Midweek games this week. Start time is 5:35 Pacific.
Really hate this series. SF is a decent team, and the Beavs are going to blow through some pitching playing these two games. Only one game off before facing Arizona. Don't like it. My guess is Starr and Bauer/Painton to get the starts, but right now it is TBD.
Hopefully they save the big guns for the weekend. I don’t mind losing 1 of these games at the expense if it means having a near full strength bullpen for UA. Hopefully the bats give them some cushion to work with.
Bullpen stats to date: 5-0, ERA 0.33, IP 55.1, H 24, ER 2, BB 12, SO 48
Amazing start.
I’ve heard Child for today.
Seems like Jim Wilson explained to Jay Reece that the AZ infield is hard as a parking lot and a pitcher like Childs who relies somewhat on ground outs would not be the best choice to pitch there. Thus the plan to pitch Childs today.
GO BEAVS!
Taking a loss to SF wouldn’t be all that bad, as it would take the winning streak pressure off.
Speak for yourself.
Beavs have a 13 game home win streak going back to 2012, currently 6th longest in the nation.
The good news is that Arizona is also playing two mid-week games (Butler) the ducks are also playing two against Texas State.
Saw the TS team getting on a bus over by Valley River a short time ago.
RPI is a wash for their games today and tomorrow?
Tyler Smith P12 Player of the week. Arizona game on Sunday will NOT be broadcast on the P12 network as originally scheduled (damn direct tv!)
Half price tickets today and tomorrow.
Way OT…
I personally like thin crust pies. But some of you may feel differently. It’s easy as pie to make your own pizza, and it comes out much better than delivery or in-store if you do it. Just google the kind of crust you like and make it.
The secret, as told to me by an old woman just recently, is to bake the crust first. Then you spread just a small can of tomato paste on top (half a can if you’re only making one). Then you sprinkle some pizza herb mix (google or bulk bins help) on top and add cheese. Add whatever toppings you like after that. Just make sure meats are cooked or cured before you add them.
Save yourself money and enjoy pizza for once in your life.
Make it yourself.
I agree…that your post was WAY OT…
Jack, you have to go home made pizza sauce.
Actually, I learned the paste and seasoning from an old pro only as a shortcut. She says the way they made it in her shop was to crush fresh tomatoes and garlic and add the seasoning to the saute to just cook it down for a bit. That’s all it takes for homemade sauce. So I’d have to agree. Too bad tomatoes are just starting now.
Beavers leading the nation in team ERA by half a run (I’m disqualifying Dartmouth since they have played only 3 games).

Child looks terrible so far.
Lack of homemade pizza is really costing him.
Ryan Barnes has to make that play
Think Child makes tt through another inning?
Probably. I think he’ll settle down, but if he struggles at all in the 2nd, he’ll get pulled
Comeon, Child…
Yank him.
Child has no command of any of his pitches. Painful to watch.
MR would give him 6 more innings to settle in.
Childs is getting pounded in the butthole. Wait, can I get in trouble for saying that? I take it back.
They go to get Child out of there or they’re gonna get blown out.
Guess Nate was following Angrybeavs
Why did they send him out for the third?
Child should get an atomic wedgie from his teammates.
I feel like I’m watching my Italian grandmother serving meatballs.
She has better command.
Bye bye, Child…
Child, PLEASE!
Is that a quote from Jerry Sandusky?
Yeah, not looking good tonight.
Pull that ump……please!
Team looks like they ate a huge turkey dinner about an hour ago. Breakout the Five Hour Energy.
Child could have pitched a no-hitter to this point and we still wouldn’t lead. Offense really needs to step it up.
Would be nice if the bats actually woke up now
Luck O the Beavs
Beavers hitters continue to sleep walk through the game. 3-0 USF after 5 innings
I know they are only down 3 but it feels like 10
Make it 2 on the home run by Dylan Davis
Solo homr run for Davis. 3-1 Dons
5-1 USF now. That’s probably the game. Pretty insurmountable deficit with how the offense has looked. Jake Rodriguez’s inability to block a swinging third strike costs the Beavers. Barnes dropped a potential double play ball that cost the Beavers a run in the first. Poor starting pitching, offense and defense really hurting the Beavers tonight
5-1 USF after 6-1/2. Not looking good
Jansen ph for JRod leads off the 7th with a walk, 5-1 SF, need to make up some of the difference NOW.
Jansen to 2nd as Casper K on full count. Good as a sac, but small ball not likely to make up the margin this late in the game, need hits and smart base running.
