My thoughts:
Despite having similar records on the field, Oregon has a better program than Oregon State, this being their second title run in 3 years. Sold out Autzen for 10 straight years, Beavers haven’t sold out a game this season.
Gameday=more great pub for the Ducks, Phil Knight, Nike. Rich get richer. Etc.
Oregon is going to win this game, and possibly big, and get in the national title picture, so we’ll have to deal with Duck-gushing the next five weeks. I predict the Ducks steal USC’s slot and are ranked #5 on Monday, possibly even leap-frogging Iowa and being as high as #4.
Beavs need to run the table and get the Holiday Bowl to salvage this season and get some national momentum to head into their recruiting season.
or
Since the Beavs are not going to run the table and reach the Holiday Bowl, they need to win the Civil War and destroy the Ducks season (don’t see this happening, but perhaps the defense will be a different/better unit in 5 weeks or the Ducks will be on their 9th QB by that point).
Finally, my gut tells me Lee Corso will don the Duck headgear, mayhem will ensue, and Angry will lose his breakfast.
Ugh.
Come on Angry, it was pretty awesome when Chip Kelly wore the Duck hat…
Love the site, btw. Keep up the good work.
The Ducks have about a six-year or so head start, going back to the 1994 season and their Rose Bowl appearance after that season. They’ve really been pretty much up for the most part ever since then. The Beavs have been fairly well up since the 2000 season and the Fiesta Bowl. Riley needs to make some strides in recruiting if the gap is going to be closed.
AB I hope you’re wrong on this. I guess I’m not that convinced the Ducks are as good a team as their record would indicate. I’ve watched them a couple of times this year, their strength is their misdirection spread O. It seems to give defenses fits, and Masoli runs it pretty well. If he goes down, so does the team. I hope SC wins this one to be honest, but I’m not convinced they will. But there’s no doubt UO have significant program visibility and strength advantage over O State in all kinds of ways, including recruiting. The biggest advantage are the O and D lines at this point, not necessarily the skill positions. Canfield has the chance to play on Sundays, I don’t think Masoli has any chance at all. But we all know that doesn’t matter in college (hell, Tebow will be lucky to get drafted also, but he wins games as a college QB, surrounded with 5-star talent however).
As far as running the tables, let’s just hope the Beavs beat UCLA today. One step at a time.
Canfield will be drafted…he’s having a great senior season. If he keeps playing at this level he’ll be drafted pretty high.
As far as the Oregon/USC game…pretty much going as I figured. USC looks overmatched via scheme, but they’re hanging around, so it could be a good ending.
One interesting stat is that Allen Bradford has 5 carries for 14 yards in the 3rd quarter–the same Allen Bradford who had 15 for 147 last week.
Mays with another high/late hit, this time on Masoli. If I’m a GM I’m not even considering the guy.
40-20, Ducks. Knew this was going to happen. No idea how the Ducks were a home dog in this game.
Get ready for 5 weeks of Duck-gushing hell, boys. Load up on the gin.
Let’s face it, the ducks are scary good. They deserve the attention they’re gonna get. Multiple threats. No one key guy. Masoli is the main guy on offense but even if he went down with injury Costa has shown he can step in and run it. The defense meanwhile is just getting better and better.
I have to say I am surprised. After Boise State and Purdue I thought this team would collapse, but they’ve done just the opposite.
Oh I know they’re good. I think Florida and Oregon would make the best title game right now. 5 weeks from now, who knows. That’s the nature of college football in 2009, mainly due to increased scholarship limits, but also other minor factors. There’s a lot of parody and things change from week to week–it’s why I never do power rankings and only grade weekly performance. You look like a fool trying to crown a king on a weekly basis.
As far as the Ducks, I gave them the lowest rating in week 1, but by my midseason report a few weeks ago I had them #1. USC has shown warts all year, and after what the Beavers did to them with their pro-style offense I knew last night’s game would be a blow out. None of this is surprising, but it’s hard to swallow. I’m just going to have to tip my hat, bow before the Ducks, and pray it ends soon. Right now, as a Beaver fan, we have absolutely no ammo. December 3rd will be here before you know it, and I have a feeling this years beatdown will be a 40-50 point margin. I know Halloween was last night, but December 3rd is going to be our fright night. Buckle up.
