I was wondering, if we beat the holes and Stanford beats UCLA twice would we be # 2 in PAC12. Would 10-2 be good enough for a BCS bowl? If we click on all cylinders next week we certainly have a chance. I was just hoping it would be the Beavers to knock the Ducks out. But it would be nice to put the Ducks down to # 3 or 4.
Well, if we beat the ducks Then Stanford to P12 game vs UCLA. Beavs would be tie breaker #2. So yes, ducks would be 4th. Beavs win, and Ducks go to Sun Bowl! This is a major civil war, but Rose bowl is still on the table for ducks mathematically. Depending on how the chips fall, there could still be a pac12 at-large-bcs game (which may be a better matchup than Wisconsin)

Been saying it for a couple weeks and now I’m shouting it, Terron Ward should be our starter. He hits the hole quicker, covers the ball up, and runs with anger. I like both Woods and Agnew, but Ward should be our #1.

Kleenex are in short supply in Eugene today. Great Beaver game but not up against same caliber team next week. Can Riley be aggressive the whole game? Can offense stay on the field and score 7 against the ucks? If not, our defense will tire and we would be screwed. The offense has to make solid drives to keep our defense rested. Once you get ahead the ucks feathers get ruffled and they mentally fall apart. They are at our house, lets win this one.
We have to be able to run the ball on the ucks to win. Our defense is good… Poyer was a beast last night! The ucks haven’t faced a good defense since Stanford (you get my point – held them to 14 pts). We put up 23 points on the #1 defense (Stanford). We beat Cal way more soundly then the ucks did. Our guys are hungry with something to prove, ucks are depressed and on their heels. We can win…. WE CAN WIN BABY!

Mannion played with alot of fire last night and looked good. The gamplan was on all night and the running game was never forgotten. I even loved the way Riley was talking about aggressiveness during his interview before halftime. Riley was talking about all the exposure OSU is getting through the Pac-12 Networks before the game and recruits telling him they have been watching us play and I think he is doing a better job of realizing that people are watching and making lasting impressions matters. It also looked like the whole team cared about getting the very best bowl possible. We have a strong chance for the Alamo Bowl now and probably would get the Fiesta with a win over Oregon.

I’m checking bowl projections and trying to be realistic about the BCS improbability for the Beavs. Does the Holiday Bowl against West Virginia excite anyone? That’s assuming WVU beats Iowa St and Kansas. Might be interesting to see how the Beavs do against Geno Smith.

Looking at the UO box score is impressive. Mariotta has 12 rushes for 89 yards with a long of 77. Obviously well contained on the other 11. Barner held to 3.1 ypc, DAT about 6.
I don’t expect Banker to do as well next week with his defense. Also, UO should have a lot left to play for given all of the 1 loss teams out there.

I just don’t get the weak throws. He needs to work on his core strength and arm this offseason. The potential INTs are bothersome obviously, but with Woods/Ward providing balance, I think Mannion gives OSU the best chance. I don’t think Vaz sees the field as well, and remember UO batting down 8-9 passes against OSU not too long ago. Yes, there are successful qb’s as tall, or short, as Vaz, but I think Vaz has trouble seeing the field at this level, and he commonly throws ugly passes too.
The funny thing is he could have had 0 picks too because his one pick was not a bad throw.

Next year I expect we’ll see the Hamlett/Smith show at TE, and I like that combo. We’ll really miss Wheaton, but I expect the offense to be significantly improved nonetheless.

The answer is obvious, but I’m seeing praise for Mannion, for example, Cliff gave him an A, but there were plenty of poor throws last night and 2 ints (if not 3) that were dropped. If the Beavs defense comes out like it did in the first quarter last night against the Ducks, and Mannion makes that many bad throws, Beavs will be in a big hole at halftime.

