Was the number so embarrassingly low that they quietly pulled the plug? Is this another failed marketing campaign, or do we give them 'til years end to meet the quota (using a defunct website)?
What happened is Riley acting like he could care less if he is 3-9, 4-8, 5-7, starts slow or whatever. It is all just the same to him based off his bland personality during Media Days. The man has no charisma. I was bored stiff watching him and did not leave feeling any better about the season or our recruiting efforts or direction as a program moving forward. Nothing to instill confidence that he can compete with the top teams. I’m really getting tired of waiting 9 months for football to roll back around and Riley is just the same old stiff seemingly more casual about actual results each year than the prior. :(
But do you know how close to 12,000 they got?
This campaign just sorta…fizzled…with no word either way.
I think they were doing all right, maybe almost 8K and then after the last two years it just stonewalled. Riley doesn’t do much to try to sell the program and it is costing us. Will be interesting where we fall for attendance this year. I don’t understand why they can’t have a commercial or something to promote the football season. Same stale approach every year of doing nothing much to drum up support. How about a flashy, somewhat edgy 20 second piece that shows Wheaton, Cooks, Mannion and some mean defense? Guess the defense didn’t have enough highlights last year. Just don’t get the marketing or lack thereof of OSU Football.
We are way too lackadaisical and I would think a yawn to most 18 year-olds. Kenyon Barner’s statement stands out to me. “Everyone wants to be fresh and brand new”. Everyone except ole OSU.
That could be OSU’s new slogan.

Just heard an ad on the radio, yesterday, with Wheaton pitching 3 game packages.
It stands out to you because you want to gather information to support your stance that Riley is stale or not ‘flashy’. If you look at what schools get the top recruiting classes, those tend to be the traditional powerhouses that maintain the same image year after year. Not “everyone” wants to be a Duck.
Riley is stale and not “flashy.” And I would be OK with that if he just emoted old school hard-nosed football. He can be a nice guy and say things like, “Gosh, I think our team will just slobber-knock their way through this next season. They’re working harder than I’ve ever seen a team work, and it will be neat to see them knock the opposition backward on every play. I know they’ll do it. This is about them, not me.”
I did like the mention of 1800 yards rushing. I’ve not heard Riley talk in such terms before, and it gives me hope that he is taking his team’s identity into the public realm. We as fans now know what we want to see from our offense. We will concentrate on those aspects and well-wish in order for it to happen. And we get to be as disappointed as Riley himself if it doesn’t happen. That benchmark may have been a slip when he said it, but it’s a hard number that I as a player would want to smash. I know Riley and the staff probably make these goals internally. But it’s not just about them. It’s about all of us. Let us all help, and he will be rewarded tenfold for a simple word.
Hmmm… it looks like Scout.com picked up on what I saw as well. What Riley said on stage may have seemed understated and coach speak to many. But what we saw was him saying something… sorry Byte… bold and powerful in Riley terms. I wonder who on the team broke him out of his cocoon. My usual suspects would Crichton and Wynn… and maybe Mannion. These are all take charge kids.

Bend, is the sun and heat getting to you. You have no idea what you are talking about. Even teams like Fresno State get better recruits than OSU does….why, because they have a “tradition” and attitude to win. There are many variables which attract a new recruit, not all are traditional power houses like you say. Mike Riley’s days of doing anything for our team are over. Oregon State needs a new athletic director with some vision and imagination and a new football coach who cares about winning. Get your head out of the sand………or something else.

Fightingbeav, I don’t know what I’m talking about? Maybe you’re joking, but Fresno’s 2012 class is ranked 114th. The majority of the teams that are consistently in the top 10 for recruiting are considered traditional power houses. Agreed that there are many variables in recruiting, and recruiting at Oregon State can improve, but not by following the lead of Oregon. If we don’t want to be called ‘little brother’, then we shouldn’t act like it.
Not everyone wants to be “Fresh and brand new”. There is a reason why the tried and true traditional programs….Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Notre Dame….. can renew their talent level every year.. I think its more true to say “everyone” wants to go to a potential winner.
The statements by Riley do seem to be a break with the past, and with his recent indifference. Thats good, and maybe a sign of renewed interest in winning. I will believe it when I see it.

Riley was more specific this year and I appreciate that. I am not rooting against him. I simply am rooting for wins and I need to see more fight and passion to take advantage of every down. I am glad Riley said the defense will be much better. We shall see.

Riley just does the same old thing. He always point to the team as the only catalist for winning or losing. The game as a whole is the responsibility on how good a head coach and his staff can train and prepare individual team players to execute what they are instructed to do on the field.
Today, Chip Kelley ran with the bulls in Spain. Mike Riley quietly said he was hopeful.
Jack, zip it. It seems you always come up with something and try to run the show. But you are only running a losing show. A few more months will tell the real story. Then what do you say. I’ll wager you a buck right now that after the first five games the Beavs are 1 – 4.

