Baseball: Civil War (Oregon State @ Oregon)

126

A lot of uncertainty around the pitching matchups. The picture is incomplete, but right now looks like this:

Date Opponent/Location Pitchers Time
05/27 Eugene, OR Sam Gaviglio (11-1, 1.72) vs Tyler Anderson (7-3, 2.24) 7:06 p.m.
05/28 Eugene, OR Josh Osich (6-3, 3.44) vs TBD 2:06 p.m.
05/29 Eugene, OR TBD vs TBD 1:06 p.m.

Beavs have a (long) shot at a national seed. Depends on them sweeping and some help.

Teams to root against: Georgia Tech, Texas, Florida State, Texas A&M, and Rice.

Clearly it's more likely they'll be hosting a regional. That's fine. They've played tight at home with pressure on, so being on the road might relieve some of that.

Based on their comments, the Duck players seem pumped about this series. The key to beating Oregon is getting to their (bad) bullpen early. Beavs better come ready to play. This fan base can't absorb another Civil War defeat.

  1. I’ll be at this series with my brother, hopefully the Beavers will be ready to play and in order to get a national seed they have to sweep this series, IMO. Should be a fun series.

  2. I feel more confident going into this series than the USC series. But, if the Beavs don’t perform well and lose the series against Oregon then I don’t see them doing well in the tournament either. They have to play like their backs are against the wall from here on. Not winning the Pac-10 title at this point would be a huge disappointment.

    • Agreed on all points.

PS. Hartford (6 wins) is absolutely killing RPI. We’d be 15 if we played a crappy team instead of arguably the worst team in America. That’s just (typical) bad luck.

  3. Hopefully there will be no Hartford’s on the schedule next year. Anyone have a video stream link for this weekend for those who don’t have Comcast?

  4. If Beavs take 2 of 3, and end up first in the Pac, I can’t imagine a Pac 10 team not getting a National seed at all. It’s a good conference, you’d think one team would get it. Or if ASU sweeps UCLA and splits with OS (OS wins tiebreaker), do they still give the National Seed to ASU? Maybe even if they win 2 and get 2nd? I could see the Beavs getting passed up for a NS by the #2 team…

How many times did the Beavs fail to make a regional but UW did back in the North/South split days even though they finished ahead of UW? Maybe not that many, but I just remember how they sucked that a team below them got to play on, and they didn’t.

    • I read that #18 is the lowest RPI to ever receive a national seed. Beavs are at #24…a sweep of Oregon won’t raise them 6 spots, so they’ll need help somewhere else. Or, they’ll need the NCAA to set a new precedent for RPI.

Again, is this really a big deal? I like them playing a regional at home, but I almost prefer them going on the road after that. They’ve been tight at home lately, basically since they’ve had pressure. Getting away and being an underdog would be better imo. Beavs have played their best as an underdog.

      • I’d agree. Yet an article today in GT has Lees talking up how tough mentally this group of players is, including…”What gets you over the top is the courage and toughness and work ethic,” Lees said.

Let’s hope that toughness shows up when it really counts.

  5. Anyone got a comcast stream for us without it? I HATE the fact that televised games are actually more difficult for me to be able to watch.

  6. I’m offering 3 bitcoins to anyone who can set up a stream…

If you’re not familiar with Bitcoins, there is information here:
    http://www.weusecoins.com/

Bitcoins are currently trading at $8.60 USD at mtgox.com

    Any takers?

Instead, if any of the rest of you care enough, I’ve also got a request up at
    http://www.myp2pforum.eu/threads/56913-Will-pay-3-bitcoins-for-Oregon-St-Oregon-baseball-streams

Anyone else who wants the stream could reply in that thread and offer a bitcoin or two also… might make someone decide it’s worth it.

  7. The good news is apparently all of the players are aware of the comments that Oregon players have been making (in particular that article from the ER where their 2nd baseman said he wished they could play the Beavers every series). Hopefully this gives them some extra fire to pull off the sweep.

“This fan base can’t absorb another Civil War defeat.” – perfectly said.

  8. I keep hearing ( or seeing in print ) that Riley needs to get to the Holiday bowl or better. Last year the Alamo bowl came in at # 2 and dropped all the other bowls down a notch. Things were a little askew last year as # 2 Stanford was in the Orange bowl. So basically the holiday bowl is the new # 3 Sun bowl. Riley needs to shoot a little higher than #3. I would imagine outside of National championships or at large BCS the winner of the PAC 12 bowl will get the rose bowl and the loser the Alamo bowl. Except the Alamo bowl has some wiggle room to choose someone else.