Oregon averaged something like 3 yards a carry on 39 runs against Stanford (omitting Mariota’s 77 yard run in the first quarter). I was at Reser last night, and didn’t tape the Ducks game, so I have no clue how Stanford managed to shut down the Ducks’ offense.
Mariota said after the game that Stanford “showed some different fronts and then were dropping out of it…That didn’t leave too many holes.” Was that it? Was Stanford doing other things that flummoxed Kelly and the Ducks? Has Stanford shown the world — finally — how to stop the Ducks’ running attack? Can Oregon State use the Stanford game plan as a blueprint for the Civil War, and have a reasonable chance of stopping the Duck offense?
Ducks did the same thing that OSU did. They stopped running right at Stanford and tried to pick and cutesy the edges. They run right at them, and they get 8,9,12 yards. They run/pass to the edges, and they get 3 on a great effort.
So Stanford was not doing anything new and different — in terms of schemes or techniques or personnel — to stymie the Duck running attack? It was just bad play calling by Chip Kelly?
What Stanford did the best was tackle in space. They missed a couple but they really did tackle well and played disciplined defese.
Agree, I saw numerous 1:1 tackles where the Stanford player did a textbook job of wrapping up.
Other than that the ability of Stanford to disrupt things in the backfield and bring down the ball carrier at -1 to +2 yds seemed key to me.
I don’t know so much about the play calls themselves since it’s all option. Mariota looked confused quite a bit. But what he didn’t trust were the calls that produced. He chose lower percentage plays that usually work against other teams. So it wouldn’t be so much the play-calling as much as it was just poor preparation for what Stanford does.
It also looked like Stanford was forcing the QB to keep the ball on his reads by keying on Barner when he was in. They were fine with Mariota beating them, but they weren’t going to let Barner run free.
I wonder whether Marky B will be looking at what Cal did for a half and Stanford did for two halves to stop UO?

Is there ANY benefit to playing the Nicholls State game? Does the extra win help in a bowl placement? I see some of the SEC teams playing fluff this past weekend and its just kind of amazes me that they’re doing it this late in the season.
I don’t think 9-3 is better than 8-3 (assuming CW loss). Particularly an 8-3 that has no fluff on the schedule – Wiscy and BYU as out-of-conference is respectable. OSU had a strange start to the season with an early bye, and hasn’t had a break since. I think the thing to do would be to cancel Nicholls State game this week, and then let the players rest and prep for whatever bowl game awaits. I understand it would cost OSU $400K, but that seems better than playing a pointless game and risking any injuries.
Plus, it would remove the risk of OSU looking past UO to Nicholls State….

If the Beavs beat the Ducks there is some notice nationally for going into a bowl game with ten wins and then eleven gets you a pretty nice season ending ranking if they win a bowl game Nicholls is a really bad team even by FCS standards some hopefully the starters are done by halftime, but I get your point, it is a “pointless” game now. I think it was kept on the schedule as a Riley “security blanket” to get to 6-6 and a bowl game originally. It no longer has a purpose except maybe to beautify the W/L record.
I have to think it is very important to national perception. A 9 win season is better than an 8 win season. I think folks will just look at the win total and not notice the loss number. Who the hell is going to know we played no fluff? Almost no one.
I don’t know what the practice restrictions after regular season are, but I have heard others make the case the game will get us an extra week of practice. Which is always welcome, and one of the benefits of bowl eligibility.
I know the writing on College Football News is all over the place, and often error-ridden, but I think the article belowis funny in that, essentially, people act all upset when, dammit, the teams decide on the field who wins, and it doesn’t fit with subjective rankings, predictions, and favoritism. How many teams with great defenses has Oregon beaten since Chip Kelly became head coach? Think it’s zero. Their offense puts up huge #’s against horrible and mediocre defenses, people go crazy and when they finally play a good-great defense the offense looks okay but nothing special anymore.
i’d have to go back and check – I would think there were a few “good” Pac-12 defenses (USC?). But I know Riley has lost to many defenses that aren’t great and sometimes not even good. And when Kelly loses to good to great defenses, the games remain competitive.

USC’s defenses in 2009, 2010 and this year were not god whatsoever.

