If the winner of this game stays in the top 14, they're going to the Rose Bowl.
That's what is on the line.
That Washington loss is going to look worse as the season progresses–even with a win vs Stanford we'll be nail biting.
Here's a Stanford perspective from gomightycard. I usually do yearly interviews with them but passed this year; Cliff fields some questions. I think he's close to the mark on his analysis. The pivotal matchup is the Beav's run game vs the Cardinal D. If the Beavs get 100 yards they win.
One thing to watch for: Stanford's new QB. We always joke around about backups coming in and lighting it up. Let's see if it happens again.
Tough call, but I like Stanford in a close game, even though I think Stanford and their coach are both overrated. I think they'll shut down the run game (not a big Ward fan, Woods isn't himself, and Agnew fumbles) and that'll lead to trouble in the passing game.
24-16
27-24 Beavers. Beavers force a big turnover on defense in the 4th quarter and hold on and beat Stanford. Vaz goes 22 of 33 for 272 yards and 2 TD’s and 1 INT.
Made the trip down to watch this game. I have never been to a beaver game outside of reser. Should be awesome.
Have fun. If you like Mexican food, there is a fantastic little joint in an open air mall right across the main street from the stadium. All outdoor seating and sometimes slow, but worth the wait.
The key to this game will be MR’s play calling. If he stubbornly sticks to his usual play selection, we will lose. I don’t think our O-line will be able to hold up to allow the five to six seconds that a lot of our pass plays require. This will get Cody killed or lead to forced picks. Beavs huge advantage in this game is Cooks and Wheat against their secondary. If they go with a gameplan similar to the one against the Fadgers, mixed in with some of the slants that we have seen against UCLA, we have a shot. This game will show us how good our O-line is, as Stanford’s front seven is good. This is the biggest game since 09 CW. A win jumps us past FSU into top ten BCS. Hope the team is starving for some In N Out……………..burgers.
Game seems similar to BYU. Stanford’s D is excellent vs short passes and on the edges. Gotta hit em deep.
Stanford’s new QB Hogan was able to make gains on broken plays vs Colorado, several of which could have been sacks. He only threw the ball more than 10 yards downfield twice, both to Tuilolo. Stanford’s O is pretty limited and isn’t as good as BYU. Stanford’s O will be in trouble if forced to pass a lot.
I like the Colorado Curse factor. Also like the fact that Stanford is amped for next week’s game in eugene with Gameday.
Stanford fans are smug and arrogant like their coach.
Heading up to the game from the LA area. Theres a good amount of orange at the airport. Go Beavs!
This is the year of close wins…I say Beavs 24-17.
I think the addition of Hogan plays into our hands. I’m guessing it easier to come off the bench against Colorado with no expectations, than to know you are the starter the next week facing a solid defense with a week to prepare.
To sum: Stanford is going to attempt a reverse Vazectomy-not always a succesful procedure!
(Apologies to Beavergopher)
I have no idea who’s going to win. I don’t like Mike Riley in pressure games with TV audiences. The fact that this is very likely for the Roses has the potential to play two ways – one, he takes his “just-happy-to-be-here” approach and chokes, or two, he two thinks back to his obvious pain since the 09 CW and says “Not this time.” Last week, he made a rare reference to the team’s record, apparently saying “You’re 6-1, what are you going to do with it?” before the game. Today will he say, “You said you wanted to go to the Rose Bowl this year, here’s your chance. What are you going to do with it?” I think Riley and Cav need a special pre-game meeting with the O-line and say “Guys, we need to put this one on your backs today.” Or Commander Cody can say it on the sidelines.
OSU’s D need to play it’s best of the year, because the offense, even though it has usually done better on the road this season, is going to have a tough time. The challenge of OSUs D for Hogan should be orders of magnitude greater than his coming-out party at Colorado. That will force him into a few mistakes.
OSU’s TEs need to CATCH the ball today. Can’t waste opportunities in a tight game. No worries about Wheaton, Cooks, Cummings, or Mullaney.
Crowd shouldn’t be difficult for Vaz. This is Stanford, and they may be more vocal than usual, but still not a hostile environment.
Maybe, just because of the odds, and because he doesn’t win these types of games, Riley breaks through today. An In-N-Out Burger is not far away. Win the game, get some burgers, get the Juice flowing again.
Coach Cav has already been quoted as requesting “8 seconds of violence each play” from his O-line in this game. Let’s hope he’s got those guys revved up.
Stanfords D has a knack for punching the ball loose while tackling the ball carrier. ball security is the name of the game today.
This game will probably be close, and turnovers and special teams plays are likely to determine the outcome. And of course there is always the injury factor (losing a key player early in the game, as OSU lost Wheaton against the Huskies).
That being said, I think there are two obvious focal points for today’s game:
(1) OSU’s ability to protect the passer and provide time for Vaz or Mannion to find receivers who are likely to be open downfield;
(2) OSU’s ability to limit the Stanford running game — including containing runs and scrambles by new QB Hogan — especially on first downs.
If this turns into a contest of passing games, and the OSU o-line can protect the QB, OSU wins. OSU has clearly superior WRs and QBs (plural).
If Stanford is able to gain 5+ yards with some regularity on first down runs, and keep new QB Hogan out of 3rd-and-long situations, Stanford wins.
