I think Casey has to think about moving Dunn to 4 and Davis to 5. Feels like right now the Beavers would get more production with Dunn hitting cleanup.
My guess is that Wetzler felt he needed an extra day to rest. He pitched on Saturday, and to turn around on Thursday is tough. I think he threw quite a few more pitches on Saturday than Child did.
I really like the way the schedule is set-up this year. This ASU trip is by far the toughest roud trip we’ll have in the Pac-12 the rest of the way (since we swept Cal earlier).
Youtube video of the DL practices, interesting listening to Coach Joe at the end talking about why the DL left practice early to hit the weight room. They look small to me. But those who know technique and stuff what do you think? JackBeav
It may not happen at all. Some guys may just have an off year and Keyes may be headed that way. He can’t string together 4 or 5 really good at-bats in a row.
I had a feeling a performance like this would happen. Beavers need to get it turned around tonight. They HAVE TO keep ASU off the scoreboard. a 5 run deficit against Brady Rodgers is simply too big to overcome.
this is a must series. AZ and Stanford both won. Looks like UO will win up 6-0. USC still leading 4-3. Lose this series and they could drop in the standings big time.
I was just talking as far as hosting a regional. To host they simply cannot be swept, they need to 1 game at worst. But if the Beavers want any hope of winning the conference they need to win this series. Pretty crappy start, I must say.
5-2 going to the bottom of the 6th. Would have liked to have seen a pinch hitter off the bench for Gordon but not may options for guys who are swinging the bat well. Casey a little handcuffed there.
Forks have done a lot with two outs tonight. Most conf games for the Beavs have been 1 or 2 run decisions; looks now like this one will have to be flushed from the minds of the team in order to feel good about tomorrow and Sat.
Here’s a trident (also called leister, harpoon or gig): http://cl.calgarycomputerfix.com/lab_img/trident.png
It is used for fishing. The barbs on the prongs (note: not tines) make it particularly hard to “pitch” anything with it. In fact, those barbs make for a tool which can spear and hold on to (or gig) prey. Maybe that’s why ancient anglers invented such a tool.
This is pretty common sense stuff. It’s not educational in the least. It’s like you’re calling a pistol a rifle. And having me correct you is somehow wrong or insulting?
It’s that kind of DUH! That a university incorrectly labels a trident as a pitchfork just blows my mind. Perhaps fishing and farming require more brains than a university can provide after all.
Me too. However, its really a call for Casey, he has to decide if a few days off would do Kavin some good or if it would cause him to feel even more pressure when he returns.
Casey has said that Keyes is really hard on himself; we all can see that that has been a big part of his doldrums this season. What, two games with 3 or 4 hits and yet not enough to really get going. Yet.
Rodriguez another good throw as I type, if only he could make the stops behind the plate.
I don’t see how giving him a few days would put any pressure on him. Ultimately Casey has to do what’s best for the team, I’m not sure continuing to stick with a struggling hitter is what’s best for the team. Casey gave a few days to Jake and he’s got himself back on track. Keyes’ struggles have lasted nearly 2 months. I think they should give him the weekend and if he doesn’t get it figured out go with Gorton against Nevada and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The time off will allow him to make some adjustments and correct his swing.
The pressure comes when he returns to the lineup, thinking that its over if he doesn’t make remarkable improvement.
Casey really believes in team over individual though, my guess is he’ll pull Keyes sooner rather than later and maybe a few days off and returning in a non-con game makes the most sense.
“individuals win games, teams win championships”….Pat Casey
Nice to see Reser make that play to get the third out. When EVERYONE even a seldom used pitcher keeps their head in the game it makes me want to support the team even more.
How many recruits do we take for 2013 (football). I think we have 14 players graduating and two greyshirts coming in.
And do we take a QB this year? By my count, all four Cali schools have a committed QB, as does Boise. UW took two last year. Nikegon and UA search for a different set of skills at QB. Leach does as well, though there is some overlap since many high schools run spread passing sets (Vanderveer at AG). I think OSU can grab a good QB this year.
What are the other priorities (besides DT and CB)?
Shouldnt o line be a priority again this year? Some of the current recruits won’t pan put or will get injured. We are so weak at the position we should shoot for 3 more this year.
