Home Football Sean Mannion Out

Sean Mannion Out

198

I'm sure you all heard by now, but Mannion is out indefinitely (4 weeks seems the minimum).

Thoughts on bad Beaver luck and Vaz?

I've always liked Vaz…what I dislike is that he's taking over when we're 4-0 and #10 in the country. If this were last year, I'd just accept this for what it is and move on (heck I'd even be curious to see what Vaz could do), but this year it royally sucks. Anyway, I think CV has a little J. Smith in him…gritty, savvy, etc. But when we saw him in game action he looked like the proverbial deer in a headlight. So I have no idea what to expect. If he's nervous and overwhelmed, the Beavs will get blown out. If he's matured and gained confidence over the past few years, they should be okay. Let's hope he knows the playbook and they don't have to dumb down the game plan. Height/batted passes could be an issue…I'd like to see roll outs, etc.

Also, I believe Mannion's injury happened on the blown hand off.

For all those chanting "Riley is God" and wanting to fan him whilst feeding him grapes, yeah…it's a long season, and like I said, they haven't done anything yet. Do I think Vaz can step in and do a good job? Yes. But execution, effect, procedure, etc will all have to step up and be precise (precision is not a hallmark of Riley). Room for error just decreased dramatically, and the Beavs were only winning games by one score. Does the team believe in Vaz? Do they come out deflated?

Vaz is a good backup to have, but this is a major kick in the sack, let's not fool ourselves.

  1. I think the playbook stays open. Vaz has been in the system longer then any of the other QB’s. Its just a question of how his non-game experience will translate. We won’t know till Saturday, and maybe not till after the Utah game. BYU has one hell of a defense, so who knows. Defense will likely have to win us that game in any case… Or maybe this will happen… just substitute #1 for #7 or #2.

  2. The team will definitely miss Mannion’s high completion rate. Yeah, he had an off game last week, but last year and this combined were pretty damn good for a young QB in a pro set.

I worry about Vaz’s height too, but it doesn’t have to be a problem. I worry about him being cool and going through his progressions against a BYU D that will be out to confuse him.

  3. Rest of the team will rally, I think. if Vaz is competent I still think we have a good shot at the next two games. This is when that early bye hurts us. After that, it will all depend on the team and Vaz’s progression. There are several other QB choices as well, but Vaz give us more of the playbook.

        • Vanderveen isn’t near ready yet. Though it might be nice to use him like the 49ers use Kaepernick…he can run, just can’t pass effectively yet.

          • I fully disagree about avoiding using Vanderveen this year. He can always redshirt next year or the next year. Seriously think he will leap frog Mannion? If not, he would lose eligibility next year while missing an opportunity to play this year. I say keep him ready at all times and don’t hesitate to remove redshirt if he has a chance to be on the field. Even if only mop up duty.

          • Watching his HS film, he may be a more athletic QB than we’re used to, but he’s no Braxton Miller.

He looks more like a capable scrambler than a running threat.

      • I also forgot we lost Jack Lomax… alas… It would be tough to backup when you never see the field. I wonder if this might spur Riley in to trying to get more pt for the backup QB’s in the future. Its tough when you play all world schedules like the Beavs.. Man if we were in SEC country we would have a backup with serious I-AA experience ;)

  4. If Vaz comes in fired up and wanting to lead (e.g. something like Movaeo), I think OSU can win and recover. If he comes in expecting to be carried by his team, and Riley is playing not to lose, then it could get very predictable, ugly, and boring.

  5. I kind if expect the game plan to be similar to Wisconsin. Lot of short passes to our play makers and let them pick up yards that way. If he can manage the game and our defense plays like they have. I still like us for this week. Byu should not put alot of points on us.

  6. I can’t recall exactly, but did Vaz see some snaps in 2010 or start any games?

I like the reference to J. Smith, hopefully that’s what we have here in the making.