By the way, the word you’re looking for is “parity” Parity is defined as equality, while “parody” is defined as an imitation of another’s work, often as a satire.
This is correct.
Definitely no 40 or 50 point margin! After getting shellacked in last
years’ civil war they will play the Ducks much better, it will be a closer game than last year, providing the Rodgers Bros stay healthy! These 2 fellas seem to make about 85% of the Beaver offense.
The Beavers play about the same level or slightly below the level
of their competition, I was really dissappointed in the Beavers’ game against UCLA, from the outset they really looked crappy and generally
continued to look poor throughout the game, after a good showing against
USC, it was a real letdown! OSU is a much worse team than their record
as they should have losses to UNLV and UCLA. Win against UNLV was
compliments of the refs and the win against UCLA was compliments of a dropped pass by defensive back Verner. The defense seemed to play a little better at times yesterday but it must be noted UCLA has a very
poor offensive line.
The Beavs do have a chance to win at Berkley net week-end as Cal is playing at about the same crappy level of the Beavs. It will be a matter of
which team gets the breaks, most of the time it is the home team, but we shall see? I was at Reeser yesterday and saw the game and about the
only thing that impressed me was those brothers from Richmond, TX
other than that ho hum! The beavs were really lackluster and almost pitiful in organization and discipline, these weaknesses should not be
evident at this stage of the season! Toss up at Cal, a couple of also-rans
fight it out for a little positive press.
Marc,
The Ducks just beat USC by 27…could have been 30+ if they didn’t let up. They also beat Cal by 39, and Cal will most likely beat us this weekend. Both those teams have better defenses than OSU. So…why won’t they beat the Beavers by 40-50? Give me some good reasons.
The beavs have been in every game. They weren’t blown out by now 8-0 and 7th ranked Cinncinati, and not by USC at USC (when the ducks beat USC by 27 in the LA Coliseum instead of at Autzen let me know). Yes, the beavs easily could have lost –maybe should have lost– at UNLV, but at the same time they conceivably could’ve won all 3 of the games they lost. Plus they actually seem to do a little better on the road. So there are some reasons to be optimistic about the CW. Plus the ducks are now in approximately the same position the beavs were in last year. Wouldn’t seem to take much to get them motivated.
The Cal game will be interesting. I’d like to say it will tell us a lot, but on second thought I’m not so sure about that, given the nature of the CW, playing for pride, and all that. But if the beavs have any interest at all in avoiding having this season go totally into the crapper, then they can only afford one more loss at the most, or preferably win out. So the Cal game is important that way.
The Beavs have been pretty lucky to this point, it not inconceivable that we only win six games this year and miss a bowl game. It is definitely plausible that seven teams in the pac 10 will be bowl eligible and only six teams can go to a bowl game.
This Beaver team lacks heart and talent. If the Rodgers brothers start on defense too then we might be able to win. Those two are the heart and soul of this team. A good example of lack of heart is Kristick, he was jogging to his zone on the final play of the game, that is very disappointing. I am generally concerned about this team and our ability to win. Further, I am concerned about another streak after the Rodgers brothers leave, this team lacks heart and discipline.
The margin of loss to the ducks in the civil war this year will probably be as large as the ducks want it to be. That team looked top 5 yesterday and we looked terrible. I am not a duck fan, I root against them every game they play but I have to give credit where it is due. I hope that the Beavs show something this weekend, I may become a Beaver Believer again this weekend. That said, our D line will not come back into my good graces and they will be the reason we lose to the ducks this year.
I am making a note of your 40-50 point blow-out win of Oregon over OSU, Angrybeaver, you will eat crow, it ain’t going to happen!
Don’t come back to me and say if so and so had not got injured my
prediction would have been right-that be would what a Oregon fan would say.
This OSU team always plays close to the competition or slightly below.
Joubert has pointed out enough to say it will not be a blow-out, I am not predicting a Beaver win but I know it will not be a 40-50 point victory margin. The outcome of a future game between two teams simply cannot be predicted on the basis of whether they won or lost to a common opponent in a previous separate meeting by those two teams. Time
changes circumstances and there is yet considerable time before OSU plays Oregon. Those circumstances created by that time may play into the favor of either team, so that is the fallacy of making a blatant unyeilding prediction such as yours. I will not give Cal the benefit of the doubt and say they will likely beat us, I will say it is a toss-up but
Cal does not have the two brothers from Richmond, Texas!! If I were
to pick a winner I would say it will be a extremely close game and I
would not be the least bit surprised to see the Beavs leaving the bay area
as winners! (As you know those Rodgers Bros are winners)!
