A truly huge series. Beavers have a very, very slim chance at a conference title, in order to have a chance against Oregon they have to sweep the Cougars and then must sweep Oregon. It can be done but not likely because of how inconsistent this group has been and it is a tall order. Hopefully we see this group begin to put it all together this weekend. Starting pitching is definitely in the Beavers’ favor. Overall the Beavers’ offense is better as far as producing runs. They’re third in the conference runs scored, Cougars are 6th. Cougars have the edge in batting average but Beavers have the better on base %. So, the Beavers have the edge in starting pitching and the slightest of edges offensively, but have a feeling the bullpen will play a big role.
Cougars’ bullpen may actually be worse than the Beavers’ bullpen. Only 3 guys who come out of the bullpen have an ERA below 5. Beavers can do some damage against that ‘Pen.
With Keyes and Hayes starting to heat up, the offense should be productive this weekend, hopefully they finally start hitting with RISP like they did on Tuesday. If they do that I like their chances at a sweep. They’re better than WSU in all the major areas, if they’re focused they should do well. I’d hope they would be focused considering how critical the series is.
Tyler Smith with the bunt base hit as the Cougars’ 2nd baseman got over to first base way too late. Runners on first and second and no outs for Conforto
Michael Conforto with a three run bomb to left. 3-0 Beavers. Conforto now tied for first again in home runs with 12 and now has 66 RBI’s. He’s so good.
And Wetzler walks 2 of the first 3 batters he’s facing. He’s pitching like a guy with a one run lead, not a 4 run lead. Needs to pound the zone and pitch to contact.
4-1 Beavers after an inning. Wetzler walked 4 guys in the first. Beavers are going to have to go to the ‘Pen much earlier than I’m sure Casey would like. Wetzler had to have thrown 35+ pitches at least
All we needed was one or two of these guys that have been in season-long slumps (i.e. Hayes, Keyes, etc) to get hot. Keyes has been better as of late, and obviously Hayes is crushing tonight. It makes the offense more balanced by adding two solid Left handed bats.
Completely agree. What it also does is gives Conforto protection. Pitchers won’t be able to just pitch around Conforto when you got a guy like Hayes who is killing the ball, batting behind him. Teams will have to pitch to Conforto and that gives him an opportunity to do damage
Unacceptable. Beavers get runners on second and third and no outs and don’t score. That simply can’t happen. Keyes was jumping at the ball and struck out, Dylan Davis had a similar approach. Some of the guys get far too anxious with runners in scoring position. They would be fine if they just relax.
Cole Brocker gives up another home run. Solo shot this time. 8-2 Beavers. He can only go 2 batters without giving up an extra base hit. Yeskie and Casey know this but keep going to him.
Bullpen has gone 3 1/3 innings and given up just 2 hits and 1 run on a virtually meaningless solo home run. Boyd looking more like the 2011 version of himself. Solid job by the bullpen tonight. Could be a confidence boost if they keep this up all weekend.
Game is tied at 2 now. This where the Beavers needed Fry to come out and throw a shutdown inning and get the offense back up at the plate. But he’s been a mess so far.
Smith drives one to deep right with Barnes on at first and it was called a catch but the right fielder dropped it. Bad break for the Beavers. Two down for Conforto
Hate the sacrifice with Smith. He’s a guy who goes the other way consistently hit and run there would give the Beavers a chance at a bigger inning. Their pitcher is hardly shutting down the Beavers’ offense. Hate giving away free outs.
Beavers cannot catch a break. Gordon smokes a ball that would have scored a run but the 2nd baseman stretches out and makes the play. Tied at 4 going to the bottom of the 6th
Cougars have been far more fortunate today. They’ve just found more holes and caught more breaks on hits. Beavers smoke a pitch and it’s caught, Cougars hit a grounder back to Fry and it goes off his glove. May just be one of those games. If the umps make the correct call in the third and the Beavers may have scored 2-3 runs in the inning, instead they only got one. Really unfortunate for the Beavers.