    • He played in 2 games in 2010. A few snaps in a blowout win vs Cal and played 2 snaps against Oregon in the Civil War. He’s never started a game at OSU

        • My memory was that practice reports on Vaz were always positive, in here, in the press, and from the coaches in the last year. There might have been a few sentences in here about another QB flip-flop after Spring ball.

          P.S. I hate knees.

          • Oh sorry, to be more specific – I meant today (10.8.2012). My buddy said he had a good practice today.

I was just curious if anyone was there to see if in person.

But if memory serves correctly, Vaz generally had positives mentioned about him in practices from the past.

          • Mike Parker said Vaz had a great practice today. He said he consistently hit deep balls on the money. He said he threw real hard and he could hear the sizzle coming off a ball thrown down the seam.

          • I think Angry is right, a good back up to have, and everyone has always said good things about him. The issue is virtually zero play time, and how the hell you react to being thrown into the fire like this. He may know the playbook cold, have the talent, etc., but who knows how the hell this guy is going to react, especially against a fired up BYU defense that I assume is going to be absolutely relentless coming after him (and all the other’s defenses, for that matter, unless he can prove he’ll burn them). My real worry is the 30 year olds injure him and we’re then talking about Harrington or burning Vanderveen’s redshirt.

          • I went salmon fishing in the Yaquina today, (which was lousy) so I missed practice today. I plan on going and seening Vaz for myself tomorrow.

  7. I really hope Riley doesn’t change anything with the play calling. There’s really no reason to for this game. The goal is still the Rose Bowl so this game means nothing. I say give Vaz a shot to be the man and if adjustments need to be made when we play Utah back in conference play then make them next week.

  8. Is nobody going to mention the coaching match-up in this game? Riley vs. Mendenhall. Early vegas line on that contest is Mike Riley +7.

  9. The good news is the next 3 games aren’t vs any offensive juggernauts. Last week, 7 pts would have been enough to beat BYU. Utah hasn’t been lighting anybody up and their highest point output was last week when their defense helped score. And Washington is averaging 12 1/2 pts vs BCS competition. If our defense can keep playing well, Vaz won’t need to score a ton of points to win those games. The thing I worry about is time of possession. If the Vaz led Beavs can’t sustain lengthy drives, I worry the defense will spend too much time on the field and wear down as the games go on. We also can’t afford to turn the ball over vs those teams. Ball security and minimized INT’s will keep us in the game.

  10. Mannion’s injury happened on the play that snapped at the 1:52 left mark of the 3rd quarter. He noticeably hobbles and limp jumps right after the hand off. On the next hand off and final one of th 3rd quarter at the 1:12 mark he also hobbles but a tad less. (I had to go back to make sure this wasn’t the play. One the handoff before the 1:52 one there is no hobble or anything noticeable at all. Definitely was the 1:52 handoff to Storm near the end of the 3rd quarter.

  11. Ok….I have stopped trying to get hold of suicide hotline….(always busy when I try to call..?)….and started thinking…

So far we are NOT playing mistake-free ball. Either defense is down, or the offense is. Lots of penalties, goofs….

Maybe not having Mannion will get everyone focused and intense, all at the same time. This doesnt look like a team that gives up, folds under pressure, etc.

Vaz has been in the system long enough to know the plays, and has for a long time been one injury away from being the man….so there is no reason to be not ready, mentally.

All but one game so far has been won by the D, really, so stumbling some on offense is just the way we have played ;til now. With Mannion there was no guarantee of huge O production.

I guess we’ll see. If Vaz and the team pull out a win this week, this is indeed a special year…

  12. When I saw the spring game, Vaz looked pretty darn good which gives me hope that he can fill in. He’s been in the system long enough to know the playbook so they shouldn’t have to shrink it on him. My hope is that he can perform in place of Manion the way Lyle Moevou did in place of Sean Canfield. We have a stout D and none of the upcome few games are against teams with much of a pulse offensively.