Shitty hitting by Casper and Hayes. Gotta put the ball in play.
Bavers at-bats have been extremely all night long. Every other deficit this season I felt OSU could come back from, not tonight. Team just looks flat. Got to bounce back tomorrow.
Extremely poor*
Wow, just tuned in. TWO hits that’s it?
two goddamn hits?
How can you not be a Keyes fan? Hasn’t played 2B at all this year, I believe, and makes a nice play to finish t8 and bring the Beavs up trailing 5-1.
And it looks like Casey made a wise decision not to pitch Child this weekend.
Tyler Smith gets hit in the hand. Hopefully he’ll be alright, can’t afford to lose him for any amount of time.
Conforto and Davis with b2b strike outs with Smith at first. 0-3 with 3 SO for Conforto. Just one of those days.
Barnes with a two out single but Clark grounds into a FC to end the inning. 5-1 Dons end of 8.
Tonight’s starter for USF came in with a 7.11 ERA and had made 3 starts already. Beavers managed 1 hit off him. Was evident early on that the team was extremely flat. Was bound to happen eventually, hopefully the loss gets them refocused heading into conference play.
I feel like they’re often flat in midweek games. I’d like to see their record in these games.
Beavs were 6-1 last year in mid-week games.
Yup, but sometimes you tend to remember the losses in those games where the team plays really poorly more than the wins.
Just when I was going to mention that it looks like Bryant may be returning to sophomore form he throws a 4 pitch two out walk and then gives up a single. Then goes 2-0 to the next batter before inducing the fly out to Conforto. I’m glad I missed most of this mess.
Beavers lose 5-1 and are now 15-1. Time to refocus and start a new winning streak tomorrow
I’m glad tickets were half price, that’s the only positive from tonight :(
OT – Andy Levitre gets 5 yr $39M deal with Titans. Apparently makes him the second highest paid guy on the team behind RB Chris Johnson.
Does that top Steven Jackson’s last deal? Is Levitre’s contract the biggest Beaver NFL contract to date?
I hope we use that as some kind of recruiting point with players. At least with potential O-Line recruits.
Nice job Levitre/Levitre’s agent.
Anyone have news on Tyler Smith’s hand?
So I don’t watch/listen to one game and they lose? What’s that all about?
Why is Casper playing? Is everyone else hurt? I guess he finally got his weekly hit.
This guy thinks Oregon State basketball will win the PAC 12 Championship next season:
http://www.csnnw.com/blog/crawfords-court/wednesday-afternoon-opponents-pac-12-tourney-could-be-championship-final-next
I actually thought Nelson was a Senior. Glad he will be back. The writer failed to mention another reason that gives me a lot of hope – Joe Burton won’t be on the team anymore. It sounds like Burton put up good numbers this season, but from watching him I feel like he is hurting the team in other ways that I can’t pinpoint. It’s probably just the ill advised hook shots and bad passes. Plus he is just slow and his head is always down.
Is anyone here a basketball expert (Jack) and willing to give an assessment of how things might turn out differently next season? I would assume Robinson will be given some very clear instructions this offeseason from BDC that he needs to get this thing turned around right away.
He’s wrong on Starks. Ahmad should move to the sixth man and plug in for a change of pace. Barton will be the PG next year, and he’s starting to show it. And Cooke will likely pick up back-up minutes (and do it well). LMW and Robbins will fill in as G/F combos and probably get a lot of looks when we need a three guard set or a swing with a big frontcourt.
Olaf is strictly a face-up swing right now. He has some bttb skills, but he’s just a SF in a big body. He surprised me late when he showed really quick lateral movement on perimeter D. The same can not be said of Moreland. Eric is a PF with some perimeter skills. But he needs to patrol the baseline and take his dribble-drives from the corner. Corners are also the most likely spots for a player like him to develop a perimeter shot. He needs to space himself into the corners (short and long), set screens down and back and be ready for anything headed for the rim. And Moreland will be a ton better on help D since we add three huge players to the roster next year. I expected Collier this year to do what I think Moreland should do next year. Collier desperately needs to knock down 10-15 foot jumpers, or he’s going to be beat on the head and shoulders with no respect from the refs again next year. He’s worked on that shot, but it’s only showing at the line. He needs to draw the D out. Reid needs to do the same. He can handle and slash better than Collier, but nobody respects that if you can’t shoot over them.
