What I love so far is the ball pressure and the Beavers aren’t allowing any easy passes. They’ve got their hands on so many passes. Really love the effort on defense.
He has 2 fouls. Why risk getting a 3rd foul and taking away his aggressiveness in the second half for fear of picking up another foul? The decision by Craig was smart.
We’re getting killed whenever they run a Pick and Roll, and we’ve turned the ball over a few too many times, but the team is otherwise running smoothly.
I wish Roberto would be more active in the offense though; either he plays too passively, or other people are trying too hard(Starks).
I don’t know what to think about Nelson right now. He seems like he’s not really sure what he’s supposed to do when he’s out there. Granted I’m no basketball analysts, but it seems to me whenever he’s out there he’s just kind of standing around waiting for someone to pass him the ball while everybody else is moving around. Maybe this type of stuff has to do with why he’s not starting?
It’s not that he’s just standing around, he tries to facilitate a lot. But we really need him to be more selfish and create shots. Right now, Starks is really the only one that will do that, and he’s just worse at it than Roberto.
He was on the team last year but hurt his elbow about 5 games into the season. He’s really talented. Only a redshirt freshman. Incredibly athletic, plays solid defense and is very versatile. He has both small forward and power forward skills. He can defend wings and big guys. In another year he will be REALLY good.
Roberto has an issue between the ears right now. He is overthinking everything. He needs to just play some ball and stop worrying about everything. He’s way too passive.
A lot to love in the first half. Offense is looking good. The pick and pop/roll defense needs to be improved. Some guys have been slow to close out on these plays. Once they get that corrected they’ll be pretty good defensively.
It’s easy to say Cal State isn’t any good… but remember last year we were battling and even losing to these types of teams in the beginning of the season. We’re doing what we are supposed to do against these type of opponents and that’s extremely encouraging.
Two years ago, a pretty mediocore Beaver team beat CS-Bak 73-39, so I don’t consider these guys even a decent mid-major, but you’re point is well taken, OSU lost to Utah Valley St. last year. There are better tests upsteam anyway.
That’s what makes Brandt frustrating. He’s capable of those type of plays a lot. He’s incredibly skilled. Once he stops overthinking things he plays some good ball. Would like to see more of that.
Beavers have lost their focus and are playing careless. If they hadn’t thrown really poor passes this one isn’t even close. Burton was playing so well but the last 3 minutes he’s played pretty badly.
Yeah, I understand that but I don’t understand why he’s taking so many of those shots. Stick to the rebounding and defense and leave the shooting to the guys who can shoot.
Aside from a bad 3 minute stretch Burton has played really well. I’ve seen a lot of important with him. He’s developed a little bit of an outside shot and his passing is much better. Not seeing those poor passes that have no chance like we’ve seen the previous two years. He’s also playing solid post defense. Very encouraging.
I’m not so sure about his substitutions. How good his decisions are will be more evident once OSU is playing Pac-12 quality teams. Against this team any and all substitutions look good.
That was pathetic. Their dline is living in our backfield already, and our classic “Need 7 yards, throw it 2 yards and pray the WR can do the rest” offense doesn’t work. As usual.
And then we settle for three(which we somehow made). Gonna be a long, bad game.
86-62 win. Too many turnovers and the pick and roll defense wasn’t too good but I think they’ll improve in both areas. They got the win and it wasn’t really close in this one. I saw a lot of improvements in key areas. Nice to see. They got West Alabama on Monday night. Looking forward to that one.
Yup. I think they can win 10-11 games in the nonconference. Next Wednesday I am a little nervous about Hofstra. They’re really underrated. That’s a good squad. They’ll test the Beavers. I think we’ll learn a little bit more about the Beavers in that game.
Went to the 1st half of the basketball game at Gill, then came home to watch the football game on TV.
Loved what I saw from Eric Moreland at Gill tonight. He needs to hit the weight room hard, and needs to put on 20-30 lbs of muscle. If Moreland does that, he can be a beast next year. But even as a beanpole he’s already a good rebounder and defender.
Challe Barton looked better than expected, too. He could be a good backup PG for Starks.
Roberto Nelson looks nervous out there — lacking confidence. Frequently looking over his shoulder at Coach Rob (either seeking approval after good plays, or waiting for the hook after bad ones…) The jump-pass turnovers are awful — those are high-school level mistakes that need to stop if Nelson expects to get lots of playing time this year.
More man-to-man defense, which is good to see. But the offense still looks stagnant for the most part — wish there was more movement, more hard cuts, less standing around on the perimeter.
I was struck by the standing around on offense, that’s not going to cut it against better teams. I know it’s early, but Nelson is a head scratcher. He continues to be a turnover machine, showing no real improvement in his decision making. Still no reason this team can’t get 10 wins in the non conference just with speed and athleticism and keep improving as they enter league play.
Wow no Roberto Nelson in the starting line up. What are the blue jerseys for?
