What I saw today:
Nothing to complain about, really. I disagree with Riley taking a knee before the half, but otherwise he coached a good game with no major errors. Banker was getting a lot of love on TV…gotta wonder how much Bray is influencing the LBs (and thus overall D), as they seem the most improved unit. D-line looks surprisingly stout. Knew the ends would be very good, but the DTs are holding their own. Serviceable is good enough versus this level of competition. Not sure it will be versus elite teams (Oregon is probably the only elite team the Beavs play this year).
Offense looked good. Mannion played most of the game in a 10-15 yard box (many YAC for the WRs), which was a bit disturbing. Woods looked good, but seemed to get dinged up on every carry. Agnew remains a liability (though he's pretty good when he can hang on to the ball). Too much Jenkins (and I think York?)…give those touches to Anderson or anyone else.
Kostel looks pretty good. Romaine's FGs were so easy I could make them, so we can't take much away from his performance. He didn't get any touchbacks from what I remember, which is discouraging given the new (terrible) rules.
Intangibles: all decent…team chemistry looks great.
Would like more detail, execution, and better play calling in the redzone.
Overall, a nice win. Clearly this team is better than the past two, but still some things that need cleaning up. I'm thinking all the extra practice time might be benefiting the Beavs…it'll be interesting to see if teams exploit weakness (e.g. safety play has been poor) now that there's game film out there.
I'm thinking the Beavs will be ranked #19 on Monday, leapfrogging Arizona (who will lose tonight), thus making them favorites next week. It'll be interesting to watch how that pans out.
I agree. I think with the last two beaver teams, pessimism has sunk in. I will be more of a believer if/when we beat Arizona. I like the team chemistry but depth is a question mark. Additionally, can we capitalize on our fast start with good recruits or are we status quo? It’s nice to see the team play with some swag though.
as for recruits, the positive TV coverage and many positive comments in the LA Times about the Beav coaches is a public relations/recruiting bonanza of the highest magnitude.

this defense looks like the Beavers of the 2000 decade with stout line and linebacker play but with holes in the defensive backfield that need to be plugged. However, it’s very hard to stop a good throwing qb unless you rush him hard, which at times we didn’t do. I’m optimistic and feelin’ good about them.
oddly, the one aspect of the OSU D that we felt best about (pass rush from the ends) has been the least consequential aspect of the first two games.

I was there too and like many I had to see the shelter of press box shade to survive. The team’s endurance, both physical in the heat and mentally after the two turnovers, was one of the more impressive aspects of that game.
I’m completely buying in. I did predict this team to win their first 4 games(Excluding Nicholls State cause the game was PPD). Not surprised they’re winning, just surprised how they’re winning. Teams just can’t run on the Beavers. Their D-Line dominating up front. We haven’t seen that really in 4 years. Running backs just don’t have holes. They made Franklin look pedestrian. Pass defense will improve.
Just looking at the Beavers’ schedule, next week against the Wildcats is a crucial game. They win that and I can see them winning their next 5 games. WSU is terrible, BYU’s QB situation is a disaster, Utah will have trouble running against the Beavers and that will kill their offense. Huskies don’t have much of a run game that the Beavers need to worry about and the Beavers can pressure Price with their front 4. Washington’s D also is nothing special. ASU is an okay team but nothing great.
Beavers need to stay focused. They’re good but need to keep getting better. Still have some things to clean up, but if they stay focused I think they’ll have a great season.

Also, as you pointed out in the previous thread, the Beavs have trailed for exactly ZERO seconds so far. That and the possibility of being favored next week present another step for this group; they will trail at some point and will be favorites too, they must respond when that occurs. I think they will.
Surprising that the DB’s (while not playing poorly) are not the highlights of the defense. They will improve, as will our own passing offense.
Depth remains a concern, however, the coaching staff on both sides is doing well at involving lots of players. Ariko has got to pour the Gatorade down these guys starting mid-week.
i’m not mad about the defensive backfield, just not thrilled with it. it seems like offenses are afraid to throw at poyer a ton, so hopefully that can make things easier for murphy, reynolds, or whoever else is out there to make big plays themselves.
We know that Riley’s MO is to start slow and gain momentum. So to see a faster start with two good wins has to be encouraging. Next week will be a big game. I’m not sure that OSU would be favored on the road regardless of tonight’s outcome in Eugene. It is another big game, possibly shades of 2010 in Tucson. Was that the last time OSU was ranked?

Just got back from the game. Humid hot there today. Here is my quick take:
Our run defense is off the hook! Our pass rush on the other hand…. they gave UCLA time, only one sack. UCLA burned us with the passing game…. I thought we were supposed to have a good secondary. Defense won this game, over-all they were great!
Our offense looked good, ate up the clock, but left at least 14 points on the field. Mannion threw one bad pick, but looked good with some stellar throws. I think our line wore down there defense as we had a hard time running until the late 3rd into the 4th. Storm was fighting craps all day (in rt calf I believe).
We had some stupid penalties that keep UCLA in the game more then they should have been. Hated Riley not going on the gas before half time.
Score should have been 41 to 20 but impressive win in the heat, good job Beavs!
PS – UCLA fans were great…. way better then USC fans.
This team still hasn’t leaked yet. Still a lot of areas to improve on. But it’s better to have things to improve on after a 2-0 start. I had this team winning 7 and winning a bowl game. I’m going to leave it there until I see them prepare for a team with only one week, but I think the win total will be higher.

