  1. Beavers letting Nevada hang around. Offense not getting it done in the middle innings yet again. They need to add on to this lead very soon or they could easily lose.

  2. Interesting, Casey sits Keyes for this non-con game; I had speculated that he’d sit for the last two in AZ and maybe come back against Ark this weekend. Whatever it takes, this team would really benefit if he could come back ala last year.

  3. Bases loaded for Kavin Keyes. Need to take advantage and get a big hit here. Keyes needs a hard hit here in the worst way.

  4. Another runner gunned down by Jake; having a decent day at the plate as well. I missed much of the start of the game, has he let any balls get past him today?

  5. Nevada keeps getting 2 strike hits against Boyd and have scored 3 times against him in the 8th. 6-5 Beavers now. Boyd has been their most reliable reliever and he’s been getting torched.

  6. Unbelievable. Nevada has runners on second and third and 2 outs in the 8th now. Bryant has to find a way to hold onto this lead.

    • Boo to that idea. I don’t even like Utah being in the Pac. UTSA is nuts even with their recent improvements. Just my opinion.

      • Can perhaps be used as leverage to help push a Texas decision down the road. The SEC could easily be at 16 teams in a few years. Once they are at 16 the PAC probably needs to move to keep up and stay amongst the best.

  7. OT – Just saw the new American Reunion movie. Oregon State gets a pretty cool shout out from Chad Ochocinco in the very beginning.

    • It is much more interesting to see how people react to a bit of adversity rather than always having an edge or advantage in a competition. Again we will be able to observe the resourcefulness, character and competitiveness of Craig Robinson and the team as a whole. I am also interested in seeing if Scott Rueck can reinvigorate a team that ran out of gas.

  8. Bonehead may have it right, laughter is the best medicine for JC leaving. Just hope the other teams are not laughing at us next year. This is a HUGE loss and the NIT is best case for next year.
He always drew the best defender and now teams can play us straight up. Scoring goes way down next year, even with Starks casting off more frequently.

    • Scoring goes way down? Right, cause Brandt and Moreland won’t get better? and Collier is a beast, think about what he’ll be like when hes getting 13-14 shots a night? Starks’ shooting has improved and will continue to do so. Barton will get better and Roberto will have a chance to shine. Cunningham leaving actually gives the big guys more of an opportunity to show how good they are. Offense should go inside-out. A more balanced attack is much more dangerous than one team having to key in one guy.

      • Or how average they are. Collier is very good and will be the man next year. I assume Jared would have polished his jumper this summer which would opened up the inside games for the big guys. No happy face on this. By far our best player and the only difference maker on the team.

        • A post guy who is extremely difficult to stop isn’t a difference maker? Are you serious? Losing Jared hurts but doesn’t kill the team. I still really like next year’s team. Langston Morris-Walker will make an immediate impact. Players will be better, that’s a part of development. Craig will have to tweak the offensive gameplan but I still think the team is an NCAA Tournament team.

  9. The pressure to win is great and Riley has taken over Spring play calling from OC Danny Langsdorf. Will Riley trust himself or delegate his future to Langsdorf this fall? Last year Langs got pass happy far too quickly…

Should Riley call plays in the Fall?

  10. Esposito getting his first career start at catcher today. Starr is listed as DH but either Rodriguez or Gorton will be DHing today. Keyes starting 1B. Interesting.

  11. Boyd having a tough time in the 7th. Leadoff triple and a walk. 3-0 to the next batter and loses him on a 3-2 pitch. Yeske out. Sacks juiced with nobody out.

  12. Sacks juiced with 2 down for Dunn who’s facing Nevada’s closer, the 9th pitcher on the day for the wolfpack. Warning track fly out.

  13. Beavers once again blow another chance to add on runs. They’ve done nothing since the 5th. It has been a problem all season long. The team just doesn’t get add on runs. Offense disappears in the 5-8 innings consistently.

  14. Ryan Gorton comes in and 5 up and 5 down for him so far. Beavers really needed a guy to come out of the bullpen and pitch like this.

  15. Every single time I think Kavin Keyes may be on the verge of turning a corner he then puts together 3 straight weak at-bats. He’s just pounding the ball into the dirt.

