5pm start.
I guess we'll get to see once more what is wrong with Oregon State hoops. The comments in that thread were interesting. Everything from fire CR to blaming injuries. I'm somewhere in between. I expected this year to be worse than last, but I don't think Angus Brandt was a huge piece who's injury should derail the entire season. Also, I see the fundamental issues, like not giving effort on defense (what happened to those 5am practices?) or not making adjustments, and blame those on the coach.
Anyway, I expect Arizona to win by 25.
Imo the best thing the team has going for it is the AZ players will think that all they have to do is show up in order to win.
Unfortunately they’re probably right.
I say we lose by 18 or 19. Won’t be very exciting as OSU will be down more than 10 for almost all the game after the first 7 minutes. Gill normally might have a pretty crowd for Arizona but CR has not inspired Beaver Nation with any guts or gusto this year. Wish the football recruits in attendance had a better product to watch. Just show them all the rebranding designs and have some players host an off campus party for them instead of the game. Have the cheerleders go to the party instead of the game. Bring in the B team cheerleaders for what will again be another in a long list of losses for this OSU squad who plays a very poor brand of basketball very genetically similar to Dixon ratball.
Might as well just talk about recruits instead of basketball. Quite a list of guys coming in for official visits. Most are solid 3 stars in all recruiting services rankings.
1. Edward Williams -TA&M commit. Not too often we this kind of recruiting battle. He must be seriously considering OSU if he’s visiting. Film looks good.
2. Charlie Tua’au – a JC defensive end committed to Hawaii. Saw some old film. Would provide depth.
3. Corey Lawrence – ATH from Oklahoma.
4. Keishawn Bierria – This guy would be a must have guy. He would be a great MLB. High 3 star.
5. Michael Greer – I think he’s related to DJ.
6. Faleaoga Russell – A JC offensive guard. Huge size. No offer.
Remember Williams was the kid whose YouTube vid had something like “future Oregon State Beaver” in the title when we first saw it.
I don’t see any value in us getting JC O-linemen… if they even make it on campus. Just lock up Kearsley please.
I like Bierria. Isn’t Greer already committed?
Mattison and Ofa Hautau are also scheduled.
williams is related to noland
ofa’s coming in march.
You can also add hoops recruits Gabe York (AZ recruit) and Drew Mellon.
York and Mellon are on the AZ team. Are you thinking of someone else?
They might want to find a big screen tv and watch football. I’m afraid we’ll lose all recruits if they go to the men’s bb game – maybe 1,000 in attendance?
Is it true than you can get into tonight’s game by donating a can of food? I think a can of twelve year old Campbell soup may be worth more. JB
2001 Chicken Gumbo is a great vintage.
I think 20-25 is about right. The bottom line is there is talent, but they just need to get better at the fundamentals, work on both transition and offensive sets, and play a lot better defense. I hate to say it but I’ve moved on to baseball. Go Beavs!
If they just tried on D I’d probably watch. I can’t watch guys drive to the hoop over and over uncontested, though. Then when they do miss, bad boxing out, etc. It’s just too frustrating to watch. Those things just require effort, not talent.
I agree Angry but imo if the effort to play defense is not there than the coach should sit your ass down.
I’ll be there witnessing the ass raping in person. not looking forward to it. Cats win by 20+ and it will be decided by halftime.
anyone have a link?
its on ESPNU. I decided to stay home and watch football instead
same old, same old – firstrow.eu
George Dohrmann is tweeting about the game. He does not like CR and Starks.
Not presuming the great minds thing, but I, too, wondered why CR pulled Roberto after he made 2 free throws a while back.
Besides this team having a shitty coach, some players you would think would step up and improve(Nelson Burton) are not getting it done.
What’s the score?
Down 70 – 59 with 6:30 to go
Unbelievable how badly we play defense!!!!
I’m surprised they kept it sorta close.
Zona played to the beavs level.
we only lose by 10. Chalk up a moral victory in the win column!!!!!!
layups. so many layups.
beaver basketball. Catch the apathy!
I only went to the game tonight because I was invited. The best part was talking to the pretty Jordan Whitley VERY briefly after the game, she had to rush off to work or something.