I thought Romaine did well on kickoffs. Only one was returned, the rest were out of the end zone
I think the lack of pressure on the QB was due to the line trying to stay disciplined. They didn’t allow Hundley outside at all. Then it looked like they were leaving one LB to spy him up the middle. Our CBs played well, it was the safeties that were getting burned a bit. And I think part of that is they were cheating up against the run.
Great game. I liked the play calling. I do wish they would use the fake fly sweep a bit to keep the defense off balance.
I bet they are saving the fake fly sweep until they need it. Not that teams won’t assume that we won’t run it but nonetheless. Don’t run some plays until you have to, right?
Riley did a great job in adapting to their adaptations. For example, those wide toss outs were working well, but after about the 5th completion the UCLA corners got closer and closer to jumping those route, almost getting a pick. Riley never called another one after that. Then, in the second half, he faked the fly sweep a couple of times and then went to it on the third for big gain. In short, you can definitely see improvement in the play calling

OSU didn’t get to return one kick. They need to change the rules…kickoffs were one of the best plays in the game.
I agree. I was not happy at the game seeing all these kicks go out the back of the end zone. Why even have a kick at all now. Let the team take over on the 25 yard line… that is what is happening now.
I really liked how Riley/Banker went with some QB spy defenses in the second half after Hundley was having some success scrambling in the first half. Personally I also liked the play calling style of lots of short passes and runs followed by a couple bombs to Wheaton or Cooks. Very solid win for the Beavs. Let’s keep it going next week!

This team’s real challenge appears to be be depth. Otherwise, suck our wet rodent balls. I am very surprised.
I also believe the extra practice time is helping. I hope Riley takes advantage of every minute to keep the improvement going. Defense is gaining good experience and doing a great job. Watching the Arizona ucks game and Arizona is making some big mistakes and is having tough time in red zone. They might be fired up and real tough when they play the Beavs at their house next week. uck defense weaknesses are showing tonight.
While its only been two games there is cause for excitement. I also feel like we are a couple of injuries away from mediocrity. They are a young team with, seemingly, a very bright future. BC looks legit, Storm looks slippery. The line gets decent push and is young. Defense is young and FAST. Crighton & Wynn for two more years, could be fun.Kostel performed well and Rileys play calling was solid to good.mannion is maturing, think DA but smart. Could be a fiesta bowl team lite at its best. He played quite a bit. He was part of the sack that that caused Mannion the fumble. I think thr college game exposed his lack of skill, in high school he was able to dominate players because his athleticism and over overall strength. Also he has had to deal with changing of defensive coaches. He has the tools to be a beast though,

At 3:45 to go in 3rd qtr of duck game, zona intercepts it and on the runback he gets blatantly tripped by a duck o-lineman in the open field! No penalty, no replay, no mention by the commentators.
Wouldn’t have effected the game’s outcome but it still pissed me off.
I saw that play too. It’s like everyone was looking at something else when it happened. Not only was it a blatant trip. It was just a plain old kick. He wasn’t lying down or anything. He didn’t even just extend his leg to trip him. The kid actually kicked at the runner’s legs.
What kind of cheap shit is that? I was upset with Enger for his leg whip, but this one takes the cake.
One thing that I you mentioned in your post angry is how much Bray has influenced the defense. Obviously a great pick up and hope we can lock him up as a full time coach. But one area where just an extra defensive coach has helped because banker is now able to consintrate on game planning instead of also having the duty of coaching a position. I know in an article I read I think cliff wrote that last season he wasn’t able to really game plan because of other duties and inexperienced players. This defense is succeeded the expectations that I had for them this early in the season.
another nice effort by the OSU D but i do worry about the middle of the secondary. some very catchable balls dropped by the bruins. running game needs to improve as i don’t think mannion can sling it 45 times/game and be effective. he has a slow release and teams will eventually make him throw downfield taking away the 5 yd catch and runs. dumb penalties need to stop. jury still out but i do like what i see in the first 2 games.

The OSU run defense has been transformed from one of the worst in the country (last year) to one of the best in the country (so far this year). Yet it’s mostly the same players on defense.
So what has changed? The main differences from last year’s Beaver defense to this year’s Beaver defense seem to be: (1) a few new assistant coaches; (2) last year’s players coming back more experienced, more determined, and with improved physical tools after working hard in the off-season.
Relatively small changes can make a big impact.

It seemed as though there were a couple of occasions when the ABC announcers commented on OSU’s good tackling technique. One especially in the 2nd half – by Jordan Poyer, I believe, was cited as being picture perfect. Is this Rod Perry’s doing?

Romaine kicked a touchback on almost very kickoff. Not sure what game you were watching. Piss break after every td or something?
5 kickoffs, he had 3 touchbacks, 1 kick was 5 yards deep in the endzone returned just past the 20, and 1 kick to around the 3 returned to about the 27.
Both field goals was very short but they were executed perfectly with decisive kicks right down the middle, unlike last game’s 2 attempts that were both very weak.
I’m very satisfied with Lettuce this weekend so let’s hope he builds on small successes.

