Is it me, or has Langsdork-esque play calling been slowly infiltrating since week 1?

Anyway, Mannion is playing like ass. Need to give Vaz a shot. Need a spark, I don't see Mannion winning this game so why not?

When I wrote about Riley's win cap this is the type of thing I was talking about. Chip Kelly didn't have any problem getting his team ready for Washington.

Obviously not over yet, but it feels over.

Another horrible prediction by me. Blow out? WTF was I thinking. Guess I bought into the hype. Beavs are ruining my credibility. I thought Mannion would destroy this secondary. Dude is playing like DA.

D is playing fine. This is all on the offense and coaches (worst play calling in some time). Heyward might be tipping plays off…

Go Beavs, pull one out of your ass.

  1. Imo it’s starting to look like the coaching staff screwed up by rushing Mannion back into action.

This could really mess with his and the team’s confidence.

  2. When was the last time the Beavers blocked a punt or even put pressure on the punter? Do they have an alignment to even try that when there is no momentum in the game?

      • True freshman QB starting second game played lights out. At one point they were up 44-7. Friend at the game, who is a Badger also, “where are my Gophers and what have you done with them.” Then they went Glen Mason and tried to lose in the second half. CFB = unpredictable.

  3. I saw Riley looking at his play sheet. Maybe he took back play calling?

Either that or he was going “45 X Tiger Cross 6?!?!?!” WTF is that?

  4. So is Wheaton out because he failed a protocol or are they being safe? He looked pretty animated talking to Cooks on the sideline. It seems like they do something on the sideline in the Pros and guys sometimes go back in. I know it’s probably better to be safe than sorry. I’m just getting tired of Beav receivers getting the short end of this crap.

  5. Our offense has started out anemic that last few games and this trend can’t continue (mainly home games) now it translated from last game though.

  6. Great stop by the D.

I want to say it again; the defense has been great all night, despite being in a terrible position all first half.

  7. Okay Riley, I want to see at least 10 more runs this quarter. Storm had a great 3rd, and it made everything effective and everyone comfortable.

Don’t fall in love with the pass as you are want to do.

  8. MANNION!!! YOU FUCK!!!!

Dear god Mannion, just stare down the dude that is perfectly covered. That was your worst play of the night, and that’s saying something. Jesus.

  9. HEY RILEY,

If all you do is throw throw throw, you’re going to throw 100 picks.

Just run the damn ball so we can win this thing!

  10. If you have to say, every time they interview you, “Well we just need more balance and need to establish our running game” maybe you should CALL SOME RUNS!

  11. OH MY GOD MANNION!!!

This game is 100% on Mannion and Riley; Mannion for 100 interceptions, and Riley for shitty play calling and leaving an interception machine in the game. Seriously?

    SERIOUSLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. We’d be up 28 if we would just fucking RUN THE BALL!!

But no, we HAVE to fucking throw 75 times a game, because we’re “Pro”. Dear god.

Fuck you Riley, fuck you Mannion, fuck you all.

  13. Pretty much impossible to win when the QB throws 4ints into a horrible secondary. Vaz should have been in at the half. If I can see that a coach should see it.

    • This is 75% on Riley, at least. Playcalling, keeping Mannion in, letting him play early when he isn’t ready. This is mostly on his shoulders.

Kiss that Coach of the Year goodbye, you don’t deserve it.

  14. This reminds me of when Matt Moore had that turnover ridden game in 2005. Riley stuck by him and cost us a game that kept us from a winning season. Then Matt finally made the magical “Riley change” and was awesome for six games in 2006. I’m glad his loyalty costs us a title run.

Cowardice. Pathetic fucking play calling. At least give Vaz a fucking chance. Jesus.

  15. Imo Riley used Woods too much and now he’s hurt, possibly/probably because he’s played the whole game and he wasn’t 100% coming into the game.

  16. Great story if we could win this. Defense needs to make this happen. Vaz was clutch. Give the line credit he had all day to throw that drive, Mannion didn’t.

  17. Huge sack, good TO. Still in this, but it’s not looking great.

Need one more magical drive, Vaz.