I still like us to beat BYU. I’ve wateched several of their games and their offense is absolutely terrible. We should have no problem keeping them from putting a lot of points on the board. There D looks pretty darn good, but they also haven’t played anybody to suggest that their D is as good as their numbers suggest. I think our D will keep us in it and we are better at all the skill position players on offense (don’t forget they have quarterback injury issues too). Not time to hit the panic button yet.

  13. I’m not freaking out. This sucks majorly, but I believe in this team and Vaz. Hopefully its just a minor meniscus injury. Sometimes you can bounce back from that injury within 2-3 weeks, it just really depends.

      • MCL??? Where did you hear that?

Isaac and Suk reported earlier it’s a partially torn meniscus (per team report) and he will be having minor surgery on it this week. They’re saying out 3-4 weeks, and Suk said this type of football injury typically keeps guys off the field 2-3 weeks. He said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Mannion back in time as early as UW.

  14. I don’t believe we will have a problem at BYU with Vaz at quarterback. Like rsteve stated, Vaz has been around long enough to know the play book and execute plays. It might take the 1st quarter for him to settle in, but he is good enough to get the job done.

I believe the big key in the game will be play calling by Riley. If Vaz is getting good practices in this week then Riley has to open the play book like against UCLA and go for it. If calls plays like in Saturday’s game against WSU we could be in deep doo doo. Our defense will do the job and I hope they work on reducing the number of stupid penalties against them.

  15. ““We are going to win the game with Cody,” Riley said.” This quote is an example of the change in Riley’s attitude this time around.

There are other factors at play against BYU, Enger, Welch, and Wheaton dinged up and not practicing today is minor when compared to the penalty situation and Lettuce. At BYU we’ll see no breaks in the penalty area and there is no reason to expect Lettuce to come around all of a sudden.

That said, the D and an inspired game by the O-line can lead to a win. I certainly hope Mannion can be on the sidelines cheerleading; will never forget when James R. had to find his own way to a game after his injury. Is there anything preventing Riley from including injured players on a trip?

    • good point. At previous junctures one could imagine Riley saying something like “we’ll hope to be competitive. ” The following game being at nite vs. Utah is slightly mitigative. The atmosphere should charge up the D; national TV (in the Ducks slot); etc.

    • BYU is an independant so they have to get the refs from a differnt league. Lets hope they didn’t pick the pac-12- no help for the beavs there.

  16. I think the defense needs to rally around this. Poyer and friends need to put their proverbial arms around Vaz and make sure this team keeps the Juggernaut going.

  17. Since when do pocket QB’s need two good knees?. Wrap that up and get out there, you’re not scrambling for yards anyway. Geez, do they want a Rose Bowl or not?

  18. The defense will make plays against BYU. Just do a good job against the run and make Riley Nelson throw the ball. He’s going to give the DB’s chances to make plays, got to take advantage. I think OSU wins the next 3 games with Vaz, but the ASU game is the one I worry about. ASU can score more than BYU, Utah and UW. That’s one where Vaz is going to have to make big plays in the air. Won’t be able to rely on the defense. He’s gonna have to deliver then.

    • I think he will have to deliver before ASU. All our opponents coming up are going to gain new hope of beating us. They are likely to come in more charged up than before. If Vaz can do the job with BYU then we are back on track.

This is Cody’s big chance. SIEZE THE DAY, man. Think of the glory….the fans mobbing you…..the cheerleaders goin to bed with ya … Oh, baby!

  19. Perhaps Vaz comes into this game feeling very little pressure because he is confident in he and his teammates capabilities. Combine this with no one expecting him to live up to mannion and he surprises everyone except his teammates that know he is capable. The media is going to eat this up. You couldn’t write a better underdog script. I say he plays just fine after a series or two of adjusting to game speed.

  20. As a guy projected as the permanent understudy to Mannion, he cant ask for a bigger opportunity. Wouldnt it be ubercool if Vaz does such a great job that Riley makes him no 1, even when Mannion comes back. Mannion wasnt exactly mistake free.

  21. I dig the beard and brows, does anyone know how mobile he is, say on a 1 to 10 scale? Maybe old high school videos are the only evidence.

