I've written him emails, but have not received any responses.
I haven't seen a single quote in any newspaper or media outlet in months. Just to make sure this isn't an oversight or error on my end, I typed "Bob Decarolis" into Google News…nothing…
In this, the biggest crisis in modern OSU athletics, our athletic director has disappeared. Something to think about before making your next donation.
#Occupy Reser?
Bobby D has taken the high-road as far as giving any attention to athletics and keeping fans in the dark. Is it coincidental that he removed fan asked questions from post-game show? Yeah, he’s the one that needs fired.
How do you know he’s the person who removed the post-game show? Not saying you’re wrong, just curious…
I figure it’s BDC because he usually runs the shows.
…Or Riley could have chicken shitted out of it. Who knows at this point, all I know is that one of them is chicken shit.
A little off topic, but Canzano must read this blog. He just floated Nigel Burton’s name out there as future replacement for Riley on his TV show. Canzano says he does not see Riley lasting until 2019 and if Burton has a couple more years of success at PSU, the administration i.e BDC should go after him. Beavers running the pistol?
Does Burton excite you as a fan?
Feels too similar/close to Riley for my liking. I want an entirely new direction.
Not really, but who knows, great head coaches have to start somewhere. Riley is not going anywhere is he? So, by the time he finally “retires”, we have no clue who will be available anyway. My question is can Riley survive a third losing season in a row?
Maybe going to the top would work?
I think emailing the OSU President Ed Ray might be more effective.

No Burton. OSU needs more.
We need Mike Leach or Jonathan Smith, preferably Mike Leach :D
Leach is a fantasy and we all know it. He will be long gone before the administration figures out what to do with Riley. Leach is still a bit of a pariah, but he is desparate to get back to coaching. One rumour out there is that he would even replace Howard Schellenberg at Florida Atlantic. I bet Maryland wishes they had gone with him instead of Randy Edsel.
I know, but I can always dream … all I know is we can do better than Burton.
Leach will never be hired until he drops his lawsuit. It doesn’t matter if he’s in the right. Nobody is going to talk a board of regents into hiring someone who sues their former employers.
I like Paul Chryst from Wisconsin, or Kevin Sumlin from Houston, or Bronco Mendenhall from BYU.
No Mendenhall. I like the other two. I also like the thought of bringing Troy Calhoun or Bryan Harsin back to Oregon/the NW. Al Borges and Bud Foster are always mentioned this time of year. I would lend an ear to hear a case for Paul Petrino. But the Petrino name stands for scum-sucking pig-coward in my mind. Maybe one brother is decent and shouldn’t pay for the sins of his scum-sucking pig-coward of a brother.
Have I mentioned lately what I think of Lynn Snyder?
Please, not Paul Petrino.
Berny sends you love and kisses.
Sumlin would be as they say a “Home run hire”. He would be the perfect hire. Dude is everything Riley is not. He is one of, if not the best offensive mind out there. With his connections in Texas and the south, since being an OC at Texas A&M, Oklahoma and TE coach, as well as head coach of Houston, he would be able to get a lot more kids from the south. I believe he would debunk the myth that ” You can’t recruit kids to Corvallis”. He has proven he can win games on the road in the nonconference and start season’s fast in general. That’s something I’m sure we all want badly. He would have the Beavers competing for Pac-12 titles every year.
Unfortunately, the earliest Riley will be fired is after the 2012 season but more likely it would happen after the 2013 season. Sumlin will be hired by some big time program by then and will be doing some big things. Meanwhile, the Beavers will continue to be horrible. Oh joy.
I don’t know about Paul Chryst. His system works at Wisconsin because they have a dominant O-line.
I remember Paul Chryst was a successful offensive coordinator for OSU in 2003 & 2004. OSU averaged above 30 points per game with his offenses. You are right, that having a dominant O-Line at Wisconsin is allowing his abilities, and true potential to be displayed. I know Mike Riley and Paul Chryst are very good friends. I also think Mike Sanford (another good friend of Mike Riley) could be a realistic candidate for OSU’s new offensive coordinator. Remember OSU had trouble defending his offenses at Louisville, UNLV, and he was Urban Meyer’s O.C. at Utah.
I don’t belive Leach is a fantasy. I think he would be excited to be the in-state rival to Oregon and get Pac-12 level exposure. The issue right now is that we should be tossing out Riley to get who we need this offseason if the right guy is available. I imagine BDC is too cowardly for that. So we wait one year and odds are still that Riley won’t win more than 5 games next year. That is the odds on bet and that situation does not help us and puts us in a harder position to get our best next coach if the available list is not as strong. Even best case next year and we go 6-6, could actually be worst case because then we may be stuck in mediocrity for even longer.
