This space is for Game 2 (6pm Pacific) observations and comments. Pre-game and post-game comments are welcome, too.
The buzz is that Schultz will get the start. I hope it's him or Boyd. Either way, I don't like our odds in this game. Surprise me, Beavs.
Video stream: ESPN3
Mike Parker is reporting that Ben Wetzler will start for the Beavers tonight. Interesting choice, but it was going to be no matter who Casey picked.
Yikes. That’s probably the worst possible choice.
At least it’ll be over fast, and we won’t have to waste much of our night.
Another weird thing going on tonight: Oregon State is the home team, so they’ll be batting 2nd, according to both Parker and the online GameTracker. I don’t get why the NCAA does this, it really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
It has always been the order, would be totally unfair to let Vandy be the 2nd team to bat all series.
2-0 Vandy, Wetzler gives up a 2 run bomb to the 3rd batter.
(Can anyone explain why Casey started Wetzler???)
Is this even worth watching? I recorded last nights game, watched the whole thing on fast forward after the 4th inning. I think this one will make me want to tear my eyeballs out.
I reserve judgment until after we bat. (Gulp) Go Beavs!
Can’t get ESPN3 and don’t have flash so I am using ESPN’s play-by-play. We are OAK in the score column. huh?

Vandy just left the door open, Beavers need to take advantage of any mistakes they get against this team.
I felt a little better knowing Parker Berberet was playing. I wish he was catching. Not sure Susac is doing much good.
Parker has been the better hitter all year.
Andrew has been the better hitter, it hasn’t been close. Parker struggled for much of Pac-10 play. However, since Andrew’s return Parker has been better. Andrew has had some good games but has mostly struggled. Timing has been way off. He can’t catch up to the fastballs right now and is early on the breaking balls, worst place for a hitter. Hopefully Andrew figures things out quickly.
Won lots of games with Parker. Lost 6 of 7 when Andrew came back. Not saying we lost cause of Andrew but facts are facts.
I would say Andrew more talented and is a gifted hitter, but Berberet a better leader behind the plate and commands the staff better.
wouldn’t disagree but Andrew’s been back 3 or 4 weeks now and hasn’t hit much at all.
like during the next at-bat?
Good news is, Casey finally moved Susac out of the cleanup spot. Bad news is, he still struck out in a big spot. ><
I wish Wetzler would go after these guys earlier, these 1-0 and 2-0 counts are making me cringe.
I said Wetzler would get a start, I’m not surprised he got this start. Casey loves the guy but he’s just bad right now. He’ll be better next year but he shouldn’t have gotten this start. Schultz earned this start but just isn’t gonna get it. Maybe tomorrow? I doubt it though.
Funny you should mention that, Schultz is throwing in the bullpen right now.
I would like to see Duke get up right now. Wetzler is going to be killed.
Beavers really hitting this guy well. Lead-off double by Bell.
Garvin doesn’t have his usual good stuff. Balls are being left up and he’s quite hittable, Beavers need to take advantage.
Garrett Nash strikes out again. He has at least two a game.
Nice AB Nash
Barnes with the bonehead decision of the night so far as he bunts with two outs and the pitcher catches it. Casey should have bunted with Rodriguez. You can’t leave it up to the players to hit the ball to the right side. Really bad inning after Bell doubled.
Guy on 2nd with nobody out and he stays there. Ouch.
Lol at these Vandy fans…they sound like such rednecks.
Well, it is Tennessee…………..
Would be nice if Wetzler could find a way to keep Vandy at two runs and get through 5 innings.
Stamps can fly.
Beavers have to capitalize here. Runners on first and second and no outs.
Agreed. Garvin’s only going to give you so many chances to score. Bit of a dilemma here with his cleanup hitter coming up in Kavin Keyes, though.
Garvin makes an error and the bases are loaded with no outs. Have to get two runs here.
Garvin got rattled about Stamp’s speed. He’s vulnerable now, gotta get a bunch of runs here.
Susac is just flat out unproductive right now.
have a seat andrew(for the rest of the game).
aarrggh
It might be time to think about moving Berberet behind the plate and putting Hayes at 1B. Susac is just not getting it done. His timing is so poor right now, can’t wait for him to come around.
Patient person, are you? Enjoy your long wait. You took the words right out of me. Hayes or Norris can’t be any worse.
Precisely my thought.
Unofficial pitch count through 3 innings, Wetzler with 52 pitches, Garvin with 62. The run production is disappointing, but they are working the count much better tonight.
Need to get Wetzler out of this game now.
yeah, Wetzler is just terrible lol
The boy’s a time bomb.
Off topic:
For those who have not seen this site, it is a good Pac-12 board:
http://www.pac12board.com/
These Vandy fans are insufferable…”good swang, Conraad.” lol
Barnes is playing WAY too deep. Needs to play up more. If he does he may throw out the runner at third. Wetzler in trouble yet again.