This is my last game for awhile as it is just not worth the drive from Portland. Arizona is not that good and we have now lost 3 home games. Hopes of the NIT are fading. Other schools make the NIT or even the NCAA a few years after a coaching change. I guess BDC would rather stay in budget than get to a real tourney. CBI live long and prosper!
Arizona not that good? You are aware that loss in Eugene the other night was their first of the year and they have beaten #5 Florida and #17 San Diego St? 15-1 and ranked in the top 5 is pretty damn good. As for hopes of the NIT? Dude those hopes faded when we lost at home to Towson.
A couple considerations. Jared didnt stay….BIG loss. Angus was to be starting post man….also gone. With those two losses we are…… well, still mediocre.
And its clear that CR is no basketball genius or great motivator. But if he continues to pull in talent, we should slowly get better.
But it sure sucks that they couldnt have found some really good coach who would by now have got us to respectibility.
I think next year’s recruits will be pretty good and losing Burton will be a plus as he’s just making more mistakes than he should be as a senior. I am encouraged by Brandt’s noticable recovery and I hear he’s doing really well in rehab. Really pushing to have a shake-up on the staff, but I do believe that CR is doing as best as can be expected with limited resources and a shitty AD. The season went in the toilet after Angus went down and with Moreland out right now, it just got worse. Angus stays healthy, I think they would be 2-1 in conference right now. As for Starks, I really wish they would leave him on the bench as he’s too careless with the ball and has a bad case of “Calvin Haynes syndrome.”
OT, but noticed an interesting comment by a 49ers player about their new QB, Colin Kaepernick: “”He’s that new-style quarterback in the National Football League that can run the read option, that can pull the ball down and run it and take it the distance from anywhere on the field — extremely strong-armed, accurate.”
Riley prides himself on running an old-school “pro-style” offense. Like lots of other people, Riley sees the success this season of young, “new-style” QBs Kaepernick (and RGIII, and Russell Wilson) in NFL systems. MIght this cause Riley to rethink his long-standing preference for immobile Canfield/Mannion pocket-passing QBs?
Sure, multi-threat QBs have shredded Banker’s defenses for years. But I’m guessing that games such as last night’s record-setting performance from Kaepernick against Green Bay will have more of an impact on Riley’s thinking. If I happen to see Riley around Corvallis in the next month or two, that’s what I”m going to ask him…..
Exactly.
We’d need a real OC in order to do that.
The answer is no. He wont do that.
Hell, if we could just get a QB who is fast and not so easily sacked it would be a plus. Why do the pocket qb’s we get have to be plodders?
What’s the story with Westbrook? Is he history?
Yes. He was expelled right before basketball season for drugs.
So he going to be a Duck?
Harbaugh said last night that using the Pistol last night forced the defense to cover more of the field and forced them to react later in the play to keys and tendencies. If part of the OS recruiting shtick is to promise future qbs preparation for NFL, then Mike better get with it because the game has changed.
OSU athletics is not about change and won’t be without an earthquake-like shakeup in the department overall. All the news articles about the SF/GB game reference change at the quarterback position, especially. Why do I think Mike Riley isn’t even aware?
There is no way that Riley overhauls his offense. And it’s a good thing. Why try to teach something that they don’t know.
What he could do is recruit QBs like Russell Wilson, more athletic. He ran pro style all of his college career but was always a threat to run. Only this year was he asked to run read-option.
He needs to pick up ideas from the saints and packers. Formations and mis-matches are what Riley needs to work on. And disguising plays. It seemed like plays got predictable near the end.
that’s a lot of ballyhoo anyway – the qbs might make it to the NFL but they are soon buried in the depth chart b4 they disappear altogether. Derek Anderson was given multiple chances and couldn’t sustain a career in the NFL.
Re the “new style NFL qb”: It seems like that style of play exposes the qb to a greater chance of injury and if he get’s injured what are the chances of having someone on the bench who has the talent to make those sort of plays. Maybe in college, but in the pros???
So I’m unsure as to how wise it is for a team to rely on a qb scrambling like that. Perhaps this is just a passing fad?