That was a SKETCHY call by Sark, too.

  18. Still in this:

3 TOs, finally got a real QB in, our line is blocking well, and remember; UW’s secondary is garbage, Mannion just made them look good.

  19. HOW THE FUCK DID WE NOT SNAP THE BALL!!!

    HOLY SHIT!!!

That is fucking insane. THeir D is just standing there jerking off and we don’t snap?

  20. Cummings and Boom today:

    About 1 million drops.

    Mannion today:

4 picks, tons of really shitty throws, murdered his best WR.

    Riley today:

80% passes, 20% runs, starting a QB who was clearly not ready.

Goodbye magical season. Fun while it lasted.

I’m going to go throw up now.

    • Pac-12 refs continue to be a blight on college football. They call PI, helmet to helmet, etc inconsistently. That being said we reamed ourselves. Obum Gwachum should hang his cleats up now…dude is no football player. He couldn’t catch if he was covered in Velcro and the ball was made of berber carpet. I just about leapt into my TV to personally bitch slap him.

Mannion needs to take this loss on his shoulder and if he’s not able, defer to Vaz. Vaz was clearly the calmer, more accurate QB today and I think the offense played with more confidence with him out there.

BTW, linebackers, yea you guys that didn’t hardly do anything today other than watch. When the back in the backfield has happy feet before the ball is snapped, keep an eye on him. He is the fucking target on the play. Shit I got tired of reading that for you.

Need to recruit linebackers…too much dead weight there.

  21. Some fans “storming’ the field because the Beavs were upset…that’s different.

Knew Riley would fuck up the time management, nothing new there. Was that a delay of game AFTER a timeout?!?

  22. Sarkisian actually thinks his team played well.

Strangely I saw it as the Beavs played like shit and still only lost by 3.

    Sark is a douche

  23. It will be ducks, ducks, ducks for two more months.
    I can’t take it.
Anyone know where an opium den is? I need to leave for a couple of months.

  24. I think we took this “magical” season way out of perspective. We were 6-0, now 6-1…. after a 3-9 season last year we can still keep our chin up. I’m just trying to find a positive after Riley boning us in the ass again.

  25. ?@Softykjr
Pass incomplete. GAME OVER. SUCK IT CANZANO

Riley was pissed at the ref I can’t tell if he thought it was PI or if it was over the start of the clock after the timeout. Either way, poor clock management. He should have called timeout a couple of other times.

Tough loss, and now you have QB controversy. Vaz’s balls looked sharp and hard, Mannion’s looked weak and fluttered and not accurate.

  26. I wish SOMEBODY in the media would ask Mike about his continual problems of managing time and timeouts.

    That was pathetic.

UO will likely drop 60+ on the Beavs again. They won’t take their foot off the gas at the half.

9 wins would still be nice, maybe Holiday bowl?

  27. Classic Mike Riley. Fuck him. Every damn year they lose a game to a team they should hammer. Things will never change. I believed in this team, but that’s my fault. I know better. Mike Riley will always find a way to lose games he should win.

  28. Joe Avezzano is not one to toot his own horn, but he tried to warn y’all against overconfidence when playing the fuskies. To little effect.

Please temper your enthusiasm in the future. Listen to Joe.

  29. I think Riley knows he f-ed his dream, did you see him bitching at the officials at the end? Nobody to blame but himself. Back to obscurity and for me Johnny Walker Red

  30. Well what did you guys expect? Watching this team through six weeks did anyone really see a team that could run the table? Welcome back to earth fellow beavs and fans. It was a good run; fun too, but you’ll soon realize that you’ve been kidding yourselves for the past few weeks.

    • I’ve said more than once this team has not put together a complete game yet. After 6 games…

I think many of us become “fans” and we’re hoping the roll would continue, but really I think we knew, the “losing-the-game-they-shouldn’t-lose” was coming before Oregon.

6-1 is better than anything Riley’s done before. Yes, they should be 7-0, but that’s college football. If they can beat Stanford, ASU, Cal, that would improvement.