That leaves Angus, Gomis and N’diaye to play the C. We currently have nobody at the position. Zero C’s playing this year, three next year. That alone should be a glaring difference. I know Gomis and N’diaye are tilted to the D end. But they both can run and are really quick to the ball when it’s overhead. They work harder than their talent, so their talent will eventually catch up. And Angus won’t have to work as hard as he would have had to this season to get the same results with the two bigs behind him. That will probably help his rehab more than anything.
The final note will be our perimeter shooting. We will have Angus, Berto, Ahmad, Olaf, Barton, LMW, Robbins and Cooke. Any one of those players can let loose at any time with a pretty good chance it goes in. It took a while for this year’s frosh to get into that groove, but they’ll be there next year. But Cooke will not need any time to learn his shot in the college game. He will be the best pure shooter of any on our roster. So this year we have three frosh and a soph PG whose role was undefined until late, two juniors and one DNP. Olaf was obviously given the green light to take pressure off Ahmad and Berto. But it took him forever to warm up, so those two suffered all season long.
No bigs and two consistent shooters makes for one long season. I don’t know about winning the league next year. But I wouldn’t bet against them to start the season. I still would hesitate in any league where Monty is a coach and UCLA and Zona can pull in elite talent on a yearly basis.
It’s pretty much a NCAA or bust season next year, whether we win the Pac or not.
“It’s pretty much a NCAA or bust season EVERY year, whether we win the Pac or not.”
I fixed that last sentence for you.
I can only hope they lock themselves in the practice facility for the summer. When does it open, BTW? – the webcam is only on an exterior wall – hardly helpful for following progress.
This guys comments on Starks show that he actually hasn’t paid much attention to Beaver hoops this year and therefore has little credibillity. The Beavs need Barton to further his development to have a credible PG. Starks isn’t a PG and if he continues his second half play into the start of next year, he may not even be a factor at all. Any of a number of players could average 4 points a game with a better shot selection.
Maybe the bigs grow during the off season and come out strong, but to predict anything above .500 right now doesn’t make a lot of sense. Colorado on the other hand, will be loaded.
OT – 10 players to watch in the Pac-12 next season. OSU DE Scott Chricton makes the list:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/college-football/photos/1303/pac-12-players-to-watch-2013/9/
It’s pretty telling that nobody is in here commenting on the Pac 12 tourney game being played Vegas going on right now with Oregon State playing Colorado.
FWIW- team looks nervous and is down 9-4 early. Several unforced turnovers so far, including Olaf passing down low from the 3 point line and passing directly to a Colorado player. His aim is about as bad passing from out there as it is shooting.
On the plus side, Moreland looks like he’s ready to play some ball. Too bad a team can’t play 1 on 5 with much success in basketball.
do you have a link?
can’t find a link on firstrow. i’m watching on pac-12 network, so there has to be a pirated stream somewhere
A lot of us just can’t watch the game
Can’t watch the game here at work but the Beavs are getting killed on the boards. Colorado has already taken 10 more shots than OSU
Colorado with 8 offensive boards and the Beavs have 9 boards total.
Nelson just hit a spot up 3 from about where the coaches stand by the scorer’s table and Collier gets a dunk and suddenly it’s a tie game. Clean slate, let’s hope they can do something with it. 4:22 left in the half.
I’ve seen Colorado just ball the ball out of bounds twice now. It’s a battle to see which team wants this win the least! I still think OSU can win that battle.
*pass the ball*
half court shot at halftime buzzer good for CO. They’re up 32-26
Colorado had the ball because Barton couldn’t dribble the ball up the court and let it go out of bounds, leading to possession for CO with 1.1 seconds to go, and of course they hit the shot.
Beavs season in a nutshell.
By Barton you mean Berto? He’s the one who lost the handle on an easy ball.
Hahaha somebody picked the Beavs and Buffs to battle for the conference title next year, and he picks OSU! hilarious.
does it seem to anyone but me – that the Beavs can defend until the last few seconds and the other team seems to always make the shot.
If the shot clock were only 10 seconds, we’d be in major trouble.
Well, the Beavers have limited Colorado to 39% shooting, I’d say that’s pretty okay defense
It’s always a good sign when teammates shove each other while on the court. Reid takes exception to some advice/critique Moreland is giving him after Reid fouls a CO player. Reid shoves Moreland away. good stuff.
Moreland was telling Reid to cool it. Reid got smacked with an elbow in the face on the first rebound/loose ball then thought he caught a clean ball on the second. He was hot and giving the ref the business until Moreland stepped in. And he almost did it again when Eric left him alone again.