Outside of the SEC, there aren’t many great college defenses. It’s why Chip’s strategy is so successful. They’ve also scheduled easier non-con games over the past couple years.
Anyone would want 7 losses in 4 years so it’s pointless to criticize Oregon and sounds like sour grapes. If the offense is so gimmicky then stop it. If few can stop it, then it’s a good offense.
Before the season Tim Euhus said the Beavs would win the CW and go 9-3 with all 3 losses on the road. Pretty close so far.
I hope Riley calls all the players and coaches together to watch the Stanford/Oregon game. There’s a lot to learn from what Stanford did and how to stop Oregon. As mentioned, Stanford did some excellent tackling and we have to do the same. Go for the legs, not the body. Wining the CW depends on how Riley prepares his coaches and team for the game.

Stanford just brought physicality and penetration. Mariotta danced to buy more time and Stanford’s secondary held solid. They didn’t have an opporunity to hold due to the penetration. They ran the ball well and Hogan is a huge improvement over Nunes.
Not sure on the QB for the civil war. Mannion put up some nice numbers but made a few bad decisions that should have been picks and had some of those flutter balls. Vaz is going to get some balls knocked down and doesn’t got through his progressions as quickly, but is much more mobile. Comparing Vaz at Stanford’s d and Mannion against Cal isn’t really fair. Its really a tough call.
Vaz has thrown a lot of questionable passes, he just got even more lucky on his throws. Give me a QB who can consistently hit open receivers over a QB who throws constantly behind receivers any day. Also, Mannion protects the ball when he feels he’s going to be sacked, Vaz holds the ball like a loaf of bread. I’ll take a slower, more accurate QB with better pocket presence over the more mobile, sometimes erratic QB who doesn’t protect the football under pressure. Mannion is the far superior QB.

Neither QB can manage anything more than a brisk walk. Neither has EVER scrambled as far as I can remember.
However, one of Mannion’s best strengths (pocket presence and the ability to sidestep blitzers) is one of Vaz’s big weaknesses.
And why is it, that we cant recruit a pocket style, passing qb, who can ALSO run??

If you look back, they both had games where they kept drives alive with their legs,only to have Riley clamp down on them and force them to stay in the pocket and take sacks.
Luck and now Hogan are perfect examples of athletic QBs in pro style offense. They don’t run spread offense but there are designed QB runs and it’s understood that if the play breaks down and the run is there they take it.
I doubt Riley will ever make that adjustment regardless of who he has at QB.

Makes sense as one of the easier plans to implement. Swap North Carolina and Georgia Tech as reports say B1G also interested in GT. Plus that makes your Big 16 (ACC merger) conference stronger and it gets to have NC more administratively important which they would like and they stick with Duke. Agree that 64 teams in four 16 team conferences is best way to set up the ideal structure for a college super league.
Agreed that there are some obvious downsides to playing the Nicholls State game on December 1. But I think there are upsides, too. The most obvious upside is the guaranteed “W” that makes the team and the program look better on paper to pollsters, to recruits, and to alumni.
But more important, I think, is the opportunity to get game time experience for many younger players who need it (and to give the OSU coaches a chance to evaluate those younger players in a real game). I’m thinking of guys on defense such as Brandon Bennett-Jackson (RS FR DT), Jaswha James (RS FR LB), and Shaydon Akuna (SO LB). On offense, I’d like to get a chance to watch Gavin Andrews (FR OT), Caleb Smith (FR TE), Richard Mullaney (RS FR WR) and, of course, for Richie Harrington (RS FR QB).
We should be able to get all of these guys — and others — substantial game experience against Nicholls State without jeopardizing the outcome. I think that could prove quite valuable next season.
That game is a must, for the simple reason it elevates our season record. One more win.

That said, I also think it was nonsense to let NS off the hook for playing it as scheduled.
Also there is a huge financial cost to buying out of the game so it would be a huge gamble to cancel purely for strenght of schedule reasons. Going to a bowl game has the effect of lenghting out the practice time in a season and getting the younger guys playing time and practice time is big for player development.
Of course as a fan it has less interest than the spring game, but I hope it is a good chance for familes that haven’t been able to go the solid out games, to go and enjoy some beaver football. Maybe BDC can get some deals out there for the game. Get some local HS and expand the brand.
It also adds another possible recruiting weekend. We don’t do a lot of visits early in the season.