But what do I know.
It sure is a more exciting style of offense but the pro style won’t entirely go away either at least for a bit.
NFL systems are slow to change because the talent isn’t in the right places yet. In a few years, more guys who have the athletic talent of RG3 will want to play QB now instead of say WR or DB after seeing RG3, Kaepernick, Wilson, even Luck run all over the place. When the talent starts to come up through the college ranks, then there will be depth for NFL teams to run spread elements exclusively because all the QBs on the roster are able to run it. It’ll be a few years before we see that though.
It causes an interesting quandary. To run this offense, your QB’s almost have to be disposable. But they’re still the most valuable offensive weapons on your team. So you have to pay them their relative value. Do you expose your most highly paid players to such punishment?
I don’t think RG3 lasts three seasons doing what he did this year. Either he sits in the pocket more, or his career will be wasted. Do you take mediocre QB talents like Chip Kelly does? Then you just run their legs off and throw them away after a couple shaves?
I think RG3 getting hurt had as much to do with Kelly staying at Nikegon as anything else. If you can’t get it done with RG3, who can you get it done with?
Kaepernick benefits from the structure of Harbaugh’s offense. He’s a pistol QB in a jumbo package. So running should be the mindset for the whole of Harbaugh’s offense. Think about how valuable the WR’s are in the read option. Now just take them out and put some big boys in to block and catch.
Harbaugh’s method might just work in the end. If everyone runs, then put a bunch of big nasties on the field and just bang it down the field. Shanahan got RG3 killed because he likes all that small O-line cut block crap like the read option coaches in the NCAA like. Harbaugh likes to put a hat on a hat then add a couple more hats and just get in a shoving match. I think that might be the better way to go.
Heh heh… I can see Harbaugh getting a couple 6’5″ 290# guys to wear numbers in the 80’s and lining them up as wide ends. There would be no need for experienced blockers with that size to hold like the WR’s in a read option do. Then he could just switch everything up and move the TE’s to the splits and vice versa
It would be ugly and exciting at the same time.
Kaepernick played in the pistol offense under Chris Ault at Nevada. Harbaugh was smart enough to realize this and evolve the offense to his strengths.
With Harbaugh’s jumbo package, not Shanahan’s light infantry cut blockers and scat ends.
Harbaugh ain’t stupid. He’s not going to expose his franchise to the realities of trying to be a RB in the NFL. His RB’s have enough of a problem doing that and staying off crutches. He’s going to tell him to be smart and follow those big big guys wearing numbers 50 through 79 (and some 80’s) down the field.
And now that DC’s in the NFL have tape on these guys we’ll see who comes out next year and succeeds. It always seems these mobile QB’s get one good or great year in the NFL then disappear. Vick is probably the last one to have any meaningful time in the league, and I would argue he’s not been that good for more than half his career anyway.
Free Eric Moreland!! Free Eric Moreland!! Eric Moreland is being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. Where the rest of us are free to; stay home, leave early, fast forward or totally ignore he, as part of his penance, is being forced to sit through two plus hours of essentially intramural basketball.
After the game he is, presumably, further punished by being forced to watch a filmed replay. I can only assume he is forbidden to use the plush new couches and enjoy the tasty post-game snacks in the new players lounge.
How much more could any young man endure before he is once again allowed to play. Wait a minute…..maybe he doesn’t really have it so bad. JB
I just get tired of CR continually playing pop psychologist, give it a number and follow through. If whatever shit Moreland did pisses you off for four games worth they go with it and simply say he’s suspended for four games. Stop drawing attention to yourself with the game to game decision.
Jaquizz had a good game today.
The Pistol isn’t for everyone. I have watched Kaepernick live for about ten games in college and if you think the Pistol is about running qbs, you are dead wrong. The point of all these option read systems is to make the defenses cover more territory and to create leverage by outmanning the other guys in certain spots on the field and placing defenders in untenable positions where the do not need to be blocked. Speeding up and slowing down tempo is as a big deal as mobility. Both of these things create late decision making on the part of the defense. The quarterback needs to be multidimensional. Look how Wilson was able to escape a certain sack as he drove Seattle to their last td. That is the esssence of where the game is headed. Every team will have three guys who can run or throw. One star guys like Colin Kaepernick will be the norm. But not all teams will chose to expose the qb in the same way.