I would say O-line should be a priority every year. They comprise 23% of the non-ST starters. Say you give one ship to each ST starter out there (K, P, LS, Gunner and Return Specialist… ±1). That leaves 80 ships to give to O and D. 18 or 19 should go to O-linemen. Therefore, three or four should be signed every year.
So the six or seven signed (depending on whether Mitchell goes DT or not) are not enough to bring us up to that level. I would say we need another O-line class like this past year to just get us back to what should be on the roster.
fwiw… my friend who cruises educk says Hasiak’s father has posted on Scout again, and he says Stan is good to go for the first week in June… after he finishes up his classes.
JoPa getting some great run on MLB Network. He got Aubrey Huff out, mentioned being an Oregon native, two-time national champ, talked with Pat Casey yesterday whose in town and he “loves Joe Patterson”. #awesome
What content? My preconceived notion was that i would have to listen to an ASU homer call the game. All I get is a circular arrow. It’s kinda frustrating since i have the strongest wireless feed I’ve had since October. Fox has not been a good online outlet since this whole interweb thingy came into existence. But even my preconceived notion would be better than listening to Buck and/or McCarver call a game. So that’s a plus.
I also find it funny that our Arroyo Grande recruits all lost their hitting coach this spring… so he could become the manager for the Chicago White Sox.
Wetzler had struggled in the first inning his last 3 starts but tonight got the Sun Devils 1-2-3 and is keeping the ball down. Hopefully he can keep this up. Beavers need a big time game from him tonight.
I normally wouldn’t say this if I thought these were just 2 tough games and they’ll alright but they are playing really bad baseball. Offense looking bad and pitchers aren’t finishing off hitters. Frustrating to watch.
Biggest problem with the offense right now is no production from the 4-7 guys. Davis has slumped for most of the Pac-12 slate, Dunn is slumping now, Keyes hasn’t given them much of anything all season. Rodriguez has hit better of late but he was slumping for a couple weeks. Can’t score much when you get virtually no production from the 4-7 spots.
There are no bad teams in this league. Come ready to play every night or go home a loser. Also, no big advantage to being the home team either. This caliber of ball is better than you see in any single A league.
Agreed. If you have an off-series anyone can sweep you. Exactly why you have to come to the park ready to play every single game. Every team is tough to beat. Best conference in the country, IMO.
Also gave up a HUGE out late in the game and one of your better hitters was up at the plate. Late in the game down 3 runs you can’t give up outs. Your margin of error decreases even further then and they lost by 1 run. Good chance that decision had a big impact on the outcome.
You mean Barnes? And that’s a risk you have to take. Giving away an out hurts you a lot in that situation. I’d take my chances. I just feel there are times to play small ball and in that situation I didn’t think that was the time.
tough loss, not a lot of room for error in these games. ASU opportunistic and good pitching. Just a little better than us today. Come back tomorrow and get at least one.
“Your’e lamentations harken me to recollections of Sisyphian efforts to surmount an overwhelming opposing force. I fear our noble effort, not withstanding, may result in a similar outcome. But such is the nature of sport.” JB
No…. I made it up in imitation… there’s more where that came from. Could be fun to play with?? I wasn’t paying close attention to context but it worked in general. JB
I watched his, wearing the neck brace, interview from the day prior to his being outed. He lies amazingly well. The best part – after eschewing 911, Petrino just happened to get a call from his Arkansas security trooper who kindly took him to the hospital. Sheer coincidence, probably.
Lot of decisions would be whole lot easier if the players just made plays. “This is a simple game, boys. You hit the ball, you catch the ball and you throw the ball.”
Keyes lately is up at key times and so often gets behind in the count and then fizzles. 2 in scoring position and no outs really need those two to come home.
Last year in these spots he was usually really aggressive. First fastball he got he was taking a hack. This year he’s always been taking the fastballs. He needs to be aggressive.
I agree. I’ve actually been impressed with Ryan Gorton since he’s gotten some playing time. He’s been hitting the ball hard and has shown nice patience at the plate. I think he’s earned playing time over Keyes.
