Slow week ahead, so this would be a good time to bring up a marketing idea. No off-topic posts here–they'll be removed. If you want to talk athletics, use the "General Discussion" thread below.

I was wondering if (a) anyone here would buy/wear angrybeav merchandise (around campus, to games, etc), (b) any graphic artists here interested in collaborating to design products?

The main reason I'd like to do this is that it would be funny to see angrybeav shirts/gear/cups when they pan the crowd at games. But, it would also spread the word/get more angrybeavs on board (there are probably thousands of pissed off fans who never heard of this site). The more fans on board, the more pressure on the AD.

I don't care much about the $ angle. I figure a consignment/commission based model or something like that would work. We can iron that out later on. Basically, I am soliciting interest. Fans: do you want the gear. Designers: could you make cool logos, designs, etc?

What would be neat is if we had talented designers who could make something so catchy it became an unofficial logo/slogan/etc. Really show the University how it's done. Unfortunately, I don't have much talent for visual arts…I like minimal/clean/punchy/humorous designs, though, so if you're going to submit an idea think along those lines. I know there are websites that allow you to put your own logos on shirts and other gear, so if we come up with something good I can work on that aspect.

This site has just under 1 million hits and 4,000 unique visitors spanning 47 States. 12% new visitors in the last month alone, so the trend is up. What I'm getting at is this could be a good opportunity for budding designers to get their work noticed.

    would be funny if the creative designers could re-brand the Oregon State logo for us to adopt, to show the school we’re tired of the beaver head logo currently being used by the school. who knows, if it becomes popular enough, maybe the school will offer to buy the design?

      Yeah, it would be funny.
      Just realized my girlfriend is actually a talented painter (she did all the paintings hanging in our apartment). I’ve never asked her to try her hand at digital art because I assumed the skills don’t crossover, but maybe they do? I’ll ask her when she comes home tonight.

        You “just realized” she’s a talented artist? I wouldn’t tell her that, you may not get any favors from her for quite some time.

        Well, I always knew she was talented at painting…what I meant to say is I just realized she might be able to crossover into graphic design. I’ve never seen her do graphics, so I’m not sure if those skills translate.

      That is just as important to know! I do not want to go through all the effort if nobody wants them and/or people are too embarrassed (ha ha) to wear them.

        I will be going to as many games as possible I’ll try to get front row student section so my shirt is seen on TV! Except when Wisconsin comes to town and buttfucks us. Haha!

    I’m in if I can get one that says “and Langsdorf calls the same play he has for that situation all season…” or “Mark Banker: defensive adjustments are for pansies, keep it the same all the time”

    So is Hawaii going to hire this guy? I was breifly excited about this until someone commented that Riley would just promote the defensive line coach and not bring in any new talent and I knew that commenter was right. But on the flip side, the new wide receivers coach has been a pretty good hire so maybe we can get an upgrade here. The Hawaii newspaper cited his recruiting connections, but I’ve been underwhelmed with the recruiting results.

      let me say that as a graphic artist (but not nearly an Illustrator like Josh), this guy could do some great stuff for OSU (and for Angry Beavs)…get him involved! I’ve actually been working on a OSU logo to replace the OS on my own time, off and on.

    A friend of a friend designed a graphic a while back for a civil war tee-shirt he sold on his website, based on the duck hunt dog as seen here…

    But it was a beaver instead of the dog. Unfortunately, he sold out before I could pick one up.

    Also unfortunately, I’m not much of an illustrator, so i can’t replicate the look very well, but if anyone he could, it would definitely be a shirt I would buy.

      pretty much every school that plays a big game vs Oregon does a variation of that. I’ve seen it on gameday many times. I guarantee you’ll see something similar with Wisconsin’s Badger at the Rose Bowl.

    Quasi related?

    An interesting article from a few years back, talking about the creation of the OS logo.

    The main point I found interesting is that the designer actually made the proposal to Oregon State to get a more unified look. Oregon State wasn’t looking for a new logo at all.

    I would be absolutely ecstatic with the same think happening for the angry beaver. I find it stupid, dated and amateurish. It will be interesting to see if there could be a groundswell created from this post.

    But I doubt it.

    i would absolutely rock angyrbeavs gear. i have a good friend about to graduate from Pacific Northwest College of Art in graphic design, ill show him this post. id love a shirt making fun of langsdorfs blue jacket or something. haha there are just so many ideas.

    How about this. The Beaver on a flag is supposed to face the staff (pole) or else it is considered dishonorable. This has some similarities to a design that won an Oregonian contest to be a new Oregon State flag. The star highlights Corvallis and is also a “NW” star. The beaver then looks toward it and the staff honoring both. Would also be good with black beaver on orange state. That way two versions could be offered.

    I foresee one big problem if you start trying to incorporate the state outline into the logo. It wouldn’t resonate the same for someone who didn’t grow up in the state of Oregon as someone who was born or raised here. I think most people are loyal to their home state first and then to their university. This could work against us with recruiting both athletes and students.

    Not exactly a logo but it’s fun to wear.
    I think angrybeav’s logo shouldn’t refer to our competitors at all, just promote OSU.
    The one with the outline of our state with the word “STATE” is awesome because it reminds me of John Belushi’s character wearing a sweater that said “COLLEGE”. Classic.

  22. I made over 60 “FIRE RILEY” T shirts and sold every last one at tailgaters. I wish I had the funds to make about 2,000 more. They would sell out quickly.