    • I agree, but 80% plus of years we should be Holiday bowl or better. Problem is Riley has only gotten as high as the Sun Bowl. Atleast the Holiday would be new and in a better location. Alamo and up would be more ideal but I don’t even think Riley will make a Holiday Bowl for a few years. Waiting for him as he is just content to be somewhere where he can maintain as long as possible even with 6-6 and 7-5 is going to be tedious.

Mike Leach would be great and such a breath of fresh air and actually beat Oregon maybe even 50% of the time. We would be one of the more sexy programs under him and get alot of national media attention whereas one wonders if Riley can beat Oregon more than 1 time in the next 7 years, since he has lost the last 3, for a 1 out of 10 record against them. I don’t think he will to be bluntly honest.

  9. Alright, I’ve got us a stream. :D It’s costing me a bit, but well worth it.

    Heres the URL:
    hciremmenocato/vt.nitsuj.www//:ptth
    Password: bitcoinrules

The url is backwards there… please don’t repost it normally as I’d like to keep it from getting indexed by google.

This should be up for all three games this weekend :)

  10. CraigBeav, I am going to hold a fund raiser in June or July…if I get donations I’ll try to recoup your money. Keeping a channel like this might be a good idea.

    • Sounds good… I don’t actually know the guy running this. Just found him online and he was willing to set it up. Seems pretty friendly though… I bet he could keep it goin if we keep in contact.

  11. Gaviglio’s been hanging that slider all night, and it comes back to bite him. 2run HR Ducks.

    4-1 7th inning.

    ASU is losing…

  12. How do you lose to the fucking ducks. They literally are shit. Im disappointed in the beavers, majorly. It was like Omaha beach there, no pun intended, oh wait yes it was.

    • It’s not easy to hit against a pitcher who’s going to go in the first round in the draft. Anderson is a stud. The Beavs’ best shot of winning was to get Anderson to pitch fewer than six innings and they didn’t work the count well enough to do that.

That said, the Beavs are in a bad slump at the plate even against weaker pitching. They need to get out of it to win the series and a Pac-10 title. Probably even if they get swept they’re hosting a regional, so the pressure is off in that sense.

  13. As the pressure’s mounted, they’ve played worse.

You really have to question is if this team is even worthy of a regional. Play down the stretch and RPI are the two biggest parts of that equation. I’d say the Beavers don’t deserve it. They were only able to play well when underdogs. If I’m on the selection committee I see a team that would choke (as a favorite) in a regional.

    • What’s been missing in the last two weeks has been hitting with runners in scoring position, and especially at third base. I haven’t been keeping count, but it seems like they’ve actually scored more runs from second than from third. I had tonight down for a loss all along, but the Beavs definitely had opportunities to win.

I know OSU’s fielding percentage is well below .970, but I forget the specific number. That’s not helping them, but what’s worse is that errors are coming in bunches. You can get out of an inning with no runs if you commit one error, but once you’ve made two or three you’re damn lucky if you only give up one.

I’m not able to get into their heads so I’m not going to speculate too much on the mental aspect–whether it’s an underdog thing, or just a plain-vanilla slump, or what. But there’s no doubt they’ve lost their mojo. For a long time, this was a team that was wiling themselves to win, not relying on talent. It worked for them then and it can work again, but they’ve got to make it happen.

  14. we’ve lost 4 of 5, all to teams well below us. I don’t see more than 1 win down there. and probably not even that. We’ve pretty much been downright shitty since blowing big lead to Huskies. After this game tonight I don’t see the pattern of the last 2 weeks changing. After all, UO has beaten us at everything else this year (men’s sports) save for 1 baseball game. Just absolute, total fuckin’ humiliation.

  15. Hopefully you guys have calmed down now, still have two games left in the series, the Beavers can easily win this series. I have a feeling they will play well today and start playing good baseball again. Hopefully they get things rolling again and get ready for a postseason run.

  16. You can just feel the Beavs just sinking. Sorry, wouldn’t surprise me if they get swept this weekend. At the moment, i have no faith in them, they just have looked like shit for multiple games now. Hard to believe these guys have been the #2 team in the country. Very disappointing. Maybe they’ll surprise me, but just seems the fight is gone….

      • Especially puzzling since Stamps isn’t a double play threat, and this pitcher has been walking people…never question Pat Casey, though, he knows more than any of us because he’s won two National Titles. ;)

  17. If there’s a bright spot, it’s that we’ve got Jones over ninety pitches going into the sixth. It’s possible we’ll see the bullpen this inning. It’s a slim hope, but it’s something.

  18. Parker is obsessed with the P-10 Championship (or co-championship), who cares at this point. They don’t really deserve it. This is why Parket gets on my nerves.

  19. I didn’t listen to Parker at all this weekend, and I actually feel better (mentally) than last weekend. It’s an interesting experiment that everyone should try and post the results.

