Probable pitching matchups:
- Friday: Wetzler (4-2, 3.23) vs Triggs (3-4, 3.19)
- Saturday: Fry (4-2, 2.23) vs. Mount (1-5, 5.03)
- Sunday: Child (4-2, 2.13) vs. Tarpley (4-1, 2.67)
USC has a decent lineup but they lack power. Their bullpen is a strength, so Beavs have to get to the starters.
Regarding the NCAA tournament, UCLA, Arizona, and Stanford are the hosts right now. UCLA seems a lock with a 3 RPI. Arizona, at 18, is sitting pretty if they continue to win series. And then there are those pesky Ducks. Beavs could leapfrog Stanford if they win that series. RPI (Stanford 11, Beavs 27) will be a big factor.
Obviously for the Stanford series to matter, in terms of hosting, they need to win this weekend's series.
Go Beavs
A must sweep series.
For regional hosting a sweep is not something they need. For Pac-12 Title race, yes, a sweep is what must happen.
Pretty much
I think the Beavers sweep the series. They’re playing well and have the edge offensively. A sweep would be big. Would put the Beavers 1 game out of first and gives them a legitimate shot at a Pac-12 title. They have 3 really tough series remaining, 2 of which are at home. Got to take advantage of playing USC and Utah. Beavers go 6-0 there and I like their chances to win the conference.
Beavs have been up and down, though. Who knows which team will show up–might be the one that doesn’t score or play D.
Beavers have really only been bad defensively once in 3 weeks. Also, as solid as Triggs is, he’s not Adam Plutko. Pitchers like that can make you look pretty bad some nights. Offense starting to pick it up just a little bit. Beavers have one of the best 2-3-4 combos in the entire conference. Dunn had a couple tough weekends, he was picking it up over the weekend and Ryan Barnes has been hitting the ball hard as of late. If Dylan Davis can make some adjustments and give the Beavers another semi-consistent hitter, the offense will be pretty good.
Offense will be fine and the starting pitching is really good, only concern is the unreliable bullpen. Always worried about them blowing a crucial game. Ryan Gorton has been really good this year, only one really. Boyd and Bryant have been damn good the previous two years but this year not sure why they’re having such a difficult time executing their pitches. Their breaking pitches are consistently being left up in the zone and the fastball often right over the heart of the plate. In the past they lived on the corners and knee high. Hopefully they get things figured out and return to what they were before. Beavers need them.
Go Beavs and way to go lady Beavs vs Utah.
Go Beavs!
How can you guys even think about baseball when Fan Fest is only 16 hours away!!!
I’m like a kid on Christmas eve. Imagine the excitement at Reser when MR carefully unwraps this years product. A controlled scrimmage..what a treat! There will be “tons of neat stuff”!
WARNING……Start for Corvallis early!! The freeway will be crowded as football fans make their way south. Of the 40,000+ plus on the road… at least 500 will be headed to Corvallis. JB
if i’m not mistaken the ducks aren’t having their spring game until sunday, so no, traffic will not be an issue.
Mistaken… Saturday at 11:00. JB
shit
That was too easy.
MR starts another QB controversy by replacing Mannion with Vazquez after three plays into the fest?

Brandon Garcia throwing instead of Triggs tonight. He’s their midweek guy. Has an ERA of 4.18.
Lead-off single by Max Gordon. Would be nice to get him in and give Wetzler an early lead.
Error by the third baseman and the Beavers have runners on second and third and no outs
Analyst keeps referring to Ryan Gorton as “Ryan Gorto”.
RBI groundout to the 2nd baseman. 1-0 Beavers. Tyler Smith to third with 1 out for Gorton
RBI groundout by Gorton and it’s 2-0 Beavers. This has been an EXACT copy from the Sunday game against the Bruins in the first inning so far
Dunn singles now. Hopefully Barnes can launch one into the gap and the Beavers can add another run.
Barnes singles. Runners on first and second for Dylan Davis. Big chance to get a big lead early.
Sorry, Joey Matthews, not Dylan Davis
2-0 Beavers going to the bottom of the first
Offense did work in the first inning, then get Wetzler to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first and gets them right back up at the plate. That’s big. Hopefully the offense keeps it rolling.
Rodriguez singles and Tommasini bunts him to second and Gordon is hit. Chance to score again. Got Smith and Conforto coming up.
Sorry to interrupt… LaMicheal James SF 49’s Round 2 #29. JB
who’s he?
Bases loaded and 2 outs for Ryan Gorton. Big at-bat. Chance to give Wetzler a really nice leead.
Damn. Gorton stung the ball but right at the right fielder.
5 left on base through 2 innings. Beavs need to start getting some timely hitting.
that catch was BEAST
USC VERY lucky to be down just 2-0. Beavers smacking the ball consistently hard against Garcia, just fielders making great plays and they’re at defenders. Beavers are going to have a big inning soon against Garcia. He’s not fooling any hitters.
I much rather would have Gorton as the starting catcher. Jake Rodriguez cannot block pitches.
Jake has shown a great arm but even a perfect arm is a very poor trade for the number of balls he has let get past him.
This USC broadcaster is insane
AND THERE’S A HIGH FLY BALL DEEP TO LEFT…. and it’s caught thirty feet in front of the warning track.
Lead-off walk to Jake Rodriguez. Time for the offense to get it going this inning.
Sac bunt and Gordon up with Jake at second and 1 out; Beavs have got to get more runs and stop leaving guys on base.
Every run added on helps demoralize the Trojans.
Tommasini with a sac bunt and and Gordon singles. Runners on first and third for Tyler Smith. Need him to come through here.
Clutch two out RBI single by Conforto. 3-0 Beavers.