    • Ha wow I don’t think I’ve ever seen Cliff write such a pessimistic piece. He could be right, but I seriously doubt we’re in danger of not making a bowl game.

    • I fear he is right, and we are underestimating what Mannion has been doing for us. I hope Vaz can ball, but I am sick to my stomach right now.

    • LOL … I mean no disrespect, but what an idiot. The defense now blows because the QB is out? The offense, which has only been really efficient in one of four games, is gone?

The man must be a mormon….

        • Yup, I think Kirkpatrick stalled out as a writer a couple of years ago, he’s just trying to get some attention. With that being said, none of us have any idea how the hell Vaz is going to do in a real game situation, let’s hope his practice and training pay some dividends. We sure saw a lot of backup QB’s (a la Hays at Utah) make the Beavs pay in the last couple of years, so it would be nice to see the tables turned

  22. Sure it was a kick to the sack. All you have to do is watch the Riley interview. Sounds like he didn’t know until this morning. I do like Vaz’s confidence and I think the team does too, in the background you can here someone yell out “hey, why’s everybody around Cody?” or something like it. I expect their A game on Saturday. Underdogs again, the best Beaver role. Still sippin it.

  23. Mannion had a rough 1st game and the WSU was rough. He was off the hook with Zona and pretty good at UCLA. The upside for Mannion is endless and I really really like the kid. But he is not the all and all of the offense, he would tell you that. I think Vaz will be good after the first half of BYU if not right away. We still got the weapons out there… not throwing in the towel.

    • our running game is still pretty anemic. Without Mannion’s arm defenses can load the box, shut off the run completely and put the pressure on Vas. Wheaton may not be 100% either. I am very nervous to say the least.

  24. A source told The Oregonian that Mannion will undergo arthroscopic surgery to look at his meniscus. There is a possibility that the injury is not season-ending, and Mannion could be out only a matter of weeks.

  25. Defense will play with even more intensity and have at least one score. BYU has horrible offense and will have to get at least 3 turnovers to have a chance of outscoring the BEAVS. Vaz is just good enough for this week.
    BYU 3
    BEAVERS 13

  26. I believe Vaz in more than good. He will do great things in game against BYU as long as Riley gives him the variety of plays needed to win. I am confident in Vaz next Saturday.

  27. Listened to Vaz and Riley on with scott Lynn tonight. It was pretty similar to the above video.

Cody said that he is excited and this is what he has been waiting for (opportunity). He is confident and looking forward to the game and can’t wait for it to get here.

Riley on Vaz: they both had 50% of the snaps during camp, he has full confidence in Cody. Need to cut down on the mistakes. We had over 400 yards of offense, and a season best on 3rd down 9 of 20. So, alot of positives from game last Saturday, although there were some things to improve.

I agree with the above poster on that if they do win with him in there it can be a really special season. Either way I think it has the making of a real good story.

  28. I think this is a team with guts, so unless ol Cody gets first game fumble-itis or does panic throw int’s, I think we do ok. Face it, if the team was all just Mannion, then one good hit and the season is over ahyway.

But big question — who now is no 2?? And what happens if Vaz goes down?

  29. It would be really helpful if the #10 team in the nation could send a band, or part of a band, out to a really hostile environment this weekend. Easy way to put some Beaver Butts in the Seats. Loud fans per seat at that. And help the team not feel so alone against a team trying to damn us to hell.

  30. Our AngryBeavs Yahoo pickem had BYU 3pt favorites just now. 87% taking OSU.

I like Vaz. In fact, I would Play Vaz over P12 QBs Price, Tuel, Hays, Maynard, Nunes, Webb, Kelly.

    • Have you watched Kelly play at all this year? He is playing really well and if they hadn’t been rotating QBs verse Mizzu, ASU would have won that game. I think Kelly and Mannion have been a toss up this year.

      • To be honest, that Mizzouri game is the only ASU game I’ve really watched this season, and nice to hear excuses cause they kinda sucked in a slightly hostile environment. I’m glad we don’t go to Tempe. Asu is still the PAC South leader as of now. But yes, I do think Vaz will be better.