And the Beavers blow a golden opportunity to tie the game. Again, the decision to bunt Dunn was questionable at best. He had just crushed a ball the previous at-bat and provides the Beavers a power threat and is a good hitter. Keyes has struggled so far this series, would think the coaching staff would be more comfortable with Ryan Dunn hitting there. But I guess not.
Gordon singles and it’s a two base error by the left fielder and scores Keyes from first to make it 7-3. That should have been a single but it took a really bad bounce. Beavers very fortunate there, bad break for the Cougars.
Really was surprised the Beavers didn’t pinch run for Hayes. It cost them a run and could be a big run. 7-4 Beavers in the bottom of the 9th. Lead-off batter singles. Child done for the day
So next week OSU plays UO. UO also plays University of Portland on Tuesday and Wednesday next week. How will those 2 extra games affect them coming into our series? As far as conference record goes, OSU is 15-12 and UO is 19-8, so even if we sweep, Oregon will own a better conference record than us.
That’s OSU’s fault, they would have as good of a conference mark if not better if not for some bad breaks and the bullpen blowing some games. Losses to Utah, Washington, game 2 against Arizona, game 1 against Stanford, yesterday against Wazzu are all games the Beavers probably should have won. Yesterday they just couldn’t get a break to save their life. Umps blew numerous calls. The worst obviously was the right fielder dropping the ball and the ump blowing the call. Could have meant 2-3 runs or more that inning and completely changes the game. Then the “HBP” in the 9th changed it as well. So, it really is the Beavers’ fault they aren’t getting a regional but there have been good signs as of late.
Hayes, Barnes, Keyes have been picking it up lately, they’re giving Conforto some much needed protection. Tyler Smith is starting to get back on track and Gordon has been really solid. The offense getting hot and hitting to their capabilities couldn’t come at a better time. Heading into the postseason with these guys swinging so well is great.
Beavers are most likely heading to Gary, Indiana for the Purdue Regional. This would be ideal for the Beavers. I think they would win that regional.
I hope the Beavers give Dylan Davis as the closer over the weekend against Oregon. Not really any better options and give him some experience as a closer before the postseason. Then it can get him ready for the playoffs where you’ll need a closer and you can better assign roles to other members of the bullpen.
A series win over UO would be a nice way to head into the postseason. Hopefully they get it done.
Dan Spencer has been fired at Texas Tech. I wonder if Pat Casey would consider bringing him back as pitching coach next season. I’d be okay with letting Yeskie go. Hasn’t exactly impressed me as a pitching coach.
Let’s go Wetzler! The pride of Clackamas High School (aside from Phil Johnson and Justin Kahut)
A truly huge series. Beavers have a very, very slim chance at a conference title, in order to have a chance against Oregon they have to sweep the Cougars and then must sweep Oregon. Go Beavs, get it done this weekend.

Lead-off single by Ryan Barnes
Tyler Smith with the bunt base hit as the Cougars’ 2nd baseman got over to first base way too late. Runners on first and second and no outs for Conforto
Now a balk. Runners on second and third and no outs
Michael Conforto with a three run bomb to left. 3-0 Beavers. Conforto now tied for first again in home runs with 12 and now has 66 RBI’s. He’s so good.
To right rather.
Danny Hayes with a bomb to right center as Conforto and Hayes go back-to-back and it’s 4-0 Beavers
Dunn singles up the middle. Beavers are teeing off on Chleborad. Doesn’t feel like he’ll last much longer.
Keyes strikes out and then Rodriguez walks. Runners on first and second and 1 out for Dylan Davis
4-0 Beavers after half an inning
Wetzler pitched poorly with a nice lead against the Utes, he has a nice lead right away tonight, hopefully he pitches better this time
The WSU announcer makes me appreciate Mike Parker. This guy’s voice is no nasal.
And Wetzler walks 2 of the first 3 batters he’s facing. He’s pitching like a guy with a one run lead, not a 4 run lead. Needs to pound the zone and pitch to contact.
Horrible start by Wetzler. He can’t pitch with a big lead
4-1 Beavers after an RBI groundout. 2 down and runners at 2nd and 3rd
Wetzler looking pretty shaky, but somehow manages to give up only 1 run after walking 4 and nearly walking the final batter with bases loaded.