I understand trying to stay out of the double play but I would like to see them let the guy batting over 400 swing away there.
I agree. It was bizarre. You just play things straight up and the Beavers have may have scored 3+ runs that inning
Damn. Hardin to the hated Bears.
3-0 Beavers through 5. Got to add some runs now. Can’t let USC hang around.
Exactly. With their good pen they won’t get discouraged unless Beavs start adding on runs….SOON.
Wetzler starting to get hit a bit now. 3-1 Beavers now.
Wetzler about to give up the lead
3-2 Beavers heading to the 7th. Beavers offense needs to get some insurance runs. 1 run lead with 3 innings left is never comfortable.
Beavers catch a break on an error. Smith on first to lead-off the 7th. Conforto up now
Conforto had the count in his favor and swung at a bad pitch and it’s a DP. 2 outs.
According to these broadcasters the USC pitchers don’t throw bad pitches…. even when they miss. Brutal.
Basically. Pitches are “Right on the corner” when it favors USC pitchers, if Wetzler throws it in the same spot then it’s questionable.
Got a bad feeling about this one. Beavers offense started well but for some reason it has gone away in the middle innings. Seems like a focus issue.
Not sure its a focus issue. As Angry said, the Trojans have a good pen.
Reason I disagree is because their at-bats early in the game were much better than the last couple innings. Guys aren’t being as patient and are chasing bad pitches or are ahead in the count 2-0 and not swinging at their pitches and getting themselves out. It’s not as if they’re behind, so they don’t need to be overly aggressive.
Nice job by Schultz to come in and get a strikeout. Beavers are looking for another setup guy, he could be it. Offense needs to add an insurance run now. 1 run leads are stressful.
Ryan Dunn does just that. Solo home run. 4-2 Beavers
Schultz ends the 7th with a K, if Beavs get leadoff batter on we will see momentum begin to change. But all for naught if men are left on rather than coming home.
watching them i don’t understand how usc doesn’t have a better record
Offense. I think coming in they were 10th in the conference in runs/game
Dunn a leadoff HR…….mo has changed!
Triple down the right field line by Matthews with 1 out. Chance for Rodriguez here to make it 5-2 Beavers.
Matthews a triple……time to put the knife in!
Rodriguez RBI single, 5-2 Beavers
Rodriguez on first with RBI single, hope Casey doesn’t ask Tommasini to bunt but it wouldn’t be out of character for him to do so.
Beaver hitters have made an adjustment during the game. back-to-back hits by Matthews and Rodriguez, they got fastballs and hit them the other way, guys had been pulling off the ball and pounding it into the ground. They stayed on the ball longer and hit it where it was pitched and resulted in another run. Good adjustment.
Pinch runner for Jake means we will see better D at the catcher spot for the rest of the game. Should say better stopping power.
Michael Conforto up with the bases loaded and 2 outs
big out
5-2 Beavers going to the bottom of the 8th. Just need a solid inning from Schultz and then turn it over to Bryant in the 9th.
That’s what I like to see from Schultz. Comes in the game and 4 up and 4 down.
A little Jimi in between innings. Cool!!
Dunn a one out double, what a team captain!
Ryan Dunn is on fire right now. Another ball crushed, this time in the gap for a double. Chance for the Beavers to add another insurance run in the 9th
Ryan Barnes bunt single. Runners on first and third and 1 out for Matthews
Damn. Joey Matthews DP.
Barnes beats out his bunt, got to bring Dunn home from third with only one out, thats what I’d call putting the knife in.
As I type Matthews grounds into a DP………….this type of thing will screw the Beavs sooner or later.
Boyd coming in to close the game out. Odd they aren’t going to Bryant here
this bullpen is in a bad funk right now
Thus the need to stop leaving runners in scoring position. But today the Beavs are gonna be OK.
And, lets not overlook the job turned in by Schultz.
5-3 Beavers now
Go Beavs!
Whew! Boyd gets the save and the Beavers win 5-3. That final out was a ball that smoked.. I’ll take the out. Nice job by the Beavers to take game 1. Got Fry on the mound tomorrow and Child in game 3. This was the one where I felt USC had the best chance to win. I like the Beavers’ chances to sweep now.
A sweep would be a real boost for already rising morale. Kinda glad Bryant didn’t have to show his stuff tonight…..may make him that much more effective if needed Sat/Sun.
Some scores from around the conference: Oregon beat Cal 4-1, Stanford leads UCLA 7-1 in the 9th, ASU beat Washington State 7-4, Washington beat Utah 9-1
OT http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2012/04/nfl_draft_oregon_state_safety.html hardin in the third round. did NOT see that one coming
Why not? Didn’t we have a post somewhere around here talking about this very thing last night?
i must’ve missed it. i had read fourth round at the earliest for him. i think he could have a good career as a do-it-all special teams guy, but the third just seems so early for him to me.
Concerning the NCAA tournament(is duck coach horton on the selection committee)…
The Pac 11 has 6 top 25 teams (Ucla, stan, UA, ASU, UofO, OSU), and rpi wise, it would not be astoundingly crazy to see any of wash, cal, usc make it. However, I predict the Pac will get screwed out of a chance for multiple teams to Omaha via the bracketing. Ill bet there is more than 1 pac11 matchup in the regional, and those winners will face each other in super regionals. That just seems to be how it works. And look out for Beavs getting screwed in matchups via horton..
Well, Pac-12 teams that are hosting cannot play in the Super Regional because of rules against that. Only way they can if regional hosts are paired up and one of the Pac-12 teams in the regionals is no higher than a 2 seed. I think Arizona, Stanford, UCLA, and Oregon State will be the regional hosts, so at least 4 teams will get a shot to go to Omaha.