I agree… and it looked to me like when he did kick a returnable ball that was the call. Romaine has two kickoffs this year, the touchback and the high kick that drops on the goal line. If you can get a nice high kick from your kicker you can pin teams back on the 15 and with the new rules that is 10 yards of field position. Of course if t other team has a dynamic returner it might not be worth the 10 yards.
Football thoughts:
Leg whip penalty and personal foul that let UCLA off the goal line kept the game in reach. Had the look of a blowout at that time.
MR went too conservative right before the half. Why not take a shot.

Looking at the link provided by SilverStream, i am impressed by a couple of things:
1) Cooks separation after the catch. It looked like he slowed a bit towards the end, but that was an impressive display of speed. Also, at the end, I liked his non-reaction – as if he just had walked a few yards. (And who hasn’t been clamoring for some slants these past few years?)
2) The defense’s consistent theme that, despite having an irregular start to the season with the postponement of the first game and then the bye, they are motivated not to repeat last year’s results.
Scrap the “Giant Killers” – maybe this D is the “Heisman Haters:”

The beavs have no pass rush whatsoever. That’s the biggest problem I can see.
I’d feel a lot better about the leg-whipping penalty if the refs had caught that blatant face-mask penalty by UCLA which was shown on replay on tv. Seemed generally like there was some home-cooking going on by the refs. Not a lot, but some.
I know the pass rush or lack there-of gave Hundley days to throw, partly why he was so successful through the air today.

Someone noted above that it could have been the D being disciplined not to over shoot the QB because that kid has wheels. I do think that had something to do with it because every time he ran it was scary.
I think that is exactly what they were doing. Containment was the name of that game. I think you will see them pin their ears back and get after the qb when they are no a running threat.
We rushed only 3 most of the game with some stunts and dime mixed. For a three man rush against a mobile Qb where you have to maintain outside contain, I was pretty impressed with the pass rush.

I was a little concerned about our secondary getting beat. It is supposed to be the strength of the team. Granted Shaq Evans is a special player. It seems like the guys are playing for the ball a lot more… don’t get me wrong I like that but when you are a bit out of position sometime face guarding can keep you from getting beat so badly.
Then again a bit of this could be related to the pass rush. Hopefully Matt Scott plays like he did against the Ducks… then none of this will matter.
That might be what I am most pumped for with this team. The fact that each game was far from perfect but the Beavers still won. There is still quite a bit to improve on and this team is young it could see that growth .

Not sure rushing for only 120 yards per game is enough to win the big games. Passing was 75% of the offense which puts too much pressure on Mannion and the receivers, especially as the bad weather approaches.
Everything else is better than expected, especially the D line!

Yeah, with that he rushes for 140+ yards. He also took several plays off for “cramps”. At which point Agnew went in and ran a yard then fell over, and fumbled.
That was a screen, not a running play when Enger had the penalty.

Still I’ll take 150 total yards from running backs any day. I like how Storm runs, he gets north and south really well, rarely is he pushed backwards.
He has something that a Beaver RB hasn’t had in a while, the ability to get a little hole and outrun the defense. He’s fast. Would like to see the Beavers get him the ball more in the passing game. He has good hands and can be explosive.

Saw it live yesterday. Watched it off the DVR this morning. Looked even more impressive on TV. I think at the game I was too pissed off about the stupid penalties and points left on the field. I think offense looked even better this game. Hopefully they will continue to get better. Our D looked good in person and on TV… studs. TV announcers were saying our safeties were playing to far up and that is why we were getting burned once in a while with the pass.

I cannot believe that UO moved up to number 2. They play three cupcakes at home and then beat a team ranked 19 at home and somehow that makes them number 2? They have one hell of a PR machine.
I’m Surprised Florida St. didn’t move up. I know they haven’t played the toughest schedule, but beating the number 10 team, should have moved up over Oregon.
Makes you wonder if the voters even saw the game. Who the hell has six trips to the red zone and comes away with ZERO points! Ducks offense looked very ragged, defense made some plays, but Scott was not ready for prime time.

A couple of post game observations,
1. The running game was much more effective. Woods did a very nice job.
2. O-Line did a good job. Not great but good.
3.. D Line was outstanding, they did not let the UCLA line get any push. Contained Hundley for the most part.
4. With the O able to show they can stretch the field, it can only help the running game.
5. The secondary did not play as well but were making good tackles.
I like that there is still room for improvement everywhere. That should make the team work hard for every game.
Always great to realize you got to get better and are learning but still are undefeated. It’s a change and a great change.
As for whether this team is for real, it’s still a question. This team has not trailed in either game, so it remains to be seen if they can reach down and fight back to win.
The next three games will show if this team is for real. Each presents a unique test and not even WSU should be overlooked. Now that the Beavs got a ranking, the target is on OSU.
AZ has the spread attack which gives OSU fits and is on the road at night. Should be a close game.
WSU is a trap game – While WSU hasn’t shown much, the Beavs needs to make sure there is no letdown and make this a statement game.
BYU is going to be very tough on the road. They’ll be looking for a big win to kick start their season.
The reason the spread by Arizona won’t cause the Beavers as many fits as normal is the defense has so much speed and Matt Scott isn’t gonna make them pay through the air. Hundley is 10 times better. Secondary doesn’t have to be great. The Beavers get to face a string of bad QB’s. Pretty fortunate in that respect