Not much new from Riley. He “hopes” for the young guys to show some growth. How about he expects the young guys to show some growth and if not, then it is the fault of the coaches for not improving the players that have been in the system.
I’m so tired of interviewers asking stupid fluff questions like “I’ve asked every coach this, and I’m going to ask you even if you didn’t go out recruiting this summer: In all your years of coaching, what’s your craziest travel story? Is there a suitcase still wandering around out there somewhere?”
There is some truth to comments about Riley not being interesting. At the bar-b-que in our cul-de-sac this weekend the high school guys were all talking about Kelly running with the bulls. Last summer he went to visit the troops. This is called MARKETING and Oregon finds a way to keep Oregon football in front of kids even when the coach is out of the country. Where was Riley this summer? In a hammock? He does have the “Life of Riley” with a lifetime contract.
I wouldn’t gaf if he was the dullest person on earth as long as his coaching record, his recruiting abilities, and his choice of assistant coaches and other staff made up for his lacklustre. But, they don’t. And, please, don’t play the saw about how hard it is to recruit and to bring good people to Corvallis. I’m sure you all took note of Mike Leach extolling Pullman, for heaven’s sake.
Chip Kelly goes to Pamplona, visits the troops, attends women’s bb and softball games, because that’s who he is – I doubt he does those things solely to promote O football.
It seems to me, it’s a little like physicians. Sometimes the best ones have not-so-great personalities but they are brilliant practitioners, whereas Dr. Exciting screws up a lot. However, evaluations require change and changes are made based upon the record.
Football games aren’t life and death, but Riley’s record is the issue – his personality, not so much.
If the last two years FB records were reversed, I think they would have got to that goal.
There’s just no enthusiasm now. Continuing the campaign would have been more embarrassing than quietly ending it. Just looking at this board, everyone has become resigned to losing. It’s a vicious cycle.
I’d say their marketing efforts are 100% better than just a few years ago. It’s just really hard to market a losing product. Say if the campaign started in after the ’07 season, it would have been a tremendous success. Timing is everything….
Hey! Speak for yourself. I expect this team to have a winning record at the very least… not 6-6… winning. I would be highly disappointed if they did less. And watching them step on the field for game one will tell me if the players have bought the same.
If you want me to be an optimist, then I can heartily say that I am amazed we won three games last year with the O-line we had. 2012’s O-line will be good compared to some of our best ever, let alone last season. That and watching them become the best ever over a series of several seasons gives me hope for the future. But the taste of last year’s play is just bitter. There is no discussion about Beav football without discussing the last two seasons. That’s what sucks.
The current generation of recruits have grown up in an environment of immediate gratification.
What happened 5 years ago is almost meaningless. What happened 10 years ago is meaningless as they were 7 or 8 years old then. That means that our 2001 Fiesta bowl is not on their radar. The last 2 years record is on their radar. We desperately need to have a winning season this year or we will go back to becoming the league doormat along with Colorado. The only comparison that is of interest to young kids is how you stack up against the rest of the league and are you winning. With 5 home conference games this is a make or break it season.
Does anyone know if Riley stayed in LA to recruit? We are so far behind the rest of the league with commits that it is now truly scary!
If what you said was true, then why do recruits go to UCLA?
We do want to simplify something complex like recruiting, do bad your paragraph is only part of the puzzle. If you’ve ever had a job where you were supposed to influence teenage boys, you’d know it’s not so easy to figure out.
Have you seen the campus that UCLA has to offer? Have you seen the girls on that campus? Easy to sell UCLA.
So you agree with me; recruits pick schools for reasons other than “how you stack up against the rest of the league and are you winning”.
I agree with part of what you’re saying, but if you haven’t spent a lot of time at OSU I’ll tell you there is no shortage of hot girls at OSU.
Understand, but a hot girl in clothes for rain and 55 degrees is very different than clothes for sun and 78.
I do agree that recruits have different motivations other than football when choosing a school, but I also agree that what OSU was 5-10 years ago doesn’t much matter, we need to win to get recruits. We are currently in a vicious loop.

Per that ever so skilled interviewer Lindsay Schnell, Riley says, “I’m actually going back to Texas for three days from here (media days) and then we dive in.” So, no, it appears he is not staying in LA (or going to Penn State) to recruit. But, then again, maybe the dedicated ol’ fox is doing some clandestine recruiting, we’ll see soon enough.
Evidently you didn’t read the entire Lindsay Schnell interview, otherwise you might have picked up this little bit of information:
Q: I know the rules are different for head coaches in football — have you been out on the road recruiting at all this summer?
A: I haven’t been on the road, but we do all the things that we can, which is mail-outs, all the stuff we put on our website, and maintain as much contact as we can. We can’t call them, but they can call us. We’ve initiated those relationships, so it’s an on-going process all summer.
It might not be the “hard-hitting” journalism you guys are looking for, but you might consider it education.
Read it all. You are aware that coaches can respond to contacts originated by players, right? That would cover guys in the LA area (and Penn St); I was just responding to the original question asking if Riley stayed in LA to talk to recruits.
I’ll stand by my low opinion of Lindsay’s work.
Of course I am aware of that, because Riley said “We can’t call them, but they can call us.”
He also said they “maintain as much contact as we can”. If there were people to visit with in LA, I would assume that he did based on his comment. You have no evidence to suggest otherwise.