      • Eubanks didn’t play much against Mizzou. Kelly played like crap the first 3 quarters of that game and was a big reason why they lost and Mizzou is pretty mediocre and led by 17 after 3.

        • Kelly has completed 68% of his passes for 1292 yards and 9 TDs vs 2 INTs. Right now Kelly is a better option than Vaz. As for the Mizzu game when Kelly was hot in 4th they were still rotating QBs. There were several drivers where Eubanks would play on 1st and 2nd down and Kelly would come in on 3rd and long to save the drive. Also when they eached the 2 yardline they put Eubanks in when Kelly was on fire. I get that Eubanks is 6’5″ 240lbs but with Eubank in the game everyone knew they were going to run the ball. I believe the way Kelly was playing if you leave him in with first and goal from the 2 yd line they score and win that game.

  31. Wow, reading up on BYU qb injury. Called it fractures in his back? Said he was playing through the pain earlier this year and was giving him bad decisions. Seems like first hit by Wynn will pretty much end that experiment. Great to hear BYU giving practice reps to a broken qb though. Looking at BYU wins doesn’t impress me much either at this point. I think we are gonna light them up. The unknown quantity which is Vaz helps us, IMO, espeaccily because he’s very serviceable.

Looking at schedule, I’m taking Stanfurd over ND, and SC over LSU., and 1 more top tem team to randomly lose. So #7 and climbing :)

    • Stanford over ND is doubtful and SC has yet to play a road game like they’ll see at LSU. LSU just had a tough loss AND it’s a night game. Hard to see South Carolina winning.

  32. Well… I don’t know much about Vaz. Riley said that he loves his quick decision making and ability to get rid of the ball fast. Assuming this is not pure fluff this could be a good combo for an aggressive defense like BYU. Wisconsin and BYU are games we could have won with just a good game management QB. If we get into a game like the AZ game we will probably really miss Mannion.

  33. Wait… did Mannion have surgery last night… or this morning?
    http://blogs.denverpost.com/colleges/2012/10/09/pac12-roundup-oregon-state-qb-sean-mannion-return-season-knee-surgery/25251/

I mean, I know you usually have to wait for swelling to go down in affected areas. But that didn’t seem to be the case here since it would have been noticeable after the game. But the timing on this is extraordinary.

Hurt on Saturday; MRI on Sunday; Scoped on Monday?

Is this Ariko, Sean, coaches and doctors working efficiently? Can that be possible at OSU?

  34. Beaver fans, we have been through tough times, and if Mannion can’t play it is not going to be an easy game. But do not give up. We can win this thing! Riley is showing his true colors this year and is doing a great coaching job. Vaz is a Beaver through and through and will rise to the occasion. My prediction, a hard fought struggle but our beloved Beavers will come out on top at the end of the day.We don’t give up easy this year.

  35. Riley should take a page out of Chip Kelly’s book. Mannion’s injury is internal team business and won’t be discussed publicly.

What possible benefit is there in broadcasting to BYU a week in advance that they don’t have to prepare for one of the nations top-rated quarterbacks. He doesn’t have to lie. Don’t say anything! JB

    • If they kept it internal, we as fans would also expect SM to start and when we see Cody Vaz on the field, I know beaver nation would say, “WTF happened to Sean Mannion!? Why the F*** is he not starting?!” I would rather panic on Monday and let it sink in as a fan base, and then hope for the best. It’s more for the fans than for the opponents. Also, they don’t know how CV plays as QB.

    • Do you expect the prep for Vaz to be extremely different than the prep for Mannion? Vaz is an unknown and BYU will go through their week exactly the same. I personally hope Riley never steals any ideas from Chip.

  36. I still have faith in this team because they are pretty mentally tough, they have met every challenge thrown at them, they will find a way to overcome this.