      • Should beat Cal. Until today I though we would beat Stanford, now not so sure. ASU…they are going to be stinging from two losses at home and we haven’t played offensively well in 2 weeks. Bad combination. OU, forget it, no one in the Pac will even come close. God it sucks to say that.
If Mannion is not 100% he should be a man, say so, and let Vaz take center. There’s no fucking I in team.

    • No, this could just as easily be a four loss team, but every week they rose to the occasion, but you don’t win many games with a minus 3 TO margin. Kind of shows how shitty the Huskies are that the Beavs even had a chance to win or tie at the end.

  31. Grades:

QB F-: Mannion was the #2 reason we lost this game; picks, horrible passes, and got Wheaton knocked out of the game. Just absolutely terrible. Stared down receivers every play, too.
RB B: Hard to grade when we only ran the ball 3 times all game, but Storm looked good until his ankle rolled.
WRs C+: They made plays, and also dropped a ton of balls. Gwachum should never see the field again after dropping literally 5 passes in 2 quarters, murdering our momentum. Cooks had a drop but also made big plays, and Mullaney played really well.
OLine B: Sometimes they opened holes, sometimes they didn’t. Sometimes our QB had all day, sometimes he had 1.5 seconds. Slightly better than average, but that’s disappointing.
DLine B+: Only recorded one sack, but made Price throw the ball away at least 6 times. Got in the backfield, applied pressure despite only rushing 3/4 almost every play.
LBs D+: We have LBs? I remember exactly 2 plays they made, and that’s it. Our LB crew killed our D last year, and it’s trying to again this year.
Secondary B+: One pick, only a few decent passes given up; they played pretty well considering how often the defense was on the field. Martin played solidly a second time.
Special Teams B: Punting was good except for one. Kicking was “Good” in that Lettuce made them all, but a few were pretty ugly.
Coaching F-: Riley should be completely removed from COTY discussions after this game. Starting a QB who was CLEARLY not ready. Then calling an atrocious game where he lost several pages of the running playbook and just threw threw threw. No creativity at all until we were almost completely out of the game, THEN he rediscovered the screen and the run. Plays a project receiver who is absolute garbage and dropped at least 5 passes. And THEN, our QB who is staring down receivers and throwing tons of picks stays in the game until there are 8 minutes left. This was an EPIC coaching failure, and it absolutely cost us the game.

It looks like lots of Bs, but Fs in the two most important categories make this game an easy D, at best. And our D game lost by 3 on the road. That should be encouraging, but it isn’t.

When does basketball start, so it can break my heart too?

    • I thought the two weeks of rest were going to be good for Mannion, didn’t expect 4 ints.

The line STILL needs to improve its run blocking. There’s yet to be consistent (game-to-game) control the line of scrimmage where Woods et al run free or grind it out…the running game is still complimentary, and I think its a mindset from the coaching staff on down to the offense.

The longest running play for OSU this year is 30 yards (how many of those does UO have in a game?). UW was giving up 190+ a game until tonight, and I thought OSU would get a long run or three…wrong.

  32. I hope Vaz starts next week. Will it happen? I doubt it. Mannion is good but he isn’t quite recovered from his surgery. He had to take an extra step on every pass tonight. His release was slow and that led to two of his four picks. My question is why the fuck couldn’t the coaches see that in practice? Damn it feels bad to be a beaver fan.

    • The coaching staff just never seems to get it. Happens every year. Riley finds a way to lose games he should win. Absolutely no excuse to losing to a team like Washington.

      • Riley seemed pissed at the end of the game. Even chased a ref down. Riley was too conservative in play calling tonight and I’ll bet it was becasue he knew Mannion was limited. Mannion shouldn’t have played. I feel that Vaz would have won this game for us.

I thought the Beavs looked about as bad as SC today. Offensively the QB’s let both teams down.

What is with us not being able to make in game adjustments in the first have. They’re running the ball down our throat and we can’t do anything about it??? Did we suddenly forget our vaunted run stopping defense? Haven’t seen that against…essentially any team that wants to run against us. Oh, could we please leave a big defensive hole in the middle of the field. Really enjoyed seeing that for crucial third and long completions.