  20. WTF????????????????????????? Why? How in the Hell could this happen? Not Baseball! Next uo will add wrestling and dominate us in that sport too. OSU cannot beat uo in ANY sport this year! FUCK!!!!!

  21. At some schools not beating your rival year after year, costs you your job. Even with success otherwise, getting beat by the rival is a no go!

  22. It appears to me that OSU has lost their competitive edge, not only in baseball, but in every major sport. OSU is consisitent in choking vs uo. Look at this series, and the 2 Civil Wars in football where all OSU had to do is beat their rival to go to the Rose Bowl, TWICE!!!!! Result epic choke. uo is consistent with winning at the right time, and with everything coming easy for them. If there is any hint of a struggle, they sprinkle a little Phil Knight money on it and Boom, success. It’s disgusting but it’s the truth. I don’t see things ever changing unless the NCAA decides to do something, I’m afraid. Being a Beaver fan is like being with a girl who repeatedly cheats on you, and you keep taking her back hoping she will change. Is it loyalty or stupidity? I still bleed Black & Orange, but this is how I feel, and I know that I’m not alone.

    • I don’t think Phil Knight “sprinkled any money” on the Ducks this past Friday, or before their weak ’08 vintage destroyed us. These epic collapses are about OSU, not the Ducks. Never again can I Beaver write “they Couged it”…they are the new Cougs.

      • My point wasn’t that Phil Knight is the reason uo won the series vs OSU. My point is that uo is the only school that can start a program from scratch and instantaneously be a winning program, and that has everything to do with Phil Knight “Nike” money! Horton is paid over 1 million per year, brand new baseball facility fully paid for, without “phases”. OSU struggles in everything on and off the field, uo does not. uo gets instant successful results in anything they want. It’s like they’re an Apple product will a Phil Knight app for anything and everything they want. Need a new arena? Neeed a new glass palace? Need a new baseball stadium? There’s an app for that. Need 5 star football players to commit? There’s a Willie & Phil app for that? Need to be on every ESPN commercial? There’s an app for that? Need to keep the NCAA violations away? There’s an app for that. If you don’t have Uncle Phil/ NIKE money, well, then you don’t have Uncle Phil/NIKE money.

    • Them winning the baseball series has little to do with money. The rest of your analogies I agree with. Being a Beaver fan is like ‘dating’ the hot girl even while you know she is ‘dating’ others. With the stipulation that when you start to think she really cares for you the most (ie about to win a Pac-10 title) she lets you down and the Sisyphus-like cycle continues. You can be teased of better days but never truly have them firmly in your grasp.

Something needs to change with BDC or Riley or the way the Ath Dept is run though. Not exactly sure, but inability to beat rivals is suicide for a program. I think the best bet is give Riley one to two years max to beat Oregon and if he can’t and loses 5 in a row then obviously he is not right for Oregon St, because beating your rival is about 40% of your job. That is how important it is to the school’s reputation.

  23. What are your thoughts on the Ducks getting a tourney bid now ? Horton is really making his case in the Oregonian this morning and apparently working his contacts on the committee. I say they blew it early on and came together too late in the season. Horton put the chances at around 40%.

      • I thought I read that the selections will be done before the end of the Beaver/Duck game, so I am not sure how that will play into it. If that is the case, then I guess their selection is being debated as we speak on the merits of the Ducks having won the series?

  24. Regional hosts have been selected, Beavs are one of them. Bruins and Sun Devils also host. Seeds and other teams get picked monday per ncaa.com

  25. Regionals announced:

    Corvallis, OR (Oregon State)
    Tempe, AZ (Arizona State)
    Los Angeles, CA (UCLA)
    Atlanta, GA (Georgia Tech)
    Charlottesville, VA (Virginia)
    Chapel Hill, NC (North Carolina)
    Tallahassee, FL (Florida State)
    Clemson, SC (Clemson)
    Nashville, TN (Vanderbilt)
    Gainesville, FL (Florida)
    Columbia, SC (South Carolina)
    Houston, TX (Rice)
    Austin, TX (Texas)
    College Station, TX (Texas A&M)
    Fort Worth, TX (TCU)
    Fullerton, CA (Cal State Fullerton)

  26. If the dorks make a regional and end up in omaha for td ameritrades first cws…i’m going to puke every time i’m downtown!

  27. First inning is a perfect example of why the Beavers are struggling. They aren’t executing the routine plays. Both teams get the lead off runner on and try to bunt him over. Beavs fail and the Ducks didn’t. And now we are trailing 1-0.