Reminder: We are only fans. We can only ever have so much realistic perspective on our team. I trust that Casey is doing everything he can to maximize this team’s abilities to win. And I have full confidence in Casey himself. Full.
No wonder why so many terrible decisions are being made. Not a fan of Marty Lees. He thinks he’s taking over when Casey retires. That’s a terrifying thought.
Beaver offense just leaving the door open for the Sun Devils. Incredible they’ve only scored 1 run today with how many chances they’ve had with runners on third with less than 2 outs
And one defensive mistake and the Sun Devils have the tying and go ahead runs on in scoring position with no outs. Offense doesn’t continually blow chances and the Beavers aren’t in danger of losing right now.
Pretty much. How many times this season have we seen have we seen crucial hits against the Beavers because they were too deep? Flyball that Dylan couldn’t get in 10th vs Huskies was cause he was too deep and that run was the difference. 8th inning single today to right to open the inning should have been an out but Dylan was positioned too deep. Then a 1 out bloop single that Max dove for but couldn’t get should have been out #3 but he was positioned too deep. These are things that cost you games but somehow the Beavers coaching staff does not make the adjustments.
What’s frustrating is simple things that are easily correctable are not being addressed. You don’t want basically routine flyballs to semi-normal depth in the outfield to beat you and that’s basically what happened. It is not acceptable but it won’t be corrected. I’m sure of that.
Story of the game, Beavs don’t get runs across with runners at 2nd & 3rd with nobody out and ASU gets 2. ASU reliever comes in and shut the Beavs down and we can’t get the same from our pen.
Yeah. He’s been bad in conference play. Not sure what’s going on. He must not have confidence in this team because he’s either being too conservative or too reckless. I don’t get it other than panic moves.
ASU really poured it on with 2 outs all series long. There’s a lot of the season left but they better start finding some answers. This could be the start of a death spiral.
Yup. Could be a lot like 2010. A lot of similarities. Solid start to conference play and suddenly they couldn’t get a hit with RISP to save their life and were losing series after series and had to win a couple series’ late just to reach the postseason. They need to get it together. The bullpen (Cole Brocker) and the offense have stunk the last few games. This team has the ability to be really good but I question where they are mentally. Also, the coaching staff needs to get on their game as well. They’ve made a lot of mistakes in conference play. Outfielders need be brought in a little to cut off the bloop singles that should be caught.
The whole team(coaches and players) need to get it together and do it quickly.
“”This team has the ability to be really good but I question where they are mentally. Also the coaching staff needs to get on their game as well. They’ve made lots of mistakes in conference play.” To which team and season are you referring?
Perhaps OS fans sit on their hands because they don’t have a lot to cheer about. As for Brocker – he did well last night – Casey could have/should have pulled him almost after his first pitch. If it was clear to me that CB was going to get pounded, I can’t imagine that it escaped Pat Casey. Even when the 1-run lead held up for as long as it did – no way the Beavs were going to win.
“And so as the sun sets here over the Superstition Mountains in the beautiful Valley of the Sun the Beavers are left to ponder, in the words of the immortal poet, “what might have been to the greater glory, given the vagaries of play.” JB
I was able to attend the spring practice session at Reser today. It went for a full 3 hours (11 am to 2 pm) and there was about 30 minutes of 11-on-11 with hitting (although not full tackling).
The biggest news — for me — was Rod Perry. Frankly, I didn’t expect much from Perry. But after spending about 30 minutes watching Rod Perry up close, I came away with a different view.
Perry ran the defensive backs through a bunch of drills (including some drills I don’t remember seeing last year). During the drills, Perry was watching the players closely, and giving them individual advice and tips. He would also, every few minutes, stop the drills to give the whole group a pointer or two. This continued during the 11-on-11 drills. Perry stayed engaged throughout, and coached up his def backs at pretty much every opportunity. Based on what I saw today, I believe Perry has the players’ respect, as well as their attention, and that he has a lot to offer. If Perry keeps this up, I expect OSU’s defensive backfield will play significantly better this coming season.
Many thanks, Silver. I’ll gladly wait for more, your reports never fail to educate and I am sure many here appreciate your efforts; as for Cliff and Buker/Lindsay……well, they seldom measure up.