Your overselling the Mike Leach offense here. It’s an offense that takes years to set up. It’s not a plug and play offense whatsoever. Leach is working with personnel who are not built for his system.
I simply said Halliday isn’t good. They have good WR, Wilson might be the conferences’ best. He has wideouts to work with. It’s also an offense that has a lot of high percentage throws. The offense isn’t where Leach would like it but they have some wideouts. Halliday just isn’t good.

I don’t think that the hate is warranted for Leach. It does take time to develop a new system and get the players needed to fit the system. I just never thought that Leach would be the right hire for OSU. To me Mike Leach was the Mike Riley of the Big 12. At times it looked like both teams were on the cusp of taking big steps, but when it came down to crunch time couldn’t get it done. I would put Riley and Leach in the category of good to great coaches, but neither are elite.
What little I watched of the uck game, Scott was missing WRs ALLLL over the place. Of course, he’ll probably have a career game against the Beavs next weekend.
Thank God we didn’t fire Riley as Angry has wanted for the last two years and hire the amazing, high profile, offensive mastermind, coach who would take us to the next level, Mike Leach.

This argument is specious on both ends. If OSU fires Riley then hires Leach, then Leach would likely do well with the Talent Riley has finally assembled. That gives rise to arguments about who’s winning with who’s players rather than the “scheme” argument that underlies angry’s argument.
He wants OSU to take a page from the spread attacks and go that direction. I have numerous comments that say the pace, not the scheme, is the important innovation in football over the last several years. If you paid attention to OSU this weekend, they ran a sugar huddle for most of the game. With a soph QB still getting his sea legs, I’m thinking this is just the next step to moving into a pro-set speed game. And I like it quite a bit. Mannion will be running a no-huddle for his junior and senior years, if not by the end of this year.
So that innovation is important, and it was evaluated and installed by Riley. I think both sides get kudos for seeing that conservative innovation is best. One side gets to say keeping a steady staff is important. The other side gets to say innovation is moveing us forward.
I do think Langsdorf is the odd man out here. It’s pretty obvious Riley is a master play-caller and Langsdorf is not. I don’t think a Langsdorf-directed Mannion sees that Brandin Cooks slant coming out of a break. I was all over that play as they set up, telling my wife, “OOOH! Watch the bottom of the screen! The CB and S are set up wrong!” She was looking at me like I was a crazy football nut.

And I agree that Bray and Perry have been important adds and will be important going forward. If you want to argue that Bray’s presence allows Banker to be his brilliant self as DC, then it’s hard to argue against that. So keeping Bray is important for both sides in order to let Banker be his brilliant self and in order to give the LB’s life. I think both conditions are true for now.
So what we’re looking at going forward is:
1. Innovation on both sides of the ball – check
2. Loyalty to some coaches which has not allowed innovation up until now? – unknown
We’re talking about making bold decisions while retaining stability. This early part of the year has proven that Riley has done both with the options available. Can he recognize the importance of his chess moves thus far in order to make them permanent?
We’ll see is Bray’s position is recognized and rewarded. I love Locey, but not Langs so much. One has recruiting abilities galore and can teach the QB. The other has some evaluation and recruiting abilities, teambuilding skills and doesn’t seem to be raising TE’s to the levels they should be playing.
If we keep succeeding with the status quo, where do we go after the season? I think most of us see the importance of Bray’s and Perry’s presence in order to free Banker up to do his job. I think most of us see that Riley can be his own OC and head the team at the same time. Will Riley’s staunch loyalty become a hindrance once again? Will his moves this year make decisions easy at the end of the year because some of his coaches might be hired away?
We’ll see. I’ll just enjoy their massive improvement for now and worry about those things later.

I thought it was hilarious when the announcer in the UCLA game said their defense was caught off guard because they hadn’t seen a traditional, pro-style offense like the Beavs yet this year. The old has become the new new.
I was never a big fan of the fire Riley and Co. immediately talk but I think the gripes at the time were very legitimate, especially the gripes against Banker. I think Banker has a great defensive scheme when he has good-to-great players executing it. The problem I had with Banker over the past two years was it didn’t seem like he tried to change or tweak his scheme to minimize our weaknesses. If you don’t have great talent for one or two years then it should be the coaches job to make whatever adjustments you can in order to salvage the season. Just my two cents.
Riley has an 11 year history of mediocrity. 2 games does not erase that or make a season. If he gets to a BCS game, then the Riley apologists will have redemption. Until then…
Also, this year’s team is obviously better than last. I simply call it like it is and don’t pretend things are terrible when they’re not. Riley should be replaced if we want to go to big bowl games.

