Can someone please explain this letter written by Ed Ray? I don't get it. He wants fans to wear black to show they aren't racists? Read this letter twice and still don't understand what is going on. Anyone?
To the OSU Community:
I write today to challenge all of us to demonstrate the great progress we have made at Oregon State University in the last five years to create a more inclusive community one that celebrates our differences and shows that together we are attaining excellence through diversity.
This fall, we can do that in a very simply way: wear black attire to the Oregon State – Utah football game on Oct. 20 and to the Cal game on Nov. 17 to express support and affection for the remarkable football Beavers. This simple act sends a profound message: that we are united as a community and that those who engage in behavior that is hurtful to others will not deter us from taking this next step in appropriately living our values.
In recent weeks, discussion about going forward with wearing black attire to two OSU football games this year has called attention to an incident in 2007 that was very hurtful to many in our community. At that Blackout Reser event, some students seeking attention wore black facepaint and afro hair wigs to the game. A picture of one of those individuals was published in the Daily Barometer. A very brave woman of color asked the Barometer to publish a guest editorial about how hurtful it was to see the paper portray such negative stereotypes. The Barometer declined to publish her editorial, which led to deeper, powerful discussions of insensitivity and ignorance on this campus. Sadly, some did not know that white students wearing black face and afros represented a throwback to hateful times in this country when white minstrels "played" black entertainers, and that such behavior was and is hurtful and frightening to many among us. In time, the editor of the Barometer understood the need for swift and strong condemnation of such behavior.
At the next MLK Jr. Breakfast on campus, I noted that there will always be knuckleheads among us and that we will know that we have made real progress toward an inclusive community when we can call out foolish behavior, secure in the knowledge that we have each other's back. I believe in each of you and the basic goodness of this wonderful community and University, and I believe we can show support for our football team and for each other in this simple way: appropriately support your school's athletes by wearing black attire to the Oct. 20 and Nov. 17 Beaver football games.
We cannot always choose the time and place and circumstances to demonstrate the power of our convictions. Yet, we can make a powerful statement about who we are and what we stand for with this simple act.
Others have been involved in discussions about promoting this activity and it was announced that we would not promote a campaign for fans to wear black attire to these football games. I take full responsibility and apologize for not engaging in that discussion sooner. I hold myself and all of us accountable for understanding the harmful effects of racial stereotypes and avoiding behavior that perpetuates those stereotypes. I would hope the Barometer would also avoid perpetuating stereotypes and will condemn the behavior if it occurs.

the way I see it is that he is re-instating the black-out games and that he isn’t going to let a few “knuckleheads” ruin what is suppose to a fun, supportive event for the team. So the black-out is back on and being promoted.

Also why does the clothing color have to be black? they might as well just go paint their faces black too lool. If this turns out to be a real thing it seems like just a panicky knee-jerk reaction by the administration.

I remember the 2007 blackout incident. A few stupid idiots ruined it for everyone and the event was not organized very well either. The whole thing was just pathetic.
The U of O, the most liberal college in the world had no problems with their blackouts. The fans just dressed in black t shirts or sweat shirts and that was that. There were blackened faces but no one screamed “racist” when they did it. The whole motivation behind it was just to support their team.

The whole thing is just stupid. If I remember correctly, back in the Erickson era, most fans dressed in mostly black anyway because of the “men in black” pre-game video and players most times were in black uniforms. We did it without even knowing it.

This is so fucking stupid it makes me embarrased to be an alum. Black is our school color for christs sake. You go to any stadium and they will have goofy afro style wigs in their school color and face painted in their school color. Its not racist.
Angry, I was a student during the 2007 event so let me frame the situation. Basically, our athletic department is so slow, the students organized a grass roots campaign to have a “black out”. The students by and large showed up in black. Unfortunately, two guys (probably frat) made a foolish and decision. It didn’t appear that they had maliciously dressed in black and had worn Afro wigs. Instead, they believed that painting their face and putting a wig on would make them look more like fans. The unfortunate part occurred when they didn’t paint the black face paint close enough to their eyes (if you have ever tried to paint your face, you will realize that it is harder than it looks). It looked quite a bit like black face, they were just too ignorant to know about black face.
Midweek following the game, a certain editorialist at OSU caught wind and wrote about the event. Unfortunately, she didn’t use it as a time to educate. She instead became very indignant and criticized the entire student body for promoting a racist act. She was almost completely unaware of football culture and how their ignorance could have led to this event. This only further exploded when the Eugene (and possible Portlandb news found out about the editorial and blew the thing up. Typically people ignored this editorialist’s remarks but for whatever reason this caught on. Essentially, something was made out of nothing and education didn’t take place, the school administration just stood in fear. Thus, organized blackouts haven’t occurred. Ray dropped the ball five years ago, I think he now is trying to at least do something. Sort of feels like rubbing salt in an old wound though.

Painting your face black is stupid. I didn’t know people still wanted to do that after they learned how offensive it was. As is wearing a wig. The blackout in my mind simply meant that you’re supposed to wear your black Oregon State shirt instead of your Orange one.

I think Ed Ray’s letter is in response to the Oregonian’s John Canzano column 2 days ago, where he said the cancellation of the black out is a “Cop Out”, and that Oregon State should have used this as a teachable moment.