  28. Who has said they like the Duck OSN announcers more than MP are idiots! The guy called a home run when it CLEARLY did not clear the fence. Then he kept saying things like, “They should paint that sign a different color”, “That’s hard to see on an overcast gray day”, and that “That would be a home run next year cause he’ll surely be stronger next year”. Really Uck homer? Really? Strength doesn’t mean you’d hit it farther with the same stroke/swing that you took on that double off the fence.

    • Who cares? Parker’s calls are unreliable. When you see the video to match his call this becomes obvious. At least these guys don’t whine and pontificate.

They also give the Beavers credit when it’s due (which hasn’t been often). Are they great? No. But they don’t give me an aneurysm with the middling minutia.

      • The one thing that bugged me about these guys is they don’t know how to say the opponents’ names like Gaviglio.

  29. Looks like they’re trying to get the pitchers pitch count up and not hitting hittable pitches like the announcers are saying. They aren’t all that bad, but their voices do annoy me.

    • I’ve been thinking about this for a while…I don’t think so…Beavs ran into a bunch of arms that will be in MLB. I think that’s the problem.

Oregon’s #1 is way better than Gaviglio, so then it’s down to Osich beating their #2, and Osich is inconsistent/not a guy you want in that situation. Today, their #3 is clearly way better than ours. This game is about pitching, and the Beavs walked the tightrope earlier this year and now they’re not. I don’t think it’s much to do with a couple hitters returning from injury.

      • But could the other players have been more focused without their “stars” to rely on? I just think it is interesting that the “spirit” seems to have left.

  30. This team is slumping offensively across the board…. or, Oregon has got great pitching (can we get some of those guys to transfer to our team?). Hitting ANYTHING has become almost a rare event over the last 5 games. They sure picked a shitty time of year to fall into it.

  31. Difference is the ucks go to the plate swinging and playing aggressive and the beavs are watching pitches go right down the middle. Are so called best hitter just watched 3 straight with runners on. Looks like the ucks want it more.

  32. The Ducks color guy is Dwight Jaynes who was a long time journalist for the Oregonian and Portland Tribune. I think he used to cover the Blazers. Not sure that he has done much television, but he is not bad.

  33. The Oregon pitchers, this entire series, have had tremendous “bite” on their offspeed pitches to go along with velocity on the fastball. Beavs pitchers honestly look like boys amongst men. It’s why I kept saying earlier this year that Oregon is a good team.

As I type this, Wetzler hangs a curveball. Again, not bite or (dominating) velocity…bad combo…pitches will get hit.

  34. Beaver batters have looked over matched all week end. Ucks are just more aggressive and seem to be the better team. Casey and his team are playing worse every game.

  35. I like how the announcers are talking about all the good Duck wins. There have been 26 losses and a case can be made that they underachieved this year. Spin is a wonderful thing, but who knows the Ducks may make it in. They seem to have the pitching.

  36. This is going to come off wrong, but I sort of like seeing the Ducks sweep us. Why?
Because OSU fans are delusional Pollyannas. The only time they’ll be critical or see err is if the Beavers lose to the Ducks. Everything else can be justified with excuses etc. But nobody will stand for losing to the Ducks. I think this is good.

Get mad, Beavos. Ducks are going to the tournament at our expense, and they knocked us out of a Super Regional!

    • Is Horton well thought of by the powers that be on the selection committee? This sweep gives them a lot to consider. 33 wins is a solid season. I wonder who they might bump out of the tourney?

    • Makes plenty of sense to me. It’s been at least five weeks since the Beavs were regularly getting hits with runners in scoring position. The pitchers we’ve faced the last two weeks have been so good as to take away all of their clutch hitting, not just some of it. I don’t expect OSU to get embarrassed in the regional because the pitching probably wont be quite this good. I’d guess they’re at best 50-50 to advance. If they play to the best of their ability like they were earlier, they’ll advance. We know that they can do it because they’ve done so already. All that’s left is to do it.

  37. Off topic,

Well friends. I am sorry to say I have decided to give up my football season tickets. I cannot continue to support the current regime. Doing so would be to continue to do the same things and expect different results. They very definition of insanity. Riley is in his 12th year and there has been plenty of time to deliver something or anything better than a Sun Bowl. He has peaked. It would be a big mistake to give another decade or more and be happy with the lowest bowls in better years. This year does not look promising and in general it is just time for a breath of fresh air, not to be looking at countless mediocrity.

I will be watching at home and rooting for the school, but not this regime. BDC can continue to ignore fans like me all he wants but he will lose more supporters if he does. We are headed nowhere right now and need someone like a Leach who has been suggested.

Peace out. OSU Atheltics has some serious organizational problems and as a true fan I can’t add to it anymore. When we are ready to get serious about the changes we need, I hope to return. I’m thinking it could be awhile but I am not going to grow old watching Riley flounder and unable to ever beat our rival and think it is OK. Its not.