My prediction: OSU wins, 21-17, and ends up in the Rose Bowl.
Go Beavers!
I hope Nielsen doesn’t have to come in for Isaac at center. A walk-on utility guy playing on the road against the best rush defense does not sound promising, particularly with the center’s responsibilities.
Agreed. But I’ve watched Isaac play all through high school, and now for OSU, and know that he is an extraordinarily tough kid. Isaac will play through pain. It will take a major injury to sideline him.
Thanks, silver, I needed that.
Off topic, but I just noticed that Nicholls State is on Oregon’s non-conference schedule next year. Guess they like traveling to the Northwest.
OSU has E.Washington, Hawaii and San Diego State. Should get off to a good start again next year. Hopefully none of those turn into the Fresno State game of 2001 (or 2003).
Little worried about Kicking on Stanfords natural and terrible footing grass. Even Stanford kickers have problems kicking at home….
It goes for WR and RB too…
Solid assignment football by the Beavs D will force Hogan into multiple errors. Maintaining lanes to prevent scrambles by the new QB is likely to be key.
Add to that decent play calling by MR, a complete game by Isaac, and winning the TO battle and the Beavs will make a statement today. Easy huh?
We’ll see…………..Beavs 27-13?
Ward impressed me most with his hard-hitting the hole last week and his blocking. While Agnew and Woods are both quick, Terron just seemed more aggressive, enough so that I’d like to see him in a 3 RB rotation more regularly. Until one RB clearly separates himself from the 3 I say continue RB by committee.
Everyone thinks this will be a low scoring, tight game. I think the Beavs put it together this week going into the final stretch. 35-7 Beavs.
Yup, its always opposites day with Beavers predictions…. I’ll say close game…
52-49
Ballsy prediction.
exactly. before the OSU BYU game they said first to 10 would win.
Arrived in SF yesterday,,,great weather, cool and sunny, perfect for football.
The city is crawling with Duck fans in their ridiculous multicolored gear; green, yellow, silver, white and our beloved black, toss in a garnish of feathers and steel plating to it off.
I have a bad feeling about this one, almost the way I felt about UW and we know how that turned out. Don’t want to predict a score….we’ll see. JB
PBH, jet-setter
Yeah, I am assuming Hogan is better than Nunes with my prediction. If he is equal or worse, Beavs are in good shape. I didn’t watch him vs CO, though. I just see some Stanford people raving about him, and know the unknown backup always torches the Beavs.
Louisville getting killed……..advantage Beavs.
Was just about to post that. Win this game, and we move up one by default.
Florida also getting tested vs ULL, but you know the SEC bias, they could win by 1 in 9OT’s and they wouldn’t lose ground.
Haha. You are right.
LMFAO
They had no business being ranked that high
Pretty good Qb and Strong is a good coach, but you are right Angry. The Gophers beat the “Cuse”,
so what does that say about Louisville.
BTW. Thanks again for not aborting the site. Buy you a beer in Pasadena?
Northwestern is going to beat Meechicken>>>>>>>>>>>>>Woooooooooooo!
Woods not seeing the wholes there, c’mon Beavs!
Terrible first possesion you get the ball on their side of the field and move 2 yards.
Woods looks really bad. Need to get Ward in the game
Disappointing series. After two bad runs, gotta assume that it’s 4down territory and run again.
Best run d in the country? DIVE DIVE SCREEN. Langsdorf?
That second play woods had a nice hole, and ran right into the back of the RG. Does he run with his eyes closed?
Agree Woods looks bad.
This is just classic Riley.
You have a deader than dead crowd.
You get a turnover in their territory.
Your RUN two crap plays for nothing.
3 and out.
No aggressiveness off the top to kick them in the teeth and get them down.
He should have been running vs Washington and passed. Should be passing vs Stanford and runs.
Though, they do need 100 yards on the ground today or S’s D will tee off. I’d pass first, then use draws to establish run, though.
Picking on Rueben
Again Rueben. Killing us on this drive
Banker is horrible
Theyre driving with ease. Were toast if we don’t get a whole hell of a lot of turnovers.
Where’s welch (Alexander)?
I hate the option. All types of it.
D hasn’t made a stop yet in the Q, we’re only half way through and they have over 100 yds to our 3.
Fuck
Easy call, stupid tree
Isaac with the hold. more penalties, poor execution
Ticky tack is right.
It’s looking like a long day. Wheaton misses the block he usually makes
Not looking goo boys.
When is the hook for Vaz????
MANNION
Vaz looks like he looked at the beginning of last week’s game. Really shaky.
Do these guys know we’re playing for a chance to got to the Rose Bowl?
Maybe that’s their problem
Does not appear they do.
@CliffGT
Still no DJ Alexander this drive. It’s Rueben Robinson. He must be hurt.
?@kerryeggers
Beavers’ total offense through first two possessions: minus-4 yards.
Wow the D has no answers
This looks like last year.
Riley will win plenty of games to get to a big game, but then can’t win the big game. How many tries does it take him?
D looks like dog shit.
It’s a whole team effort:
?@kerryeggers
Stanford 3 for 3 on third-down conversions. Total offense to this point: Cardinal 156 yards, OSU minus-4.
3rd and 10 and gets the 1st by two yds
Tree 3-3 on 3rd down conversions
No pressure.