They’re for their annual N7 game which is to honor Native Americans.
I believe the blue jerseys are for Burton (Native American representation).
Turquoise is important in some Native American cultures as I understand.
I thought I just saw Burton sink a 3. I must be hallucinating.
You did. Shot looked good. Maybe he’s added a shot now.
He has to add that shot if he wants to play at the next level.
Wow Starks is really shooting the ball well. Our defense is looking pretty impressive too.
Beavs look great so far.
Nice to see the Beavers knocking down their free throws early.
What I love so far is the ball pressure and the Beavers aren’t allowing any easy passes. They’ve got their hands on so many passes. Really love the effort on defense.
Beavs look vastly improved.
Also, we should just wear those uniforms at all time, they’re sick.
Moreland tried to steal a rebound from McShane, then airballed a FREE THROW. Sick.
AIR BALL! AIR BALL! arggg
Brandt isn’t going to be learning the American game if he’s on the bench.
He’s just getting some rest. You can’t play him all game.
CR sat him down as soon as he got his 2nd foul and that was a long time ago. imo
He has 2 fouls. Why risk getting a 3rd foul and taking away his aggressiveness in the second half for fear of picking up another foul? The decision by Craig was smart.
imo they don’t need Brandt in order to win. OSU should win by 20+. OSU subs are much better than the other teams 1st string. Brandt needs the minutes.
We’re getting killed whenever they run a Pick and Roll, and we’ve turned the ball over a few too many times, but the team is otherwise running smoothly.
I wish Roberto would be more active in the offense though; either he plays too passively, or other people are trying too hard(Starks).

Roberto has to be more selfish. He’s too passive. He’s too good of a player to just stand around and be passive on offense.
It’s not that he’s just standing around, he tries to facilitate a lot. But we really need him to be more selfish and create shots. Right now, Starks is really the only one that will do that, and he’s just worse at it than Roberto.
This cameraman is OBSESSED with showing every girl in the crowd.
He’s made some good choices though!
OT USC is dominating UW. Kind of nice since I think UW fans are some of the most obnoxious fans in the conference.
TOOOO many fricking cast off 3’s.
Be nice to see them gat a 20 point lead before halftime.
Who is Eric Mooreland? He is all over the boards.
I’m just listening to the stream while i do some homework, and have heard his name a lot already.
Our fullcourt man press, and occasional trap, is just wrecking them(although the trap doesn’t seem great, it’s working).
Roberto with the entry pass inside that was too flat and stolen. He really needs to be more aggressive, not just looking to pass all the time.
Announcer just said Beavers are winning the points in the paint 18-6. That’s so nice to see.
Roberto passed to Jared, and then did not even look back as Jared wanted to kick it back to him quickly. Exactly what I’m talking about.
At least he led that fast break nicely.
Fans need this…need the hoops team to be good.
McShane has been in, out and back in again, all the while Brandt sits. WTF?
Roberto has an issue between the ears right now. He is overthinking everything. He needs to just play some ball and stop worrying about everything. He’s way too passive.
Roberto penetrates, was met by one man near the paint, and Roberto jumps in the air and tries to pass it to the corner, easily stolen. Horrid play.
He REALLY needs to just be more aggressive. So many of these forced passes are TOs. But it looks like coach Rob subbed him immediately for it, good.
Anyone know if Cal St is supposed to be good?
I believe I heard the announcer say Cal St basketball doesn’t belong to a league.
They’re not supposed to be good. New coach, were 9-19 last year. They do have some decent players and some pretty good shooters.
Wasn’t this Barnes guy, the same one who coached at Mississippi?
Yup. Rod Barnes. Coached at Ole Miss for 8 years and Georgia State for 4 years.
Great pick and roll to end the half with Jared and Joe.
Why can’t we just run that, instead of our terrible “Pass around for 30 seconds, then turn it over because we pass too much” offense?
The three assistant coaches nearest coach Rob are all white. Ummm, seriously?
A lot to love in the first half. Offense is looking good. The pick and pop/roll defense needs to be improved. Some guys have been slow to close out on these plays. Once they get that corrected they’ll be pretty good defensively.
It would be nice to see a complete blow-out in the 2nd half especially considering the Beavs LOST their N-7 game to Texas Southern last year.
It would also be nice if they continued to shoot FT like they have in the first half. Too many TOs though (10)
Men’s basketball halftime show > Football halftime show
It’s easy to say Cal State isn’t any good… but remember last year we were battling and even losing to these types of teams in the beginning of the season. We’re doing what we are supposed to do against these type of opponents and that’s extremely encouraging.
Indeed. In sports, any little team can get lucky and beat a powerhouse, so a 17 point lead at the half is something I can’t complain about.
Just cut the TOs down on offense, and fix the PnR defense, and we’re ready for the Pac12.
Two years ago, a pretty mediocore Beaver team beat CS-Bak 73-39, so I don’t consider these guys even a decent mid-major, but you’re point is well taken, OSU lost to Utah Valley St. last year. There are better tests upsteam anyway.