The problem with Oregon State Athletics is not the head coaches, the records, nor any of the staff. As with anything, it’s always about who’s in charge of the money and where it goes. BDC likes spreading around the money to all programs including upgrading certain facilities such as the Basketball practice facility. Look how long it took Coach CR to get that to actually happen. The coaches are probably trying their best to convince BDC that image includes facilities, not just the record on the field; nor the players staying out of the media that reflects the university’s athletics in a negative way. What needs to change is the man in charge of the money and where it gets allocated.
When the football program does well, it generates more revenue for the athletic department; When the Basketball or Baseball team does well, they generate money for their team/sport. So we need someone that will look at the football team as an investment for the university, not treat it like all other sports like BDC does.
Look at Phil Knight, he puts money into UofO football, what do they gain from it? National recognition as well as better recruiting, bowl games, and multiple types of facilities. How can OSU compete with a university that has one large donor vs. a wide range of donors that doesn’t even equal 1 person’s average 0donation?
You have to invest money to make money. Yes, putting all your eggs in one basket is generally a bad idea, but in athletics, you have to look at what generates the money. That money for OSU is football. Why is football the primary money maker vs. basketball and baseball? The reason why is simply because football COULD put more OSU fans butts in the seats at Reser(expansion and better marketing, team, etc.), but it’s because it’s the easiest access for fans to watch live and spend money on season tickets. If OSU had a baseball stadium like LSU’s that holds 10,000 people, that would be close to a sell out if people had 3 day weekends because Corvallis is a long drive for anyone living outside of Corvallis.
My main point in this long long rant/observation, is that BDC does not budget enough money for the OSU football team to do anything but the status quo. Riley’s budget is so small compared to other coaches because BDC does equal budgets across the board for all sports. That’s probably why OSU has great to fantastic Gymnastics teams, wrestling teams, baseball teams, and soon basketball teams. The coaches also have to figure out what they can do between recruiting, facilities, management, coaching hires, and everything else when it comes to their budget allotment. BDC was fine for the past, but he’s the one that’s putting us behind in the times. Sad, but true. Track is making a comeback mainly because it will help recruiting in all sports as well as it needed to be darn near close to self supporting.

I’m actually getting excited for the season – I know there is a sincere lack of hope and despair for the up and coming schedule, but (granted this is without any rational thinking at my end) I think we will do better than expected.

I think the day people stop talking about The Beavs, is the day when it’s athletics starts to die. Nothing will kill a program like apathy.

Does OSU allow kegged beers on-site at tailgates, or do you just do it on the sly?
I’ve always thought not allowing beer kegs but saying yes to giant water coolers filled with 20-30% ABV jungle juice was odd.
We normally try to be as dicrete as possible – but at the same time, we only do this for big games (the keg that is) – for this year probably Wisconsin, defintely the civil war, and a few others. It really depends on how many people are planning on attending or are in town for the game.
I don’t believe the university would want us doing this, but the cleanup is easier and we always have sober drivers.
I stay away from the jungle juice – the sugar and cheap booze alone just destroys me until Tuesday of the following week.

I would agree with your sentiments if this was anywhere else, but the other programs get money and support from their fans, not BDC. We were asked for money and support over a long period of time for the hoops and track facillities. I would be pretty heated if the money I gave specifically for those projects suddenly went to football this or that.
Let the people who care about football take care of football. I agree that BDC should probably spend a majority of his time on that sport. But I don’t see anything to the contrary. I see Pat Casey chasing down funds for baseball. I see Coach Rob pushing the public for hoops funds. I hear Jim Zalesky asking for and getting money, inch by inch. And Kelly Sullivan talked for six years before he got T&F fans to give enough in order to put shovels in the ground.
Those sports are on their own as far as I can see. BDC shows up to make a speech or two and grab a shovel and a hard hat. But that’s about it.
Maybe fans of football should give for football, like fans of these other sports do for their programs. Then again, if it was as important to the coaches and fans of football, they would make it happen on their own… like the other programs do.
What my post was stating was the money from the LSU, Cincy, Penn State, (Soon to be Michigan game), and the Wisconsin game. Also, the Pac-12 Network revenue are all spread around the university athletics. I forget which article it was stated in, but it was something along the line that, “OSU football is the primary revenue for the OSU athletic department.” This tells me that any money the football team gets from what the team accomplishes without the fan bases donations goes to all sports, not just football.
If donations were the primary reason we aren’t getting Reser Stadium expanded, then we have no room to complain about expansion not happening because if we don’t cut a check specifying in the note section, “For expansion of Reser Stadium”, then pretty sure that money for “Football athletics” will go to what they deem is appropriate for the money, not what you thought you donated it for.

Imo the economy is going to take another big hit (in the downward direction). If I’m right then there’s a good chance that by this time next year a lot of people who currently attend games won’t be able to.