Too much Reuben Robinson and Sean Martin. Going to lose playing those guys this much vs good teams.
Another backup QB lighting up the Beavs. The trend is your friend, folks.
Our D looks like they’re already giving up. Hand on hips, dejected looks on their faces. It is looking like another 35-0 drubbing.
Having flashbacks to 08 CW. How can they be so flat?
Gashing us on the runs
Women’s bb – 2 pm PT
Any way Stanfurd can beat Oregon, they always seem to choke against them?
Wow. This is the attack Ruben Robinson Show.
10 play drive again. The only thing that’s stopped them is the fumble. 14-0 and total yards about 180 to -4.
They are running the same 3 plays over and over again?!?
why change what works
That is likely game.
Win cap in action, baby.
Offense needs to step up here.
Sumbitch….they did….
Well it was fun.
We look very confused out there. I don’t see us making any adjustments. We also don’t have the depth, Welch hurt.
Watching ESPN boxscore, Stanford appears to be putting on a clinic regarding ball control, offensive balance, and time of possession.
Anybody on OSU O going to pay attention?
Banker……………make an adjustment!
I said before the game that this was the one that would decide whether we were posers or not.
Too bad our kick returner is slow as molasses. There was a big crease there.
Ward has gotta be the slowest kick returner in the conference
Did you miss the memo? Terron Ward is all world.
Forget what he’s done his entire career, he lit up ASU with the help of a ref.
nice grab by Wheaton on the back shoulder throw
Classic beavs luck that Stanford finds the heir apparent at qb right before they play us. Watch Cal do the same thing this week.
I – I – I – I – I – I – have become … comfortably numb.
Need more beer for that.
Nice backshoulder.
Our Safeties look terrible too. We better make this a shootout, just start slinging it, because the defense doesn’t look like they can stop them.
wow, couple of nice runs there.
I HATE IT HATE IT HATE IT when they wait until they get behind to get aggressive in the play calling. Why do I follow this team.
9 yards on first downs is good
So the O has settled down but you can’t spot 14 points before you decide to play
Four down territory. Don’t settle now
Like the fight their are showing here.
That’s why I like Woods, moves the feet and gets the extra yards
touchdown, and I hate your style Rilesdorf.
Excellent drive, now the D has to get a stop
Ward is a tough SOB. I’d like to see him get a few more touches.
I thought they would have to pass to get back in this, but they went run and succeed. Great fight. Now let’s see if the defense can get a clue.
We need DJ Alexander in there. He must be hurt bad.
Anybody know what the story is?
D needs to pull their heads out of their asses.
Thanks Riley for wasting the entire first quarter just like at UW.
No shit
He was just setting up the game plan, make the opposing D coodinator think Danny is calling the game
Prince had a nice hold on the TD!
I saw that too.
Well we stopped that QB/FB slide option pass… Maybe we are making adjustments.
Defense has got to step up here!
Scott C wiffs on a sack.
Why do we have to get punched in the mouth in order to wake up?
amen. It’s Riley trickle down. He’s willing to wait around for the tone of the game to come to him and allow the other team to create tempo, not vice versa.
We thrive on abuse?
We are missing his speed on the edge so bad.
Alexander that is
?@LindsayRae19
DJ Welch/Alexander getting worked on by trainers on the sideline. Maybe a stinger? Was pointing to his neck/shoulder area.
Upper body muscle strain, he may return.
horrible mark????
Chip would go for it here
And make it.
Haha.
I wouldn’t have punted that. That’s way too conservative. We haven’t stopped you all day, you need less than 1 yard (thanks to a garbage spot).
rush the punter please…
a high school rush would’ve had a block there
So if Mike Riley was featured in a commercial what product would it be?
Rogaine?
Gum!!!!!
Corvallis Library
c’mon Cody, hit him in stride.
nice read on the pass to Hamlett
do not kick
Gotta go
Might be unconventional, but I love going for it with less than a yard to go. Love that.
Good job, now punch it in
I like Caleb Smith in there. Use him.
Boy, Ward runs with pop.
Interesting that Ward has become the red zone back
Would love to see some play-action and throw a slant to Wheaton/Cooks
It’s nearly halftime… Games been on less than an hour.
Off topic: A&M up 14-0 on Alabama
God would that be great.
why?
Why? They would only drop one spot. They’d go to #2, and Notre Dame would go to #1. The BCS, and all polls in general are biased and worthless.
Four 7 minute drives will do that.
14-14 at the half would be good news for Beaver fans
?@JHuntweet
Hogan and Vaz are a combined 20 of 25 so far…
Roll out. Just don’t throw it to Obum!
spoke too soon
damn, heck of a play by the defender there, Vaz was 9-9 before that
Yeah, and the receivers were covered. Seems like two runs would have been the call.
Important to hold Stanford for the remaining 2 minutes, get the ko to start the 2nd half.
Lettuce earns another crouton.
Guy was open. Great play by the LB.
After Stanford went up 194 to minus-4 in yards; the Beavers have outgained the Cardinal 160 to 9 yards.
D is sucking again
Stanford #4, no guts ran out of bounds way too soon.
FUMBLE!!!
Zimmerman
Big call here.
Win the TO game!!
Gonna waste the timeouts I see
I really wonder what he does with those unused timeouts
Poyer with the strip. Stud.
Horrendous throw by Vaz.