  37. BYU has not lost at home yet, and like OSU, has a great run D (against mostly weaker competition than OSU has faced to date). Good D, home field, more experienced QB.

I still think OSU will win.

    • Looks like it’s still lost in the shuffle. ;)

Anyways, according to the News notes at the bottom of the latest OL article(look at timestamp of this comment if not viewed right away) Wheaton was in helmet shorts and cleats, but didn’t participate, Welch sat out completely and Riley said he feels they are both “doing well” meaning resting and trying to heal.

  38. Just saw on twitter that GameDay is in Corvallis to do its main feature story on the Beavers this Saturday.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what Vaz can do. Glad he is getting his shot as #1. Probably not an issue for this team, but at least this will keep OSU from getting complacent.

My guess is that Riley will have a solid game plan in place to ease Vaz into the game. Let him complete some short easy passes to get rid of the jitters. And if we can get an early lead, I would think he’ll relax and start opening up the playbook.

With a game on the road, this team might have started to lose some focus on getting better. That shouldn’t be an issue now. On the other hand, if Vaz does play really well and wins the next three games, we’ll be worried about plugging Mannion back in and disrupting the chemistry. I hate QB controversies.

      • I enjoyed seeing Mannion throw that slant to Cooks. It seemed like the slant had been missing, even when OSU’s offensive line was atrocious and quick throws were needed. I never understood that.

What does BYU run for a defensive scheme? 3-3-5 with blitzes?

        • Amen on the slants.
Seeing a game in person you see how long some of our plays take to develop. Really puts
a lot of pressure on the line to sustain their blocks.

        • I read a Boise State game preview that said in BYU’s defensive scheme the CBs play about 8 yards off the LOS, and immediately going into backpedaling. I haven’t seen any of their games yet, does this sound accurate? Also, expect them to blitz because OSU had trouble with it last week against WSU, and Storm Woods for one was forthcoming about being confused and missing blocks. However, WSU players also claimed to know the OSU plays that were coming, so that needs to be addressed to.

  39. Riley, I’m begging you!!! Go into the Truax Center…close the doors, put two managers on the entrances and practice without any observers. Tell the press.. “We need to work on some stuff.”

BYU has as large a national following as Notre Dame. See those two old codgers over there in the corner? They are immediately telling Provo all about Vaz’s foot work, how he makes all the throws, pass protection etc. No more Mr. Nice Guy. JB

    • I was surprised to see they draw about 64K for their home games?!? The large national following is a point well taken. I imagine a certain presidential candidate watches them….the other one watches Beavs Basketball.

        • Byu is a nasty environment. A very difficult place to play. The key is to come out strong and remove the crowd. To Beaver fans going to the game, good for you- they need support, but be prepared to have to listen to and put up with some pretty ridiculous stuff. People teaching their kids that it’s morally correct to hate you type of stuff.

  40. Stewart Mandel?@slmandel
RT @BrandonSprague: Source very close to Sean Mannion just informed me it is a slight tear of the meniscus and his timetable is 2-4 weeks.

  41. Business as usual today at practice. Mannion was there hobbling around sticking close to Riley. Wheaton wore a helmet and shorts, but no pads, and didn’t participate. Rogaine continued to shank field goals. Cody Vaz throws a nice a nice ball and made some good plays, but he also threw three interceptions against the scout team. He exudes confidence and is poised, but was clearly frustrated with the picks. Micah Hatfield had a good day.

Be afraid, if Vaz gets hurt, the next guy on the list, Harrington, looked shaky and nervous today. It was as if he’s been hiding in obscurity all this time, and now realizes that people are watching him.

    Beautiful day in Corvallis.

      • One was a tipped pass, two were overthrows. So not necessarily poor decisions, just not very good throws. But flip side, he made some very nice throws, including a couple of long ones. Kind of hit and miss today.

      • I take your point Pettibonehead, and I’ve wondered if somehow sharing my thoughts on what I see at practice on AngryBeavers could somehow be a bad thing, but I remember the days when I was a long way from Corvallis, and enjoyed reading just about anything I could about the Beavs.

