Ben Wetzler and his 7.84 ERA take the mound at 10am today. Beavs starters have a combined 7.15 ERA and only 14 strikeouts in 34 innings. The story this year has been (lack of) pitching and defense. The offense has actually been quite good (at least by OSU standards), and that's what's kept them in games.

We'll probably have to suffer through one more weekend of Wetzler, Baylis, Childs, and Wilkerson before Pat Casey accepts reality and puts Boyd (and Schultz, though he has been bad so far) in the rotation. Cole Brocker can fill Boyd's role. Jace Fry is about a week away. I expect him to join the rotation on 3/9 in Corvallis.

St. Mary's starts Martin Agosta (1-0, 0.60). The team is 5-3 overall and not very good. Beavs should win if they get a decent start.

I don’t live in Portland and their online stream is a political show. I cannot believe that the only way to get the games on RADIO is to pay for it if you don’t live in the Portland area. The Athletic Department really has a great handle of their target audience.

          • Same as last year, Jay Reece (sp?) from Bend broadcasts most of the spring games while Parker stays with Basketball.
This Reece guy is kind of interesting but not able to do a great job of play-by-play. I don’t imagine he gets much full time support on the broadcast and believe his performance demonstrates how hard it is to keep up a running commentary and description of the action. Many here dislike Parker but he does keep up with the action and has an interesting vocabulary.

          • No problem, just frustrating. Your local supporters have free access to radio, so you make your non-locals pay. Just poor marketing, baseball is not a sport that many will pay for radio access to.

Go to radio84.com to get the KKNX feed out of Eugene. They stream all games that don’t conflict with basketball.

  1. Two run double by Keyes, tied at 2. Runners on second and third and no outs. Beavers need to get at least two more runs in

  2. Jake Rodriguez behind the plate is always an adventure and it costs the Beavers a run. Defense in this inning hasn’t been good.

  3. Not terribly impressed with Jay Reece as an announcer, either. He cannot keep track of the pitch count, and frequently forgets to focus on the game.

  4. They don’t get it and now they’re down to their final 3 outs. This would be a bad loss. Can’t lose games to teams like these.

  5. I absolutely hate it when coaches give a struggling pitcher an easy out. Allows him to get more comfortable. He was having all kinds of trouble keeping the ball in the strike zone and Casey gave them a free out on the sac bunt. You HAVE TO make him throw a strike. Got to make him work, Beavers don’t give him a free out and the Beavers may be still batting.

  6. Oh well, at least there’s still basketball today… (hey, I nearly got through that sentence with a straight face!) :)

  7. Pitching wasn’t good but giving up 5 runs isn’t too bad, the offense just didn’t anything after the 5th inning. Feels like they lost focus and hard to re-gain it. Frustrating loss that can’t happen. This team has some issues.

  8. Wetlzer stinks. Can’t go sub-6 innings and give up 4 runs to St. Marys and call yourself a #1. Maybe once in a career, but he does this every start. The guy isn’t even back end of the rotation material. Casey dropped the ball.

Overreaction or after two years of this can we admit the guy stinks?

    • Maybe a little overreaction at this point in the season but it’s not looking good. He’s only a sophomore so it hasn’t been two years yet, he was charged with 3 earned runs and one of those Brocker should’ve kept off the board. He did lower his ERA today, it’s now 6.75 and last year he had the highest ERA of the starters at 4.66. PC does seem to put a lot of stock in him though, even last year when he was struggling. I am gravely concerned though that once we get to conference play that he will get rocked.

  9. Beavers and Winthrop tied at 3 going to the bottom of the 7th. Winthrop got 3 in the top of the 7th thanks to a fielder’s choice RBI and a two run single that hit Dan Child. Bad luck there for the Beavers. Inning was extended though thanks to poor defense, again.