Wetzler really has no command at all.
4-1 Beavers after an inning. Wetzler walked 4 guys in the first. Beavers are going to have to go to the ‘Pen much earlier than I’m sure Casey would like. Wetzler had to have thrown 35+ pitches at least
Gorton with a lead-off single
Conforto walked with 2 outs. Runners on first and second for Danny Hayes
Danny Hayes with a three run homer to right and it’s 7-1 Beavers
All we needed was one or two of these guys that have been in season-long slumps (i.e. Hayes, Keyes, etc) to get hot. Keyes has been better as of late, and obviously Hayes is crushing tonight. It makes the offense more balanced by adding two solid Left handed bats.
Completely agree. What it also does is gives Conforto protection. Pitchers won’t be able to just pitch around Conforto when you got a guy like Hayes who is killing the ball, batting behind him. Teams will have to pitch to Conforto and that gives him an opportunity to do damage
7-1 Beavers after 1 1/2 innings. Beavers have now given Wetzler 18 runs in his last 2 starts.
7-1 Beavers after 2 innings. Wetzler has been the human rain delay so far
7-1 Beavers after 3 1/2 innings
7-1 Beavers after 4 innings.
Lead-off walk by Hayes to start the fifth
Dunn then doubles. Runners on second and third and no outs for Kavin Keyes
Keyes strikes out looking and Rodriguez is then hit by a pitch. Bases loaded and 1 out for Dylan Davis
Really poor at-bat by Dylan Davis. Hayes is forced out at the plate. Bases loaded and 2 outs for Ryan Gorton
Ryan Barnes now at first and Joey Matthews in right. Keyes was taken out of the game.
And Yeskie goes to Brocker? I don’t understand that.
It works out nicely for the Beavers as Brocker comes in and gets a strikeout. 7-1 Beavers through 5 innings
Ryan Barnes solo home run and it’s 8-1 Beavers. When did the Beavers turn into the ’27 Yankees?
Thanks for the running commentary. Come on,bullpen
Two out single by Ryan Dunn. Conforto at 2nd. Joey Matthews now up
8-1 Beavers after 5 1/2 innings
Cole Brocker gives up another home run. Solo shot this time. 8-2 Beavers. He can only go 2 batters without giving up an extra base hit. Yeskie and Casey know this but keep going to him.
Boyd comes in to get final two outs. 8-2 Beavers after 6 innings of play
Boyd comes in and 5 up and 5 down for him as he strikes out all 3 Cougs in the 7th. 8-2 Beavers going to the 8th
Back-to-back bunt singles by Barnes and Smith, then Conforto is hit by a pitch. Bases loaded and no outs for Danny Hayes
Sac fly by Hayes, Smith moves to third with 1 out. 9-2 Beavers and Dunn is up
Is the announcer trying to sound as goofy as possible?
Wild pitch and Smith scores. 10-2 Beavers
10-2 Beavers after 7 1/2 innings
Boyd gives up a hit and a walk with 2 outs. Trying to throw perfect pitches with 2 outs. Just needs to pitch to contact
10-2 Beavers after 8 innings
Bullpen has gone 3 1/3 innings and given up just 2 hits and 1 run on a virtually meaningless solo home run. Boyd looking more like the 2011 version of himself. Solid job by the bullpen tonight. Could be a confidence boost if they keep this up all weekend.
Gordon singles, then Ryan Gorton singles with 1 out. Runners on first and second and 1 out for Ryan Barnes
My bad, was actually 2 outs there. Barnes flies out to retire the side. 10-2 Beavers going to the bottom of the 9th
Matt Boyd now in at first as Schultz takes over on the mound
Schultz retires the Cougars in order in the 9th and the Beavers win 10-2.
2 out walk by Michael Conforto
Danny Hayes two run shot and it’s 2-0 Beavers. Hayes with his 3rd home run in two days
2-0 Beavers after a half inning
Fry struggling to throw strikes early on
Game is tied at 2 now. This where the Beavers needed Fry to come out and throw a shutdown inning and get the offense back up at the plate. But he’s been a mess so far.