OT: Despite our new marketing hire the OSU “Fan Fest” seems like more of the same. OSU needs to have a more aggressive vision that includes public statements and the occassional press conference about the intentions and direction of the program. Truax needs to be open for Gamedays 3 hours prior to kickoff this fall. We can’t afford to wait any longer in our pursuit to reach the top of the Pac-12.
Oregon State Fan Fest:

Looks like the link for yesterday’s stream is also good for today’s game
http://apps.ohlulz.com/ncaa/?lulz=rtmp://cp98724.live.edgefcs.net:1935/live&id=usc_m-basebl@31503
Heh… OSU gets one giant swooshbag on their backstop, and USC is apparently sponsored by a condom manufacturer.
OT- Anybody go to fanfest? Thoughts? Hoping to see silverstreams review later
Jace Fry having control issues in the first inning. Bases loaded and 2 outs for USC
Double by Dunn in the 2nd with 1 out
Matthews walks. Runners on first and third and 2 outs for Jake Rodriguez
Jake Rodriguez RBI single. 1-0 Beavers. Tommasini up with runners on first and second with 2 outs
Angry — it would be nice for the site to come up initially at the latest thread. Just a suggestion.
Dunn is locked in right now. Even his outs are balls that are smashed.
This game is a battle of aces. Ben Wetzler may be the Friday night guy but Jace Fry is their best starter.
Game is tied at 1. Jace Fry isn’t as sharp as he had been the last 3 starts.
Tied at 1 after 4 innings. Time for the offense to get it going.
Jake gets it going with a lead-off double. Got to get him in now
Sac fly by Gordon and it’s 2-1 Beavers
USC has runners on first and second with 2 outs
Tied at 2 now
Fry is simply not on his game today. Hits a guy, then gives up a walk and 2 straight hits and the Beavers are losing 3-2.
3-2 USC after 5
Lead-off single by Conforto
Gorton and Dunn have both barely missed crushing a couple pitches in this inning. 2 outs for Barnes
Single by Barnes. Runners on first and second and 2 outs for Matthews
I know Dylan Davis has struggled in Pac-12 play but he clearly has much more pop than Joey Matthews and Matthews hasn’t swung the bat well today. Seemed like a good spot or a pinch hitter in such a crucial spot in the game.
USC leads 3-2 going to the top of the 7th. Rodriguez, Tommasini and Gordon are due up.
Triggs hs been very fortunate today. Beavers just missing on some pitches to hit.
USC leads 3-2 going to the 8th. Smith, Conforto and Gorton due up. Time for the middle of the lineup to get the job done.
Tyler Smith HBP to start the 8th. Break for the Beavers. Got to take advantage. Conforto up with nobody out. Big spot in the game here.
Conforto squaring to bunt. Don’t like this decision at all.
Pitching change now for USC. They’re bringing in a lefty to face Conforto. Probably will be the only hitter he faces as the Beavers don’t have another lefty batter the next 6 hitters.
Conforto bunts and Smith up to 2nd with 1 out. Amazing the Beavers’ best hitter bunted there. Let’s see how that works out.
I’m watching on gametracker so I am not sure if this is accurate, but did Casey just bunt Conforto in the 8th inning???
Yes, he did.
And just like that there’s 2 outs and the Beavers have 4 outs remaining. Having Conforto bunt is looking worse and worse.
It was a horrible decision no matter the outcome. Can’t have arguably the best hitter in the league bunting with 6 outs left in the game.
I agree for multiple reasons. Conforto is clearly the best hitter on the team, Gorton has been struggling a little this weekend, and it’s in the 8th inning, you can’t afford to give away outs that late in the ball game.
This home plate umpire is HORRIBLE. That pitch was clearly outside and he rings up Dunn. Also, decision to bunt was just awful.
Terrible strategy. You can’t give free outs this late in the game.
If Gordon, Barnes, Rodriguez, Tommasini, Matthews are up, then I like the idea of bunting with a runner on and no outs late in the game down 1, but not with Conforto. His bat is too important. Also, Casey tried that same crap against UCLA, but Conforto couldn’t get the bunt down and hit a double. Beavers may have lost if Conforto had gotten that bunt down.
Yup
Cole Brocker nearly gives up a bomb but it stays in the yard. 3-2 USC going to the top o the 9th. Barnes, Matthews and Rodriguez due up. I’ll be shocked if Matthews bats.
Matthews bats for some strange reason and strikes out.
whiff
Beavers were outcoached today and that may have been the difference.
As you’ve seen, I’m a very strong Casey supporter but the Conforto bunt decision was highly questionable.
It would be understandable for nearly any other hitter but not Conforto. Felt like he was trying to force things a bit there. Make USC play good defense on bunts when they’ve had trouble with it but with Conforto up it didn’t make sense. Hopefully next time he will let his big bat take some hacks.
How was the fan fest? I’m guessing it was “neat” for all involved.
…they probably moved it to the practice fields.
I went to the Fan Fest with my youngest son (14 years old). The scrimmage started around noon and lasted for a couple of hours. Before the scrimmage, from 10 am to 11 am, most of the Beaver players were seated at long tables in the Reser Stadium lobby, available to sign autographs. To me, the autograph session was the best part, because it gave me a chance to talk to individual players for a few seconds, to ask them a question or two, and sometimes to get an interesting response.
For example, I asked Reuben Robinson whether he had been moved back to MLB. He said “yes”. I asked him why. He said he didn’t know (!) I asked him whether this was a good change from his perspective. He made clear by his facial expression that he didn’t like the change, and then said it was “up to the coaches”.