In fact, I thought for sure the refs were going to review the hit that upset Reid when they huddled right then.
Interesting interaction between Moreland and Reid after the foul… Moreland got in his face and read didn’t appreciate it.
Beavs shooting 25% in the 2nd half, but only trail by 4. 13:00 to go.
Roberto is having a rough game. Just 4 for 13 shooting and the Beavers really need him to step up down the stretch of this game if they want to win this.
Of course the guy who is 0-4 from 3 hits a 3 off the dribble as the shot clock winds down.
Well, that’s game. Season is over.
In order to win this game, the Beavers needed Joe Burton, Eric Moreland and Roberto Nelson to really step up in the 2nd half, just hasn’t happened.
Burton can’t leave soon enough. He plays no defense and doesn’t rebound.
I thought his turquoise shoes would tip the game in our favor. Those things are pure magic.
“Luck O’ The Beavs” is a stronger force than any weird colored sneakers.
Hey, cut Burton some slack, you try rebounding at 320 pounds….sorry but he hasn’t seen 295 in a long time.
Beavers lose 74-68 and their season is over. Oh well. On to next season.
Glass half full….at least the record was so bad this year that we won’t have to debate the merits of a CBI appearance. I half expected that with a couple of wins in the P-12 tourney that the Gazelle Group would come calling again.
“Couldn’t be simpler”
Beavers are down 1-0 yet again in the top of the first. Batter should have struck out looking, pitch right down the middle called a ball.
On the radio last night there were a couple of calls that the broadcaster sounded absolutely incredulous about. I’ve heard some “well that didn’t look like a strike” type of chatter before and I know there should be some homerism but is the umping really as bad tonight as he made it sound last night?
Home plate ump last night was too bad, tonight the home plate has already been worse in just an inning. About 3 different pitches with Starr on the mound that clearly looked like strikes, but were called balls.
Esposito passed ball and it’s 2-0. Beavers off to a terrible start
2-0 USF after a 1/2 inning. OSU is lucky it wasn’t worse.
Starr doesn’t fool anyone. It’s great that he has battled back from injuries but he just doesn’t have the stuff to be a part of this rotation.
He’s the #5 guy, he’s not gonna get many starts
Someone has posted “NO MORE YEARS! NO MORE YEARS!” on pureorange. :-)
Here’s hoping they were referring to bobby and cr.
If I had to chose bobby would be the first out the door.
Very good 2nd inning from Starr. Executed his pitches much better and most importantly great location on them.
His location was really good that last half.
7 in a row retired by Taylor Starr. 2-1 USF going to the bottom of the third
Bases are loaded with 1 out for Dylan Davis
Two run single by Dylan Davis and he advances to 2nd on throw to third. Runners on second and third with 1 out for Danny Hayes. 3-2 Beavers
Big chance for the freshman Clark, sacks juiced one out
Beavers blow an opportunity to extend the lead and it’s 3-2 Beavers after 3 innings
Frustrating that Clark and Keyes can’t get the job done once again.
Comes back to hurt the Beavers, too with USF tying the game
How big is it that Smith isn’t in the lineup? Would Jake be behind the plate and that might have prevented a couple of runs.
USF turns a one out infield single into a run due to poor play by Esposito behind the plate.
Off to another season of baserunning errors. I guess we shouldn’t have blamed it all on Lees
USF is playing good defense and running the bases well and the Beavers aren’t.
Brandon Jackson coming with 1 out in the 5th. Starr was pretty solid after the first inning, defense didn’t help him out.
Esposito with a tough night. 3 stolen bases and a passed ball scoring a run.
Luck of the ducks, they have runners at the corners with one out and a WP, balk, WP scores the two runners while the two batters strike out. TXST leads 3-2 after 3.
Sac fly by Danny Hayes and they lead 4-3
Come on Clark
Damn. He’s goingto continue to get opportunities with runners on
Gabe Clark again doesn’t get the job done.
For some reason the 6th is the Beaver inning. Keyes makes it so tonight.
Nevermind…. it’s only the 5th. 6-3 Beavs
With the way Keyes and the runners acted, sure seems like the Beavers just got a major break on the two run double by Kavin Keyes and the Beavers are leading 6-3
Luck o the Beavs, two positive foul line plays on the left side. No doubt about the roller, Keyes hit….hmm. Jay Reece didn’t mention how long Keyes hesitated before leaving the plate. I’ll take it though.