I’m sorry, just letting clear awful decisions go just cause he’s won 2 championships makes ZERO sense. He’s had a lot of success but if I see what I feel is a bad decision I will say so. Be honest with yourself. Pat Casey hasn’t been on his game in Pac-12 play. He normally has a really good feel for things but in Pac-12 play that hasn’t been the case. He’s a really good coach but lately has been made some shaky decisions at best.
Imagining: I can see the twinkle in his eye now as you sit with him in the dugout and try to reason your better decision making with him. That would be fun to watch.
And again, I have no problem if you have a problem with Casey, I just think it’s funny. He’s so much more knowledgable about the situation than any of us fans.
Everyone needs to ease up on Keyes. The guy has had some bad luck as of late but if you watch his game, guys are making incredible plays on him. Outfielders are catching balls off of walls and making diving plays. The ASU player that caught the ball has a concussion and will miss a few games. He isn’t chasing bad pitches or hitting weak balls. His balls will drop. Give him time. As far as defense, he played first well. I am guessing that was his first time there since little league. He looked better than Danny. Ease up on the guy. Remember he should be a freshman. He never played his senior year of high school ball. Plus the kid is an all around good hearted kid with a great baseball pedigree.
The ball that was caught against the wall was the only decent ball he hit the entire weekend. Can you name the last hard hit line drive ball he has hit? I can’t. The ball that was caught was a flyball that carried. He’s been pounding the ball into the ground all season. Even when he was getting hits they weren’t well hit balls, a lot were groundballs that found a hole. The lack of line drives is really concerning.
Keyes seems like a nice kid but he’s just not very good this year. Right now Ryan Gorton is the better player.
Were you at any of the games? Have you watched any of the games live? The SS made a play on a ball that should have been over his head. During the Washington series the outfielders made diving plays and caught balls over their heads on the warning track. Don’t just read the recaps, go to the games!
Go beavs!

I can only find gametracker, should be streaming live tomorrow on FSAZ.

Yup. Friday and Saturday’s game will be here http://www.foxsportsarizona.com/pages/sundevils_stream
Tonight’s game will be replayed tomorrow at 1 PM on ROOT Sports.
@Beaver_Baseball Wind blowing to right to start game. Doubt that happens for long as it’s getting dark pretty quickly here.
Go Beavs!
Cliff’s take on Spring Ball day 2, not much new here. Interesting hearing rumors that Vaz is ahead of Mannion right now.
http://cliffkirkpatrick.mvourtown.com/2012/04/05/spring-practice-day-2-3/
Competition is good for the program. Makes sure guys compete for their positions.
Right now, nothing should be handed to anyone. No exceptions.
Whatever
Stanford and Arizona both leading, WSU losing to Seattle 1-0.
My gametracker hasn’t turned on.
Conforto and Smith with hits, 2nd and 3rd for Davis.
davis strikesout
Usc 1-0 over Cal, UO 1-0 over Ucla
@Beaver_Baseball Dunn smoked one at Rodgers and it hit him but was able to recover for the 1-3 putout. Runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd. on to b1, 0-0.
I think Casey has to think about moving Dunn to 4 and Davis to 5. Feels like right now the Beavers would get more production with Dunn hitting cleanup.
Anyone have an internet radio link?
try the Eugene am station.
http://www.radio84.com
Wow I can’t believe Gorton is not starting.
I can. Casey likes Rodriguez. Gorton has been playing a little better as of late but I wasn’t shocked to learn he wasn’t starting.
Gorton will be used either Friday or Saturday (or both) as a reliever
Cliff added video of Coach talking practice

good stuff on Sapulo
Does anybody know why Dan Child is starting and not Wetzler?
My guess is that Wetzler felt he needed an extra day to rest. He pitched on Saturday, and to turn around on Thursday is tough. I think he threw quite a few more pitches on Saturday than Child did.
USC and UO increase leads to 3-0.
Schnell’s take on football practice talks with Caleb Smith (beast mode)
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2012/04/day_2_at_oregon_state_spring_f.html
Sounds like Jake is doing a little better behind the plate tonight. Still a long way to go, can’t feel too confident in him yet.
Child gets a K to end the 3rd, forces ASU to strand a runner at 3rd. On to t3, 0-0.