For another example, at the end of the autograph session, I saw Rashaad Reynolds leaving (heading towards the Valley Center to suit up for the noon scrimmage). I walked up to RR, and asked him direct questions about what is being taught to the defensive backs about looking back for the ball. RR told me that the defensive backs are taught to look back for the ball only if they are “even with the receiver or ahead of the receiver”. If the defensive back is “behind the receiver” (that is, chasing the receiver), then the defensive back is “not supposed to look back for the ball”. I asked RR whether Rod Perry is making changes in this area. RR said Rod Perry is making lots of small technique improvements, but not so much in this area.
With Sean Mannion, I mentioned the 18 interceptions last season, and asked Mannion what he has been doing in the off-season to address this problem specifically. Mannion said he has been watching a lot of film this off-season, including film of every one of his interceptions, multiple times, to try to see what he did wrong, and to avoid making the same mistakes again.
I asked the new punter, Tim McMullen, whether he is good at rugby style kicks, and whether he plans to use rugby style kicks this season. McMullen said “absolutely” to both questions — he considers rugby style kicks to be one of his strengths, and he will be employing rugby style kicks during the season.
Justin Addie and Josh Andrews were sitting side-by-side at an autograph table. I asked them whether they were getting sick of Cav and his yelling. Addie shrugged his shoulders at first, and said “not really”. Addie and Andrews then looked at each other and laughed, and said, “yeah, sometimes, he really is unbelievable…”
Andrew Seumalo and Rusty Fernando were also sitting side-by-side, at another table. I asked them whether the Beavers would be doing anything new or different to stop the run this season, given OSU’s obvious lack of success at stopping the run last season. Seumalo said that OSU was putting in “a new package” to stop the run, and also working on some new techniques. I’m going to send a note to Cliff to ask him to follow up about this “new package” and what it might be (but don’t really expect Cliff will do it….)
As for the scrimmage itself, I didn’t find it that interesting or revealing. The first and second string ran about 60 plays in total, but it wasn’t that realistic or hard-hitting. The G-T and Oregonian will report all the stats from the scrimmage, but they probably won’t mention that many of the passes were completed only after defensive linemen broke through the line, and pulled up in front of the QB, to let him throw the ball. I thought neither Mannion nor Vaz had a good day. Each misread coverages and threw a number of bad passes (some of which were picked off, others of which should have been). I hope Mannion keeps studying film, and gets better at reading coverages, because — at this point — he doesn’t seem to have improved that much in this area from last season.
At RB, Storm Woods looked pretty good. He got to the line quickly, made one or two nice jump cuts to avoid tacklers, and ran hard all day (running over a DB on one play, and rarely going down on initial contact). Terron Ward and Malcolm Agnew looked okay, too. None of them is a bad RB. None of them seems great, either. Fingers crossed that the hype about the new incoming freshman RB — Chris Brown — turns out to be correct.
During the scrimmage, a RS Freshman named Micah Audiss was making plays all over the field (including an interception, a blocked FG, and a few pass break-ups). Don’t know if he’s the real deal or not, but he certainly had a good day today, and bears watching in summer camp.
The kicking game looked good in today’s scrimmage. Tim McMullen hit a couple of long punts (conventional style, not rugby) and looked solid. Trevor Romaine’s already strong leg appears to have gotten stronger in the off-season. TR boomed the first kickoff out of the end zone, hit another kickoff into the end zone, and also hit a 40+ yard field goal with plenty of room to spare. Under good weather conditions, the Beavers should be in field goal range this season as soon as they reach the opponent’s 35-yard-line.
Great insight, thanks. Very disappointing to hear about Mannion.
Thanks Silver. I am impressed with your questions and approach to the players.
I agree that Cliff may not follow up on your question but its worth a shot. After my recent dust up with him I have about decided he should go into politics with his penchant for non-answers.
Great great great report!!!!
Wow, nice interviews.
I was at the scrimmage too, mostly concur with Silver.
Storm Woods was the best RB, showed good speed and ran through some tackles. Sounds like he really needs to work on pass protection though, which Riley says is the single most important thing he wants in his RB. I thought Agnew looked pretty good, but wasn’t that impressed with Ward.
Micah Audiss looked really good- that surprised me. Saw some good plays out of Poyer, Zimmerman, Ashton, and Murphy too.
Saw Zeke Sanders make several good plays too- he may bear watching later on?
“None of them is a bad RB. None of them seems great, either. ” Does that include Storm Woods, or just Agnew/Ward/Jenkins/Stevenson?
And as far as “great,” in the recent Beaver context, I think of Steven Jackson obviously, and Jacquizz Rodgers, both of whom had uncommon physical abilities, then Simonton and Bernard, who didn’t have unusual physical abilities but were productive.
So if you look at those four, would any of the current backs be at least as good as Bernard or Simonton?
OSu probably have as much or more depth at RB than Riley’s ever had. Usually, after the starter, its been a quick drop off. “Depth” can also mean the talent pool is shallow and/or narrow (as in OSU’s DTs). But in the case of the RBs, I honestly think a creative offensive coordinator could use Woods, Brown, Stevenson very effectively, and have Ward chime in as well. Jenkins I would prefer to see as a back up – it just seems to me if he played more frequently and consistently, his limitations (acceleration, top end speed, change of direction) would become more evident.
Further, with this receiving corp and these RB’s, it appears to me that “using the pass to set up the run” could be the way to go, particularly with an offensive line that’s going to have to have players of varying experience and little time working together as a unit.
When you see Woods, Ward, and Stevenson play, who appears to have the best acceleration and speed?
I hope that Chris Brown gets a fair shot to win the job, and I hoe he’s working hard this summer.
thanks again for the only real meaningful report on the ‘net….
they probably moved it to the practice fields.