Beavs try not to choke the season away. Leave Cougin it to Wazzu.

  33. I had mentioned that I was puzzled by the stories about how disappointed Vaz was by Riley’s decision to go back to Mannion, but now I know he was disappointed because he is a better goddamn quarterback or at least was practicing better that Sean the Sacred.

  34. On the flip side Mullaney is a beast and it appears we have found Wheatons replacement for next year which is good because for a quarter it appeared that Gwachum was the guy they picked for that spot.

    • True story; Mullaney looked awesome, and I’m glad we settled that argument this year, instead of waiting till next.

Also, to damper people’s love affair with Cody just a bit; most of us were excited for Sean to come back. Also, UW didn’t spend a week preparing to bat down all his passes like BYU and Utah did.

That all being said, Vaz was clearly the right QB tonight, and a coach that could stay up past 9:30 would have realized that well before the fourth quarter.

Tonight sucks, but keep in mind that we’re 6-1, and every single person here would have taken a 6-1 start at the beginning of the season. This loss hurts right now, but we still have so much potential, and are locked for a bowl game already; now we’re just playing to see how good of a bowl it will be. If we win out, we still control our destiny.

    • Gwachum played scared. I had hopes for him because of his unreal leaping ability, but it looks like the coaching staff got this one right. It has to be Mullaney going forward if Wheaton can’t go. Wheaton seemed fine on the sideline though, so hopefully he is back next week.

  35. Dammit! Can someone tell me why the hit on Wheaton did not warrant a PF penalty when the hit by OS in the second half was clearly leading with the shoulder (at least more than Wheaton’s) and that was a PF penalty. The Pac 12 refs are still the worst…at best they are inconsistent.

Pure and simple this loss is on Mannion. His passes looked like they were thrown by a QB that was having difficulty planting his feet. I thinketh his knee was bothering him and he should have sat. Now we have a full blow QB controversy. I’m a Mannion supporter but I think Vaz is the best choice right now.

On the plus side we’re still 6-1, on the minus we have an ASU team coming in with a high octane pass offense, that is stinging from a loss. This smells really bad for us. Our offense is stagnant the past two games (Langsdorf??? please no!!!) and play calling is too conservative. We have been winning with balls to the walls play calling…not what we have been seeing the past two games.

Man I live in the Seattle area…now I gotta live with this shit until the Fuskies lose again.

  36. I just kind of hate the play calling. Even that final sequence, why throw 20 yards downfield on first down? Dink and dunk, you just need 10 yards for a FG attempt. Hell even a draw is an option with all of your timeouts. The Beavers just make things so hard, when other decent teams have a method.

  37. I also think Mannion was a bit exposed tonight. He has constantly locked onto receivers all this year but it has gone unnoticed because Wheaton is so damn good he can beat the coverage every time. With him out Mannion kept locking on and throwing to guys who couldn’t get open leading to most, if not all of his interceptions.

    • That’s a good point, although I think Vaz did some of the same thing last week against Utah. Cooks just needs designed touches like James Rodgers when he was healthy. and then bust a long route for the kill.

  38. Duck fans are now whining about how us & USC losing is gonna keep them out of the BCS title game. That at least made me smile a little after such a horrible game

    • I really hate that the Ducks put me in position to root for USC, but I am going to. I will also be rooting for KSU too. You know Notre Dame could very well run the table also.

    • I don’t know. The reality is that the Beavs are an ok team, who have a knack for making plays when needed in close games. They couldn’t quite come up with that play to put them over the top tonight, so I don’t know how you coach that.
Even Riley said that the team was a mystery to him at the start of the season. Mannion took a big step back and it may be because of the injury, but Vaz was clearly the better player tonight. Is this going to go on for the next season and a half? Riley has some decisions to make and he hasn’t always handled that well.

  39. If I could summarize succinctly, the frustration here is not losing, its how the Beavers lost. The talent was there to win, the reason to win was there. The coaching staff makes such slow progress on their shortcomings. DB’s are looking for the ball these days, that’s improvement. Riley still doesn’t know how to manage a clock or his timeouts. Maybe he’ll demonstrate progress on that topic in 2018.