Kelly beaten badly, Wide open.
whew!
stupid Riley!!!!!
Agree, Wtf?
The one time he should kneel down he goes aggressive.
Dodge a couple of bullets, time to make the adjustments and win the game
Good fight back. not there yet. We get ball first, getting the lead would be huge here.
Riley, “we got beat up front and missed a wide open Cummings” (Kelly). “Gotta shore up things up front”
Other scores”
USC 14-14 ASu
A&M 21-0 Alabama in Ala.
Love to see such a strong beaver fan, band, and cheerleader presence at this game.
Gotta love a strong beaver Jason.
I’m so angry that the Beavers didn’t run it on 3rd and 2 from the 3 yard line. Still fuming
Yup, give it to Anderson twice.
Tree did stuff Anderson the one time he ran. D gave up 285 yds in the first half, have to do better. Tree isn’t going to turn it over twice in the second hafl
Tuberville=lying p.o.s.
Can’t wait to see the fall out from this.
What happened? Was he the one that slapped his GA?
Whenever something embarrassing like this happens I’m thankful for the character and relatively clean program Riley heads.
Is your new moniker a protest against PBH’s verbal abuse?
Naw, just poking fun at myself. PBH and I are cool… for now.
This half comes down to our O line and D line, if they can win the line we win.
Anybody know of a stream?
One more Mirror Pond and I should have one.
Good ‘un!
I’m tempted by a 10 Barrels IPA myself. The Mirror Pond just doesn’t feed the hop addiction…
That TD calls for a 10 barrels…..
http://www.thefirstrow.eu/watch/152241/2/watch-11-oregon-state-vs-14-stanford.html
Thanks btw
no hole and woods makes a good run out of it
Wynn with a little too hefty slap to congratulate Woods.
Why do we always start games playing like shit?
another underthrown ball. nice play call though
Vaz is not making good throws.
Vaz with all kinds of time and a bad throw by Cody
I think that is the first time that tunnel screen has worked all year.
Worked against UCLA but aside from that it hasn’t been done well.
great patience by Cooks, and Vaz nice poise.
First penalty of the game. Never a good time but that hurts
need to get the lead here
tough break, hang on to that!
A good pass and it’s a TD, too late
Whooaaa!! Wheaton, great block downfield!!!! Nice play
YES!!!
Big play to Wheaton. Underneath for the TD. Vaz just hasn’t been able to hit the over-the-top plays.
Wheaton! What a player, took a play or two off (on the sideline) before that TD, he deserved it.
Great job by Vaz, took a hit that pass, after he put the previous pass to Cooks right on his hands. Good composure
note to Riley: you have weapons…you use them…you don’t wait until the second quarter to use them.
Vaz to Wheaton!
Wheaton is awesome. Speed kills.
Alexander won’t be back today, muscle strain.
holding!
Stanford racking up the penalties.
hold on tree, nothing hole doesn’t do every play
PICK IT!!!! Fifita tipped it
love to see that defensive teamwork.
Big pick on the pressure by the D line
Ru, great tip.
Now put the knife in!!
3 points ain’t no knife.
But, kicking into the wind and making it (barely) should help Romaine’s confidence.
sweep on the short side again, always??
Isaac has been shakey all day today.
Poor play calling kills a drive off a turnover again.
Offense has done nothing with the turnovers. This was a big blown opportunity
TO’s at least have stopped drives for tree.
After missing his first 2 FG Romaine is 12-14. The whole lettuce thing is overdone. Let’s cut him some slack.
Yep I’ve never really criticized him, he just always worried me a little bit.
You tear, not cut lettuce.
I LOLd.
“lettuce” isn’t derogatory, been calling him that since the beginning. In fact I was his biggest supporter.
Officially moves from lettuce to Romaine.
Like
Three for Free.
Win cap…
Lettuce looking fresh! Solid kicks with confidence. Is he turning the corner?
He worries me far more on XP
Wish we could have got 7
Watkins!!
DEFENSE comes alive!
ONE HANDED WATKINS?!?
Only needs one.
Let’s take advantage of this great field position, punch it in. Got them on their heels a little bit.
Strange, its november snowing here, but I detect the faintest smell of roses…let it be so…
Again, put the knife in! Please MR, call aggressive plays! Cooks is due.
@ESPN_Pac12blog
Stanford first quarter against Oregon State: 14 pts, 194 yards. Since then: 0 pts, 93 yards. Tip the cap to Beavers DC Mark Banker.
Slant all day!
He will probably call low % throws and give the ball right back. Slants to Cooks and Wheaton please.
Thank you!
Beaver fans are louder than the tree fans. When a tree falls in the stadium does it make any noise?
Oh Boy
@John_Hunt
OG Grant Enger helped off the field; in comes super sub Derek Nielsen…
Damn.
Hopefully Enger isn’t hurt too bad.
big3rd down here
Ouch
Kevin cummings is such a fucking pussy. GET HIM OFF THE FIELD
Loving the heart of romaine! Ok, that’s the last lettuce joke I can think of.
Great job again by Watkins!
SHIT just when you think the D has it going
Heck of a play there.
Need a stop
WTF, nice tackling!
Having a QB spy some time during this game would be nice.
No shit. Taking FG’s are going bite our ass.
16 should’ve had him, but that was a heck of a stiff arm on Watkins(?)