Another hit. Fry may just not have it tonight
Looked like Dunn had a play at the plate but didn’t throw it for some reason. 3-2 Cougars
3-2 Cougars after an inning
Keyes HBP to start the 2nd
Really, really bad mental error by Keyes. Gets thrown out on a double play
Picked off after wandering too far off first on a strikeout by Jake Rodriguez.
3-2 Cougars after 2 innings
Smith drives one to deep right with Barnes on at first and it was called a catch but the right fielder dropped it. Bad break for the Beavers. Two down for Conforto
That was robbery. It was clearly not a catch, even if it looked like an impressive athletic play by the outfielder. Umps blew that call big time
It was a horrible call. Smith could see it rounding 1st where was the ump?
Hayes RBI single ties it at 3 after 2 1/2 innings
Fry allows a hit and a walk but gets a DP to end the third. 3-3 going to the 4th
Fry just doesn’t have good command today. 6 hits in 3+ innings. Can’t command his fastball
Gorton’s lackadaisical play allows a run to score.
Lead-off walk by Barnes to begin the 5th
Hate the sacrifice with Smith. He’s a guy who goes the other way consistently hit and run there would give the Beavers a chance at a bigger inning. Their pitcher is hardly shutting down the Beavers’ offense. Hate giving away free outs.
4-3 Cougars going to the 6th
Lead-off double by Ryan Dunn
Jake Rodriguez RBI single ties it at 4
Beavers cannot catch a break. Gordon smokes a ball that would have scored a run but the 2nd baseman stretches out and makes the play. Tied at 4 going to the bottom of the 6th
And then the Cougs hit one off Fry’s glove for an infield hit
Cougars lead 5-4
Kind of strange to see Jace Fry struggle so much with his command and get hit so hard
5-4 Cougars after 6 innings
stream for game 2?
forgot it was televised
Beavs have Top of the order and they go down in order
Cougars have been far more fortunate today. They’ve just found more holes and caught more breaks on hits. Beavers smoke a pitch and it’s caught, Cougars hit a grounder back to Fry and it goes off his glove. May just be one of those games. If the umps make the correct call in the third and the Beavers may have scored 2-3 runs in the inning, instead they only got one. Really unfortunate for the Beavers.
Big spot for Scott. Hopefully Gorton doesn’t let one go by here
Big at-bat by Hayes coming up. Could use him working a walk or hey, another home run will work too
Hayes continues to be on fire. Line drive single to center. Ryan Dunn up
Dunn sacrificing and Hayes moves to second. Not sure about that move. Let’s see how this plays out. Keyes up with 1 out
Keyes grounds out. Big out. 2 down with Hayes at third and Rodriguez is up
And the Beavers blow a golden opportunity to tie the game.
It is definitely questionable. But in the 8th with two good hitters behind him you can at least understand the thought process.
5-4 Cougars going to the 9th. Gorton, Gordon and Barnes due up.
Here’s where they coug-it
Noted!
Lead-off walk by Gorton. Max Gordon is up
Horrible to bunt there. Steal the base or swing away.
And now there’s 2 outs.
CLUTCH RBI double by Tyler Smith. Game tied at 5
Tied at 5 as it goes to the bottom of the 9th
Bad break for the Beavers. Ball went off the bat and fouled away but the home plate umpire ruled it a HBP
Works out for Casey, but the probably of getting a hit with 1 out in the 9th is ~41%. Much less than the probability of successfully stealing a base.
Beavs are getting jobbed by the umps and they weren’t close plays they just blew them.
Bases are juiced with 1 out for Jones
Welp, this doesn’t look good
Boyd gets the popup. Whew, that was ball 4.
Huge out by Boyd.
Need one more. These umps are going to make it difficult..haha
Wow…grand slam haha
And it wasn’t Brocker.
That was a terrible pitch. Heartbreaking loss for the guys. Offense came back in the 9th and the bullpen again loses the game
At
Least it wasn’t another one run loss
Really would have gone righty v righty if we had a pen
The bullpen has been pretty bad. That was a brutal way to lose.