Good to Bad on Kearsley. Still have an OV to change his mind.
It will be interesting to see if he still takes his OV to OSU on the 25th when he is set to announce the 23rd.
Is there a link for the Kearsley news? I haven’t seen anything so not sure what you’re talking about.

I knew it was too good to be true.
Cliff seems hopeful that MR will find a way to keep Bray, and also claims, “OSU’s new philosophy is get as much speed on the field as possible.”

Also, Wilner already projecting next FB seasons PAC12 div races. Seems a bit more positive on SC than I’d expected.

Odds are Riley will wait too long – time management isn’t his long suit.
USC fires O’Neill after win at Utah. http://www.foxsportswest.com/01/14/13/Kevin-ONeill-out-as-USC-coach/msn_landing.html?blockID=849257&feedID=3707
I’m not sure why they were wasting their time with him after the last couple seasons anyway.
Watching previous games it always seemed that the opposing team was running a layup drill and the Beavs missed every layup they attempted so since I didn’t watch the AZ game I went through the play-by-play stat sheet. The stat man counts a tip-in attempt as a layup attempt so it skews the stats somewhat but against AZ the Beavs had 14 made layups and 18 missed layups. The cats had 15 made layups but only 10 missed layups. When you can’t make 50% of your layups you’re not going to win many games.
Per twitterverse, both Moreland and Robbins will be available Saturday at USC
also per Mike Parker on the Joe Beaver show this afternoon.
Must have been an academic issue. Like skipping class or maybe not registered for enough credits.
Maybe an incomplete in a class?

Not sure if RB recruit Lawrence Mattison is a football player or comic book character. dude is getting ripped.

Assassin’s Creed meets Green Arrow. May as well have him model the new unis.
One of the biggest condemnations of Beaver basketball this season is that Orange Express site…….which always has something positive to say. But this season it hasnt been updated since early in the preconference schedule. Nothing at all positive to say, I guess. Gonna be a looooong, depressing season.
That is Jack’s blog.
I just threw in the towel when Angus went down. This team is just mediocre without perimeter shooting, and he’s our best shot from anywhere on the floor. A quick look at the roster shows me this:
Starks can make it from anywhere, but he needs help creating his shot if he’s the only shooter on the floor. To top it off, he’s a streak shooter.
Nelson can be streaky too. But he’s more consistent. Still, his release is sooooo sloooow. It works sometimes when he double pumps. But you can’t count on two or three shot fakes when the clock is running down on you. And wtf with the dribble entry leading to all these floating twisting kick-outs to the defense?
Collier can’t make a shot outside five feet, which is sad because he could be an NBA player if he could hit a turn-around J.
Moreland is pretty much the same as Collier, and I’d give Joe about three feet more than either in range.
Barton and Reid can slash and get to the rim or pass. But both are hesitant from outside the lane. And that makes their entry and finish that much harder.
Olaf has the green light, so he must be able to shoot it in practice. If he starts making his shots, we could be better than mediocre. But he still lacks strength enough to clear space for a shot in the lane on his own.
Robbins was supposed to be an offensive threat this year, but I haven’t seen any green lights in his hands. Besides, he and the other frosh are still just frosh. One awesome play can lead to one lousy play and back again.
LMW is who I want more of. He’s clearly strong on D. But he’s also had some of the prettiest shots all year. And he’s created them for himself… which is odd on a CR coached team… unless you’re a 6’7-8″ big with no handle running the offense from mid-court… apparently.
That mid-range baseline floater he made in the first half on Saturday was a big league shot. And if I remember correctly he also drove into the teeth of Purdue’s D and got himself stuck in the trees only to finally put up a quick half-hook from 10 feet out.
We just need shooters on the floor. Shooters make shots, and made shots are what make the scoreboard ding. We should know. Zona was making everything at certain points in the last game. And it wasn’t just one or two guys. It was everyone.