How big is settling for 2 FGs now? Stanford D is stepping up. We need 7 here or we lose this game.
Play calling inside the 30 and red zone really hurts now. Settling for FG’s kept Stanford in this and it’s a 2 point game.
Yup.
4th Q for all the marbles. Really can it get any better than this?
Yes. We could be kicking their ass.
Time to see a little of Ward.
Anyone else think the announcers are rooting for Stanford?
Ya.
not listening that close but I don’t get that impression
Some of these throws by Vaz have not looked good today.
Where in the heck was that ball going?
int
Cody playing badly.
Vaz?
How about Florida needing a blocked punt at home just to beat the ragin cajuns? They should drop in the polls.
What a catch!
BRANDIN COOKS!!!! WHAT. A. CATCH.
Why doesn’t Cooks return kick-offs?
Vaz has missed a ton of wide open receivers
Again Isaac with another poor snap,
Vaz is killing the Beavers right now. Just cannot hit an open receiver. He’s needed Wheaton and Cooks to bail him out on bad throws.
Yup, and now the wind is at his back. He has guts, may turn it around.
still think there is more on the ground, we could take advantage of.
Bizarre play calling. Woods with an 11 yard run and then Riley abandons the run.
Not bizarre. Does it all the time.
Was sticking with it in the 2nd quarter and third, but now in the 4th abandons it. Typical Riley.
yup
Another Pepcid AC finish. Too bad we didn”t play the 1st quarter.
Mobile QB problem
Poyer has been invisible
3rd downs, need a stop
RR pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reynolds int!!!
PUT THE KNIFE IN!!
Another tree turnover. Offense needs another 7 minute drive for TD
I would blow a guy for one of them 7 minute touchdown drives from the second qtr.
A long drive and score a TD and it’s about over. Need to stick with the run. Woods has looked good from the 2nd quarter on. Stanford hasn’t shown they can stop it and Vaz can’t hit a receiver. No reason to throw it much unless they have to.
Wow.
Hey you guys have a faster feed! Thanks for killing the suspense LOL.
GREAT D.
followed by a big hole
Vaz with 4 fumbles the last 2 games
He’s no Quizz
Make them pay for the penalty
Great tackle by Watkins
Shaw thinks that Romaine will miss the PAT on the Beavs game winning TD drive
Still a lot of time…
get your lettuce crispers and dressing out…it’s time to bow down to the great one!
Is that Vaz’ 6th fumble in 4 games?
I thought it was about 12 or was it 15
Oh boy, Vaz looks rattled.
piss poor play calling
Yep, crunch time, run the ball twice to Ward if you have to.
Vaz has completely choked this game away. JackBeav, you win the Vaz vs Mannion debate. I’d say Mannion needs to start the next game but what does it matter anyways? NOBODY BOWL here we come!
I was so ready to eat crow. I wanted to do so. I wanted to say that Cody was better than one perfect drive per game.
I am sad.
1st and 5 and don’t get it done
If the Beavers get the ball back, I would put Mannion in the game. Vaz is terrible right now.
PUNT!??!?!???? We haven’t stopped them squarely all game! That was 4 down drives that needed a TD. See ya guys later.
Big third down here. Game probably in the balance here
Lousy situation for a team that can’t manage time…
that was Reuben guys.
piss poor play calling by both coaching staffs
Wow, Riley doesn’t have any time outs left
we can, should, and will handle this. Wheaton and Cooks.
ya, minus to me.
Poyer is not 100% shouldn’t have him returning, needed wheaton there.
get rid of the ball!
Can the Cody Vaz experiment be over now? He, not Riley lost this game.
He disappeared in the second half…
He went 1-11 on the finals drives with a fumble. Missed several throws.
I gotta agree, total meltdown by Vaz. So disappointing, but better than losing to the Fuskies. At least we lose to a decent team.
Great blocking by the OL
Against fronts like that, seems like Vaz has to get outside. Difficult to believe he could see the field.
Game over, can’t believe that they pissed this one away. Kelley’s penalty killed them
No. Vaz killed them. 3rd and 2. Terron Ward WIDE OPEN out of the backfield. Takes a sack instead. What a fucking joke. Hip hip! Go fuck yourselves beavs
Nice accuracy by Mannion on that play, a bit lower, maybe.
Back to a mediocre bowl game….
Once again, Mannion > Vaz by a mile. There’s a reason Mannion was the starter. Riley should have put Mannion in the game 3-4 series ago. Riley deserves a lot of blame. He knew Vaz was melting down and refused to make the change.
MR does stick with his decisions about players a bit too long. I thought that Vaz would turn it around all day long, until it was late in the 4Q and by then maybe it wouldn’t have mattered
All the old tendencies and program behaviors back today; young mobile qb plays well against them, can’t get it done when it counts.
I don’t know why you think Vaz is mobile.
Remember that win cap we talked about? Here comes 8 wins.
If Mannion has a good week of practice I’d say he is back to being the starter, one game too late.
I guess the Beavs WILL be playing Nic State for sure.
Worst coaching call in the game was the 4th & 2 punt at midfield on the next to last drive.
At that point, if they pick up a couple 1st downs they win anyway, field position really doesn’t matter that much.
If we don’t make it, we have the same opportunity to stop them and get the ball back.