Great fan experience game, with the duck loss announcement (“merry Xmas beaver fans!”), Yvenson proposing to his gf on the field, a blowout win, Koets coming back to be honored on-field, and the introduction of several Beavers in the military both young and old really made every game break enjoyable.

Don’t forget, last week Tennessee got hit with an extension of their probation, because of payments they made to none other than Will Lyles a few years back, as reimbursement for his travel and hotel expenses while on recruiting trips with Lache Seastrunk. Lyles was classified as a booster because of his role in arranging the trip.
If Lyles was a booster for Tennessee in this situation, he has to be considered a booster in the Oregon situation, for helping set up recruiting trips to Oregon. (Chip Kelly even sent thank you cards to him for setting up the future trip as well as past ones)

News out of Berkeley is that Tedford is gone. Boosters haven’t necessarily ponied up the money to buy him out. But the promised funds which would be withheld if he remained would be about five times as costly. Cal team will meet in about 15 minutes to get the news.

Giving Embree another year is so stupid of Colorado. They are ranked dead last in the FBS in scoring offense and scoring defense. You don’t “figure it out” with that guy. La Tech’s Sonny Dykes would be good for Colorado or Utah St.’s Gary Anderson. It will be funny if Tedford has to work under a guy who has zero business as a Div 1 head coach, and was only ever a TE coach before and is worst out of 120+ FBS teams. Tedford probably thinks he has a shot at the HC job in 1 year and that the odds may work out for him. Colorado’s situation will remain lousy if Embree is around. He is that bad.

Talked to a couple Cal boosters before the game. They recognized what a great job Tedford has done for their program, and the NFL players he has recruited. They felt that the buyout although doable would not help the program as they wouldn’t have the resources to go after somebody of higher quality. However, they mentioned that Tedford has slipped in the discipline area (see 15 penalties for 170+ yards.

This was the first Beaver game I have seen in awhile. I have criticized Mannion before but he did play well. The first interception though was his. He rifled a ten yarder with the wind way too hard. I think he was trying to make an adjustment on that throw after underthrowing Wheaton on the first play from scrimmage. In the third quater, Mannion was purposefully throwing it away when he had no play. I loved it but the fans around me were grousing. I am a bit worried about the defensive line splits. Against the Ducks, the wide de splits will not work. Cal almost popped it several times early when the game was fairly close. Against Oregon, the defensive line has to occupy all five offensive linemen and let the linebackers clean up. In the front set against Cal, the Beavers were conceding the off tackle lead. Dylan is great at following the play down the line and plays really hard. Unfortunately his wide split is a Duck wet dream.
I like the Beavers speed on defense. They can be in position but they have to make the tackle when they get there.

All of these people are in the club level lounge at Reser. You can see the Beaver game going on live outside the windows in the background. All of these Beav fans were watching Oregon lose rather than OSU winning.
At the game the loudest the crowd got was after the announcement that Stanford won. I thought that this was a perfect display of our fan base’s loser mentality.
I personally enjoyed that the Stanford won but I am not going to cheer and yell about it and I especially am not going to make an effort to watch Oregon’s game while I am attending the Beaver game.
The loudest cheer should’ve been for Wards determined, 47-yard td run. I like the way he is running, and that he’s doing it at this time of year. I expect him to be running like an angrybeaver on Saturday.