Canzano acted like he thinks Riley could be down to his last year or two. For OSU’s sake I hope he is right. But the main thing is we need a confident winner as our next coach. Leach would be that guy. I would rather get Leach now, let Riley be OC for a year or two in an arranged deal and then phase him out. Doing something like that and being procative to get our man is what we need. If Riley passes then negotiate a buyout. If he cares about OSU he will make it affordable so we can take the next step forward as a program.
Oh, I’m sure Leach would listen to an offer from OSU with great interest, but it is a fantasy to think that BDC is going to do anything to make that happen. Anyway, if we want to fantasize, it would make more sense to fire Langsdorf and bring Leach in as OC/HC in waiting with Riley announcing that he was resigning at the end of the 2012 season. Like JackBeav mentioned, no BCS school is going to touch Leach until his legal issues are history.
Doesn’t BDC have a disease? When is his current contract up? And I thought I read a quote from BDC that Riley is the next Paterno. How old is Joe, about 200. Now hi pathetically speaking, if Riley wants to stay as long as Joe and he gets to 6-6 or 7-5 2012 through 2018, then he would have until 2026. I haven’t heard if OSU built in any protections for themselves, like 3 losing seasons and your out. But I guess if there was a losing provision Riley and Banker would not have anything to laugh at during games.
I more I think about his contract the more pissed off I get. Riley gets an extra year no matter what bowl game they make? So he could be rewarded for a 6-7 season if I understand the terms correctly.
Correct, any bowl game.
I sure hope Riley isn’t the next Paterno. I haven’t been thrilled with Riley’s work lately, but I certainly don’t think he’ll ever stoop so low as being a child rapist enabler.
Burton has done more than Riley this year! He fucking beat SAC st.!! I don’t think PSU would take a trade at this point! Our coaches suck and the cubbard is bare talent wise. We may be headed back to the 90s here. We can all thank Colorado for coming in this year and sparing us from being the league doormat. I can’t think of one single good thing going on in the program right now.
Serious question: when was the last time Bob D responded to you and/or you saw him in public and/or you read a Bob D quote in the paper? Last I saw he existed was when he was diagnosed with parkinson’s. That must have been four months ago? Haven’t heard a peep since the season started. Gman says he runs some post-game show…I never listen to post-game shows. In that case, maybe he was seen more recently? I mean, most ADs would give out a confidence vote at the very least. Just wait until Craig Robinson starts losing to D2 teams…fans are going to go ballistic. Bob D needs to address the major men’s sports now.
he used to be pretty visible during football/basketball games. this year im pretty certain he hasnt been on the sideline once. ive come to the conclusion on my own that his health is worse than being let on. its bizarre. nobody in the media seems to even mention him, like they forgot who the athletic director even is. what about the basketball exhibition friday? did anybody see hime there?
slam, you are on the right track. DeCarolis must have a more serious condition than is being let on. Not long ago he was pretty vocal, see:
blog.oregonlive.com/behindbeaversbeat/2007/11/de_carolis_wants_that_replay_c.html
In the instance cited he was calling out the zebras as Mike Riley should have and seldom does.
At one point I felt Pat Casey should be the next AD, now I have the crazy notion that maybe moving Riley up is the only way to open up the head coaching position. Riley may be political enough to be AD.
Anyway, I expect MR to continue to be the HC next season and it is possible with a change in assistants and the talent now developing that he could come up with as much as 9 wins. He’ll have to change his energy level to do it, a tall order.
He’s at every game. Also, if you watch Beaver’s all access each week he answers a question from a fan. It’s of course not a hard hitting question, just fluff crap. He’s also on the Joe Beaver Radio show once a week with Mike Parker. He’s out there, he’s not hidding.
He’s not e-mailing you back? He’s the AD, and now your one of probably hundreds of fans e-mailing to complain. He’s not going to answer you all back. Nor should he.
fair enough, but the point remains. spending two and a half minutes on some shitty show that recaps stuff any beaver fan already knows and a weekly spot on a radio show doesent indicate hands on day to day involvement. why cant non biased media outlets get ahold of him then?
Saw at halftime of the Arizona game walking out of the stadium. I said hi to him and shook his hand very quickly. very cordial.