I’d be interested to hear what others on this blog think, if the consensus is it’s a bad “deal”, I would stop.

        • The more info the better. That’s what I’m here for at the very least. If I can’t hear and know about the Beavs and what might lead to them having problems, then I’ll just gripe about imagined realities that “could have been” avoided in 20/20 hindsight world. If I know going in that so-and-so has these tendencies, and there’s just nothing anyone can do to avoid it, then 20/20 hindsight world matches reality before the game. And, though I still might be upset, I can be frustrated and let it pass rather than dwelling on it with conspiracy theories… some which hit the spot, some which don’t.

It’s not like coaches can (or do) make anything of blog posts. The best they can do as seasoned professionals is watch tape for tendencies and plan accordingly by their team to play to certain strengths and weaknesses they see.

          • Although, I do have to say that many of the positive things we’ve seen this season (attitude, phrasing, marketing, athleticism vs. “experience”, play calling, etc…) have been night and day from last season to this. If Riley didn’t read this blog in the off-season and think, “Hmmm… they make some pretty good points,” then he must have hired a sports psychologist (another suggestion) to drive those points home.

He has done these things with such verve, even vocalizing that we will win this game with Vaz, that the one thing that has been a thorn in the lay man’s fandom, his hunky-dory Mayberry attitude, is a beautiful thing to watch. He’s suddenly touted as the nicest guy in sports… well… not suddenly… but it’s as if everyone who thought so feels justified to the Nth degree to talk about the Beavs’ success in grand, national scopes. A little thing like taking your team for burgers after a win has become legend. Buying in has brought on a double entendre which is humorous, serious and nationally trending.

It’s like Riley has turned on the positive vibe switch, and everyone wants to be a part of it.

And I’ll buy in too so long as he keeps it loose while saying the right things. Nothing bothered me more than having our coach say negative or “grey area” things about his own team. Well, listening to Pollyannas try to reason through the negative in order to make a positive was annoying. And hearing it from Duck fans was pretty annoying as well. But you know what I mean.

If there’s no more talk about wondering why we didn’t have half an effort against someone, then I can always buy in. But if I ever hear coaches talk about players they recruited and decided to play despite their weaknesses in a way other than they chose to recruit and play these players… I back to bitching about life.

    • So a writer for the Barometer says learning the QB position takes time, yet the writer is most likely a 20 year old student who hasn’t spent much time watching college football.

It didn’t take Jonathan Smith time to learn the position when he was put in the game vs. Washington to backup the injured Terrance Bryant.

“Smith, a walk-on redshirt freshman quarterback, had a day he will remember for the rest of his life in OSU’s 35-34 setback at Washington when he came off the bench to relieve Bryant…Smith, playing in only his third Beaver game, entered the contest in the second quarter and again midway through the third quarter and proceeded to shatter OSU’s single-game passing record by passing for 469 yards, breaking the old record of 461 by Erik Wilhelm in 1987…”

  42. “Riley said there are no plans to change playcalling, pointing to the fact that Vaz has been in the program for four years and is more than familiar with the Beavers’ offense. “

    • Good. Wouldn’t want them to change too much, however, I would like to see them run the ball some more. Will be tough against BYU, but seeing more fly sweeps would be good. Running game is crucial for a guy making his first start. I expect Riley will call bubble screens, HB screens, play action passes to TE’s in the flat to ease Vaz into things. Deep throws I expect to see in the 2nd half, but a good running game will make it much easier on Vaz.

  43. Beaver Nation,

Tomorrow, Oct. 10, we would like to invite Oregon State students, fans and alumni to be part of a public service announcement video shoot that will promote the ‘Wear Black’ campaign for the next home football game. The video will be a representative example of what makes a supportive, yet respectful Beaver fan, and how unity can facilitate cultural awareness.

We ask for volunteers to meet at Reser Stadium dressed in black Oregon State attire at 2 p.m.

Together as a university, let’s stand united.

    Go Beavs.