  16. No idea what Yeskie and Casey are thinking here. You have to load the bases to create a force out at home. This makes no sense

    • More of just wasn’t a real great bunt by Nevada. Gorton got to it quickly and the runner was out by 10 ft and got into a rundown before Jake tagged him.

      • If it wasn’t for passed balls (a hell of a big if) I could develop some confidence in Jake. Really admire his arm and baseball IQ.

  17. Michael Conforto with another three run home run. 10-7 Beavers. Conforto now with 8 home runs and 43 RBI’s on the season

  18. No way playing the wolfpack should be such a nail-biting affair. The lack of a consistent pen and timely hitting on a dependable basis is gonna play havoc with the old Beav’s BP.

          • 6’5″ 320. The first series of the first game two years ago the starter, who was a senior, had some serious injury. Travis went in as a redshirt freshman and has started every game ever since. So he got to play on two great teams. Dad is quite proud, needless to say. I gave him some crap about Petrino when he signed, but pretty hard to resist a high level SEC offer.

      • Loved everything he said and, OT, that he goes to OSU softball games with his daughter; which team, by the way, yesterday defeated Arizona State, defending conference champs. The 2nd game called because of darkness with the Beavs leading 1-0. More action today.

        • Also important… that was the Beavs first win to open a series. Oregon was a L before they won the last two games to take the series. UCLA was two L’s before they salvaged the third game. They go 3-3 against two low to mid-teen ranked teams after losing the first game of each series, but they casually go all David Ortiz in the first game against the #3 team in the country?

  19. Other baseball news, Florida was knocked out of the number 1 spot in all the polls last week and came back to beat Florida State (the new #1 in most polls). FSU was up 3-0 and lost 6-3. Kentucky, newly ranked #1 in some polls got hammered by Louisville, 12-0 and aTm lost to UT-Arlington. Arkansa lost to OK. The rest of the top 25 all won. ucla over fullerton.

  20. Not a huge surprise that Malcolm Agnew’s hamstring flared up on him again in practice. We have talent at the position but it will be interesting to see who takes leadership roles. Will it be more of a 2 back approach this year?

  21. from sb nation -something to be said for having a gosh darnit coach,

With Petrino both unemployed and promising to become a better human, college football will need a new universal villain of a head coach. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Nick Saban’s a little too obvious there, and Todd Graham just keeps being replaced by upgrades, like he’s just a prophet who clears the way, a coach crying out in the wilderness. Who can get mad at that guy?

Not to worry, as someone will surely present himself as the top candidate any minute now. What is Mike Riley hiding? We’re onto you, Mike Riley. No, you’re cool.

  22. OT but for iPhone users here’s a way to get to the top of the page without Angry having to figure out a new button: Zip to the top of the page: In Mail, Safari, Contacts and other apps, simply tap the status bar at the top of the screen — the area that displays time, battery and cell bars — to jump back to the top quickly.

Since there’s no Angrybeavs app… Create an “app” out of a website you visit often: To add a website to your Home screen, just visit the webpage in Safari and at the top of the screen, tap the Go To icon and select “Add to Home Screen.”

  23. Hearsay from PO: JC being told he needs to be a PG in order to make it in the NBA. Can’t get that experience at OSU so he’s jumping ship to play overseas.

    http://www.pure-orange.net/cgi-bin/anyboard.cgi/bschoops?cmd=get&cG=2343238333&zu=3234323638&v=2&gV=0&p=

Seems like the perfect solution is to play Starks as a back-up and have JC as the starting PG. Perhaps the back court would be JC and the new kid Walker.

CR likes Starks so apparently it ain’t gonna happen otherwise JC wouldn’t be bailing.

    Oh well.

      • Rant? Wasn’t intended to be a rant. Just mumbles (random thoughts) about what might (could) have been. I’m doing taxes (dealing with K1’s sucks) and don’t have time to proof read or edit.

If the hearsay is true then it makes sense to make the move and best of luck to him. But I still wish he could have gotten that needed(?) experience at OSU instead of …….

        • I think people give Jared too little credit for his actual abilities. Looking at him in a hot-dog game like the NBA, his talents translate fairly well. The problems with someone who relies on their athleticism is that athleticism falls off as a player ages. That’s where the perimeter shot comes into play.

It takes hard work to become the defender and athlete he’s become. It would take equally hard work to become a shooter. Only a few gifted athletes are both in every draft. So some time on the pro level will naturally progress his game.