The only thing I have read lately that even implies that he exists was that the Oregonian mentioned that he and Riley meet once a week.. Before that, they ran the story about him being diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
Did he even comment on last years basketball team? All reasons and excuses aside a 20 loss season is a significant negative benchmark for any D-1 team and deserved some comments from the AD. Maybe I missed them?
Paul Chryst would be great i think, not just because of his offense, but the new approaches he could bring from his time in other programs and conferences.
Chryst is also more in line with this conservative atheletic administration, but still a likely upgrade.
Isn’t he from Madison? I don’t think he’d leave.
I like the Sumlin idea. I’d also be stoked about the entire Air Force staff. Those guys prepare well.
Then OSU could play some heavy hubert sumlin blues guitar when coach sumlin and team take the field…
A Howlin’ Wolf reference!
Cool!
Beavers had the blues for 28 years.
If OSU went after Calhoun, they could justify it by stating, “We know he’s not from Linfield, but he is from McMinnville.”
Chryst won’t leave UW. There was a big article two months ago talking about how he loved the job and how many head coaching and OC jobs in college and the NFL he has turned down. He’s a family man and is happy with where he is at – and very successful too.
Does anyone know what the buyout is on Riley’s contract? This has to be a consideration in whether he is let go. Someone has to make a big contribution to put up enough money for that – the athletic dept can’t afford it. Ideally he would retire or move up to AD.
Give Riley at least another year. Let him make the necessary changes for next year.
I don’t see what is so great about Chryst. I mean for the talent Wisconsin has and the schedule they play they are underachievers.
Hello…Hello!!! Maybe I’ve been too subtle, but my hat is in the ring. I’m rested, ready and I know lots of really cool football stuff.
I’ve been a close observer of OSU for many years. I know how to leverage the strengths and minimize the numerous weaknesses. JB
PS: On the radio now …Jim Rome now discussing JackBeav…. OSU’s team toool.
PPS: JackBeav thank you for the spelling tips. Per your suggestion I’ve added an extra “o” to tool. Does that make you a bigger tool? ding
Hey Jerry,
You may be the tool, unless you can explain how your are going to “re-tool” this team for success. You sound more like a politician than a football coach with your “I’m ready” cliches. Let’s hear your plan!
You tried your “bone” once before and in the end it was your offense in the pass happy Pac-10 that let you down. Granted, you had a much better DC than the team has now. Come one, let’s hear a little more detail as to why you deserve a second chance.
I am interested in seeing Riley’s contract. I know they are public record but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Riley seems like he’s going insane, he does the same thing expecting different results.
If Bob D is so ill that he can’t do his job, he needs to resign. That is just common sense, and best for him and fans. He also needs to come out and tell people if that’s the case. We just saw Steve jobs do this at Apple a few months ago…basically, “I am too ill to do my job, bye.”
I mean, I wish him all the best with his health, but life must go on, and there’s a job to be done here.
I think it’s more that he’s embarrassed for giving Riley the lifetime contract, and he doesn’t want to field those questions…(thing is, the Oregon media wouldn’t even ask about it). It’s easy to understand why someone would hide in a cave after doing something so embarrassing.
I guess Riley was a hot commodity at the time with USC sniffing around, so BDC probably felt like he needed to lock him in since he left once before. I think the AD does have some responsibility to understand recruiting trends with the football program since it’s the biggest revenue generator, but I doubt he understood the OL/DL/LB’s drop off and how it would impact game results..
I understood why he did it, and a 3 or 4 year contract would have been fine, but what Bob D did has to go down as one of the worst contract negations ever. He gave a lifetime deal to a coach who didn’t want to go anywhere and openly admitted so.
It’s like theater of the absurd.
Does anyone know the exact buyout amount? When P-12 TV money starts coming in, I would hope it would not be such a huge factor.
Cliff says it is 8 million.
Not only was Nutt fired at Ole Miss but the AD is gone too. Sometimes the AD and coach are too tight a pair and it is best for both to go. Many parallels to OSU.
http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/2011/11/7/2544476/pete-boone-ole-miss-athletic-director/in/2221935
I read before Nutt’s buyout was 6 million. Not sure if he gets all that if fired. That figure was from an article last week saying it was worth it to be done with him. 8 isn’t so far past 6 that we should ignore getting a confident winner as our next coach sooner rather than later. I think Casey should move into AD after his final baseball year and BDC should focus on his health. New energy=better results IMO. Casey has the right qualities to be a good AD and get us on a better trajectory. He will expect OSU to compete well in the major sports.