Scott Schultz? You ready? Need you to save this game.
Angry is smarter than Casey ;)
Anyone could tell Wetzler was a bad choice. He’s been flirting with disaster all game. Didn’t understand why he would get this start.
Come on BEAVERS! Turn a double play.
Is Wetzler gonna escape this?
Wow.
suck it Wetzler doubters
Are you his dad or something?
You consider that good pitching? lol
Whew! Good job guys. Keep scoring on offense BEAVS!
That was a Houdini act, but I’ll take it. Nice to see it happen to the OTHER team, for once.
Think that was a missed hit and run execution.
Schultz is in for Wetzler.
And he throws a hanging banger on the first pitch…
Schultz not sharp right now. Hopefully he finds it now.
Vandy has a chance to blow the game open.
Report from the Beaver Sports Radio Network: if OSU manages to force a Game 3, it will be at 1 pm Pacific Daylight Time tomorrow. Not putting the cart before the horse, you understand, but thought it was worth mentioning.
No communication and Dunn gets hurt.
Looks like he’s staying in, that’s good news.
Dunn is not done. *zing*
3-2 Vandy. Beavers cannot allow another run this inning, have to keep it a 1 run game.
Outfielders need to play closer. Nash was playing so deep and it may have cost the Beavers a run. If he plays normal depth it may have been shallow enough for him to have a good shot to throw the runner out at home plate.
Good job by Scott to limit the damage. Need to get that run back now.
Ryan Dunn, as fate would have it, is the first batter this inning. No rest for the weary.
Dunn with a lead-off double. Great start to the inning. Fortunate to be playing in that ball park. Most other ball parks that is caught.
Thought Keyes should have bunted there…
Keyes has to move Dunn along. He takes an awful approach and makes a completely unproductive out and Dunn stays at second. Casey needs to bunt these guys in those situations now. Can’t trust them to get it done without bunting.
Rodriguez did the same earlier…they’re pull happy…don’t appear to know how to go the other way with a productive out (or a hit). Tyler Smith was very good at that…miss it.
Garvin really avoiding Parker.
Hopefully Susac can finally get on top of a ball. Hasn’t happened in quite some time.
LET’S GO BEAVERS!!
Wow, Vandy’s changing pitchers for SUSAC!?
If Andrew Susac strikes out again . . .
Don’t say it out loud, just try and think happy thoughts >.>
Only funny thing I’ve ever heard Mike Parker say . . . not quite sure what Susac did at the plate, but Parker said that Susac was so indecisive he couldn’t even figure out what to do with a walk.
Well that was a kick in the balls with a boot the size of Italy.
How many opportunties are we blowing? >< We've had plenty of chances to score with less than two outs and haven't done it.
Whenever there is a runner on third the Beavers seem to tense up and melt down. That at-bat by Carter was awful. Anyone else notice the outfielders for Vandy are in good position and the Beavers’ outfielders are way out of position. I get the Beavers are not used to this place but the coaching staff puts them in bad spots.
Beavs are playing tight when they’re the team with nothing to lose.
Vandy’s hitters go with the pitch…probably why they’re having more success and going to Omaha. Beavs are so pull happy.
Another mistake. Beavers making too many mistakes to beat a damn good Vandy team on the road.
Where was that pitch?
Schultz being squeezed a little bit here.
Mike Parker made the comment that Susac didn’t give the umpire a good look at the pitch before bluffing the runner back to 3rd, otherwise it might have been called a strike.
Beavers really have nobody to blame for a potential loss than themselves tonight.
If I told you on Friday morning that Ben Wetzler would pitch better than Sam Gaviglio or Scott Schultz…?
Are these fans chanting “ass hole”??
That’s game.
Well that was ugly.
Beavers blew opportunities and have made too many mistakes.
Well, I know who I will be rooting against in Omaha…
These snaggle-toothed inbreds are the worst fans I’ve ever witnessed.
they have to get excited about something. Most of their sports teams are awful.
Yeah, I already hated the likes of Cutler though.
I’ve always hated Vandy. Nothing to like about any SEC school. Hoping a Pac-10 team wins it all.
Didn’t hate them before because they were garbage at most things. You would think bottom feeders would know respect because they appreciate receiving it. Must be an SEC thing though.
Beavers pitchers just being crushed. Not the way you wanna see your year end.
Beavers really have nobody to blame for a potential loss than themselves tonight. If I told you going into this weekend that Ben Wetzler would pitch better than either Sam Gaviglio or Scott Schultz…?
Well, it’s been a nice ride this season, next year’s club will be better. Can’t be too upset about the year ending in the super regionals. Future is bright.