Brandon Jackson is one of OSU’s best relievers. Him and Engelbrekt are probably the top 2 relievers. They just know how to get guys out.
Conforto time!
The Beavers have played some really bad defense tonight. Cost them two more runs. 6-5 Beavers after 6 1/2 innings
Bad time to have a lapse in concentration. Plays like that will happen every so often but it really hurts that it happened with two outs and two on.
Conforto made it look easy, got the ball out of the glove and had momentum to make the throw to the plate to get the runner by a full step. On to the b7.
Cou8ld we be looking at the coming series with Arizona? Doesnt seem like the team that hadnt lost.
SF isn’t bad, so there’s that.
Beavs coming back to earth. Things revert to the mean.
And another defensive mistake puts runners on first and second and 1 out for USF
The plot sickens
Did CR put a hex on the baseball team?
Beavers escape with a 6-5 win. Much better production from the offense tonight, but the need more focus defensively this weekend against Arizona. Can’t beat yourself. Beavers are now 16-1
Did it look like Max touched the ball on final DP? 1-4-6-3?
Anyway, good for Peterson to get the bad taste out and good to see Tyler able to take the field.
Looked like he just barely got a piece of it, probably is a DP regardless
Agree, just may have made it a bit more difficult for Peterson.
Meanwhile, Arizona cruises to b2b 14-2 wins against Butler.
Sounds like Brad Stevens needs to coach the Butler baseball team also.
just back from the game and the beavs should have gotten swept. Beavs were gifted 2 runs on an obvious foul fall ruled fair over 3rd base. Be interesting to see if the USF coach files a formal protest.
And Kavin Keyes would have had another chance to drive the runners in. USF got two runs on a dropped fly ball to center. Both teams got some breaks to score. It happens.
One was on a mistake by the Beavs (dropped fly ball). The other by an umpire (not a mistake by the Beavs or USF). Completely different stories there. One was a mistake you have control over. The other was not. Yes Keyes would have gotten another swing if it would have been properly ruled a foul ball. He also could have grounded out to end the inning. Either way it was a gift by the umpire.
I think the plate ump in the first game was calling a funny game and maybe unsettled the Beaver hitters. Thats part of the game.
In any case, its lucky for one side or the other when you make a bonehead play, whether the ump or a player does it.
And since the ump called it a fair ball, ….it was, a fair ball. You can moan all you want if you are the coach on the bad side of the call, but making calls is part of the game.
that was not my point. Why is this concept so difficult for some of you to understand that you make counterpoints that are comparing apples to oranges? My point was the beavs made a mistake that was within their control (dropped routine fly ball). USF did not. They got a screwgie on something totally out of their control. Had the shoe been on the other foot every beaver fan on the face of the earth would have been bitching that we got screwed and should have won. We were gifted 2 runs by the umpire. OSU gifted USF 2 runs on a mental error. I am more concerned about that since without that drop this game would not have been so close. Without that gift from the umpire USF could have easily and probably should have won this game. And for the record I don’t give a shit what the umpire called. It was a foul ball by at least 2 feet. I was sitting in section 4 (1st base side) almost even with the 3rd base line. Everyone around us saw and said the same thing. It was clearly a foul ball.
Good for you…..what goes around comes around….the Beavs have it coming to them if karma has its way! It’ll pop its head during the Civil War football game, so it won’t affect the baseball season.
WSN, I too was at the game, third base side. Yes that ball probably was foul. Yes you are correct the dropped fly ball by Davis was in the control of the beavers. I think rSteve is right, it goes with what the ump calls (even if it’s wrong) and what you do in those situations. If we’re to be honest about umpires screw ups, then Ryan Barnes should have been safe at first during the run down when he dislodged the ball from the USF player getting back to the bag. From our view he was clearly safe and the ball dropped on contact, and Barnes was not out of the base path and was safe. But the ump called him out. Who knows what would have happened there Barnes was aboard with no outs. I agree with rSteve, umpire decisions are part of the game, good and bad. AND I agree with you that the mental error of dropping a routine fly ball is an issue. All game fans in our section were commenting on fielders catching balls with one hand not two. Last I checked they still taught little league kids to use two hands, for just the reason you saw last night.
3G, I wasn’t in your section (or even at Goss) but sure did notice the one-handed catch thing. Surprised to see that at this level, maybe it isn’t unusual but this was the first time it stood out to me.
Barnes was called out by the umpire during the run down because he intentionally knocked the ball out of the USF players glove. That was the way I saw it as well.