Houston Nutt fired after this season
Looks like Florida Atlantic and Tulane are talking to Mike Leach. I could see him going to a non-BCS conference for a couple of years, clearing his legal issues, getting some success and moving up. Maybe at about the same time another MIke moves on?
Because its clear other media monitor this site, this site should have a post that develops a focused list of coaching candidates. The list should include potential coaches/staffs that would be motivated to come to OSU and that have demonstrated progressiveness, and provide rationale why/why not a candidate is viable (e.g. I like the reminder that Chryst is from Wisconsin..etc.). Leach and Sumlin are great examples, I like the idea of at least some of the Air Force staff (defensive coordinator would be a great upgrade). No “Urban Meyer!” etc….(not that I’ve seen that here, but you know what I mean).
This post is kind of evolving into a coaching candidates discussion, but I think a dedicated topic would be great. Its clear from reading O-live, and even some ESPN, that others get ideas from here and propagate them. Remember ESPN talking about the “prisoner’s dilemma” in the emerging UO scandal? How about Buker asking if OSU should move to an “Air Raid” offense? They got those ideas here.
If this site develops a good list of candidates, others at O-live and elsewhere will start floating them, and the rationale, too.
I think Canzano got the Nigel Burton idea from the poster that brought his name up here even though most of us don’t think it’s a great idea.
D.J. Foster (likely a future Duck) ran for 500 yards and 10TDs on Friday…
It should be fun when Banker goes up against him…
Are you kidding?
I wish…I saw this while checking email.
http://highschool.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1289730
He looks nothing like Eric Dickerson. What’s that comment about?
Now, if he would have said LaDainian Tomlinson, he would be close.
You’re not:
http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1289730
I imagine the UO RB’s wish the field was about 250 yards long for the CW….
LMJ – 15 carries, 568 yards…
Kenyon Barner – 12 carries 438 yards…..
You get the idea…
They could just run a relay with the Beaver linebackers chasing them. How soon do you think it would take for LMJ and KB to lap them?
Don’t forget de’Anthony Thomas…he’s the fastest and imo most talented of them all.
Did you see that kickoff return he had against the Huskies? It was called back because of holding, but his acceleration was “otherworldly”. It was like the Sega video games when a character received extra energy and just bursts out!
How the *ucks stole DeAnthony Thomas away from USC in the midnight hour before signing day is questionable and “should” be investigated. He was a solid USC commit forever, then at the last second he signed with the *ucks. Probably for their outstanding academics, obviously. *sarcasm. Also, makes you wonder if the *ucks cheerleaders do any other “extra curricular” activities for the incoming (no pun intended) recruits?
DAT’s defection isn’t so mysterious once the conspiratorial angle is dismissed.
USC wanted him to play CB. Oregon said come and be a triple threat on offense.
Were DAT playing for USC, he’d at best be doing some special teams or packaged receiving plays. At worst, he’d be redshirted.
The way that he’s become one of Chip’s favorite weapons screams that he made the correct choice.
Something that went unnoticed on Friday:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/baseball/mlb/wires/11/04/2060.ap.bbc.arizona.st.ncaa.0184/?xid=shareFB
ASU loves their frosh K too.
And they should find out if Carson is allowed on the floor anytime this year… possibly today?
News on Carson will be announced tonight.
Even without Carson ASU went to Grand Canyon and spanked them in their new arena.
two things regarding future coaching candidates (ive tried to refrain from talking about this because i dont think any of it is relevant because riley isnt going anywhere, but i cant help it.)
first- les miles is about as likely to be the beavers next head coach as mike leach. its never. gonna. happen. second- isnt rocky long still at san diego state? he would seem like an obvious candidate for a number of reasons to me
You apparently didn’t see SDSU vs Wyoming.
Who are some offensive coordinators that you would either like to see, or could potentially see coaching the offense at OSU? Does anyone know who Mike Riley would/could go after?
*Note, not head coach. “Offensive Coordinator”
Here are some names that come up in the conversation:
Paul Chryst, Mike Sanford, Nigel Burton or any other names?
Nigel Burton is a defensive coach.
I do think he would make a solid recruiter for sure. Don’t sleep on Burton. He’s taken PSU out of the Big Sky cellar and turned them into one of the top teams in that conference, all while losing his nationally leading scorer at tailback for the season.
When you say “Mike Riley would/could go after” you gotta include Jonathan Smith.
As I have said before, maybe a couple years as QB coach then move to OC, meanwhile Locey or Riley to cover the OC spot. Anything is likely to be better than Langs.