OT: James Rodgers signs with Atlanta and joins his brother with the Falcons
I was surprised that Chris Polk wasn’t drafted today. Anybody hear where he ended up? How about Kellen Moore – anywhere? Cliff Harris, Eddy Pleasant?
Kellen Moore went to Detroit, Cliff Harris to the Eagles, Eddie Pleasant to the Texans, Polk to the Eagles. Remmers got signed by the Broncos, Cam Collins to the Dolphins, Hekker to the Rams.
Read that Chris Polk has what’s considered a “degenerative shoulder condition.”
Why anybody in the NFL would even sign Remmers as a free agent is beyond me. There are RBs and DBs that did better on the bench press than he did. I can’t imagine he’d even be helpful in a pro camp.
Or Hekker for that matter.
He is being used to train officials to call offsides penalties. The man has a gift.
Remmers had a bad year plain and simple. But let’s be objective and pull our heads out of a brain freeze for a moment. For three years Remmers was a right tackle, often covered by a tight end. His lack of quickness for three years was not a big concern since he did not often face the speed rusher, since there was a balanced attacked, since he often had help to the outside and since he had backs that were capable of chipping. He took a bullet for the team when he was shifted to lt because the coaching staff was totally unprepaired in recruiting and preparation. The staff used no brains in matching the OSU capabilities against opponents. When you meet a foreigner that doesn’t understand English, do you just speaker louder? When Cavanaugh does not understand what is going on, does he just yell louder? Did they use a te to block the outside speed rush? Did they use a back to chip? Did they use the hback to help? Did they take wider splits? Did they vary the count to help keep the speed rushers at bay? There was literally no one else on a roster of 100 players that was trained, capable and healthy enough to play lt. Look at Jonathon Martin at Stanford, all year long getting butt kissing press and all year long getting help while the unsung freshman tackle on the other side did all of the work. I am not saying that Remmers was/is good. But I think that the guys ragging him are misinformed and not objective. Funny thing that Brian Anger, Cal punter gets drafted high. I have sat at many a game with Bear fans (OSU game 3 years ago included) when he was known as shank man and Bear fans would have traded him straight up for Hekker.
Your Berkeley friends would be morons then. And there were better players available to play LT last year, just as there were better players available to play RT the year before… and RG the year before that.
You, my friend, do not know the politics of going 5-7 or 3-9 before you even start the season. It was written in money, not sweat.
And you all can use your imaginations. I won’t clarify beyond the vagaries.
There was a reason that Brian Anger was drafted and Hecker only signed a free agent deal. There is a reason why the exOSU punter was best in the nation. Still, Hecker was better than average and he outkicked Anger in Berkeley. Yet Anger improved where as Hecker was maddeningly streaky. I care nothing for politics nor backroom innuendo. I am not a guy with inside connections and do not want to be that guy. I am anti privilege, blue collar. If you look at the picture in the Gazette today of Ward running the ball, you will notice Andrews was beat off the snap and had hands extended to hold before Ward could get to the line. Remmers had lots of help in the poor play department. If there were so many other options last year at left tackle, then why is the number one guy this spring a redshirt freshman that was injured last year and unable to play his senior year in high school? OSU will have options in the fall for oline and punter. Thank God. Still, somebody thought enough of the ex Beaver guys to give them a chance at pro ball.
Thanks, guys, for the practice reports. Great stuff, SS.
The leakage in the OL, ….is that due to bad blocking or some improvement in the defense? Any way to tell?
Back-to-back doubles by Barnes and Smith and it’s 1-0 Beavers
Ryan Gorton with a clutch two out RBI single 2-0 Beavers
No idea why Keyes in the lineup, he grounds out to end the top of the 1st. 2-0 Beavers.
USC gets runners to first and third but Child gets a DP to get out of it. Beavers lead 2-0 after an inning
Key for the Beavers today is to add on runs. Need to create separation today. Offense has a tedency to get relaxed with a lead and lets teams back into games. Need to keep adding on runs.
2-1 Beavers
Tied at 2 now. Child doesn’t appear to have his best stuff. Let USC right back in this.
This could be a game where the Beavers have to go to the bullpen early
It is still early but this sounds like a game where the Beavs are going to need to score a bunch to win.
Darn right, as yesterday demonstrated two runs aren’t likely to win many games. Today it looks like it will take 6 or more.
Did anyone sign Mitchell? I thought once healthy, he could make it into a pro camp.
4-2 USC now. Dan Child flat out doesn’t have it today.
Dan Child was an out away from the Beavers taking a 2-1 lead going to the third and has given up 3 straight hits and 4 runs in the inning. USC singling the Beavers to death
4-2 USC after 2 innings of play.
The offense needs to come back right now and get the momentum back.
Child has to keep the deficit at 4-2. With the USC bullpen they can’t fall behind much. Once they bring in the ‘Pen it will be extremely difficult to score.
child getting beat like he stole from a nun
Dan Child needs to be pulled. He can’t get anybody out consistently.
Parker keeps reminding us that Child has not been hit hard yet. Even Parker admits that these singles are reason for concern and for pulling Childs.
Well, when the Beavers fall down 8-2, those “singles” may look a little worse. Doesn’t matter how hard the hits are, he’s not getting ANYBODY out. If that isn’t concerning than I don’t know what is.
No idea why Casey left him in the game. Cannot logically defend that. 5-2 USC now
This is getting ridiculous.
That’s baseball, one of the best hit balls results in a DP to end the inning. Still no excuse for leaving Childs in when he isn’t fooling anyone.