“Just a frosh” seems to pertain only to Oregon State. Other teams – Pac 12 or any conference – seem to have frosh who can light up the scoreboard.
They make their fair share of mistakes as well. And some are one-n-dunners who are just on their way to the NBA as well. But they also get extended playing time, which lessens their mistakes as the year grinds on.
Honestly, except for Olaf’s consistently poor shooting, I like this frosh class more than any we’ve had in a long long time. I don’t like the circumstances, but I also like that we’re seeing them get floor time. IMO, it wouldn’t be bagging the season if they played a more prominent role now. It would be a rough league stretch until they started hitting on most cylinders. But those four contributing is the only way we see any kind of a late season run.
Oh… and it would help if offensive tackles weren’t running the point.
Remmers!!
You should ask him his opinion on the “Obama effect” and the team.
He’ll just spaz out and call you a “nigger-hater” if you say “obama”.
If it has anything to do with hoops… sure. I may be tilting at windmills, but the windmill shouldn’t be mentioned here if you don’t want a lance run through it.
Inferring that someone doesn’t do their job, that they just have a crutch, is just silly nonsense? Inferring they wouldn’t even have their job but for the same reason is what?
Blah blah blah.
Calling someone a nigger hater for criticizing a basketball coach makes you a boner of epic proportions.
This crap needs to stop pronto.
I don’t want to get involved. You’re both grown men; resolve it on your own. And soon.
Damn….. I was just about to ask about the Obama effect……
…Inquiring minds need to know…
I’d suggest starting with the idiot who dropped “nigger hater”on your blog.
Just sayin.
I don’t want to police. Police yourselves, resolve it yourselves, keep the blog classy.
Either way, I don’t want to see that N word again. Makes me cringe; makes other people upset. This is the last time I’m saying it before I do step in.
Ban Him!
Since that didn’t happen, what do we make poor reading comprehension and bombastic conclusions?
I am more concerned about a man who need to use the N-word to get a point across. You are sad.
Yeah… that’s not self-righteous goo at all.
I am ashamed that we went to the same college. Are you sure you didn’t graduate from ‘Ol Miss in the 50s. The N-word has no place in casual conversation you dipshit. Is that how you talk at home, around the table with your family, I sure hope not. Just the presence of that word exudes arrogance and ingnorance. I am ashamed that you have an OSU diploma, asuming you graduated.
You are truly a Jack….Ass
Andif I’m going to parse words with someone I’m pretending actually graduated from college, then I’m going to point out that jack and ass are redundant.
Someone who was in the second grade and without a college degree who may have been named Jack may have heard an insult such as this before…
… you fucking dipshit coward.
You’ll get over it… because you’ll grow up one day.
I am fairly certain that you were drunk the other night when you went on that bizarre rant using the N-word. I think for that you need to apologize to the readers of this site. I am quite certain that if I were to meet you in person that you would never use that term in front of me as I am african american. The truth is that you are not as smart as you think you are, you are obnoxious and most people on this site think you are a fucking idiot. Now as for meeting you in public, feel free to name a place and I will be happy to let you say the N word in my presence and then I will promply beat a fucking apology out of you. Coward.
Ok liver,
I sincerely apologize. I’m not going to go into anything in-depth, and it would seem too outlandish anyway. There is/was no reason for me to put you through what I wrote, and I do apologize to you and to anyone who chose to read this.
I own what I wrote, and I say what I wrote is wrong.
Thank you.
Jack……ass
Still steaming in self-righteous goo?
You’ll get over it.
You are ingnorant and a gigantic TOOL.
You introduced the N word into a sports forum! I will NOT get over it. You bring shame to all of us who graduated from OSU. Angry should ban your ass.
Just talk to the teacher after recess is over.
OT: can’t seem to post in the forum..
It looks good on Arnold
?@CalRivals
JF: spoke to Crespi’s Brandon Arnold. Will most likely NOT be visiting Berkeley the weekend of 25th. To stick with Oregon State
LJ Moore – Per ESPN it’s down to OSU and OU. He’s still going to visit ASU this weekend and probably won’t announce till signing day.
this would be a true turning point if Riley and co can win this battle.