And going back to the reason why it was banned in the first place, just read the 2007 Daily Barometer article. They talk about dipshit white boys wearing their wigs and facepaint to the game and talking to each other like they’re gangsta, throwing the word “nigga” around casually to each other like the black out made that ok to do. Sure, the word doesn’t have the same meaning these days, but people do still find it offensive, especially when they don’t think it should be used in a joking context like the dipshits thought they were doing.
The article has quotes from Quizz and Dockery explaining that they’re ok with the fans dressing up to support their team, but when it turns towards displaying offensive behavior towards their culture, understandably, they’re not ok with it.
It’s one of those stories that will only go away if we stop taking about it, but at the same time it obviously needs to be talked about, considering it’s the #1 topic surrounding the school right now when a #14 ranking and #Beaverjuice should really be what’s on everybody’s mind.
I blame the Daily Barometer for bringing it up again this year, causing the school’s knee jerk reaction to cancel the blackout. It’s busch league journalism to report on something that isn’t even news, in order to create news. Dipshits……
Yeah, that’s my understanding of the situation. Went bad in 2007, big black eye for the school, never did it again. When it was reorganized this year, an organization (not sure if a student group or who it was) asked the school to cancel the blackout because of the shit storm five years ago and not wanting to create another opportunity for people to act a fool. School caved and cancelled it, followed by some negative press (i.e. Canzano), followed by Ray jumping into the frey and re-authorizing it. I take Ray’s letter as basically saying, we’re not racist, we can do black out in the appropriate way and I trust the non-racist student body at OSU to do this appropriately. So, let’s show the world we can do this without incident. Probably should have been Ray’s immediate response to the request not to have it, but it got bungled.

Maybe OSU is so thin skinned, and politically correct. Angry has it right, if someone is doing something or wearing something inappropriate then bounce them out. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. We have created a society that has replaced true bigotry with a new blight of hyper-sensitive political correctness. Don’t get me wrong, I know that there is still bigotry in this world. But, a couple of students that paint their faces black is not racist. But, now what happens is a few white kids take offense to prove they aren’t racist. They project how they think that their fellow black students might perceive this to be a racist act. And they lash out at it. Not reallizing that by bringing attention to it they are actually not allowing our country to get past racism. The only way to get past racism as a country is to treat each person based on their merits. If you continue to bucketize people by the color of their skin, then we will continue to see people by the color of their skin.
Interestly, I think that this happens more by people that have “white guilt” rather than people in the black community. But, either way it continues to harm this country.
I find it interesting that the original occurence happened in 2007 and the current student government had a problem with it, even though I doubt any of them were even at OS when it happened. People need to insert common sense when it comes to all of this stuff, intent does matter.

Angry, I disagree with the Andros image concern. The current crop of prospective students and athletes don’t have any idea who Andros is and what his race views may or may not have been. I think you are giving way to much credit for people even being informed to the history. I think the bigger issue is the lack of diversity at the school which makes some people feel the need to work even harder to prove they aren’t racists.
The whole Andros thing wasn’t racism, but it looked that way because of the participants.
Andros was just a hard-nosed military type who wanted his teams clean cut and shaven. Some blacks do have skin problems with shaving, but at that time (and in Andros’ time of service) they were made to shave regardless. Andros simply enforced the same policies on his football teams, and a couple players who had issues found solidarity from others who understood. They happened to be all of one color, and observers found this to be an issue of racial insensitivity.
It probably was that kind of issue given that the military now allows people with skin conditions averse to shaving to not shave (they still need to keep it trim). It was just misunderstood on a personal, hygenic, disciplinary and physiological level, not a systemic racial or cultural one.

speaking of, I talked to the Beaver ticket office earlier in the week to see if I missed out on the Nicholls State ticket exchange while out of the country. I did, but they said if the rescheduled game gets cancelled because of the Pac-12 championship game, they will issue refunds for your Nicholl’s State tickets. Holding those tickets DOES NOT mean you have any priority when purchasing games for the Pac 12 championship game however, since that is considered the post season. Just sayin’…….

I think you can let sleeping dogs lie for the most part and I can understand that decades ago there may have been a perception by some that OSU was not at its best in diversity issues. I just think that what may have lingered from that over the past 15-20 years is limited and that OSU hasn’t had an understood racism issue over all that time. Race wasn’t an issue when I attended all the way from 1994 to 2001 short of one incident where someone peed off the 5th floor of a quad dorm building. That was simply a drunk “knucklehead” as Ray would say and that was during my first year in 1994. I don’t see Ray as saying or thinking we have a diversity issue. He is saying OSU is strongest through its diversity.

Just returned from sports gear store at Gateway Mall in Eugene. Loaded with duck fans and all they were purchasing were “black” and yellow jerseys, shirts, hats and alike. I guess puke green is not an in thing now. Beaver color is much better.

On today’s campus I believe there is more reverse racism occurring. Affirmative action is one racist policy. However, if you have attended social events on and around campus you would notice that most black kids are considered the cool kids by virtue of merely being black. Additionally, I have heard many young female coeds state that they would like the opportunity to be with a “black guy”, never heard that go in reverse. Being a white guy I’m sure that I haven’t experienced the full gambit of racial situations but my wife is hipanic so I am closer to the issue than many other white guys. It is ridiculous that people can no longer just laugh at the idiots, instead we take them seriously and this is where it leads us. Just think, if white people had their own channel (like BET, but it would be called WET) it would be considered a porn channel. I’m sure that Jesse James would retort and say that we have ABC, NBC, etc… Either way, I’m just fucking sick of the racial issues being brought continuously, especially in situations where it is clear there is no overt racial hatred or prejudice.

I’m a heathen bastard raised in a home with no religion. Therefore, I haven’t done my due diligence with regard to the contents/teachings of the Bible, Karan, Torah, etc. I haven’t seen text that says if you can’t get them to join, then lop off their heads.