Going to the 4th with SC up 5-2
Kind of funny that this game is really crucial to the Beavers’ hosting hopes and there really isn’t any sense of urgency from Casey. That’s fairly alarming.
Kavin Keyes actually got a ball in the air and got a base hit. Surprising.
Beavs are hitting a lot of pop ups, to me this shows a lack of focus.
USC’s pen is solid.
This doesn’t look promising.
Taylor Starr coming in now. About an inning late.
Schultz with what …5 K’s for 6 BF this weekend?
Beavers really aren’t getting anything from their lead-off hitter these days. Gordon, Matthews and Barnes really haven’t been doing much there.
Really need Dunn to get a hit here.
Two more K’s and a pop out. This team really frustrates me.
This game is over. Beavers dropping a crucial series to an inferior opponent. Bad, bad loss
Good gosh man…..first of all, chill out!!
Secondly, still plenty of innings left and only down 3.
Chill out? I’m fine. It’s called the truth. 9 outs to go against one of the best bullpens in the conference. Who knows how much the Beavers will be down after this inning? This team just doesn’t have the feel of a team that is going to make a comeback.
I’ll be legitimately surprised if they come back and win. I’ll be happy if they win but I’m being realistic here.
So what is it then? The game is still going on? I thought you said it was over
Clearly wasn’t in the literal sense. You’re reaching.
Hmm…sure sounds like it to me:
“This game is over. Beavers dropping a crucial series to an inferior opponent. Bad, bad loss.”
Alright, since you don’t understand, it was meant as “This one is as good as over” and that since I thought they’d definitely lose then that would be a bad, bad loss. Sorry I didn’t clarify enough for you.
It is really concerning how the offense can start so well and then just disappear. They disappear at different points every game. Even if their 7-1 win over Oregon the offense disappeared in the final 4-5 innings.
The quality of the ducks pitchers went up considerably as well. That midweek game threw both teams in opposite directions imo.
That game didn’t throw either team in any direction. Ducks playing well this weekend, Beavers aren’t. Midweek game didn’t mean a whole lot as far as this weekend goes.
Well, the beavs were playing well, and now they are not. The ducks played crappy, and now they are not. That is all I am saying..
Ducks are playing Cal. That helps. Cal is average at best. Ducks do have good pitching and their offense has found ways to get the job done, can’t say the same for OSU. No idea what’s up with the Beavers. Offense has just disappeared again. 3 hits and 2 runs in the first, 5 hits and no runs the next 7 innings. Disappointing.
5-2 USC through 6 1/2 innings. Beavers have 3 hits in the last 6 innings.
6-2 USC and they have another runner in scoring position
Beavers down 6-2 going to the 8th. Conforto, Dunn and Gorton due up
Conforto pops out, Dunn singles, Gorton pops out and Keyes singles. 2 on and 2 outs for Dylan Davis
Dylan Davis has been bad for a while now.
All conference play. Has had all kinds of trouble adjusting to the breaking balls and off speed pitches. He’s always out in front and waving at pitches well outside of the zone. I thought by now he would make some adjustments but he’s having a tough time. That’s why it was key for Keyes to break out of his season long slump in conference play but he’s failed to do so. Beavers have to rely on Smith, Conforto, Dunn and Gorton for damn near everything and when they have a tough weekend the Beavers can’t score.
6-2 Trojans going to the 9th. Rodriguez, Tommasini, Barnes due up
Beavers lose 6-2 and lose the series
Beavers had 3 hits and 2 runs in the first inning, 6 hits and 0 runs the final 8 innings of play.
Beavs didn’t play horrible, but this series summed them up well–never know what is going to show up on a given weekend.
Beavers easily could have swept, just didn’t get enough timely hitting. This weekend summed up the offense well, specifically today. Offense appears to be swinging it well and then disappears. Very inconsistent. Dan Child wasn’t good today but 2 runs simply isn’t enough to win. They scored a grand total of 6 runs the final 22 innings of the series.
Went to the game today. Pretty decent Beaver fan turn out. It seemed like almost every ball the Trojans hit were being hit hard throughout the game. I was assuming that meant the pitchers (Child especially) were missing their spots. The Beavs had a few tough breaks where balls were hit hard, just right to a defender, but for the most part the offense was pretty stagnant. This was definitely a rough series to lose.
Jared Cunningham sighting:
My buddy told me he’s been playing a little with the IBL (local league called the Internnational Basketball League) He’s playing for the Portland Chinooks, which features a few player you may recognize like David Lucas and Lathen Wallace. Salem and the Couv also have team where you’ll find a few former OSU and Portland State guys, among players from other colleges. I think I’ll check out the next game since it’s only a few miles from where I live.
Link added for the Portland Chinooks Team page
http://www.ibl.com/portland_chinooks/
It’s good to see Lathen back on his feet after what happened last year.
this is a different jared cunningham. he went to cleveland state and is 6’9”.
funny, thanks for catching that. up until yesterday, the team website didn’t have his data for Height/weight and college updated, they were all blank, so I made the assumption it was our guy.
“I thought they both made some good throws and plays in general,” Riley said. “I feel like we have two starting quarterbacks right now.”
Oh no, not again. :(
Lets not jump the gun here.
The time to decide who is starting QB is halftime of the first game. You don’t want to give the opposition all summer to game plan a presumptive stater. Look how Riley totally outfoxed all the teams that game planned for Katz all summer…. see how it works??? JB
Wait a minute 3-9… never mind.
Hey, dont knock it…..3 wins….
Who knows, we might come to look on that last season as a GOOD ONE….
…..anyone got that suicide hotline number? aaaarrrg!