Nice stat…9 Beavs LOB through 5 innings.
Well, none left on base that go ’round..Is that an improvement?
As has always seemed to be the case, really need some big hitters. Small ball tends to get old, esp. when you have no choice. When your 2 leading and only .300 hitters are true freshman…enough said.
Kinda feels like the Beavers have packed it in, that’s 8 straight outs by OSU hitters.
Well that’s terrific.
We’re just getting embarrassed…want this to end so America can begin to forget.
Ouch. Boyd is getting just killed.
Geezus, turn a double play, then…
Westlake is a one-man wrecking crew tonight, I have no idea why anybody is still trying to pitch to him, i think that’s 3 home runs for him in one night, which is just ridiculous.
8 run rally to break their hearts!
Maybe the Beavs can hold them to less than 11 tonite…
Carter Bell with the solo shot. Only 6 runs to go!
At least that homer shut up Jed and Ellie May for a second.
right down the pipe andrew, right down the fuckin’ pipe! don’t worry, though, beav 20 says you’re gonna come around.
Hahaha
I think we need to hope that Vandy wins the CWS. We’ll look better then.
Maybe the Beavs would ‘look’ better, but I’d rather swallow razor blades then root for these bitches to win.
Vanderbilt’s team looks pretty good. Their fans, on the other hand, are lousy.
they are good, this was supposed to happen. getting swept by UO hurts much more than this, esp. to someone like me who got my Masters there and has to hear from all my UO friends, including a certain hall of fame Charger QB who was my city league basketball and softball team mate when he was an undergrad there. This hurts, but not nearly as much as losing 4 of 5 to UO. Not to mention football and basketball. just awful.
Tell Dan Fouts to post here…I have some good interception jokes I’ve wanted to try out.
I agree with you, I live in the Eugene area and have had to put up with quacking all year.
You’re gonna hear it all summer. We beat them in exactly 1 men’s game all year, the 1st baseball game.
The ironic thing is that I doubt many of their players are even from Tennesee and the cornholes that root for them have maybe a third of the IQ of the players. I could hear one idiot screaming “pick him off first” over and over and the Beaver on first hardly even had a lead.
Come on Beavers, 6 runs is nothing!
Well, the craziest rallies always start with a small single or walk so the first part’s done. =)
Well, dodged the 11+ run blowout.
And the come back begins…
That’s the third time I remember Keyes doing that.
Swinging at a ball that hits him? lol
Yes. If you throw it at his knee he’s always gonna swing the bat. Makes no sense.
We blew it in Game 3 at Washington. Pac-10 title and hosting a Super Regional. Been a good year, but we all really wanted to be in the CWS ths year and open up the new Omaha Stadium. Going to have to come back stronger next year. See you all then for Beavers Baseball.
I hate the dog pile after making the CWS. That’s not a reason to go crazy with a celebration. It should only happen when you win a national title. The goal is to win a national title not just make the CWS.
I could even understand a late game rally/come back win, but a game that was essentially in hand the whole night?
I wasn’t even able to watch either game, though I listened to Friday night’s until the fourth inning. Very odd series from OSU’s perspective, I think. Not at all what I expected. Fortunately for me, I wasn’t expecting OSU to win this weekend and so I’m not bummed that they lost. When I turned off the game on Friday, it was because the game was boring, not frustrating.
The team did better than I expected to, and I’m glad for that. They had good opportunities to do even better, and didn’t sieze them. Regardless, this season leaves me with a good feeling. And depending on who decides to return from the draft, next season should be even better. I like what a lot of the freshmen showed they’re capable of.
Thanks for the great discussions, everybody. I’ll see you when basketball starts again.
Can’t blame you for passing on football but basketball with Craig doesn’t look all that promising either.
Heh. It’s actually that I don’t enjoy watching football much anymore. It’s hard for me to look past the brain injuries. I’ll probably still watch the Civil War and if OSU goes to a good bowl game, I’ll watch that too.
Discussions here added to my enjoyment (?) of a frustrating, yet engaging young group. Thanks everybody.
This is one of those situations in which it sucks to be right.
And yet you were, kudos.
So, Omaha is going to be invaded by southern inbreeding not seen since the civil war…not only will I likeley not attend, but I may not even watch if there is not one team from the west. Maybe it is best if the Missouri floods the downtown area.
I think Cal advances today, so there will be one west team for sure. ASU can also advance today. Other than those two the rest would be southern schools(throwing UVA in there). If Mississippi State advances can you imagine all the inbreds at a possible Vandy-MSU game?
can you imagine all the inbreds at a possible Vandy-MSU game?
You know that game 6 degrees of separation?
It would be like that only with 5 fewer degrees.
Made the ESPN front page headlines list, in a bad way…