I am disappointed that the majority of the fans at the game cheered as loud or louder for the announcement that the Ducks lost than at any other point in the game.
I would not be watching the overtime kick, I would be watching Brandon Cooks score a touchdown at the game I was attending. This wasn’t before the Beaver game or at halftime or one of the many TV timeouts, it was in the middle of a play.
I am part of the Beaver fan base just as you and everyone else on this site is, that doesn’t necessarily mean we all have a loser mentality or any other trait that the group has as a whole.
I think part of the reason the cheering that uo lost was so loud was because of Cook’s TD. I had no clue what was going on during the duck game, other then what the stadium PA announcer had said earlier, that it was in OT. As I was jumping up and down and screaming about Cook’s TD, I noticed the score flashing on the tickerboard, which kept my excitment going.
Those fans watching inside, yeah that is total BS! I hate the ducks, and love to watch them lose. I am not going to miss a second of OS action to watch a duck game though.
The fact that both those plays happened together IMO is what caused the cheering to be so loud. First Cooks scored and then the score started to get scene. It was a chain reaction of emotions…
Sorry I need to clarify. There was a small cheer mid-play before Mannion threw the ball to Cooks. In my original post I was referring to the loudest cheers after the PA announcer gave the Oregon score and then said “Merry Christmas”.

Come on JD. As a fan base, I don’t think we can cheer loud enough for Duck losses. These are truly awful people – we all know one (or in some cases are surrounded by them), and to know one is to know the worst the human soul has to offer. To express unadulterated glee when these disease-riddled NikeZombies die a painful death, and experience what’s left of their blackened hearts break, should be the natural reaction for any good Beaver fan. Some interesting scenarios for UCLA. They basically have the choice of who they want to play in the PAC12 Championship game. If they lose to Stanford, they play Stanford again. Doesn’t matter what happens in the civil war bc Stanford owns the tiebreaker. If UCLA wins, they may get a trip to Eugene. The outcome of the civil war should be decided by kickoff of the UCLA/Stanford game so we’ll see what Mora does.
I have to think Mora will pull his starters after the first quarter and just play vanilla the rest of the game. Get a lot of backups some significant playing time. Treat it as a NFL preseason game.
You play to win in that situation. The better overall record will help them more, and you don’t want to show weakness to your opponent. It would be bad for morale too. I don’t see UCLA taking the game off, unless it’s a blowout early.
In life, when you try to lose you keep losing. UCLA gets it in their head that losing the first game to Stanford is their best path to the RB, and they end up losing two games and playing in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Mora is trying to build a program and is not just looking at gamesmenship. The previous UCLA culture allowed the team coast at times. Turning things off after the first quarter would be a return to the past and really does not fit the personality of Mora. UCLA is peaking right now. They would be foolish to play it like an NFL preseason game, or an NFL game right before the playoffs.
PS-Beavers should study what UCLA has done on special teams. If you watched UCLA/USC, you would notice that even though most UCLA kickoffs went thru the endzone, UCLA had 5-6 guys run hard downfield into the endzone. I do not recall seeing that Saturday night. UCLA also has an impressive number of kick blocks. Beaver pressure on punts and exta points/field goals is ok, but nothing to write home about.

I think you have a point. Decide who you have a better shot at beating in the title game, and play it that way. Going to the Rose Bowl, for UCLA, would be HUGE. Certainly bigger than one more win on your record.
Then again, I think this UCLA team is out to show it isnt the team that backed into the title game last year, and lost to UO. They took it to USC, and might well want the opportunity to show they can do it to UO.

Some observations from the game,
– Cal basically gave up mid way through the 2nd quarter. The rain really seemed to bother them.
– Cooks continues to be ridiculous. Hopefully he’s ready for civil war.
– Mannion was not throwing great balls, just good enough. The ball to cooks would have been incomplete or picked but the wind really knocked the ball down and Cooks is great at adjusting the the ball.
– The refs had some kind of grudge against Cal. Just an insane amount of penalties.
– Woods should still be the starter at RB with Ward backing him up. Woods appears to still have conditioning issues. Ward has proven that he is a capable backup.
– Wards run was a lot to do with Cal’s just inabilty to tackle and Ward just knew to keep his legs driving. A couple guys missed Ward twice.
Rumors on Tedford are that he was out the door until he suggested a contract rewrite to dump the buyout if given another year to do better.
These are rumors. I’m still hearing that a couple big time boosters are just demanding Cal strike now while they think they can get a couple certain coaches.