What impressed me about that strategy was how he confused the Wisconsin D with the running threat of Katz in the game. That REALLY worked, with safeties cheating up to stop the run and Katz burning them deep and all….
….until it was 4th and 30. Then you bring in Hecker for a timely negative seven yard punt. JB
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/video-oregon-spring-game-honors-local-military-jersey-054509445.html
I just don’t understand why you all hate the ducks so.
A couple of things come to mind after watching these videos:
Can’t they just honor the troops, without making a video to show off how awesome they are for honoring the troops? Shameless self promotion
Anybody else thinks it’s strange they allowed the flag to touch the ground, especially in the presence of the military? It may have looked cool how they rolled the stars and stripes out during the national anthem, but letting the flag touch the ground is a major no-no.
Did they put Oregon State uniforms on their QB’s? I know they wanted them to stand out so the defense would know not to touch them in this spring game, but they looked very Orange and Black to me. Odd choice.
On your first… no.
On your second… I was going to say something, but I’ve seen so many people disrespect the flag in their attempts to honor it that it doesn’t really faze me anymore.
On your third… haven’t we always said they are really wanting to just wear our colors?
Pathetic response and screams of jealousy.
A. Those are not Oregon Videos. One was shot by a fan on a phone. Secondly, would you rather Oregon honor the soldiers and officers in a dark basement somewhere? Showing them respect in public and letting the troops be part of something is showing them honor. What is wrong with that? By all accounts the soldiers had a great time and were very appreciative. Tons of food and money were raised to help those in need. The players love it and so did the fans. So what is your real beef? That’s right, jealousy. You can try to slice it any other way, but a blind person can see what your driver is. Your name alone lets me know all I need to know about what you focus on, and it isn’t the Beavers.
B. It wasn’t a flag. It was a bunch of streamers that represented a flag. Big difference. No flag touched the ground.
C. Whatever lets you sleep better at night.
The previous post was aimed at NCAA_viOlation’s post. Not Jack’s.
Haha, he’s scared to have Jack let loose on him.
Look, you really don’t need to apologize for your school, but at least get it right when you do. That first video was posted on youtube under the “Official Oregon Ducks Channel” with the moniker “GoDucks.com”, meaning it IS an Oregon video. You know what else might have given it away? The big f’ing “O” in the bottom right hand corner of the screen maybe?
i think my beef was pretty evident from my original post, so I don’t think I need to reply on that.
Jealous? maybe of the success that program is having currently while not being happy with the direction of the OS program currently, but guess what? That’s a common topic on this blog, you should know that.
I guess a flag really is just a collection of colored threads representing a flag if you boil it down, so I can see your point there, I guess….
I sleep great by the way, but it has nothing to do with uniform colors. Was just pointing out what looked like an odd choice of colors for the Oregon program to use in their spring game. Couldn’t find anything other than Orange and Black? really?
Obviously the second video is from a fan’s cam.
Meh…
It’s a good thing that they did. It was just done poorly in my estimation. Instead of “this is why we do this” it turned into a “look what we did” thing. Still that’s not entirely their fault. It’s as much our fault for not speaking out (or demanding that those who have the public voices do so) about the why of the situation on a daily basis. That’s what creates this context.
The flag thing is no worse than the disrespect of the flag in its display on the The Dalles Dam. In fact, I would say that one is worse since it’s run by the ACoE. They should know better.
And if I wanted to counter-slam the choice of colors on the QB’s, I would say, “We just wanted to choose colors which would let our defense know that the QB’s are playing two-hand touch.”
Although… if you change the ugly font, lose all the logos on the helmet, chest and shoulders, run a wide orange stripe down the leg and add a “STATE” to the “OREGON” on the chest (which looks strangely like the OSU athletic font), then we’re looking at a pretty sharp uni.
Damn… maybe he’ll throw some more chum in the water since this one failed to elicit a JackAttack. They are always fun reading… JB
UofDuck must be the guy swimming in this video. Not sure who the robot is, maybe Bendbeaver? gets tired and decides to rest

I don’t know. I’m torn by stuff like this. On the one hand, service members and their families deserve recognition for their sacrifices. On the other hand, they get it at a glorified two hand touch waste of a beautiful spring day?
And where does all the money gathered from this day go if it’s “dedicated” to our military? Do all proceeds from merch sales and commissions go to non-profit veterans organizations who truly need the dough? Or does it get plowed back into UO athletics, making this dedication nothing more than glad-handing?
I think events like this can be good if they’re taken in a more respectful, somber tone. Only a small minority of those who attended have an inkling of the incredible sacrifices our military give for us to play and watch these diddly little games.
I’ll give credit to Kelly for probably knowing the reality of it all and making stuff like this happen. He has traveled to visit the military in places where the military doesn’t want to be. But it all gets swallowed up by what appears to be more of an institutional marketing ploy in the end.
The ultimate example of why I think these things comes in the article and the videos themselves. Is there a reason they’re honoring the military? Or is it just something they felt like doing?
The disconnect between this happy spring game situation and the reality that we are still involved in a war isn’t altogether their fault. When was the last time you’ve seen any reporting by the mainstream media or cable news outlets concerning said war? Besides Bill Moyers, who tells us on a regular basis about the actual sacrifices of our service members and families? And even that doesn’t account for the biggest factor in deployed military deaths, suicide.
Toss in the way we treat vets in this country, and I don’t get warm fuzzies over this “dedication.” It means about as much to me as the yellow ribbon on the back of some woman’s SUV who’s yelling at me because she almost ran me over in the parking lot at Jerry’s… while I’m loading my truck and wearing one of my old service covers.