I’ve been a beaver fan and follower since the Giant Killers year, 1967, and that means a fan and follower each and every season since then. Taking the long view, and having experienced all that first hand in real time, let me just say Riley’s 12 years, including the last two seasons, are a breath of fresh air after Fertig, Avezzano, Kragthorpe, and Pettibone. Riley more than anyone else, including Erikson, deserves the most credit for turning the program around.
I must say that after last year, especially the loss to Sac State, I worried that the program was going back into the depths of the tank it was at for 38 years. But these two wins this year and the overall attitude and mentality of this year’s team, both coaches and players alike, makes that seem really unlikely.
Not saying you should endure 38 straight years of really bad football teams, but it does help to keep a little perspective.

I think this partially reflects how poorly Langsdorf performed behind the wheel. Being able to put the team in third and short situations increases your chance for success. That leads to good ball control and gives the defense a rest. But seriously, Riley has full culpability for the complete lack of foresight in O line recruiting that lead to two years of futility. Momentum was lost after so much progress. How can you really not relate to the Riley haters?

Angry is correct in every way. This site and others were not born due to a few lost games or a couple of losing seasons. Anti Riley sentiment has been rising from 12 years of frustration from not seeing our stadium full, not being in BCS bowl contention and for many years settling for a low life toilet bowl. Right now, pressure has been placed on MR for him to fight for his job. And that is what he is doing.
Riley lovers are mediocre fans at best. Most have not experienced the excitement and energy of wining 10 or 11 games in a season and receiving national attention with trip to BCS bowl. This is what true Beaver fans want to see our football program attain. Those fans who will settle for less are usually Riley followers and supporters. I for one, know how great it is to see the Beavers, not only play in, but win a BCS bowl game like the Fiesta Bowl. Mediocrity means inferior and that is not what I want for a Beaver football program.

In 12 years Oregon State has been to one BCS bowl (albeit under Erickson) and Riley had us 1 win away from a Rose Bowl two consecutive years.. By my calculation, we are contending for a BCS bowl about 25% of the time. Unfortunately we have to get by Chip Kelly and the Ducks to get there and Oregon State is hardly the only team in the country that has had trouble with that. I don’t think beating the Ducks is out of the question this year due to their own issues with depth and experienced players.

I am not a Riley ‘lover’, but yeah. You gotta go all the way back to 2006 to a 10 win season. And with the Rose Bowl on the line in 08 and 09, those seasons were actually much more exciting and full of energy then 06.
I was there in 2000, and I would LOVE to see that again. I am also in the opinion that you don’t just go fire a guy in HOPES of finding the guy that will take you to the next level. UA tried that over ten years ago, and they were awful for 10 years.

They played 13 games in ’06 and won 9 during the regular season.
Also, the Pac was terrible in ’08 and ’09. That’s why we saw mass changes with coaches being fired, etc. Even Oregon wasn’t as good those years (didn’t they have Justin Roper and get clobbered by BYU in a Vegas Bowl one of those years??. Too lazy to look it up if I’m wrong, but they weren’t that good).
Those Beav teams were average and looked good (to some) because of the weak competition that put them in RB contention. Keep in mind they would have been one of the weakest teams (record wise) in the RB in forever….again, this shows how down the conference was.

I always say what you bring is who you are. If your offense hurts QB’s because they run, and your QB is missing a game or more because of that, then you’re playing exactly as your coaches planned from the start of the season.
You are who you are every week/year/decade. If you play well, then it matters not if others play poorly.
What hurts is when you have a chance and can’t produce in the big game. That sticks.

My point is that fans are assuming those teams were great. 8-4 is not great. The conference was very very down those years, as evidenced by all the coaching changes. I don’t know what “good” means. What I do know is how the team fares in the conference in which it plays, and how close they come to getting to the BCS bowl that seems to be the ultimate prize whenever we have this debate.

I don’t think anyone thinks those 8-4 teams were “great”! They were good and fun to watch, especially as the seasons went on. They both had some bad early season loses that cost the team the RB or at least a better then a Sun Bowl/Vegas Bowl. In 2008, we beat Stanford to start the season; they go 9-3 and would have made OSU RB bound regardless of the CW outcome. (Which BTW, OSU would have been 9-3 to go to the RB in 08/09, so your 8-4 comment is false and misleading) In 2009 we lost back to back close home games to Cincy and UA in Sept. Win one of those and we are in the Holiday Bowl. I think we can all agree as good as those teams were they could have been much, much better!

Cal was better in 08/09 then they are now or last year. Stanford was improving in 08 and a Bowl team in 09. Obviously they have impoved the last 2-3 years

I don’t recall exactly, but I believe both Arizona schools were bowl bound in 08/09. Hard to say right now, but I’d say both teams are on par with were they were those years.
So, no the conference was not very, very down in those years as you want to make it out to believe to try and help prove your point. Facts show that the conference while maybe not as top heavy as it is now, was very solid 2-8. And the Beavs won more then they lost in conference those years and going back to 06-07 as well. Granted it’s partly due to both UO and ‘Furd going to BCS Bowls, but when a 6-6 UW team and a 7-5 UW team are playing in the conference’s 2nd place bowl game, that is not exactly a sign of a deep conference. Look at 2009, #15 ranked OSU was in the Vegas Bowl! The facts just don’t back up your claim of a weak conference in those years, sorry!
The last two years sucked and I am not 100% convinced that we a headed for 8-4 or better this year. However as frustrated as I was with Riley the last two years I was always leary of firing him because I am not confident who OSU could afford to bring in that would be better. You were always high on Mike Leach and I always maintained that he was Riley’s equal in the Big12. Now, the only difference is, he has to play 9 conference games and will more then likely have to play one touch OOC game a year. Something he didn’t do at Texas Tech. So while I fully get and understand yours and others frustrations with Riley. I don’t believe Mike Leach was ever a good fit for OSU and I think you’ll see him struggle at WSU.

