Watched most of the Wisconsin/UNLV game last week. Wilson tore apart UNLV’s defense with pocket passing plays and rarely had to show off his mobile abilities. That is something that really worries me. He is known as a mobile quarterback from his days at NC State. Against UNLV, he showed that he’s a hell of a pocket passer too. On the handful of occasions where he was forced to run, he ran circles around the UNLV defense for large gains. It’s going to be a long day tomorrow and I wouldn’t be surprised if Wilson is battling it out with Andrew Luck this year as Heisman frontrunners. God what awful luck the Beavs have with non-conference games. Why couldn’t Wilson go curb stomp an ex-marine in a parking lot last week?
I didn’t see much from Wilson except for some great wheels. UNLV’s line never got near him, and still half his passes were just dumps to the RB’s or TE. Those that went down field were not great and off target about half the time. I’m not saying he doesn’t get his timing down with his WR’s this week. But he certainly didn’t show that last week.
Anyone know why Wilson just didn’t play four years at NCst? Was he unhappy with the program or something?
He was drafted by the Rockies.
But in theory, he could have taken graduate classes at NCst and rejoined his old team if that is what he had wanted, right? Yes, I am implying that he went “championship hunting”. but as Seinfeld says “not that there is anything wrong with that”.

i think he’s spot on.
Mr. 9000 or whatever, anyone with a past of playing athletics at a high level could easily see during the 28 years that we simply didn’t have the athletes. Pretty hard to” Show up” and give a good account of yourself when you have totally inferior talent. These teams that have received an ass-kicking under Riley these past few years have had much better talent. What games were you watching during those 28 years, were you actually observing the talent level back then. or what little of it there was? Please, lose the know-it-all attitude. Oh well, at least I can relax tomorrow. If we lose by a field goal or lose by 35, I know I can hold my head high because there is no such thing as humiliation as long as a team who thrashes you is highly-ranked. BTW, I attended every game during the 28, home and away(how many did you see?) I know many players and coaches from that era and they all say the same thing–“We simply did not have enough D-1 level players>” Go Beavers!!
I’ve heard that the reason we didn’t have very many D-1 quality players was because Dee Andros and perceived racism in the program. Does anybody have any info on that?

Dee and wife Louella were closet racists. My brother had a small painting company after he finished grad school back east and he and his employees have many stories of revealing conversations with the couple plus other conversations between Dee and wife they could hear through open windows while they were outside painting. Let’s just say James and Jacquizz would have been appalled.

Might as well come clean and let you guys know about the legendary Slats. This same brother was Slat’s regular caddie in the late 50’s/early 60’s. Lots of people let their guard down, have a few and express their true feelings in the semi-privacy of a foursome of friends on the course. It’s no coincidence that Norm Monroe was the 1st black bball player but not until 1964, and that’s because he was there on a track scholarship. Hell of a quarter-miler. Slats, however, was far from the only one. How many black players did you see at major colleges in the 50’s. Corvallis in the 50’s was your typical lilly-white small town. The few blacks at OSC then were pretty much regarded as novelties. People had never been exposed to them before. Anyway, my brother was privy to some interesting conversations at Corvallis Country Club.
if you ever want to get out all these stories email me. Would love to hear them. And it’s a shame when history like this isn’t passed down/shared. Wikipedia and SI don’t do the OSU racism story justice.

Oregon itself… we could market “weird and wonderful”. And it would explain away each and every season.
Word on the street is that Katz will strictly be running the Wildcat offense and 10 plays at that. I guess he was throwing a big fit after the game about not coming back in. The sentiment I am hearing is that the team was behind before the game and now not so much. Unless Mannion stinks it up, look for Katz in the wildcat mostly.
Katz in the wildcat? with no experienced ball carrier? that doesn’t make sense…what street are you hearing this from?
Hopefully it’s a case where they’ve been on the wrong side of the street. Hopefully.

I hope those rumors are wrong. But if it is true that Katz “was throwing a big fit after the game about not coming back in”, then Katz’s days as an effective team leader are over, and it’s already Mannion’s team….
And not to be overly negative, but if Katz truly loses his job, how could he not consider transfering with his talent?
Transferring as a senior isn’t likely a good option for him.