Isn’t Josh Wilcox an OC for Boise?
Josh Wilcox is a professional wrestler I think, his brother Justin Wilcox was the defensive coordinator at Boise State, but is currently the defensive coordinator at Tennessee.
What about Brian Wright from Montana State? Montana State is ranked #2 in the FCS right now. Here is how Montana State ranks in the FCS this season:
Total Offense: (6th) 459.40 yards per game. Scoring Offense (6th) 36.6 points per game.
http://www.msubobcats.com/coaches.aspx?rc=131&path=football
I’m just tring to brainstorm, and trying to remain realistic. What do you all think?
So… is it too early to just bag the season and talk recruiting?
Yes, it is too early to bag the season. IMHO.
To early. don’t expect team results, but watch for individuals who will develop, become leaders next year (poyer) and who won’t adopt a losing mentality.
I would have to go with a yes and no answer. Yes, because they are having another catastrophic season, with little to no improvement. No, because they haven’t played the *ucks yet. I would love nothing more than to beat the team down south, especially after the season we are having. I know some, ok, most of you will say that’s never going to happen, or keep dreaming. So, maybe I’m dreaming, but I really want this dream to come true! The Beavers could really use a monumental win, and beating the team down south would do it. My (only) fear is that, by beating them, it just might save Langsdorf from moving on.
Anyone who doesnt bag this season is in for some bad moments. What is really depressing is the lack of involvement in even the game going on at the moment. That time at the end of the half when we might have got a field goal, but the coaches just screwed up the time management, shows they dont even get into the game at hand. The players must feel really bad, as I expect they have the youthful enthusiasm that would go beyond the attitude of their coaches and actually want to win.
Recall the excitement of having Erickson as a coach. We need a change…. SOMEHOW.
Oh yes, the excitement of Erickson. Bringing in juco rent a players who don’t have to go to class and drop out as soon as the season is over. And being ranked preseason #1, only to get smacked upside our head by fresno state in the first game of the season. I guess id rather have those problems and the occasional BCS bowl rather than our current situation, but really, neither is a good longterm plan.
I agree, wholeheartedly here. A coaching change may only be a part of the issue. There has to be a commitment by the administration to support better facilities, support staff, etc. UO has some of the best facilities for training, weights, rehab, etc. They also have great support staff. This is expensive, but yields on the field results.. IE fewer injuries, coming back faster(Look at LMJ’s recovery as example number one). I am not in support of turning this program into a JUCO rehab facility. I think OSU is better than that. I also think you can compete on a national scale without that if you have the proper support infrastructure in place. Everything from scouts to travel budget make a huge difference. I can assure everyone here that replacing the coach without some or all of the commitments above will do nothing to improve the programs long term future.
Riley is officially #5 now on the hottest seat list. These are the worst of the worst.
http://www.coacheshotseat.com/CoachesHotSeatRanking.htm
I have this feeling that despite their inept coaches, the Beaver players actually learned a lot this last weekend. They gave Stanford all that they wanted for 2 and a half quarters and they will come out this weekend and put a hurting on Cal.
The clueless media will then say how great at developing players Riley and Co. are and blah blah does more with less blah blah lots of injuries blah blah inexperienced.
Thats why I say it is too early to bag the season. Watching these young guys develop (with or without help from the coaches) is reason enough to stay connected. My only concern is whether or not guys like Poyer can keep the team enthusiasm up for all three remaining games.
Just seeing replay of 2nd QTR of UO @ UW, clear helmet-to-helmet hit on Price at goal line ,no call, only debate about whether pr not its a TD.
How many “illegal” hits were there in the LSU vs Alabama game??? Pac10 and now Pac12 refs are pathetic.
OT, Paterno and company need to be fired. Thier moral compass must be 180* off. 10yr is molested and law enforcement is not called? I guess they must not have kids of thier own… WTF is wrong with people!?
Paterno is no worse than that sick pedophile of an athletic director.
Looks like Paterno is on his way out.
So even if Riley did get canned the big vacancy will be Penn St. OSU would be stuck with the scraps as usual.
Kind of interesting to see we have offered a scholarship to a kicker… Riley in the past has he only likes to have 1 scholarship per kicker position. Seems like they don’t have much faith in Romaine. If we could find an accurate kicker that might make a good combo with Romaine as the KOS and 50+ yard kicker.
Junior CB Jordan Poyer is second in the country in pass breakups with 15. He’s closing in on school record of 19 held by Andrae Holland (1999).
Wow. If only we had 4 of him…