Vegas has OSU opening as 3 points dogs at Zona. That’s absolutely crazy to me, and I’ll take it all day long.
Anything that keeps these guys hungry and playing with a chip on the shoulder is fine with me. Being underdogs, the prospect of another trip to N an Out, heck I even hoped they’ed be unranked for a while longer.
It seems the more disrespected they feel the more focused they are. Attitude has been a big part of these two wins and I hope that doesn’t change.
OT… Is it just me, or does In-n-Out need some salt?
I come at this as the person who cooks in the house. I appreciate when a restaurant minimizes salt when cooking. Those restaurants usually champion fresh ingredients for taste. And I think I-a-O might be doing the same.
But there are two truths to cooking.
1. Proteins need to be salted and rested for at least five minutes before cooking. The chemical changes draw out the proteins and crust the meat in such a way that makes it taste better. I know the French school abhors salt in all instances (including in pasta water). But the taste and chemical reformation involved mandates salt.
2. Along the same lines, their fries suck for two reasons. They cut them on site, but potatoes need to be de-starched. This requires either a blanching, a soaking overnight or a double dip in the fryer. The on-site cut and fry is neat, but they need to double fry that fry. Those things turns into cardboard within 30 seconds, and not salting them doesn’t help draw moisture into every bite.
I like their sauces, but I view I-a-O as a near miss on the burger/fry scene. Mom and Pop rule yet again.
In-n-Out is about the novelty. For how much attention it gets the food is average.
I still hit the original Tommy’s whenever I’m in LA. I tried Fatburger, Five Guys (we have two in Eugene), I-a-O… I even ate Whataburger, Luke’s, Fuddrucker’s and Beck’s Prime in Houston… and Tommy’s franchises in the Bay Area.
The original Tommy’s beats all except for a place in Houston called Bubba’s. Bubba’s is just a trailer on the 57 access road just outside the loop in Houston. But it is well known as the very best burger in Texas. Don’t let the trailer fool you.
Besides that, Tommy’s off the Ventura is just awesome.
I-a-O reminds me of Bob’s when they were a good brand in Corvallis… plus sauce and minus salt.
Having them grill the onions made all the difference for me. Who waits 30 sec to eat those frys anyways.

Its hard to say the Beavs overachieved. The Beavs once again physically dominated but allowed their opponent to stay within reach. 90 yards of penalties and 2 turnovers skewed the result towards UCLA. If anything the Beavs have a lot of room for improvement.

As much as I like Vanderveen… and I kinda do… like him… I think Riley needs to stick with “pocket presence” QB’s with good arms. I like this kid, and I think the lobs to the out routes are correctable. I think he reads the field well.
He looks pretty impressive. UCLA pulling his scholarship offer could end up being a mistake. He looks good. Would be great to see the Beavers get this kid

I think its more likely Az has trouble recovering from their blowout loss rather than they come out playing effective. I like that it’s a night game with cooler temperatures for the Beavs. Wheaton should be looking for a big game in front of the “home” crowd, the running game should continue to improve.

When teams have big games that are hyped and get killed, it really hurts their confidence. You’ll often see these teams lose 3 of their next 4 games. Even close losses in big games take their toll on teams. Texas A&M last season is a perfect example of this. Blew a big lead to Ok State about 5 weeks into the season and was never able to recover. A lot of teams just don’t respond well after losses in games where everyone is telling them how big it is. I expect Arizona to struggle on Saturday and the Beavers to control the game. Not saying that as a Beaver fan, saying that more as just not expecting Zona to respond well. Love OSU’s chances on Saturday.
I think the AZ offense’s confidence will be shaken and they’ll press too much against an OSU defense that AZ will underestimate. If they think OSU is susceptible to the deep pass after watching the UCLA game, they’ll end up paying for it and the QB’s confidence will continue to decline. Also, as a rusher, Scott was underwhelming against Oklahoma St (1.3 ypc) and UO (0 ypc) so I think OSU’s D can contain him.
I agree. AZ’s offense looked terrible all night. UO’s D is pretty good but they were helped out all night by a healthy dose of suck from Matt Scott.
Something to think about is that the AZ defense played better than the final score suggests. Scott giftwrapped 14 points via late game pick sixes,so the defense only allowed 35 points which is pretty respectable vs the zeros.
Whether that means the AZ defense is good,or UO’s offense is not as great as they looked vs ITT Tech in the preseason remains to be seen.
Sounds like the first quarter will really set the tone for this game. A combo of what you two have said and the fact that the Beavs haven’t trailed yet leads me to think that AZ’s only chance is to get up on the scoreboard and to have the Beavs fail to respond.
BTW, if/when the Beavs fall behind I do expect them to respond well.
A friend of mine told me this last week, and I think it applies this week as well. I bought in after the fumble/4-and-out/interception/3-and out/Beavs TD sequence. That was a coming of age sequence right there.