Marc, a lot can happen (e.g. Masoli goes down) that would change my mind about the 40-50 point remark, but feel free to note it. The comment is based on what I saw yesterday, and I said in the first post that a lot can happen in 5 weeks. But if nothing changes, yes, we’re losing the game by 40 minimum. We lost by 30 something last year and we were (a) @home and (b) had a bunch of NFL players on defense. So, I’m not simply basing my statement on Oregon beating up on USC and Cal. It’s many things. Open your eyes man, who on our defense can stop the Ducks? How do we force a single punt if the game were played tomorrow?
No joke about forcing punts, I think Oregon only punted once yesterday.
I was shocked to see Oregon has punted 40 times this year. The Beavers have punted only 34 times. Odd.
As a fan I hate the Ducks with every fiber of my being. This season is so annoying because they looked so bad against Boise and really not very good against Purdue and Utah. A couple of stopped special team plays and the Ducks could have started 0-3 and it would have been end of story. Thank god Boise St. will keep them out of the BCS! Why can’t teams stop their spread?
Who knows, Arizona has been a trap for them recently, but unlike in past years their defense is playing so well. I don’t see it happening. Where the hell did that defense come from??? I don’t now if I can handle next year. I think damn near most of their starters are back.
I tend to side with Angry that the Beavers will not be competitive with them this year and probably next, but I’d love to be proved wrong.
You say “a couple special teams plays” as if ST aren’t 1/3 of the game and a skill in itself. That kick returner they have (Barner?) is great. It’s not coincidence or luck that the ST won them a few games when the other two facets weren’t clicking.
All I’m saying is Utah and Purdue definitely had big chances to beat the Ducks, but my god how they have improved so far this year.
Angry, we shall see, the Beavs were worn out going down the stretch
last year and were without Quizz entirely, and beleive you me this guy is a game changer he can completely change the focus of any defence and
without James for a entire half. We had LM as our Q-back in that game,
he should not have been in that game whatsoever!! He did not come clean with Coach Riley as to the extent of his injury (He should not have
played in the bowl game either) he threw a couple of picks against O and
his arm was like a scatter gun (was equally ineffective against Pitt) so I
do not think any comparison is appropriate from year to year.
I fully acknowledge the Ducks looked awesome but as a 30 some odd year fan of college football I have yet to see the emotional level remain the same from game to game, I beleive the ducks will fully have the
plate full against Arizona and expect Stanford to give them a good game.
When the market reaches giddy heights that is when it generally falls the
hardest!!! But what you saw last night is not necessarily what you will see each and every remaining game. Back to the Beavs, I see a lot of empty
egos on that team, players strutting who do not deserve to strut!! I completely exempt the R Bros from this accusation as they just come to
play football! I know just as sure as the day dawned yesterday morning
there was big heads out there on the OSU team that were entirely out
of place and these individuals were some of the games poorest performers! Perhaps it was because the team played USC closer than
was predicted. The blocking is always suspect where the Oregon players are engaged in every offensive play and looking for somebody to block
many of the OSU players at that time have a finger inserted in their
anal opening. If this team could wake up and gel and the coach would
see to it there is more to a offensive attack than running Quizz into
a concrete wall and get multiple talented players (Wheaton and others
(there is talent on this team)out there with the R Bros and Banker would wake up his slugs, we could do well down the stretch, but what I observed yesterday was a back slide. They really stank the place up!! They take to much time getting set for the next play and there always seems to be
indecision. Only one series this season have they looked like a quality
offensive football team and that was the 1st series after half in the Cincy game, that should be the MO. What the hell do they do in practice?
Watch cartoons and have a good time, would be my guess. The defense
maybe hopeless for sure they are hapless most of the time!!!! So it
is entirely up to the offence to play ball control and to keep the opposition on its heels and away from the ball!!!
angry, did you see during the bruins game that somebody in the stands held up a sign that read, “the bruins got jaquizzed on” ? it was pretty great, haha.
-beavgirl
I did see that, lol. Hilarious.