That decision is where my personal Beaver season ended. Not watching anymore.
Agreed. We should have gone for that one.
that was a close game, very even. Just didn’t take advantage of enough chances. Didn’t have a good 3rd down conversion on defense, settled for too many FG’s when a touchdown maybe wins game. Stanford is a good club, but we should have beat them. Kelly and Isaac were not good today, and Vaz looked like he got rattled. The defense while good at times couldn’t keep them out of the end zone.
Stanford’s offense was good, but the Beavers should have won this game. Shit play calling in the red zone and Cody Vaz having a meltdown were why they lost. Vaz is not a starting QB. He’s the guy you bring in to relieve another QB, but he’s not the guy you expect to win with in huge games.
Ha ha. Maaco bowl here we come.
LOL angry was spot on about that win cap
Defense gave up 254 yards passing to Hogan and over 400 yds total. Beaver offense a paltry 312 yds total offense. Neither Cooks or Wheaton had a 100 yds receiving but I think they were open enough to dominate
I FUCKING HATE STANFORD. I HATE SHAW, I HATE HOGAN, AND I HATE EVERYONE THEY’VE EVER MET, AND I HOPE THEY ALL DIE. FUCK.
Please just declare Mannion the starter for the next 2 years regardless of quality of play and go back to the days where a qb in the Riley system had time to take his lumps and develop into a good qb. It’s the fans job to bitch and moan and say “Put in Mannion!” when Vaz is doing bad and “Put in Vaz!” when Mannion is doing bad. It’s the coaches job to not act like fans and stick with somebody because coaches are supposed to know that that is how they improve. But our coaching staff has really just been an extension of the student section the last few years and this year is no different. Fuck Riley. Fuck OSU football
I save that sentiment for the ducks!
Fucking Riley thought he had this game won after that field goal put us up by nine. Play calling went to complete shit after that. Something like six total run plays with a two possession lead in the second half, are you fucking kidding me? Yea Stanford has a great run D but we were getting yards with Woods.
Fuck this crap. I like how our guys fought back after that putrid 1st quarter but now I wish we would have thrown the towel in and got blown out so I could have turned it off to go do something productive.
I should have known seeing Riley doing cartwheels after that last field goal that we were doomed. I thought after the Udub game I had learned my lesson about Riley. He’s a bad addiction, I keep trying to quit but every Saturday I keep coming back to get my heart stabbed.
Nicholls State back on so program can shoot for 9 win season…
FUCK. Even with this winning season I am at a disinterest with the Beavers.
Vaz injury, regardless of severity, will make easy decision to put Mannion back in, see if he can find early season mojo against Cal.
Yes, that mojo will be key to ensuring we beat cal and Nicholls st and play in the MAACO eat shit bowl. The bottom line is we were going to beat cal and Nicholls st and lose to Oregon regardless of qb. The game where we needed the best qb to play was THIS one. THIS game was the game of the season. This was the game that decided whether we go to the Rose bowl or not. Yeah sure Mannion needs to start, but what does it matter? The seasons pretty much over now. Too little, too late.
Literally the only thing that can salvage this season is an impossible win over the Ducks.
Why not just throw Hawaii on the schedule around Christmas to get that 14 game schedule so BDC and Riley can prance around saying they have a 10 win season.
Going to a Rose Bowl in my lifetime may be out of the question. Even if Stanford and us beat Oregon, Stanford still owns the tie-breaker so I don’t see a scenario for us to get to Pasadena.
I know that I should not be discouraged by our record this year, but it seems like the devil is playing jokes on us by giving us so much hope then pulling the rug out from underneath us. Maybe will still go to the Alamo or Holiday bowls, just not the ugly Sun bowl.
Mannion now is the starter!
It’s normally a cop-out and oversimplification, but this game is all on the QB.
RBs played great, run blocking solid (esp. against this front 7).
Receivers played great with the crap they were given. Many many balls thrown way off, and the receivers fell all over themselves to come up with it. At least two throws are probably TDs instead of modest gains with a decent pass.
Pass protection not the best, but decent. More than good enough to win.
And the coaches pissed away our best chance to win by punting on 4th & 2. Crazy call.
And, on the Stanford side, the QB was the difference in a positive way.
Vaz was a spaz.
I can see it now, Mannion gets knocked out of the Civil War early in the first quarter and Angry’s boy Harrington comes in and shreds the Ducks for an OSU victory. And we still end up in the Sun Bowl.
Hell, a miraculous win would not surprise me at all. There’s no expectation to actually win the game. Nobody thinks they can do it, that’s when he pulls off big wins. But when you expect the Beavers to win a big game, Riley does not get it done. I’m tired of his shit.
Prototypical Riley game right there.
Have some thoughts I’ll write down later tonight.
Hip Hip!
In n Out must be pissed.
FWIW, the Vegas line nailed the final score.
Yeah I called 27-22 yesterday, but didn’t know who would win, but was leaning Stanford. What a shame, very close though. A play here or there.
Also, the announcers several times referred to “Danny Langsdorf’s playcalling.” Usually derogatory. Anyone know who’s actually calling plays this year?
I place very little credence in what national announcers say when discussing nut and bolts, just me.
Well guys with Alabama likely to lose, looks like Oregon will end up destroying K State in the title game.
And Chip can ride off into the sunset leaving all the sanctions behind.