I anticipate AZ starting out fast this game with a few tricks up their sleeve now that there’s film on us. Crowd gets excited and OSU has to play from behind for the first time this season. It’ll be a good test and a win will truly set expectations for the season.

What’s the Tim Brando show? I know the off-camera guy/stat guy on CFB Daily had a Beavs helmet up there last week, even saying, “I have a lot of love for the Beavers,” when asked by the host last week why he chose the helmets he did to put on his table.
The Tim Brando Show is on the CBSSportsNetwork (DISH Channel 158). It is a pretty good show that covers more topics than your average ESPN show is willing to. They are focused on college sports and anyone can call them every weekday at 1-800-777-2907 to talk about anything they want. It is live from 7am-10am and then repeats from 10am-1pm. They have a slight SEC tilt being based in Louisiana, but they really do try to represent alot more than that. I called them the Monday after the Wisconsin win requesting they show the Beaver helmet and finally it looks like they came around to it. They were showing UCLA more than any other Pac-12 team recently until OSU’s second strong win. The OSU helmet was in their most prominent spot today for atleast the last hour, and the show has a loyal national following.

I’ve watched a lot of games on streams of the Pac-12 Network. Quality isn’t great but it’s alright. Gonna have to watch the hoops games online but that’s fine. I watch most of my teams’ games online. Not a big deal.

Arizona does not have a good tailback and OSU will make the cats one dimensional. Beavs will hold them to less than 100 yards rushing. Scott is not a great passer and will throw a minimum of 2 picks. UA lacks a headline receiver like Jaron Criner that they have had in the past. They have no kickoff return game.
This game will be much more one sided than anyone can guess.

The school pays for all travel related expenses, food, lodging and airfare, while the players and staff are on the road.
I realize they get a daily meal allowance. Evidently Mike Riley paid for it – but I would think the school has to reimburse him. It’s not a lot of money to him and I don’t see it as a big deal, but I am just curious how this works from an administrative perspective.
One thing Riley has always performed well at, It’s staying wel within the NCAA box of what is and isn’t allowed.

If it’s allowed to take players to McDonalds or other fast food joints after a game in high school, then it has to be ok to do it at the college level. players had to buy thier own food, but the administration allowed the coaches to take their players there after games if they so chose.
Coaches can buy whatever they want for the team as long as they spend on the team equally, not on an individual basis.

That’s gotta be great for his confidence. He clearly wasn’t confident about that snap that hit him in the face. But so far he’s played in biggest non-conf-home game ever and also in the rose bowl.
Great time to celebrate for Beavers. Bad time to underestimate Arizona. Remember the Duck/Wildcat score at halftime. The final score was mostly Chip being a Prick. Also remember that ever since the days of ancient Greece, days of celebration have been followed by letdowns and relaxation… while the other side is busy building a Trojan Horse. OS still makes too many mistakes. They need to continue to play as underdogs and keep the swagger and hollow bravado to a minimum. Walk softly and carry a big stick.
I agree with you Matt that this and/or the next game can be a trap. But I see a resolve in this team. It will only be their 3rd game, away at that. If this game was a home game I’d actually be a little more worried. Just the fact that these young ones are going into hostile territory I hope will keep them from feeling cocky.

I’m all for calling Chip a dick, but it was only 28-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Arizona has been explosive at times this year. Two of the 3 td’s in the 4th were pick 6’s, and the other was a rushing TD by their backup QB. I wouldn’t necessarily call that running up the score.
Pick sixes are ok. The trickery on the other touchdown was pure in your face because we can. They could have scored easily in the fouth quarter just playng it straight and I would not have a problem with 10 more tds. I knew Aliotti pretty well during college days and I can tell you that he was not taught to stomp on you when you are down….even if the opposition guy Richie Rod would have no qualms about hanging 70 on you. It was the arrogant play selection that was over the top. We nuked Japan twice in WWII (what would they have down if they won?) and then negotiated a settlement. We did not just shrug our shoulders and tell the troops to pour it on some more.
PAC 12: Conference of Jackass Coaches. I can’t stand Rich Rod, Graham, Sark, Kiffin, Mora or Kelly (although I do respect Kelly as being a great coach.) I’m pretty sure I don’t like Leach either. I can’t take him seriously after that video of the F-bomb tirade. Being cursed at and talked to like a child never motivated me.

I’m not sure we could get someone as a coach who would make OSU a powerhouse without thugs. I see the traditional powerhouses don’t recruit, they select. Lane Kiffen is no great coach, but he will be successful because he is selling USC. Now if Kiffen and Riley changed places we would be remembering the good old days of MR. OK State was a consistent door mat until they got a billionaire. UofO was mediocre until they got a billionaire. The 4’s and 5’s are selected by the premium programs. The rest of the teams tries to find quality from what is left. We all know UofO would not be the same without the Nike marketing or millions. The very best QB’s or RB’s or defensive tackles always end up at the premium programs. Most have been premium programs for over 50 years. I don’t see OSU jumping into that premium group without a billionaire. The exception to the rule has been Boise State and they looked horrific their last game. If Riley can stay engaged as he is, I have high hopes for the Beavers.