Big K there!
UO breaks it open on Ucla 5-0, USC threatening to do the same on Cal 4-0. AZ leading late 10-1, and UW has one more at bat against Stanford.
JackBeav
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udGhvplSWIA&feature=youtu.be
Weight room…. yea right! They went straight to Burger King. JB
BK is a ways away from campus. They can hit many better spots than the junk food spots that just make normal people sick.
At least I hope that’s the case. I can’t imagine anyone who cares for their body actually eats fast (what is legally called food by the FDA) food.
leaving too many guys on base, I mean somebody come up with a clutch hit.
Dan Child allows an RBI single. Walked batter before that. Walks kill you every single time.
Stanford beats Dawgs, Appel CG 4 hitter. AZ 11-1 over Utah in 9th, Cal rallying 2-4 with bases loaded.
RISP hitting the difference right now, ASU getting meaningful hits.
Big spot for Child here. Needs to limit ASU to 1 run
Gives up a 2 run single. OSU coming back with how poorly they’re swinging the bat with RISP right now is unlikely.
4-0 now. They aren’t hitting well, pitching well or fielding it well. Just bad baseball.
Keyes not lookin’ like he is gonna break the slump tonight, its got to happen, but when?
It may not happen at all. Some guys may just have an off year and Keyes may be headed that way. He can’t string together 4 or 5 really good at-bats in a row.
Got to rally back and win this game.
I had a feeling a performance like this would happen. Beavers need to get it turned around tonight. They HAVE TO keep ASU off the scoreboard. a 5 run deficit against Brady Rodgers is simply too big to overcome.
This one is over. ASU is up 5-0 now and the Beavers won’t comeback. Tomorrow night is a must win.
this is a must series.
Beavers catch a break on an error and the next batter, Rodriguez, comes through with an RBI single. 5-1 now
5-2 going to the bottom of the 6th. Would have liked to have seen a pinch hitter off the bench for Gordon but not may options for guys who are swinging the bat well. Casey a little handcuffed there.
Cal rallies with 2 in the top of the 9th and beats USC 5-4.
Good job by Child to shut them down there. Let’s chip away here. Get Danny to give another solid inning would be huge.
Beavers aren’t getting enough production from there 4-6 hitters in Pac-12 play.
Their*
Jake just can’t block low pitches yet. Darn.
Big Big K there!! Now get that third out.
And there’s the dagger. 8-2 Sun Devils. Bullpen not getting it done once again.
Forks have done a lot with two outs tonight. Most conf games for the Beavs have been 1 or 2 run decisions; looks now like this one will have to be flushed from the minds of the team in order to feel good about tomorrow and Sat.
Forks?
Are you talking about the tridents?
It would certainly be stupid for an institution of higher learning to call a trident a pitchfork.
But that’s just me and my sense of reality.
A common reference for us common folk, Jack. But I’m sure many here appreciate your educational remarks.
What’s educational about it?
Here’s a pitchfork:
http://karlkuemmerling.com/store/product842.html
It is used for various farming or gardening uses. Most commonly, pitching is done with it.
Here’s a trident (also called leister, harpoon or gig):
http://cl.calgarycomputerfix.com/lab_img/trident.png
It is used for fishing. The barbs on the prongs (note: not tines) make it particularly hard to “pitch” anything with it. In fact, those barbs make for a tool which can spear and hold on to (or gig) prey. Maybe that’s why ancient anglers invented such a tool.

heh heh
Fishers and farmers aren’t common folk… I get it now.
oh man the bullpen is not reliable. Hopefully, we get two more.
And Keyes any hope of a rally in this game. He’s been so bad this season.
Ends any hope*
Right now I’d honestly rather have Ryan Gorton DHing than Kavin Keyes.
Me too. However, its really a call for Casey, he has to decide if a few days off would do Kavin some good or if it would cause him to feel even more pressure when he returns.

Nice to see Reser make that play to get the third out. When EVERYONE even a seldom used pitcher keeps their head in the game it makes me want to support the team even more.
Really bad way to start the series. Tomorrow night they need to come out focused and have a much better performance.
Yup, short memories are their best friend now.