I love that people are coming out of the woodwork to blame Vaz. Midweek he was God of all and Mannion was satan. Jack seems to be the only one to nail the analysis.
Yep. Gave credit to him in an earlier comment. Jokes on us. It’s just too bad we had to blow our rose bowl season to find out
I’ve said all along I wanted Mannion back if he’s 100%.
Although a 75% Mannion may have been an improvement in the 2nd half.
I’ve been saying for some time that Mannion is better, just was not healthy. When you aren’t healthy, you tend to look like crap. I didn’t think Vaz would look this badly in the 2nd half, but there’s a reason Mannion is the starter. Never got on the Vaz is amazing bandwagon. I’m a huge Sean Mannion fan, saw a lot of people saying Vaz is better and saying some thought Mannion is the “Golden Boy”. Nope, just a big time QB.
I really didn’t think Vaz was better than Mannion but I did want to see Cody succeed. Seems like a good kid and got caught up in story. I just thought that the NEXT series he would come out and throw the ball. My bad.
I really wanted Cody to do well also. But his numbers didn’t portend a good future. I was so hoping he would break the pattern.
Looks like my 9 win prediction was a little optomistic.
Vaz looked horrible in the 2nd half. Here’s hoping Mannion is actually ready.
we will still win 9 games. Cal is horrible and Nicholls St? Please. 9-3 and Holiday or Alamo bowl.
One shot left. Stanford needs to lose next week and we need to win out. From last years civil war to this the Beavers have had zero chance to win. Need to step up to glory or slide into obscurity. Maybe Vaz should have started UW and Mannion @ Stanford. Who knows. Now instead of double doubles the Beavers are eating mystery meat sandwiches at the hotel.
Vaz had 1 good game. He won’t win games for you, but he won’t lose them with interceptions (prefers fumbles). He’s Trent dilfer. Perfect for LSU or Alabama. OSU needs a gunslinger in a system where 1-2 losses ends your dreams.
So easy to put the blame on Vaz, undeserved I think. Did he make mistakes? Yes. So did others. Kelly’s blown assignment at the end of the first half cost us a wide open Cummings. His false start put us in much longer situation, then Wheaton dropped a first down catch with help from the defender. Cooks dropped a touchdown pass that Vaz put right in his hands in the end zone, we settled for three. Isaac had at least five bad snaps that threw the timing of plays off or didn’t pick up the rushers. By far Isaac’s worst game, but he is not 100%.
Hogan was 22-29, and he and Taylor made one of the best plays of the year on their touchdown that if we stop them there we hold them to a field goal.
We were running the ball effectively, but stopped running in the second half which put more pressure on Vaz, who didn’t handle the pressure. We had chances, going back to our first drive after a turnover in Stanford terriority and we went 3 and out gained just two yards, punted.
There is alot of blame it is not on one guy. The team showed guts and courage to fight back just didn’t make enough plays to win.
You must’ve watched a different game. That Cooks drop was a poor throw (but a great play by Cooks to even get his hands on it). Those “drops” were all the result of poor placement on the pass. Both Cook and Wheaton each had a catch that they had to bobble because the pass was so far off target. Without Cooks and Wheaton, Vaz likely would’ve had multiple picks. You didn’t even include the pick that he threw but somehow a Stanford player knocked it out of his teammates hands.
Oh, had Stanford kicked a field goal instead of scoring a TD they still would’ve won. That TD pass is kind of moot.
Don’t disagree. But if you’re going to be a top 10 team you need your QB to perform. 3rd down conversions, Beavs 3-13 and Tree 7-12
3rd down conversions in games Vaz started:
BYU: 2-11
Utah: 2-11
Arizona St: 3-15
Stanford: 3-13
Ouch.
Double ouch, didn’t think it was that bad
The announcers in the ‘Bama game are so biased. That was a clear INT. Toe was down.
?@Stephen__Nelson
Cody Vaz was on crutches after the game. Said all x-rays on ankle were negative. #GoBeavs
Sure looked like a knee issue to me on that replay.
They forgot to check the knee.
Surprised how many people are blaming that loss on Vaz. The Dilfer comment seems more accurate than blaming the loss on him. He played okay, missed like 4 easy throws and had 1 turnover. Most QBs probably do that in that game.
Mannion has a 1:1 TD/INT ratio and single-handedly lost the UW game (with the help of Riley), yet suddenly he is the savior. That game was the turning point, not this one. That’s why I was so upset after that game. This one was easier to swallow and saw it coming.
Just weird people are blaming Vaz.
Except that most of his throws were just off enough so that the receivers didn’t have a chance to make the big play.
Yeah I saw that, but I saw Mannion do that, too (especially in the red zone) and worse, throw INTs. I think this is improper backlash. The guy played okay against a statistically tough D (i wasn’t too impressed), yet people are ripping him more than Mannion vs UW. The players all wanted Vaz…that’s the word on the street.
I actually still like Vaz better (not long-term, but this season), but I’m fine with Mannion if he plays here on out. I guess my point is that QB play isn’t really the problem.
Let me guess, the problem is . . . wait for it. No, I won’t spoil it. Glad to see Angry back and posting on the heels of a Beaver loss.
Exactly. The receivers made him look a lot better than he was today.
Also, the fumble on the 30 was a back-breaker.