1 out bunt single by Tyler Smith in the first
No score heading to the bottom of the first
Pop up behind second and Tommasini doesn’t even bother to look for it and it drops. Runners on first and second and 1 out for the Cougars
Dan Child getting no help from the defense. Bases loaded and 1 out now
Child gets a DP to get out of the inning. No score after 1
Lead-off single by Dunn to start the 2nd
With 1 out Barnes lines out and Keyes swings and misses on a hit and run and Dunn is thrown out
No score heading to the bottom of the 2nd
Lineout DP ends the 2nd. No score heading to the third
Lead-off single by Jake Rodriguez. Tommasini will be bunting
Rodriguez up to second on the Tommasini sacrifice. One down for Max Gordon
Max Gordon RBI double gives the Beavers a 1-0 lead
Tyler Smith singles behind second base. Runners on first and third and 1 out for Michael Conforto
Michael Conforto is Roy Hobbs
Michael Conforto with a three run bomb and it’s 4-0 Beavers. 13 home runs and 69 RBI’s for Conforto on the season. 69 RBI’s is a new school record
never walk away from the screen when Conforto is at the plate.
I’m the WSU announcer and my nose is plugged.
He’s awful, if I were a WSU fan, I’d have to mute every game
What’s a comfortable lead for the bullpen? 10 runs? 20 runs? 30 runs?
I’ll say 14 run lead today.
Spectacular play by Max Gordon to make the diving catch in left center field. 4-0 Beavers after 3 innings
4-1 Beavers on a sac fly. Jones on at third with 1 out for the Cougars
Another sac fly makes it 4-2 Beavers
4-2 Beavers after 4 innings
Smith singles with one out and the Cougars are making a pitching change. Conforto due up
Hayes walks out, Conforto advances to 2nd with 2 outs. Dunn is up
Two run double by Ryan Dunn and it’s 6-2 Beavers
Child leaving the ball up today. Not at his best
6-3 Beavers with Ard up at the plate with a runner at third
6-3 Beavers after 5 innings
Lead-off single by Keyes in the top of the 6th
Gordon singles and it’s a two base error by the left fielder and scores Keyes from first to make it 7-3. That should have been a single but it took a really bad bounce. Beavers very fortunate there, bad break for the Cougars.
Tyler Smith walks and Conforto is up with runners on the corners and 2 outs
7-3 Beavers after 5 1/2 innings
…aaaannnd, Michael Conforto takes a quick break from being an ultra-stud…
Him and me both..
7-3 Beavers after 6 innings of play
Barnes two out single. Keyes due up
I thought Rodriguez was touted as a better hitter.
7-4 Beavers now on a sac fly by the Cougars
7-4 Beavers after 7 innings
Sending a runner with Conforto at the plate is really strange
7-4 Beavers heading to the bottom of the 8th
Child over 100 pitches and still threw 95 MPH
Danny Hayes doubles
With Child not having a 1-2-3 inning yet today do you bring him out in the 9th?
Really was surprised the Beavers didn’t pinch run for Hayes. It cost them a run and could be a big run. 7-4 Beavers in the bottom of the 9th. Lead-off batter singles. Child done for the day
Absolutely unbelievable that there was not a pinch runner in there! It certainly did cost a run.
Yeah, it’s been automatic all season that Dettman comes in.
Boyd in for Bryant? He’s thrown a lot of pitches the last two days, wonder how effective he’ll be.
1 down in the 9th
Now Yeskie is going to Cole Brocker. This is a terrible decision
Remember he’s good for two batters
And now Brocker walks the batter.
7-5 Beavers now. Runners on first and second and two outs
Dylan Davis coming in to pitch
Yeskie made a good move to get boyd out of there. Could you imagine if the cougs got back to back
walk offs..
This game is crazy. Davis? Eh. It’s just 1 out so it’s not a terrible move. I’d prefer Bryant.
Davis throwing some heat
Davis gets the save and the Beavers win 7-5.
I think we found our new closer.
Glad I was painting. This team makes too many games nail biters. Good win and thank god for
Conforto.

That would be great.
About the only positive for Yeskie this season is the (apparent) fact that he has stayed sober.
meh, managing to not get DUIs and staying sober are two different things