I dont think so. REMEMBER this game, and come out more focused and determined.
Joe Avezzano died? Is 68 too young these days? I roomed with FB players during his reign (rain?)–condolences to friends and family.
Yeah… ummm… no.
Apparently people think 68 is too young. I find it rather average.
@Beaver_Baseball Today’s lineup: Barnes-CF, Smith-SS, Conforto-LF, Dunn-3B, Davis-RF, Rodriguez-C, Keyes-1B, Gorton-DH, Wetzler-LHP #gobeavs
JoPa getting some great run on MLB Network. He got Aubrey Huff out, mentioned being an Oregon native, two-time national champ, talked with Pat Casey yesterday whose in town and he “loves Joe Patterson”. #awesome
Who has a stream? I’ve tried this for a while:
http://www.foxsportsarizona.com/pages/sundevils_stream
… but it’s about as useful as anything Fox.
Working with firefox
That’s what I use.
I’m guessing traffic stalls the feed. I just can’t get on.
Working fine. Site isn’t too intuitive, like anything Fox it requires attention to content rather than preconceived notions.
What content? My preconceived notion was that i would have to listen to an ASU homer call the game. All I get is a circular arrow. It’s kinda frustrating since i have the strongest wireless feed I’ve had since October. Fox has not been a good online outlet since this whole interweb thingy came into existence. I also find it funny that our Arroyo Grande recruits all lost their hitting coach this spring… so he could become the manager for the Chicago White Sox.
Best start for Ben in at least the last 4 outings.
Wetzler had struggled in the first inning his last 3 starts but tonight got the Sun Devils 1-2-3 and is keeping the ball down. Hopefully he can keep this up. Beavers need a big time game from him tonight.
Just what Keyes needs, a little pressure.
And the slump continues
Keyes continues to struggle.
Wow. Allen was out by 5 feet on that steal.
Rodriguez, guns down another foe!
That looked like a missed hit and run, Jake had him dead by 3 steps.
Wetzler can’t throw strikes.
The trend for Jake continues, just has so much trouble stopping anything low.
Huge K there, wow looked like trouble
No kidding, last night was such a problem with two outs.
more walks, that is only going to lead to bad things.
Conforto is really battling.
Beavers looking like they won’t score with a runner on second and no outs. Can’t allow these chances to go by.
batting w/RISP just lacking again.
HUGE blown chance. When one team blows an opportunity the opposing team almost always takes advantage.
Dylan Davis hasn’t made an adjustment at the plate in 4 weeks. Teams are just going away constantly and he hasn’t made the adjustment.
Keyes with yet another weak groundball. Story of his season.
Line out to Davis, two down. Along with the DP, Wetzler getting good support.
Again, Devils score with 2 outs.
And now the Beavers are down 2-0. Awesome. offense doing nothing and Wetzler’s lack of command comes back to hurt them.
Beavers are going to get swept.
Very hard to argue with that.
I normally wouldn’t say this if I thought these were just 2 tough games and they’ll alright but they are playing really bad baseball. Offense looking bad and pitchers aren’t finishing off hitters. Frustrating to watch.
Facing darn good pitching. Time to come out first pitch swinging?
Wetzler at 105 pitches gets the K.
Have not taken advantage of the very limited opportunities. Meanwhile, we keep giving them extra chances. I hope we can comeback in this?
Biggest problem with the offense right now is no production from the 4-7 guys. Davis has slumped for most of the Pac-12 slate, Dunn is slumping now, Keyes hasn’t given them much of anything all season. Rodriguez has hit better of late but he was slumping for a couple weeks. Can’t score much when you get virtually no production from the 4-7 spots.
Dylan Davis 1 out double. Time to rally.
Davis a double, absolutely must bring him home.
Jake good contact but out, now more pressure for Keyes
Keyes needs to get the job done.
Arizona lost to Utah 7-6!
And Keyes doesn’t come through. Shocker.
UO winning again 8-3 in 8th, Usc rallies with 2 in the bottom 9 beats Cal 2-1, UW beats Stanford 6-4.
For example: Wash beats Stanford tonight and Utah beats AZ.
Alright, rally started. Barnes, Smith and Conforto up with runners on first and second and no outs. Got to take advantage, best chance they may get.