On this we definately agree. A blog worth checking out– http://www.unknownsoldiersblog.com/2012/05/bigger-than-day.html
ESPN college gameday is holding a vote via facebook, for a fan-base to have a gameday commercial filmed on their campus. Washington State is already in 3rd place which I thought was pretty funny.

Also hearing that OSU is very late to the game, but Coach Rob may be bending Aaric Armstead’s ear for a visit. Hawai’i is the only school he’s considering who wasn’t late to the game (UNM and Arky), so you never know.

He’s a boss!
RIP, Junior.
I’m never allowing my boy to play football. Duerson, Easterling and now Seau… and CTE is affecting so many other former players as well.
To be entirely fair, as long as your son doesn’t become a Running back, Linebacker, or an undersized Wide receiver at an elite level, he won’t have any issue.
Since two of those positions are primarily African American, such that there are an extremely low number of white players at that position in the NFL, and even college, your only issue needs to be if your son becomes a good Linebacker, as opposed to any of the other positions he could play(QB,S,OL,K,TE,DL)
So, basically, 15% chance of picking the right position, and 1% chance of being that good at it.
How do you know Jack isn’t African American, or his kid? :)
To answer BM… CTE affects almost every position. Esterling, Alex Karras, Justin Strzelczyk and Terry Long were O-linemen. Duerson was a safety. Andre Waters was a DB.
Even Chris Henry was found to have brain damage, which might have explained a lot of his off-field troubles.
To answer NCAA… I’m not from Africa, but I have plenty of friends who are African-American. They’re all of different races though. And only the Brit from Kenya likes football. So I’m not sure what any of this has to do with it.
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/08/head-blows-on-the-football-field/
I was wrong, though OL’s and DL’s take the least acceleration to the brain, they take it the most often. IT is possible that subconcussive hits may cause CTE. Though it is unlikely in all individuals. QB’s also take hits fairly rarely, but RB’s take the hardest hits. LB’s take hard hits often. WR’s are not mentioned, but it seems obvious that there is a possibility to get drilled especially hard if you are undersized(a la Chris Henry who was only 200 lbs at 6’4″).
Safeties tend to fall on two ends of the spectrum. We know that there are some that hit hrd and often. But looking at injury rates by position, it would seem that Safeties are barely getting hit at all. Although based upon injury rates, OL’s would seem to be off the hook too…
anyway, QB’s today are protected, but again, the level at which you have to go to to make CTE a a major issue unless you are either a RB/LB/WR is very high it would appear.
In fact, a major issue to OL’s and DL’s in retirement, and even in their careers, is the fact that they need to keep so much excess weight on them, which is not healthy.
http://news.health.com/2012/01/17/head-injuries-weight-nfl-players/
As you can see, fatter NFL players and ex-players tend to do significantly worse on cognitive tests.
However, fat people in general perform worse on these. So there might be some acceleration of the effect for linemen.
I would have liked to have seen “normal” weighted players used as a third study group. And maybe some heavy non-players as a fourth. I realize they’re reporting their findings of those groups based on aggregates of previous reports. But I like comprehensive and uniform testing procedures to confirm the aggregation.
And while weight appears to be a factor, do we think the constant collisions might have something to do with it as well?
Anyway, interesting stuff. I’m not going to let my boy get fat either.
O-Line and D-Line are pretty bad too. Safety can be for a guy like Ronnie Lott. Plus safety and special teams often go hand in hand. Considering how many QBs get concussions every year, that’s not really safe either. It’s just not a safe game.
When I heard about Seau, the first thing I thought of was OJ Simpson and the double homicide he committed and the comparison to Seau’s domestic assault arrest a couple years back. Could both be related to brain trauma both players likely suffered while in the NFL?
Scary stuff.
NASCAR did a lot to improve safety after Dale Earnhart’s death. Hopefully the NFL can do the same?
Last year 3 games were highlighted, comparing Riley to Hannibal, that would be pivotal to a successful campaign. Of those, Riley and OSU went 0 for 3 and the season spiraled downward.
This year the key games to get to 6 wins or more are easier to win but even more crucial.
@UCLA and Utah are games OSU must deliver victories at for OSU to likely not have a 3rd consecutive losing season. Riley needs a Trebia victory and if he doesn’t get a Trasimene followup with Utah at home then he will have to find another. @Stanford is this year’s Cannae that will be the toughest but still a huge opportunity for OSU now that Luck is gone.
Riley as Hannibal Take Deux:
http://beaverbyte.com
You do realize that Custer and Hannibal were both flamboyant military leaders who led their men into battle with verve. Do you not?
In fact, Custer was duped by the enemy in much the same way Hannibal was… when Hannibal’s army was decimated by the Romans.
So… you compare Riley to Custer, but you say he’s no Hannibal. Any student of history looks at your reasoning and knows that you’re saying Riley is a flamboyant leader of men, a brilliant tactician who, early in his career, scored huge victories during great campaigns. But later in his career he outran his resources, made a crucial mistake and cost his program its life… except he didn’t.
Maybe you can say that Riley, like Hannibal, was too stubborn to adapt his tactics over time. He relied too much on the lumbering elephants on his front lines, and he succumbed to the diversions presented by a better tactician in Scipio.
Heh, heh…
Scipio was the first to institute the spread offense?
Hannibal recruited better than Riley and had a superior force at Zama. Mike Riley has never had that luxury.
Damn, you guys are OLD…
….what was your fav beer back in Roman times?
I gotta say, the interest in this site is hugely less this spring….the football interest was 10x last year, over this year.
….not that I blame anyone……wait, I blame RILEY!!
It might help if we weren’t talking about football in a week old baseball thread?
Favorite beer?
I liked the imports. And let me tell you, Rome was in the import business back then. My fav beer was a Mexican brew called 20.