I use firstrow. It is with great trepidation that I throw out a few hints, because I can almost see the eyerolling from the techies that use the AB site since it’s probably something EVERYODY knows. However – the tabs for different sports are self-evident and you select from the game list. It’s usually not necessary to select a link. After you have x’ed the x site(s) (I can only assume you will) don’t get sucked into the messages that tell you you don’t have the plugins. You will need to close them out and a few more ads b4 it settles down. I use the fullscreen and don’t see any further ads at all.

10 games remaining, and six will be at home (if we play in the PTCG, then I’m pretty sure we would have to be good enough to host that game). Except for Seattle, the road games all have I-N-O on the way back to the airports or near campus. So motivation and thrifty spending can be had for each game.
I had some extra tickets to both the Utah game and the WSU game. The Utah tickets sold fast for a decent price. But after WSU’s performance Saturday I’ve noticed the market was absolutely flooded with tickets for that game, making my tix almost worthless. Now all I can do is pray for rain so people will seek out covered seats.
Where are your seats? I’ve already got tickets, but my dad/bro might be interested in going.

Dunno, there were some insults, some accuracies, and some of the undying LA delusional attitude of “we-are-so-good-no-one-can-relate-to-us.” This attitude continues despite UCLA’s recent history of mediocrity and despite the fact that USC and OSU has become a relatively competitive match up over the last several years and despite the fact that USC STILL does not perform like the USC of the Pete Carroll era.
People like that live in a bubble too long and think its reality. Then again,some of it is supposed to be humorous too.
Such a terrible article and the writer just takes constant shots at the Beavers’ football program and its fans and Riley a little bit. I’m surprised that it was even posted.

One thing I want to say, though, is this — The folks talking about the notion of getting a new head coach as silly talk are full of crap. It just might be that the dissatisfaction voiced was what put some pressure on Riley and got him out of his stupor and back to actually working at coaching football.
IMO the past season was on the coaches. Riley still owes us an apology for that Sac St loss.
That said, they are doing a GREAT job now, and this season is looking good for respectability. We are getting back to where we should be.

Having been to the game and watching the replay here are some thoughts:
Good:
– The team is playing with a lot of confidence and look really prepared.
– Tackling is the biggest improvement I have seen, in the past they have played fast, but overran plays or took themselves out of position or were flat footed and didn’t react fast enough. Now they seem to be playing with speed but are tackling very solidly.
– The different schemes on defense are just amazing not sure who to credit this too, Banker for sure, but is it because Bray is coaching the the LB’s and that allows him more time to scheme or is their input from Perry on ways to attack different offenses.
-Being able to rush the quarterback with three rushers (Ucla) and four (Wisconsin) couple the fact the DB’s coverage has been really good allows us great options to the linebackers to room, cover, or spy/blitz.
– Mannion’s poise and confidence have been able to provide leadership that the team seems to building its character. He has been very accurate.
– Kicking game has not been a problem and can be argued a strength, that has won its portion of the games, from net return, kicking accuracy, return yards (been low, but when given the chance at returns).
– Wideouts have shown the ability to fight off one-on-one coverage, shown good hands and speed.
– Pass protection has been solid.
Bad:
– Need to be better in the red zone, especially running the ball. Mannion showed some poor decisions on the throws, and the receivers need to have a better feel of where the out bounds are.
– The OL has shown the ability to get better as the game wears on, but they have missed several blocks early on in the first half of games, Isaac and Kelly both missed assignments or couldn’t stay on blocks which broke down running plays. Phillip has been average as well, which is a surprise.
– The safeties have been inconsistent. They have tackled well, but I have seen some missed assignments and not getting into the right formations. Some of the corners have looked bad because they looked like they were expecting over the top coverage. Murph and Zim are young at times, but other times they look very capable. Hopefully, they keep growing and improving.
– Finally, penalties, have to be more focused there have been several poor mental lapses from everything to false starts to late hits. Be a little bit more discipline.
2-0 both quality wins and still some things to improve on, great start let’s keep growing and improving.
Anybody know what Gwacham’s situation is? Thought we’d be seeing much more of him.
I think Lindsey made some comment about him needing to learn the routes better. There seems to be a question about his hands, too.
We have not seen too many 3 wide receiver sets, I think some of that is that we have been bringing the TE’s for mass protect and to be able to run the ball. I have to think it might come down to the flexibility in play calling out the 2 TE set. It might have something to do with Obum’s run blocking.
Can we not have Agnew in near the Red Zone offense? His ball security down there is an issue and I just hold my breath when he’s in there. Fumbled again last game at the one, lucky Juice was there to take it away from the defender.
Our schedule going forward with no byes is tough and all, but I’m really excited as I looked ahead to confirm that we don’t face a team coming off a bye week all year.