  40. What hurts most is the Beavers lost to a team they should have beaten. I could deal with a loss to Oregon cause Oregon is the team to beat in the conference, but UW? No. They needed the Beavers to Sh*t the bed to squeak out a win. Beavers are better but played down to competition and it ultimately burned them.

    • Yeah, I kind of pegged the away game at Stanford as the first loss of the year, but every game left on the schedule is a toss up excluding Oregon. 10-2 would still be a hell of a regular season, we will see how bad they want it.

  41. Huge Beaver fan here. It’s been a tough last couple weeks for me because I have come to the realization that the team I root for has the stupidest fans in all of sports. They have a great start to the season and start out 6-1 and people start bitching and whining about how bad of coach they have. Is it Riley’s fault we dropped first downs all night? (Before you bitch about Boom remember that Cooks and Wheaton both dropped first down passes) It’s not his fault nobody broke a tackle the whole first half). Speaking of the first half, the only reason we were in the game the first half was because of the defense. Oh wait… that doesn’t fit the narrative of this website and how horrible Mark Banker is, so we won’t mention how they kept us in the game. Instead lets rip the QB who was our savior when he carried us to the victory over U of A.

I saw the same thing with DA. In college all I ever heard was how he was the worst player who ever lived, but then we he had a good season with the Browns everybody loved him and was claiming him as a Beav. Then he has a bad year and becomes a backup again and you couldn’t get an OSU fan to claim him if you paid them.

    • Bitching because he still can’t manage a clock or timeouts, it’s been a pattern. Just like his players, he has to learn. If his players are dropping passes or not breaking tackles, that just brings into specific relief his need to manage the clock well when the game is on the line.

The defense was doing well in terms of yardage, I think everyone knows the INT’s kept Washington in the game.

How do you see Riley responding this week? Confident decision about a starting QB?

How do you see the players responding – do we finally see a complete game?

We’re not bitching because OSU’s 6-1, but rather because it was a winnable game against a team with less talent punctuated by a chronic, demonstrably empirical coaching behavior, poor time management.

    • Sorry, I missed your gear switching from college to pros, but then I kind of missed your whole point. You were talking about what a great coach Riley is and then you were talking about how OSU fans disowned Derek Andersen????

  42. Pretty similar to the way people on the site find a way blame every loss on Riley (Clock management, sticking with a qb, play calling, etc). The same people don’t seem to find a way to credit him when he wins a game. Pretty tough to win respect when every loss is your fault and every win is won in spite of you.

    • Completely agree with you. Mike Riley is an excellent coach and OSU is lucky to have him. Many people on this site credit Bray with the improvements which is just fucking ridiculous.

Gwachum clearly cannot catch a ball and Mike Riley gets shit on for playing him. But he also got plenty of shit for not playing him.

The fans on here are not typical beaver fans at least. An inpartial observer would point to the comment sections on this website as typical bandwagon fans.

Mike Riley put his team in a position to win despite poor play from his QB, his WRs and refs that missed a key helmet to helmet penalty that changed the feel of the game.

      • Mike Riley recruited Obum and put him close to the top of the depth chart. You can’t have it both ways coward. We fans are not responsible for having only 8-9 offensive lineman on a roster of 100 last year. We are not responsible for supervising a foul mouthed Offensive Line coach whose primary teaching technique is spewing obscenities as loud as possible. The aw shucks act does not fake out or cancel observations of prospective student athletes. That good cop bad cop routine only confuses kids. We are not responsible for Kyle Wittingham and others outmanuevering and outcoaching Riley the past two years. The BS about Oregon State being superior because it runs “pro” or “NFL” offenses and defenses is nonsense. The Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars run “pro” or “NFL” schemes and they are terrible. So, is it Mike Riley’s position that in his fat gig at OSU he is emulating the Bills or Jags? Give Mike Riley credit when it is due. But at his pay grade, he is often outwitted on the field of play and needs to man up. I do not think the baseball coach would tolerate slow in game adjustments or lazy thinking.