Now the rubber hits the road. Barnes up with no outs and runners on 1 & 2, reliever coming in for Devils.
Casey likely to SAC to eliminate the DP, not sure thats what I’d do.
SAC good, and that why Casey gets the bucks.
And it’s likely to result in ZERO runs. Bad decision.
The sacrifice bunt doesn’t make much sense.
Sure it does. Two runners on with no outs and the middle of the lineup coming up.
Also gave up a HUGE out late in the game and one of your better hitters was up at the plate. Late in the game down 3 runs you can’t give up outs. Your margin of error decreases even further then and they lost by 1 run. Good chance that decision had a big impact on the outcome.
OTOH Smith had already had 3 ground outs tonight, a double play would have been a serious blow.
You mean Barnes? And that’s a risk you have to take. Giving away an out hurts you a lot in that situation. I’d take my chances. I just feel there are times to play small ball and in that situation I didn’t think that was the time.
My mistake……Barnes
Two run single by Conforto! Tommasini BARELY made it in safely.
Huge clutch hit for Conforto!
WOW! Conforto is so solid! Looked out at the plate, but will take it. Let’s RALLY!
Boyd playing first?
Correct
With two outs Maggi a double. Two outs hasn’t been fun in AZ.
How ’bout that, Jake has trouble stopping another low pitch and still throws pinch runner out.
Hope Beavs call that Mo and can rally in 9th.
Gonna need Dylan Davis or Jake Rodriguez to knock one out
tough loss, not a lot of room for error in these games. ASU opportunistic and good pitching. Just a little better than us today. Come back tomorrow and get at least one.
I’m so tired of Mike Parker.
Yea… It’s all that damn announcers fault! I think the biggest problem with the team, right now is the bat boy. JB
imho – he prattles too much – and it’s worse because he usually operates without a sidekick.
“Your’e lamentations harken me to recollections of Sisyphian efforts to surmount an overwhelming opposing force. I fear our noble effort, not withstanding, may result in a similar outcome. But such is the nature of sport.” JB
DOES THAT SOUND PARKER-ESQUE???
Sisyphean is wrong in this context. So yes, it does.
Did he really say this?
No…. I made it up in imitation… there’s more where that came from. Could be fun to play with?? I wasn’t paying close attention to context but it worked in general. JB
Beavers cannot lose tomorrow afternoon. Huge game for this team. So, of course they’ll get blown out.
These losses are why series against the lesser of the pac 12 are must sweeps.
Golly gee willikers! And here I always thought Booby Petrino was a stand up guy.
Not!
http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/04/07/more-details-from-petrinos-sunday-motorcycle-accident/related/
I think he was headed to that lake with the two side by side bath tubs set-up on the shore. JB
I watched his, wearing the neck brace, interview from the day prior to his being outed. He lies amazingly well. The best part – after eschewing 911, Petrino just happened to get a call from his Arkansas security trooper who kindly took him to the hospital. Sheer coincidence, probably.
Again, failing to get runners in with Runners In Scoring Postion. Has been the common theme for this team. Here’s to hoping Fry is on today.
Makes you wonder why they toook the bat out of Smith’s hands.
I can’t remember the last time Keyes actually hit a line drive.
I was curious where we rank against the conference here’s link for those interested aswell:

so far so good for Fry.
Max Gordon: Pac-12 Player of the Year.
I don’t understand what Pat Casey is thinking. Sending a runner with the count 2-2 and 1 out with Tyler Smith up there? Why?
maybe he figured they wouldn’t risk a second pitchout?
Pat Casey’s decision may have ran the Beavers out of a run in the third. His decisions the last few weeks have been really shaky.
Lot of decisions would be whole lot easier if the players just made plays. “This is a simple game, boys. You hit the ball, you catch the ball and you throw the ball.”
Sounds a bit like Mike Riley.
it’s a neat game
Gillies isn’t nearly as good as the last two starters Beavs have faced, got to get Dunn in.
Big time hit by Rodriguez and the Beavers finally have a lead. Beavers finally hitting some balls hard.
Okay, there we go! something to build on. 1-0 nobody out
Big at-bat by Keyes here. Needs to at least get Rodriguez. A two run single would be really big.
