the intensity and take this game now. The longer WSU hangs around…

Bad call, but am I the only one who finds Parker’s outrage a tad annoying. You would have thought the call caused the Beavs to lose the game in the bottom of the ninth.
I found it pretty hilarious. It’s entertaining. But I can definitely see why you would think it’s annoying. He does need to tone it down a bit.

True. I like Mike Parker but some don’t because he can be a little dramatic. It was a terrible call but not exactly a game changer.
I like Parker’s excitement cause without a visual on the game, he adds to the boos you can hear in the background. It’s not like he goes on and on and on about the call being made. He gets caught up in the moments of the game. There’s still a bit of baseball left in this game.
Don’t understand what the gripin’ about Nygren is about… he looked pretty dominant that inning. :)

He will have one or two great innings and his other innings he gets hit hard. He’s just been very fortunate.

Have you seen a pitcher catch more breaks than Nygren? If you don’t watch the game and just look at the box score, it looks as if he was close to dominant tonight. When you watch him pitch that’s definitely not the case.
Brian Stamps is exactly what Angry has claimed. He’s Willie Mays Hayes from Major League. He is really fast, makes great defensive plays, but he doesn’t hit much.
So next season he is going to come in with some serious warning track power? GOING GOING GOING….NOT QUITE GONE… I love the Major League movies.

Good things happen when you beat top contenders early; now the rest of the field can cut each others throats. Beavs still need to keep the “game at a time” attitude and put Cal and UCLA down themselves.