I hope the new trainer can earn her keep and get Agnew healthy. Hamstrings can be difficult and can plague a career indefinitely. Although if Riley is going to continue to run him 33 times a game that is probably an impossible task!

I’m getting old and the memory is failing me so I could be wrong on this – – – but I don’t recall Riley ever doing a lot of substituting at RB or QB once he settled on who his #1 was. Lack of talent so he couldn’t do it or lack of flexibility on his part OR lack of grey cells on my part?
You are right. Angry had a thread about this in the past. I remember Erickson being more willing to pull Simonton for a series and give carries to someone like McCall, but maybe it was talent?
if you were a coach, why would you ever not want to keep someone as good as quizz (especially since he never fumbled) on the field? and same with steven jackson, because he’s steven freaking jackson.

In his first season coaching didn’t riley pull alexander after several games starting? I thought that’s when Smith was inserted as a starter? Or was that an injury situation? Either way, Alexander finished the season as a wide receiver and Smith finished the season a legend…..
Tim Alexander was moved to WR I believe in 97, possibly 98. He was an option QB. Terrance Bryant was the starting QB in 98 and Jonathon Smith relieved him in the first half against Washington and led Oregon State on a comeback and they lost by 1 on a two point conversion. Sound familiar? As we know after that Washington Jonathon Smith was the permanent starter and the rest is history.
Forgot about Bryant. He was pretty forgettable. Was that the game where Smith lost a shoe and still chucked it down field while falling back for a huge 3rd down play? God I wish they had youtube back then.
One curious similarity is that Bryant, like Katz, had a rocket of an arm. He could launch the ball 60 yards off his back foot- of course he overthrew his receiver 9 out 10 times and was a poor decision maker which does sound a bit like Katz. Maybe this QB controversy could be a Jonathan Smith type season changing event. Of course we didn’t go to a bowl that year- but we did beat the ducks.
I think it was a Bryant led team I saw barely beat Utah St. in Logan. That means poor Smith was standing on the sideline in the freezing cold waiting for his chance.
Yes, Bryant started the game. As soon as Jonathan Smith took over the offense looked great.
I was saying that a few threads ago that it makes sense to run Katz now that we are not as concerned about him getting injured. To me the fact that there is even a competition means Mannion is the guy. Plus I am sure the way in which this is getting handled that there is more going on that Riley is holding back. Katz better get it together because he is not talented enough to start at the NFL level and teams don’t want back-ups that throw fits. Should be an interesting game even if it isn’t close with so many unanswered questions.

Watching ASU/Mizzu, it just amazes me how teams make the game look effortless, yet with the Beavs everything is so difficult, and it never looks “right” or pretty. Even when the Beavs are good they don’t look the part. It’s odd.

Good news is you can pass on ASU. Bad news for us is ASU can pass play.
ASU will play shootouts every single week. Offense is good and defense has been really overrated. Not a great recipe for success but the South is a weak division so they may just win it.
The D looks pretty good to me, sans the excessive personal fouls.

I’m not sure what you’re seeing, either. Missouri has only passed for 230 yards. I’d say that is good defense, considering the Tigers are the #21 team who over the past five years have had a prolific passing attack.
A lot of those completed 20 passes so far from Franklin were to wide open guys.
that defense is athletic as hell, but you can still beat them with discipline and intelligence. but is OSU capable of doing either at this point?
Wow, the refs in this ASU game have shown the mistake in Banker DB technique.
The dbs can practically rape the reciever if they turn their head first. Fail to turn to look, and a db gets nailed for PI with almost zero contact. Free the DB 4