Jared blows the dunk. That hurt my soul.
That was sloppy
Brandt just penetrated from the top of the 3 point line, past two players, and hit the layup+1. Nice work, to go with his good defense and rebounding.
That’s what makes Brandt frustrating. He’s capable of those type of plays a lot. He’s incredibly skilled. Once he stops overthinking things he plays some good ball. Would like to see more of that.
Their trap caused Jared to throw the ball away, TO. Bad work.
Joe inbounds the ball straight to a CSB player, then fouls him. Sick work.
This press is murdering us right now, this is very embarrassing.
Robinson being outcoached? CS Bakersfield coach has quite a history.
Damn 16 turnovers already? That’s not good.
Now Roberto gets trapped in the corner and travels. He was getting roughed up a bit, but still, this is insane.
Brandt fouls so he gets jerked again. Burton flying around out of control. Damn this looks familiar.
Uh oh.
PnR, Burton is SOOOOO SLOOOOOOOW and his man easily scores.
Burton with like 2 TOs, a few that could have been, and now his terrible rotations.
Beavers up 11, this is ugly.
Beavers have lost their focus and are playing careless. If they hadn’t thrown really poor passes this one isn’t even close. Burton was playing so well but the last 3 minutes he’s played pretty badly.
Why is it so hard to be a freakin’ Beaver fan?
Your question made me laugh for a minute and then throw up a little in my mouth.
They just don’t do anything easy anymore or else I have less patience.
Fyi- TCU is tied with Boise St in Boise at end of 3rd quarter. Its a pretty entertaining game on Versus.
7 Nation Army doesn’t have quite the same power when it’s done by the horn band.
Every foul is a FT for the next 12 minutes. Sucks to be them.
Roberto needs to get things figured out.
Roberto with a few bad plays in a row, and after he fouls on offense, Rob takes him out.
Figure out how to fix that guy, because he looks broken.
Is CR insisting that Burton take a lot of those fall away jump shots in the key?
Burton isn’t tall and has no hops. He has to do that just to get his shot off.
Yup. He needs to create space between him and the defender. The shot seems to be quite effective as well.
Yeah, I understand that but I don’t understand why he’s taking so many of those shots. Stick to the rebounding and defense and leave the shooting to the guys who can shoot.
Flagrant Foul by CSB, dude hit Moreland in the face on a fast break.
can someone gie me a link to the stream?
http://www.firstrowsports.tv/watch/91661/1/watch-csu-bakersfield-vs-oregon-st.html

for this game at least, Burton’s free throws are going in.
CSB fouls on literally every shot, this is kinda ridiculous.
Too much passing, then Starks forces up the 3. Classic Princeton offense.
and if it’s not him shooting the 3 it’s a big man who should be nearer the basket.
And another.
Starks LOVES to play his street ball, jacking up terrible shots.
Too many turnovers, too many fouls. A really sluggish, sloppy 2nd half.
The don’t look very well coached do they?
Well, the offensive system lends itself to these terrible situations late in the clock, so in that sense, no, they are not well-coached.
But coach Rob is making good substitutions, and players look better than they did last year, so in that sense, they are well-coached.
I’m not so sure about his substitutions. How good his decisions are will be more evident once OSU is playing Pac-12 quality teams. Against this team any and all substitutions look good.
Started the game 4-5 from beyond the arc, since then I think 1-9 with Starks 1-7
Burton apparently thinks he’s a scoring machine and thus must take his ill advised shots.
There was nothing wrong with that shot. He’s been effective inside. Every coach is fine with that shot.
Except for the fact that he’s taking that shot way too often.
Burton has hit a three and is making his free throws. Never thought I’d say that.
Roberto left his feet and tried to pass again, TO.
I can see why coach Rob is getting after him.
That’s 5 turnovers for Roberto.
That give and go with Moreland and Burton was beautiful.
Cooks with a great return, and Riley immediately sprinted over to give him some love. Some passion!!!
Beavs got sloppy and there’s a lot to work on, but overall this was a good performance, and I’m just glad they got the win.
As bad as this team is if OSU hadn’t gotten the win CR should be fired immediately.
Our line sucks.
That was pathetic. Their dline is living in our backfield already, and our classic “Need 7 yards, throw it 2 yards and pray the WR can do the rest” offense doesn’t work. As usual.

Lots of should-be-wins before we start Pac 12 play. It’d be nice to go into conference play with 9 or 10 wins.

Great game from Jared and Joe, good game from Moreland and Brandt, bad game from Roberto.
Mitchell with the interception, then Cal tries to steal it, then Mitchell RIPS it away. Nice work. Take some lessons, Wheaton.
First down, run up the middle. Classic Riley. Totally didn’t see that coming.
Went to the 1st half of the basketball game at Gill, then came home to watch the football game on TV.