C’mon Keyes, ducks on the pond.
And Keyes fails to produce yet again.
Absolutely no excuse why the Beavers didn’t get 3 runs in this inning. Awful, just awful approaches at the plate. This is losing baseball.
I think I liked Mike Parker’s play calling better when he was eating napkins.
bwdik
The offense is putting so much pressure on the starting pitchers to be damn near perfect with how they’re playing. Offense is so crappy right now.
Beavers have 5 runs in 24 innings this series. That is not gonna get it done.
ASU catching a lot of breaks this inning.
More two out trouble.
3 hitter for Fry so far. Not bad.
Starting to show why he was drafted as high as he was. He’s been great today.
Keyes is an automatic out.
He needs to ride the pine. Others are performing better. Let him pinch hit here and there to try to break out of it, but he’s killing the team as is.
I agree. I’ve actually been impressed with Ryan Gorton since he’s gotten some playing time. He’s been hitting the ball hard and has shown nice patience at the plate. I think he’s earned playing time over Keyes.
OUCH. Another runner at 3B with less than 2 out doesn’t make it home
Reminder: We are only fans. We can only ever have so much realistic perspective on our team. I trust that Casey is doing everything he can to maximize this team’s abilities to win. And I have full confidence in Casey himself. Full.
Lees is calling the offense this year.
No wonder why so many terrible decisions are being made. Not a fan of Marty Lees. He thinks he’s taking over when Casey retires. That’s a terrifying thought.
interesting…wonder how much actual autonomy that translates to
Leave Keyes alone for a while.
I believe the Beavers are 1 of 8 with RISP and have 4 hits with RISP the entire series.
First Base Umpire blew that call
AZ wiins series over utah
Gordon with the play of the game. Huge diving catch there, thought for sure that was getting down.
Beaver offense just leaving the door open for the Sun Devils. Incredible they’ve only scored 1 run today with how many chances they’ve had with runners on third with less than 2 outs
I don’t see how this can hold up for the Beavs –
Always feels like the outfielders play too deep.
That was prophetic –
Do we really need a shut out to get a win?
I know Barnes isn’t hitting but has his replacement been any better?
He was struggling lately but taking him out for Keyes makes no sense. Barnes better offensively and defensively.
And one defensive mistake and the Sun Devils have the tying and go ahead runs on in scoring position with no outs. Offense doesn’t continually blow chances and the Beavers aren’t in danger of losing right now.
Wow, Beavs are going to get swept.
Big strikeout by Fry. Another one of those and Fry has a chance to get out of the inning.
Beaver outfielders always being ridiculous deep costs them again.
Beavers have been outcoached this weekend.
Tough luck for Fry. That really stinks.
good outing Jace, a little hard luck there.
If the outfielders are playing normal depth the Beavers are leading 1-0 in the top of the 9th.
With the deader bats wouldn’t it be wise to re-evaluate the depth of your outfield?
Brocker deserves the loss.
And the bullpen implodes. Shocker. Cole Brocker can always be counting on to give up a crushing home run.
Brocker throws hard, but boy is it straight.
When is Pat Casey going to learn? He’s had a horrible series.
Pat Casey having a horrible series seems to be a theme these days, huh?
Yeah. He’s been bad in conference play. Not sure what’s going on. He must not have confidence in this team because he’s either being too conservative or too reckless. I don’t get it other than panic moves.
MP says it may be a time before Brocker sees the bump again, really?
There really isn’t any point in letting Keyes hit.
go home quicker?
Well, that series went as badly as possible.
DOES THAT SOUND PARKER-ESQUE?????
More later when I get time….
Many thanks, Silver. I’ll gladly wait for more, your reports never fail to educate and I am sure many here appreciate your efforts; as for Cliff and Buker/Lindsay……well, they seldom measure up.
Pat Casey doubters, truly, I have no problem with that. That’s cool.
But I am cracking up lol!!
I’ve asked this before and I’ll ask it again because imo this is a question that shouldn’t be ignored.
When Dan Spencer left OSU for Texas Tech, how much did that hurt the program?
Saying it another way, is Casey as good a coach since Dan Spencer left?