Ok, so here is a very odd thought on the Civil War. Does the Beavers lack of pass rush actually help them in that game. Our d-line will not push too far up field to over pursue, we will not force Masoli out of the pocket where he can be dangerous in a “what is he gonna do now?, and if the line does the stay put routine it has been in most of the year, then the pursuit angles may actually be in place to prevent huge gains. I know it sounds like anti-logic, but maybe this weakness becomes a strength. As for getting people more involved in the offense, I think Canfield is hitting 8 receivers or so a game, so he is not focused “only” on the Rogers’ boys, it is just they are so good once they have the ball in hand that they gain so much more yardage than the other offensive players once they have the ball. You are right though, the next 5 weeks are going to be awful as Duck fans believe they are already in the NC game.
Paul, that is hilarious. Great outside-the-box thought. You could be on to something. Never thought of that. Watch we develop a pass rush the week before, though, and decide to use it. Wouldn’t that be ironic…
Paul does have a good thought, that is what it takes the stop the spread it seems, a solid d line that doesn’t over pursue. I can only hope that we find a way to win this game. A perfect storm could happen that lets us win that game and find a way in the Holiday Bowl but more than likely we play in Las Vegas.
I’d play a 4-4 defense (though, honestly, do we have 4 good LBS?), get Hardin in at CB to support the run, and play the safties in the box. I think if you challenge Oregon to throw you likely stay close. Their deep threat is their weakness. Their running attack is so strong that it’s worth selling out to stop it and just accepting defeat if they pass on you to win. Chances OSU actually changes their scheme for the opponent is minimal, though. Expect a base 4-3, Tim Clark, and a lot of points.
I think that a 4-3 may be better to stop the spread but I agree that Hardin should play. I laid out a simple idea of how I would stop the spread on your other post that is about spreads. I agree, sell out to stop the run, force them to pass. Ultimately if we tackle well and hard we can keep it close or win. A couple of solid hits against their players can add up, I think that is one of the most overlooked parts of defense, just hitting hard.
Angry,
Oregon State has played against UNLV(Spread offense), Cincy(Spread like offense with no huddle offense), Arizona(a form of wide receiver spread offense), and soon the ducks in a spread offense. Banker will look at game film of last year(if he hasn’t already) and look at game film of this year ESPECIALLY the Stanford vs. U of O to see what Stanford’s defense did to stop the ducks! That is the film Banker and Riley need to look at. Also, Tim Clark wears contacts and is close to being legally blind. Could that account for his playing ability? I think that fact amazes me in how he can make plays at times, but at other times, he gets burned like toast being left in the toaster far too long.
On another note:
Write a current blog about the CAL game…I mean Canfield looked like an NFL QB that was firing on all cylinders even when Jahvid Best got injured.
I know you’ll say Jahvid going our of the game will say that changed the momentum and changed the dynamics of the game, but injuries are in the game of Football and they do happen.
The thing is I didn’t see the Cal game (i’m on the road/vacation).
Canfield has always looked like a pro, but now he’s playing like one. His only flaw is slow reads, but that is improving. Wouldn’t you say he’d be a 3rd rounder at this point? I think so. And that will only rise if he has a big Civil War.
Best leaving the game did impact it, but their backup is pretty darn good so the Beavs must have flat out played well. How did Hardin play? Did he help in the run game? I feel out of the loop after missing just one game.
It is a simple as taking a page out BSU’s game plan ! They worked on beating the ducks all summer and it worked! It is essential to have
containment and old fashioned tackling yes tackling not hitting!! I don’t
know how many times I have saw Masoli hit and simply waltz away from the hit, wrap the guy up below the waist on a now neglected tackle and
he will be a lot less likey to rack up the yards! A pass rush is necessary against this guy but reinforcement or delayed blitz is also essential with
good old fashioned wrap-up tackling, it almost seems our players are afraid to tackle a push or hit is not going to have much effect on Masoli as he is to sturdy!! Great fundementals and common sense will go along way
in creating a level playing field between O and OSU but execution will be
a must! The Beavs have been sporadic in that area. The beavs can beat
Cal, absolutely no doubt about that but it will require a better effort by the
D than we saw last Saturday against UCLA. In each and every game we
get burned by the long bomb! That must be stopped! Go Beavs!