Given the open nature of this thread, I’ll take the “Larry-King-in-USA-Today” approach:
From the pocket or on the move, Wilson’s going to make it look easy tomorrow…so are Wisconsin’s running backs…Its getting old seeing other teams use black better than the Beavs – especially when those teams don’t even have black as their main color…can Cam Collins and Lance Mitchell keep from getting hurt tackling those Wisconsin running backs who’ll have several yards of steam?…I’ll bet Wisconsin is really emphasizing to its WRs not to reach for the ball or change the size of their eyes when its coming their way – makes it even easier to catch against the “no look” OSU dbs…..speaking of which, does anyone expect Rashaad Reynolds to provide run support against the Badgers?!?….it must really hurt OSU to come home from these non-conference losses and have to fly into the airport at Eugene, home of their CW rival Ducks….Ryan Katz in the read option for 10 snaps – is that supposed to confuse the Badgers?…Poyer out of the “WildBeaver” sounds like more of a threat to me….Where was Obum last week – how does a guy that tall not standout against a I-AA team?….I love the effort of Wynn and Chricton, but will they have anything in the tank by the end of the third?….Does Riley ever think about the effects of these nationally televised blowouts on his team?…I’d like to see a pitch or two to McCants – maybe out of the same set they used when they put James Rodgers in at tailback against UW in Seattle a few years back….Oklahoma got a lot more out of its lateral throws against UA than the Beavers did against Sac State – what gives?…I wonder if Banker will completly lose the confidence of his D by about 10:30 am tomorrow? I just got back from the American Fisheries Society national conference in Seattle Washington – at least OSU’s still carrying the rep in fisheries science.
I suspect the players will welcome the break more than even the fans.
Wow MIZZOU is the James Franklin show. They are going to be just like Michigan was last year with their fast QB, use him 50+ touches a game until he gets hurt, then what? Not everyone has Tebow like ability to not get hurt.
This Missouri offense looks like a well-oiled machine, and the QB is only in his second start. Just adds to my Beaver fan frustration.
I share your frustration with this QB’s early success and this is what kills me about good college football coaching and what Riley and staff do to the contrary; good coaching makes the game simple for your team, difficult for the opposition. At TCU, Patterson simplifies the game for his D, but conversely makes it challenging for the opposing team’s offense. At UO, Kelly makes the offense simple for his pot-smokers, challenging for Mark Banker.
Patterson divides the field up, and what the front four do is largely independent of the back seven from what I’ve read. Further, the DB’s break the field down and might play zone on one side, man on the other, all of which combined is confusing for opposing QB’s, especially when the TCU defensive units can then just play freely and with speed.
Riley’s offense is notoriously difficult to learn for his own young qb’s to learn, but we’re supposed to believe this is a good thing because it means a sun bowl every 4 years. Banker apparently can’t get his boys to understand how to get in correct position to implement his scheme, but Sac-State knows how to take advantage of it.
The beauty of good teaching (coaching) is putting in the effort up front to make the complex easy to understand. It does not take brillance to make something appear complicated.
OSU’s approach is the antithesis of good college coaching. You have young kids who might get 2-3 years to apply your system as starters or backups – WHY MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO IMPLEMENT?
Who gives a shit if you’re preparing them for the pros or not? You want them to win while they’re in college.
Right, it’s all about risk/reward. What is the reward for learning such a complex offense? If there was some fantastic payoff (i.e. an offense so unstoppable they were guaranteed a Rose Bowl) at the end of line I could see it being worthwhile, but the payoff for Beaver teams who do grasp this offense if this: the Sun Bowl, and an offense that is as effective as much simpler offenses.

ASU just beat MISSOURI (ranked 21) in overtime.
As per normal Erickson teams, there were over 100 yards of penalties. But it is evidence at this point in the season that a fresh coaching staff for a coach on the hot seat can make a difference.
Also, it indicates how OSU missed their time. We are leaving a period when UW, ASU, USC are/will be emerging from down times (it is undecided what UCLA will do this season). One problem of course is for two years OSU may have made it to the Rose Bowl but UO was cheating. But we can’t reconcile the past….
I like that fly sweep motion / swing pass ASU used… Why can’t we do anything but run, run, pass, punt?

I watched Isaac Seumalo play last night in the local rivalry game between the two Corvallis high schools. At 6’3″ and 280, Seumalo had a size and strength advantage. As the son of a college line coach, Seumalo also displayed excellent technique. No surprise that Seumalo looked dominant last night. Still good to see. Looking forward to Seumalo playing for the Beavs next year….