Running the ball more would have helped. That being said, Vaz was clearly the offensive weak link today.
Both QBs have offered up some shit this season, but Vaz is a big part of that loss. Receivers were open in situations where we needed them to be and Vaz flat out could not make the throws. Plentyvof first down yardage blwn in the fourth. His small man batted passes have been annoying but not back breaking, but his unforced small hand fumbles the last two games have been unforgivable. Mannion is certainly not perfect but there should be no question Vaz goes after today, hurt or not. I fully understand the decision to use him, but that experiment needs to end.
Erin looks much better in a skirt. Too bow-legged.
I’ve seen her in person……………..great ass!
I’m starting to think no Pac-12 team will get the Rose Bowl this year. They can take teams from another conference if there isn’t a P-12 team in the top 14, correct?
Stanford will lose to Oregon and drop out, USC will lose the title game…not sure how much the Beavs could jump if they were to beat Oregon. Probably not high enough. I guess Stanford has the best shot now since they might not drop too much losing to Oregon.
BTW, ‘Bama loses. Ducks will get their first National Championship. Might as well get this over with as it’s going to happen sooner or later.
Not sure about that. K-State-ND has a good chance of happening
I don’t think ND makes it past USC.
Stanford could easily lose at UCLA and have 4 losses. They will have the tie break on us unless we somehow could beat the Ducks. Riley will take an entire career to MAYBE win one meaningful game that gets them at the BCS/Playoff level. The money is better spent saying we will continue to come up just short and always peak at the higher end of bowls that don’t mean much. Opportunity pissed away. Had Vaz not fumbled it would have been a great finish but OSU would have had the edge and a good shot to hold on for the Rose Bowl. Then there is the stupidity of lining up in shotgun on 2nd and 1, where it should have been a quick handoff for Ward to secure the first down and make Stanford nervous and our guys believing. Instead a false start and it all goes downhill quickly. You would think over 5 times the coaching experience would allow Riley to win one Big game. Nope.
K State have any chance against UO?
No, their defense won’t get a single stop.
Oregon’s D will probably get two stops.
Yes. Bill Snyder is the best coach in the country. Collin Klein is a great talent. K-State plays solid defense and would get a month to prepare. K-State is under the radar, somehow.
So Texas A&M would win the super bowl?
I don’t know what to think. Following Beaver football is like riding a roller coaster, up one time down another. Same old 12 year shit. What a golden opportunity we had being 6 – 0. But what we forgot was Riley got his toilet bowl, a year extension, so who gives a rats ass. All Riley wants to do is be able to retire at OSU. A Rose Bowl was in our sights and gone in a flash. What a shame but I should not have expected more out of Riley as leader. It’s not our team or players with fault. They have shown their great talent on the field. Its how they are prepared for games, play calling and a coach doing what it takes to win.
Yeah Vaz showed his exquisite talent there at the end.
OT, where are the many prognosticators who pontificated about the upcoming doom of Missouri and Texas A&M? How they had no idea what they were getting themselves into by exposing themselves to the infamous SEC grind? How they would spend years in the cellar before they could have a chance to emerge?
The fact that A&M has been able to do so much damage so early makes you wonder about the real talent level in the SEC. No doubt they have good players but I always found it difficult to believe that they were far and away better than any other conference.
SEC has the talent on the lines, but the skill positions are a different story. A&M and Mizzou brought big time talent at QB and the skill position. Mizzou would be 7-3 right now if not for their QB being in such bad shape with injuries and the O-Line being hurt.
Don’t forget the SEC also wimps put and plays only eight conference games a year.
I really hate sports sometimes.
I always appreciate angry’s pre-game analysis and found this week to be ironic. Angry says, ” I think they’ll (Tree) shut down the run game … and that’ll lead to trouble in the passing game.”
Ironic thing is the run game was shut down by, yes, Riley. And, while it may not have “lead” to trouble in the passing game it certainly put more pressure on the pass and exposed weaknesses.
I can’t whine enough about this… and I agree.
Btw, Leach Era in Wazzu feels like it might be ending sooner than expected http://www.cougcenter.com/2012/11/10/3629216/marquess-wilson-letter-wsu-football-mike-leach
Marquess Wilson sounds like a spoiled little brat.
Leach has proven himself a prick. Wilson has had enough.
I wouldn’t write Leach off so soon. I was never one who wanted him in Corvallis for whatever reason. But that was because I just thought he was Riley… only weird. I believe any push-back he’s getting from the players at Wazzu is because THEY ARE A BUNCH OF FUCK-UPS.
I don’t know how the hell Ken Bone keeps his job. He must have photos of someone somewhere.
Pullman has been fast and loose for a while. They need to correct themselves fast. i don’t think Leach is doing it fast enough.
The age old question. Why do MR’s teams start slow? If they came out of the gate with any fire, we
might be calling travel agents and not the suicide help line. WTF is Storm out of the lineup in the fourth?
Does the team do a face-plant next week now that the Rose is toast?
Lighten up people. What happened should have been expected.
It’s hoops season! And we’re making treys for once!
OT… if you hadn’t heard already…
http://www.latimes.com/sports/college/basketball/la-sp-1110-ucla-indiana-state-20121110,0,1440434.story
I know, still can’t believe Indiana State scored 59 on the bruins.
OT…it’s a cultural field trip…