Or have we forgotten that players progress on that level as well?

What makes Tony Wroten a better prospect than Jared? Is he a better athlete? Does he have an outside shot? Does he ever pass? Does he play half the defense Jared does? Is he a hard working, calm presence on his team? Will he provide a team with one highlight dunk per game for the enjoyment of the fans?

Wroten is projected somewhere around 20th overall. Yet he shoots 16 points lower than Jared from the line and 18 points lower from beyond the arc.

What are they saying about his poor defense, horrid perimeter shooting and almost four TO’s per game? They’re justifying it all by saying those things will come with time and patience. Supposedly he will have the maturity to sit on a bench and learn the game while he’s in the NBA.

Jared knows these things. He’s probably also looking at Damian Lillard and wondering how the hell someone who is not as good as him is rated as a lottery pick. Do we think Jared goes for 24 a game if he plays in the Big Sky? Yes, Lillard has an outside shot. But he also has a major hitch in that shot. And he’s not as athletic as Jared by any stretch of the imagination.

Brad Beal, Jeremy Lamb, Austin Rivers and Dion Waiters are all SG’s who are rated for the first round and are the same size as Jared. Yet Jared is undersized for a 2, and they aren’t? Lamb and Waiters are the only two comparable to Jared on the defensive end on that list. And Lamb and Rivers are the only two who are decidedly better than Jared from outside. Again, Lamb is the only one who shows the same athleticism as Jared.

Of all the guards I’ve listed, I think only Lamb and Rivers are actually better than Jared. I don’t see why people are down on him for thinking the same thing. He’s just going to have to prove it in private workouts.

          • There are plenty of current NBA guys around his size who play the 2, and they would love to have his athleticism. One thing you’ll find though is they all can shoot the 3 with more accuracy. If he can learn to play the point, I could see a guy like Jared, at his size, playing like Russell Westbrook, but I just don’t think he has the mental toughness for that position.

          • Portland’s front office is known for drafting guys in the 2nd round and letting them play in Europe to develop. Wonder if they got in Jared’s ear and guaranteed him a 2nd round pick if he falls to them? They are desperate to find a PG of the future, and have gone after guys with a similar skill set in hopes they can fill that role (Jarryd Bayless comes to mind)

          • You’re overstating the competence of shooting guards in the NBA. There are some greats, and there are others.

An NBA scout gave me two words when I asked him about Jared’s expected value in this draft:

            Monta Ellis

He says Jared has first round talent, but many teams see early second round steal if their needs come before talent in the late first. He also carries a ton of value because he was one of the most efficient transition players in the nation this past year. I would look for him to end up somewhere the PG is solid, the SG is aging and there are no viable back-ups to either due to age/injury/cap. Minnesota and Boston come to mind.

And Portland isn’t a bad guess if they’re going to turn over the roster. Two picks in each round gives them a lot of looks.

          • Oh… and if there’s room in the league for Malcolm Lee, then I need to hear again how Jared’s perimeter shooting is going to be a problem. I don’t don’t know how Lee got drafted. I don’t know how he got a guaranteed contract after being drafted in the second round. I just don’t get the whole “Malcolm Lee” thing.

Jared was better as a soph than Lee was as a junior… in every fac

  24. Will Riley reach the important 6 win level in 2012? A breakdown of the complete season with games OSU should be favored in and also those we will likely not be. Currently, I see 5 wins as most likely but a 6th not easy to come by. Pick your season win total and the games you think OSU will win.

    2012 OSU Season Breakdown:

    • Lets see……last year we almost beat Sac State……so…… any teams on the schedule weaker than Sac State….. well, shit…cant find any……

      So I guess 0-12 is a safe pickem….

Face it…we did this last year and got hugely embarassed. I will believe they can win, when they beat ANYONE….

      • I’m with you on this one. Last year I predicted 6 wins with a realistic shot at 8 wins. Whoops. For the sake of not sounding like a UW fan I think I’m going to refrain from predicting our final record until I actually see them play a couple of games. If they blow out Nicholls State and play Wisconsin tough I’m sure I’ll get sucked into getting my hopes up again though.

        • I think the OOC games will tell us pretty quick what the season will bring. It was a good indicator last year. I have to suspect that anyone with us on their schedule is looking at that game as a very good shot at a win……anyone….