Duck loss to Stanford doesn’t help Beavs. Chip Kelly is at his best, or worse depending on your point of view, when he is on a mission. After the 2007 3OT loss to the Beavs, they retooled and swamped South Florida, with a fourth string QB.
Beavs are ultimately an upper- middle rung PAC-12 team that the Ducks have been feasting on this year. They will chase an even more immobile Mannion all over the backfield.

You don’t think OSU is pretty comparable to Stanford? Or is Stanford another upper-middle run PAC-12 team that the Ducks forgot to feast on? I think OSU with a healthy, accurate Mannion has more offensive firepower than Stanford, and the D is a little weaker. Not sure if one will be enough to make up for the other.

The duck loss helps us hugely. It shows UO can be beaten, and were beat by a team we could have beat with a couple breaks going our way. Confidence is big.
Kelley has always, every game, been on a mission. At some point I think the players cant keep up the “this game is the next one in the season long playoff”, and lose focus.
I also think, from the UO BCS ongoing status, that they now have a sufficient rep that other teams dont really practice or scheme to beat them, and so the ducks run right thru them. It also may be that the ducks are mostly a big play offense, as they seem to get a lot of points from the occasional big play. Contain those big plays and you have a shot at them. Mariota got off one 77 yd run, but didnt get in the endzone, and in fact, the ducks got no points out of it.
Kelley gets an NFL gig by raising the level of a school’s football status just on (apparently) the strength of his coaching, just as Riley did back in the day. Riley had no Rose Bowl, but still got a pro gig.
I agree. I am under no illusions that the Ducks will be hungover for the civil war and I expect they give us their best shot, but the loss is huge for the Beavs’ psyche. A drubbing of Cal and a loss to Stanford, who we lost a heartbreaker to on the road. Big for the Beavs’ confidence. That doesn’t mean we have the horses to win this game, but I think it is set up about as good as we could hope for.

2 teams at most can come from one conference. I haven’t seen any of the talking heads saying anything but I got to think a 10-2 OSU team would be attractive to the Fiesta Bowl or some other bowl. Then again a 10-2 UofO team might be a bigger money draw.
How does 10-2 UofO get picked ahead of 10-2 OSU with tiebreaker? Is it at the Bowl committee’s discretion to pick based on which one with travel better? Gotta think OSU would travel just as well, especially with half of Oregon fans stuck with flight and hotel reservations to Miami, haha
once all the AQ’s have been placed in bowl games then the bowls take turns choosing from the top 14 teams. OSU might be a better draw though because we haven’t been to a BCS game in forever and we started out the year thinking just get to .500 so a lot of fans are pumped where as UofO fans might not want to travel as much having to “settle” for a game that is not the title game. I don’t know what all the bowl committees will look at… just saying it is a possibility. The loser of the P12 title game might get the nod also if they are in the top 14 since they would technically be the “runner up.”

Five of those teams will definitely not play in a BCS bowl. Four of them will be SEC teams, and one will be Pac 12.
If your hypothetical has us beating Nikegon, then either Stanford or UCLA goes to the RB to play either Nebraska or Wisconsin. The losers of those championship games will not be considered for a BCS at-large berth.
There will be three at-large berths. The SEC will get one. Oklahoma will get one if they win out, regardless of the KSU/UT outcome. That leaves one slot more unless KSU loses to UT. That would leave two berths open for bowls to decide between us, Nikegon, UT, KSU and Clemson.

For anyone wanting to know why Shaydon Akuna is not ahead of Robinson should watch the 4th quarter. Akuna gets a decent amount of playing time at outside LB. Did not make one play. Not even an assist on a tackle.
He looks like he’s running with heavy feet. Not much explosiveness. Looks like he could drop maybe 20.
I really thought he was going to be a big time player. Most of the time I forget he’s even on the team.
OLB is a huge recruiting need. Sorry to hear about Akuna. Bulk him up for DE?
Could be a mental thing. Everyone talked about how great of an athlete he was when we recruited him, but if he can’t read the game at this level, slow decision-making will make him LOOK slow.
